I have flat feet and wide feet, and need a wide toe box…I also land flat…my right ankle was broken 2 years ago, and I have started to walk 5 miles a day on the road up and down hills. I get a lot of shin pain. Please recommend a good stability shoe. Thank you.

I agree. I purchased a pair of Brooks GTS 17 a few years ago and my knees, ankles, and feet have been really bothering me for over a year and a half. Had my right knee drained a year ago. Right ankle swollen and so sore that I had to use crutches to make it to the restroom. Eating aspirin and Ibuprofen like candy. Rubbed DMSO on my ankle and knee. Compression brace on my knee and ankle.
After watching this video I was convinced. Stability shoes were causing me severe pain. They restrict your natural motion. I ordered a pair of Saucony ride 10 running shoes and received them yesterday afternoon. They feel great! I changed NOTHING except the shoes that I was wearing and you would not believe the immediate improvement. I can stand and walk without pain.

I had a running store incorrectly tell me I was overpronating and recommended stability shoes. I started having pains and couldn’t figure out why until I finally looked at my wear pattern. Found out I was slightly underpronating. Bought some netural shoes with a bit of extra cushioning and my legs have been much happier.

I have got gT 2000 post a run assessment a few years ago but looking to switch I got flat feet and over probate getting some knee pain and keen to get something that reduces impact on joints ideally a nice light shoes would be goodany ideas to balance weight with support thx

Hi Jamie, got to see this video lately, excellent point made.. one the heel to toe drop is worked on and you tend to strike mid or forefoot stability doesn’t matter much. Kinvaras, freedom and liberty are excellent examples of how this has really covered the gap closer..

Great review on the shoes. I have been replacing the Kayano shoes at about 400 miles as I start to feel some soreness in my knees. I am wondering now if I am replacing them to early after watching this.
I rotate through the Brooks Adrenaline 20’s, ASICS Kayano 26, and On Cloudflyer.
The Kayono seems to be the best for avoiding injury but they do feel firm when you land compared to the other too. If I was racing a 5-10k I would use the On’s, but if I was half marathon training I would choose the Asics. Love the Brooks but they do keep on niggling my right ankle grrr.

I was running on New balance 1080, a neutral shoe. I had some issues with blisters on my inner foot. I went into a shop that convinced me that I needed stability shoes to fix the problem. so got the Asics gt-4000s now. Just did 2 short runs in them and I already feel pain in my shin. I wonder whether the pronation I had in my old shoes was actually helpful in absorbing some of the shocks. It’s weird that I have more pain after a 4k run with the proper shoes then I had before after a 15k run. Maybe I just have to get used to the new shoes. It definitely doesn’t seem like a lot of science went into this, maybe it’s mostly a matter of selling fancy shoes

I’ve ran in both the transcend and the adrenaline 19 (the one with the new guide rail). I got the 19’s way before they were released because I work at brooks. I’m here to tell you that the guide rails don’t work! At least for me. I pronate moderately and I started to develop plantar fasciitis by running in both the transcend and the adrenaline 19. I had cycled the two shoes for two months and started getting pains. Had to go back to my good old 361’s which has a medial post and dual density foam. The moment I put my foot back in my old shoes, my pain went away in an instant.
After running with lots of different neutral shoes I started to gravitate to stability shoes. I love the zoom structure 19 because before I ran with it, I literally had to think about how my foot would hit the ground on every stride like I was running on stilts and I was extremely injury prone.
One great thing about it is that the material supposed to control your pronation feels really responsive, so it actually feels like the extra pressure from your inward rolling is giving you propulsion when running. I felt like it was rewarding me for pronating, not exactly limiting my movements.
I feel like the structure 20+ models messed with the formula and I don’t like them as much though. I also run in vomeros and it has just enough stability for me. I wouldn’t mind if the new standard for stability shoes were just vomeros with a little bit more pronation control.

I have been running for over 30 years. And I over pronate. At one time, stability shoes were needed. Midsole foams would breakdown quickly, and your feet would sink into the shoe, throwing your gait out of line and increasing the risk of injury. I find today’s neutral shoes have all the support I need. I have run in recent versions of the Pegasus, Kinvara, adidas SN Glide, and Saucony Ride without issue. And I find today’s stability shoes like the Asics GT 2000 and Brooks Adrenaline to be too stiff and rigid. I think you are right, stability shoes will soon go the way of the dinosaur as soon as runners realize they can run more comfortably and injury free in neutral cushioned shoes.

Yep this man is 100% correct iv recently got the Brooks adrenaline GTS 19 over 3 weeks ago done 40K wit them and have nothing but knee pains shin pains you name it didnt feel right at all! Went for a run wit my old asics gel pulse 8 and would you believe it pain free.. don’t get me wrong there are a comfortable shoe the brooks But they are not for everyone. great review on stability shoes! last year had a right medial partial knee replacement and left knee has some wear and also have a hammer toe on my left foot; many years of outside running got the best of me. When i take my workouts outdoors, i do 45mins to hour power walk with light running as intervals, could you recommend the best possible shoe for me? i do pronate and want to protect what’s left of my knees and provide support to my front feet(hammer toe)…..thank you in advance and keep up the great detailed reviews. i’ve already forwarded this review to friends that will also help them!

Fully agree. Once I did a quite expensive high tech running analysis at a local store and based on the results, they suggest a shoe, which give extra stability at the outer side. After 2 runs (10km each) I faced very bad pain inside my knee. In the end I had an inflammation of the
patellar tendon, and it took me over 6 Month to fully recover… NEVER EVER AGAIN! Now I stick Gel Nimbus for years and everything is fine.

I bought nike infinity reacts after watching a range of videos. You guys were spot on they weren’t supportive enough (I ran previously in zoom structures). You were one of the few channels to say it and not be taken in by the hype!
I recently bought Asics GT-1000 and they hurt my right arch. I didn’t get that from my Nike Structures before. Any advice?
I “overpronated” a bit according to my physical therapist (nothing insane but was visible with the eye). I had some minor backpain and they couldnt find the cause of it. And he recommended insoles because that might fix my whole muscle chain up to my back.
To be clear i had no major pain or injuries, just wanted to prevent injuries in the future because i was about to increase my training intensity.
3 months later nothing is fixed, insoles do not feel super comfortable and think they caused tight shins.
I have run over 600 miles on my Adrenaline GTS 19. It was the shoe that helped me avoid a ton of injuries (i used to wear neutral shoes not understanding as a beginner)
I might swing towards the GTS 20 knowing it is likely the safest route for me, but I am open to suggestions

I started running 3 years ago and without realising, I bought a stability shoe. I had knee pain the first 6-8 month of running which I thought was to being a new runner but as soon as I bought some new neutral shoes the pain went. I haven’t had that same issue since.
Well, I just found a great new channel to follow. My question is how firm are the Asics 1000-9’s? The 7-8’s were a surprisingly soft(maybe too soft) light stability shoe, but I heard from someone that the new 9’s were a lot firmer.

I felt hurricane series was very soft and omni iso was quite firm. I tempt to try hoka arahi or NB 860v10. Can you recommend which one is better? I’d rather choose shoes with softer cushion. Well done guys! Amazing video. Only wished there was something as informative as this 10-15 years ago. It was not easy to find information about shoe options and pronation back then. I am a severe overpronator. I can only walk and run in stability shoes or I get very bad ankle and knee joint aches. I have had many of the iterations of Nike Zoom Air Structure Triax, Brooks Beast, GTS Adrenaline and Addiction, Asics Gel Foundation and NB 860. You rock guys! good find of this video. Been using stability shoes for years now as per my foot analysis since I joined marathon. I’d say Hoka Arahi by far is the greatest stability shoes I’ve ever used. Tried Asics GT 1000, Saucony Guide 10 but none of them beats Hoka.

I’ve just recently found your reviews, and I’m addicted. I’m aspiring to be an elite jogger at the very least, but I’ve just found out I have a navicular drop that is affecting everything up to my hips. This is a tough pill for me to swallow because there are so many shoes I want to buy! If I am to avoid a stability shoe, then what would you recommend for someone with “fallen arches” who wants to run? Any shoe and/or insert recommendations? Should I just stick to a neutral and slip in a decent arch support?

I’ve got the GTS 19 and 20 as well as the Arahi 4s in rotation. I’m wearing the Brooks in 48.5 and the HOKA in 48 and those have given me blisters on the inner heel as well. They also don’t seem to lock as well to the heel even though I’ve tied them with a runner’s knot. A do enjoy me some Saucony Liberty ISO 2 (49). They are super comfortable but feel a bit more responsive and less cushiony.

I work in sport retail store. You have brands that do stability shoes, and you have brands like salomon who don’t believe in overpronation at all. The turth is somewhere in the middle, if you are not seriously overpronating, you probably don’t need stability shoes. But those who do, will gladly buy stability shoe because it will help them.

Great review! I have tried Saucony omni 15, asics gt 4000, hoka one one gaviota 2 and still disappointed. I am completely flat footed and need a shoe with lots of support and a large toe box with wide shoe overall. What would you recommend? Will Arahi 4 be better than gaviota 2? From all the shoes I mentioned, the Saucony omni’s are the ones I most like due to how they fit but still my ankles hurt the next day. I am not a runner, I use them everyday. Any thoughts or shoe suggestions. I would greatly appreciate your opinion. Thanks
The biggest problem is we were never ment to wear shoes and that’s why you run into the problems people have today.
Amen. I’ve had a number of “specialists” ranging from foot doctors to running stores that see my form and are like, “Omg, you need a stability shoe!” When stepping up to tackling full marathons, I took every precaution because of all the added miles (and because I’ve had some overtraining injuries), and my consulting of these “specialists” actually kept me in an injury loop. It took several years of running and several injuries including three stress fractures (most people would have just quit and said they weren’t built for running by this time) before I just decided, “To heck with all these people and advice” and just went with what felt natural to me. I’ve made it a few years now injury free since running in natural/neutral shoes, and for this past year I’ve been in the Zoom Flys which provide basically zero support/stability which means I can transition my ankles totally free and natural. Wow it feels good, not to mention I have had no worries about injuries since running in neutral shoes. Stability shoes have really messed me up in the past. Of course everyone is different, but I’d warn people to never go to a shoe that fights your own natural body mechanics unless it is a very very last resort.
So weird. I avoided stability shoes until I got my hands on the Ultraboost ST and I love them. Before that I’d run in the brooks DYAD. I think you may be on to something here though. As much as I love to Ultraboost ST, haven’t been able to see improvement in my running with them as much as I did in the brooks DYAD. I’ve been getting very minor illiotibial irritation after a few miles.I think I’ll alternate between a non stability model just to see if theres a difference.

About 10 years ago some employee at a Nike Run store told me I overpronated and needed stability shoes. Ever since it’s felt like a death sentence bc I always find stability shoes to be the most boring looking. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t want to try the Epic React bc it’s not a stability shoe. I’m about to just say forget all that and wear whatever looks good and feels good though.

Very good video! As a new runner who over-pronates most shops will steer you towards stability shoes. They tend to be stiff, heavy and cause you to modify your gait instead of enhance running experience. However, shoes with some responsive cushioning offer more comfort and shock absorption where needed. Instead of making your shoes, and really, your feet take the blame people should research why injuries that are attributed to over-pronation happen in the first place. Many new runners expose weakness in hips and posterior chain that travel through the hips down through the knees, ankles and finally the feet. Most of the time, the injury is not the fault of your feetor your shoes.
Use strength training to fix hip and glute weaknesses and over-pronation is less likely to contribute to the most common injuries that many runners experience.
Damn you guys are by far top guys in comparing the shoes and actually talking about the technology in the shoe.

I have hypermobility in my ankles and I over-pronate so I have been running in the Asics Kayano range I found them very comfortable I have tried the under armour Hover infinite and ran a marathon in them no problems. I use Saucony for my trail runners. I was thinking of going with Brooks adrenaline GTS 20 but I am thinking they won’t have the support I need

I ran with nike free before, went to a running shoe store and they said nike zoom fly 3 and asics gt 2000 8 were best for me, got the asics but didn’t know they were stability shoes the guy didn’t tell me. Is it bad? I don’t think i overpronate at all
Hi! I’m trying to find the perfect trainer as getting back into running after suffering from knee pain for years. I have completely flat feet, slightly overpronate and get knee and hip flexor pain. Considering either saucony guide 13 or asics kayano-26, what would be your opinion? I like a shoe with a fair amount of cushioning to absorb impact.
Is there one you’d recommend over the other for plantar fasciitis or flat feet in general?
I really like the Hoka, but the range I could reach was disappointing, 690km, sole as completely damaged and a big hole on the side, after 500km stability was not as effective. Durability it is not their forte. I would buy again but only if I get a deal under $100.
Can you talk about running barefoot, how it strengthens your form for you to not heel strike, and review a pair of Vibrams while you’re at it?
Which stability shoe would you recommend as most suitable for Tempo and faster sessions?
I can’t run but walk. I’m 5’10” 165lbs. Heel spurs and my right one has flared up so bad I have wicked plantars facitis. I have Ehler Danlos Hypermobile, so my joints are mostly double jointed and getting painful. I need to walkand it starts with a better shoe than a 50$ nike. I’m leaning towards Hoka. Love your videos lads. Would appreciate your opinion and help. I’m a retired rugby player deciding to train up for a half marathon. I strike mid-forefoot. I have quite stiff ankles but i have ruptured my plantar fascia tendon off my heel about 2 years ago on my right foot. I’m looking for something soft, but responsive at the same time, but not too flexible? That will support a mid-forefoot striker. I feel like a stiffer trainer helps offload my weaker right foot. So have been looking at a shoe with more of a rocker and a lower drop. Find higher drops uncomfortable. My thoughts were looking at the NB 1080v10, hurricane 22, or one of the hoka range? Thanks for the review Chris. I’ve just bought a couple of new pairs of stability shoes, but nothing from 2020. I’ve bought a “budget” pair of Asics as I really like the way Asics shoes performs in general. I’ve also bought the Mizuno Wave Horizon 3. Never tried Mizuno before, and finding them really comfy on the longer runs.
I totally get stability shoes are not for everyone but I have medically diagnosed severe overprinting and because of those changes in shoe industry that you described it is far harder for me to find the shoes I can use. All the models I used to use are discontinued and those which exist are not giving me enough correction and running hurts. Very sad how stupidity of the masses affects those who actually does need the stability shoes.
I’ve been running in stability shoes for years. I’ve run in Asics, Brooks, Hoka, NB, but my favorite was always the Saucony Guide 8s with the powergrid material cause they were more responsive, stability worked well for my feet, and the ride underfoot just worked for me. I hate shoes that are overly plush cushioned and don’t bounce back or have low drops or aren’t as stable. Which stability shoes would work best?
i bought my first running shoe as i became to get serious, it was the kayano 25 wide version. I really love it because i have a lower arch and it feels perfect. im thinking of getting another pair of shoe(i have a wide foot and lower arch). im thinking of ds trainer 24 and going half a size up because this shoe does not have wide fit. i havw tried it on its just slightly tight at the front. when i up half a size the toe box feels ok but the heel is slipping by just a little. should i get it or get other shoe instead

Where would you guys put the new balance Vongo v4 in comparison to these options? Do you think it’s a good shoe for mid-forefoot strikers?
I currently have the ghost 9s and adrenaline 18s. I can run as long and fast as I want on a treadmill with the ghosts, but take it to the road in 5+ mile run and I get knee, ankle, and arch pain. I have very flat feet and pronate severely. I feel slower in the adrenaline’s, but during long road runs I have no pain. I might need support on uneven surfaces or maybe I just need to build up my foot muscles over time.
Brookes altering the adrenaline model really sucks for those of us without a left collateral ligament due to severe injury. However as you suggest maybe there is a way to compensate without the use of orthotics or stability shoes. That could save thousands of dollars over a lifetime.
My junior year of indoor track got all screwed up because the running shoe store recommended stability shoes three times in a row. I got injured in all three of them. I looked back and realized that in my first two years of running I wore neutral shoes and for some reason they had me wear stability. So I switched and got the Ghost 10 and haven’t been injured since, in three different pairs of neutral shoes.

Im looking for a soft support shoe and based on your reviews have tried the hurricanes but they were to narrow for me and unfortunately they dont do a wide in the uk. Have also tried the adrenaline 20s but didnt find them soft enough or the regular width wide enough. I Have seen the transcend 7s and apparently they are slightly wider than adrenalines and also softer. Could you tell me how you would compare the 3 please?

I’m a runner who’s a little on the heavy side and for me the Hoka Gaviota 2 is the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn. I ran 3 half marathons in them and countless training. In addition, I used them as an everyday shoe for over a year. They are a great stable shoe for someone on the heavier side. I just bought by 2nd pair yesterday and so excited.
HI I have a pair of gt 2000 that are in need of replacementso was thinking of mixing things up. I’m quite flat footed with weak ankles, but want something that is going to absorb impact when I run but not too heavyshould I stick with gt 2000 or perhaps try the saucony, mizen or hoka range

Great review Chris, I over pronate too (slightly) and recently got a pair of neutral Reebok Floatride energy 2.0’s for £29 and I’m now using them with a pair of Enertor arch support insoles, so far so good but would love a pair of the GTS 20’s just to try them out, are the Brooks true to size? I have an old old pair of asics and was just going to go back to asics until someone recommended another brand and I stumbled upon your videos. I have very unstable knees (been delaying a reconstruction for a decade) my ankles are definitely feeling the running I’m currently doing, although no injury. I dont know if my foot rolls and I have a medium arch. I just want to find something that will offer some cushioning and roll protection. Ideally buy online with inability to go to stores in iso. Am I mad?
I had Adrenaline GTS 19s and loved them then once they were done I switched to the Ravenna 10s as they also have guide rails too but not a fan of them so far! l’ll probably go back to Adrenaline GTS with the 20s after watching this. Thanks!
I always thought the ST for Ultraboost stands for Shoe Tounge cuz other ultraboosts always have that one piece upper. But stability makes sense for that big plastic over the boost.
Hi Chris just splashed out on the Adrenaline GTS 20 as an upgrade from the 19s. Loved my 19s and see them as more of a long distance shoe. But absolutely love my 20s as so comfortable, lighter and seem faster. Also now realise it’s good to mix them up. Always wanted a pair of Hoka but weren’t sure what stability ones would suit me best? Also wary of ordering on line as dont need the hassle of returning them, so wouldn’t know if I would need to go up a 1/2 size.

Hi, so I do short runs from 30 min/1 hour. I have very flat fit and sometimes suffer from plantar fasciitis. My go to running shoes for the past year has been the ascis gel kayano 25. They are really cushiony and seem to help provide a lot of support, but I hate how heavy they are. I’m thinking of switching to the Hoka one arahi 4. Do you think the hokas would be a similar shoe to switch over from the kayano’s?

As I can’t go and get fitted at the moment I am looking at trying to buy a new pair of running shoes online. My current shoes are a very old pair of Saucony Progrid Omni 8 which I bought after a fitting and are definitely past their best! I sprained my left ankle recently and now have a flat arch and weak ankle on that side, but other than that no change from when I got the Omni 8 years ago. I have been looking at Brooks GTS 20 as a replacement, but am also considering Saucony as I was happy with my previous pair. What would be your recommendation? I’d like good soft cushioning and my shoes seem to mainly wear out on the outside of my heal if that helps.

Thank you for a comparison of support running shoes. As a mid-pack sub-4 marathoner who mildly over-pronates I’m always on the look out for reviews and comparisons of support shoes but they seem surprisingly rare in comparison to reviews of neutral shoes so please do post more videos like this and cover other models and makes too!
My preference is still for a shoe with a medial post and torsional stability (like T-Beam from NB) but I’m aware these are going out of fashion somewhat with the rise of guide rails etc. which don’t seem to suit me as well.
My rotation currently includes three support shoes NB 860 v9 (long runs), NB 1500 v5 (speed work), Saucony Omni Iso 2 (easy runs) all of which seem to suit me well.
I previously got on well with the ASICS DS Trainer for speed work, the old Adidas Supernova Control for distance and the old Brooks Ravenna when it had a medial post.
So would be interested in your thoughts on those (and other similar) brands and models too!

Thanks for the review!! I used to run with kayano but at the end of long runs they felt heavy and bulky. I asked and people told me that they were meant for heavier women. I´m 120 pound and 5.2feet. Right now I´m running with Adrenaline GTS20 and they feel good but dont know if I feel as stable as with Kayano. Does the weight matter when buying stability shoes? Thx!

My wife got blisters from the Hoka Arahi 4 as well. She loves the Mizuno Wave Inspire 16. Have you tried those and how would they compare to the Adrenaline?
You miss the another important issue. Drop… Only 0 drop shoe is a healthy shoe, especially for non competitive use. Enough said.

Hiya! Great review. After watching this video and your review of the Brooks adrenaline itself, you’re pushing me to purchase them…I’m currently looking to replace my ASICS Dynamis shoes, which have now done well over 750km so need replacing.
I’ve always had asics, so can you really recommend the brooks?..I don’t think I over pronate much, but don’t tend to heel strike. I’ve been told by a sports Therapist that I have flat feet and should look for a stability shoe.
Finally, I do about 4 long runs a week ranging from 10-13km’s. And a short 5 or 6km run on the weekend….would you say the brooks will cope with that sort of mileage!

HI buddy and thanks for this review. I bought the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20 and it feels really comfortable and light after my 10 k.. I must say the upper side of the shoe sounds very fragile though. I will surely get the Asics 27 as a 2nd pair since the stability is more pronounced…Until now I could not decide really since I run with mid foot landing…But it would be very interesting to test the new Asics. Thanks for sharing, great info. I’m a big fan of the Kayanos and have stuck with them for years. Though I wear them out a tad faster, I assume as I am a heavier runner. After around 500km the tread under the ball of my foot is all gone. Looking forward to the release of the 27s but also tempted to give Brooks a go!
i share his opinions…i had multiplrle foot scans and all showed am having pronation… thought of correcting it by changing my running shoes to stability ones…i jumped from Saucony Triumph, Nike Span and finally Hoka’s Clifford & Arahi… the Hoka’s hurt me the most, i developed pain in my tibia and had shin splints notably on the Arahi…the injury hit me bad 4 weeks before my 70.3 Ironman and had to literally walk off my run…then i switched back to neutral shoes in a big way, on Pegasus Turbo 35’s…i did a total of 400km training run on it for my full marathon pain free!.. if you have pronation only, go for neutral shoes!
I use my shoes for walking. I have flat wide feet and severely to moderately overpronate. I have been wearing Brooks Addiction line for awhile. I would like a recommendation that fits my foot type and has a bit more cushion (softer feel). Thank you
When are the big manufacturers going to start making foot shaped shoes? Keep wearing all these brands with a 10mm drop and a pointy tight toe box and you’ll eventually need stability shoes from having weak feet.
I just got into running. When I went to my local store they measured me and recorded my run and told me my ankle pronated when I ran.
I got the Brooks Adrenaline 20 and even walking in these is game changing.
