The most common sense in any digestive issues of absorbing proteins and other nutrients dense is due to low stomach acid problem number one.
Dr Berg, can I only drink water on my fasted period(all morning)? In order to avoid night urges to pee, and avoid bloating?

This makes so much sense! I’ve been vegan for almost 4 years (and could never go back) but last year I lost a decent amount of weight by my caloric deficit and time in the gym. I wasn’t paying attention to macros as much as I was overall calories and I felt as though I was getting “skinny fat” as you said. It was the perfect way to put it for how I was feeling. People said I looked great but I felt “jiggly” almost. Since last year I maintained 15 out of the 30lbs lost and then was able to lose the next 10 again. This time I focused on macros so much more. I dove into the “vegan proteins” which had previously scared me because I always wanted to eat more in the past, rather than less. So before I would opt for huge bowls of veggies, and now I was eating smaller amounts of food, but the same amount of calories. This initially messed with my head. Because tofu, tempeh, and seitan are OF COURSE more calorically dense than broccoli. But this time the weight loss has helped me maintain muscle even in a deficit I am continuing to build strength. I feel amazing by simply tweaking my macros. I never thought it was difficult before to get protein, I knew how to do it, I just didn’t want to. I wanted to be able to eat more volume for the same amount of calories. Now that I’ve learned the importance based on how my body reacts and was able to go through recomp, I swear by greater amounts of protein than I did before. Personally, as a vegan I don’t struggle to get protein but I struggled to understand it’s importance before! Thank you for not just bashing the vegan lifestyle, I think it can be considered socially acceptable for nutritionists to just knock the vegan lifestyle, rather than create plans that cater to vegans! This is SO me at the moment so obvious and over a short time (3 months) nails deteriorated, skin flakey, tired, swollen ankles, memory in the toilet, attitude following. Ladies who are going through menopause and know it will possibly equate these changes to the expected ones associated with the hormonal changes. I donate plasma regularly but I was recently told that my protein levels in my blood was too low to donate at the moment..they told me to eat more protein and I laughed at them because I already eat tons of protein daily…prob over 200g per day which is about 1g per 1lb of my body weight….so, I don’t get it…research says it could be malabsorption issue, liver or kidney issue, or bowel issue….I’ve had fatty liver before so I’m thinking it’s related to that…I’m gonna keep resting the blood but it’s def a little odd to me

What a bunch of bullshit! Vegans are not deficient in protein. People can only get protein deficient if they are not eating enough calories (severe restriction). Because protein is such an important macronutrient, it is present in all foods, ALL foods! Again, unless you are dieting, or eating only processed food and not a whole food diet, you will experience problems. But eating enough calories from whole food diet, not junk, for your body weight and activity level you will not be deficient in protein. That joint pain she is talking about can be a symptom of many problems, including severe inflammation from eating too much meat and protein powders. Eat more greens, fruit and veggies and you’ll feel so much better, your aches and pains will diminish or will go away when you flood your body with real food not dead flesh or some supplements that cause cancer, by the way. Dead food for the alive body….will cause a slow and painful decline of health beginning with things such joint pain and muscle loss.

I have been following a ketogenic protocol for over a month now and feeling pretty good. However, based on all the macro calculations I`ve done my minimum protein intake falls between (0.36)x lbbw= 89 grams or 0.69x lb of lean mass=94 grams. Unfortunately, whenever I am at this protein range I`m almost kicked out of ketosisreduction from 1.1 to 0.6 mmol/L, and a glucose increase from 4.7 to 5.3 mmol/L, respectively. It`s worth mentioning I have been tracking macros, ketones and glucose religiously for over a month, and recently introduced a 10-parameteranalysis urine strip to this routine to gauge nitrite and protein levels. I want to know whats going on!! lol. My most recent lab work does not show any anomaly as I started keto fairly recently. But at the micro level though, I know my body is having a hard time adjusting. I feel like I am in a damn if you, damn if you don`t type of situation.

You remind me of Franco columbu when you talk about joints and protein and the fluid around the joints for a healthier stress free movement. I remember when Franco columbu was walking with heavy ass weights in a competition back in the day and his leg gave out and twist and broke so crazy and he dropped to the floor and wasn’t even worried about it, all he kept saying to the camera was, what happen now is I have a dislocated knee. OMG I am crying here. I suffer for decades now with severe chemical sensitivities! I tried everything nothing has worked but I don’t eat meat. I can see lately I am very deficiency in the B-vitamins etc. I always say I feel like I am not detoxing and I have to do enemas daily to get a little relief. I have to keep everything out of my environment cause I react to most things even my art supplies. It has and is a nightmare.

The sound effect when you said stiff joints and tight joints….I snorted a bit.
You suggested seeing a doctor! I did point out the grooves in my nails, swelling in my lower legs and skin changes. Never mentioned low anything. I eat well, meats, vegetables and eggs yet I have deep groves in my nails and one had a split in the center. What I found that has helped with the split nail is Magnesium, Calcium and Zinc. The split nail is gone but the grooves and swelling is still a concern. I an 73, take no med’s and still get about very well. So, what can I look for in my blood test that will help figure out what I am missing? Looking forward to seeing the response.

I’m not sure of that…. Maybe fatty liver is the cause of protein deficiency rather than opposite. See the common signs for fatty liver.
Thankfully protein deficiency in developed countrys is rare. The body needs to gets around 10-25% of energy from protein.

Because I became vegetarian and that was the worst mistake of my life.
I still have fatty liver and less muscles but rest I have recovered.
I was vegan and usually over hit my protein goals but it is now in control!!

I have them all. I stopped my protein smoothies and eating well even I got married. My husband was raised on fast food and junk processed food. Now I beg to be able to eat right. I am into osteoporosis, broken bones in my feet and a lot of other health issues including cancer. Eat a lot of protein! My hair loss is over the top!
Are muscle spasms a sign of not enough protein? I’m pretty sure it is, but wanted to ask. I get horrible ones in my back and neck and suffer headaches because of it.
Honestly as a vegan I tried to eat as much plant protein as possible, but I was always tired and hungry. Back to fish eggs and poultry, couldn’t feel better. I wish I knew this sooner!!!! 5 years of struggling
simply getting around 30 grams of protein a day is all we need. As long as you are getting enough calories from food that you need, you will be getting enough protein. Carbs are very important to the human body, every cell in the human body runs off of carbohydrates.

Hi Body Hub, Is whey protein isolate a good replacement for meat protein. One scoop of whey protein isolate is 26gram of protein. it has BCAA etc. I normally take two scoops, one before workout and one after. Your advice is appreciated.

I see there is an equivalency on the bottle for the AMOUNT of food one might take. but is this a replacement in any way for any type of protein supplement? I.e., if one were taking a scoop of whey that claims to have 20g OF PROTEIN, can this amino be used as a replacement for a typical supplement?
I think this is really suspect. I was on Paleo/mostly meat diet for months and that is when i developed fingernails like this. Just saying. /Shrug

Can you please do a video on the opposite? How to know if you are eating TOO much protein, esp for women? There is a myth that women don’t gain muscle easily that is just 100% incorrect, particularly in the fitness industry. I have gained so much muscle (8lb of muscle based off dexa scan just in a few months) and it has affected my heart rate, sluggishness, insomnia at times as well very low energy and nonstop inflammation/fibromyalgia. And how much a woman should eat realistically if they gain muscle fast. And with the amino acid, I would probably avoid as I am trying to reduce my muscle mass significantly but curious on that as well. Thank you.

Dr Berg i am a firm believer in the paleo/keto diet. On the down side im finding that i feel really good in the morning but by midday im very flustered and almost sick feeling. Am i dficient in something or whats going on??

So run down from this blood thickening dehydrating diet. Yes we neee healthy fats. But keto is damaging long term. PERIOD. Dr berg himself looks so depleated of glucose.. and who knows how he’s really eating behind the scenes. I do like berg he’s great at explaining and teaching. But this method? Not sustainable long term and induces type 2 diabetes. Everyone on keto binges and then feels bad and it developed disordered eating. This 1200 calorie crap? That’s a RESTING METABOLIC RATE.. meaning laying in bed all day you need 1200 allow the body to operate. We need double that when we’re working, training, parenting. I’ve been a vegetarian since August and I’ve lost a lot of muscle and I crave sweets like crazy. It makes so much sense!! I’m gonna try the vegetarian meal plan because I really need help. I use to be so strong and very active. Now, I get extremely tired the minute I start working out.

Omg the joint one is something I hadn’t even thought of but I used to have a bad left hip joint that would hurt when performing certain exercise movements but after a few months of proper macros my pain disappeared!! Also don’t forget lowered immune functionbeing protein deficient for me meant getting severely sick quite often as well as being prone to infections.

First point on cravings is immediately wrong. When you have cravings it means your body needs more carbohydrates, not protein. It needs high quality carbs from fruits and vegetables. Eat some and your cravings go away.
Ridges in nails also come with age, and you can’t stop them coming.

I have a heart problem and they told me I will begin testing for protein losing enteropathy, I can only find videos on that related to dogs, if you guys know of human videos I would appreciate the links. But I have a lot of the symptoms here: hair loss, ridges in nails, sleepless nights, weird cravings, etc. Did you know white rice, ranch and a dash of soy is fantastic!

Plant protein is fantasic, have a look at National Geographic’s Blue Zones where people live to an old age and are very healthy. They are small amounts of meat, and lots of plant protein. This clip is not the full picture.
I Started IF after seeing these videos. I recently went through an emotionally painful divorce. Last year around December i was the heaviest I’ve ever been. 245 pounds. I’m 6’4” tall and everything told me i was fat. (Especially my clothes). I’m down to 196 pounds and feel healthy but i can’t gain muscle to save my life. I jump rope, can finally skip for 35 minutes straight without stopping but my calves are so small. I’’be just bought this supplement and will weigh in soon to see if it helps me build muscle mass. I also think i suffer from adrenal fatigue and cortisol issues but will wait on that supplement because these all get sooooo expensive. If these amino acids help my body feel stronger I’ll give the other stuff a try. Thank you to dr berg for having all this amazing information out there. I’m the healthiest I’ve been at 45 than ever, (i just want to build a little muscle because i look like a flag pole)

I took a screenshot of the chart so I can keep it in my phone to look at when I’m prepping my food. I’m concerned that even if I take in the right amount of protein that my body won’t be able to process it because I have colitis, ibs, diverticulitis and fibromyalgia. I’ve been told that people who have these problems usually have trouble digesting and absorbing the protein. I did leave a comment on your fb protein FAQ post.

Oh I cannot thank you enough for this video (as well as other videos mentioning how it has become more common for women to be eating too little). I was sooo extremely fatigued and experiencing the worst pain. I was about 6 months in on the keto diet, Since I had been on keto before and never had that problem, I was puzzled by what was going on but thought I’d give the diet a rest. I came off of the keto diet for a bit with no improvement. After watching this video I increased my protein intake and I felt an immediate difference! Im now back on keto and able to stay in ketosis even with the increased protein!
