Does Having More Muscle Burn More Calories | #Q&AShow Episode 14
Video taken from the channel: Dave Dreas
Calorie Burn per Pound of Muscle There is a longstanding myth that says that if you put on 5 pounds of muscle (which is a challenge, even for young men), you could burn an extra 250 calories a day at rest (i.e., one pound of muscle burns 50 calories). The problem with these numbers is that there aren’t any real studies to back them up.One pound of muscle burns about 6.5 calories per hour. Muscles burn 5.5 times more calories than fat tissues, which burn about 1.2 calories per pound per hour.Fitness author Christian Finn writes that for every pound of muscle you have, your body will burn about 6 calories per day.
This is referred to as the daily metabolic rate.Running burns the most calories per hour, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only exercise with a high calorie burn. Things like swimming, HIIT workouts, and jumping rope are all good options, too.
One thing’s for sure. Fat does actually burn calories – around 2 kcal/lb/day. It’s not as high as the 5.9 kcal/lb/day that muscle does, but it’s not a million miles away. Does this mean you should start storing extra fat to burn erm, fat?Building muscle is an anabolic process since it results in larger, more complex muscle cells.
Anabolic processes also result in the capture of energy within your body. Since calories provide energy, anabolic processes like gaining muscle require a.Sitting, by comparison, only burns 60 to 130 calories an hour. Check out our chart to see the average calories burned for males and females, other health benefits, tips to get standing, and more.
66 + (6.2 x weight) + (12.7 x height) – (6.76 x age) = BMR for males. For example, a 40-year-old, 180 pound, 6-foot-tall man has a BMR of 1,829.8. This means that, at rest, they’ll burn.Burning calories is not the same as burning fat. Calories refer to energy, and are found in all macronutrients.
According to Christopher Wharton, PhD, a certified personal trainer and professor at Arizona State University, 10 pounds of muscle would burn 50 calories in a day spent at rest, while 10 pounds of fat would burn 20 calories. To be sure you’re burning fat, take periodic measurements. When you exercise, you use muscle. This helps build muscle mass, and muscle tissue burns more calories even when you’re at rest than body fat. According to Wharton, 10 pounds of muscle would.A review of six studies showed that athletes who lost the least amount of muscle mass while cutting calories consumed the most protein — 1.14–1.3 grams.
Calories Burned at Rest. Your BMR can generally be described as how many calories you burn at rest while awake and not moving. This is basically the minimum amount of energy your body needs to maintain survival such as: maintaining heart beat, moving your diaphragm, energy for brain function and other organ function.
The final result with method #2 is 2,874 calories per day, which should cover BMR, general daily activity, training and a surplus to facilitate new muscle growth. You’re looking to add in the range of 250 – 500 calories per day on top of calories total to build muscle optimal.A number of factors—including how much you weigh and how much muscle you have—all influence how many calories you burn lifting weights. In fact, one person may burn more than 100 calories more or less than someone else during a 30-minute weights sesh.
Ten percent of the calories you burn each day are burned by your body processing food for digestion and absorption. What Happens When You Flex When you flex your muscles, you cause them to tighten to create a bulky or lean appearance.

I’d love to do this but at my Gym the treadmill is miles from everything else lmao
You’re not 70% percent of muscles.. you’re forgetting your skeleton weight.
If your “category” wasn’t Film & Animation more people might see this video.
You know how nervous Jeff got talking about that gender part in today’s context xD
how do you only do a 10 second sprint on a treadmill unless you own your own gym… Most commercials gyms take about 1 minutes to even get up to 10 mph.
I have to take issue w sprinting over 40-50 secs, unless the person is extremely slow / out of shape, anything over 30 secs of sprint becomes an anarobic endurance exercise like running the 400, you can always run more sprints if u just want to hit a certain time of exercise milestone, but each sprint should be below 30 sec at 80-90% capacity
This must be back when you were juicing……cuz u sure don’t look like this in 2020.
Does heart rate have nothing to do with it? Leg day gets my heart rate jacked for most of the workout…
As much as I admire this guy, I have to admit that some of these videos scare the hell out of me. He Rocks
I would like to do a aerobic cardio whatever workout that burns 1000 calories after my cheat day
Can you create a workout that actually burns 1000 calories in 90 mins
ah remember when trying to do something about gender was still a joke?:)
So what you are saying is that women can’t gain as much as men. You know because of the Patriarchy. 😉
Whats the energy transfer efficiency though. Your body might only be 50 percent efficient at turning food calories into weight moving calories, which would mean you would burn twice as much as what he says here. I don’t know the actual efficiency but didn’t hear him mention it, just a thought.
3:11 It’s like Mark Cuban always says “30% of a watermelon is bigger than 50% of a grape”
Would the following be considered high intensity? 10 tire flips, 20 sledgehammer to tire,10 tire deadlifts. repeat 3 times. 30 second rest between each excercise? Usually takes me about 20 minutes. Thanks for input and advice is welcome.
Those heartbeat sensors ruin my workout by stopping the machine.
Hi, I’m a 41 yr old male that’s 5 ft 7 in. I am currently 180 lbs., I am trying to determine how many calories I need to eat each day to slowly lose fat and build muscle. I weight train 4x’s a week and cardio once a week or so. I have seen ranges from 1800 calories to 2700. Can anyone help narrow this down?
Yes but you can do relax cardio for ever! 2 hours biking in the country, more than 1000 cal!!
I work on a busy ass line in a kitchen moving constantly always wondered how many calories burned that was after a 8 hour shift
Yep hear that all the time, speed ride for 30 seconds coast for 20 then back to speed, it’s the new 7 min abbs.
I waited for until 4:21 minutes for any real content to appear on screen, then I quit.
Why does eveyone bloat up the calories burned per hour?
if i have a basal calorie count of 2400 on non w/o days im burning 200 calories per hr doing nothing or whatever my normal activities are.
If an intense hr of cardio is bragged up to burn 700 calories isnt the truth its closer to 500 cuz i wouldve buned 200 anywas just watching tv
The one you did for 1.5 times the length of the other burned more calories? Nooooooo, I can’t belieeeeeve itttttt.
Not sure how I got here, on an old Jeff video, the cinematography though… lmao
What about compound exercises like pullups etc.. Would that burn more calories than lifting weights?
Scientifically #2 should have said “sex” gender is a social construction, sex is one’s biological sex
I can’t even do one pull up. I guess this won’t help me.:-)
When you are in a caloric deficit this happens:
1. your body recognizes that you need to use your stored fat as energy.
2. your body lowers the insulin level in the blood.
3. when the insulin level drop, your fat cells release their stored fat.
4. lastly that fat is used as energy.
Knowing this doesn’t directly help you lose fat, but I still find it easier to lose fat if I know exactly what happens in my body. It gives me a clearer picture of what happens inside me, and that helps at least me.
I love thinking about all the transgender peeps out there who just got triggered by this video. Bahahaha!
The 90’s era treadmill slow mo effect is the real reason I watch this channel.
Just can’t do this sort of stuff in my gym, you’d never get on and off the equipment in time, lots of people in the way
I would think that riding a bike is the best, I burn 21.98 calories a minute… I weight 240 pounds and at 17.2 mph average I burn like 1,318 calories an hour:o but I go 20 miles so its more like 73 mins 1,604 I do that twice a day to and from work x3 so 3,209 calories in under 2 1/2 hours:D so think of it like this… my bmr is about 2300 so if I eat 2300 calories I will profit 3,209 calories a day x3 and I think 3,500 calorie deficit is a pound of fat or something so basically a pound a day x3 with only 2 1/2 hours of excerise which btw is only like 1 1/2 hours cuz it would take 1 hour to drive to work and back which is time I would have to spend anyway x3 so I would say you cant beat a bike for calories per minute:o
I burst out laughing when he hesitated after saying you can’t do anything about your age and he was stuck on gender.
Jeff is a Superman…. Of course his physical appearance is awesome, but his state of mind and his mental strength are the most magnetic things about him. Can’t stop watching….and listening
Jeff…neither a runner nor sprinter huh?
Meanwhile, you’re pretty damn jacked and have added some mass.
Love the videos!
Soooo In a more recent video you has said combining strength training and cardio wasn’t the best idea. (when Jesse is doing deadlifts and bar hops). Did you only mean that when you try and do your 1RM?
I keep watching his video’s and inside my head im like “this is fucking impossible ” just started gpoing to the gym for like 3weeks
My 3rd shift job intensity i physically move 20 thousand lbs. A night 75 lbs. At a time! I always wonder how much calories i burn in a 100 degrees warehouse sweating the way i do and the tonage in weight i move over 8 hours i always assume alot!
This is probably a stupid question but isn’t sprinting the same as running?
could i do all of the exercises first and then do interval sprints (30s on/off) for five minutes? seems a lot easier to do in a gym instead of making sure all of the right equipment is free exactly when you need it
1:27 Jeff never bullshits, even in the face of Political Correctness.
Why not wear a weight vest all day every day to burn more calories:D
Thought you weren’t supposed to mix strength and conditioning…. he mentions that in another video.
If your smart like me you would switch the running to jump rope
Where are the cool metal riffs from the latest videos?:D Great vid!
Cardio and diet burn the most weights are there to maintain muscle. When cutting off course
when I was training kids for soccer… and the people coming at the field and saw me training was very attractive because of the quality. many of them asked me how to burn fat… what they all were doing was brisk walking and that was even a brisk walk. I always told them that will gain you more weight until an extra effort and intensity is added. and what I propose if you will can do it but you would not because this will make you appear more crazy in front of others. If you are impressed by my lean 6.2ft figure running around with younger kids I look stupid but you look up at me to look smart. that’s what I said, you put some aerobic and anaerobic. the ones who took advice seriously they appreciate it always. from Pakistan, Biomedical Engineer unfortunately. But I love to workout I love soccer and going to gym and fitter than all my friends.
And @Athlean-X, thanks a lot now I can evidently support my suggestions.
Love how Jeff subtlety rips on crossfit at the end of his lecture without actually saying so outloud. I used to be a crossfit junkie, now I realize how dumb it is and listen to guys like Jeff instead
Should of done cardio on a track field or do sprints up a hill. The treadmill doesn’t do shit
I popped my bankart, my shoulder and I cant mess with a bar, any alternatives?
Great video but how can you structure this for those of us that go to the large commercial gyms where the equipment is spread far apart and constant peak hours?
Hey Jeff thanks for all the informative videos. Could you do a video describing different body types and what they consist of?
30 cals at rest!!!! What about when that extra muscle is being utilized!?
You cannot compare a much lighter you with more muscle vs a younger, much heavier you with lots of fat. Also calories aren’t created equal, so if you cannot eat junk food unlimited without gaining weight, it doesn’t imply that muscle doesn’t burn more fat than the amount of fat of equal weight. Also the fact that you cannot eat unlimited calories in general without weight gain doesn’t imply it either. The question is: did the old you at a stage where your weight was equal to the your weight now but made up of a higher percentage of fat, minus the difference due to the age difference were you then burning as much, less or more calories when at rest.
Gender = Social.
Sex = Biological.
Correct? So if you’re biologically a male but feel like you’re a female ( Gender ) what are you? I would class you as a Male. Sorry to burst your bubbles.
Jeff I am in building line
my work is to hard
I burn to many calories
what u suggest me for gaining
Dear Sir. Kindly make the workout program for overweight person. Should we go for muscle builder or tryting to be lean first?
Cycling one of best ways to burn fat, change pace of your speed from slow to faster for a few minutes challenge yourself by riding up steep hills not just one but a lot more, keep a snack or snacks with you and drink water so it suppresses your appetite when you get home, my honest opinion cycling is better to lose fat than any training in a gym
Dudes, you gotta set a foundation of knowing what you’re talking about BEFORE you start BSing around. @ 0:51 i left
If the rock bmr is 3900 and Total expenditure is 5000 his workout isnt even close to 1100 calories, if that was true he would burn upwards of 6000 or more cause of N.E.A.T and energy used digesting food
In that noobie gain stage right now, can’t wait to go gym again. Eat big to get big! without the fat etc ofc
Define tremendous amount more because 3x more is tremendous if you ask me.
Not a tremendous amount more muscle ONLY (lol) burns 3 times more than fat
people dont know what sprints are… you should be going balls out using every muscle to your advantage not just going 70% go for 110%.
I was surprised to discover how efficient the body is when I started doing cardio to burn fat and realized I’ve only burnt enough calories to negate a chocolate bar. I now do a 2-3 hour walk to burn around 600 calories.
Dude where do you get your info because it’s wrong. I have 36 years of bodybuilding experience. When you exercise, you use muscle. This helps build muscle mass, and muscle tissue burns more calories even when you’re at rest than body fat. According to Wharton, 10 pounds of muscle would burn 50 calories in a day spent at rest, while 10 pounds of fat would burn 20 calories.
your engaged forehead sends off signals of stress. straining your eyes? relax
Thanks for this info Andrew. I’ll stop nearly killing myself now just to gain muscle!! Also I was thinking that if what you’re disputing was true, how come all the muscly body builders are still having to starve themselves with miniscule portions of animal products to stay lean? Thanks and just to say youre looking in great shape1
The only thing my muscles burn is houses. Pyromaniacs need muscle mass too!
Great video as always Andrew! Very interesting to see your own calculations after the huge reduction in body fat even with the extra muscle. It was only a couple of months ago that I read some more reputable sources about how much extra calories are burned from adding muscle and had believed the 50 calorie figure up until that point. 6 cals is quite a dramatic difference isn’t it, so it’s great that you’re getting this information out there! ☺ -Darren.
I absolutely love you! Watch you everyday while cycling and hurting the gym!
Dang. I knew that lifting wouldn’t burn that many calories. But I didn’t think it would really burn that little
Bro I think watching one of your video is equal or surpassing 500 others fitness channel
This guy says the bitter truth. It makes sense now. You have incorporate cardio exercise in your exercise beside weightifting.
So does he normally do circuit style weight lifting plus the cardio session at the end? I gotta keep my workouts to an hour because of a hectic work and family schedule and I can’t really do both unless I start cutting into my sleep which i’d rather not do.
Imagine thinking weight lifting burns a lot of calories and relying on a piece of shit watch, smh. I did bike ride cardio for a week and lost more weight than I could in 2 weeks just strength training
Sometimes squat feels worse than cardio once you get up in weight
How is this not the single most watched video on this entire channel?!
Thank you for that bit of information, I’ve always wanted to know the answer to that question and I now finally know it. I will continue doing cardio but weight lifting is my goal. Maybe do an hour of cardio and weight training sessions could be later on in day….yeah that’s sounds cool
The more muscle you have the more calories you will burn through the day. Muscle burns calories.
But the activity of lifting weights doesn’t burn much while you are doing it…but it is greater with more muscle.
Incline that threadmill to 12% at 4km/ h with 20 set burpees combined every 2 min, then we talk.
Why do you charge a shit ton of money for your programs and books?
Like the gravitational potential calculations in the beginning
They found that doing 15″kettle bell snatch with 16 kg and 15″ rest for 20 minutes you burn about 400kcal.so maybe is more than coach greg says
Coach Greg, I thought that lifting weights actually burns more calories than LISS and your explanation makes a lot of sense. I may miss something here but there are two ways you can burn calories while lifting weights. Indeed, your body needs energy to repair damage to your muscle or build new muscle. That may be a lot more energy. Also, the more tension your muscles are producing the more energy they must burn. Otherwise, following your formula, when I do static squat I burn 0 calory because there is 0 meter of movement/ That is obviously not the case. Therefore, I must burn more calory when doing 200kg squat than 100kg squat. However, that should not make for the huge difference in volume between lifting weights and LISS.
Walking medium speed up enormous long steep hills burn mad calories.
So many good points in this video, also way to shut down all the other bullshit on YouTube man, keep it up!
Lol, BRIAN Shaw weighs 430lbs, and burns 100 calories walking to the mailbox.
Lifting builds the machines that burn calories during cardio. Muscle mass burns calories during cardio, lifting builds muscle mass. They work together.
Ok, I’ve seen some fancy pushups…I’ve even messed around with some gourmet pushups. But you got me with the helicopter pushups. I’m impressed and humbled.
I knew it. I listened to all the fitness “gurus” and tried to burn fat with weight lifting. I was skeptical but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. They must know something right? But fucking surprise, surprise, over the course of six months, I just packed on muscle and gained weight (In a Deficit). Then I plateaued in weight for six months. I just started a LISS program and I lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks. Crazy because so far I’m retaining the same muscle and strength gains so far. Should have just done what worked in high school sports in the first place. Which was running.
Lifting weights has an afterburn effect depending on how hard you work in the gym. If you tore a lot of muscle tissue, your body will burn a decent amount of calories rebuilding.
Is your body weight getting factored in as well in your leg day? I get that it won’t add that much but the data seems biased to intentionally be lower
Sad news for Jari Love fans. She says, “I didn’t know you could use weight to lose weight.” In Revved to the Max.
All my coaches would say lifting weights burn much calories, but thanks to you, now I realise they are morons.
I just put on a Greg video while I work out so that I’m too scared to stop
I think this is actually very interesting test because i coach Greg Douchette in one of his videos is saying that with the with weightlifting in the gym you only burn something between 150-300 calories and he suggested
Oh man this man just break my old wrong believes,he is a real genius, huge respect sir
This is not even something people are curious about. This is just wrong. Calories burned does not even come close to cardio compared with weightlifting. The treadmill calories burned is the worst way to get an accurate measure. If you want to know an amateur will not burn more than 300 Kcal on their heaviest leg day. They can easily burn much more than that by running for an hour. The main focus of any weightlifting session is to build muscle and cardio along with diet is for creating a deficit. Both are important because in the long run, building muscles overtime will increase your metabolism so you can afford to have more calories!
Gregg surely it’s moving from point A to B, not necessarily the amount of weight?
Wow. I loved that skateboard movie that u played at the beginning
Ha! awesome fact checking thanks for doing all that research to assess how much calories is burned during those exercises! Thanks a lot that’s what i needed this week. And now that i started focusing more on cardio as i got some weird back pain so couldn’t do weights, after 3 sessions of 30 minutes of cross trainer in consecutive daily sessions i look 10 times better than after 3 weeks of weights based workouts O.O 3 days of cardio and effects are amazing…. mind blown. And the best part is that i dont have to take a day off to recover from sore muslces like happens after running i can do 30 minutes of cross trainer and feel tired after working out and the go again the next day but after 30 minutes of running i would need an ice bath and 2 days of a break. so i think this will be a good progression for me to go back to running in a good physical form. As running requires a person to be fit, you shouldnt really try getting fit by running if you have been sitting on your bum all day every day its a recipe for tendon injury which take many years to heal or they just dont. (speaking from experience)
I was not expecting to find a video with Doc Greg not yelling. Can’t go to bed until Coach Greg yells at me.
Yeah but maybe weightlifting doesn’t burn that much calories but sleeping and repairing muscles requires a lot of calories. I mean think about how much energy a pro bodybuilders muscles require? Though I agree 1 hour of cardio will burn more calories short term rather than an intense 1 hour workout
A beginner question: Greg, how do I know how much kalories I burn on my cardio? Cause I can not trust the machines at the gym.
How do I calculate? Approximately…
i always make sure to get in at least one mile everyday on the treadmill even though i’m lifting 5 days a week ☺️
Quick question. Don’t you need to increase calorie intake to build muscle? Gotta be burning those extra calories somehow.
Thank you so much for this video. It completely change my view on cardio.
Burn your calories by breathing more heavily. I burnt 10k cals today by doing this.
I like that chanell, I do not care about calorie burning. I clicked on the video just cuzz its 09:56 long.
I usually calculate 200 kcal for 60 minutes of lifting weights.
Steve Turano! One of the few people who you can count on for truth!
I do a typical 531, 5×5 and then a 6 minute ab routine. At 165 pounds I typically track about 180 calories each day at the gym. My friend is convinced he’s burning 500 calories from lifting weights for about 2 hours. One of us fat:)
I always underestimate the calories I burn working out because I know I underestimate the calories I eat. Like today, I rode the bike pretty hard for 70 minutes. I gave myself 300 calories for that. I probably burned more but that’s all I “count”.
Thanks man…..you just taught me a lot and saved me a lot of time,!!!
Okay this video explains why as I gain muscle I suddenly want more protein. My metabolism is increasing fast. I have been doing calorie deficit and decent amount of protein along with weight training 3 times a week, and body weight exercises.
I tried to tell people on Facebook that you are not burning much lifting weight unless you are a real body builder. I told them to stick with loss cardio but they ain’t listening.
You’re changed the way I look at fitness! Till I watched your videos I was convinced that cardio slows down your metabolism. Now I see how wrong I was. Thanks a ton Greg.
I don’t think the example is right. You might need at least 1 cal to perform that lift but one can perform a movement as inefficiently as he wants. But i guess the point is right.
The first bike ride in 30yrs, I couldn’t make it around the block without stopping. 6 weeks in and I just did a 40 k ride with lots o hills without being out of breath. My legs hate me but they are recovering.
This is sad, but it doesn’t change the fact that I ❤ lifting weights, and hate traditional cardio.
Love how he literally just uses physics to calculate the caloric work assuming 100% efficiency and a closed system
What about adding in Heart Rate (increases), rest time between sets), and the Kreb Cycle?
Leg days are slow though. All other body parts I lose about 800-900 calories in an hour.
I had quite much muscles all my adult life, and before gained my muscles (some time during my teens), I was very slim and never had a need to lose fat, but into my 20’s I gained quite a lot fat too, and again and again I tried to get rid of all the extra fat but I never really succeeded. So I can not compare how hard it is losing fat with a muscular frame vs. a non-muscular frame. I heard, with a lot of muscles, it’s a lot easier to burn fat, but that is still a myth to me, cause I never experienced it. So, the concussion would be, that this ain’t true at all? Another question, if you do water fast, will the body start to burn away fat or muscles first? In periods I fast 3-4-5 hours in the morning, uncluded a long walk or run before I eat lunch. I’m sure I ran and walked over 150 miles during the last 3 weeks, but i lost only 2 tiny kg’s! And i eat less and healthier. Its really frustrating. btw, I’m 44. Does the metabolism slow down after 40? Seems that if I didn’t train at all I would burn almost no fat. When i train like hell, I still don’t burn a lot. I hope this will change soon, but that got to be after X mas 😉
All those hours days weeks years lifting boring chunks of metal and counting calories eating plain boring foods when you when you could learn a craft skill like boxing or Martial arts or learn to play a
musical instrument
Sooooooo, lifting weights DOES burn a lot of calories or it DOESN’T? Technically, building muscle does burn more calories, but while you are doing it you don’t burn as many calories. HUH?!
What do you think about kettle bells? So weight lift first and cardio in this order?
I hear you, but after cardio, can I lift some dumbbells or do hip thrusts? I don’t want to get flabby or have loose skin. It happens to some women. Please answer?
if you dudes would like to get ripped quicker without wasting a single another minute in the gym, then you must look closely this video tutorial SIXPP.COMRoutine is not a prison, but the way to freedom from time.
Consider spin classes for calorie burning. I’m a 6’1″ 170lb guy and burn 300+ cals in 20 minutes, it’s a tough workout though, about 200 watt average
Great channel. I have to mention that if you arent super fit, squats will burn way more calories than a 20-30min walk. Even the recovery of a hard squat workout burn more.
I appreciate this as being one of the few fitness channels that the dudes aren’t on roids
Greg, I’m about to hire you as a coach.
One thing, I have a myzone heart rate monitor, it’s a chest strap.
I burn about 800 to 1000 in an hour of hard HARDER THAN LAST TIME weight lifting session but it’s more of a crossfit style with minimal rest.
More of a cardio with weights.
I’m 180lbs lean, about 10 to 12 percent.
You may not burn much from the actual weight lifting part as opposed to cardio sure, bit also you have metabolism and everything that is in play with that. Bmr and all that burning calories at the same time. So just something to think about.
So I only burn about 12 calories, I’m fairly lean, probably 14%, eat what I want wait gimme a vid on how to get fat
I hate how gullible people keep on relying on their fckin watches and are like I burned 600cals and I try to explain this and they never believe me! Then I’m like keep doing what you’re doing and get fat:)
Airborne is my favorite movie of all time. Thanks Maharashi
6 years later this man takes his body from superhuman to god
Didnt look like he used the incline on the treadmill which can add to the intensity and heartrate. But treadmill and other forms of running, cycling, and similar cardio is good for a warmup.
Greg your math is quite off. Human body efficiency is between 8 and 12%. At an average of 10% and completely ignoring the science behind how the body works you will burn 39.2 calories moving 400 kg up 1 meter.
Greg Duecette would have a lot to say about these results. Lifting weights will NEVER burn more calories than cardio.
what is the phone app you used to view the heart rate & calories?
This all depends weight lifting to lose weight is for Endomorphs.
I don’t why I am replying to video made two years ago. Maybe I like ranting to myself. Unlike your other awesome videos, the conclusions here shouldn’t be taken seriously. Trying to compare interval training with weight training in terms of cardio absurd. This video seems to imply that the laws of thermodynamics can somehow be beaten. Extended interrupted low intensity cardio (.i.e. running and cycling) will always burn more energy than weight training simply because the body is moving as a complete unit. On the other hand, interval training, which involves stopping and starting, will obviously not burn energy consistently as the heart rate is merely being elevated but that does not equate to energy expenditure. That is why HIT as it is promoted by most fitness professionals today is a scam.
You need them both but i personally find i lose more fat with cardio, weights give you that good shape underneath and cardio helps to reveal it. That being said diet is everything
It’s a good video, but you really shouldn’t record at a gym. Kind of a big social fopa.
when I do weightlifting instead of crossfit cardio, I feel like I sweat more. I would have to measure with my watch. Thank you for your video 😉
I guess none of you are physicists. Or else you would just do a calculation on the amount of work needed to complete each of the task. I bet you guys also think that a 5k run would burn more calories than a 5k walk because of the increased heart rate or something.
hahhahahah stupid bodybuildersq are weak, actaully, look at soldiers skinnier than these pgghts and actually stronger
First, great workout! Why do you consider the 30-60 sec runs a “sprint?” That time and the intensity you exampled were aerobically fueled, NOT anaerobically fueled.
Kind of a weird conclusion, sure weight lifting is about the same when you don’t include the time resting and setting up but if you have an hour to spend in the gym you’re going to burn way more calories doing cardio than weight lifting.
I don’t agree with his conclusion. He could have easily increased his average heart rate on the treadmill to 150 and made it steady by increasing the incline if he wasn’t already tired from the weight lifting. I do 30 minute regularly at 150 beats and it’s very easy. Also you can do cardio every day if you wanted to unlike weights. Nothing against weights I do them regularly too. But can’t beat cardio for burning calories
i think Cardio burns WAYY more calories than weightlifting. you have alot of good videos that have helped me and i use your dumbbell exercises myself. but this one i had to disagree with. first of all i don’t know how accurate the watch is how it’s calculating how much weight you’re lifting? i understand it could tell your motions/movement but strain/pressure i dont know how it can do that? and second you weren’t even going on incline on the treadmill dude. incline burns double the calories as you would going straight and you don’t even need to run on an incline you can walk and burn as much calories like 3mph for example.
I love all your videos and this is an interesting experiment for sure. But Heart rate is entirely separate from calories burned. Heart rate monitors are way off when tracking calories. heart rate can vary from caffeine, temperature, hydration and other factors. calories burned can only be measured by the actual work being done, weight and distance traveled. Even the hardest weight session won’t burn more than 4-500 calories, you’re moving weights only relatively small distances and rep ranges. Cardio, moving your body weight sometimes several miles will always burn significantly more calories. Think about a 200 lbs man walking 4 miles vs benching 200lbs for 5 sets and take into account the overall weight being moved over the distance. There is just no way it’s possible for lifting to burn as many calories as a cardio session.
How many calories you burn during a activity is not based on the heart rate. It is more about how much weight you move a given distance or how far a distance you move a given weight. So if your cardiovascular system is good, say you are a elite runner. You will be able to burn more calories in a certain time while running because your fitness allows you tu run faster. This guy is probably a lot better at weightlifting then he is at running an therefore he can burn more calories in the gym.
Well i need cardio especially Fighting movement not to lose IT you know what i mean cause i am a Warrior So i keep IT half half calories Are good Aš much you burn them
Yeah I can’t be bothered with cardio I just do the weight lifting.
Strength vs Cardio… i prefer the the first one. In my opinion, being strong is more practical, unless your job requires you to run for a long time.
Get a fooking fitness tracker people!
Input calories as accurate and honest as possible, let it track the calories you burn
Yes, they are not perfect
But they are fairly close and actually line up with all the numbers coach Greg just gave
The vocal clip in the beginnig was from the movie “Airborn.” My favorfite rollerblade movie of all time!
Great vid! Thank you for finally showing us how it works, not just conjecture.
Wrong again. Weight lifting doesn’t burn that much calories but bigger muscles do.
What? There is no way this is true. Unless you are walking more than you running during cardio then it probably true. Also, the most important key to loss weight is how the way you eating. It doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you do if you eat like a madman than there is no way you gonna lose weight.
It is said that 10 minutes of sex is equivalent to 30 minutes of slow running….
1 other problem, you’ll hit your daily steps goal while laying in bed with a Fitbit. Very very very inaccurate. I personally have the Charge 3 as well because I refuse to hop on the Apple Watch train it’s a joke.
Great channel Greg!…taking the bullshit out of training. #logical #sense #honest
Weightlifting does not make us burn calories after the workout?
well… you can’t burn the same amount with strenght training… (at least if you base calculations on HR).
during exercice (like biking or running) you can keep >80%mHR for 3h, or >85-90%mHR for >30 minutes, and it won’t happen during weightlifting
I’d probably stick to cardio for calorie burning since it took half the time to burn almost the same amount of calories.
In my own experience coming from 386lbs down to 210 (6’2″) and keeping it off for 6 years now; a good balance of both is best. I enjoy a good lift session and being able to go out any given day and run 10-15 miles if I want. I have asthma and hardly ever need to use am inhaler anymore which I attribute to improved cardio health from running.
Is it just me or is Jeff John Turturro’s ripped little brother?
What people don’t realize is that cardio is done without even thinking or forcing yourself to do it? What do I mean…. walking between workout machines is your cardio right there unless you physically fly to the weight machine lol.
This is bullshit. Lifting weights doesn’t burn jack even if your heart rate is high. That’s not how it works
When your max HIIT heart rate is my 5 minutes of medium steady state. oof. My highest HIIT heartrate is 201
Have you also considered recovery metabolic needs? To repair muscle and fuel growth a caloric intake of 25-30kcal per kg of body weight would be good for recovery alone, even more considering the goal is to enlarge myofibrils.
Take this into consideration along with calories being burnt 150 calories plus about 200 doing cardio. The caloric needs would have increased
In order to be comparable, you needed to do the HIIT at the same intensity as the lifting, so you needed to incline that treadmill to 10 deg. HIIT means you are at RPE 10, so waaaaaay higher than 140 BPM.
Try an exercise bike, I find they spike my heart rate a lot more than running.
Wooow…… Plz also watch this

Greg this is your best video I ever watched!! You’ve opened my eyes!!
Dude if you do HIIT on a treadmill correctly you should be maxed out on your heart rate in no time man. And keeping it up long a syou can you turn into a calorie incinerator.
Thank you for this! I have been beating myself up over no cardio for the past two months but I do antagonistic supersets and I don’t want any time away from the weights to do cardio and I am so happy you posted this video
If lifting 400kg 1 meter requires 1 calorie, how much does negative sets require? I don’t get it
How do the weights win, if you only did cardio for 20 minutes but you lifted the weights for 44 minutes?!! Basically you spend 2x the time on weights, therefore the weights lost, fool! Get your facts right!
U are amazing younger version and now Love So dedicated to your Body +Love it very INSPIRATIONAL
Your heart rate should be alot higher than that. For cardio you should have kept your heart rate above 160 maintained for 30 min. A 30 min run is not out of the ordinary.
I don’t trust HR monitors without a chest strap. Those things are proven to be all over the place when measured on the wrist.
Always do both. What is the use of a mascular and strong physique if you can get tired easily when you run or walk a mile and vice versa. The key to optimum health is to be balance
Well if you didn’t stop running every 30 seconds you would of burnt much more calories. 230 lb dude would burn around 770 calories at a 9 minute pace.
Love the “Airborn” sound clip xD one of my all time favorite movies
Does cardio makes your skin tone lighter according to thumbnail
I have used multiple heart rate monitors and they all say after an hour ive burned 400 calories
Gday mate. I’m a track athlete. When I train for speed work, which is high intensity, the heart rate should be around 180 bpm. With a heart rate around 129 bpm that is under what most marathon athletes would race and train at. What I’m trying to get at is that at 129 bpm you are a lot less effective and should have been better off taking some rest before going from the weights to the treadmill.
Just watched a video from 2018 or 2019 that says “do your cardio after weight training, or better yet on a different day” but never before. I guess he changed his mind since 2013.
Hmm. What about the after burn affect? A guy weighlifting whose used anerobic will burn more calories then the one that didnt right?
Wrong answer,.75 x your weight is the amount of calories you burn running per mile and then it’s.63 x your weight calories burned per mile walked.
In one line both cardio and weightlifting is important in a balanced amount according to your goals
I agree to this video. You may make your current workout plans far more effective if you are taking the right meals to stay away from fat intake and become ripped. One of my friend employed in gym field suggested me “Moro Muscle Ripper” to get a six pack and seriously works! Simply Google search “Moro Muscle Ripper” to learn more.
Haha I see Jay Cutler doing videos all the time out of Golds lol…ide like to see one on boxing fitness compared to weights…
If you desire to gain some muscle, i suggest you Google the term “SSM Muscle Method”. You are certain to get the appearance you want.
If your desire is to bulk up, make sure you Google the term “Aston Muscle Ripper”. You are going to achieve the appearance you desire.

Sounds just like Steve Carrel! But seriously, this is really helpful information.
It would be a shame if you did not lose weight when these normal people accomplish it easily using “Fat Blast Formula” (go google it).
I’m glad you have no muscle working when you’re at rest, no back muscles were used that day
I used to run 8mph for 45mins. After putting sprints into my training this past month, I’m now a lot fitter and able to do 9mph for 45mins. Thanks for the great tip, Steve
This is horseshit, muscle mass definitely burns far more calories at rest.
Steve, we know you’ve been lifting over 25 years. Is there a certain number of years of training where a person can say they’ve realized/maximized their muscle potential? Thanks in advance for your time and attention.
Steve, what are you thoughts on the decline bench? I use it as my 3rd exercise for Chest.
Coach talking but I’m watching the Kitaes in the back going cray cray….
I have a ques. How do people that competitive eat and are thin stay thin. Cause i realize they have to train to perform these tasks and some of the foods are loaded with garbage. Also, usually the winners are the thin guys compared to the usual overweight contestants. What are ur thoughts on that? Im sure alot of people wonder this. Thanks. And welcome back to youtube.
