“The Okinawa diet is comprised of mainly vegetables and soy, with small amounts of fish. Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyu Islands located off the coast
Of Japan between the East China and Philippine Seas.
cool an extra 25 years on earth eating mostly sweet potatoes
Holy shit. I barely noticed this was text-to-speech. Crazy realistic.
This is nonsense. Today’s Okinawa diet is very different from the the 1949 statistics collected by Americans.
is it okay to translate the video into Arabic and put it on my channel?
State one academic source that says they rely that heavily on meat, you idiot. Okinawans stated eating that much meat? LOL Google prices of meat in Japan, you moron. You don’t know jackshit what “academic sources” entails, obviously.
The okinawans diet is based on PORK!!!! this is from data after ww2 when the us destroyed their pig population. They eat pork before and after every meal. Dr Michael greger is a dishonest fraud.
totally lost all credibility when you talk about Dairy as being healthy.
We are what we eat,and usually live in the same environment as our food and prey.Pig people eat pigs, Rats eat with rats in new york, Fish people like the Japanese eat fish, and Okinawans must be like plants eating so much plants. So, if you eat humans, then what will you be?
“Mediterranean” encompasses a wide range of regions: Southern Europe, Middle-East, North Africa. The islands of Ikaria and Sardinia have similar health, longevity and lifestyles as Okinawa.
Eating a purple Okinawan sweet potato with sriracha sauce as I watch this.
Its interesting to see how people live and eat in different areas and how it affects their health. I live in Sweden. My dad told me in his grandmas cooking book there was mainly organ brain dishes. Literally all of them died of heart attacks. My granddad had a stroke. Both my grandmothers passed in cancer 69 and 74. Its crazy how it can differ so much.
I thought japan has the largest suicide rate in the world and not a lot of people get married or even have kids.
That states absolutely nothing about the emperical AMOUNT of pork that they actually eat. I’ve read many sources that say pork, poultry, and beef account for only 3% of their diet; fish being about 10%. That’s still a very low portion, compared to westerners’ diets. Also, what the older and younger generations of Okinawans eat are quite different. Their staple food, regardless, is still sweet potato, rice, fruits, and vegetables.
I eat a wfpb, low-fat (only overt fat is from 1 tbsp flax, and not everyday) but not until 80% full. When I eat. I eat.
Food is the most powerful medicine!
Moving from the Japanese ideal of being thin equals beautiful to healthies’ beautiful.
I think considering that everyone is a very different beauty, in terms of weight, in terms of size, look. I’ve noticed that Japanese women are getting skinny thinner and thinner. There’s also so much information about different diets, and overwhelming and confusing… Its good aware of a good diet is to inspire women to make changes to their diet and also their lifestyle, diet, exercise, sleep based on hormone, health, longevity, beauty as well as skin in the future.
Read the book “ the Okinawa way “ almost 20 years ago, more of a way of life, than diet, certainly changed mine!
Within a year, lost over 100 pounds, and never put it back on. Recommended
Could that 1% be really important of eating fish and eggs for the DHA, B12 and iodine? I really don’t trust consuming anything that comes out of a factory.
their diet was actually meat-based, and plants are NOT the most nutrient-dense foods… this is ridiculous
You forgot that they enjoy pork, a lot. Pork ear, and pork belly are some of their delicacies. Spam is something They enjoy. They also like snake. I am assuming they mean eel, which is considered a fatty meat. Purple sweet potato is a staple food, but many times cooked with copious amounts of white sugar. Where I live, there is not much purple yam in the produce aisle. Dr. Joel Wallach claims that the secret to their longevity is local food grown in highly mineral rich soils. They do use a lot of wok frying methods using commercial seed oils. This is not ideal, either.
the okanawans USED to have the highest life expectancy in the world, but their diets have changed significantly since the 60s (more Meat, more fat, more protein) the diet used to consist of 95% plant based and more then 80% carbs when it had the highest life expectancy, now their life expectancy is lower then the average Japanese.
One mistake: At the 3:40 minute mark, Dr. Greger refers to the Adventists that outlive Okinawans as “vegetarians.” They are not. They are vegan, which is a very different eating approach than vegetarians’. Vegetarians eat unhealthy cow’s milk, cheese, cream, yogurt, and other dairy products. They also eat eggs. Vegans do not eat any of these fat-laden, hormone-filled foods. Even the most unprocessed milk is filled with estrogen, by its very nature, being produced by pregnant cows to feed their calves.
It is great that all of us have access to all the information researched and proved by big names universities and the C.D.C. of Atlanta has made mayor discoveries of the benefits of caloric restriction diets and fasting healing capabilities. Even tho, there are so many factors in this planet right now that ours ancestors didn’t had when they made their course in life, illnesses, death and sorrow have been on the table since the beginning but I’ll like to give u some vital hints to became closer to the life we shall never lose.
Is death stronger than God? Of course not! How could death—or any other “enemy”—be stronger than “God Almighty”? (1 Corinthians 15:26; Exodus 6:3) God has the power to undo death by means of the resurrection, and he promises to do just that in his new world.
How sure is that promise? God’s own Son, Jesus, tells us with words that can fill our hearts with hope.—Read Mattew 22:31,32.
What, then, may we conclude about Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all faithful servants of Jehovah who have died? Jesus made this forceful statement: “They are all living to him.” (Luke 20:28) Indeed, Jehovah’s purpose to resurrect his faithful servants who have died is so sure of fulfillment that he thinks of them as living (Romans 4:16,17). God will keep all such ones in his limitless memory until his due time to restore them to life.
Does the prospect of being reunited with a dead loved one appeal to you? If so, remember that the only true God Jehovah is infinitely stronger than death. Nothing can stop him from fulfilling his promise to resurrect the dead.
Read the Bible every once in a while we don’t have to wait to be in prison to start to read it, just investigate why that book take over the times and attacker’s that stood at her with the purpose of hide its real message to everyone who like to discover it!
Yeah they live long… they’re twigs and weak af, would get colonized in like 2 hours
Frig that i dont want to live forever….I want to live happy until my genes burn out..
This is the same doctor that said fluoride is good for you. If you listen to him for health then you’re an idiot
SWEET POTATOES:D Purple sweet potatoes are SO filling. I know when I eat 2-3 a day I lose weight (because it’s so filling)
It is like you heard my prayers to eat one of these types of sweet potatoes daily every day until I die.
Not accurate. Where you get this info?? I’m from Okinawa. Born and raised there This is not even close info. Sorry
First of all, only one needs to read reliable sources, such as academic articles. Secondly, pigs (and other animals) that aren’t factory-farmed are very expensive and are considered a luxury by just about every culture that consumes them this is especially true in Japan where there’s little space for livestock. “Begins and ends with pig” is most likely referring to the usage of pork (or other animals) as flavoring agents, not to be confused with consuming whole masses of them.
I will personally burn down every God Damn fast food and soft drink company in the world! They can’t keep getting away with hurting and killing people!
This information is from a 1949 study after WW2. It lasted for about 8 years because the pig population was decimated during the war. Their traditional diet has always been pork based.
People in Okinawa are forbearing and forgiving. That is the secret of Ryukyu, the secret of our island peoples.
Okinawan’s man source of protein as he said at the very end of the video is tofu, only 5% or less of their diet is actually fish.
This is total BS. Okinawans eat pork almost every meal. How could that be less than 1%? Yo, stupid doctor, please come visit Okinawa and see for yourself.

Ogimi is part of Okinawa where most 100 year olds live in Okinawa. And here’s Ogimians’ diet:
In Ogimi, compared to the average Japanese diet:
(1) People eat more meats, (2) the intake of green and yellow vegetables is three times higher, (3) the intake of legumes, particularly soybeans, is 1.5 times higher, and (4) the fruit intake is also higher.
Another point worthy of mention is salt intake. Okinawa is the only prefecture that has made it below the goal of 10 grams per person per day set by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and that figure is 9 grams for Ogimi.
http://kanko.vill.ogimi.okinawa.jp/village/index_en.html
So, Doctor, go fuck yourself.
It’s important to know that while 98-99% of the diet came from plants, most an Asain sweet potato, that 1% fish/pork/egg, (a small serving every few days) was pretty important to their longevity and nutrition. IMO the greatest factor was not just the plants but the limited caloric intake.
This really just proves that a small amount of animal products is good for you. The Okinawans are able to absorb the fat soluble vitamins from the plants they eat through dietary fat from pork and some fish.
Okinawan people love pork though… Check any foodist documentary about Okinawa.
https://youtu.be/ubu_0cbsLv0 in reality, the okinawan diet is far from plant based. Pork is central in okinawan cuisine and It’s eaten nose to tail. Okinawans even go as far to claim their pork consumption is responsible for their longevity and health. The vegetable dishes of Okinawa aren’t even exclusively vegan cus they more often than not includes bits of pork and veggie dishes are always traditionally fried in Lard. Okinawans are also fond of raw goat meat

can someone please help explain something… if their diet was 60-70% sweet potatoes… based on a 2,000 calorie diet, wouldn’t they be eating like 14 potatoes a day!?!?!?
Amazing benefit of REMOVING nearly all FILTHY grains from the human diet,,, benefit of using LARD for cooking,, eating pork HEAD to TAIL
No mention of white rice? When I was there (USMC) it seemed everyone ate rice, veges, maybe a little fish.
Does anyone know or at least has an hypothesis about why pesco-vegetarians had a slightly higher life expectancy than vegans in the Adventists Health Study?
Our main starch is rice, noodles, some sweet potatoes but a lot of veggies. We do not 2 cups of nuts!
Did you notice that they almost don’t eat fruits?
I didn’t expect it…
Food is the most powerful medicine!

so did they have to be adventists? does religion contribute to the diet? /sarcasm
Bro
Understand one thing!
Your diet has to be according to your body type and is also governed by other factors like demography lifestyle etc.
What is good for my body may not be good for you!
So be intelligent and identify what suits u which is the only way to help you live longer and healthier…not just blindly copying any diet coz they do it and they live longer!
Key words: “some things.” For other things, you can have a say with lifestyle.
Thank you! I’m so tired of being told we’re supposed to eat other animals. I’ve been eating a plant based diet for 5 years and I feel amazing. I went vegan entirely after experiencing a change of heart after watching a documentary called ‘Earthlings.’ I’m 99% convinced that there was a time that civilizations that had been influenced by Buddhism and Hinduism (many eastern countries) were vegetarian/vegan a long time ago-that spiritual enlightenment would have brought them to that path.
One of your best, Dr. Greger. Everyone in my family is being sent a copy. They aren’t going to be happy with me!
Okinawa is considered a Blue Zone region. Here are the five characteristics of a Blue Zone:
A strong sense of family
Low smoking rates
A largely plant based diet including large quantities of legumes
Consistent moderate physical activity
A strong sense of community and engagement in the community
Only one of those characteristics has anything to do with diet, and only one of the regions (the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, CA) are vegetarian. None are vegan.
I believe people should concentrate on those other four characteristics more, especially the ones pertaining to family, community, and connections. Nutrition is confusing. Do what works for you, there isn’t one diet that works for everyone. However, everyone can benefit from healthy connections and a sense of purpose.
I do not to live to 100 in this society. I’ll take my red meat and bacon thanks. Modern Western culture is torture, might as well live high, enjoying whatever you can and get it over with quickly! Sweet potatoes and vegetables taste like wood.
This is a biased and close minded analysis. Everyone knows the American diet is shit. You should at least be comparing blue zones with blue zones. Also no one talks about how they grow and prepare their food. Vegetables are not the most nutrient dense food because you can’t just live on them. There are so many other factors besides what you eat that determine lifespan.
How long do you boil sweet potatoes for? Also do you recommend drinking the water for optimal nutrient intake? Thanks
I’m screaming.. even the Okinawans have said that they base their diet around pork and fish and y’all are saying it’s because of their plant based diet.
Small portions or not, traditional Okinawan diet includes fish EVERY SINGLE DAY. They also LOVE pork, although they reserve that for special occasions. Their longevity is due to restriction on sugar and processed foods (like KFC), not restrictions on meat. Edit: Also, low caloric intake. They don’t eat like pigs, although they do eat pigs 😉
…This one is a saver dock…just started on Stokes purple sweets…what a big difference between Stokes and yellow/orange…Thanks
What about the Japanese (before McDonalds) in general? They live a long life and eat meat, fish and eggs all the time. But of course they have heaping helpings of vegies and grains of course. But don’t knock meat altogether.
If they ate around 1200 calories, and 70% was sweet potatoes, they would only be getting 20g protein, is that enough? i’m intolerant too almost all foods except sweet potato so i’m doing something very similar
Who cares. They eat a a serving to a half a serving of meat a day. That’s still not remotely a vegan or vegetarian diet. You vegan/vegetarians need to stop lying and pretending that the Okinawans were vegans/vegetarians.
But then the meat heads argument is that the meat consumption was so low because the pigs that they ate a lot of “apparently” were killed because of the war so they were eating not as much meat when this was recorded, but then everyone says they are huge fish eaters, though this actually says they eat not as much fish as you would think.
So, Okinawans live on an island and eat 15g (.5 oz) of fish a day. Smells fishy.
Have you been to Okinawa, met the elders, talked with them and ate with them?
If the majority are living to be at least 100 years old with no dementia, heart disease, cancer, or diabetesI’d say that whatever food groups that aren’t being included in their diet is wisdom at its supreme. The restrictions have proven to be NOT necessary at all. Their body has no need of them because their diet isn’t causing any damage at all like American diet does.
Soy is considered healthy on this diet but in the western world we still try to demonise it.
I’ve been vegan for 3 years and I have stomach pains joint pains and foggy head, should I stop? Lol
Not true, they eat a serving of meat per day. That’s far, far, far from a vegan or vegetarian diet.
I want to go there once in my life. God bless you all centenarians
I am Okinawan living in Singapore for 27 years I think secret is relaxing life style & food and I think I can not live such a long, cos of stress life here….
They don’t normally mention the Okinawans eat lots of pork and they live far enough away that most people don’t know any better. I believe the reason why Buettner gets it wrong is not because of a deliberate attempt to deceive, but more likely its another example of what happens when we look at the world through the current medical dietary dogma. After all, if you believe that meat and animal fats are bad for you, then by default you wouldn’t list them as contributors to longevity. Which is a shame because people might continue to be misinformed
Something people forget about these centenarians is the fact the world they lived in is completely different from the world newer generations live in now. Life was simpler back then. Diet has little to do with it. Not everyone can follow a plant based diet especially if legumes are emphasized. Sorry but if I’m constantly bloated from beans I won’t be stress free.
a video about the longevity in Okinawa:
https://youtu.be/kqvKN1UOV6k
how do they get b12 since their diet plant based. did they take dietary pills?
The people of okinawa sick because of 1 fast food restaurant, all hail america
conveniently forgot about the pork and fish. Dr bullshit strikes again praised by his uneducated followers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to9rhIwWJg0
g o v e g a n:)))) seriously it’s good for ur body + for the planet
oh man, purple sweet potatos is extremely tasty…need to get me some tonight
A document with American ideas is poison. This is a bad documentary. Western diet is pure crap
Lies and more lies, why do people think they can get away with this in the age of the the internet? Look up Okinawa, island of pork…
Okinawa was annexed by Japan, and is not really Japanese. It was part of the independent Ryukus Kingdom influenced by both Chinese and Japanese culture. The US occupied Okinawa and gave it to Japan rather then let it become independent.
So the best diet for longevity is to eat mostly plants, mostly starches, and about 3 servings of animal products per week like the Okinawans and 7th Day Adventists. Though I cant imagine how shitty it must be to eat sweet potatoes morning noon and night.
I first got to try the purple sweet potato a few years back. Yum.
I’m taking the Hara Hachi Bu discipline to another realm with fasting 46h between 3000 calorie meals
Oh you mean those people who eat tons of pork you people are a joke
My luck if I ate mandarins every day I would end up with diabetes
I heard that it’s yams not sweet potatoes, that the Okinawans eat as their staple (and I mean real yams, not what’s called “yams” in the supermarket).
Eat healthy raw vegetarian food and salad…avoid antibiotics medecine that’s the simple funda
Japan is a beautiful place with a healthy and simple lifestyle yet now it is changing. We hope it will not change.
My doctor recommended this system [Go here= https://t.co/dBnv3xaIdy ] to me. I was looking to lose a significant amount of weight, and needed a plan. This diet book has done miracles for me and my husband! We follow the plan and both lost over 20 pounds in the first month. This is a well written book that will give you the tools you need to start eating healthier and regain control of your metabolism. I can’t say enough good things about this book and the diet. This was a life changer for us!
The unfortunate truth is, is that you won’t prolong your life span at all. Not unless you eat this way for at least a couple of generations, to introduce the genetics down the gene pool. It’s basic genetics, which are hereditary.
At best you will improve your functionality of your body. But I’m afraid that this will not allow you to live longer.
When will people finally realize that some things are just…genetic stuff?
What a load of B.S!
Mate the reason we think they only ate vegetables is because that’s all they had during ww2. During the conflict nearly all of the pig population in Okinawa was gone. The Okinawans had nothing but vegetables to eat.
This caused mass starvation until the end of the war. The us government recorded their diets until 1949, then they just assumed that they only ate vegetables and a small amount of fish for their existence.
Then the pig populations suddenly rose again. I don’t think this man has ever been to Okinawa today.
Their foods are centred around pork! If you don’t believe me then search it up for yourself.
Actually every organism on the planet can increase their longevity if they decrease their total calory intake. As they did. They also eat meat. Everyone can increase their lifespan with a lower calory diet. It’s just that people don’t want to do it. Also comparing people of the east and the west is is kinda meh, because we have different physiological responses to many foods. Most Asians have problems with milk products. you didn’t mention the probiotic bacteria which is a major factor on every diet. Why vegan diet gives longevity? Because it’s harder to cheat with crap food than it is on omnivore.
The Japanese diet centres around fish and seafood. Pork is highly prized in Okinawa and beef and fish are everywhere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj_2b-3k47Y
Experts agree on what type of diet is good for us! Dr. Gundry calls himself a ‘Veg-Aquarian!’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VUwjJNwY-I
a wholesome clean diet, meaningful work, companionship and joi de vivre -that’s what we need in America. Their climate and location also look wonderful.
Both of my Great Grandmothers outlived everyone in including the Jay the Juiceman and Atkins and all these young 80 year olds dying too soon. She worked outside on a farm ate fried chicken and drank whole milk ate bacon at breakfast. So Blah Blah Blah Enjoy your Carrot and Kelp Tofu salad
Maybe they learned to swallow ther pride better an keep ther mouth shut. They learned a lesson already I’m sure they wouldn’t wana learn it again.
Thanks for the info bro! Awsome information and defo a good discipline
Dr. Michael Greger shows some dishonesty in this video.
In the Adventist study, the pesceterian group (fish, dairy, eggs but no meat) had the lowest risk for all-cause mortailty (hazard ratio 0.81). The vegans adventists came out only second (hazard ratio 0.85):
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4191896/
The same dishonesty pattern also appears in this article on the Adventist diet:
https://nutritionfacts.org/topics/adventist-health-studies/
The article says that vegans had the lowest chance of getting diabetes (true) but didn’t mention at all the superiorty of pesceterians in all-casue mortality.
Most people I think would live to 100 if they all followed a healthy diet from the beginning of their lives. But if you start late in life, no diet will boost you to live to 100. My doc told me by 50, it’s too late. Said we can improve the rest of what life we have left, but won’t be able to prolong it because too much damage is done. I have an elderly friend who is 95 and been a SDA since he married an Adventist at age 27 and stopped eating meat, he tested positive for CV19 and you’d never guess this 95 y/o man had it!!! Amazing.
Pork fat is the secret to longevity. Pork fat is similar to olive oil and all the blue zones eat pork fat. As for Okinawans only eating a small amount of animal foods bahaha .
Hi there, have you discovered Zippy Fat Loss? (search for it on google) You will discover the serious crimes we commit against ourselves. With Zippy Fat Loss, you will discover how to burn off fat quickly.
Don’t all fruits and vegetables have anti inflammatory properties?
Wow!I did -25 lbs in 30 days.More here hawght.so\#ZsBqTKv
Not true. You need to rely on academic sources and not make shit up. This is the Okinawan diet as stated by the Okinawans.
“Begins and ends with pig” is most likely referring to the usage of pork (or other animals) as merely flavoring agents. No one’s arguing that they don’t use livestock as part of their diet. Funny that in the same article you quoted from, a photo of two dishes show only 2 small pieces of pork, the rest being plant-based. Since you’re quoting wiki, another wiki article explains their traditional diet is most fruits and vegetables with 10 different references.
1:07, where is this document available to actually read? I can only find the summary.
This is false The OKinawa diet is mainly pork
https://youtu.be/5pyo2TjfSqY
This comment section is full of sources. Go back and re-read. P.S. Stay away from the vegan propaganda. They only people who are claiming that the Okinawans are vegetarians are vegans.
Have you been there? They always ate massive amounts of seafood and as do all bluezones who eat more animal foods than USA besides the 7th days who are vegetarian. The Adventist vegans have high cancer rates.. This channel should be called Nutrition Lies. People go visit Okinawa. Don’t listen to this dweeb of a man.
Dr. Mcgregor isn’t being 100% honest. If you look at the studies on Adventists, the longest living were the pesco-vegetarians, they out lived both the vegans and vegetarians. Pesco-vegetarian diet is 100% no meat, but it does obviously include fish.
Hello! I’m Stephanie.I did -45 lbs in 2 weeks.Go to hddiet.gs\#cvr3
This video leaves out one important detail at the end: Okinawan’s life expectancy has INCREASED in the past generation, since they stopped eating their perfect near vegan diet.

Feeling only 80% full is a very subjective feeling, not sure how one would be able to compare it to 70% full.
Fyi they eat pig like once a month or smth. Their proteins come mostly from soy.
Someone is not benig honest! wikipediaAnother characteristic of Okinawan cuisine is its reliance on meat. Main protein sources are derived from livestock, especially pigs. Okinawa was not influenced by the ‘non-meat eating practices’ of the Tokugawa shogunate, Okinawan had a culture of using livestock since the Edo era. Young people of Okinawa today have the highest obesity, diabetes and heart attack rate in Japan.
