When trying to figure out if a source of carbohydrates is good or bad, remember this: The higher in sugar it is, and the lower in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, the worse the food is for you.Good carbohydrates are essential for health and fitness. Bad carbs are unhealthy increasing the risk of obesity and illness. Are you being carb smart?
Complex carbohydrates: Polysaccharides like fiber and starch are known as complex carbohydrates (or “good” carbs). They contain longer chains of.While many good carbohydrates are also low in calories, others contain the same number of calories as simple, refined (bad) carbohydrates. For example, whole wheat bread (a good carbohydrate) and white bread (a bad carbohydrate”) contain the same number of calories. For more information on carbohydrates, and the differences between good and bad carbohydrates, consult with our weight loss doctor at Dr.
Urshan Health and Weight Loss Center. We can create a personalized weight loss plan that contains the right amount of “good carbs” to help you lose weight and feel great. The other difference between bad and good carbohydrate is that the bad carbohydrate is the refined, simple sugar. The reason this is not the more desirable carbohydrate to eat is that eating it gives you a surge in your blood sugar and causes you to gain weight. It can also promote the development of diabetes.
Okay so now you might be thinking, okay, simple carbs are the “bad,” ones and complex carbs are the “good” ones, but that’s not quite true. Fruits can contain simple carbs but also contain other important nutrients and fiber, which affects blood glucose in a different way by releasing into the bloodstream slowly, according to Harvard Health Publishing.Good Carbs vs.
Bad CarbsContentsGood Carbs vs. Bad CarbsGood Carbs Bad CarbsCarbs and The Glycemic Index (GI)Glycemic Index Classification Carbohydrate are one of the main fuel sources your body uses for energy. In the weight loss and diet world there has been much debate over carbohydrates and their role in weight loss.
Some diets will tell [ ].Not all carbohydrates are the same – contrary to what one might think. There’s such a thing as healthy carbs, and there are also bad carbs.
Of course, the best carbs to eat are those that benefit our health. The good news is, it’s easy to distinguish between such carbs. We’re going to spot their differences below. Are carbohydrates good or bad?
The short answer is that they are both. Fortunately, it’s easy separate the good carbs from the bad carbs. Or, the difference between French fries and side. Not all carbs are created equal.
Carbs from whole, fiber-rich foods are generally healthy, while added sugars and refined carbs are extremely unhealthy.Carbs (particularly the good kind) should make up about 45 to 65 percent of your daily calorie, says Moon. So, for a 1,600-calorie diet, that’s 720 to 1,040 calories worth, or 180 to 260 grams.
Carbs in their natural state are the good carbs while the processed ones are the bad carbs. 2. The fiber content is high in good carbs and low in bad carbs. 3.
Carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy diet, but there’s a big difference between good and bad carbohydrates. Your body needs carbohydrates to make glucose. Glucose is the main source of energy for your body. But there’s a catch: there’s a big difference between good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates.
The main difference between good carbs and bad carbs is that the good carbs have a low glycemic index (GI), and they raise blood sugar levels more slowly whereas the bad carbs have a high glycemic index and they raise blood sugar levels rapidly.

For the past 3 weeks I have been eating 2 baked sweet potatoes, baked chicken strips, steamed broccoli, pinto/black beans, spinach/string beans, and a loaf a brown bread for dinner… is this good or should I change it
If you are a healthy person with no health problems you should continue eating your carbs? diabetes may be waiting for you around the corner and it’s going to be too late.
Carbs are not preferred but prioritized as carbs converts to glucose in the blood and can be toxic if the concentration gets to high!
Bottom line, like it or not, cut carbs lose weight…..FACT! 3 weeks ago started cutting carbs, about 40 a day, have lost 16 lbs, NO exercise either
Carbs are not the devil because ‘they make you gain weight’. yes.. too much does but the issue with HG carbs is that a huge insulin spike means it takes longer to get to base line, and insulin is the hormone that stops fat burning. FACT. LG is better because although it still goes up, its not as high so takes less time to come down again.
its personal preference. do what works for you.
Never realised instant oatmeal is high glycemic. Thanks man! I will look for rolled oats from now onwards.
Carbs are “essential” for GOOD HEALTH. They are so much so, that the body will make glucose from non-carb sources via gluconeogenesis. In other words, if we don’t provide the body with the essential nutrient “Carbs,” it will make them from non-sources! That tells me “carbs” are essential. You might want to watch my video I made on good vs. bad carbs, it’s the BEST VIDEO EVER made about Good vs. Bad Carbs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibNsrrFdj5k&t=14s
He should definitely slap his fist more frequently love the channel tho
White rice is not bad.. In fact it’s better than brown rice as it doesn’t prevent nutrient absorption.
This was a mind-blowing. When these diets recommend 50 or less carbs a day it must be for people who don’t exercise. When I was on keto but not exercising the recommendations were fine but now that I’m lifting my body is starving. I couldn’t understand why the scale wasn’t moving..a friend suggested that I eat more. After about two days of adding beans back into my diet I feel much better and although I don’t see much difference on the scale my clothes are much looser! I figured the less you eat the faster you lose weight
Does anyone know if Onigiri is bad for you? It’s just a ball of white rice lol but I’ve heard that it’s healthy before
Nice vedio, got the information which I was seeking. Thanks!
I would love it if Johnny Vegas came behind Amanda byrams and covered he face in a gooey custard pie Leaving her coated in gooey merange leaving her covered in gooey custard and cream that is
Now caramelized on her making her look really messy.
So that means i can still eat white rice but not that much so that i could still lose weight. Right? Please correct me if i am wrong. Thank you:)
at least it’s not a keto, keto, keto video, percentages of carbs to proteins to fiber to eat would have made this an excellent video.
This guys videos are shit, first he says eating low carbs and high fat and protein will make u lose weight but nowwwwwwwww you gain weight from it. Just stfu and stop doing this shit
Patola… Sawali si ek ladki… Fit lag rahi hai… JhakkASs:p
but mam kya fruits ke carbs bhi kya shrir ko sirf sugar hi dete hai..
Keep it simple, calories in v calories out.. be in a deficit and weight will come down..
Very helpful, cleared out some doubts I had about dieting. Thank you!
Can you still eat cakes, ice cream, and chips as long as you’re under your caloric intake?
Before IF was fad, I was doing it and eating steamed white rice everytime + protein (meat or fish) + vegetables. It was great! I don’t know why people make it so complex these days.
This is what I want to hear, although dr. Berg would most likely disagree
This video helped out in understanding Carbs in general…Thanks!!
Should have had two charts SHOWING a list of good carbs, and a list of bad carbs
Carbs are ok as long as you eat very lean meats. Once you start adding fats then it turns into a bad combination.
Oh you are getting so close to saying it…. all the societies you mention that thrive on a high carb diet do so until they add one drop of sugar. Sugar is rare in nature, and before refrigeration and refinement was only seasonal, a signal for your body to store fat and prepare for winter. All the athletes that become pre diabetic and switch to low carb could stay high carb and heal themselves just so long as they drop all the sugar, assuming they caught it before too much damage took place. This argument also perfectly explains why the Asian countries were fine until very recently. If high carb fanatics embraced this fewer people will switch to low carb diets!
You are not an authority. This is reductionism. This confuses the General Public.
I ate whatever I wanted I just stayed in a calorie deficit and made sure I ate enough protein. When its all said and done calorie deficit is what matters. I went from 38 percnt body fat to currently 11 percent, all that blood sugar crap is bull, calorie deficeint is the key
At ( 4:15) where he mentions “if you have a lot of weight to lose, or have health problems like metabolic… probably insulin sensitive”
I’m sure he meant “insulin resistant”…
The only good thing about brown rice its that I won’t be eating alot of it cause it’s not as good as white rice so I end eating less rice
I just watched two dieticians explain this and your video was a much better explanation of the mechanics behind carbohydrate consumption. Thanks
Ie watched alot of videos explexplaining carbs lately and this is by far the best, it really helped me understand them without having to use all of the confusing scientific explanations whi h are valuable just confusing also. Great video definitely subscribing!
So how much carbs should I eat? I have been working out for 5 months and my wight was 71 kg and now I am 77 kg and my length is 175 cm.
I played around with my macros in the past. I once set my protein the highest and I was bloated for 2-3 days and I ended up gaining a bit of weight. So I tried to lower it and increased my fat intake instead to around 55%. It was okay, but I did not lose any of my body fat. So, I then increased my carbs intake and had more carbs for dinner, strangely my weight went down. So, it’s really up to your body, everyone is not the same. Just do some test, trial and error to find out what works best for you. I have achieved my goal bodyweight and I am maintaining it now. On weekdays I mainly consume fruits and vegies as the sources of my carbs and also wholemeal bread. I eat mostly protein and fat during daytime, then have more carbs at night. I cheat every weekend to have my fav cake or ice cream, but in moderation and my weight has not budged at all. So, this video really explains that carbs is not something that you should be afraid of and I am the proof.
“White rice will spike your blood sugar at a much more higher rate than brown rice” Really now, reaaaaaally. White rice is like 71 on the GI scale and brown rice is like 66, lmao. BIG DIFFERENCE.
really useful video but still don’t know what I’m doing wrong….I’m 1,60cm and eating around 400-500g carbs such as white rice potatoes, homemade brown bread + 60-80g from dairy products, from meat and nuts and some fruits and around 100 150 protein from eggs and meat and dairy products every day and still i weight around 55-58 kg cant fucking gain more weight
I’m getting even leaner but this is around 3 calories i don’t understand
Dont eat anything that is made of or has these ingredients: sugar, white flour, powder (onion, cheese, etc) or something that is fried or highly seasoned or flavour. I dont understand when some people want to lose weight but they still keep eating cookies, chips or chocolate.
If you have instant oatmeal original (low sugar) is it still a good carb?
You actually got it. Fiber is indigestible n is not necessary for bowel movement. People on carnivore diet have proven this already. The goal of carbs is to refill glycogen stores for muscle building. The bran from brown rice n indigestible legumes cause digestion issues thus = inflammation n more energy spent digesting food n making you feel lethargic.
This is all superficial stuff. What’s more important is understanding your self and when or where your trigger for insulin is for your pancreas. That’s something no one can tell apart from yourself. The issue isn’t the food. You have people addicted to drinking coke and don’t put on pound of weight, yet others work out, eat healthy and still struggle losing weight. People don’t understand themselves intrinsically and without insight they fall victim to every new thing uttered by so called YouTube experts…
Sugar is making people fat. This guy sounds like so many fitness gurus: I am going to lie to you, this will create 3 effects. 1)when people fail they blame themselves not this guy.
2)this guy has it together they so keep coming back, that’s what this guy they wants. If he gives the truth you will stop watching him.
3) by lying he stays in the top 5% of people in shape in short, it’s all good for business.
Stop watching guy I am.
Thanks for the tips, I’m going to stick to oats yams and brown rice for carbs. I’m no longer doing the keto diet.
I stopped bread and got cut, lost 7 pounds in less than 2 weeks. Fuck carbs…
Keto idiots
need to watch this video. Also, the Mayo Clinic has a write-up online explaining the benefits of good carbs.

Where’s he post that summarises this guys videos. Can’t listen to him take an eternity to get to the point with the monotone voice
Rambling rambling rambling video sucks commonsense will tell you this information
Please make a video to discuss sweet potato vs normal potato why normal potato has such bad reputation? They are still vegetables, aren’t they?
Goodbye oreo shake goodbye gummy worms goodbye captain crunch this time forever
I have lost 13.6kg since I discovered the existence of this guy.
Carbs are carbs…. But….. God.. It’s not that dificult to distinguish good carbs from bad ones… Just stay away from prosessed food… Get rid of your ice cream, refined sugar, m&m, chocolate, merengue
Something specific about how to evaluate your metabolic type, and therefore what levels of carbs, fat and protein is optimal, would help. Nutritionists often say “everyone is different” but don’t show exactly how.
Thanks for this, you make excellent, informative videos. One thing I’d like to see is a guide on what carbs are ‘good’ and what carbs are ‘bad’. It may be obvious but it isn’t to me
Thank you for this video! I am so tired of hearing people saying carbs are carbs period, people comparing carbs in fruits to carbs in let’s say a dessert there is a MAJOR difference you can’t compare natural carbs to processed and added sugar carbs, it is so much better to eat a lot of fruit than a piece of cake, your body handles it differently you feel differently and perform differently, so if your on a diet or something just focus on eating WHOLE foods not something that’s packaged and processed. Trust me your health will change a ton and you will feel better and look better, I personally don’t think being on these “Keto” or other diets are very healthy but instead of eating all that junk we see sometimes just eat pure good foods ex. Fruits, vegetables, beans, protein, if you want pasta choose whole wheat pasta etc
On page 23 there is a fantastic nutrition trick that will tell your body that you’re not starving and keep your metabolic rate sky high. Now this is going to shock you yeah there’s a type of actual saturated fat yeah you know the kind the media tells you is all bad no this saturated fat is healthy and even supports fat burning metabolism.
The three main contributors to modern ill health (obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, clogged arteries, out of range cholesterol) are seed oils, processed refined grains, and sugars. These make up the majority of the modern diet. It was for me. I eliminated them, switched to whole foods and fasting. All ills reversed or healed.
Max, if carbs are essential, why do you recommend the ketogenic diet?
Anything that your ancestors didn’t eat, do NOT!! eat it, simple
I had started to think this way a couple of weeks ago.
that it might be the best way to go
so I added more carbs and yes it is proper for me
thanks for the confirmation
Didn’t like the suggestions at all. It’s just the opposite of what u hv been saying in all ur other videos. It’s very confusing. U haven’t backed up wat u hv said about high glycemic index Carbs being equally good at weight loss with reference to any Research Papers…u just said ‘recent research has proved’. Now ur viewers are confused as to what to really eat and what not.
this has been the most elaborate video that I’ve seen explain carbs in such a clear way. i watched 6 videos prior to this one but this one answered all my questions. THANK YOU
I think they need healthier choices in food, most stuff people crave is fatty foods, even trying to eat heathy can break the bank, a lot of people I hear say I can eat fast food cheaper than cooking at home, like the vid tho
Hey Amanda, miss you from SFTW.
So on food we buy, the carbs and the carbs which sugar are referring to are the carbs that slow release and the carbs that instantly turn to sugar?
One study shows that you should eat protein, fat, vegetables before eating carbs. You should only eat carbs before workout (Pre-Workout)
10 years ago a Kansas State Univ professor proved he could lose 27 lbs in two months only eating candy bars, chips, cakes, etc. from vending machines.
Yes there are healthier options so just pick healthy foods you like and keep a caloric deficit of 500-1000 calories a day but get doctor’s blessing before doing anything radical. Don’t worry if you have an addiction and treat yourself once a week by replacing a regular meal with a 300-400 calorie treat. You will lose weight, it’s been proven millions of times, and a treat will keep your sanity in check. Exercise will speed up the process maybe 1-2 lbs a month, but to reduce the chances of getting excess loose skin don’t rush things too much and keep overall weight loss at less than 2 lbs per week. This has been my diet routine every time I’ve gone on a diet and it always works. Good luck to everyone!
I need desperate HELP! I love your videos so thank you for all of them!! and I might have missed one that answers this so forgive me I’m new but…I am having trouble sleeping the whole night. I need to wake up at 5am for my husbands job so I eat 3 meals a day 5 hours apart. My last meal being at 530-6pm because we eat right when my husband gets home. Ever since I stopped eating at night I wake up at 1am, a few weeks. I googled it and it said it could be that blood sugar gets low and it wakes you up. so last night I ate a clementine right before bed and it helped me sleep til 3am. little better but I can never get back to sleep and I risk waking my husband bc i have to go to the bathroom once I wake up. I’m sure fruit will slow my weight loss. any advice on how to sleep a little longer without ruining my weightloss?
Regular potatoes have THE SAME GLY LEVELS as sweet potatoes…they also have more protein. Fiber is NEARLY IDENTICAL. SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW SWEET POTATOES ARE BETTER THAN WHITE!!! It’s bullshit…
My relatives all ate white rice and glutinous rice (for desserts) and none of them were obese and they lived until 90-100 years old. White rice is not bad. But they did not go to fast food restaurants and buy processed food like people do these days.
4:16 u can definitely put on fat on still by not having carbs just eating hit fat foods… see that’s why I work out everyday
Do you know we don’t actually need carbs in our system? Because our body produces, so whatever extra carbohydrates you intake is just another unnecessary sugar.
Just look at the description so much fucking words and I’m illiterate
Whole Foods, fruits, veggies, grains and stay away from sugar (sodas!) and processed foods. Stay in the produce section of your grocery store. If you’re have some meat now and then have the fatty cuts, it inhibits insulin to counter the meat. Lean Meat spikes insulin as high as sugar. 95% of the isles are packed with what you should avoid. Simple as that. If you can pull it from the ground, vine or tree, wash it off and eat it…. you’re good to go. Healthy eating folks.
I lost 18 pounds in a month by cutting all the sugar, white bread, potatoes, and starches. No drinks but water and coffee. Gym 6 days a week. Works with common sense.
Omad fasting that’s what I’m doing. Fast for 24 hrs eat one meal. That’s it guys.
this is misinformation and pseudoscience. The main drawback to eating processed simple carbs over unprocessed and complex ones is the vitamins and minerals you would lose if your diet consisted of 100% processed foods. The ‘takes longer to breakdown’ is true but it doesn’t affect your body composition in any way. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3257742/ The right approach is sustainable dieting. Eat enough veggies and fruit to get your daily micronutrition and unless you are diabetic don’t worry about the rest of your food eat what you enjoy.
Alright listen up rookies. This guy is speaking facts. Want to know the truth? You NEED TO EAT THE RIGHT TYPES OF CARBS. Do you really believe in the Keto diet being a long term life solution? Are you gona live your whole life without carbs? Feeling miserable and energyless? Like common. Good carbs are red potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, nuts, chick peas, and the ones he mentioned. Although you should still monitor the amount of grams you intake, these are for say “friendly carbs”; and it’s also about what you do with the carbs. If you’re not working out, yes you will gain weight and not see progress. You guys need to do something with all that energy (Carbs) and you will see results. I’ve been taking 120 140 grams of carbs a day and have been building muscle and shedding weight.
Great video. Shout out to AN for sticking to the evidence instead of the Taubes/Diet Doctor scam artists
No grain. I m Italian and I eat no more pasta pizza bread ad rice potatoes and all cereals. I eat only sweet potatoes fruit and vegetables
..
there is no one size fits all? So what, some humans are fativores? Some are meativores? Come on bruh. Through milennia people ate mostly whole unrefined carbs / fruits / veggies. Meat was 10x less fat and processed oils did not exist. Please avoid spreading nonsense.
Really liked the video
Although I have some doubt
What about white rice, as an Asian its a staple food here and no one can dare imagine to complete their meals without it
Is it good? Is it bad
And if good how much can we have in a day?
youre telling me to lay off everything good in life.
Im going fat.
Nice vedio, got the information which I was seeking. Thanks!
Truth! I dieted and after two weeks of eating healthy I had and two donuts and a piece of pie at work as a treat meal and felt terrible…it’s like my body rejected it. Good to know that I don’t need to eat that junk
I’m starting to believe that eating processed carbs alongside with lots of fat is what causes weight gain and insulin resistance. The carbs raise your insulin levels which then store the ingested fat while using the carbs for fuel. Then your blood sugar drops and you’re hungry again, even though you did have enough calories. It’s not one thing or the other.
The Truth About Carbohydrates & Low Carb Diets https://youtu.be/LuOvsAafTjk

Great video. Liked the way you explained it, easy to understand and informative!
