KOSHAS EXPLAINED | The Five Sheaths of the Body
Video taken from the channel: Kailasa’s Blissful Athlete
Kosha means “sheath” in Sanskrit. In yoga, the term is used to describe metaphorical layers within the human body. This meaning comes from the ancient Hindu texts called the Upanishads. The koshas are often likened to Russian nesting dolls or the layers of.
Experiencing Your Five Sheaths. Sit comfortably with your head, neck, and trunk in a straight line. Sit upright without straining. You’ll feel both alert and relaxed. Close your eyes, withdrawing your awareness from the sights and sounds around you.
Bring your full attention to your physical body.Rather than just addressing the physical body, yoga ascertains that there are indeed five bodies, five layers of self or being, that must be addressed for overall healing to take place. Known as koshas, meaning “sheaths” or “layers,” each of us has five bodie.
Yoga offers many models that expand your view of the human experience. One of them is the kosha system, presented in the Taittirīya Upaniṣad. This Vendantic model presents the human organism as containing five koshas, or layers of consciousness, from the densest to the subtlest elements of existence. It sees our human experience as happening in five layers or dimensions ( koshas ). These layers are interwoven and affect one another.
When we change patterns in one layer, it can affect and induce changes in another layer. They use the image of.The Yoga path of Self-realization is one of progressively moving inward, through each of those lampshades, so as to experience the purity at the eternal center of consciousness, while at the same time allowing that purity to animate through our individuality. These. It is described that human consciousness is folded into five layers, or sheaths, ( koshas) around the central point, containing the self (chitta).
The self is enveloped in the sheath of bliss. Both the self and the bliss are not experienced although they are always there, and always protected from all sides.According to the Taittirīya Upaniṣad, there are five layers, sheaths, or kośas to our seemingly individual existence.
Similar to the eight limbs of Rāja Yoga, they range from the densest part of our being (the body), to the most vast and subtle (inner joy/peace).The first layer of the koshas represents the physical body, including the skin, muscles, connective tissue, fat and bones. When you pinch the side of your waist and feel the skin and muscle under your fingers, you engage with annamaya kosha. As per yoga philosophy, every individual is made of five layers.
One emcompassing the other. And, as we practice asanas, pranayam, meditation or selfless service to others, we experience the inner layers. These layers or sheaths are known as “Koshas,” and they.
Consciousness in humans flows in 5 layers of the body to reach the Atman (or Self, according to Vedanta philosophy). These 5 layers in yogic tradition are called koshas. Understanding the Koshas becomes easier when one is aware of the concept.
The Upanishads describe the koshas as a system of five layers of awareness, starting with the physical body and moving inward to the core of the self. The practice of yoga takes the individual deeper into the self through the koshas that make up one’s being, thereby bringing one.Yoga philosophy describes the body as composed of 5 sheaths, bodies or levels of being. These are the five koshas (pancha = 5, kosha = sheath).
The word maya can also mean sheath or veil. Thus the panchamayakosha are the 5 sheaths which veil our true being. Many people have a limited understanding of yoga, thinking that it is restricted to the asana practice of increasing flexibility, toning up muscles, relaxing the body, increasing strength, improving balance and finding stress relief.
While yoga does all of the above that.Manomaya kosha of human body is also called as mind-sheath, the layer after the Pranamaya Kosha. The manomaya sheath consists of mind and manipulates.

Excellent,Sir.
consider some defense as in DARPA know that this are all energy and you can tap into this then modify it,then?
Do you think it’s impossible?
May be this is energy war in a way?
Just asking?
Think with a open mind.
But even if you are using human bio field or bio energy or bio photons have you acknowledged the ancient people or giving credit to some DR intelligent and just doing a cherrypicking.
Denying the fact that it never existed or somebody just invented it?
Ayurveda specifically has mentioned different types of food for the 3 doshas viz. Vata, Pitta and Kapha…we can all eat raw food.
please if you can make a video on the 3 doshas and Nadis and how to increase Ojas and reduce Ama for a health life
Could you please share a method to align the koshas? I feel mine are disaligned, my energy feels all over the place, it’s very strange. Thank you.
A power-packed msg on Koshas succint and rich! thank you Dridda ayya!
I found it interesting when you said that there is more prana in the air during brahma muhurta. Does that apply to the different seasons of the year as well? Are there any noticable differences? If that’s the case perhaps spring and summer have more prana because nature is blooming more then.
Hey! You are your wife-Kundalini Yogini popped up in my dream..that is too funny..as we have never met. See what watching videos does, gets into the subconscious. So weird.
Interesting perspective, although there is a moderate amount of misinformation regarding the genetics, chemicals in peoples food and such. If you want to learn about the physiology of the body, you should check out a channel called crash course. They have like 50 videos explaining the human anatomy, chemistry and biology.
Everybody teaches Pranamaya kosha Second….but sadhguru teaches manomaya kosha Second…????
Try this, its a blast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q7IXTOPvOs / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2WMnnrbyFk

thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with the world. namaste
The Manomaya Kosha is not the mental body it’s the emotional body from where the karmic patterns influence the Pranamaya Kosha (etheric body) and the Annamaya Kosha (physical body).
The Vijnanamaya Kosha is the mental body.
So much knowledge has been dropped in this video I will have to watch it 2 or 3 times. Thanks Driddha.
Whenever you post a video, I do listen throughout, this is no exception, it’s just that i become sad because I cannot practice the yoga, my legs won’t carry me:(
This is great. I watched the entire video. I like how relatable you are
So basically if you learn how to retain all your semen prior to ejacualtion you could actually have sex and enjoy it and still have all the benefits yoga-wise?
If the problem is within ur mother and ur brother become angry, u can start first consciously moulded her, if not then took courage to make brother conscious. Because I have apply this to my family it is working. Remember don’t see ur mother as helpless, everyone have immense potential empower and provide them courage. Realize brother of his misconduct with any feeling of putting him down. Har har mahadev, may God bring happiness to ur mother and ur family.
Wishing my Sadhguru a very happy new year
As always great video,
Yes I lasted the whole video wasn’t long at all.
I’ve been watching swamiji videos on this very topic, I can say you did a great job explaining it.
Appreciate it keep making them
You spoke with great sincerity and it was greatly appreciated thank you
I never imagined epigenetics as for thought as opposed to body/genetics. Technically, it is only thought /consciousness not matter so genetics are first affected by thought.. mind blowing! See: Bruce Lipton
If we practice mastrubating and have orgasm without ejaculation is it ok for spirituality
Thank u for sharing this information. What I doubt is that the layers that are present are theoretically represented as concentric, and the innermost layer is the annadamayakosha. If it is so, then please tell me why do we say that one layer is inside the other? Is it really so. Who said it.? And wht actually represents the serial wise layering of the koshas?
Koša means a container and it is part of Annamaya. Mayas are layers. The system is called PAÑCA MAYA MODEL
We have so many voices in our head; which are we listening to?
Yesterday I wrote in my journal: “the Yogic sciences filled me up with nothingness and left me with everything. Thank you Sadhguru for giving me the right tools to do so.” Since I started the yogic process,
I am able to hear my own voice; not society’s, not my parents, not my school’s, but my own. My mission became to share the freedom I experience and help others to experience it as well. I would love your feedback and connect with you since I am just getting started. Let’s make this life a beautiful life, it is time.
What a jewel of a teaching!!! Thank you, Thank you!! I will be recommending this one to family and friends and watching it again and again.
Hi! Thank you so much for creating this video. I wonder could you tell me, how long would it take to do a 1,000 breaths meditation or breath work?
Thank you Ji! Very succinct information, a great introduction to understanding psychic sheaths ♥
I just found your content after deciding to do a video on the Kosha’s myself. I thank you for your spiritual journey and I look forward to watching the rest of your content!
Fantastic info as ever, and beautifully explained. Thank you!
Oh my goodness! Thank you for this video! You explained it so well to my western mind! I was able to connect it to things I knew and understand already! I am blessed to be studying to become a Yoga Teacher, but had so much trouble with this section of my studies. Thank you
No television here. A waste. Only used for dvds for education of health, etc. Blessings. ☀️
Nithyanandam, please help me cognize ‘intention’ before doing Yoga ritual. Currently, my body is getting stiffer, too the point in which my left knee popped on the inside parti of the joint this morning while leaning forward over Bhatanasana. This stiffening is predominately in hips, thighs, pelvis and back. This is making my upper back roll forward. Straight spine is not happening at present.
How nice it would be if more & more human beings resolve to realign the 5 sheaths they are gifted with by life!☺️
Very nice! Though, the word “maya” is quite different the way it is pronounced: maaya means illlusion, but “maya” means “full of, composed of.” With the latter word, you must not extend the “a”:) Rolf pronounced it just about right:)
Koshas? Koshas?? Koshas???????
Now, talking about taking a deep breath I remember someone who had a habit of taking one deep breath per day he would go to an empty room in the premises to take his deep breath in solitude. One day he had, inadvertently entered a room which another had exited just then. He realised, after taking his deep breath, that the room was vacated because the other person in that room had fouled up the air and couldn’t bear the stench himself
Sadhguru is acting like that transitory body for the whole around him so that everyone can touch the bliss body within each of us. Thanks Sadhguru!
Great and inspiring video. I do have a question. Can you pls link some materials or write more about cleansing the mind-body and the technique you have mentioned?
Really appreciate you taking the time to spread the good word! Cheers!
.. Decided To Use Your Video for Our Yoga Group Homework On Explaining The 5 Koshas

How to bring sufficient balance in our pranamayakosha or the energy body and keep it in full vibrance?

Utterly enjoyable and clear introduction to the subject. Hard to find. Do you have any recommendations for the best sources of knowledge specifically about the koshas and the various vayu?
