The only time my bp is high is when Im at my doctor’s office. He is condescending, dismissive, rude, and refuses to accept that I do NOT want to take pharma drugs. Actually I think his bp may go up even more than mine does! I ask him for advise on alternative approaches to treatments and he reaches into his bottom drawer, grabs an 8×11 handout about eating too much salt and slams it on the desk. Here! This is a health care system??? No it is nothing close to that. I have noticed similar things. Curiously, I often find my FR935 seems to match my HR to my cadence…. Wonder if I wear my watch too loose? The Tickr does not have that problem

Suunto has never skipped a beat (no pun intended) both with the HRM and the watch itself. Although at the moment they are transitioning Mobile apps and online communities so have been having the technical glitch/bugs but they are getting on top of it quickly enough. All in all a great watch manufacturer.

You should have plotted the difference to better visualise and analyse the accuracy. If we assume that the chest strap is 100% accurate, then you can try to fit this difference to a gaussian normal distribution and compute the variance, as a quantitative measure of accuracy. I would be curious to see how that would come out.
Personally I feel that my fenix 5 optical HR is too inaccurate for most sports I do, therefore I always couple it to a garmin chest strap for activities.

Maybe it depends on the model… My wrist HRM is terrible!! FR935. I’ve cycled up a 5% incline, getting out of the saddle and everything, an my wrist HRM says I’m at 90 BPM!

Interesting topic. A few months ago I carried out an experiment. I have a tacx heart rate strap and a polar m600 watch. I monitored my activity, walking, cycling, jogging, resting and sleeping for 24hrs. The watch was almost identical to the strap, 1bpm lower but only on the odd occasion. Maybe because my watch is made by Polar rather than your garmin who are experts in mapping and GPS rather than cardio-tech.

I would like to find a fitness tracker/watch that would track all 3 but havent come across one and stumbled across the Tickr X and wonder if it would do what I want. I havent had much success finding anything that will work for indoor spin classes. I see this has indoor cycling listed just wondering how acurrate it is. Would like to track cadance, HR, calories, etc. would this be a good option for running, weights, spinning? Then maybe just get a seperate activity tracker or a watch that can pair with it? Or do you know of a activity tracker that works well for these three activities? Any advice would be helpful!!! TIA
I use the TickrX chest strap and have a Fenix 5x watch. Found exactly what you did. At times on the runs the Fenix would have my heart rate up to 20 BPM over what the chest strap was reporting. But I could tell from how I felt the chest strap was accurate and the watch wasn’t. I found putting the wrist strap very very tight helped a bit but it was still off on more strenuous workouts like track run, or tempo runs. So I always use the chest strap myself, it’s a worthwhile investment if you’re focusing on running at certain heart rate zones.

i though systolic is first beat and diastolic is last beat.. but in the last part you said that diastolic is second beat?
Few inaccuracies give this a thumbs down. It sounds like he keeps calling the Bp cuff a “cusp”? Also he holds his fingers on top of the bell when he is listening that is a bad havit hold the sides instead. I am also confused by why he keeps saying “the stethoscope is turned off” and to twist it. There is no off or on ot twists for bell or diaphragm. That is a big error to say as its basic functionality of the instrument.

My firsts measurement is always higher than the next two or three. I don’t know why, but because in the doctor’s office they only take ONE measurement, as opposed to taking the average of three measurements for example. So if the doctor prescribes after one measurement, you may be taking medicine you DON’T need.

Try to make test on lower temperature. All HRMsfrom watches are useless, only from the chest has reliable data.

I am not a doctor but have gave a thumbs up due to the subject and the points being made, many of which I know already and I’ve said many times doctors are not doing it correctly. I have a home device but never used it yet. My elderly mum(the reason I bought it) is on blood pressure meds. She suffers white coat syndrome too. My brother in-law was ready to be put on meds for it. He convinced the Dr to wait while he got it down naturally and he did. The Dr was a bit surprised but no meds needed. Loved my wahoo HR monitor for the 4 years I used it. Sometimes it struggles to upload offline workouts. But otherwise it was great. Today it stopped sensing my HR, so I may need to replace it.

I have found the Apple Watch series 4 HR monitor tracks perfect with my Wahoo TICKR Fit for cycling. Unfortunately the Apple Watch has no support for Garmin Edge or Wahoo Element units. I can however use the Apple Watch with Zwift just fine.

Too much chocolate or magnesium could make you too lethargic from causing your blood pressure to go too low. I know because I was feeding my husband to much organic baking cocoa that I blended with our green organic stevia in the raw organic milk I blended in the blender n sometimes bananas too and in the date balls I food processed, LOL I don’t make them as much and I add chia seeds to both recipes if we have them during the day.
For a stress reliever and treat I mix a bit of raw organic milk with organic frozen blueberries with organic chia seeds and organic vanilla extract for a food processed yummy organic ice cream. Organic half n half or heavy whipping cream will do but it’s not as healthy at all because it’s pasteurized.

I use a garmin 735xt. I own a garmin chest strap but don’t bother using it due to the inconvenience factor of using an additional chest strap.

Great timing on this video!!! I use a Garmin Fenix 5x and wear the Wahoo TickrX HR strap and I’m glad to see it is not just my watch. I forgot my HRM on 1 run in the past and was baffled at how high my HR was. Today, I ran the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon (1 mile distance) with my 6 year old daughter and decided to not wear my TickrX and just rely on the Fenix5x. Well after the run, which we ran in 14:38, It showed my max HR at 165 which was ridiculous. Hopefully in the future watches these issues can be resolved, if possible.

Changing to a macrobiotic/vegan/raw vegan/fruitarian diet, I have reduced my blood pressure to normal range of 120/80. No more than 1000mg of sodium daily. I’m an 59 and take no medications. My parents took high blood pressure medications for 40 years. They ate the Standard American Diet and were not overweight. My father smoked 1 cigarette a day after dinner. My mother did not smoke. I was a caregiver to them until their deaths. I decided to CHANGE my diet rather than face decades of medication.
The assertion that the Wahoo TICKR has BOTH Bluetooth 4.0 and also ANT+ is not correct. I bought a Wahoo TICKR and it does not broadcast ANT+ unless you buy another device called a “Wahoo Key,” which costs about $50. The “Wahoo Key” has to plug in to the old-style, 30 pin connector on an iPhone. I have a newer iPhone with a Lightning connector, so it was impossible for me to get anything other than a Bluetooth 4.0 signal from the Wahoo TICKR. I needed BOTH Bluetooth (for iPhone) and also ANT+ (for the exercise machine’s display). I returned it because it was worthless for my purposes without ANT+. I know this video review is for the Wahoo TICKR X and not the Wahoo TICKR (without the X) but the only difference between TICKR and TICKR X is that the X model has memory and measures running dynamics.

I just bought Garmin Forerunner 35. HRM is absolute joke, it makes up result in software based on exercise you are doing! I had it on my hand and moved it up and down to simulate exercise HR went up steadily up to 130 bpm. Then I stopped moving my hand it went down steadily (as I were resting). My actual HR was 75 bpm all the time! I can’t believe it, it’s ridiculous.

I have a stock chest strap for Garmin 920, and it is quite inaccurate. Especially when it is 10-15 C or colder. For example, today it showed 160 in the warmup for 2 K (140-145 should be real HR), then suddenly dropped to actual 140-145, then on 4K intervals, smth like 162 with a sudden jump to 170 at the last km (the tempo was steady, no speedup and I was not breaking up). Sometimes it shows 160 when I have 130 by hand counting actual beats per 10 sec. Also seen glitches on the bike, like doing tempo ride on 160 HR and then it jumps to 180 for 10-20 mins and then jumps back (180 is well above my FTP HR so definitely not possible). Changing batteries does not help, as well as moistening it. And also the Garmin Vector PM has a lot of random glitches. The Garmin 920 itself often shows 2.00 for 500m when I run steady 4.50-5.00 per km. Or the track goes through the houses 100 m away from actual road all of this is quite random and rarely happens in the open (no buildings around). I found those gadgets to be very unreliable, you lose so much time buying them and writing complaints but most of the time they are still glitchy. And I looking at Strava of my friend athletes I see nearly all of them have the same problems with HR straps and powermeters.

I check my BP daily manually, it’s been years I am doing it. To my surprise, this morning my BP was 83/135. How can it be? I checked my BP 3 times, same result, the top number was much lower than the bottom number. How can this be? I am worried.

I literally came here because I was just curious on how to read blood pressure, I’m not a doctor, nurse or in any medical field whatsoever and yet this was so easy to understand. You explained everything so clearly.

All or most tablets are liver toxic to the best of my knowledge.
I use an apple watch and have noticed that unless I tighten the strap it’s wildly inconsistent, however with the strap tight it seems ok. Although I don’t compare it with anything else, a sense check with RPE tells me that it’s not far off I think. The learning is for apple watch you need to tighten the strap for your run; I have 2 settings, one for normal wear and a tighter one for exercise. I’d imagine that’s also the same for any wrist based HR monitor as the top of the wrist frankly isn’t a great place to be taking pulse rates from.
I could see that you wear your watch on the wrist. I think that garmin advise to wear it above the wrist, it could make a huge difference in accuracy due to not moving or trying to take reading on the bony part of your wrist.
Early after diagnosis my IM doc stated they (medical field) did not know what caused high BP, after accounting for usual dietary causes. It does exist ancestrally in my family. Then I was put on beta blockers which over a decade caused sexual dysfunction, and a huge range of side-effects the worst being depression and mood swings. Thiazides never helped BP readings and usually had other deleterious side effects. Losartin didn’t work, especially Lisinopril, Amlodipine. It was impossible for my pressure to consistently stay below 130 sys. Every doc that tried got frustrated and my drug budget got heavily abused. As an aside, all blood factors have almost always been within prevailing guideline limits.
Over time I began to recognize the slight discomfort symptoms as an early indicator of high pressure. This I use rather than daily tracking of the machine as my barometer. Now I can usually estimate what the reading will be just by feel, which most of the time proves correct. The best way I have discovered to reduce exceptionally high pressure is moderate physical exertion for at least an hour to release anxiety. I would like nothing better than to find a natural method of getting off the rocket fuel, but so far it has been unsuccessful.

But this is the less than perfect solution. Because breathing through mouth is detrimental to your health as well: it’s bad hygiene and more importantly, it will gradually change the shape of your jaw. Why not just do the professional sleep test and order a surgery to cut the necessary parts off?
Thanks for this. I use the Garmin Tri HRM. It seems to be accurate but I haven’t compared. Sometimes it has trouble syncing with 910 (yes I checked battery) but I have to reset battery in order to sync (sometimes). I never wear it in pool cus I honestly don’t believe it is waterproof.

it looks like your deadlifting more with your back than legs. When your getting the weight up from the ground your using your back to lift and “pull” up the weight, your not using your legs to “push” up the weight first, this is very important to reduce risk of back injury/pain, and will help your deadlifts as well.

I use my FitBit for my HR. I want to get a chest strap for more accuracy and to link to more devices/apps, but am strapped for cash and my HR isn’t important enough to spend the money on right now.
While I use a chest strap now, wrist monitors can be very accurate. The caveat is that these sensors require firm contact with the skin, and have other limitations due to being optical. I’ve found that for best results, you really have to wear the device pretty tightly. What also helps is wearing the sensor on the palm side of your wrist.

I am using Garmin HRM tri and Garmin HRM run dual (because it has bluetooth and makes it easy for zwift). Both are very accurate. My watch is the Garmin Fenix 3 since 3.5 years. I do agree with you that chest straps are the best

What’s the best HR monitor chest strap? I do interval exercises and my vivosmart hr isn’t fast enough to catch the jumps to 195bpm in real time. I have years of data with garmin so I’d like to stick with it, but trying to stay on a budget a little bit.

Some feedback, albeit a bit late,
Firstly great job on the video. Really simple, great for allied health workers who are taking routine blood pressure.
But, my first concern is with how you check your stethoscope, if you are tapping it, you either have a shit stethoscope which is unreliable for BP or shit ears, in either case, go automated (or get a better stethascope). A gentle slide of fingers over the stethoscope is all that is required, if you can’t hear that, bin the stethoscope and get a new one as you won’t hear the lower aspects of blood pressure properly and will document a diastolic higher than it actually is.
The other issue is, I guarantee you a deaf person can hear tapping on a stethoscope (not really, but you get the point).
Secondly, you should really be using both arms for blood pressure. You talk of consistency but have none. There are a number of cases, conditions and complications that can cause inconsistent blood pressure between your left and right arm, this is why BP is an important diagnostic factor. But, this is my being a little pedantic as I am always dealing with emergencies, a routine case you can probably afford to be a bit slacker.
Third issue is with your 200mmHg cut off, always listen to the beats until you can’t hear them, then back off the pressure. What if your patient is having a hypertensive crisis and you missed it because you started at 200mmHg, dropped it off and took their Systolic as 180mmHg or however far it dropped?
Fourth issue, that stethoscope is self supporting and you are reading the gauge rather than listening. We have stethoscopes for a reason, I don’t even gauge read on a critical patient.
Ultimately, like I said, great video for routine work, but some things could be improved on. I would also elaborate on ensuring the patient had their normal blood pressure instead of 120/80.
For instance, a CHF patient with 120/80 NIBP, probably not a great sign depending on circumstance.

Mostly my blood pressure is alright…but wake up at around 3 am with the damn blood pressure high and my heart racing…and needing to run to the bathroom to pee every 20 minutes?

Garmin recommends that you wear the watch fairly tight, and higher up on the wrist.(to keep the sensor in constant contact with skin) I had problems with mine until I figured out the fit. It is much more reliable now that I put it on as recommended. Might be worth a try. My (older )polar chest strap monitor was a piece of garbage. It regularly doubled my heart rate, and was generally unreliable. Have had issues with the garmin chest strap as well, most likely due to static issues, but those are much less common now that it’s not winter.
If you’re overweight, lose it. A low carb diet (keto) reslly works to lower BP.. Buy a BP meter. Stay away from alcohol. Avoid meds. They destroy your body as they have significant side effects and make you susceptible to other diseases.

Great info! Thank you! Doctor tried to subscribe BP medication during an initial without really knowing me as a patient. I had to rush to get to his office after a stressful day. To top it off, I was nervous about meeting a doctor for the first time. Naturally my blood pressure was elevated when the nurse took my vitals. After sitting in the exam room for 10-15 minutes, the doctor walks in, greets himself and after scanning my chart, asked if my blood pressure is always so high. I explained what kind of day I had and that I was not interested in any medication as blood pressure is not always at the same and constant levels. He did check my BP before leaving his office and it was below normal. Don’t jump on the medication bandwagon! You can control BP naturally yourself. There are also natural herbs to help with controlling BP if needed. Eating a diet rich in dark raw leafy vegetables (8-10 cups) will also help. Lots of green veggies, low carb, with light to moderate protein. Drinking hibiscus tea as well as getting enough sleep and periods of rest during the day is also helpful.

Everything affects us in some way, diet, exercise, emotions. My BP, it goes from 110 /70 to 130/80. I got told by my doc….you need BP pills NOW, prescription was done before I could say no thanks! Those pills dehydrate you and you lose more minerals, so I did a lot of research and discovered my Magnesium and potassium were low, so I take apple cider vinegar with cream of tartar with honey in orange juice once a day and eat more baked potatoe, greens and avocado with pink salt.
I month later I presented myself at the docs, she was shocked, I showed her my readings from my own machine, and she actually listened to how I did it.
It is averaging 115/75 now, even better during the warmer weather.

Studies have shown variability and even unacceptable accuracy in HR monitors, not all are created equal. I had a Fitbit Alta Hr for 3ish years and I found that more accurate than my galaxy watch. I don’t know why the galaxy watch is so off. At least the Fitbit showed me closer to the effort I felt I was putting in. For soccer watches probably are not good for. I did soccer for pretty much for the whole summer and my heart rate was very high (Fitbit). But now with my Galaxy watch doesn’t show it going as high as it did on my Fitbit. I don’t think I can test either

I’ve never had a problem with it’s accuracy and I do know with wrist hrm how you wear it is extremely important and I noticed you just lifted the side of the watch to show the lights, well if that’s the way you wear it then absolutely it’s inaccurate on the run, on the run the strap must be tight and should not be able to lift, shift or rotate it
Watches take a while to get use to for this very reason and mine has been as accurate as my doctors hrm

What’s up with “2017” in the title and published 2015?? That’s disappointing and misleading. Anyhow, the tickr x doesn’t work well with the iPhone and Apple Watch series 1. For example, sometimes it take about 5 minutes and closing/opening the app to 10 times to connect. Same goes for when you’re trying to connect to the Apple Watch without your phone.
it all depends on the firmness of the cuff that’s why leaving the cuff on gives you the better readings over all average.
I totally agree with your assessment of the watch at times it’s had me in hi zone 3 when I am walking! Chest strap is much more accurate (and for garmin devices, you cant get changes in lactate threshold information from the watch).
Ya don’t get Polar heart rate equipment, I wasted lot off money on their products for the past maybe 15 years, really shitty customer services, oh ya Iast one i had is the Polar H7, used it less than hundred hours, need I say more, I should take pics and post all my dead Polar stuff.

You say that in your study the “drugs won hands down”. I am very surprised and wonder how you were trying to “manage” those 300 patients. I’ll give you my own example. My cardiologist put me on medications for high bp, high pulse rate and high cholesterol two years ago. I didn’t want to remain on any medication. I changed my diet (low carb) and lost 12 kg weight. My bp is normal (120-125/75-80), my resting heart rate is around 65-70 and cholesterol is within limits. Today I am 58 yrs old. If I can do it with a little study on the Internet, you are an accomplished doctor. By the way many doctors baulk at the idea of artificially lowering the blood pressure. High blood pressure is not the disease. It is a symptom of our heart trying to cope up with inadequate blood supply to the organs, thereby necessitating a higher pressure!

His nutrition guidelines are all wrong. Only thing I can say is the commercial made foods are bad. keto diet will reduce your BP within 30 days. Statin drugs are sold by the Billions of dollars. The risks outway the benefits if you look at all the complications from them. I told my father (had a defib pacemaker) not to take statins. he lived to 91.9 yrs old.

Checking your blood pressure at home might make the difference in calling for help. Occasionally, is good but if you start feeling antsy, aggravated, chills, and or stuffy with very annoying slightly growing chest pain having a home monitor to check may mean the difference between waiting it out, or calling for help… The other option was okay this has been ongoing off and on and if I just sit down and take it easy it should go away. Okay maybe that option was somewhat foolish, but for someone who had no family Dr and worthless insurance well, it worked in the past, but slap the home monitor on and seeing those ridiculously high numbers when you are used to seeing normal numbers guarantees that mom is calling the ambulance regardless.

Let me start by saying that I love your material, passion and the care you have for us Traniacs shines through everything you do. This video, however, should have been scrapped. Please know that I understand what it takes to put yourself out there only to be criticized. This comment is meant with love and respect for all your other delightful work. So here goes: If your Garmin didn’t save the workout, then wait another week and do a proper test. If the Polar HRM is the gold-standard, then use it. I believe there’s a place for non-scientific comparison videos like this, but there has to be a minimal standard that can be easily achieved here. The ride showed the right result: Strap HRMs are good enough for 95% of us. I bet that the run would show the same result, only that two different runs a week apart are two different runs, even if you run the same exact course. This is a great subject for a video and we’re coming up on the one year anniversary, so redo! <3

It might be a good idea doctor (even the word doctor gives me the shivers lately) to tell the truth to your people. You may be poorer in pocket, but you’ll be rich in your own and everybody else’s well being. By the way another word that gives me the shivers is EXPERT. There seems to be more and more of these specie appearing on the planet. High blood pressure may be treated naturally, and with the right diet and life style, short term treatment is mostly sufficient.

Meds treat symptoms not causes. Diet is the most powerful medicine. Fructose increases uric acid which inhibits nitrous oxide which is a vasodilator. i.e. the lack of it causes your veins and arteries to contract and push your blood pressure up.

Fenix 5s plus here with tri hr strap. When not using the strap (empty on holiday) I notice that the wrist position is hugely important for accurate readings. In some cases my HR seemed to drop to the 90-100 range when climbing over 1000m vertical/hr. This changed to my normal 160ish HR when I put my hands on the handlebars in stead of on the hoods.
When I was 340 pounds I use to snore so loud it was disgusting and everyone hated being around me when I was asleep. I lost 150
Pounds and my snoring went away.

Polar is best for heart rate. Garmin watches have a better setup and GPS. BUT you can use a Polar cheststrap with a Garmin I think. So do that.

I was diagnosed with hypertension in 2007. I survived two strikes: one in 2012 and recently in 2020. I know I’m blessed to still be alive but I still struggle with my blood pressure going up and down when measured by my doctor. I still don’t fully understand that but oh well. The crazy thing is that I take two blood pressure meds and a med to stop blood clots. I don’t know how helpful those blood pressure meds work because I kept my BP low the first three and half years and all of sudden, Boom. My body had adapted to the two BP meds. It stayed high for eight years until I had this recent stroke possibly due to a blood clot. Although my BP is still higher than what the doctor wants it to be, they said I should feel better due to my blood levels staying at a much safer level..
Falling down for older people especially is a really bad side effect……

My mother had high blood pressure but, though no longer young, mine errs on the low side. I got a bit worried it might get too low, so I stopped so much physical activity. I had no idea I was doing so much and it was causing it. My same aged peers avoided me because they claimed just the sight of me walking for miles, gardening gor 6 hours straight etc, which is nothing yo me, simply exhausted them to even just watch me. I am pleased to say, that, with less activity, due to Covid restrictions in Australia, though frustrating,my blood pressure is now gradually getting to a better, more normal, higher level. So, activity seems to affect it. If you want to get it down, it seems that moving more might help you. But, I was warned about not trying to change your blood pressure overnight eg by embarking on some fanatical, sudden, extreme fitness campaign. Just build up to it slowly and get doctor’s OK before starting. In blood pressure issues can be dangerous. Either too high or too low. But too high seems to be the worst side to err on.

geen HR watch sensor is science fiction. no matter if you have Amazfit bip or a 3000$ garmin. do this test and you will see how stupid are those green fakes: 1.start gps walk or run. 2. go to a 200+ sters place. 3. walk up the sters. 4. test you HR by finger and a stop watch (the only real HR). i’ll be more than happy to discover a true good accurate HR watch.
