The Drawbacks of Using BMI The BMI formula is so simple, it’s easy to use by just about everyone. However, it’s that simplicity that makes it inaccurate because it only takes into account your height and weight. Whether you’re overweight or not requires much.BMI’s Drawbacks Your BMI doesn’t reveal anything about the makeup of your body, such as how much muscle vs. fat you have.
That’s why conclusions based only on this number can be misleadin.BMI and health If a person has a high BMI, they are likely to have a high proportion of body fat, especially if their BMI falls in the obesity category. However, it is possible to be “overweight”.
Drawbacks to using BMI for measuring health. 1. BMI was never created for or meant to be used on individuals. It was originally created in the 19th century by a 2. BMI is only concerned with height and weight.
It doesn’t factor in muscle mass, hydration status or bone density, and 3. BMI.BMI Mistakes Muscle for Fat. BMI uses your weight in the formula but doesn’t distinguish if that weight comes from an abundance of fat or from lean tissue. Athletes and gym enthusiasts who carry a great deal of muscle may seem heavy for their height or overall siz.A BMI outside the “normal” range (18.5-25) is considered less healthy, and an indicator of greater health risks.
While the BMI has countless failings as a reliable tool, racism is chief among them, said Sabrina Strings, an assistant professor at the University of California, Irvine.Drawbacks of BMI While BMI can estimate whether a person’s weight is moderate, it has some limitations. While it correlates with body fat levels, BMI.
These policies of using the BMI to determine health cause BMI to be used to say I have a preexisting condition. I was turned down for health insurance before the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Life insurance companies are charging me more for life insurance because I was considered unhealthy. Once again, this is an example of the “Black Tax.
Disadvantages of BMI Testing Your body weight includes a number of components, such as muscle mass, fat, internal organs, water and skeletal weight. BMI does not differentiate between these. For example, excess abdominal fat that pushes your waistline to larger than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men ups your risk of obesity-related diseases, according to the National Institutes of Health, regardless of your BMI.
The middle range brings out one of the main problems with using BMI as a standard definition of health: it is only based on weight and height. Lopez-Jimenez said many things factor into a person’s weight, like muscle mass, bones, fat and water, and that can mean two people with the same BMI have vastly different body types and health levels. The clinical limitations of BMI should be considered.
BMI is a surrogate measure of body fatness because it is a measure of excess weight rather than excess body fat. Factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass can influence the relationship between BMI and body fat.A person is considered underweight if the BMI is less than 18.5. As with most measures of health, BMI is not a perfect test.
For example, results can be thrown off by pregnancy or high muscle mass, and it may not be a good measure of health for children. The problem stems from the fact that BMI is an inaccurate measure of health, Ahima said. For one thing, BMI doesn’t take into account fat, and it doesn’t indicate where fat is distributed on the.
Unfortunately, such is the case with the Body Mass Index (BMI), a weight-to-height ratio used by health care providers, insurance companies and the scientific community. There is growing criticism for the use of BMI. For example, it doesn’t take body composition (fat versus muscle) into account, and a person’s weight doesn’t correlate.

Thank you for this Video.

Social media, big corporations with their processed and artificial foods, the slick advertising purchased by these corporations, upbringing, and the corrosive media, would cover 75 percent of the issue.
It’s not the BMI, it’s the milk and eggs that you eat every day that is going to stop your heart one day, it’s very high in cholesterol and these guys are programed to mislead people about the stupid BMI crap, I am 1.96m tall, 36yo 160kg weight and I can still satisfy my wife in bed, I don’t suffer from hypertension or diabetes and I’m very active, my heart is fine because I don’t eat those to poisonous foods, thank me later.
So in other words NO the BMI is not accurate and is basically useless. Got it.
BMI ignores body composition.
Fail.
It’s not fucking rocket-science, is it.
Case closed.
Momentum=mass X velocity. If you don’t have enough mass, you will not be able to perform as well in certain sports. That’s just a fact. If I were at my “ideal” BMI, then I wouldn’t be able to throw an opponent in judo, for example. Pure muscle and bone like Michael Phelps is very rare. BMI makes everyone feel like a failure.
So many of these are inaccurate. I’m losing my faith in people called “doctors.” The real summary is that your BMI means nothing unless your percent body fat matches the exact number of the underlying assumptions in the calculation that is over 100 years old and was never meant to apply to individuals, only to populations. The ratio of waist to hips has application to how you carry your weight and can affect things like your potential to acquire diabetes or similar disorder but not hear disease. What’s important is to have a percent body fat, which is based on your body density (including bone, muscle and fat density) relative to your age and sex. Older people naturally carry more fat, and that’s healthy.
hmm…if the doctor has your body fat percentage why did he even check the bmi? i know it was a skit but still….
I’m at a reasonable weight and I’m a pretty healthy person but my bmi is 17. It doesn’t make sense
If an intractable pain patient like myself can maintain their weight with simple diet change and modified workout nearly anyone can do it.
its total bs, im 6 foot and built like a truck, I’m 190 lbs. Not ripped, but i dont got a big belly.
BMI rubbish. I am size small and at 58kgs it says that i am obese and that i should ideally weigh 35kgs.
I can see this being the case cause I weight 189 and I’m 5’11, but I workout almost every day. I’m like 26 to 27 on the BMI chart.
You are wrong. Taller people can not have a bigger waist.
Overweight Versus Obese
I want to make sure we
understand the difference between being overweight and being obese. Place a
tape measure around your waist just above the belly button.
·
Men
o Ideal waist measurement,
31-36 inches
o Overweight, 37-40 inches
o Obesity, 41 inches and
over
·
Women
o Ideal waist measurement,
28-33 inches
o Overweight, 34-37 inches
o Obesity, 38 inches and
over
BMI is not for weight lifters or athletes, it’s more meant for your average person who doesn’t really workout. and even then it is just a general guide line.
Long data?? Just like pharma,,, tested for 8wks. Not a lifetime
This is smart and adds some common sense but I worked with a man from S. America, who was shaped like a football, his waste was probably close to his height, he was solid muscle, he just had some different genes than we are used to around here, so I would not even worry about this indicator, you have to look at the whole picture.
I went to a doctor and he gave me a stress test, he said, you cardiovascular results are so good, that I would not tell you to stop smoking if you smoked moderately, and I was morbidly obese at the time according to the BMI. I have a good doctor now, he is all about diet and exercise and does not push pills, he is about 30 years old, perhaps the younger generation are better educated. Peace
I’m officially reached my own limit point with obesity what I am able to tolerate any more hit the salad bar boy I don’t agree that you can’t do whatever you need to with it but you don’t have to overdo anything either I mean people change their routines all the time anyways just as obesity is long-term and you’re still going to have to deal with it anyways
How. On Earth. Can you release such a worthless, repetitious, frozen in time production? These 3 people are NOT doctors. Rather, they’re experts in palliative care. Like 90% of the medical community they make their living cutting, plugging, and patching people with terrible lifestyles. The fact that they could conduct this “boy things are really getting bad out there” type podcast SCREAMS “Boy, things are really getting good in here.”
I’m 12, 5’8 and weigh 186..I dont have any belly fat rly.. No muscles rly either..but im still overweight by 28 pounds.. I look skinny and healthy and im so confused of how im over weight because I srsly dont even have a big stomach..
i found this video through searching for Dr. Donald Hensrud, after having seen his Mayo diet course from the The Teaching Company’s Great Courses. I also live in Sweden so i find it very interesting to compare my observations from “our” culture, differences and such. the USA is often a indicator of what happens here later on.
Interestingly how BMI is plain wrong exactly from pure mathematical perspective: if you take anything and want to make the same thing (in all proportions) but double in height, you will need 8 times more material, what will make the resulting proportional copy weight 8 times more. For example, if you have 1 cm height and 1 kg weight cube (which has 1/1²) and want to proportionally double it in size (in our 3-dimensional space), you will need to “build” a bigger cube consisting of 8 original cubes: proper formula would be 8/2³.
My fat is half the weight of my muscle and I’m kinda holo boned which means my bones are lighter than they supposed to be and I’m 160 pounds:/
No matter what food companies do, they can’t do much with industrial agriculture. Why do we use corn syrup in everything? Because we cash crop corn, soybeans, and other mega yield grains to the detriment of other foods. We create an overabundance that we then have to feed to our livestock that pushes their fatty acid composition over the cliff. This creates a vicious cycle where the only ingredients that exist are fatty and sugary, that creates an addictive product that drives up demand for corn syrup and other processed ingredients.
If you like a heart related story it could save someones life. The widow maker all most got me.
I understand weight and weight loss better than just about anybody. I have been studying this and learning about this my whole life.
First of all, if you ask the average person, they will tell you that the reason we have so many fat people is that people have gotten fat because they are lazy and eat too much due to character flaws.
This is NOT the case.
Obesity is mainly due to the effects of fructose in the diet.
This is the truth.
The reason most people believe what they believe is because of government recommendations and institutional pushback to real science.
Most people believe that dietary animal fat causes heart disease. This is because a doctor back in the 1950’s named Ancel Keys convinced us with bad science and without proof that saturated fats was the cause of heart disease.
In the 1970’s, a congressional committee chaired by Senator George McGovern recommended than Americans reduce the amount of fat in the diet.
To make a long story short, since fat was demonized, food manufacturers started to add sugar and the newly invented high fructose corn syrup into foods to replace the flavor that was eliminated by the reduction of fat in the foods.
Dr Richard Johnson, author of the book “The Fat Switch” explains that fructose, which is in sugar and HFCS, causes obesity in 2 ways: by blocking the effects of leptin, the hormone which regulates hunger, and by the reduction of ATP at the cellular level which reduces energy in the muscle cell.
In other words, people who eat too much sugar eat more and move less because of the effects of fructose.
The effects of fructose are not only with humans. Animals in nature, believe it or not, use fructose to gain weight also. They eat sweet fruits to gain weight to for hibernation, migration and to survive the winter. Fructose is natures’ way to provide many animal species a way to purposely gain weight to survive.
In other words, fructose is nature’s weight gaining chemical, and no doubt has saved trillions of animals lives over hundreds of millions of years. The problem with people is that we are preparing for a famine which will never come.
Dr Johnson says the reason we are eat too much and are lazy is not because of a character problem, but it is because the fructose makes us eat too much and lazy.
This is the truth about obesity. Reduce your sugar intake to control your weight, but do it before you get too old. Old people usually have a harder time losing weight.
Childhood obesity is rediculous! I’ve always been in excellent shape because I’ve been doing sports since I was 4 and I don’t overeat, as a pre med I do understand that being overweight can be a genetic factor. But that doesn’t mean you can’t change that! If you’re gaining weight than exercise and watch what you eat!
It’s even more BS this waist thing, people sometimes get bloated and sometimes wake up flat do when do we take the readings
BMI can mislead in more than 20% of people. If you are very muscular, very tall or very short, your BMI isn’t a good representation of your health. Much better is the Waist/Height ratio. Measure your waist at the belly-button and divide this number by your height (you can use inches or cm, but be consistent). If this number is greater than 0.5 then you’ve got work to do…
I started IF 3 months ago. It truly is amazing. I am on a daily 16:8 fast, sometimes it goes on to 17 hours of fasting but on sunday’s I work around my house so I skip breakfast and make it a 20:4 fast. It works well, I do Calisthenics 3 times per week and walk around 4km per day. I have never been this healthy, I have energy and my mental state has improved quite a bit. I only drink water and lactose-free milk
I am diagnosed with Clinical Depression, Social Anxiety Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It has taken off the edge and makes me feel good because I have stuck to this for so long. I fear being unhealthy so I go out of my way to stay healthy.
Pills..are never the answer..period. Big pharmaceutical companies are..well..not good for humans.
It’s called discipline. 48 hrs fasts. Key tone strips. Instant results. Refeed education. Beat addictions. Quality refeeds
Not very. I’m 153 cm so for me to be 18 BMI I would need to weigh 27 Kg LOL I’d be dead at that. I’m currently 48 Kg
