This is the gear that I wore and brought with me for my second marathon! wish I would have had more information on what to wear the first time around as this worked 10x better this time!!!Generally speaking, runners who have performance in mind aim to wear the most minimal outfit possible at any given temperature, says Mike Thomson, a certified running coach at Fast & Fit Coaching in Chicago. For temperatures between about 40 and 60 degrees, many will choose shorts and a sleeveless shirt, often called a singlet. If you’re ever tempted to walk a marathon read this first.
It all started well, it was a nice morning and we got to the start line at around 8:55 so we had about 15 minutes to spare, and it was a lovely day, blue skies and no rain but just a little chilly.

Sound advice and there’s no shame in turning back if conditions are threatening. ATB.
You sound half like an Ozzy and you’re wearin’ an Ozzy hat?
Where are you from?
Yes! I’ve missed this while I was out of town. I feel like I’ve accomplished something today.

Hey, this was really fun and challenging, progressing my speed! Yay! ♀️
I know I’m way late to this, but on the Jetboil why not just eat out of the pot instead of bringing the bowl? I really enjoyed your trek video! Added this one to my bucket list.
Great video, no poles? I hope it went well out there and you made some great memories. Thanks for the video.
I did this stackable on the stair machine; thanks for the motivation!
Just one point about flipping the batteries around in the headtorch to stop it accidentally turning on. Be careful as some headtorches, especially ones with 18650 rechargeable cells have the batteries connected in parallel. If you flipped one of those around they would short each other out with spectacular results including fire!
The easy way to tell is to remove one battery if the torch still works on the remaining battery DO NOT flip one of the batteries.
Oh my goodness; I can’t believe I just did that without stopping. It may seem small, but I am NOT a runner and generally speaking, do not like to run/walk/jog. I feel so amazing about myself right now and feel like I could have actually kept going. Thank you for this format. You rock!
Great video as always. Just to follow up on what you said about blisters… I recommend you try Leukotape. I use it as a preventative, to tape over areas where i’m prone to blisters. It’s amazing stuff and, trust me, it stays stuck on! I used it on the West Highland Way and Cumbria Way and it was great. No blisters! It comes in a thick roll but you can cut it into strips and stick it to label-backing paper which makes it (and any other tape) much easier to work with. Just wanted to pass on the tip. Best of luck for the walk. And thanks for making such good videos!
I’m currently prepping to do the C2C in September. I’ll be wildcamping/campsite/b&b’ing so I’ll only be taking 24 hours worth of food with me. I’ll restock as I eat it along the way.
I did the Great Glen Way last October I packrafted the first bit up to Loch Ness & hiked the rest (sent the packraft home in the mail!). It’s definitely worth getting the trail passport as it gives you access to showers/water etc at each of the Locks along the Canal and access to the chemical toilets (the cleanest I’ve ever seen/smelt!) at the designated wild camping spots. It’s a fantastic trip!
What no Brexit survival kit? I usually pack a dozen tins of baked beans and extra ammo in case it all kicks off!
What a great way to learn how to build speed and endurance! I enjoyed this so much that I did it twice, then added the 1-mile continual run as a finisher:).
Off to do the coast to coast in three weeks, any advice?
This will be my first long distant hike
Hey! I’m Hannah.I did -35 lbs in 30 days.Go to hddiet.gs\#uy4p
Paired this with one of your 10-min. strength sessions. I’m not a runner, so I did start going too fast too soon; I appreciated u reminding us that we can slow down a bit if needed. Thank u! P.S. I like how u explained that jogging might stand for ‘gentle running”!
Hi Abbie. Great video. Good luck with the walk. I’m just getting ready to hit the west highland way at the end of August so will definitely take some advice from your packing strategy!
Abbie, I’d love to have done this
But don’t want to do it on my own. Wish I could have joined you.
I am guessing that you camped out instead of a B and B, hostel, or hotel?
One main thing you are missing.Baby wipes.I always have them with me.When you stop or no shower.Good to give a wipe in those inportant places.feet crutch pits and neck area.and of course small plastic bags for rubbish.
Good video Abbie. Have you thought of dehydrating your own food and then packing it in small ziplock freezer bags? Less weight and less space? I can dehydrate chilli for 2 people and it packs into a freezer bag which folds down to 18cm x 6 cm?
Hey I enjoyed this video. I love watching pack load outs eve though they are very personal. I’m looking to do the coast to coast next year just camping and would love to know what the cost of camping is in total for you if you don’t mind sharing that information?
Babies can you please tell me whether the Wainwright’s coast to coast is rid able by moutain bike?
Do they make your travel book (not the map) in an electonic version for your phone. I used to carry around a first aid book, but now I am going to look for an electonic one to cut down on weight.
A GREAT VIDEO Abbie very inspiring and it does make me feel like I should get out more. I always feel recharged and energised when I get out, any problems that build up in your head over time fade totally into insignificance. Good Luck
Dixie at Homemade Wonderlust has sparked the hiking/bagpacking bug in me (love her channel) so I am so excited to find your channel as you are in the UK. I live in Yorkshire so plenty of hiking to be done here! Would love to do the Coast to Coast one day
are you putting a vid up of the walk Abbie, would love to see it, ATB kaizer
Abbie, best of luck with your C2C. We have just started to plan ours for 2019.
Have you thought about digitalising the guide, a PDF on a phone works well and there are apps that allow you to add stickie notes?
(Appreciate that a hard copy is great to use at home)
I’ve been working to keep my Exos 48 under 6kg + food so would be interested in your follow up report.
Did the Cumbria way beginning of June. Since that had the post trail blues, i need to be back out there. Done days in the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District since but just not there . Found your vid very useful for the CW. Coast to coasts been the one ticking away in the back of my head. Thanks for sharing. Good luck and enjoy yourself
You might want to look into “Slow jogging: you can actually get into marathon shape doing it, without any wear a tare on your legs. Conceived by a Japanese guy. He called it Niko Niko which means smile. If you can’t still smile while you are doing it, you are doing it to hard. Really Pahla have a look into it here on youtube too.
A Zpacks Duplex in Camo would take bout 3/4 or 1kg of your pack weight
But that Hilleberg Akto is worth carrying an extra kg.
Abbie that was a very cool video you have given me some ideas..I take it that you do some hand washing when you get the chance?
Just in from a short hike and want to reiterate what you said…EVERY gram matters! Lol
You should try mole skin for blister that stuff never comes off
Very useful video:-) I myself have walked some miles of and will continue walking the South West Coastal Path in parts for a while. I have scanned the actual maps of Trailblazer, and printed them out in 13 by 18 cm size. Then I have laminated them two and two back to back, made a hole in the corner and keep the actual daily maps on a carabine hook. Good to go for any kind of weather, and probably lighter than the book. At least for our sections of this path:-)
Just found your videos. Brilliant and well done. Although, I wouldn’t like to carry a full pack + camera gear. You have given me confidence with pack weight about the same as mine 15K. That’s a similar weight that I will be carrying next week on the CWT. That includes my camera. LOL
Chia charge bars? Did you say they were a sponsor? Perhaps a closeup of the bar and some details about the flavours.
I was so pleased to see this post as its a trail on my list. I am heading to Kent, UK on Wednesday for a month from Canada so I will have to catch up when I get back.
This workout was the 2nd of my 4 stacks goal tonight. I pick this workout as my second stack because I slowly challenge my body to pick up speed with each minute and act as a bridge for the next 2 stacks.
Love your enthusiasm & humour.
Avoid cotton clothing in the outdoors worsens hypothermia.
For your feet, look into gewhol foot cream, fab stuff.
Use walking sticks to help your knees.
Nice vid Abbie. I used the same guide when planning my short walk from Keld to Reeth last year. I managed to loose the path for a short time in spite of it but miraculously found myself standing on it again. The Swale valley was great.
Here in Arkansas where it can get incredibly hot I’ve found it useful to swap socks every couple of hours and let the damp ones dry on the outside of my pack. Body Glide is also good to put on your feet to help prevent blisters.
Hope you had a good walk and thanks for sharing all the pics on FB.
Tip: re-pack the meals into FREEZER ziplock bags you can still pour boiling water in them and then put them into your empty pot and eat right out of the bag. Saves weight on packaging (and then trash) and also doesn’t make a mess of your pot. Then maybe you only need one pot/cup rather than 3. Hope you enjoy your trip!
Thank you for sharing, your videos inspire me to get out and hike on my own. Have you considered some light, open camp shoes or sandals to help with your feet at the end of the day? Good luck with your walk. Enjoy!
Great video (as always). A few random thoughts:
1. I kept my wallet, loose change, tickets, etc., on my person…if I lost my bag or it was stolen, then at least I could still buy things and get home.
2. I did the C2C in September 2014 and used a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo LE tarp tent that weighed about 30 ounces. It performed admirably.
3. Genuine Kinesio Tape is expensive but it sure as night follows days helped with foot maintenance and blister prevention. Put it where you normally get a blister or at the first sign of a hot spot.
4. I used 3 small gas canisters but I did the walk over 19 days. A spare adds weight but is oh so welcome when you run out of gas miles from the nearest supplier.
5. I didn’t take a small gas stove as a spare but I will when I attempt the WHW in September. I got a BRS 3000T off Ebay for less than a tenner and if weighs just over an ounce.
6. I didn’t register that you packed a knife of sorts.
7. What about a small repair kit (for your tent, your inflatable mattress, etc.)?
8. I always carry my waterproofs in one of the outside pockets of my bag. That way I can get at them quickly and without having to take off and open my bag should there be a sudden downpour.
It appears from your reply to Kim Sijder that you are already back. I hope you enjoyed the trail and that you have many, many happy memories. I certainly do. Looking forward to your videos including a gear review / debrief.
I liked this one! I did replace one jogging sequence with side steps, because my hips were hurting.
Did it about 10 years ago. Just about the best thing i’ve ever done. The Steadman guide eas good for shops etc you wont starve just plan ahead a bit. Go careful after Nine Standards it can get REALLY boggy but with recent weather should be OK. Just take your GoPro and leave big camera at home. Have a great time
Great overview on your load out… I honestly can’t get enough of kit list videos it’s my sad guilty pleasure… Anyway, best of luck and look forward to seeing the videos.
My last 3 half marathons been 3:28 I normally never ever run the the cold I don’t enjoy it and it’s sucks in March when I start back running however I want to do a half in November this year there is a race I been wanting to do for a long time but it’s always cold I am scared that it might take me longer bc when I am cold I don’t PR that’s why now I just stop on the winter has anyone took 4 to 6 hours to do a half?
Hi Abbie, great video, I am doing the walk in a couple of weeks, I plan to eat on the way so I am only taking a couple of evening meals as an emmergency ration pack. I have a mixture of camping and b&bs/hotel. I am carrying everything I need. My luxury items are a battery toothbrush and an inflaitable pillow. I as going to use my clothes in a dry bag as a pillow but wimped out. I have bought tooth paste tablets so I can measure out two weeks worth instead of taking a tube of toothpaste, It might be lighter. Anyway enjoy and keep up the good work.
Great video, I wish i’d seen this before i did the Cleveland Way,. i wouldn’t have carried so much…lol
It was nice to meet you at Hooks farm campsite.
Goodness! you can fit a lot of stuff in that small bag! I hope I get as efficient as you are.
The Coast to Coast is at the top of my list. I have researched it and I love reading about it. I plan to walk it in a few years and this video has been very helpful. Looking forward to your Coast to Coast vlogs!
Thanks for the Nice video! I Say skip the extra pants. In sweden I always bring woolen underclothing, like long-Johns, but perhaps thats a bit to much in UK? And be generous with the snacks!
Hi Abbie, are putting up a video of your coast to coast walk?
Enjoy but do not take all the good weather for yourself because we’ll be following you in 2 weeks.:) Have a great and safe time. Seb.
Nice video, why don’t you take your Exos 58 and stick the tent inside the rucksack if you don’t mind me asking?
LOVE IT! I’m a runner too, been running since grade school…it was so nice to run again, thx!:)
Hi Abbie great video I’m very jealous keep safe n have fun.
Love the videos but if I can I’d like to make a well meant constructive comment on this list.
in my opinion you are carrying way too much. We have a habit of packing in order to pander to our fears. Will I be warm enough, will I need spare trousers, gaiters etc, etc. No you don’t need any of those things. It’s red hot and will be for days to come.
My advice is to reassess and would recommend reading Andrew Skurkas thoughts on the subject. If you go for it and really embrace the lightweight method you will not look back. Everything should have more than one use and be able to fight for its place in your pack. If it can’t do that it doesn’t deserve it’s spot in the pack.
Still love your work but I feel your pain and know from experience how easy it is to injure yourself and happily it can so easily be avoided.
Best of luck on the adventure though, it’s a great walk.
enjoy your videos. I am a Texan. I will be in Scotland doing the Great Glen Way in about two weeks, perhaps I will run into you there. Some other walks/hikes in UK coming next year. Also, I will be doing the Pacific Crest trail spring of 2022. Perhaps I will run into you along the way somewhere. If you see a short chubby five foot tall 60 year old walking along, perhaps it will be me….lol….
Looking forward to the videos of the trail Abbie, and thanks for the breakdown in the pack.
Really enjoyed this video abbie, I’m going wild camping tommorow, testing out a new tent (Salewa litetrek 2) and a new stove (primus spider set) hoping they will both perform ok. Really enjoy your videos,I watch them as lessons for home schooling (obviously the educational ones). I can’t wait for the next one, atb Lewis
Way too much gear! for two hundred miles. 10 lb tent. Your crazy. Your poor back. You can half that weight check out North American backpacking sites.
Hi Abbie, i really enjoy your videos and wish you much luck on your hike! i always find packing videos so interesting:) i think you could make yours even better if you would spread it out on some sort of blanket so you would see an overview of al the items you are bringing instead of putting them in a pile beside you. your passion inspired me to take my very first hike, i’m doing a week on a part of the camino portuges;) happy travels!
