Brandon Marcello, PhD, believes one of the main benefits of exercise while on your period is the endorphin release and workout “high.” He also said that since endorphins are a natural painkille.These are just a few of the benefits you could experience while exercising during your period. In addition, general physical fitness is important for female health and can reduce the risk of serious medical issues as we age.
These diseases and conditions include heart attack, stroke, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes.(Typical menstrual cycles can last from 21 to 35 days, but they always begin at the first sign of your period.) Training during this crucial time period can yield greater power, strength, and muscle mass than any other time of the month, according to a new study from Umeå University in Sweden.Walking during periods increases circulation as well as endorphin level – your bodies feel good chemicals.
It also helps to reduce tension in your abdomen, lower back and legs too. Experts all agree that regular exercise can help reduce uterine cramps by relaxing the muscles around that area.Benefits of exercise during period You may notice that, when you’re on your period, you feel more lethargic and less energetic. This is due to the fact that both progesterone and estrogen are at their lowest during your period. Often this leads women to avoid the gym completely during menstruation – but this may not be a good idea.
The endorphins released during workouts reduce the perception of pain and moving your body gets your blood circulation going which helps reduce menstrual cramps. Exercising is also known for reducing your levels of stress and anxiety, which can then decrease.If you don’t get tired while doing an abs workout during your period, or other kinds of gym workouts during periods, fatigue probably won’t be an issue. On the other hand, there’s no reason to power through intense or long workouts that might be a bit more challenging for you during this time of the month because of heavy bleeding, pain or.The guidelines suggest that you spread out this exercise during the course of a week.
Also aim to do strength training exercises of all major muscle groups at least two times a week. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day.When it comes to exercising during your period, it’s always best to listen to your body.
If the cramping and bloating has rendered you bedridden, give the day’s sweat session a miss. But if you feel up to it (because there are really good reasons to exercise during your period ), here are seven workouts that you can do.Examples: stretching in bed, light yoga, walking Follicular phase (the week or so after bleeding) – Hone your building energy during this time of the month by trying out new classes, engaging in more social types of exercise like dancing, or simply get really into your regular routine.Many women wonder whether it is OK to work out during their period.

In fact, you may find that you can be more physically active and at a greater intensity at certain times of the month than at other times.Exercise during your period because, contrary to popular belief, this is beneficial for your body as it helps reduce menstrual cramps and other period symptoms that affect us on those days.
Among the main benefits you will receive by doing sports during your menstrual cycle are: Reduction of abdominal pain and you’ll tolerate the discomfort better.These bursts of vigorous activity fall under the category of high-intensity interval training or HIIT.
Alternating between moderateand high-intensity intervals in a workout allows you to burn calories and improve your cardiorespiratory fitness in half.A little bit really can go a long way. Research continues to emerge supporting the notion that small bouts of exercise accumulated throughout the day may provide many of the same benefits as one continuous bout of activity, including improvements in aerobic fitness and even weight loss.Lower body exercises is great ways of inducing your period.
They stimulate the muscles in your stomach and pelvis, and get things moving. A exercise for your thighs is a major plus, also. Stand tall on your feet hip width apart and your arms down of your side.

This is a good workout no doubt but not sure I’d recommend it for that time of the month. Period workouts should consist of slower movements and deep stretches. Exercises like this are great for the week after your period when your hormones are high and you get that burst of energy!!

Yeah I would say two good weeks out of every month really the rest is just spent crying a lot and questioning my actual existence and meaning in the cosmos. Periods can be soooo much to handle. Its exhausting, working out does help tho! I think getting some cute outfits will help tho, I’m gonna try this.

i just realized i went running about two weeks ago on a really hot day (28C) and i barely made it home. i was also a week short of my perioids. oopsie! glad i didn’t take my dog with me that day.. i never would when it’s that hot outside..
I take the first 2 days of my period as rest days for that week every month. My cycle is ridiculously heavy the first two days so training is not an option. Also i have NO energy and usually sleep all day when i get home from work. Once day 3 comes, its business as usual lol back to the gym ♀️

I learned quickly to NEVER wear WHITE leggings to the gym while on my period
After watching Bret Contreras’ hip thrust form videos, whenever I see someone’s head and shoulders bobbing back and forth while performing hip thrusts I can’t help but immediately think their form is wrong lol. He does them in a way where your hips go up and down, but your head and shoulders stay stationary. It’s ALL hip movement and it’s a glute KILLER. It changed my hip thrust game for sure. Highly recommend watching a few of his videos on the maneuver.

We can do all types of exercises during our periods. It just depends on how we feel and how our body responds to it. Exercise helps to ease pain and it has helped me personally a lot. I do HIIT and cardio while on my period too and it helps me ♡

Okay, this totally makes sense, I feel freakishly energize during my menstruation cycle, I feel less fatigue than in the 2 weeks before my menstrual cycle. Thank you for enlighten me!

Funny I already noticed the pattern that as soon as I am done with my cramps I start to have my best trainings for two weeks both with strenght and flexibility which also helps of course my skill trainings and then closing up towards my period start I already started to accept that I will not have to push myself the most or expect the best results but just keep going

I appreciate this video so much. I’m an intermediate lifter and after getting frustrated with “randomly” losing 25 lbs to a whole plate of lifts on certain days I finally was like…omg every time that happens it’s period week. Lol. So I started tracking my cycle with my PRs and I can definitely hit lifetime PRs during ovulation. It seems obvious now but at the time it wasn’t. Ovulation is when T, and E is raging. Menstruation is almost zero hormones. So I switched menstrual week to rest days on cramp days (surprisingly working out makes my cramps way worse and the internet says it shouldn’t) and then I do high rep low weight for the rest until my hormones kick back in…about 5-7 days. Just seeing that other women are aware of training around their cycle makes me feel better lol. It’s normal and not talked about much!
We were doing something in class and we had to workout so i whispered to my teacher i cant im on my period she said u still can then we went to the hall so other ppl won’t hair but she said its better to exercise but i wear pads so i think it would gush out

Question though, if you put your body through stress (workouts) you build cortisol, with a bit too much cortisol and ovulation cannot happen. So can you expand on this please? Cortisol and delay of ovulation because of workouts, specifically intense workouts?

Yes!!!! I started looking into this trying to find out why I kept having that overtrained ‘i need a deload week’ feeling every 4 or 5 weeks. I’m so pleased to have found this out. Ive now overhauled my training programme. Wish me luck. Thank you for disseminating this info. I hope it will help more women realize that its probably not laziness, just hormones.
I have never heard of ANY fitness guru talk about PMDD. I was beginning to think I was part of an invisible group of women. I suffer immensely from PMDD, so much that I take two antidepressants to combat it.

I search for this topic only because it’s that time for me, I’m actually taking a few days off because the way I’m feeling I could not workout, I dont get cramp, but the Yaki feeling down there, the bloat, the blood flow etc. I do believe at the beginning of your monthly one should not feel pressure to lift weight or workout in any form or shape untill the last few days, that sound better.

I was afraid I was imagining it, misinterpreting the information, or just moving backward. When I worked out on my period I was in such pain afterwards I crawled into my bed and urged myself to pass out. It really depends on the individual, but it’s okay if you don’t work out on your period at all. I generally get terrible cramps and trying to exercise on top of it is horrible idea for me.
This was the first video I watched of emi’s, that got me more into my fitness journey, at that time I had the food thing down pact, but I didn’t even know what an Ab exercise was, I just needed something to stop the cramps. Now I am here years later to reminisce and be active during mensuration (I usually do regular work outs during this time) and I’m so glad you have been a big part of my journey thanks emi

This is so freaking helpful! I’m a runner who is beginning to break into weight training, and I have always found that I’m able to push myself to run a higher amount of mileage (usually +2mi) during the follicular phase/ when I’m on my period, and I’ve always been curious as to why. When I first started running competitively, I would get discouraged when my body wouldn’t react as well to running high mileage, but still crave a carbo-load a lot more during the luteal phasewhich never made much sense until now! Hey. I am a 24 year old guy, I dont really watch your videos because your content is not really geared towards me, but I ended up watching your boobjob video through a bit of a strange journey. I have for as long as I can remember been very firmly against changing what nature gave you (male or female) in order to try and achieve self love.
I see you have turned off comments on that video, which really makes me a bit sad, because I wanted to tell you that the courage you showed in that video to be brutally genuine and honest about your choice, and the fact that you did it from a state of self love because you wanted it, really changed my perspective a lot. For some reason it never crossed my mind that you can decide to make a change like that, not because you feel like you need it, but just because you want it.

I really feel bad for missing out on my workout. But I get rashes in my inner thighs due to sanitary pads so I don’t. It’s always better to give rest to ur body for first two days instead of dealing with cramps plus rashes.

It is dangerous to do upside down positions during periods. Blood can halt and go backward and can cause, Toxic shock syndrome.

For people who don’t experience very heavy flow, and dysmennorrhea maybe its possible but its not for everyone. As we all experience our periods very differently. Try out a few things even excercise. It did help some people so maybe it’ll work for you.
A big reason why I love working out is because of how it makes me feel. It puts me in a good mood. However, I have really heavy periods that are quite painful, especially on the second and third day and I have to skip the workout even though I really don’t want to. Because physically, my body doesn’t feel it’s right to workout. It’s not about being lazy! I feel pissed during my period that i can’t workout the way I want to. When my period is over, I’m excited to be able to go back to the gym and sweat it out.

I’d love to see something in regards to training in menopause. I’ve been weight training since I was 18 but now in my 50’s. What kind of gains should I expect or can I aspire to? I feel like it is expected that things taper off BUT can I or should I still train as hard as I can? I have to strongly disagree with her. I workout regularly and rarely take a day off due to laziness or excuses. But on the heaviest day of my period, I let my body relax and have a cheat day. On my heaviest day, working out increases pain and I really feel better for taking that ‘me’ day instead. But all the other days of my period, I stay on my exercise schedule.

I really appreciate this video. I only started jogging two weeks ago. I’ve hated it my whole life and I’m just now starting to enjoy it. It’s made me feel so much better and I’ve already lost 10 lbs. However the thought of my period scared me because I know just how bad it would be for me to take a week off of jogging. All that progress gone. When I’m on my period I don’t exercise at all, and I stay away from eating unhealthy too because we as women have those sweet and salty cravings while on our periods. As soon as I’m off my period I exercise hard twice a day up until my period comes again.
