Supplements containing BCAAs, or branched-chain amino acids, are popular with bodybuilders and athletes for boosting muscle growth and performance. Limited research suggests that BCAAs may also.Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. BCAA supplements are commonly taken in.
Branched-chain amino acids may be of some benefit to people with liver disease, according to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry. In tests on rats, researchers found that branched-amino acids may help protect against abnormalities in blood sugar metabolism commonly associated with cirrhosis (a disease marked by scarring of the liver). When a diet is low in branched chain amino acids, which can occur in vegetarian or low-protein diets, supplementation can be beneficial for those interested in the anabolic, muscle recovery and performance-enhancing properties of branched chain amino acids.
Branched-chain amino acids are also called BCAAs. They come from proteins found in food like red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, and dairy. BCAAs may help with brain problems caused by liver damage. What are the precautions when taking this product?
Branched-chain amino acids stimulate the building of protein in muscle and possibly reduce muscle breakdown. Branched-chain amino acids seem to prevent faulty message transmission in the brain.Branched-chain amino acids play an important role in regulating glucose.
They are continuously released from the liver and other internal organs to skeletal muscles to maintain blood sugar levels. Having enough of these amino acids in the body can help improve glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity in healthy people.Branched-chain amino acids are essential nutrients. They are proteins found in food. Your muscles “burn” these amino acids for energy.

BCAA’s can also help you maintain muscle mass if you are looking to cut some weight but want to stay muscular. If looking to increase you muscle mass, they can also play a very large role.
The branched-chain amino acid leucine plays a direct role in appetite suppression. There seems to be a mind-body connection related to leucine. Leucine stimulates mTOR, which is a growth factor for muscles. Supplementation with leucine plays a.Research shows that branched chain amino acids can be beneficial for men and women, and may help increase muscle growth, speed up weight loss and improve athletic performance.
Therefore, the best BCAA for women and men may vary based. Here are a few benefits of branched-chain amino acids supplements that will allow you to keep your muscles intact while you go down the path of dieting: They Increase Protein Synthesis in Your Body Branched-chain amino acids help stimulate your body’s muscle protein synthesis. You must be wondering what protein synthesis is.The health benefits of branched chain amino acids align with heightened consumer preferences for protein-rich diets.

So if the protein powder is better why even buy and take Bcaa? Make no sense if you already take protein
I would definitely add them during a dieting phase where your restricting calories to help maintain muscle but not during a bulk where your getting lots of protein just my 2 cents
What you are saying seems to be possibly true, and it seemed to have started working on me (I’m 59) But I got tired of all the sweet/sugar (50%?) contained in the drink (candies I don’t eat, and candy drinks are probably doing worse in some other area of my well fit but older body) so I stopped using. My favorite drink is water and coffee (no sugar). Is there any BCAA’s that are not like opening a bag of sugar (poison). I would love to have some help to up keep my muscles: GOD knows that gravity is pulling me down more as I gracefully grow older.
his theory only works for young healthy people.not so much for elderly who have metabolic resistance there are studies out there especially leucine on RCT human trails approved muscle recovery
hey Sean I am on a dieting phase and am a pure vegetarian so I only get one scoup of whey after my workout, will bcaa be helpful as I am just beginning and get hell of sore

Thank you Doctor, can you please make a video about how much protien to build muscles
you cannot build muscle with three single amino acids you need the rest of the amino acids to make a complete protein without a complete protein protein synthesis does not occur
The prob is what supplement companies put in those bcaa products, which is much less of what is promised. i dont have the study at hand right now but they measured the amount of bcaa in some of the more popular brands and the content of bcaa was a lot lower and wouldt make convenient to buy it, you’d get more from most whey protein powders if you considered the price/bcaa content ratio.
I started taking this a few days ago. I have an ion channelopathy disorder which causes post exertional malaise. I’m hoping BCAAs help!
Supplements….just money makers.:) As mentioned…if on a healthy diet no one NEEDS supplements…guys with BCAA in jugs in the gym are “posers”…or just meatheads who bought into the marketing by the supplement companies…Though, getting all nutrients totally from foods (avoiding man-made) does get expensive…some people might not be able to consume enough food…so they buy whey…
One of my favorite medical education channel ever and that’s saying a lot!
If you have whey protein there’s no need for bcaa coz Whey already has bcaas in them so there’s no need
Helps me drink more water so if that’s all it does for me then sweet
I have taken BCAA’s and they have really helped me with recovery. I definitely don’t feel tired anymore. It also effects my sleeping though because after takeing then it’s very hard for me to sleep
The brand I use is muscle tech.
If your resting for over an hour in between sets, that’s a mighty long lunch break
Activates mTOR, promoting protein synthesis but also can increase cancer cell growth.
can i take amino acids while taking HB pressure medication?
i want to add this on my whey protein supplement.
hey guys,
check out my review of amino hydrate BCAAs from Applied Nutrition

make short videos, don’t elaborate, be precise. im not going to watch 10 minute if its not porn.
Wow!! You are fantastic this is the first your video I watched and I am 100% your fun from now on
If you don’t need BCAA’s “after” your workouts for “recovery” time assistance, then you are working out like a 10 year old girl. #FACTS
do you, or should you take a muscletech neurocore pre-workout before and this after?
BCAA is consumed during workout to help fatigued muscles, no one ever claimed it builds muscles. It keeps the energy level up. Your videos are informative but this one is way twisted. You against whey protein and then you endorse your own brand of supplements. Well nothing wrong if you endorse your products however pls don’t misguide.
I never took any BCAAs when I did olympic weightlifting and powerlifting, but I’m taking BCAAs for my marathon training. I truly feel a difference because my legs are just taking a pounding every day and need all the recovery help to keep my legs fresh.
I consume a lot of whole eggs and high fatty meats for the testosterone spike, heaps of leafy green vegetables and mushrooms… 45 years of age and making good gains. The supplements that do work for me is Creatine, Collagen protein powder, Camu Camu powder and Rhodiola Rosea preferably Siberian
They work for youngsters into sports performance. But adults past 17 to 18 dont notice much.
Load of uneducated crap! No study has ever proven that BCAA’s taken by themselves increase protein synthesis! In fact, they hamper it when compared to EE’s!
I’m a simple man.
I hear science, I see the shoulders, I click sub.
Only thing i take that has bcaa is whey protein, It works great for me
Bcca are leggit! They pretty much protiens broken down and the body can use it to makw atp( body’s energy) and a lot of it 36-38 and the energy can last from hours to days! Creatine doesnt make much adp maybe 2-4 depends snd lasts for a few seconds
Thank u so much! As a novice in the gym, this was very helpful!
8:08 AHHH CRAPPPPP!!!! ARE YOU FREAKIN’ KIDDING ME!……..Thanks Sean….NO one told me this! Now lemme go side eye this Xtend Blue Raspberry…I am soooo pissed though!
Ive only ever used bcaa’s for recovery, never once did i think it would build muscle. For me it helps with minimising pain/soreness.
Thanks for addressing the vegan intake as well as the animal foods. If BCAA supplements only contain three of the essential amino acids, would they even be worthwhile for muscle growth? It’s my understanding that for muscles to be able to utilize amino acids for growth, the essential amino acids must be in the proper balance, and all of the essentials must be in place. Otherwise, the amino acids are converted to glucose for energy, and passed out of the body in the urine. Is this accurate? If so, BCAAs would be money poorly spent for anyone under any circumstances because they only contain three of the essential amino acids not complete or balanced.
How about Creatine? Which type of creatine is the best? Can I take creatine on Keto and IF?
I never noticed anything from taking bcaas. They certainly taste good though
I work out fasted and lift weights daily and they make me feel great! I take after/after I break my fast usually around 20 hours
I am missing the actual important function of the BCAAs Proteinbiosynthesis. This video is just about breaking them down for energy catabolism. But in Metabolism also anabolism is included.
Apparently BCAA supplements are pointless. New research has come out and a full amino acid profile is superior to just BCAA’s to increase protein synthesis
bcaa before and during heavy weight training works amazing, way more effect than what i get from creatine, this guy has no clue
Supplemental indus is the biggest scam in the world,,, why cant people understand JUST EAT FOOD… the right food and rite amount… look back at the old days when none of this nonsense was available,, those Roman’s, the greek gods. The gladiators, these people ate food and drank water, NATURAL MUSCLE…. people save ur money and EAT FOOD
I cant tell you how sluggish i used to feel 3/4 of the way though my work out and the rest of that day. since ive been taking teh BCAAs it’s a total opposite efect. i feel great though my last rep and am peppy the rest of the day. BCAAs are great!! what ever it is they really do, i will never stop taking them!
What about saa silk amino acids. are they better? What is the difference?
I love this, thank you. It is hard in this business to have any counter discussion on supplements. especially trainers with us women for Bikini. they have one way of thinking and think we should spend all our money if we want to win without a discussion about will this benifit me and my training or are you just pushing sponsors
I found drinking BCAA drink 30min before and immediately after helps with muscle soreness. Plain water during and after. I’m not lifting for muscle gain so not taking any other supplements or eating huge protein meals. Regarding fasting, I’ve found no matter what, workouts are better on an empty stomach.
I take 10 grams before I go to the gym and 10 grams after I get back from the gym. Mostly, I go to there to check out the totty but on the rare occasion I do any exercise at the gym, I’ll quadruple that amount:-)
Would bcaas be beneficial if I’m doing a lot of cardio. Such as 10+ hours of mountain biking a week?
When you say branch chain amino acids… what do you mean?
What amino acids?
Have you done a video on taking a more complete spectrum of amino acids? The one I take has the 9 essential amino acids and 18 non-essential amino acids. I mostly take the for the 4 amino acids that repair gut damage from ulcers. There are many studies (ok, rat studies, but who’s counting) on nutrients required for gut repair.
Are bcaa suppose to smell bad? I bought some they smell nasty but taste awesome its my first time with this so I’m not sure if that’s normal
He dosint no what he’s talking about a good bcaa, your body can use immediately, unlike food where your body has to break down,I no myself I have way more energy on bcaa, and lift heavier. I also take digestive enzymes which meen your body is taking in more vitamins nutrients etc
1g of protein per pound in body weight!? wow im not even close to what i should be having even with BCAA
Honestly I respect you sean.. Respects from india… Informative!!
Thanks for answering this for me!
(FYIBCAAs is a plural, not a possessive or a contraction, and doesn’t have an apostrophe. )
My husand and I have benefited sooo much from you and your info. I lost 40 pounds. My husband has ALS and along with your information and some alternative therapies his Neurologist has said hes remarkably stable (when he first got diagnosed he was going downhill fast). He is 3 years in (2 yrs got official diagnosis + 1 yr of symptoms before diagnosis we didnt know what was going on) and can still transfer in and out of his wheelchair and hes still breathing on his own! Thank you so much! We recently celebrated our 25th anniversary in Aruba we live in California!!! People always tell him he looks really good and does not look like he has a terminal illness and changing our diet to your recommendation and buying your HIGH QUALITY supplements including your Wheat Juice Grass powder has highly contributed to his well being and better quality of life. Thank you Dr. Berg I tell everyone I can about you and show them your app!
Can you provide a link to the research that referenced? I checked your website and couldn’t find a link to the research there either.
Over the years I have noticed a difference taking BCAA. The biggest difference between getting them from food vs powder is.. Powder is free form therefor you’re getting it to the bloodstream faster. I notice also that my Nitricoxid levels for some reason are higher with supplementation of BCAA throught my day.. I feel like I have a small pump all day, which is great, it fills the muscles up and or fuels them. I can see them not being as effective if you’re getting over a pound of protein per lb per day.. However BCAA free form is proven to generate protien sythisis at a more complete rate. I just feel the pros outweigh the cons.
know that most BCAAs in the market are made from human hair, duck feathers and animal skin/hair!Try fermented natural one, is on the market but more expensive
Dr Lustig maintains that BCAAs are actually harmful in causing fatty liver especially from corn fed beef. I may not be understanding it well. Any chance you can elaborate on that? Thanks
I’d take this all as truth except I know I got more muscle than Dr berg by far so…
I know this will sound strange, but the last 2 weeks I’ve found that cutting my protein intake has increase my muscle mass. I’m actually gaining weight for the first time in my life, without the help of antidepressants (which only put on fat). I don’t know why this is so I stumbled on the video.
I’ll look further into bcaas, but I think they would only help for people with a deficiency or a metabolic problem.
I started some BCAA last yr and had to stop. Not only did it increase my sex drive but I started breaking out with really bad acne and my hair was thinning more. Which leads me to believe it increased my testosterone massively. An increase in testosterone will obviously spike your libido, cause excess oily skin (acne), and hair loss (DHT) is 90% the reason for Male pattern baldness. Which is why meds like finestride are prescribed for hair lossit reduces testosterone but the side effect to that ispossible erectile dysfunction. Anyway I stopped bcca after a few weeks for the above reasons and everything settled back to normal. I just take some
Pea protein nowIF I don’t have time to eat pre/ post workout. My dr friend said providing u have a balanced diet there is absolutely no need for “supplements”. People fall for the marketing (not saying it doesn’t work) but think it’s some kind of magic formula not realising it’s right in the food they’re eating.
Actually, we need all 22 amino-acids: the 9 essential AND the 13 non-essential, reason being that although non-essential means that our bodies CAN make them, our bodies can’t make them out of fats or sugars or out of thin air. Typically, to make a non-essential amino-acid we need an essential one and chemically change it into the non-essential one, which not only is often an expensive and time consuming task, and sometimes circumstantially impossible, but it also increases the consumption, and therefore the needed intake, of essential aminoacids. It is much simpler to make sure you are consuming all 22 amino-acids in the right balance than it is to put too much emphasis on the word “essential”. And you might say I’m being overly picky on the subject, but I’m not: Consider the fact that many amino-acid powder supplements ONLY contain essential aminos. A lot of those aminos are wasted on us, turned to energy, because to get proper balance of all 22 by conversion from the 9 essential ones requires a different balance of the 9, depending on conversion pathways. And some aminoacids traditionally considered non-essential are actually conditionally essential, such as glutamine. Glutamine is considered non-essential because in theory it can be made from glutamate. First of all, that assumes you have extra glutamate, which may not be the case if you avoid MSG. Secondly, the conversion of glutamate to glutamine is performed in our muscles; but if our muscles are in the process of repairing damage from exercise they are too busy to perform this conversion, such that bodybuilders may suffer chronic deficiency of glutamine, which will negatively affect their intestines. This is the reason bodybuilders need to supplement with glutamine, but most of them don’t know the reason; they think it helps them build muscle. Anyways, it is much easier and cheaper to get all 22 amino-acids from whey protein isolate than to buy an amino-acid mix powder. The only issue is that protein needs digesting, so an amino-acid mix may be preferable for consuming at the gym, though I really don’t believe our bodies need amino-acids immediately after or during exercise. Repairs are done at night, while you sleep.
In your opinion is whey protein better in terms of recovery and building muscle or bcaa5000? I’m currently using whey protein and dymatize. I think it works fine but I’m always looking for better results.
Good video. I don’t know if BCAAs help me physically as I get around 200g of protein per day, but it definitely keeps my appetite at bay so I can focus on my work. My hunger sensation isn’t less, per se, but my ability to focus is much better. Usually I will add 1 scoop to my 1L bottle and sip that in the morning on off days, and sip it during my workout on gym days. Though, with all that said, I wonder if the improved attention is pointing to a deficiency in my diet…
I dont always reach my protein goals and I train faster sometimes. The best BCAA out there is Scivation Xtend. Preferably blue raspberry. I take it with my water during workouts. Its pricey but worth it since it’s more than just a bcaa. Also contains citrulline Malate, electrolytes, glutamine, potassium, b6,and best of all no calories.
Would you say that it’s more beneficial to take EAA’s rather than BCCAA’s for building muscles and overall nutrition?
In Your old video you told that these three amino acids are good for muscle repair and rebuild while doing Keto
the real question is what if i’m not getting enough BCAA through diet, then would BCAA greatly benefit me?
I personally think BCAA’s are not suitable for people who are bulking, I think they are more suited for people on a calorie deficit to prevent catabolism.
Can you please do a review on BPI best BCAA (Blue Raspberry)
Can someone answer this:
I just started using BCAA Flash Zero and I”m waiting for my Iso Whey Zero to arrive. Now, How can I use these two? Before or after? I want to be lean and defined.
@Sean Nalewanyj I have a question for you; I train in a fasted state in the morning, 6 days a week, but I cannot afford BCAA’s, but I read that what is reducing the muscle breakdown is the Leucine… Should I just buy the cheaper Leucine instead? Or is there anything in the other 2 BCAA’s that I would need? (I don’t care about the taste of Leucine)
as a competitor training 2 times a day like me, I found BCAAs help me a lot on the PM training session.
great video. I have found so far you give the most solid advice on YouTube. keep up the good work
these give me agression and strength in the gym.creatine does a similar thing but gives me anxiety and very bad cramps.
serotonine makes you feel tired? you have a source to back that up?
I dont track macros AND bcaas or protein shakes. All i do is listen to my body. If u completely cut out “bad” foods then you’re more likely to binge! Just have a cheat here and there but not EVERY SINGLE DAY
I personally don’t agree for my training regiment:)! I use a PRE Energy, & BCAA Drink combined with creatine! My training is over 2 1/2 plus hours, combining intense cardio, & heavy lifting/high reps for the muscle fibers. I drink a hydro whey protein asap afterwards, & combine it with collagen. I can list what I use if anyone wants?
Thumbs up anyway….
Are you kidding me?Thomas said recently that BCAA break a fast dont build muscle and dont prevent muscle loss this industry is a SCAM
I use BCAAs, and swear by them. They may not build muscle by themselves, but They allow you to work out longer with heavier weight. That, plus a bodybuilding diet will build muscle. It’s not a miracle drug like steroids, but it’s definitely a viable option if you’re trying add 5 lbs of muscle. Also, They’re really helpful in maintaining muscle when reducing calories during a “cutting phase”. Now, there is a debate about the differences between BCAA and taking a full spectrum amino acid supplement, just in my own personal experience the BCAAs work a lot better.
It was back in Sonoma at fitness factory he even tried out for wwe
Taking bcca’s supplement has improved my recovery time. BCAA’s are beautiful!
i couldnt even watch this video lmao he punches his hand 20 times halfway through the video XD
Love this channel. This guy just destroys the bullshit in the industry. Best channel by far.
The thing he is forgetting the digestive and enzymatic process your body to go thru you in order to access the BCAAs in food. Coupled with the lack of micronutrients in food today in order to synthesize the enzymes, Most people likely don’t have the amount of enzymes in order breakdown and transfer the aminos efficiently.
In other video’s you recommend BCAA if one has muscle atrophy. Whats the deal?
They have different composition. BCAAs are Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. SAAs are Alanine, Glycine, Serine, Valine, Threonine. If you one to choose between them go with BCAAs there is very poor evidence on effectiveness of SAAs. If you happen not to buy any of them you won’t loose much.
for a cyclist… more than 12 000 km competitive its good for us? thanks
I’m so heart broken:( Maybe I misunderstood the last video I watched about Muscle Atrophy and Sagging Skin. You reccomened Amnios. Well I guess it’s something we already know that You eat protein and work out then you gain muscle. I’m a vegetarian so it’s a little harder. So are you basically saying that its best to have all essential aminos or just the three shown?
Thanx
BCAA’S are absolutely beneficial. When paired with a small portion of complete protein like chicken or yogurt, they increase the protein’s effect on muscle protein synthesis thus increasing the net anabolic response and improving the body’s capability to maintain and build muscle all while sparing calories. This video is completely wrong.
Also you don’t need a gram of protein per lb of body weight it’s a lie. I’ve done it and it adds up the calories and I don’t get cut. I’m about 180lb and I’ve come to find out I’m good wit around 120 grams of protein a day. That’s where the BCAAS come into play. Just make sure you have a meal wit a good amount of protein around 30 grams b4 your work out and maybe an hour after your workout and your fine. You don’t even need a protein shakes. Protein shakes are for people on the run that don’t have time to eat a well balanced meal b4 or after a work out ♀️
I only take Leucine supplement..it has been shown that you get more benefits if you take Leucine on its own.
Break down and repair result in hypertrophy (building of muscle), BCAA help with recovery so…..
Wow thank you for this!! Im am not really wanting to take bcaa because i have a family history of kidney issues. I want to compete and this scientific information helps!
Everywhere I’ve read (that’s credible) shows that supplementing BCAAs is only Necessary if you train FASTED. So only take BCAA before you work out in a fasted state (haven’t ate in 6+ hours)
Are BCAA’s good for slow healing wounds??
I noticed that using BCA the slow healing wounds started to heal very fast & skin acne disappeared. I did fasting to upgrade Insulin receptors, increase Autophagy then Keto diet but BCAA’s DID finally helped a lot & some Chlorella. Niacin flush helped to deliver BCAA’s to the skin. The product has 18 amino acids in this 3 BCAA’s out of all 9 essential.
Wow ty u we re the first to say the truth. Now everybody starts to talk about it. Its crazy.. Im stopping buying it.
Can you make a video on how to prevent miscarriages please dr Berg, thank you.
why i hear people saying you should take 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight? so what im supposed to take 220 grams of protein daily? even with supplements sounds impposible
Yes I was confused about this. Thank u 4 always telling the truth.
So weird how I was just thinking about BCAAs and this video was posted lol
Haha I trained with this guy he’s a beast and pretty nice to
So I drink my BCAAs while I’m working out. I work out 5-6 days a week in the morning in a fasted state with only preworkout in my system, I follow my workout with a protein shake.
My financial position doesn’t really allow me to fill my diet with the clean foods and proteins I would like to as often as I would like. I do feel as if they benefit me just based off of taking them but I’m sure that could be a placebo effect I recover quickly, but I’m sure that could be based off of the other supplements.
I guess my question would be in regards to muscle development, would I be better off ditching the BCAA for a creatine? Previously used both, but in a budget I would like to stick to just three supplements and I don’t plan on giving up preworkout or protein
Interestimg video but in other research ive found that while bcaas could help with energy they will not bud proteininless accompanied by the other 5 or 6 essential amino acids. Is there an updated video that speaks to all amino acids and muscle building?
I put it in my water because it makes it taste better haha any other advantages is just a benefit I find it hard to drink enough water so this helps.
Dr. ur videos are superb with full of information. I request u if u can make a video on insulin resistance with type-1 diabetes and how to reverse it completely. Thanks a lot.
Peel back the button up and let’s see your body of work…would you take dieting advice from an obese doctor….
Uhmm actually bcca is worth it for me at least…Its pretty cheap 120capsules 90kn(15usd) and it lasts for like 40days so money isnt the problem and it keeps my hunger lower and it does help when cutting, reducing body fat and also muscle sorenes damn i can workout all day and still avoid muscle pain the next day
2before gym and 1 after shuld work for you guys
But if u gona pick between bcca’s and protein
Go for whey cause its more worth it.If u got money and wana try it iut go for bouth mix them up or just seperately drink them
*Yeah my grammar is bs calm down just trying to help out and give my opinion
16yrs old
65kg (130?lbs)

I saw a video based that there are some bcaa that are synthesized from animal feathers or human hair. It made me afraid what to buy until I know what is clearly in the product before I make a buy. Tim can you help me out with that.
Great video was wondering does beta alanine contain any calories?
Guys, try guarana powder or capsules. Guaraná is better than coffee, and it’s full of antioxidants. It will give you energy and power during work outs. I stopped using bcaa because its too expensive, so now I use guarana pre workout which is cheap, and glutamine after for recovery.
i wish i could hack the tv in the gym, and broadcast this video 24/7 ❤️
sometimes……………………..the board just messes up.
Since I start taking BCAA almost every day, my almost 50 years of age butt and thigh feels firmer due to all the spinning. I will not stop taking it!
What about..
1the signaling of mTOR?
2the insulin response?

I bought bcaa powder tasted so bad from protein supplies Austrailia tasted toxic
BCAAs are a waste of money. Use that money to buy higher quality whey like hydro whey or iso whey.
Hi dr Berg, I can’t watch the full video, I use BCAA to not burn muscle during workout! Do you agree with It? And is there any harm to take BCAA during work out? And is there any benefit of taking BCAA?thanks
Everyone shiting on bcaa ok I get it, but before I never used bcaa and I had weak workouts. Using bcaa did give my workout performance a high boost so i can’t imagine going to the gym without it.
Everyone DO YOU.
Ppl in the comments are not experts remember that
Best BCAA By BPI Sports Review can i add MET REX CREATINE 4200 AT THE SAME TIME BEFORE GOING TO THE GYM
I was told to take bcaa before my workout to sustain me and whey afterwards to replenish and repair.. plus I eat a lot of protein in my diet! I do cardio 3x a week and lift 2x a week… I assume I’m taking too much.. I’ve been actually getting a mild swollen/ slight pain in my back right side………
People dont take bcas to grow muscle, they take it, when training in a ketabolic state to boost the amino acid pool in the blood, and thereby give the body extra fuel, without it having to catabolise/eat muscle. Ive tried them. Minimal difference but a little is a lot if your training hard. The bcca powder in berry blast makes a delicious intra workout boost on a big session.
Make more videos regarding topics on bodybuilding, the bodybuilding community is very misleading.
Thanks Dr. Berg for debunking yet another myth…! Please also reflect some light on endurance work and it’s dependency on carbs and how to sustain threshold efforts with the least amount of carbs or if possible just with ketones…! Without carbs I can only sustain a level 1-2 effort while racing requires efforts levels up to level 6 (tempo, threshold, v2max, neuromuscular power etc)
I really enjoy this kind of content ❤️ we need more, thank you
As a athlete I can tell you BCAA absolutely increase performance and longevity of performance. I wrestle, box, jitsu and it makes a huge difference for me personally. That being said I do not take everyday, just hard workout days.
You were not clear on what the difference is between the 3 at the start and the other 6. Are they not all BCAAs?
Also, someone told me that there are actually more than 9.
As sensitive as my touch is as a massage therapist, I still cant get just the right touch to make the ouch screen do what I want.
BCAA are for preventing muscle loss during workouts, as far as I understand. Which is a ver real thing.
I guess there’s nothing we need that we can’t get from the real food, whole food without factory packaged, right?
Technically difficulties “ the hell?” Haha Dr. Berg you’re the manlove your videos ✊
This video is so unclear BCCA claim that our body can make the three amino acid that u have mentioned in yes the top three. If Bcca is useless then what is the alternate????
To be truthful, I’ve always had an issue with pharmaceutical branch chain aminos, they really mess with my B vitamins and mood.
But then why do so many bodybuilders SWEAR to BCCA?? BB’s from thugs to professionals?
Take EAA’s instead. BCAA’s alone, is not nearly as effective. In fact… if you eat enough protein, you are getting your BCAA requirements. Complete nonsense.
BCAA’s are touted to stop muscle catabolism. BUT, leucine and tryptophan compete when crossing the blood brain barrier. As a result you end up not sleeping as the tryptophan isn’t converted into serotonin, etc. Leucine does trigger mTOR though.
Ok when we need: we need the 9. A little everyday but not as much as we believe. Thank you from Belgium
You should redo this video and explain the benefits of BCAAs. This is a very misleading video since BCAAs are used for muscle recovery.
Hello, quick question(s):
Does a BCAA powder spike your insulin?
So if I am on Keto, and do weight training. Is a BCAA dink something I can sip on between meals or should I time it differently? (e.g. after/before exercise or meals).
I am doing 16/8 fasting almost every day and pretty strict on 2 meals or max 3 a day, even if 3 I cram them into 8 hours if I can (mostly weight days when one of the meals is a protein shake with coconut oil ).
The one I am taking has less than 1g carb with a 3:1:1 ratio of L_Leucine, L-Icoleucine and L-Valine. I know, it has sucralose… boooo….:(
ps: luckily it doesn’t taste as disgusting as it smells:). As for muscle building: really not sure. Creatine helps a lot and this one help boost energy a bit without caffeine-jitters, so at the end it does help with both weights and HIT cardio.
Thanks Dr Berg for this video because it helps me so much. Please do a video on how a prediabetic who reverse prep diabetic can build muscle and mass thank you.
Why do I always watch one of these video and fill more confused than I did before.
The fitness industry is a business. They don’t care about your wellness, just about selling products.
That is very true. “The ratios of the different amino acids in the dietary
protein must be about the same as the ratios in the body tissues if the entire dietary protein is to be fully usable to form new proteins in the tissues. If one particular type of essential amino acid is low in concentration, the others become unusable because cells synthesize either whole proteins or none at all, as explained in Chapter 3 in relation to protein synthesis. The unusable amino acids are deaminated and oxidized” -Textbook of medical physiology by Arthur guyton”
Having said all of that, there are some suggestion or speculations that bcaa can PREVENT muscle breakdown during exercise (I don’t think anyone is suggesting it builds muscle because you need all the other essential amino acids to synthesize new protein, but suggesting it may prevent muscle breakdown a little bit is fairly reasonable opposition). The reason for that, when you exercise the BCAA in the muscle get depleted rapidly and by ingesting BCAA during workout, you burn the bcaa you ingested as fuel instead of the muscle bcaa. So theoretically the BCAA you ingested get sacrificed and the muscle bcaa get spared.
Same reasoning applies for fat burning and insulin. In the presence of carbohydrates and insulin, your body utilize carbohydrates as primary fuel source instead fat. That is why insulin is called a “fat sparer” or “fat-sparing” hormone in the literature. Insulin stimulates glucose uptake virtually in almost all cells and there is no need to burn fat when excess glucose is available because the energy demands of the cell is already provided by the glucose through insulin.
There are some evidence that BCAA can improve mental fatigue which enhance your perfomance during your workout. During workout BCAA in the blood drops which increases the ration of L-tryptophan/BCAA-quota. L-tryptophan increases seratonin which makes you more mentally calm and tired which is suboptimal for performance. L-tryptophan and BCAA compete for uptake over the blood-brain barrier and by taking BCAA during workout you can improve L-tryptophan/BCAA ratios and more BCAA get taken up then L-tryptophan, this decreases the seratonin levels in the brain which improves mental fatigue and there by perfomance. -“Advanced nutrition for universities by L. Abrahamsson, A. Andersson, G. Nilsson”
Conclusion: So BCAA may improve your performance which then lead to better muscle building, but it’s more indirect effect then direct effect on the muscle. More research is needed but some evidence are present.
The BCAAs especially leucine are potent stimulators of mTOR so will stimulate hypertrophy. Although the EAAs make up muscle, the anabolic or catabolic signalling will have a huge effect on whether muscle will break down or build up. mTOR from the BCAAs/Leucine is one such anabolic signal.
Damn.. so bcaa during workout isn’t good enough for maintaining the muscles!
I’ve always wanted to stop supplements cause it does ruin my body on the long run somehow, but the fitness trainers will never stop recommending this to me!
Dr. Since BCAA Do not make muscle, how do I build muscle quickly? I am on Keto for 9 weeks now, the diet plan I hav eon Keto is the Gain Mass. I have been going to the gym and do of a little bit of both. Cardio and Lifting weight. Lifting weights not so much. Not sure if I will increase my caloric intake? Or more protein. I usually take 70-85 gym portein ang I’m on 130-180 gm. Carbs my norm. Hard;y pass to 25 gm Carbs per day. Thanks Dr Berg!
But what if you have a hernia plus perhaps a small bowel prolapse? Wouldn’t a bit more protein be good and needed to repair that damage besides just the first things first which is reducing carbs and glycated protein foodstuffs?
