Thanks everyone and Seth for the ideas. I’ve been a fan of Balega for a long time, but I’ll definitely try Injinji after hearing all the positive feedback!
Ive tried nike, asics, smartwool, stance, drymax, and feetures. Hands down feetures are my favorite, super durable with a great warranty on them. I have had less blisters wearing them and are overall very comfortable. Smartwool is up there too!
I find the stance website a bit annoying. When I click on “Run” it just comes up with a load of black socks! Just doesn’t seem to have good usability or user experience
Haven’t tried very many different brands but so far Feetures are my favorite.
Socks, I love the Balega blister resist socks. They have mohair fiber and feel great.
QOD Darn Tough fan boy here. ❤️ I wear them daily for the office, running and hiking. Cotton sucks…I mean socks…just don’t work for my sweaty feet…especially for summers in Texas! The ASICS Quick Lyte Cushion Single Tab come in a 3-pack and have also been a cost-effective non-cotton summertime option for me, too.
Been running for a long time I love smart wool, stance I’m obsessed they work n don’t give me blisters
Really good review of socks in this one mate! Now you have a decade worth of socks to get through
Helpful information. But cotton socks for all that water you run in? Cotton holds water. Why not a more technical sock?
C’mon @kofuzi you don’t wear the same socks 2x without washing?
I wear CEP Dynamic+ Short socks religiously. For recovery, my go-to’s are the CEP RxOrtho+ Plantar Fasciitis sleeves, and Compressport calf sleeves and Compressport full leg sleeves
Had a recommendation from yourself on stance socks and they are fantastic and look pretty good to
Totally partial here: Smartwool Elite Ultra light &/or Outdoor Light PhD hands (feet) down! Warm in winter, cool in Summer; come in several colors and lengths; high quality come with a guarantee; last years, not months, soft and comfortable…great value for the price. LOVE THEM, and I have tried a gazillion brands.
INJINJI TOE SOCKS. They are a hassle to fold, and slow to put on. but they are cheap and high quality with a great cut.
love feeling my toes splay out in my altra wide toe box. they are made for toe shoes but i wear them in normal shoes. Never had real regular running socks
My favourite is Injinji toe socks.. i like to have layers in between individual toes.. it feels less sticky and reduce my blisters..
I have been to chicago a few times. Lovely city. But running must be a nightmare. The cold is a nightmare for me:) I hate it. I usually start sweating and get cold. IHence I go inside for the treadmill. Anyway a good video!
I’ve used More Miles socks for about 4 years now. Quite cheap compared to other brands. They’re well padded for long runs, and last forever.
Aah socks where there are just as many brands as there are brands of cars on the road HAHA.
Anyways as far as running socks go I have been experimenting with brands recently. Most recently I tried Bombas socks they were decent. But my favorite brand of the ones I have tried to this point have been Stance breathable, fit nice and have plenty of colors to choose from.
Does it take 14 minutes to find out whether or not running socks matter tho?
Been running in Feetures socks for many years and very happy with them I’d recommend them.
I’ve run in More Mile London socks for many many years. Never once had blisters or hot spots (that’s probably the kiss of death!!). I find a cool wash and definitely no tumble dry, helps them last longer. Really interested to try some of those others, but the More Mile give me a great deal of confidence.
almost a whole hour of content between you and Seth today thank you!
I have a pair of Smartwool socks, very good at wicking, and doesn’t heat up the foot. Also I have a pair of Siftwick… they’re just okay…..
I tried to run with a hat/beanie the other day, but I kinda felt claustrophobic with it. Like I couldn’t breath and couldn’t get rid of the heat.
Awesome video, thank you so much, since there are alot of shoe reviews all over the place but very few sock reviews.
IMHO the combination of socks and shoes can also matter: In my CarbonX I can only run with CEP, but in my Rincon I can wear any kind of socks. Just like you, I cant run in “twin-skin-socks”. I tried some “wright-socks” and it was the first time in my life that I got blisters.
What is your experience with the different materials? What to look for or rather not to try?
I’m a new runner but been hiking for years, and socks are kind of a big deal among hikers. Y’all runners need to get your feet in Darn Tough socks. Lifetime guarantee, merino wool fabric (moisture wicking and naturally odor-free so you can wear them a couple times before they need a wash), and made in the USA. I love the Endurance series most of the year but run in Hike/Trek series in the winter and Vertex when it’s really hot.
Love this video. Training for first marathon in February in Arizona, but I live in NY. This helps.
I adore my 2xu soft -padded compression running socks. I use them at any occasion and any weather
My favorite are FEETURES… Love that wrap around support on my arch while leaving my toes comfortable.
You get a like! I’d like to know you’re opinion of the Pegasus 36 Shield vs Pegasus 36 GTX (Gore-Tex) for running on the road during wet runs. There is very little on YouTube about the GTX for road running, only a bit for trails.
Here in Eastern Europe this is the hottest autumn from what i m remember.
I been waiting for this video! It’s just the beginning of November yet we already have snow and temps of -10C. I’ve been running on the treadmill but I hate it
Zac beat me to it but don’t listen to him, Smoke’s is not good. La Banquise in Montreal is the best poutine in the world and most diners in Quebec will beat out Smoke’s any day.
Stance quarter height running socks!! Perfect light compression of your arch and enough coverage to make sure your sneaker tongue and heel don’t cause any chafing.
Thanks for the TCA recommendation. Was looking for another pair of tights/trou6 for the winter and at £18.99 on Amazon UK it’s worth trying them out.
Must’ve felt like Christmas, getting all those packages! Lol
Kymira infared tech socks good shout for recovery especially. Sockmine great also
You are scaring me with the sliding!! I would have busted my behind
I only use Stance socks. They’re incredible especially in the colder weather!
I love belega socks, I have worn all of their models and I really like them all. Maybe the hidden comfort the best! I also love stance and have so many of theirs in different heights!!
I prefer to leave out socks, because the less weight you have on your feet, the faster you are. Only below about 8 degrees Celsius, socks are needed.
At 2:20…drive onto the trailer parked on the right.
Socks…Stance, Drymax, Smartwool, Injinji, Salomon and a couple of others I can’t even remember in the last year. Been a little sock silly. At the moment I prefer the Stance Uncommon. But in ultras I have mostly worn Injinji. Latest socks were the Salmon Pro Xa or something like that. Very comfortable and thinner than I thought they would be but whilst running didn’t even notice them. So that must be a good sign. Strangely I have found my feet getting hot in the Stance socks lately, which never happen before. Oh and waterproof socks from SealSkinz which first time felt weird but on a real wet long run was wonderful not getting cold and wet feet. However, I think it was whilst on a 50 mile ultra I got a very small hole on the left foot where my big toe is so that let in a little dampness. Disappointed.
I wear smartwool year roundthicker in cold. medium to thin in the warmth.
Socks are a bit like underwear for me. As long as nothing is dangling out we’re all good.
I’m in Minnesota, so I’ll just say enjoy that affiliate link kickback!
Another great video. Many thanks for so many ideas.
One question that I have is how do you organize drinking during long winter runs ( about 2 hours)? Do you carry bottles with you? Or do you place the bottles somewhere?
And, what do you drink? Warm beverages?
5 years in injinji socks (only) and more 5 years without blisters. Best socks ever.
I have had 7 pairs, and I still have 7 pairs, even my very first pair is still in super condition.
From what I understand from Stance, is that they use some kind of special threading that makes the sock have more bounce back and that it molds to your foot. It also has ventilation and anit-microbrial material. The thread is also made so that it is durable and so it can last longer than other socks
Didn’t know you had your own running shop as well. Glad you made the plug for your own business!
I really prefer nylon socks. Asics and Skechers branded ones are easy to find. I think they wick sweat the best and pair well with knit running shoes.
There are some really great people in this YouTube family!!!!!
I’ve been a fan of Wrightsock Double Layer for over a decade
Great video.. odered a pair of tca pants! Price to go to not try them.
I’m very simple/casual when it comes to running socks, I just wear the simple Nike dri-fit that come up halfway on the Achilles
wicking socks are very annoying when you take off your shoes and walk across tile surfaces.
Thanks for the tips…. try these from Amazon or Roadrunners. They are a great deal and wick moisture away better than cotton…. and they are made in the USA: https://www.amazon.com/R-Gear-Running-Quarter-Breathable-Performance/dp/B07BW52GZ5
I really love my Stance socks, really well made. I’m happy to confess I do ‘a few’ runs without washing them!
should I pick different type of socks for road vs trail running?
Pretty much the only brand of running socks I use are stance. They are extremely comfortable hold up very well in the wash and I love the colors that they offer.
QD: Injinji toe socks are my favorite! On the longer runs my toe nails on the smaller toes would begin to rub against each other & bleed. And those socks have helped prevent that
Heh I like the smartwool in the winter too. And I just bought the NSO LONG RUN too some weeks ago and I really like it for longer runs!
I remember my first pair of running socks was from Drymax, it made a huge difference rathen than using standard cotton socks and especially for doing a trail running race back in the day.
After that I have tried several other brands such as: Smartwool, X-Socks, Inov-8, Hilly, Compressport and Wrightsocks (dual layer). Currently I am using mostly Inov-8 during my trailrunning and the X-Socks when I do road running, sometimes alternate with Compressport.
Big fan of Smartwool (can be a bit pricy but worth it). I tend to use these when I had a race, knowing that I will be using them for quite many hours and knowing that I had zero issues with blisters.
I think in the end it´s a matter of mix and match to find the right combination. What it works for you, it may work differently for me or any other person. However, it´s always good to have an insight about a particular model/brand before making a purchase decision or sometimes just risk to try and find our own conclusion.
Cheers!
QD: Gold toe powersox. BUT, I’m getting tired of no shows. Grit around my ankles…
I used smartwool socks doing the Marathon des Sables. Comfortable, not too warm (though was using the thinest ones), no blisters.
I live in Wisconsin and damn it got cold fast this year! Great video and run warm
Give Steigen’s a go. So thin you don’t realise you are wearing any and never get blisters
which one would anyone recommend for black toes? i feel like my feet slip into the front of the shoe too much specially when i go faster, giving me huge problems in some toes.
If you slide into the lake you must put that in a video.
Have you ever done that?
I have been using for years low cut socks from Nike and starting using Asics and Adidas long running socks since a while ago.
I like running shoes to be true to size fit and so I have to use those very thin socks.
I grew up and lived in and around Chicago and was running 100 mile weeks there. I now live in the Rocky Mountains not far from Boulder. Let me tell you the winters here are much more pleasant than Chicago! Over the years I have gravitated to Sport Hill apparel. I am not a spokesman for them. I spend my own money to buy their gear. Their equipment is durable, layerable, and you can get stuff suited to the cold/colder/coldest ranges. Check it out. Enjoy your winter running!
Own a pair of Physix Gear Sport Compression Socks. I also have cotton ankle socks.
Sock it to me! I personally have to wear socks that are just above the ankles because the super low cut ones don’t protect me from the chaffing the shoe gives me around that area.
Here is something for you: separate compression calf sleeve + sock? I haven’t understood separate compression calf sleeves until I started to run ultras 3-4 years ago. You need to know that I’m 6’4″ and my feet has only B width but very long (size 13 US / 47 EUR). My legs are lean, so if I select a compression sock for my ankle/calf circumference, the length of the feet portion of the sock will be small enough that it has a strong compression force towards the axis of my feet heel to toe. This in the end aggravates my big toe nail in ultra distances. I never had blisters below my big toe nail before ultras. I realized I need to buy a looser compression sock for my feet and separate compression calf sleeves. Anatomy is extremely important, much more than sock brand (Swiftwick, Injinji, Balega, CEP,…). Anatomy restrict my shoe choices (to the point that color or nothing matters for me, fit is rare like I fit the Vaporfly 4% (non knit), I don’t fit the Vaporfly 4% knit, the Zoom Fly SP or the Zoom Fly due to the height of the toe box this is a whole other story). My current racer is Injinji Ultra Compression OTC.
Feetures are great in the summer. They keep your feet dry on soupy days
socks do matter, but I really try to find shoes that i can run in without socks. Because i have a narrow foot, sock sometimes create slippage, so socks are mainly for winter running.
Balega for cold weather, injinji and swiftwick for warmer weather. But, foot glide or some lubricant is crucial with all socks. Even Injinji can leave a blister if I don’t lubricate my feet The longer you run, the more vital this becomes. Just run an ultra without lubricant or running socks, it’s painful
Only run between 55-65miles/week, but I just wear any random pair socks from a pack of 5 for £5 and have never had issues
I love injinji socks, I was a bit cynical at first but I swear by them now. The new trail ultra crew range are great.
I totally love your channel! Really like this episode. Would you have one of your club member lady do the same for winter running essential for ladies? 2) I understood that you went back to Apple Watch but, I did not understand what you had as a “second” choice. I found hard to use touch screen during the winter (Boston winter!!!). Thanks!!! Great YouTube content!!!
With all these new socks now you can ditched them lockdown marathon socks
Noticed no Nike products in this. Was this due to your current stance on Nike? Or just don’t really use Nike products that much in winter?
Is it best to have a moderate stride in the cold so that you don’t increase body heat loss?
Ive switched to running with 98% Bamboo socks, so comfortable and no issies afterwards, seem to help regulate temps better also in very cold weather.
Used to run in cheaper multipack running socks which gave me issues from time to time. Spent a bit more on some Stance crew socks and cant see myself buying anything other than them.
Thanks for sharing, I ran last year at about 6 degree F out and my water bottle froze, I don’t know if I want to carry a soft flask under a layer or two or what. Also cold kills cell phone batteries. The 17 miles I ran felt like 20, the body has to work harder to stay warm. You definitely called out some gear i want to try, thanks.
Our winters are nowhere near as bad as yours but it’s snowing here in the valleys in South Wales UK at the moment
Injinji all the way! The amount of blister relief and sweat management from their toe socks are incredible. I don’t ever think about which of my 20+ Injinji socks to use; all cuts, sizes, and cushion are beyond any other sock I have used, and always make for a perfect run.
I’ve tried Runderwear and a few other lesser known brands. However I’ve found myself most comfortable with Hilly Twin Skin. I do have some stance socks I haven’t tried yet. That said, I’m sure there are plenty more I could get my feet into!
Quick list of socks depending on usage:
Road racing: Nike / Compressport / 2XU, ultra light, no show.
Road training (not long runs): any brand. Cheap socks work great here (NewBalance, Adidas,…). Any sock in general, just check the weather.
Long run: cushioned one. NewBalance / DryMax / Balega / Viking / Stance / IceBreaker / UnderArmour.
Trail: high socks, sometimes up to the knee (compared to no show / quarter, for road running). Salomon / DryMax / Viking / IceBreaker / Compressport.
Thank you for the videos, they’re great!
I just found your channel and I really like what you are posting! Thoughtful, usable advice throughout. I also appreciate that you’re going after details that are normally glossed over. I just posted my review of the Saucony Endorphin Pros and would love your opinion. As a running YouTuber, I know the kind of work that goes into these videos! Keep it up! I just subscribed!
There is no good cheap sock. Invest in yourself and get the best quality socks for the best deal. The Injinji liner socks (coolmax & nuwool versions) are excellent, no cushion, they don’t overheat and dry fast. The SmartWool curated line are ultralight as well, and well-designed, and their light hike is so thin I can see my toenails through a black sock. They are very cool running. I still keep the Nike elite knee-length compression socks around since they are so durable and make a great recovery sock
Great video! I can blister at a stand still. I have tried numerous Injinji socks but they rip my feet to pieces. I love CEP socks they have helped me with blisters, brilliant.
For me the very best running socks are Stance brand. Love the thin ones for running. Ran 3 marathons with them and would wear nothing else
You get blisters from your toe nails rubbing against your other toes
Running socks are a must for me. Cotton socks give me athletes foot. No issues with synthetic material running socks. My faves are by far the Balega Hidden Comfort. I also dig Feetures Merino+ stuff.
Darn tough Smart wool nothing beats merino wool in my opinion! Year round for any activity and every day wear. For synthetic socks I like Wright sock for running or cycling.
I would not recommend TruSox because they will probably give you a blister. They have grip pads not just on the outside of the sock, but the inside as well. I swear by Balega. No blisters= happy me. They at times seem a little thick. But they’ve changed my life.
thanks for running with me, it was the highlight of the week. Stance Feel 360 crew length is my fav as you and your subscribers now know.
The part at the end is very, very true and something to be cautious about. Long runs in the windy cold can really ruin you
I think the MD on those compression socks is for medium, not medical:D
Feetures are my favourite socks I used to wear stance but I like feetures fit the compression around the arch light padding and the front and rear tab. They are red hot.
I hurt myself running on snow, slush, and ice last year. I found my form on uneven snow/slush/ice was too compromised and left me more prone to injury. I stick to the treadmill now unless the ground is clear outside.
What’s up with the gojiman intro music:) I’ve tried both cheap and expensive socks and now I run in 3 4 usd running socks from the local Lidl store (drymax, low-cut L/R, and fitted). Except when wearing merino wool socks which are my favourite in cool and wet weather.
I have tried just about every running sock out there. Wrightsocks is absolutely the best of the best, but I guess it depends on which model/cut you get. I prefer the medium thickness over the thinner ones, and I live in CA. The dual layer is just special compared to all other brands. I won’t run over 10+ miles unless I’m on these socks. If its less miles than that, then I guess it doesnt matter what sock you use.
If you wanted to go cheap, you could always go the Uniqlo route. Highly affordable and tons of styles, and versatile in terms of when you can wear them. Roadrunnersports drymax brand is also another great choice, but unlike uniqlo, not that great to wear casually if needed since theyre actually made for active sports.
My favorite brand socks are Lurbel. For running, trailrunning, compresive, cycling, TOP. So confort and they dry too quickly. You must take a look Lurbel Bmax socks. http://www.lurbel.es/producto/366/21/1-3/hombre/
I like right socks too, they’re good in the Texas heat to avoid blisters. But my favorite socks are Injinji, as goofy as the toe socks look they are so comfortable and in my opinion/experience give your toes better ability to splay out naturally
Love the real life background! I can relate the the kids toys
I really like Goldtoe Powersox, they’re nicely cushioned and a little compressive through my arch. I’ve got some Puma socks that are similar that I like too that I got at Costco on the cheap.
Steigen. Great light sock for racing, wide range of designs from their website.
Are you using the GoPro Fusion? Love the awesome low angles you’re able to get. Too bad the resolution is a tad low, but overall worth it for the cool perspectives. Nice footage lately!
Haven’t tried high end brand socks other than Ininji which I love but I find it hard to pay $15 and up for a pair of socks. Which is why I was very happy when I stumbled upon Adidas Compression socks. They’re not as nice as the Ininji’s but come close and better yet, a pack of 4 can be found for about the price of a pair of Ininjis.
On a second note: do you use any snow/ice spikes? I am getting concerned about running with these condition (my first year) and our weather is comparable with yours. Any suggestions?
Hey, I live in chicago too! Well more specifically the suburbs. I run cross country in high school and its been miserable here. Still running, keep up the training!
Stance-balega, way better than nike, in my opinion the best generic sicks are under armour.
I like Injinji low cut, really prevents blisters for me. A value brand I would have liked to see reviewed is Fitsok I picked up a pair for 2.49 USD as an add-on to a Running Warehouse order. I like them but don’t have much to compare them to. BTW thanks for all your great content on Run 4Adventure
Did you skip the base layer top? Any recommendations for the tech layers under the jacket?
Glad you brought up this topic. Many runners/running Youtubers poo-poo the topic, but socks are pretty important! Maybe not so related to performance per se, other than avoiding potential issues with their moisture-wicking / blister-avoiding / no slip / highly durable technologies but their overall profile is 100% as important to “fit” as the shoe. Some shoes only fit well with thicker socks, or thinner socks. So it’s the combination that really determines fit.
I’m still trying to find a sock for this summer. I wore hilly twin skin in the cold months and for my marathon but with a marathon coming up in August I need something thinner I feel, yet still supportive. I’m trialing hilly mono skin and stance currently. I’ll check out Sockmine also
I think two ESSENTIALS are: if you’re running during the day in full sun, you NEED sunglasses as the reflection from the snow and ice will wreak havoc on your eyes. If you’re running early or evening, just having some kind of high-visibilty device/clothes if you’re running on driving roads. Stay safe and have fun!
Winter came early and with a vengeance in Montreal! I ran this afternoon and it felt like a February evening! I lost some weight since last winter and I am now feeling the cold more bitterly than I remember.
Injinji all the way! They work great, especially for a marathon! With the toe socks, they do not slip, clump or cause other issues. No blisters ever! Great socks! You must try them!
Hey kofuzi, I’m a xc / track runner in 9th grade and I’m looking for some new running shoes. I was thinking of getting a pair for longer road runs, and a faster, tempo run pair of shoes. I’ve been running in the Pegasus turbo 2’s for about 3 months, and I was wondering if anyone has advice on which new shoes to get! Great videos!:)
Can you give a link to the jacket you’re wearing at 3:20? Looks mf clean
One year in the Darn Tough Vertex and they are truly tough. You are right they don’t look the part but they are still comfortable! Great video!
If i watch the news and they say you can get frostbite, i aint gonna go outside and run lol.
I’ve just been using Regular Nike socks when I run maybe I should give some proper socks a go
My most used socks is Salomon city trail. And you must try Compressport socks.
The longer the run goes on, the more socks matter. When I ran ultras, I obsessed over socks. For the marathon, socks are really important to me. Shorter distances, they matter less, but it’s remarkable how good a new pair of running socks feel on your feet.
My current favorite are Feetures. For long ultras, I used to wear Injinji with a pair of Wright socks over the top. Worked really well for me. Fun (random) running sock-related fact…I spent a couple of years in South Africa a long time ago and Balega running socks come from the Zulu verb ukubaleka, which means to run away (like to run to escape, as if you’re being chased). Random, I know, but when I first saw those socks, I recognized it right away…
Speaking of the feet, that is my biggest issue. Just this morning, my run was going very well. I wore trail runners because we have packed snow on the unplowed roads of the park. Most of it is plowed and salted and the snow roads don’t bother me. However, for the first time in my life, I did seriously end up with mild frost bite on all of my toes because I accidentally ran right into an ice covered puddle. The last mile, I slowly couldn’t feel my toes. So, I was able to get home after 5 miles (only in trouble the last mile 9-10 min. from contact w/water to home) and pull shoes, socks off and get into warm water. I could not feel them at all walking on my way to the shower. I am seriously thinking of Gortex treated trail runners. It’s no joke! BTW, I love merino wool everything! It has been a game changer for my winter runs. I truly enjoy daily runs, no matter the weather. I would try to budget water resistant/proof or Gortex trail runners. Close call! Happy running. I really enjoyed this video! Subbing to your channel now.
Am I the only one that dislikes low cut socks? I always get chaffing no matter what shoes I run in if i wear socks below my ankles, so weird
Thanks for this comprehensive review, have to admit I’ve never given my socks much thought and time and as a result never really felt I’ve got the right ones. Can’t beat personal recommendations from someone who puts a lot of miles in, great job!
Of course socks matter. I like feetures merino socks. I used to like smartwool, but their quality went down hill, from socks lasting 5 years to socks lasting 6 months.
i’ve run in injinji for the last few years (road & trail) and putting thme one is now super easy… guess i’ve just got used to them! and no blisters either. a great vid, may have to think about a part of stance (anton’s)
I swear you are so lucky that you get to experience the cold weather, Hawaii never gets cold lol
Oh and personally, I have mostly Feeture running socks just because that’s what the salesperson recommended. I’ve enjoyed them!
Aaah.. socks. Where to begin.. many socks will be awesome for the first few washes. But good socks are ones that feel great after loads of washes. Many get stiff and horrid. And… I am now completely against the anatomic ones with L and R.. when they were first introduced years ago, I thought.. cool. But now it is hassle. And I don’t think it is necessary. So I am another smartwool fan. Great after multiple washes and no L R specific (no more rummaging around in laundry trying to find the right match!). As for cushioning? I use smartwool light cushioning for easy or long days for extra comfort and ultra light for fast paced days
I love Lurbel socks for running and trail running. Bmax technology is awesome. Lurbel is a spanish brand
I feel for you folks in the midwest!!! I ran last night in a singlet and shorts and was still hot and humid:)
Stay warm my friend!!
Running socks are overrated in my opinion. I just use plain thin socks and I’m good there lol
god i needed this video. same weather here (toronto) and ive been freezing my ass off! its great that you’re using products that aren’t necessarily running brands… to avoid that skyhigh pricepoint where you can spend half a grand on a synthetic down jacket. kudos
I’ve been rocking Massdrops Fitzok. Also have some Balega that I like. I prefer socks without seams.
Have been using Falke socks. They are a little thick for our climate but very breathable and comfortable. But nice to see the new tech in socks. When you wear your Right socks do you know which is left or right…..lol?
Great vlog. What I do is I don’t use socks. I rub some vaseline on my feet and I go for a run.
Get feetures quarter PF socks if you really want the best.:)
I generally use Nike Elite cuschioned no-show/ Nike elite lightweight no-show especially in summer, sometimes nike elite quarter
Apparently, X-Socks are not very well-known in the US?! They’re the bomb, though. I’m particulary fond of the “Marathon Energy” model.
this is not a question for me. My feet develop blisters easily so socks is a must for me. Cotton ones are ok for 10K or 1 hour runs, but above that they cause blisters, so I go with running socks that are not cotton based.
On brands, I’m not too picky. As long as they’re not cotton they usually works fine for me. So I’m not buying those nikes, adidas, new balance etc socks, cause they’re expensive. I wear kalenji socks from decathlon. They have a wide variety of running socks, all works well. But my favourite kalenji socks are the ‘kalenji strap’ series, because they provide compression in the arches and ankles, but comfortable in the forefoot and toes areas, and different left-right. Highly recommended although they are quite thick. Kalenji have thinner ones also, which are comfortable, and compression socks up to calf height.
haha the real question truly is… how does one film b-roll for socks!? funny:) had a quick question btw any chance you could talk to us about why compression wraps for calves are useful? or why compression for even arms, like the way kipchoge wears them, are useful as well?
Haha is that your dog joining the video audio towards the end? Sighing and acknowledging in background.:-)
In my experience, once you try on a pair of athletic/running socks, it’s hard to go back. I used to get blisters a lot due but that’s no longer any issue. I really like nike elite lightweight, but they don’t last very long. Big toe had a hole within 3 months.
I use compression socks too, a random brand on Amazon called Eulay. My legs cramp up sometimes post-run, and they really help prevent that I think, not entirely sure haha.
In the past I used Falke socks, but some did not last very long, same to X-socks. I also have a pair of wright socks and like them a lot. In the last months I mainly used Asics socks which I quite like a lot. Recently socks with a higher leg and special colour design are very popular here (Germany). My favourite socks are now from Incylence.com, a new start up company from Germany, love their designs. Great vlog by the way.
Hands are my weak point too, I sometimes wear a singlet with gloves! Mittens are best but so awkward. Looking for a good glove right now…And checking out the Craft mittens. A fantastic running tight is from Garneau, Very warm and has a bit more structure so you can wear them sans shorts over top:)
By pure chance (chance meaning I had no clean socks this morning), I went for it without them on my Pegasus 35. I did notice better ventilation from the shoe that I found to be a little warm (I live in Panama, Panama, meaning a cool morning is 86-90 F) so I did enjoy the extra cooling but I could feel the friction on my insoles. This is the first time in 3 years of daily running that i go with no socks, and you just posted this about socks, conspiracy? By the way I use the cheapest compression socks from a Japanese brand called Miniso (I think Chinese posing for Japanese-Korean brand), 2 dollars a pair do the trick
Favorite shoe sock combo is Mizzuno Waveknit R2 (0.5 size smaller than normal), Balega ultralight Grey/white, yep socks very by color
Just run for fun, age 73, live in San Francisco, No heat, no extreme cold.
Higher state…………Meh……….No compression whatsoever. Decent casual sock but not enough compression for running
Hilly lite comfort………Bit better but still not enough compression. Okay for easy short runs
Of the ones you’ve reviewed i’m most impressed by the Stance ones. Didn’t want to buy into the hype at first “these are hipster socks not running socks” but they’re so soft with a very good level of compression and breathe so well. Just gotta make sure to get the “running 360 feel” ones not just the “training” ones.
For trail running Compressport, BV Sport and X-Socks make some very impressive highly technical socks
Really like the Nike Elite Lightweight 2.0 Quarter socks. A bit pricey but best sock for me. I wear Smartwool crew socks for trail running just for a little more protection from sharp sticks etc. on my ankles. Injiji toe socks are really nice as well but hard to get on…
Inov-8 all terrain are , nice cushion on the bottom and breathable on the upper, also come in low and mid sizes .
Balega enduro. Best fitting socks ever. Whoever disagree is wrong. Whoever agrees is a very nice person
i’m basic i haven’t try anything besides under armor, adidas, puma, nike.
Injinji are the best for me, I don’t buy any other brand now. Really comfortable and they have some great styles, a bit pricey though
As a soccer player, the only socks that produced a positive, significant change were TruSox. They absolutely lock your foot into your boots so that all motion is transferred directly from foot to boot to ball.
I tried TruSox as running socks and got horrible blisters.
I do really like Balega socks though for running. They are super soft, do not absorb moisture, padded where they need to be, mainly around the achilles, and thinner elsewhere to reduce bulk.
I’m all about the injini socks (unless it’s super cold, then I use a liner injini and warmer sock over). Love the individual toe protectionkeeps em cool and sweat-wicked!
1:44 lol! I need a “MAF TRAINING” t-shirt so I can pretend to be a fast runner holding back during my runs.
Great review! I love Inov8 spped socks https://www.inov-8.com/speed-sock-mid
Oddly enough, half my ‘running’ socks I use are cycling socks. Love the length of them and the brand La Passione are on point. Both the merino wool and polyester ones…the merino wool are by far my favorite ones.
And I second the comment that the you shouldn’t have to worry about socks on race day.
And speaking of worrying on race day, you should do a video on the not so glorious topic of personal care for a long race, i.e. chafing et al talk about ruining your race with something like that…
Balega and feetures are my favs. But 3 packs of saucony socks are more affordable. Darn Tough are fun, too.
Not one sock! But two socks! For a pound ladeees! Bargain!
But seriously, I find my feet feel different on different days and feel the need for different socks with different shoes and different run types and different distances vive la difference!
What’s your shop called and is there a link?
Smartwool. In different thicknesses and lengths for different workouts (thin for fast training, medium thick for regular days), no show/short for summer and long for winter. I love them because no faffing with L/R specific, but main reason because after a gazillion washes they are still soft to touch. Most socks get stiff or rough over time and no longer comfortable. But these last!
Used to never wear socks when I ran when I ran solely in vibrams but now that I’m running in more traditional shoes I just run in anything synthetic
For the TCA run pants, do you have any sizing suggestions? Reviews on Amazon tend to say they run small/tight.
Great videos, could be a good idea to ad metrics use un Latin america, some times is kind of weird understand F, miles and make convertions.
Try Injinji No-show running toe socks. i’ve been running in them for almost a year, love em.
Thanks so much for the awesome advice dude! I’m making a move this year from Cen. FL (not cold…) to the Smokies (very cold…), so I need all the help I can get here for this first “cold winter”. I can tell already mittens are gonna be on my list to buy—among other things! Really solid advice at the end there too, about not overdoing it…definitely gonna keep that in mind!
Thank you so much for the running pants suggestion. I love them but they are normally so expensive
I don’t recommend waterproof anything while running In winter you want water away from you skin o you will freeze you toes
Saucony Socks are the way to go for me. They have the best fit and support and feel snug. They also have a slight cushion on the bottom the makes it easier on the bottom of the foot.
nice one Loyd! Thank you. Really cool to also hear about manufacturers I’ve never heard of before “Stance” and “Cep”. My ultras I’ve used Injinji and no blisters, wet or dry, but always keen to mix it up a bit and will definitely look at your low-mid price socks for my everyday running. Be safe. Be Healthy. Keep running
Did you know that Anton wears a Loyd Purvis baseball hat?
Yo! Great insightsOne thing you didn’t mention and I thought you should check out, are these Craft undies equipped with Windstopper for battling chills in the southern area https://www.craftsportswear.com/B2C%20-%20Craft/all-products-7a58fca3/clothes/underwear/1904506-9999-c1373a4e/
Honestly if you’re spending $275 dollars on a pair of running shoes, getting stocks with better materials for like $20 dollars is a no brainer. You probably get more mileage in a sock than any of your vaporflys. I use stance run socks, look good feel good.
Great recommendations. Luckily it doesn’t get much colder than 0 C (33 F) here in Madrid so I very seldom need to bundle up for extreme weather. Buffs are awesome, I have about 6 all with different materials. Some polar fleeced ones for colder days and some lighter ones for everything in between.
I’ve found the secret is the base layer long sleeve top. I got a couple recently (on sale too!) and I usually just wear them with a t-shirt over and a lighter running sweater on top of that. That’s enough to get me through most runs here.
Recently splurged on a Gore Wear running jacket which is the most expensive items of clothing I own aside from my winter coat! I haven’t had the chance to use it yet which is actually a good thing. It probably won’t rain for ages now and it’ll just sit in my closet. But I’ll be ready when it does. Also bought some Gore Wear gloves and they are really great (a little pricey tho). They keep my hands warm and dry and I can keep them on during my entire run and never feel sweaty and clamy. I had some cheaper Nike gloves that I used for years but even on the coldest days I had to take them off after about 30 mins because my hands would get very hot and sweaty. Plus they never really kept my hands warm. Went from freezing to uncomfortably warm in like 5 mins.
Anyway, really appreciate the suggestions, especially the more reasonably priced stuff. Def gonna check out Craft and TCA gear.
Imo socks are important as are shoes. Team work is key, you wear lousy socks you won’t get that ‘feel’ to run/perform, unless for some who runs bare footed. I’m a novice marathon runner and play a lot of diiferent sports too, soccer, rugby, golf…I’ve used plenty of socks for my runs, my favourite at the moment are ‘feetures’ socks, they are seemless and really comfortable, have worn them for three ‘Full Maries’. Yes it’s partly psychological too. SJD fan from Thailand.
Love your videos generally. But specially love that you actually run in a cold city!! Gets a bit tiring listening to runners talk about cold running only to find out they live in California LOL I have routinely run in temperatures
20 / -30 / -40 Celcius and have moved back to that kind of winter weather this year; 53rd parallel north. I know Chicago is quite capable of reaching those temps at least some times:) What I have not done before is train in those sorts of temps and I’m doing Boston again in the spring, so it should be an interesting build. And I don’t do treadmills (there are days I wish I could but I just. can’t. do. it!:) ), although ‘speed work’ will be done on an indoor track. In any event, waterproof (e.g. goretex or shield) so windproof shoes are an absolute must for me, and a pair of shoes with ice spikes for the icy days after a thaw and refreeze. And I wear two pairs of socks, one of them double walled. I also wear gaiters to keep snow out of my shoes. On my hands I wear more than when I ski –usually a wickable base layer, fleece mittens and a goretex mitten outer shell. No matter what I’m layered with on legs and upper body, the final layer is a windproof shell a layer of ice usually forms on the penultimate layer under that wind breaker. Goggles, definitely. THE biggest challenge is mouth and nose coverings. No matter what I use and I have tried a lot of different combinations, ultimately it freezes over enough that getting enough air for the exertion becomes really annoying:) I’ve tried changing face coverings mid run but in deep freeze temps its just too dangerous to expose a sweaty face and head to those temps, so long runs can get cut short or broken into two parts so I can go home and change face gear. Your caution about monitoring one’s self in cold is excellent. I would add to watch for clothing creep that can expose skin by mistake (e.g. a hat rides up and ear lobes get exposed, or ankles where pants and socks stop meeting). That all said, on Sunday I did a run in shorts!!! A week earlier it was minus 18 C. Have fun out there!Seth, I have to disagree with you on this one. You’re essentially calling socks a placebo because you ran in cotton socks in the past. I did too until I found the likes of Balegas, Rockays, Salomon, and others. Socks make a huge difference depending on the type of weather, distance, surface, and pre-existing health conditions. I think you should do an update to this video and better explain the proper features of running socks and their benefits.
For cold-cold Michigan running my go-to has been Sporthill 3SP fabric pants and top (pass on the gloves though-too thin). They stop the wind and breathe well. Neither cheap nor lightweight, but will last many seasons. Face and feet become the limiting factor.
For trail running I find it really important to have a thinner sock that fits closer to the foot, thicker socks seem to move more and cause me blisters. I have plenty of good pairs, but my favourite pair are the Inov8 speed socks as they look great (especially with the Mudclaws) and never give me any blisters
After reading the comments I am tempted to try some Injinji socks…
Does anyone know if they are good for trail running?
what about Thorlo XCCU Experia socks?
definitely my favorites for running.
I have that same buff from road runner and love it! Haven’t been able to find it again
I run in Nike shoes only, but oddly enough I’ve found that Under Armour socks seem to be my favorite. Very durable, breathable and just the right amount of arch support/cushion.
Key for serious cold: wind-block undies (to wear underneath tights or running pants). Makes such an enormous difference!
I need something for black ice. Thinking of IceBug shoes but afraid of those studs..
any advice on socks that dont slip? my feet kinda slip to the front of the shoe and give me black toes.
How do you record your runs? As I your camera is always ahead of you while running.
As usual, another great video. Thank you! How do you keep from slipping/injuring yourself on ice when running in the winter?
I’ve definitely found that running in winter does have some wonderful bonuses on the shores of Lake Michigan (or any other large body of water I would have to assume). The sounds of cracking ice when it is frozen over and the views for example. I usually find that on normal winter days I can be very comfortable in a pair of insulated leggings and compression shirt then a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt over the top; after i get that first mile or two in I am up to a good operating temperature and it starts to feel like just another day.
However, on the really cold days I will put on a fleece hat and gloves… plus, i tape a disposable hand warmer to the front of my leggings for reasons I don’t think i need to mention…. or I throw in the towel and do very repetitive laps around the indoor track at the local high school and with any luck they sometimes have the bleachers out so I can hit the stairs.
I will definitely look into the balaclava though for myself and my son that is really getting into running.
Great video! Running socks AND how to tie the shoelaces are two highly underrated aspects of running!
Thank you for sharing!
Greetings from a new subscriber in Sweden
18:43 would suggest that wind boxers might be a better option for those really cold days. Helps a lot more than shorts in places a bit north of you (Ottawa), where the weather’s already been -25c/-13f + windchill. Great video.
Nike Dri-Fit socks have always been great for me. The cheap nike socks are garbage tho so you have to make sure you get the expensive ones.
Great sock review. Btw, u mentioned u primarily wear the calve sleeves for warmth… but have u heard of them actually helping for calf cramp prevention?.. for example at mile 18 of a marathon? Or if u had any anti-cramp tips, that would be super helpful. Thank you.
I got Balega socks for my first high end socks and I have to say I’m impressed
My favorites are Fitsok high quality, made in North Carolina. The F4 Tech is my go-to sock it breathes, channels moisture, and is fitted to left/right. At 3 for $25 I don’t find myself rationing them for later I just add another set to the running drawer. The CF2 Crew is a thicker sock, great for cooler runs.
Waterproof socks from seal skinz have been my first choice for years. Wind stopper is also pretty darn good for most situations.
I think winter has arrived earlier everywhere this year. I live in the Uk normally it’s very wet but still relatively mild. This year is definitely colder. .
Socks: If they are cheap and fit well I’m bying more of them, if they are REALLY cheap and don’t hurt my feet TOO bad I just might buy some more of them also. If they are expensive and feel great, oh boy, how can I justify bying more of them when I have all these cheap socks lying around that are perfectly not terrible.. The worst thing a sock can do is to have a big fat seam bunched up and digging into my toes. Got some Frank Shorter socks for free from a local sports store for my birthday, they were usable, and the price was right up my alley, that’s how I like my socks!! Some thinner wool socks have been awesome in the winter, not too warm, not too cold. I so wanted to buy some Injinji socks with a cool design on them, I’m sure I would feel a lot faster and more awesome while wearing them but I ended up paying my electricity bill instead. It didn’t make me feel so awesome at first, but when I watch other people finish ultras on youtube I feel like a champion, and I wouldn’t have access to the youtubez without paying that bill..
would you recommend a headlamp?
Also smart wool hats are worth the money
Darn Tough is a favorite of mine. I’ve run many of my last ultras in them and they’re great. I have found a new love for Stance though. The minor compression and fit are fantastic (and durability has been really good). I’m with you on Drymax. I’ll wear them, but I don’t love em.
I would highly recommend the Nike Snood. It is a soccer product but i have used it in a few long runs for conditioning in early cold morning. You should give it a try.
Tons of respect, I do not run in winter anymore. Specially living in Chicago. I just use the the spring/summer/fall month for training and racing
this guy have a GF, wife and/or kids?? Just curious how he finds all ths YT time. Cool.
Fav sock brand is balega so far. I like saucony too but not huge on all the synthetic compression stuff yet. I do like smartwool as well.
Stance is always going to be #1, makes them better when they have a hole in the toe too
Thanks for the recommendation on the TCA pants. I ran in them yesterday super comfortable and warm. When it gets colder I may layer them with tights.
Yesterday in NYC it wasn’t brutally cold but it was windy. What do you recommend for an outer layer wind resistant top. I’m contemplating getting an SJD style Salomon wind resistant jacket.
Merino is the way to go. Recommend Feetures Elite Merino or Smartwool. Icebreaker has great lifestyle socks, but don’t love them for running.
Sock talk talk socks! Merino wool, quick drying (for puddle jumpers) minimal odour, either Smart wool or Feetures. Everyone loves sock talk! Like a little hug for your feet.
Socks my favourite brands are two Australian company’s called Steigen and LeBent. Steigen make super light weight socks but they’re incredibly durable and comfortable.
I also love their blister free gaurantee, if you get blisters they will refund you.
And LeBent, I just found this company but they are basically better Stance socks, I only have one pair because they’re expensive but they’re amazing I think I’ll be getting these from now on.
Good luck Seth
This makes Scotland look tame, not sure about running on the edge of the water. Even when I wear waterproof socks I am trying my best to avoid unnecessary moisture in my feet. Buff is a great all year round flexible piece of gear. Winter as you described and summer on the head as a sweatband or protect the head from the sun. Carpe Diem
Weird idea but what do you think about rubbing on capsaicin topical cream (for muscle aches) on the arms and legs and core?
I’ve only ever run as low as single digits Fahrenheit, so it would have to be below 0 for a balaclava. A headband ends up getting taken off when it’s in the upper teens. A hat is great for single digits/ wind, etc. Hands are more vulnerable. Depends more on the wind if you need handwarmers in your mittens. 30 F and up=shorts; below 30F = leggings. Below 20F is a warmer long sleeve than the mesh/thin layer (which I like Marino wool for). again, cold wind or wet weather may change your choice even more than temperature. I love winter running, but find many people overdress and end up up overheating.
Quick mention of Nike Elite Cushion Quarter Socks. They are AFAIK the only quarter socks to have padding along the top of the sock which is fantastic at preventing extensor tendonitis (along with Lydiard lacing your shoes). Few different models but these are the ones I mean https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nike-Unisex-Adult-Cushion-Quarter/dp/B00LM3COUI
I used to swear by Pro Compression. I still like them but I really like my Injinji and Stance socks so I am thinking about getting some calf sleeves so I can get compression with the socks of my choice.
I havent been running for a while but here in Finland you end up running in the cold quite a while. Good hat and something all the way to your mouth in the beginning to warm up the air a bit. Gloves should be thin as you warm up during the run and it will get too hot. And good socks and shoes. On winter I have a different pair of shoes, Icebugs, and they are essential here. If there is enough snow you can probably manage with “normal” shoes, but when it is ice it is a must. They give you a lot of stability and safety. Seeing your video made me want to start to run again!:) Cheers
Using Hilly “twin skins” they say they prevent blisters, thus far I’d have to agree but can be awkward with the dual layer
This feels like the video I need right now. Love Stance socks but think I will try some inov-8 or CEP socks next. Longer socks always look so much cooler.
“Listen…socks are socks” lol very well put, I’m not a pro but I’m totally looking into running socks, right now I’m using some And 1’s from wally world
Great reviews as always. And I would like to try on the injinji toes socks as they look great for long run and able to prevent blister. Wonder how it really works as I always got wet feets and these socks are not cheap.
Still waiting for winter out here in California. Ran the Ventura Marathon 3 weeks ago and had plenty of warmth and sunshine. Thanks for the quality videos @kofuzi
I used to think Nike running socks are expensive but then I realized they usually go on sale at season end, and I was able to buy a few pairs at a bargain. But Balega socks, they are another level of expensive. Still, they are so comfortable that I would buy another one at a heartbeat.
It’s cooling off down here in Florida, I woke up to 64 degrees…brrrrr! it takes discipline to run up North!
Bought a new pair of Nike Shield Swift pants. Very tapered. Pockets big time and drawstring on the outside which’s very smart.
I much prefer the cooler temps for running but you’re right in that some days, despite my best efforts, it can just be too cold to run the distance I am targeting.
Good review of the cold gear. I agree with you, it sucks that you have to do this video so early in the fall. Lol
Smart wool PhD light weight cushioned. I run in these wool socks all year long. Yes, even in the summer. They are awesome!
Adding another vote for Injinjis, particularly the lightweight and ultra run models. Since I tried them last year, I can’t run in anything else. The feeling of natural splay from the sock is awesome. Blisters are a thing of the past and they make previously miserable rainy runs much more tolerable.
Is there a temperature that you consider too cold? My threshold temp is probably in the upper 50’s. Below that I’m on the treadmill.
Guys, i need some advice, I am looking into getting me some Darn Tough for the cold days, which model should I go with, preferably men’s crew or mid calf.
I am also looking for compression socks, for the colder days / winter any good ones to recommend?
Thanks in advance!
Was 19 degrees F. for my run this morning. Layers is definitely key. Balaclava I use is Nike. It seems to work good unless you wear glasses. Then you’re just going to fog up your lenses. Salomon and Nathan both have some good gloves out for different temperatures. I top it all off with a Salomon Bonattie pro jacket. I picked up the clear swimming goggles for when it’s not too bright. The wind and freezing Temps on your eyes really suck! Also, Nathan has a really nice thick hat out right now for night time running. It works really well at keeping in that heat and adds visibility for drivers. I usually run with my Salomon skin 12 vest just in case I need to take a layer off and for hydration. Winter running requires plenty of hydration and nutrition. So I usually bring a extra gel and some salt. Hopefully I won’t have to pull out the trail shoes for the ice. I hate the cold, but I hate running on treadmills more. Just make sure to get out of those clothes as soon as possible when you get home.
I’ve heard that we actually need more fluid intake during winter activities than we think. Do you think your buzzed feeling was a hydration issue?
I’ve struggled to find a compression sock that wears well with my running style as I tend to go through socks quick! The CEP Night Vision socks I have found to be fantastic, great compression, decal for night running and comfort. Highly recommend (be interesting to have a compression sock review)
Cat socks is the only socks i have used in everything, and they feel good haahahah maybe i need to discover a little!!
Hey, great list. Just found your channel and I’m really enjoying your content! Something you might want to experiment with is wearing Latex (or Nitrile) gloves under your other gloves or mittens. As you can imagine, it traps all the heat and keeps your hands nice and toasty (albeit, very sweaty). These gloves are much cheaper than hand warmers, so you’d be saving a little coin. This was something I learned when I was playing lacrosse in very cold temps, worked really well for me.
I want an socks too haha. Just kidding! This topic is what I need!
13:07 That slide was crazy. Glad you didn’t lose your balance. Also, how do you move forward with less traction?
9:40 I saw someone doing that today when going to the gym to run on the treadmill lol.
My favorites are Smartwool and Road runner socks! I also love Pro Compression marathon socks.
I’ve been wondering if socks make a difference, i always thought socks are socks. I just recently started running so i”m pretty new to this world
For cheaper socks I go with ASICS. I can usually find a 3 or 6 pack for relatively cheap. My favorite socks are dry max the run lite mesh no show.
What do you guys think of compression socks do you think they work?
Have been wearing only running socks for a couple of years now. with all shoes for work and running.
if u have a north face outlet near you try to stop in and look at some flight series stuff, been my favorite for everything from rain to mountains right now
