Strava now has great planning route functionality. It even gives you suggested routes if you tell it how far you want to run.
How come you never mention GarminConnect? I’ve found it to be amazing and it’s free.
The metronome app literally stops working after 5 seconds (every time) after you activate the metronome.
I use Endomondo. Got me from a couch potato to 3-5k 3x per week
Hi, The Run Experience running app sounds cool and I would love to try it now!
I am wondering when will it be intergrated into Garmin? Thanks!
So… nothing about the apps then? Just a sales pitch… reported for misleading content
hi buddy, i started with stave app at first then went over the nike run club, is there a way i can move my run details over to starve from NRC?
Many thanks
I use MapMyRun, with SecondsPro audio timer (which has cadence timing features ) running also. Usually, I catch a podcast in the background, and find that bone conduction headphones work great and allow me to be aware of my surroundings. The new app has many good features, but as others have said, I don’t usually want to watch a video for every session. Audio should be available, maybe for repeats of workouts or drills?
Bro running with the apple watch has been a game changer for me!
The dog was standing still like for two minutes and it creep me out
Hi, could share a review on apps dedicated for triathlon training that would support not only running, bike riding but also swimming (via smart bands, etc.)?
Nate, why are you giving us the finger in the thumbnail??
I’m suprised mapmyrun/mapmyride/myfitnesspal isn’t listed in this, I was under the impression that these were really popular aps
Im run with Nike run.. But this last updated is terrible… I will try to use strava…. rgds from Brazil
A great FREE alternative to Map My Run is My Routes Pro. It enables you to pre plan and map your routes and is easy to use. Lovin the channel, Gary
you want check the price of zwift. its gone up today! £12.99 in the UK now!!
Will look forward to trying it, especially when Strava link is there. Any ETA on that?
without subscription fees, most of the mentioned features are gone on strava.
I have tried Strava, but I always go back to Nike Run Club. Been using it for 10 years and all my runs are there. Plus the coaching and guided runs are top notch and free.
Can you pair up a foot pod on the Nike running app for indoor running and push the afterwork out result to Strava?
I use Endomondo and Sports Tracker together and have done for a few year’s. Both have benefits and aspects that aren’t quite so good. ST has a great Ghost Run map feature so can compare this with any previous as two dots that move round the route.
I really like Fitness22’s apps they have a couch to 5k and then a 5k pacer, 10k, 10k pacer… all the way up to marathon. Really simple, based on time but help you progress really well with three planned runs a week. Run Tempo is also good for putting on a 180 metronome for trying to keep a good cadence. And I would be lost without podcasts and Audible I need comedy podcasts to get through my runs!
I run with an Apple Watch with cellular paired to a Polar heart rate monitor. The native Apple Workout app provides accurate data, but no audio cues. The Asics Runkeeper app provides a good choice of audio cues, but other than total distance, total time, and average pace, the split times and elevation are significantly off. The split times are at least 10 seconds faster per mile, the elevation is more than 4x higher, and for a recent 8 mile run, I had an average cadence (which is usually accurate) of 336 steps/min! What’s even more annoying is that the splits and elevation viewed on an iPhone are different than those viewed on an iPad, which are more accurate, but still off, and they never sync. If you run with your phone, the data may be better. Nike Run Club provides accurate data and some audio cues, but it does not give heart rate cues. I like hearing my current bpm every half a mile, because when I’m too close to my max for too long, even though I feel fine, I know I’ll end up walking home…
I’m about 5’8 and weigh 185lbs. I haven’t been running in a while, but when I used this running app called “NRC” on my android phone today on my run. The app said I ran a 1.4miles in 8 minutes and 45 seconds. I suspect it’s wrong although I was fast.
Does anyone have any recommendations on an accurate running app?
Smartwatches with sensors help a bit. Beyond that, simple notebook suffices. The rest is for vanity and due to gadget addiction.
[EDIT] Just stopped on motivational cheers from gadget: how miserable one must be in order to need it?
Strava
The Run Experience
Charity Miles Every mile you run raises money for you’re nominated charity you select on the app. No brainer
Running Heroes You run earning points for freebies/ discounts on running gear/ clothes, events, competitions.
It is a subjective video. I see many people, including me, use Nike run club. It offers all this plus cool coaching. No reason to switch to Strava. I am surprised you don’t mention it
Correction: Strava & Trainingpeaks features mentioned are not free. Why not use Polar flow or Garmin Connect (as most have the watch and strap already anyway) and analyse with Goldencheetah? Ooops.., that’s freeware, no money to be made, i.e. GTN=not intrested. Or am I being cynical now?
Is there anything dietary that helps a runner? For more endurance and things like that
So much love from India because you are solving all my questions from last one week and that too without asking…lol..but its true
I remember stumbling across your YouTube channel a while back and thought your advice and tips were pretty practical. The catchy Coach Nate and his dog. Loved the videos.
Since those days the videos have gotten better. The variety of coaches has increased. And, the breath of training tips has really really advanced. You cover so many areas of running!!!
Thanks for all you service and effort in providing what I think is the best running YouTube channel out there. And I am sure the App will do great!!
One question, do you know a really good mapping app for tracking courses, and that syncs to a Garmin Vivoactive 3 watch? If you see this and have read this far, hoping for some good recommendations!!
Peace!!!
I agree with your view on Strava summit not being worth it. Have you ever tried Elevate for Strava? Its a free extension for Chrome in the chrome App Store(if you use that web browser) that can give more analysis from your strava data. If you are into that sort of deep digging into number?
Is Heather’s race number on the wall next to the bike from Ironman South African?
I’m watching from PE, the host city:D
Will the new app run where there is no data or wifi signal? I’ve never been able to get Strava to work for my favorite run. So far out of all the apps I’ve tried only MotionX-GPS works when away from urban signals.
Awesome video there becky . I hope you have a good week
I wish if there is apps shows me the best places to run in the city!
The Garmin app now has a function for women that tracks their cycle and makes training recommendations and insights according to where their hormones are at, as hormones can have a massive effect on energy levels etc. I only use garmin and strava, love strava Kat
Feel like Nike Run Club doesn’t track my distances properly. I do the same route every single day and feel like when I push hard, it counts my time and distance as HIGHER (avg time wise) even though it should actually reduce my avg time because I’m running harder and faster as opposed to other days when I am pushing myself less but my average time is somehow really good and doesn’t make sense.
Strava on the other hand counts my distance wayyy lower than Nike Run App. If I’ve done 7.5 km in Nike Run App, it shows as 5 in Strava, I’m just confused now.
Thanks for the ℹ️! Can you add awesome running music to your app based on run pace? I run at sub 7min mile pace and am always looking for good music to add to my runs. I haven’t found any playlist that doesn’t throw in slow music to throw off the good stuff.
ngl i always end up running further when i use zombies run, it’s the fear of letting my town down
What is the difference between starva vs. Fitbit when it comes to tracking?
Which one is more accurate, I find difference in pace and mileage when using Strava, like running 5k in NRC app is only 4.6 k in Strava???
I use the free Strava to track my trail Running climbs. Thanks for the great video!
Komoot recently had an update to the route planner where you can start from your current position. Meaning you enter let’s say 3h of riding and it spits out routes starting from your position. Previously you had to search through routes in your area and manually adapt them and see where you land distanceand time-wise. This is nothing short of amazing!
Locus Pro for android, maps where I’ve been and gives some useful stats
These are great suggestions for tracking outdoor runs. Do you have any recommends for tracking indoor runs (track/treadmill)? Strava doesn’t seem to like being indoors!
iSmoothRun is really good. it even includes a metronome and lots of audio cues while running. setting up an interval training could be i proved, it is powerful but a bit complicated.
Is running heroes available in the US? Searched it and can’t find it.
I like the idea of changing the beat of music to your candence, main reason why I don’t run with music is that when the beat is different to my candence I find it super irritating and makes feel awkward as I always want to run to the beat while body is not capable of that pace due to fatigue, so having heard this app function I might give running with music a try again, thanks for the info. Love the channel, one of the few I have notifications activated for
You really should have pointed out that MetroTimer is only available on Apple’s iOS, and given an option for everyone who uses Android. Not everyone has an iPhone!!!
GTN reeeealy needs to buy all of their presenters decent iPhone cases. Heather’s screen is always a hot mess, and now this. You’d think elite athletes would have sharper reflexes and better hand/eye coordination, but their phones look like they have drinking problems and/or were just dumped by text message.
Suprised no one has made a program you can enter pace, weekly milage and then weekly plan with all your selected run types (Long run, intervals, tempo) Then add another layer to make it better and increase milage by 10% built in. WHY HAS NO ONE DONE THIS?
Would it be possible to give some “run with me” videos, where you can run the whole hour with someone in treadmill, but in video the person run in forest or such?
What was that last app you mentioned? Weaverun? I remember conceptualizing and prototyping something like that back in the days, before smartphones:) I tested it on people doing exercise, driving, brushing their teeth, and a few other less interesting applications. I would love to try it but cant seem to find it. Please help! Thanks for the cool show:)
Zombies, Run is my favourite running app and the one I recommend to everyone who needs a bit of motivation to get started.
Sweatcoin is probably the only running app that I have that isn’t on your list.
I use strava for the segments, but endomondo is much easier to track your progress over time, a few quick clicks and you can go back years.
I use garmin to upload exactly the same data to each.
For free users, Google Fit is the best and decathlon coach is good
Is anybody else having trouble finding the Running Heroes app? I’m in the USA and use an iPhone.
Runkeeper! You can see your trajectory; includes more than one sport such as running, hiking, biking; can tell you the pace after X kms or Y minutes… Simply great!
been using nike since 2012. ilove their my coach feature for amateur runner’s training
All the runners i know have 1 thing in common, Strava. They also have some other apps aside from it like garmin connect, samsung running app, fitbit app… But we all compare and share our stats on Strava. You can link many ofbur other apps to it too
I can’t find my shoes (zoom fly 3) what would be the closest alternative? And are the guided runs on NRC free? Thanks and super helpful video
Are there any plans to make the app more accessible for those with limited vision? It’s proving too difficult to read the tiny grey text for me. The ability to improve contrast and increase font size is needed!
iSmoothRun is the best one imho. HeartRate Monitor + Strava Sync + modifiable workouts
I have only been using the Fitbit app for the last couple of years
I think it’s time to try something new that might help me “step” my running game up
for casual runner the app will not be of any help
for advanced: why would he need one (and the phone while running) when for sure he has a watch…
just saying 😉
liking and subscribing to hopefully help you buy a new TV and replace that monster you have behind you
My favourite running App? I’ve been using ‘A-Pair-of-Shoes-and-the-Open-Road’ all my life. Surprise Surprise, it really works! Highly recommended!
Which do apps for runners have an in voice coach to give you information while running?
Zwift just bumped the subscription to $14.99, but for current users they are locking in the $10 per month for a year.
Hilarious that this was released the same day that Zwift increased their prices.
Pace+, for min/km to km/h conversions, time prediction for a custom distance, split times based on custom race strategy, training paces, yasso 800, hr zones, BMI, calories, Cooper test, vo2max, units conversions, laces techniques
i am using the nike run club to track my miles and shoes and love it
the app Human, originated from the health question: are you getting 30 min of activity a day? By tracking the location and speed of the phone (data already produced by Google/Apple’s location feature) the app shows the total of minutes moved and where, as well as time per activity (walking, running, cycling), discarding everything above 30 km/h. That will be considered as non-active ‘transport’ (car, bus, train etc.), which I believe is everything above 30km/h… which is a pity for cycling:P )).
But the great thing, there are companies and stores using this to motivate customers to be active and provide them with a discount in return, based on the minutes moved:) Similar to Running Heroes, but including activity outside of logged training.
I usually go out for a run with Runtastic. Live tracking with cheerings from friends at home is the feature that motivates me most to go for the extra mile!
The guided runs with Coach Bennett on the Nike Run Club app are brilliant. In this time of not being able to run in groups to have someone talk you through your run and little hints and tips is great. I can set my own playlist and then he interrupts at key points to chivvy on and offer advice.
technically not an app, but the tapiriik website allows you to copy your workouts from one website to another. I used to like the endomondo app, much less of a battery hog than Strava. With tapiriik you can sync both websites. Nowadays I’m using my watch, but TomTom managed to break bluetooth so bad that I can’t even pair my watch anymore:/
“Easy” run with hill reps… 9.44km at 4:44 pace hahahahahaha easy hahahahahaha
A simple one that I use is Runzi…it’s one of a few that has a metronome…I’ll look into the 3 you mentioned Nate
Runtastic. Great app, I use it as a coach. The pro version is only 5€. I can do some interval training with it.
I need a running app that does not need WiFi
Do you have any in mind?
Any Samsung users… I have the gear s3 watch and Samsung phone, like many Strava for me but also Samsung health is really good for numbers and stats.
I use Garmin connect which auto loads to Strava.
How about Map My Run? That’s quite decent.
I’m using Garmin connect. The run experience app is legit but in my opinion it needs a audio only option for the run along work out.
Each app gives a differnet calculation, Nike Run Club or Strava give a different calculation of the distance run. Why is that? Explain on this….
I put a thumbs down on this video because it was about “our three favorite apps” though it just became a commercial for your own app. If you want to promote Ron app that’s fine though for me the video title is a misrepresentation for the advertising it became.
No, no, I search for another running application. I want an application where you can click on level 1-100. Level 1 is an old lady of 110 years old. You run against her on the screen and for example running 200 meters, if you run that faster than 1 minut, you can choose level 2 and so on. That would be an awesome application and I would get in shape in no time.
Hey guys, thanks for watching! Let me know in the comments below what is your favorite running app? One of these five? Or something else that we didn’t cover in this video?
