Bio: I’m a police officer & runner located in North Carolina.
As far as gloves go I have a trick I learned from an older school detective about 20 years ago.
Most cops don’t like to wear thick gloves for the lack of dexterity.
So….I typically wear thinner gloves for the not so cold days and for the freezing days. I wear a pair of nitrile gloves under my outer gloves. The nitrile gloves help keep the heat in.
Nitrile gloves….like the kind used in the medical field. Police officers uses them for searching nasty people and evidence collection.
Great video…..love me some buffs
hi Seth, might you help spread the word on this missing NY marathon runner from the UK? https://www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news/people/missing-east-sussex-man-fails-to-return-from-new-york-marathon-trip-1-9135566/amp
Best gloves ever: Arc’Teryx RHO merino glove liners. Never too hot or too cold.
My best purchase was the Garmin forerunner 30 watch because it made putting things on strava so much easier because before I had to carry a phone in my hand for runs
Thank you, Seth. I am from Brazil and this content is usefull for my trips to the north hemisphere
I run through winter in Stockholm. The rain gear is trickier than snow for me:) compression tall socks with tights + shorts, layers of long sleeve shirts on top and a tight hat/gloves (pretty thin actually) for sub 1h runs work well. Also a small backpack in case I need to take something off. Basically your setup is what works for me. I’ve tried mount-on spikes for shoes for urban/trail runs for quick on-off ability and messed up a few pair of shoes due to how tight the rubber gets around the front of shoe (rubbed through the mesh) so a dedicated pair for winter shoes is definitely worth it.
Seth, Altra’s 0 drop are too different of a 8-10mm drop shoe? I’ve heard about injuries when you going to a 0 drop too fast. Do you agree with this?
Nice video but where is the Panama hat?.. or is that part of the summer edition of Men’s Headwear?
gear
Probebly my watch with is huawei band 2 pro because i use it almost every run
about the sun glasses i recommand you to try the oakely jawbreaker they were expensive but now they cost about 100 dollars and you can find it even cheeper and they are just amazing and like the smiths they originaly disained for cycling and for cross country(cycling) spesific which means they have better fit and will not fall off easy
amazing video your are the best thank you for uploading every day!!!!
QD: I use 2 pair of gloves when it’s really cold. A light pair with a medium weight on top. After a few miles I take the light pair off. My running group does snowshoe running and racing. Seth have you ever tried snowshoe running? I heard Joe Gray does some training and racing in snowshoes. I just bought a pair, this will be my first year trying it out.
The Roll Recovery R8 was definitely my best purchase. Works so much better for me compared to foam rolling
Gear!
QOD: My favorite piece of gear was definitely my UD hydration vest. It no longer fits due to weight loss but it replaced the need for a backpack on hikes, and felt amazing during trail runs. I’m going to try the Salomon Sense vest or Advance Skin vests, I’ve heard so many great things about them
I almost died laughing when you put on the three opening black mask. NO SLURPPES FOR YOU”Brightened my day a bit. Gonna have to get one of those.
The best piece of gear I picked up in 2018 was the Garmin forerunner 620. For a long time I didn’t really take tracking my miles very seriously and I would just use the smartphone app. The Garmin was a game changer when it came to motivation and the freedom to get out the door with just the essentials.
Someone needs to tell this dude how to properly wear a beanie.
Favorite Gear of 2018: My Salomon Adv Skin 12 Set Black Hydration Vest. This fits like a glove and no bouncing when running and what sold me most was all the front pockets for my nutrition. I upgraded from the Nathan VaporKrar 12L due to the front pocket storage was very minimal.
Gear. I actually bought these in 2017….but my AirPods are by far my favorite.
I bought a snapback at mango outlet and I think it was the final nail in the coffin of me wearing hats. I think it just doesn’t really work for me. It makes me look way too you and I feel like all of them are way too big for me, even the small ones.
Still, tho, I’ll try to get used to it and see how it goes
Gear, qd: the best thing I bought has to be my garmin watch it was expensive but it was great and still is. Also I am wondering how can you live with the fact that you are improving alot but you need time to get to the top, its been 4 month since I started running when I started I ran a 22’08 5k on flat track and now I do long runs on easy HR of 153 10k in 40’10, but the thing is its a fact I am improving alot I just cant stand I am still far away from my max potential.
My favorite purchase was the CEP Compression socks. They are very comfortable and I haven’t had to take time off from an injury after purchasing them.
docker hat looks like Chinese hats. Goku and Gohan’s hat when they were kid.
Gear! QD: The Outdoor Research Helium II jacket has been one of my best gear purchases in 2018. It’s packable, lightweight and keeps me dry on those rainy pnw days. It’s also a great jacket on those days where it’s too warm to wear a heavier jacket and to cold to go without.
Make a videos about indian fashion big fan of your work keep working hard luv from india
I live for the newsboy cap it’s one of my all time favorites

I don’t agree with Mario, Marcel. You always rock your outfit. I love the way you experiment with your outfits. I follow them and I get compliments from women and from my male co workers. It’s far from street style but you revolutionizing fashion in each way.
Awesome, this morning I was running and it´s still warm here in Florida, and humidity is between 70 to 93% so you know that means: pouring sweat. I have a headband but now that I saw yours, the Halo Headband I´ll purchase it when I can. Thanks Seth.
After appearing here (not sure how this appeared in my recommended), I have to say that your content is wonderful. Though I’m not a runner, I can’t help but feel invigorated by what you discuss! Might get me into it ;), regardless of my preference though I really hope you can make it big, and I’ll be sure to let some of my more running-apt friends to know about this channel.
Will the waterproof lone peak 4s be good for running on snowy trails in Easter Wyoming? Similar to Colorado
Garmin forerunner 230 and it helped sooo much with not having to carry my phone on my runs and it would just transfer my results to the Garmin app
The problem that I have with the watch is that I don’t have the heart rate monitor and I need to buy a strap that goes around my chest
I love you love you love you man!!!! You redefined my life through clothes. Even though I have a minimalist kind of guy. Speaking of, I’m waiting for those fall minimal outfits. love you man. Shoutout from Paris, France.
Favorite running gear are the Eastbay 9” Compression Track Shorts. $18 bucks. Great value and performs well
Got a second hand garmin fr630 in January just when i was starting my running journey. Probably my favourite running gear.
And also ciele athletics hat to keep sweat off my eyes in this crazy weather.
From Singapore btw.
Couple of things not yet mentioned:
1. Vaseline or bag balm on exposed skin and areas that chaff easily.
2. Sunglasses of course if sun and snow but consider tape on the lenses to create slits to see through.
3. Why run when you can cross country ski? Will really build your vo2 max and guarantee if done right you won’t get cold
Good info thanks as always
QD: Salomon race vest. I’ve wore it for every run just because it’s so comfortable and I can carry all my essentials. Love it!
It’s the wind that bothers me, cold and rain I can deal with but the wind is a nightmare
Full on fan boy moment. That energy and passion you, True Love, and those kids have inspires. This video has helped me more than I can say. Chloe (my little doggo) and I thank you. Mike from WI.
For your hands I can recommend merino wool under gloves and then normal gloves on top of that. The top gloves can vary in thickness depending on the weather.
Flip-top mittens always help me balance the temperature for my hands. I have a thin pair and a fleece lined pair for very cold days. I periodically cover and uncover my fingertips during a run.
In Chicago Fri. AM it’s 18* icy cold cloudy below normal November!.. brrrr
Uh, let’s not forget about preventing the dreaded COCKSICLE.
QD: trail shoes like the Nike Peagasus 36 Trail or the Zoom Terra Kiger are really good for running on pavement in cities that aren’t that good at shoveling off snow
LONE PEAK 4.5!!! I can’t wait to hear what you think of them. I ran my first 50k, in October, in the Lone Peak 4.0. GREAT SHOE!!!
I’m from Puerto Rico but been in S. Fl. For 4 1/2 years. Soon we we’ll be moving to Missouri. This video is my orientation for running in the winter! Thanks!
QD: 1. Sheet metal screws rather than special shoes. Makes any shoe ice ready. 2. Base thin poly, merino wool if second layer, then insulated outer with smooth face to shed wind. 3. Merino wool socks always. Merino still insulates when damp. 4. Bonus merino wool boxer keeps your trunk warm. 5. Always cover ears / neck.
I need help with hands. I have never found a single glove that keeps my fingers from FREEZING!!! HELP!!:) Live in Colorado, btw
Living in Carman, Manitoba where we can get some frigid weather and the snow stays all winter, sometimes I use those hot paws. Those things that generate heat when you break them and put them in your mitts.
In winter I wear a long sleeve base layer and then a sleeveless cycling vest over it. That way, I can stow my gloves, hat, etc in the back pocket of the vest if I need to take them off.
Great timely video. I am pretty much on a similar schedule just beginning a new training cycle. I also love the Salomon running cap and just got a new blue one for Christmas. QD: In 2018 the most significant running purchase I made was I changed my nutrition supplements after never really finding anything that worked consistently for me. I was introduced to a brand at a race that is popular with the triathloners and have been super happy with the products from F2C Nutrition. https://f2cnutrition.com My second most significant purchase was a new Garmin watch after using a Fitbit was certainly a nice addition to my gear.
When will you restock the marigold Saturday sneaker? My size is the only one sold out lol
I think the best think I paid for was race registrations and a gym membership. Also the 4 pair of running shoes and the awesome running shirts…
My favorite gear purchase of 2018 was the Stryd footpod for 3 reasons: it allows me to train at specific intensities regardless of the weather or terrain, it is as good as or better than GPS for measuring pace/distance, and it produces some interesting other metrics for analyzing my technique.

As a mechanic I have pretty much worked out in the cold every day.
Plastic bags between layers of socks could help someone survive any cold.
here from Alaska, pretty cold up here no snow where im at but getting below 32F and in deep winter it will be below zero
Seth I stumbled onto this race in Northern California its the Silicon half marathon its in the end of April super fast course. Run on
You need glittens. Gloves and mittens combined. You can open them up if you get warm and close them when you get cold. It’s better at conserving heat than gloves. There are good options on amazon.
Wish you would do videos on hair too, you should focus on hair too
Now you mention it! Outfit inspiration for each hat, please!
I’m from Maine and am used to running in teen temps and sometimes below zero. Find a good and somewhat thick running jacket that is breathable. Usually run with a long sleeve under that.
Polar M430 GPS watch/heart rate monitoring so informative and useful. I’ve just found and ordered the dark blue Fast Wing Hybrid jacket for $50 (still on Amazon) so looking forward to that!
What fabrics go into your garments? I’m a huge proponent of Merino Wool; nearly 100% of all of my clothes (other than pants) are merino wool. What are your thoughts? I can’t imagine wearing cotton, especially for activities, as the sweat involved would require washing my garments after every 1-2 uses. You can go many wears with merino wool without washing, which is good for the environment.
Get mitts (fingers together) instead of gloves (fingers separated). They can be thinner because the fingers will warm each other as needed.
Hey Seth! Not sure if you’ll see this, but in terms of keeping hands warm. I run with a pair of jack rabbit gloves with an attached mitten covering. They do the trick. I’ve been lucky with them running in Chicago winters. When it’s really cold out I pull the mitten attachment over the fingers and can even tuck my thumb in a little bit to create a nice pocket of warmth. And when my fingers start to over heat I can tuck away the mitten cover on the back of my hands and give my fingers some more beathability. They stay warm even then! Here’s a link, they’re on sale now too. (By the way, thank you for great content. Love your videos)

Dude, Smartwool glove liners are awesome for keeping your hands warm. I have had mine for years and love them. I haven’t used them in sub 10 degrees though.
QD: My favorite running gear is split between 3 things.
1. Nike split shorts
I used to wear basketball shorts so these are so light compared to them.
2. Nike Pegasus 35
Helped me get through xc and hopefully track season
3. Saucony Endorphin 2 & Carrera xc 3
Spikes I wore for club track and school xc.
I love running in a vest during the winter months! Smartwool has some great options.
Gear… not just one piece but, a few..R8 roll recovery, saucony and Solomon trail shoes(winter and summer), AirPods and a hydration vest. I just purchased yesterday the Garmin 645 so hopefully that will be my favourite for 2019!! ugh… running is not cheap (my hubby reminds me of this all the time ).
your shous clascton i very like but i dont abblel in my contrey i very sad….
QD: Seth, did you call that tube thing for your head a ‘buck’? I wear mine the same way but with just the visor on top. If it’s above 20, I usually don’t wear gloves. I’ve got alligator arms so I just pull my sleeves over my hands until they get too warm. The Salomon Speed Cross lugs are a little aggressive for my winter trail / road mix. I just got a pair of Brooks Cascade GTX’s. Just wore them today in 15 degrees with thin wool socks. They’ve got smaller lugs for the trail but are fine on slick roads too. They’re lighter than the Salomon’s. A big advantage of the GORE-TEX is not only water proof but more importantly wind proof.
I had to watch this just for the sake of laughing at it I’m sitting here in Minnesota I take my dog on a walk at 20 below in what she recommended wearing for 20 above
Love my Altra Lone Peaks! Favorite trail shoes. My best winter weather tip is to be sure to hydrate well before and after.
Snowshoe running really helps and somehow actually gets me fast for races from 800 on track to road marathons. Ran a 15:05 5k off mostly snowshoe running one winter.
Yeah I was checking out that headlamp it’s pretty sweet, I run in the woods in the dark so I were a headlamp to, 90% of my Run are at night time. Oh no you lost your glasses. Yeah I wear glasses too, I can’t do without glasses in the summer. Great gear review. And also I wear bright green too. Time to get pumped. Lol the best gear I bought for 2018 was definitely the massage stick. I can’t believe I went without it for so long.
I love the gloves of the decathlon they are fingergloves with a thermo part you can put on to protect for the wind and when your hands get warm you can put it off again. https://www.decathlon.nl/p/handschoenen-evolutiv-by-night-zwart-met-ingewerkte-wanten/_/R-p-X8556459?mc=8556459&c=ZWART
Gloves: inov8 waterproof mitts OMG! PLUS they have an elastic band you put around your wrist and if you need them off they won’t get lost.
Still watching this video even though I live in Los Angeles The coldest mornings here are about 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit. So I get to wear my “winter” gear which is a long sleeved shirt (Nike Pro Hyperwarm) and thicker leggings.
Pleade make a video about indian guy fashion.. And I’ve been appreciated you for so long… Keep grossing.. Love ya
Without some kind of beard or longer hair, I personally find that headwear makes you look like a little boy.
Gear / Qod: my favorite was a packable Patagonia windbreaker. I bought a lot of 6 Patagonia coats / jackets for $100 off of a guy on eBay in May (there was a nano puff in the lot that I resold by itself for $140) and I kept one of the others. It’s an older one, very lightweight but water repellent and full zip front. I sometimes have a hard time finding gear that fits well and this one is like a glove!
I live in the Hudson valley in New york so we get pretty chilly up here. I have a 3 glove system. Once I start to want gloves on early morning runs, I have a pair of Craftsman mechanics gloves. (Like most mechanics gloves) when those start to become not enough, I have a heavier “winterized” version of the craftsman mechanics gloves. Just thicker, softer and warmer. I’ll wear those a good but through the winter. When it’s really cold, single digits and below, I wear Burton snowboarding gloves. They have a pocket for a hand warmers if I feel the need, are really lightweight, and I love the drawstring “collar” that snugs up over your shirt/jacket sleeve. They even have a soft Velcro patch on the thumb to deal with a cold runny nose. Anyway this is my current system that works very well for me. Good luck!
I use light gloves ( Craft ) that have a pocket on the top with a liner that can cover the fingers like a mitten. Works very well for me, I live in N Ohio.
Guys, if someone is wondering where is his denim shirt from it’s from uniqlo and it’s pretty cool:)

I do a lot of winter uphill running, and i am debating on buying salomon slab speed 2 or salomon speedcros 5..i am liking the grip that speedcross 5 is ofering but i am not fan of heavy shoes..my question for you is:is s lab speed 2 even close to speedcross 5 in grip area?becouse if they are i would prefer them, and if they are not i would must stick with speedcrosses
Hi BRO i’m Nido from the Philippines and your new subscriber too =) Honestly, my family and friends says that: any hats that u wear, will not work for you! =( I learned so many things about HATS, this interesting and stylish video HELPED ME A LOT YUP, i am a BUSINESSMAN and i only have ONE HAT, OAKLEY. Anyways it WORKS for me now, YES!!! THANKS BRO, your pieces of advice works for me! CHEERS BRO
GOD BLESS / nido
@sethjamesdemoor What tracking watches do you use? I currently have the fitbit charge 3 but thinking about changing to garmin vivoactive 3
This is really disapponting. Abs trash. There’s no style snd definitely no style
No fitted hat for you. News boy hat is cool. Docker hat looks like a sushi guy hat.
QOTD; ok, as author of “THE WINTER ATHLETE” (Johnson Press) here’s feeble Ilg’s #1 winter running tip; a plastic grocery store bag! yup…. It’s actually a cycling trick for long cold mountain descents yet no winter runner should leave home without one! Simply pull out and place next to the skin in front of the chest if it gets windy and/or cold suddenly and it creates a mini wind-breaking sauna! Can’t beat the price, either! A real life-saver…or at least hypothermia-saver! Great vid, Seth!
hats can sometimes make a challenge when styling them with other clothes, can you make a video to show that (specially fedoras)
Can you show us some fashion style with attires brought from street plzzz.
Love ur work dude..
I really don’t feel bucket hat..
But if you like it go for it
QD: If it’s below 10°F I wear “the third sock” (applicable for men only). It’s truly a life saver!
How much did you pay YouTube to put you as “creator on the rise” lmaoooo your channel is dead fam
I totally recommend waterproof socks for running in the winter.

Fun Fact I live in Singapore and some years ago i took part a local night half marathon, around half way point I ran alongside with an American, I will never forget what he said to me, “I don’t know how you guys run in such humidity, and we are running in the night!”
So many fast races in California, go USA running to find the best one for you. Run on
Top Gear Of My 2018:

I chopped off my hair and now I’m doing a video about hats. Enjoyed the video, Sir!
QOD: My GPS watch was for sure my best acquisition in 2018, previous to that i was running with my smartphone, but nothing compares with a gps watch and all the metrics that can give you. I probably replace with a better one in the begining of 2019.
2:56 the iconic Marcel Floruss cap haha btw I love the fit of your shirt!
Does anyone have experience running with barefoot/minimal shoes during winter? I have no problem running in 40 F (4 C)temperature with wet and muddy autumn conditions, but since last week when night cold got under 30 F (-2 C) the black ice has been a huge problem. Any advice?
Great video!Ive recently have been making running videos and I would love if y’all could give me some constructive criticism so I can get better at making videos! Happy new year!
Winter running gear tips from Cal gary. Not as extreme here as you think Seth 😉
Yes it can get very cold here, but we also get warm chinook winds that can mean almost summer temperatures in January and February. Plus, in the community where I live, the path system is cleared well, so I never need to use anything on my feet more extreme than my regular running shoes. No grip issues there.
Dealing with the cold for me depends on time of year and the direction of the temperature movement. If it is fall and this is the first day below zero celsius (36 F) then I will dress much differently than if it is February and warming up to zero. There is an adjustment period and as I get used to cold temperatures, I can where less clothing at -5 C after a spell of -20 C than I can if it was +10 C in the past few weeks and now has dipped to -5C.
As for specific clothing. My main focus is keeping the core warm. Layers matter. I always have a running t-shirt as a base layer and then a light running fleece over that. Next would be a light rain jacket, a running warm up jacket (or soccer or rugby warm up jacket), a ski vest, or a full ski jacket depending on what the weather requires. The full ski jacket wouldn’t make an appearance until below -10 or -15 C.
For my head, it depends. I don’t like neck tubes or balaclavas. I do not like how my breath freezes around the edges of those and I tend to keep any coverings away from my face. I make sure that my fleece is zipped up around my neck or that I have a high collar on my jacket that I can duck my chin into. If it is below -5 C, I will wear a toque (ski cap I think you call them down there). I have one from the MLS team that I follow that I don’t mind getting sweaty.
For my hands, I use a light pair of spring ski gloves (lighter than regular ski gloves and designed for skiing in warmer spring temps). Cross-country ski gloves are also a good option. The light ones that cross-country ski racers use are well designed to regulate your hand temperature while enduring a hard aerobic workout. I find my hands stay a perfect temperature with this option.
For legs, I stick to compression tights with a pair of running shorts over top. As it gets colder, I switch to a thicker running/yoga short from lululemon. The material is a bit thick and helps with core warmth in the nether regions of the core. Below -15 C, I would add looser running pants over my compression tights.
If it gets too extreme here, there are a few indoor, non-treadmill options around here. A couple of local hockey rinks have indoor tracks and there is an indoor soccer centre that has a 250 m indoor track close by. I usually save the indoor days for below -20 or -25 C (depending on how motivated I am feeling) or when there is a bad blizzard with cold temps and high wind.
Other than that, I try to stick to running outside as much as I can.
Gear
Qd:my favorite gear this year which I recently purchased is the merino 10 feetures socks, they’re ultralight, they work in the cold and warm. They also prevent my blisters which is a bid thing because I am very blister prone.
You mentioned headlamps, but didn’t go over them in detail. Would love to hear your recommendations for these during the dark winter months.
Hats can sometimes make a whole outfit, so I wanted to show you guys some headwear that I have in rotation for this fall and hopefully inspire you to try some new styles. What kind of headwear do you wear?
Don’t forget to follow me on http://www.instagram.com/marcelfloruss/
Apart from my GPS watch which really helped improve my overall fitness level, my two favorite pieces of gear from this past year are my Injinji socks and my Plantronics BackBeat Fit headphones. The socks are great for wearing with my Hokas on longer runs, especially in the warmer months when my feet sweat more, to keep my toes from blistering. The BackBeat Fit are just a great pair of wireless headphones with good sound quality and a practical style at a really good comparative price.
My toes Love my Altra’s! I’m a road runner though:D Escalante’s and Paradigms.
I wish my gym had one of those stretching devices. So foreign to me don’t even know the name!
Looks very very useful though
Halo Headband is a lifesaver! It save me from all the hassles of taking my glasses off and wiping away sweat while I am running! Also I love Flipbelt not just for its function but its style, as I can put in my cellphone and other emergency items, and still pretend it is a wide belt not a waist bag:)
And here i thought you’re about to cover a sick song after seeing the thumbnail of this video
I also love Petzel, I wear mine every early morning run to see and be seen. Your advice on a hat and sunglasses is spot on, but I would like to mention sunscreen. One major skin cancer risk is long distance running. the hat is crucial, but so is a thick layer of spf 30 sunscreen on all exposed areas. Garmin 235. Love it.
Don’t risk your life running/walking where there is ice.I was walking on a dirt path that had snow that iced over. Before I knew it I slipped and hit the back of my head on the ice.I thought I was a goner.
Use this time for planning or weight training ect.
QoD: its allways better to freeze for 5 minutes when running, then become warm, rather than putting on to much clothes because you dont wanna freeze. Dont be warm when standing still, you will start sweating, and sweating when its freezing outside (like on the forehead etc)… Not much fun! When I was in the Army in Kirkenes in Norway (search where that is, you will feel sorry for me lol), we only used 1 jacket on our upper body when we where marching!
Easy to find gloves for the 0 degrees celcius temps and above. Check out pearl izumi pro Amfib lobster gloves for the bitter cold.
Qotdmy under armour infared coldgear face masks save me and loving having waterproof trail shoes so far this winter. I love my lone peak 4.0 rsm mids for winter casual wear.
Do you ever run in snowshoes? I live in Vermont and we have a lot of snowshoe races I might get into this year.
If you are afraid of being stuck in the mountain than you also need to take a whistle:)
QD: If its really cold i would do tshirt, longsleeve, half zip and jacket. I would also do halftights and high compression socks under long tights
For that Salomon hat, is the lime green on the back sold separately?
Suunto spartan is the best gear ever, you can compare with garmin
QD:Garmin Fenix 3 refurbished-so happy i saved my money for it made a huge difference in my running and pace
Mine was either my Salomon Skin Pro 10L or my Garmin Vivoactive 3 Music. Thanks for the vid. Need some recovery sandals!
Do you need the halo if your hat would wick sweat away? And do you need sunglasses if the hat blocks most of rays? I have all three and typically use one at a time. Maybe I’m missing out?!
Great video once again!
Can you leave links to the hats you had in the video?
QOD: I wear wool socks and/or mittens instead of gloves. Keeping fingers together keeps them much warmer than separated, as with gloves. I usually cut a thumb hole in the socks for dexterity and ease of operating a GoPro or phone. MUCH warmer than gloves, and we DO have extreme winters in Silverton, CO (often sub-zero and many times colder than -20). Seth, I also NEVER run a a treadmill! Kudos!
Hello! Ever tried Yaktrax pro? Very handy during winter runs or trails. Good luck during your “summer “ championship next week!
the last hat is a big no no from me. just get a mini fisherman beanie and dad hats > flat baseball hats
Gear. I only bought shoes this year. Though, my new Altra MT Kings are awesome. I’ve been running in the Altra Superiors and Lone Peaks for the last few years and love the change. Going back, my favourite gear in a while is the VaporKrar hydration belt. Lots of stretchy pockets, soft flask and it sits nicely on my hips (it’s hard finding a waist pack that sits still on a woman’s body.)
Gear! My Suunto Spartan Trainer, Salomon cap, 4 dollar Kalenji running belt, & armband blinker has been my essential items so far for road running. The only thing lacking now is a recovery/rehydration drink that I’m looking out for.
QD: I’ve got 5 items that I would be lost without.
1. Honey Stingers hands down, the best fuel source I’ve found for marathon running. Great gel. Goes down easy. Tastes like honey. Simple fix.
2. Saucony Fastwitch 8 my racing shoe for the entirety of 2018. A 5.9oz flat with actual traction and stability. Honestly best shoe I’ve ever worn.
3. Squirrels Nut Butter you will never chafe again.
4. Nathan 16 oz handheld water bottle. With a zipper pocket that can fit keys and gels. This saved me on long runs. An absolute necessity for summer long runs.
5. Brooks Compression Shorts these worked really well during races, and they even provided a bit of relief from swishy shorts that chafe. Was definitely my marathon race short of choice.
Bonus: The Strassburg Sockthis singelhandedly saved me from plantar faciitis.
Naked waist belt, this an awesome piece of kit for a few extra items. Check it out you won’t regret it
Excuse my ignorance, but what does ‘QD’ mean? I am seeing many people start their comments with this.
I am relatively new to the channel, so apologies if its a dumb question ❓
The coldest temp I’ve run in is -23F. The run was fine but afterwards it felt like my bones were frozen and could not warm up.
iam from Pakistan and iam big fan of your work and keep it up and your every vedio is outstanding great job
Hand warmers inside the gloves can be helpful on those extreme cold days
My favorite running gear has been an insulated water bottle for after those hot runs. I got a couple hydroflasks.
I also got a Garmin forerunner 235 and love that.
Favorite new piece of gear, the Kogalla RA Adventure Light, this light is the bomb! If you run at night, especially on trails, it doesn’t get better then this.
Thanks Seth! I’ll be picking up that foot log for sure. Feetures socks and Goodr sunglasses were my favorite items this year!
Gear. Great idea with the green hat. You never know. Great video. God bless.
Nice gear for winter trail running seth
Here in philippines the coldest run I experienced was at 22 degrees celcius
Sir seth i have a favor can you shout out me in your next video hehe
Absolutely love your content. Definitely official now you are my #1 youtuber!
Would love for your inspiration / ideas on how to rock the ‘urban lumberjack’ look!?
Gear: The Stick and a foam roller, both travel size to easily pack to races. I never paid much attention to stretching or injury prevention, until this year, that is.
Underwear is key! I use an Odlo underwear shirt when it freezes, and a craft thermal shirt with integrated windstopper if there’s a cold wind on top. The advantage is that they stick nicely to your body and keep it dry. A dry body is key for staying warm. Pretty expensive, but been using them for 10+ years and they never dissapointed me.
If it’s too cold, like I do this when it gets around -5 to -20 F, put Vaseline all over your face, especially ears, nose, and cheekbones. It breaks the wind and stops them from drying out and makes your face much warmer.
I waited in this video, when H&M captain cap comes, finally video got over
My favorite peace of running gear for 2018 is the New Balance under wear, great to go under your tights. Run on
QD: when windly apply duct tape to front of pants to protect myself espically for guys
QOD: Adidas half rim pro sunglasses. I’m from Singapore so its heat training everyday. Those sunglasses come with an in built sweat bar and as the name suggests, its half rim meaning the frame doesn’t block the ground. Hearing what you have been talking about, I think they may suit you.
Also has the adjustable nose piece just like your Smith sunglasses and also adjustable parts at the temple.
You already have the deep blue so order the peppermint Oil from Doterra… rub it on feet, hands and deep inhale… your feet and hands won’t get cold and your nose won’t run!
When he said he draws the line at 22° I expected him to say he runs on a treadmill, but no that’s just when he wears an extra t-shirt. I need to step my game up!
The green hat is great. It also helps you stay visible on the road, too. No Leki poles?
This isn’t anything new, but Gu Rocktaine drink mix changed my nutrition set up on really long runs. All those calories and caffeine in a single water bottle blew my mind.
One I’m most excited about is the Ultimate Direction HardRocker hydration vest. I haven’t had a chance to test this gear out yet since I only got it about a week ago.
Altra Torin 3.5 that I bought last January, best running shoe I have ever used. Ugly as all get out, but nothing beats that kind of comfort.
Gloves: my favorite are the Manzella silkweight gore windstoppers. I don’t overheat, but they keep the wind at bay
I don’t run with much gear but in July and August when is super hot and humid in Toronto I run with my bright and range Nike running belt to stay hydrated
Oh boy, this is a tricky one, I just bought way too much gear in 2018 to pick just one…:). I discovered the Nathan handheld bottles this year and I loved them, my absolute favourite is the SpeedDraw Plus Insulated Flask. Some handhelds tend to move around or shift, but not this one. It’s super steady, keeps the water cool and has a nice pocket for some keys,…
I also bought some caps from Ciele, which in my opninion make the best running caps ever + they look super good. I almost always run with a hat of some sort, I feel naked without them and I have probably bought 5 or 6 Ciele caps in 2018, epic stuff!
And last both certainly not least: The quiver for poles from Salomon. It’s not that expensive and it is an absolute gamechanger to carry poles. Super easy access, they are not in the way and easy to attach or remove from my Salomon vest.
I’m curious as to what 2019 will bring…:)
anyone send me your address if you would like some free musick cds
I use Body Glide (anti-chaffing) on my face for those cold windy blustery days. It really helps prevent wind-burnt cheeks!
In order to be found in the mountains in case of an accident I think it’s better to use orange color clothes! Happy new year!
Perfect timing on this video, up near Ottawa, Ontario it’s dark early and cold basically until race day in may, thanks Seth!
Grand forks ND here, this was a pretty useful vlog. Will definitely run on the treadmill when it gets -30 though.
I want those Hoka sandals. Sadly they’re only available in two sizes and starting at 65.99…crazy pricey!
I went back n forth all year between them and oofos, so I guess I you can say I snoozed and looozed.
the garmin forerunner 735xt has been my favorite peace of gear.
Great suggestions Seth! My magic number is 45F. 45F is shorts and Tshirt. Colder 45F long sleeve shirt. 40F light sweats or tights with my wind breaker jacket. I wear a baseball style cap year round. 45F switches to a light stocking hat.
Light gloves at.. Yep.. 45F.
0F I bring out my facemask and heavier North Face gloves.
Happy Running from Green Bay Wisconsin. Currently 8 inches of snow on the ground!!!
Has anyone heard of frozen lung? If you are running in really cold weather and breathing hard it can happen. And it can cause damage or kill you.
Just bought a Petzel Nao with my Christmas pennies. It’s awesome

She: Why are you wearing a hat?
Me: I am too sexy for my hair thats why it isnt there!
My favourite piece of gear for 2018 was definitely the garmin forerunner 235. It’s nice to run without a phone…
Just what I needed as I looked for a headlamp, Petzel Nao……Favorite Gear 2018: VP 4% Flyknit!!!! BTW, talked to a “progressive” PT here at work regarding PF. She said, PF is symptom. Mostly caused by tight calves and hamstrings or other issues up-the-chain of muscles. Doing things to foot just treats (and hopefully helps relieve!!!) the symptom temporarily, but will not the resolve problem. My wife still suffering but new calf stretches are seeming to helping.
My favorite running gear purchases of 2018 are Million Mile Light V2 for running safe in city in the dark. https://flipbelt.com/million-mile-light and couple of my all time favorite running socks More Mile London. https://www.startfitness.co.uk/more-mile-london-5-pack-mens-running-socks-mm2342.html
I love Altra. They are just the most comfortable running shoes in the world.
I live in the west of Germany an we don’t have a lot of snow days. So I don’t want to spend money on shoes I use one week in a year. Waterproof socks or putting tape on the “vent holes” of your shoes is my cheap solution. So you can run every shoe all year long.
When you mentioned training in St. Louis, you spoke directly to my heart!! I fell in love with everything Altra this year. I can’t run without that zero drop anymore. Love your videos! Keep up the great work! Also, the EDC from Ultimate Direction is an honourable mention. Can grab and go with it so quickly when I’m fitting a run in!
QD: Move to South Texas. I typically go to the beach on Christmas day.
Seth, I just got a text from Salazar. He says you need to lose weight.
Amazing video as always, love how experimantal you are.
Ps: Where is that cardigan from. lovvve itttt.
I love running in the cold. like single digits. yes all the gear slows you down, but darn it makes you feel alive.
Key Advice as multi-decade winter runner: Layers. You get hot? Take a layer off. Also, face mask or balaclava. Most often overlooked is covering the face in extreme cold.
Going back and watching some old stuff. Quality stuff as always! Nice to see the shoedio evolution!
I thought it was my Solomonsense 5-set hydration pack, but that was last Christmas. No special gear this yearGod I need to treat myself. Trail shoes original Salomon sense pro. HAPPY NEW YEAR
No new hardware gear, however two athletic performance enhancers (not banned): Beet Elite beet root crystals drink mix for nitric oxide boost = better endurance (been using 3 years now…it works for me, plus it has electrolytes so good pre race) in 2018 started using Topical Edge Sodium Bicarbonate lotion now know as AmpHP Performance Recovery lotion after hard long workouts, HM races, back to back races, DOMs significantly reduced. Note: placebo effect could be at work…if so, I’m willing to keep shelling out the dough for both!
I’m still confused while using head-wears after this video. My favorite (and safest) item is snap-back. Believe me, my friends call me “the walking egg” when wearing beanies So probably i’m waiting for a beanies outfit video from you. Thanks.
Holy cow 40°?? You can almost fry egg on the hood of a car in that temperature… Oh wait, those units…
