#Torqueback What does it really take to be a Grand Tour winner?
Give away the short-fingered gloves then haha
Congrats with the baby and best of luck!
I sometimes use my mechanix mpact tactical gloves for bike rides. Recently just ordered the TG Hellfox fingerless gloves. Based on the designs, how in/efficient are they for bike riding?

Headset caps, seat mount clips, even skewers can be bought in a variety of colours, if you want to freshen up the look of your bike without spending much…
I don’t like this posh kid. His voice is annoying. Get rid of him.
Nice. I’ll have to try them. I like to save a piece of old bar tape when I rewrap to add extra cushion for my road bike.
I have the same gloves I use on my Segways and SE-3’s also. I love them. I bought them at Bill’s Bike Shop in Camarillo.
Is it ok to wear your home country’s olympic jersey when on a ride? I know its not really ok to wear team kits if you weren’t on the team, but hey…its the olympics:)
You should always wear gloves/mitts when riding, training or not. How else are you going to maintain your cycling tan lines?
Great Q & A! All my best on the day you both welcome your new little cycling fanatic to the world!
Here in India, we only have rains during the monsoon season, so I can take off my mudguards for the rest of the year!:D
Never short finger. No gloves or full finger are the only acceptable options.
Really like the photographic set up for this video. You front, your lady pregnant in the back.
#torqueback any guide to select power meter, top 5, power meter recommendations to beginner. What is difference between left leg power meter and both legs power meter types?
Hi Jasper, love your videos. I am a light weight rider and only really excel on hills and climbs. However most races near where I live are crit races. What should I do? Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, good luck.
Can never beat a nice pair of socks! A fresh set looks good on and off the bike! #sockdoping
YEP..long finger gloves all day..i sweat so much “fat American”!!!.:D that if i dont wear full finger i just slip all over my grips..off road,on road,etc..full finger all day!
#torqueback Tell us what bottle cage models you like to use the most.
What do I have to to to keep up with phill this October for the cookie fondo!!!
I’m 160 lbs and train with heart rate monitor.
Has there ever been a dead heat in a stage of the Tour de France? #Torqueback
So I just crashed an hour ago and was happy that I wore gloves, also I think my backpack helped to absorb some of the energy as i rolled, seeing as I managed to only be left with some minor scratches after a crash with a car at 35 km/h!Seeing as I am a pro crasher… what should I look at my bike for damage after a crash? #torqueback
I don’t mind the wet ass. I don’t feel it at all, but my colleagues at work don’t agree having me walk around like that.
Also, WD40 returns.
Hey Jasper, wishing you and your family a healthy child birth!! Looking forward to seeing pics of the new fanatic!
So cool of Daisy to help you out with the q&a. Hope everything goes perfect with the baby. Congrats you guys!
Guys, what happens to the unused pro kits from all of the races each year? Seems like a lot of kit to throw away. #Torqueback
How about a “SAVE 10W” gift card or a “ADD 15W POWER” gift card?
#TorqueBack what are some of the best pieces of kit to bring on your basic ride and does the kit change for cyclocross or mountain biking?
Got to say that lights definitely have to be the smartest upgrade on the list there. A good pair of lights and a some full mudguards will totally transform your winter/summer rides so that your safer and more comfortable! Good little video there and thanks for those top 10 items. Certainly the handlebar tape is the cheapest way to always make your bike more pro or just to make it a bit more unique. Thanks for this one guys!
We Are cyclists. We spend silly money for things we dont need ffs…
Question: is Erik de Vlaemenck any relation to Roger de Vlaemenck?
Weird. When I do indoor, I’m so focused, I don’t struggle at all with the trainer. Outside… lots of distractions. Cars, kids, wind, sounds.

It’s actually a good idea knowing how to crash, or in martial arts, how to fall or take a throw. It’s definitely something that a person would need to learn and practice since it’s an unnatural body reaction.
I have never come across a decent smartphone holder. The one in this video is especially awfull and bad designed just for looks.
No water proofing, no powerbank, no protection of flying stones, no protection in case of crash, NO THANK YOU.
And never use your actual phone. Always buy a cheap used one. If anything goes wrong you wouldn’t mind.
#Torqueback Once you put a new chain on your road bike, how long (distance is probably more relevant), before you lube it. At that point, should you completely remove the original lube or just clean & apply lube of choice?
Don’t use Latex tube on carbon clincher(rim brake)!!
Brake heat bursts the tube.
the GCN products are really hard to buy in China: ( [like the ass saver which I really needed]
Here In Los Angeles on the bike paths, Saturday looks like freeway traffic with skateboarders, cyclists, and pedestrians. Here’s some tips: I choose my volume based on my speed, and try to use a tone of voice that doesn’t panic other cyclists. I use the form ‘pass left’ because it gives both intent and direction. Make sure your hands are on the brakes and speak clearly, calmly, and firmly with enough time to evaluate and react, watching for riders who wobble. If my closing speed is high, I say ‘pass left in 5,4,3,2,now’ to give more warning as I approach and avoid startling inexperienced riders. Most riders will thank you if it’s clear safety is your intent.
#torqueback. I’m quite happy using my current Sora 3400 group-set (11-32) and don’t seem to notice missing out on any gears and my times for segments are still coming down but with the price drop of the Ultergra 6800 to about £400 it has me looking in their direction. I get that there is a few hundred grams difference in weight and the brakes are considerably better but How can i decide if i need the extra 3 gears? Or am i just getting sucked into the “keeping up with the Jones’ mentality”?
Cheers
Hi Adam, I ride a mountain bike about a year now. the palms of my hands are starting to hurt all the time. I do not wear gloves. What would be a good pair of gloves to help reduce this pain. thank you and i really liked your video.
I love cycling but I’m not about to acquire a power meter anytime soon. How then can I improve my FTP. What does an FTP workout look like?
How do you video yourself when riding? How is your camera mounted?
My wife treated me to a surprise GNC TDF t-shirt today! If only she’d waited a few extra days until after your economy collapsed, we could’ve saved so much on the exchange rate.
Why the hell are you so obsessed with socks and games?
If you’re worried about your socks then you really do just need to get out and ride more
Wearing gloves is a must…how else am I to wipe my runny nose in the cold?
If a rider has a double nationality, can he/she compete in two different national championships? #torqueback
I had a crash two weeks ago, I was riding along happy as larry, the next split second I was on the deck. It’s similar when I had a motor bike crash. So no, in my experience, for me, I have no time to think about doing anything, I just hit the deck and wait for the pain to kick in.
#torqueback #SockGame Proper woolen kilt socks with 3 inch fold-over. Topping out 2 inches below the knee for me but then again I am a Hairy Scotsman that rides all weathers Offroad XC, DH and Mud-Blasting in Scotland.. Style is a very low priority grin Keep up the good work Folks!
But with gloves its alot much more grip expecialy when ur on the hoods and ur heands and everything is swety.. it sometimes feel like u could slip of ur hoods:(
How to crash? I tried the tuck and roll technique as a teen going over the bars on a rutted steep off road descent I landed squarely on the side of my shoulder and broke my collar bone. Since riding road I’ve crashed a couple of times due to tram lines and over exuberance and taken skin off my palms both times (should have worn gloves) but have managed to keep my head off the ground saving the expense of a new lid but my knee and elbow have taken the brunt resulting in steri strips but also saving my Lycra and my bike
I got two squeaky dinosaurs on my handlebars. then I won state. I think they had something to do with it
What is the brand of that handlebar mount please??? Thank you.
I always trie to warn ppl.. i like to say dzin dzin.. whitch in my countrie is humeanmade sound for bike bell:D
Crashing. Judo training? Learn how to fall safely. I know it’s different with a bike between your legs, but must help.
Aftermarket wheel skewers, bottle cages and chain catchers give a good bang for the buck in terms of looks, functionality and weight reduction. What more??
I’ll volunteer for the crash video because I am new to cycling but have fallen more than 10 times and haven’t broken anything……….. yet.
Best question was easily the one on how to crash! I spent 2 weeks in Army Airborne School learning how to fall. Something to think about.
I’ve grown to like Hank a lot but wit that voice, I will always think he’s only a bawhair from joining Made In Chelsea!
Mirror I saw another guy with one (fits into end of my drop bar) and now I can’t imagine riding without one. They are cheap and a real safety accessory. I am also finding buffs to be very useful as a lightweight adjustable hat for early winter (Canada).
I got me a carbon seatpost and saddle from china really cheap, not bad, saves some weight:)
Is better buying the cheapest Zipp (brand) wheels or some non-brand wheels for same price?
I’ve been cycling for a few years now. Recently got a fat tire bike which I absolutely love. Added a large mem foam seat for my lower back problems (Spondylolisthesis). The only issue I have is hands going numb (I do about 5-6 miles, a couple times a week. Been searching for good gloves that will help the numbness. Thanks for the “scienc-eey” info
2:25 No flash/strobe lights! It’s really irritating. Only steady lights.
#torqueback when is the best time of year to buy a new bike? Thanks
Hello, I’m a 14 year old cyclist (road), any specific training tips and lengths for people my age?
yes! I need gloves for my mountain because I ride constantly and the amount of calyces on my hand is,well, there are alot.
Probably not invented yet, because I cannot find it a true thermos (vacuum flask) that fits right into bottle cage. There are some “almost” the right size, but “almost” makes a difference. This would be my number #2 (just after Buff).
I wear gloves to keep my hands from going numb. Training for a 100 mile ride my hands started getting numb at different times. Now I wear the all the time. Plus I have had couple spills and the glove was torn not my hand.
Just below main calf bulge. You need a very good reason to deviate from white, and black is never acceptable.
How does a latex inner tube reduce rolling resistance? I mean, the tyre is the point of contact so how does the material of the tube affect this? I’m not questioning it, I just don’t understand.
I have triban100 roadbike I want to go faster but I don’t. Please tell some instructions to increase my speed
#Torqueback where is the Ballis located on a bike and can it be removed to make the bike lighter, afterall I’m not a GC rider and could do without it.
#torqueback cadence or heart rate? I want to get a bit more training out of my commute and can’t afford a powermeter (and I’m not at that sort of level). Would it be worth investing in a cadence meter or heart rate monitor or just stick to trying to improve my overall time?
Where is the Tyler Vegan cyclist? I am sure you seen Chad the goat up there.
Do you have any others you’d add to this list? Let us know below.
I think i have a larger man-crush on James rather Opie now!
Is Erik de Vlaeminck king of Paris-Roubaix or his younger brother Roger de Vleaminck? You said that at 7 minutes from this video! You said Erik but it is Rogier. Do I get any goodies for discovering your mistake?
#torqueback I’m about to take my bike to the alps for the first time next month. Since I live in a very flat area (Berlin) with no long climbs available I wonder if there is a good way to prepare? Thanks!
recently completed a London to Paris charity cycle. 300 miles in four days. had to find a dark place on a few climbs but I had a lot of the tips from here in my head so thank you very much! Got the road bike bug now.
Head lights, tail lights, signal lights, rear view mirrors, horns, steering damper, and aftermarket exhaust..
#TorqueBack The seatpost, at least how many centimetres has to be inside the frame?
Omg, those airy gripgrab gloves, never knew about them until now! thanks. Hope the baby comes soon and becomes a cycling fanatic!
#askgcanything Hi guys, do you have any tips for commuting in a city full of tram tracks? Except not riding right into them:-) Thanks!

Question: Would a latex inner tube save watts on an indoor wheel-on type trainer?
I agree with Specialized being the best out there, but I quit wearing gloves because:
a.) the few crashes I’ve had did nothing to protect them (just acted like another layer of skin vs pavement).
b.) I live in an extreme arid climate at altitude, therefore sweat doesn’t have a chance to puddle and circumvent bar grip (evaporation).
c.) gloves tend to promote overgripping (as in golf), and the stressors of riding long will build tougher hands.
d.) I’m an excellent snot rocket launcher, so there’s no need for the backside of a glove AKA “nose tissue”
Also, cycling creates some pretty funny looking tan lines… why add to it? But, since we’re all an experiment of one, do what suits your riding genre, right?
I studied how to crash from skateboard videos on crashing and it saved me when I crashed at 30 mph.
When climbing when should you start changing to easier gears? Should I push a bigger gear as long as possible and only change when it becomes too hard or should I change earlier and spin an easier gear?
Absolutely loving the comical side of this… Great stuff!!!
Was bever sure why saddle bags were controversial. You neverforget spares, because they’re on the bike permanently!
I tend to leave emergency cash in there too, just in case i run out of food or water and am miles from home.
is the commute app u mentioned on android? i cant find it on play store
Cycle and walking paths/tracks in oz have “warn when passing” signs. Yes they are shared but I have been in my zone on the bike and had faster riders buzz me without warning causing surprise and me to wobble and potentially knock us both off. So I would rather have fair warning. Then it comes down to etiquette. If I warn that I’m passing I would consider it bad form of the rider in front then sped up.
Bought a rigid mesh saddle from ebay china. Delivered for less that £5. Light and comfy. Also no danger of it getting full of water as it can’t get a rip.
What happens to the bikes the pros use after each tour or race, are they kept by the pros, sold or recycled? If you know of any spare ones I’ll gladly give them a good home.
My palms get sweaty immediately and gloves keep me in control esp on drop bars
#askgcn what is your opinion on clored bike chain lube is it worth it?
If you’re getting less watts indoors try using a bigger fan.
Real cyclists commute by bike, year round in all conditions carrying all manner of stuff. A removable seat cover makes the difference between getting on a wet saddle or not, it can be stowed under the seat and then used if the seat is already wet.
Full mudguards can’t be beaten, with that silly flap to keep your feet dry (and warm). It helps to have a bike that has eyelets, so winter training bike is required. Journey times are quicker if you can ride through any puddles, streams or gutters without having to slow down or make manoeuvres that place you in danger from cars.
High visibility clothing is also cheap, cheerful and excellent bang for buck. There are plenty of cyclists wearing black from head to toe with the assumption that some Chinese polystyrene badly strapped to their head provides them with all the safety they need. Actually it is best to not get hit in the first place. So high visibility clothing works for the winter riding, new hi-viz actually works whereas the stuff already owned is faded. Another advantage of hi viz is that it can keep you warm too, an extra layer to keep the chill off. Note that hi-viz has to contrast with something, so that light green isn’t that visible in a concrete world, or even a grey-green winter world. You need to have orange with contrasting black for it to work in dusk or daylight. There is a performance benefit in knowing that you can be seen as you can ride more assertively.
well i been using the same helmet for 5 years and i don’t intent to buy another one unless i really need to.
#torqueback
hi GCN.. what shall I do to build a new peak? I peaked between april and may (PR on 30 min at 360 watts in early May). I have raced a lot on sundays in may/early june doing only easy sessions in the week. I now feel my high intensity is pretty much gone as it is aerobic resistance for long periods… As a result of my easy weeks I feel pretty rested (TSB reached an historic high of alomst 30!!) and also I feel I have lost a lot from stopping doing training during the week (even the 1h turbo session of specific workout)
What shall I do now if I want to have a new peak for late July/August? Shall I start a new 4 weeks build period?
Is it possible to peak twice in a year?
Cheers guys, hope this question makes sense and that it is interesting enough:-)
P.S. Keep going!! You rule!!!
Hey man!! I ride at my MTB bike had an kinda offroad tyres its pretty much good for my country but my best at that tyres while riding is 30 kilometers
What to do to add more kilometres???
I’d love a phone mount option but where I live it’s almost always either too hot or too cold for the phone to be exposed. I hate having my phone shut down in the middle of my ride. Likewise, I’ve often wondered if those super expensive onboard cycling computers suffer the same fate as my phone. Twice in the past week with temps hovering near 40° F my phone shut down. I can be a long way from home with little chance of help nearby and have mechanical problems or worse. I need my phone to work so it has to stay in an inside pocket.
#TORQUEBACK #askGCNanything
Why is so important a recovery ride? And in what it consists in?
#torqueback Just got my first bike and want to know how I can improve my stamina. I tire easily. Any helpful tips guys?
Recently bought my first road bike, now looking at cycling clothing… which turns it is quite expensive!!! What is the best clothing to buy and where is the cheapest stuff! Thanks, love the vids guys!!
Mate, I’m with you, i always wear long fingered gloves no matter the weather…..i hate short fingered gloves
Those Anker Earbuds are great. Great sound and bass and they stay in your ears! Sweatproof!
Hey GCN. What speed are the pros doing when they cross the finish line in a high speed sprint? Sagan etc… My first year cycling since I was 14.
I didn’t know I was crashing until halfway through it. I wish there were a way to anticipate my reaction, lol
Totally agree on the white bar tape. Looks so good for the first five minutes!
It is me or Simon said that Erick De Vlaeminck was “Mr. Paris-Roubaix”? Last time I checked, “Mr. Paris-Roubaix” was Erick’s brother, Roger, who won the Hell of The North 4 times. Erick won the cross world championship 7 times, but I think he never rode Paris-Roubaix

I couldn’t hear the name of the app that he mentioned for commuting. What was it called?
#TorqueBack Hello. Sometimes I have to stop on steep hills, but then I have a real trouble clipping back in. So I go back down a bit, clip, then turn around and continue climbing. Can Matt advise on how to avoid this?
I like to Use A mirror when cycling on my own to catch a glimpse what’s behind what type would you recommend
Hi GCN. When is the best time of day to train, in terms of improving fitness?
You have to be PRETTY foolish not to wear gloves when you ride a bike! Your hands are the first things to try to break the fall!! Then, when your hands are fucked up,you can’t do anything!!
I hope that you are not riding your bike with a bike cap, or with anything other than a decent helmet. Just falling off a bike standing still and hitting your head is enough force to crack your skull.
#torqueback do you think with the UCI might one day implement team salary caps? With the strength and talent of some better funded teams it would level the playing field. It would be great to see more top level domestiques to be leaders. Case in point, Porte vs. Froome in the TdF..
James has become a really fantastic presenter. He fits in perfectly and seems like a generally great guy. Keep up the good work!
I’ve never been passed in my life. Today I had trouble catching a motorised bike.
My sweaty hands slipped off the bars one day. Wasn’t pretty.
Been wearing gloves since then.
Please us the Queen’s (not Trump’s) English..
It is ARSE not ASS cheers!
Poor James, he crashes a lot and now has a gun pointed to his head so he’d put WD40 at the top of this list.
James… Casquette not the most fashionable thing… what on earth are you talking about…? they rock! Although there is nothing worse than turning up somewhere to see someone else wearing the same casquette as you…:P (I love mine…)
Which type of gripgrap is the seethrough version that you are wearing during races?
I like the long finger gloves! I’m a Massage Therapist so I wear long finger gloves all the time to protect my fingers/hands in case of a crash!
Could one of u do like atleast 20km timetrial with average over 40kmh? I looked at my local segment and i saw few number above 40.. and thaught.. well thats some slipstreamers ther for shure.. but as it turned out it was ITT race there and those were individual speeds.. 44kmh for 24 km:0
Try this style glove:

Just had a crash 2 weeks ago, I was wearing short finger gloves, so my left hand got mangled in the crash. Now I only wear long finger gloves for that small but meaningful protection.

I read somewhere that if you ride with only one bidon you should carry it in the seat tube cage not the down tube for the best aero effect. If this is true why has Dave Brailsford overlooked this marginal gain.
Sorry to piggy back but do not buy anything from BikeDescent. They sell crap which is overpriced and are impossible to contact. The BikeDescent website is basically a device to rip us off.
Extra thumbs up for James helping his grandmother install apps. Top rate guy, and quite the good presenter.
I wear gloves because I have carpal tunnel and with gloves it seems to absorb vibration and I have less numbness.
the only reason I would wear gloves is not to shred them if I crash. but I don’t since rash is the most minor thing from a crash. although my hands get really sweaty I manage just fine and get a better feel for the bike and the road. I feel more in control of my bike and now weird tan lines. legs shorts and jersey tan lines are enough for me.
Never buy latex tubes, lightweight butyl is cheaper, lighter and way more punchture resistent
GCN should have a weekly episode about budget or best value upgrade, bikes and accessories it will help consumers to choose and save money
Handlebar mount far cheaper on @lixpress…then again everything is!
#Torqueback. Hey GCN I have purchased my first pair of clipless pedals ( Shimano Ultegra) and I was wondering if it is bad for the pedals to pull up when going onto a side walk. Also when I sprint I pull up on the pedals and at times the back wheel can lift off the ground, and way to prevent this?
I don’t really get how latex inner tubes reduces rolling resistance? Can somenone elaborate on this?
#torqueback Do you have any tips to remove a bolt with a stripped head?
I was going pretty fast down some trails when I hit an obstacle and got flung across to the other side. I actually had enough time to remember to tuck and roll as to not injure myself too much. It’s crazy what adrenaline can do
#torqueback GCN, can I use my hockey helmet for cycling (or any other helmet)? It fits really really well.
Congrats, new dad, I only have one question. what are these gloves you speak of and why would I ever need them to ride a bicycle?
i definitely getting benefit of training on single speed bike for a month now.. Flats, short or not very steep climbs.. Cranks are also short.. 165.. I feel very good comfort from that and when i switch to standard road bike with 172.5 mm.. My cadence is dropping and have the feel of unnecessary stress on my legs.. Maybe i need a shorter cranks? (177 cm height)
After running on shared cycle paths where cyclists pass way too close, I always say “Passing” as I approach slower cyclists and pedestrians
Thanks for answering, in many cases is a matter to be used to and familliar as me for instance with long socks (I was a long distance runner always wearing long socks to avoid vein system problems and fasten blood circulation)
Si I’ve crashed on my face and broken my collar bone too in separate crashes, I got back on the bike sooner after landing on my face, have we been doing it wrong all these years? #torqueback
I’m asking for a bike wax lube kit, can someone help me and tell me witch one is recommended?
Do you think the eetop and eenut from eecycleworks would be a safe way to reduce the weight of my bike?
Do you now know more about cycling from creating content for GCN than you did as a pro-riders?
But Simon what do you say when someone passes you? I usually just curse.
Would you mind telling me some of the free apps you talked about again? Thanks
#Torqueback Always OUT-PEDALING my bike on a straight & downhill. IE: When getting to 30mph I want to go faster but can’t as no tension on chain! Can you please say what I need to do. Thanks, Steve
What is the brand of that specific phone holder? Looks universal, something I have trouble with having a niche phone
Was bever sure why saddle bags were controversial. You neverforget spares, because they’re on the bike permanently!
I tend to leave emergency cash in there too, just in case i run out of food or water and am miles from home.
Don’t forget about that popcan on the backtire to make it sound like a motorcycle!
He starts actually answering the question about the gloves at 9:03
Agree with #1. Strava changed my cycling life. Maybe even saved it. For free! Though I’m now a summit member and IMO it’s totally worth it.
I too am going to advocate judo as a great place to learn to fall. You don’t have time to think about crashing so you reaction needs ‘pre-programming’. But yes, don’t stick your arms out. You cannot hope to push the ground out of the way. Admittedly tarmac is less preferable than a soft judo mat and having a bike between your legs complicates matters but it still seemed to really help me. I’ve been known to be seen running after my still crashing bike having executed a perfect roll!
Hi GCN..could u give explanation about sprocket & chainring intercnageable? right now I am stuck with changing my sprocket ratios, and its compatibility with the capacity of RDs model (SS/GS/etc)…
Always funny to hear a Brit try to say “ass” when he really wants to say “arse”. Honestly the company needs to do a UK version and call it “ArseSaver” just to help out these poor people. How hard can it be? That said I highly endorse the Ass Saver. Mine has saved my arse on numerous damp days. (As a Canadian I get to have it both ways.)
I like that new ass saver accessory the most. But most people probably won’t buy it. If your going to ride in wet conditions long enough to get to work all that stuff is a waste of time.
James is the upcoming kid! He is only going better and better!
Gloves help reduce the pain from the vibrations of having a stiff bike, I forgot my gloves once… never again.
Bar end plugs, headset caps, coloured outer cables and bells (yes, I’m serious, Spurcycle bells (and “similar” bells sold by others) can be super cool even on a road bike).
What does the GCN headquarters look like? Always have been curious! #torqueback
phones apps are not free, they collect your data incl gps and resell for marketing and tracking
