love the avalanche line 2yrs ago when they were around $500 now they re $750+ and CHEAPER aggressor replaces it with cheap shitty tourney parts:( l should ve got the yr end clearance at $450 GRRRR
Hey suggest me a full suspention bike under 600 dollar in india
You could probs pick up a used full sus with better spec for 600
I have a ’98 Avalanche that I bought new and still ride today!
These bikes are shit dont buy!!! they are waste of money they will fall apart, Look a Seths Bike Hacks youtube video about a good beginner bike
i’m really not a hardtail kinda guy, i like my $3k bikes. but i can really see the appeal of something like this. it makes riding a good bike for a good price an option which isn’t easily turned down which makes the sport more available for the masses which is nothing less than amazing.
this was a really good video and that trail sounds like an amazing way of trying out new bikes to see if you like them.
Re the 1 X 10 gearing….how many of the highest and lowest cogs on the cassette?
The first bike was a fricken ridged bike or no suspension yet they say all terrain? this would get destroyed on a downhill trail and it would hurt or kill the rider!
I had a haro that I got back in 2013 and would ride trails on it a lot. I loved that bike but somebody stole it last summer. Good video, was excited to see the haro on here!
I work for RTD lol. If I see you I’ll definitely say hello. Great video!
Not sure if I agree with this list, but that’s what’s great about YouTube. I will say I enjoyed it enough to like and subscribe though, and isn’t that what we’re after lol. Good job man I look forward to some more of your videos.
Had a couple of Avalanches (rigid fork) in my family in the mid 90s.
Nice video! I just bought a GT Avalanche Comp. But realized it’s the 2019. What are the differences between the 19’ and 20’ are they significant? Thanks!
But I don’t have $725 $825 in my budget for a bike to ride on trails for fun and where I live bikes cannot replace cars. If they could I would have A LOT more in my budget for a bike. Especially since I typically spend $4k annually on insurance and gas. I wish bikes could replace a car and save me $4k annually, I would buy a really nice road and a really nice dedicated mountain bike if bikes could replace cars
a free bike always feel more comfortable and smooth for some reason…
Hey dude i realized that you have one of the Vitus Nucleus/Sentier frames in use and i wanted to ask you how much tire clearance those frames have and of you have a 29er if its convertable to 27,5+
I have an Aggressor Pro and it handles pretty great. I’ve experienced some shifting and braking issues, which suck, but otherwise a great bike!
I’m probably buying a 2020 avalanche expert 29er tomorrow. Any thoughts? I’m a newb and ride mostly with my kids for now, but if it’s awesome I’ll likely be out a lot more.
that bike would be great for me. i had a avalanche but it got stolen so i havent been able to ride much.
I have the 2019 GT Avalanche 29er, most of the same features. Not bad but not great. I updated the cranks and crank arms for they were the first thing to break. Also got Maxxis tires too.
Thank you for the great review, i have a question. Is it better to buy a Avalanche Comp 2019 or the Sport 2020 for the same money? thank you!
Thanks for these videos! You really help narrow down the overwhelming amt of info out thereespecially for a newcomer. Your new under $800 video brought me to this one, are you considering doing an update for this as well? Or do the picks still stand? Also, I was hoping for your opinionwhile I want to get into off-roading and single track riding, I will also be doing a fair amount of on-road riding and cobble-stone type roads as well. Do you have a suggestion for what would be best? Kind of a good “all rounder”. Cheers!
I love the video. I don’t have a lot to spend on mountain bikes rn so this is great. I’m trying to grow a mountain biking channel of my own. Any tips or is it possible to get a shoutout or something?
What do you think of the specialized rockhopper and the trek marlin 5…?
Maybe it can help sombody, its not tapared headtube, alteast not in EU, its only looks like it is, but when i ordered tapered air fork, i realized its straight.
Since watching this video, GT has been advertising to me all the time (Thanks Google). Why do all the pictures I see show this bike as a 2X front?
Edit Never mind, what I am seeing is the Avalanche Sport and this is the Avalanche Comp.
If it’s at a department or sporting goods store..dont touch it…dealer only…
could you make an updated version of this? im thirteen and my current department store bike isnt exactly the best. im looking for something under the 600 dollar range since i dont have much money to spare. I need something more agressive than crosscountry style if that helps any. Thanks in advance
U can easilly buy parts seperately here in the philippines and get better components
Just wondering if you can use the Giant Talon 3 for commuting or if its better to get a Trek Marlin 5 because i don’t plan on doing hardcore trails and mainly commuting to college. Please reply if you can.
GT stands for Great Bike.. I hope to have this soon.. Thanks for the bike review bro!
Please keep it up, I love your videos. I hope to a MTN in the near future and I love the info that you share.
Do you guys recommend getting short stem for a xc bike, mainly used for city riding, mahbe some stairs, it has 680mm bar
Have that same bike, been riding for over 35 years, like he said, switch out the pedals and tires and you have a great bike for money
Should do a comparison bw GT v. Merida(big nine) v. Trek (xcalibre) hardtail bikes..
Any suggestions as to which one is best and worth the money
What is the weight on the bike? really interested and its a great price.
Compared to a GT Performer BMX bike back in the 80’s, this Avalanche is affordable! GT (Performers) were like $300-$400+ back in the mid 80’s… And back then all I (my parents) could afford was a Huffy, Stu Thompson!
I don’t need to know much about mountain bikes to know this video was pretty bad…
My Zaskar cracked at the chainstays after 12-14 months use, wouldn’t touch a GT again.
Bulls, focus, and Rose are the best mountain bike makers. These all are like sh*t. For all who want a good bike under 500 $: Bulls Sharptail 2 disc. It’s 10 times better than those
Two things about this bike. One, GT is trying to make a bike that is both affordable and versatile. Compromises must be made, as you pointed out about the rear axle. Second, not all of us MTB’ers are purists or YOUNG. I ride a full suspension bike. But I am 70 years old, also. I need a bike that fits my budget and, at the same time, gives me versatility and a measure of comfort. Chunk on most hardtails can get pretty tough for me. Thankfully, I can lock out my suspension and get a hardtail ride on the occasions I need it but also gives me the option of full suspension. So, all in all, seems to me that GT is trying to do the next best thing. Less cost for improved features. Thumbs up.
I have a gt avalanche elite 2018(mine has air blockable on button suspension) bought brand new for 400$ this year and its great. It equiped with with good long distance gears and ultra easy climbing gears. Breakes are great too. You might want to change the pedals, tyres( they are fine but swap them and sell the stock tyres) and a dropper post would be great to add if you get a great deal like me. And i dont even go on tracks with it. Also for the city, the handle bar is good but i would like a streight wider one. If you plan on using it in the city, thing about geting a gel saddle, that one is made of stone.
for the vitus, do i have to pay any taxes or currency conversion charges? what additional charges are there other than the bike price itself? thanks in advance
I LOVE MY GT Avalanche 29! I think I will keep it!, may be new tires
Will you do the same review w a Salsa Rangefinder SX Eagle 27.5? How does it compare w the GT Avalanche?
As a result of COVID, there are practically no bikes let alone budget bike or CL/FBM/WM…. I’d expect a better fork for an $800 bike.
6 minutes of my life I will never get back.thanks for showing me which ones NOT to get
Exellent video. I had my heart set on the really pretty Trek Marlin 5, but that didn’t make this list. I’d really like to get a bike from a local shop. Do you think you can do a video like this comparing >$600 2020 bikes from all of the major bike shop brands (ie. Giant, Trek, Specialized, etc.)?
I feel like for 800 dollars I would rather buy a rockhopper for around 500
This man probably has never went mountain biking in his life.
what’s the the different between 21 speed, 24, 27 and 30 speed? for beginner which one do you recommended?
Awesome content. Hope that i can buy my own bike someday and use it here in philippines
I know a sick trail bike with rockshox for 450 dollars and all better parts than this
Is there a reason why you’re making an Illuminati pyramid hand sign. Are you a free mason?
I am thinking of getting the GT avalanche comp but i have seem reviews saying that the chain breaks and the pedals creak. It makes me wonder if it is worth 800 dollars
GREAT REVIEW!! MY BUDGET IS 1500! IM GONNA CHECK OUT MORE SELECTIONS I LOVE GT AICK I WAS A KID AS WELL
you could have picked some cube mountain bikes such us cube analog or the aim series
Iv been searching for a vitus cant find any for sale online or offline
I was looking of an all rounder bike.
Your video got me more interested on GT Avalanche. Thank you very much
#QuarantineDays2020

Hey, someone else is filming at “your” track! https://youtu.be/H68kZs7EfFU
You guys should get together, he likes to ride with reckless abandon and crash too…
I just bought a 2020 talon 3. Please give a 2020 review this was great. Wish I watched before I bought. Still happy with my purchase
i just got Ozone 500 Men’s Gira Terrano what do you think? is really bad bike??
850$?? Bro no way for this. I have bought a 450$ bike with the same fork, same brakes but with 3×8. I’ve changed the fork with a rockshox xc30 and a shorter stem with spank spoon handlebar and it feels like a very good hardtail. Total cost? 900$. I believe it’s worth much more.
My bike is: Lombardo sestriere 350
2:57“mountain bike” it’s a fat bike people always get confused about these bad boys also these are all bad accept the diamondback
Awesome video, like the Giant, but have been looking at a Fuji Nevada 1.3, just getting back into riding and found this bike but cant find much on it, just looking for your 2 cents
I just bought this bike today and I saw a lot reviews that said the chain broke after a couple of rides. Have you heard that at all?
Is it good for me to buy a GHOST kato 4.7 AL
Im a starter abd i will be riding ALOT of street (school, wheelies etc)
Its a hardtail and its a 27,5
Im 12 years old
If you want a good mountain bike don’t get a 3 by 8 or 3 by 9. PLEASE get a 1 by 9 or 1 by 8, you’ll be pleased when u can climb easier.
I know I’m kind of late here but do you know how much this weighs?
I guess the bike is mine now, so what would you like me to do with it next?
Check out the New 2020 GT Avalanche: http://bit.ly/2020_GT_ave
(P.s. I’ve not forgotten about the GT Sensor. I had to take it easy this summer due to some health stuff, but I’m getting back into things. Keep an eye out for more new content!)
It’s amazing how bikes evolve. I have a 1987 (dinosaur) Raleigh Mountain Tour Grand Teton. I upgraded to Suntour hubs, Shimano free wheel, crank bottom bracket and derails. Watched this video I know my Raleigh or I would not have a chance. Can you recommend a mountain bike that would be similar to this Grand Teton? Mostly for unban use but can handle a little dirt?
On the aggressor pro the tires wheels and cranks are all terra brand which is GTs in house brand like bontrager is to Trek
I had experienced hydraulic brake issues on this bike. Had to change the entire rear brakes worth 113 dollars. But now got it done and riding back again.
I wanna get into this but I’m not sure what’s a good entry level bike I’m 5’5 and would like a bike that’s under $500 if there is any recommendations I’m all ears.
I clicked off the video when i saw a comment where some one clicked off when he saw a mongoose
If you watch for a clearance sale I often see decent Specialized Rockhoppers and Cannondale Trails (usually xs or xl size)
Hi there, I love the look of the Marlin 5’s but do not want a bike with a 3×7 drivetrain, I pretty much am the target market for the Marlin as I’d ride it around my suburb and what not but also trails. I wanted to convert the bike into a 2×9, but am wondering if it’s worth it.
Hey man been thinking about getting the Marlin 6. Saw you’re not super keen on the Marlin 5 in another comment and I saw you talked about the Marlin 7 in another vid but it’s a bit too pricey for me rn. Thoughts on the 2020 Marlin 6? Looks pretty good to me besides maybe the fork/tire size I heard you didn’t like. Looking to use on single track. Moderate use not hitting massive jumps or anything like that lmao maybe a couple features as I progress and small jumps. If you’re not keen on the 2020 Marlin 6 (also saw it seems to be relatively mod friendly down the line if need be) what mtb would you suggest if anything new has come out that caught your eye. Would love to hear from you! Much thanks in advance:)
For $800, you could get the Polygon Siskiu D5 which is full suspension so I don’t see why you should take this bike instead of a full suspension
I just got the felt dispatch 990 for 800 Australian, I know nothing about them
Are they good?
I just brought an GRAVITY FSX V can you do just a quick review about this..anybody for that matter. I’ve read some reviews on Youtube and people actually like them. And they like that they didn’t have to pay a pile of money for it.
new to mountain biking.so i have get updated with the new technology.i’m a old bmx’er from the early 80s
now I’m 55 and a semi retired teamster with time on my hands that just happens to live close to the American river that has a nice paved bike path 25 + miles but I like to go off road and get the heart pumping.so i will look up you past videos for help btw i bought a used specialized year? for a starter $200 bike, but shit have things changed.i used to keep a crescent wrench in my back pocket.
everything is quick release. could used that when I was 15.lol
take care and be safe?? lol
800 DOLLARS?! Dude, someone please tell me this isn’t considered a budget bike. I am just looking at mountain bikes and I had no idea!
What type of GT Avalanche was this (ie. Comp, Elite)? Thank you.
Thanks for your great review, man! I just got the same bike. This is my first bike after 15 years. Thanks to Corona I managed to save quite fast for it. For what it offers it really is a budget bike. Can’t wait to ride it after work in 3 hours:)
Update: 1) I will have to modify drive sprockets. This bike is slow for my needs. 2) Pedals are bad, confirmed. Started squeaking during the second ride.
I know this video is older but is a Schwinn Axum better than these bikes?
Having a look for the vitus bike online, would the Nucleus 27 VR be the 2020 model year equivalent to the 275 vr?
You know nothing about bikes. You think a 3 by is good? Learn your bike
Could you make a video for under/around 400? Or is it a fact that those aren’t worth it at all?
Listen up good people… don’t let the terms ‘cheap’ inexpensive’ beginner’ starter bike’ or any other degrading remarks confuse you. Most reviews come off as if they have come down to talk to you…they are full of it. the truth is that for 400 to 600 dollars you can get a nice bike without the disparaging labels just mentioned. They are geared for the recreational rider not extreme downhill rock jumping styles. Thus, don’t spend more than you have to if you’re not the latter. Buy a bike that suits your style and pocketbook. Remember, you can always get a used bike too!
I’m just starting out with a bike. I really want to stay under the $500 area. Al the research I’ve been doing is pointing me to the gt aggressor pro. Do you see any reason I would regret that decision?
10 minutes of the video is about the Royce Union. The video maker is more stoopid than the man that showed the royce
Do you even mountain bike? 10 min isn’t enough research to make a top 10 video on a subject you know nothing about.
Are we just not gonna y’all about the fact he said budget bike and it’s u know 700 dollars
Grt video..nice content..n awesome bike.. planning to buy it..im 5’10 ft should i go for the size medium or large..what would u recommend on gt bike sizing??
Hi sir, I do have gt avalanche 2020, I like to change the chainring from 30t into 34t or change the whole allterra into shimano deore with 34t,my question is
Shimano deore 34t, 1x will fit for this bike??? Thank you in advance….
“For those who don’t wanna spend a fortune but want a hardtail bike the The Gravity FSX 2.0 is the one you need”. Do you even know what “hardtail” means? That bike has full suspensions you said so yourself, and it’s a crapy full suspension. wtf
Dude, can you help me on the rear hub upgrade. What type of adapter do i need for normal hubs to work? Links will be appreciated.
And also will 141x10mm qr skewers work as well?
On the Aggressor Pro, yes, you can put a Maxxis Aggressor 27.5 x 2.30 on the stock rims. Very interesting comparison, never heard of a couple of these bikes. That Vitus is cool looking!!!!
Great vid. I was looking at a Marlin 5 because I want a bike to mostly commute and also some trail. But a lot of reviews were criticizing the gear system being bad. But since it’s comparitively much cheaper I thought it would be a good choice. What are your thoughts? And if not which other should I consider?
Just picked up the GT Pro for $240. I have a $600 budget, what upgrades should I prioritize?
any idea about the Scott Aspect 950? I cannot find any reviews on it
I bought a GT Aggressor a while ago and it was the worst bike I’ve ever had. If you value your money and time do NOT buy a GT bike under $1000. It was a huge pain in the ass. I had it in the bike shop almost every week cause of a bent rim, an adjustment, or the brakes weren’t working right. Don’t buy a GT Aggressor, it’s a piece of garbage.
I’m in Denver too. Well, Arvada. Can you recommend a LBS where I can buy one of these? Bike sounds perfect for my use case. Great vid!
The last one is not a hardtail. Despite the lack of knowledge of whatever idiot who made this video, you don’t need to do any research to see the rear shocks on the blown up picture of the bike for the last 60 seconds of the video.
Doesn’t framed make a decent mountain bike fairly inexpensively? I just bought a wolftrax alloy (fatbike however) with carbon forks and nx drivetrain for 835$ on sale delivered.. sure it has its faults,26 inch rims, regular seat clamp, 60mm stern and not tubeless compatible but it can be upgraded out of alot of the issues. I’ll start with a stem, decent pedals (well any pedals lol) and maybe a dropper post.. any suggestions(I’m 6ft3) on a decent budget dropper? Vitus looks pretty nice I think btw.
I clicked off this video when I saw someone who saw someone who clicked off the video cus he saw a mongoose.
Nice video,I did a video on this Topic on my channel too!!My video is just about bikes under $400.
How am I supposed to know what geometry would suit me? I haven’t had a decent bike since the 90s. And I have a feeling that most bike shops don’t stock too many “budget” bikes.
Where is the best place to buy the vitus bike given it’s a UK company
Don’t listen to the guy you will need at least $700 to get a capable trail worthy bike
You don’t have to be “New” to biking for 800 or even $600 to be alot of money. Some of us adults just are tired of riding our uncomfortable jalopy from the 90s and don’t want to drop a years worth of property tax just for a guy & his gal to get around town & lose I few pounds
Specialized rockhopper Vs this gt avalanche both same price….?
YEAH JUST 725 DOLLARS SURE. (this is insane, there is no way a piece of metal can take this much money to develop.)
Hey I live in Chester. I just got a Gt agressor pro. Do u have any trail recommendations to go to around here?
I got all that on a 650€ bike! Shimano deore 1×10,mt 200,kenda tires and a nice geometry! For 650€ but the compromise was the bad fork.
Frame will probably break in 6 years time. That looks pretty sketchy, would not do any big jumps on that thing.
I saw another review showing that the GT Aggressor Pro has issues with the brakes and chain drop. How does this bike compare?
Would you recommend the Trek Marlin 6 over the Nucleus VR? Thanks for the video.
im a fan of Haro and GT. for me, I’ve come across the double peak as my next one.
I have a GT Avalanche Comp 29 from 2018. It has a tapered frame. I would like to upgrade the Suntour forks to RockShox. My current Suntour forks are straight. My question is can I replace my straight Suntour forks with Tapered RockShox forks on my bike that has a tapered frame and if so what do I require to do this?
Seems like a better priced bike for riding through some trails. More inclines but it’s worth more to me spending less than grand on a bike.
Haro is still sold at LBS. You missed the REI DRT 1.1. Good video though
