What’s your favourite headlight? Did it make the cut in this mega test? Let us know in the comments below!
I realize that you guys get a lot of high-end product sent to you, however there are FAR more affordable lights out there. I just bought a IPX6 rated 2000 lumens light with a flood and spotlight, usb rechargeable 4000 mah lithium polymer battery, ambient light sensor, accelerometer/motion sensor, and built-in 120db electric horn with break-out controls for less than $20 US on aliexpress.
Edit: Looks very similar to the Moon Meteor Storm Pro light that you reviewed, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same OEM.
The Lifeline Pavo Motion 2400 is not the giant killer described in this test or in any way a bargain IMO. It’s not a bad light and I can see how it performed well in a bar light only test because of its nice floody beam but instead of getting a light that outshines lights with twice the claimed lumen output (as described in the test) it actually delivers an almost identical beam pattern and 1300ish lumen output (my measured lumen output) of a Magicshine RN1200 I paid $45 for brand new on ebay (less than 1/3 of what I paid for the Lifeline). Additionally with the RN you get a wonderful Garmin style mount that fits any size bar, a mode button that only required one push to change levels, and a much smaller/lighter lamp. The only real performance advantage the Lifeline has is longer runtimes. I’ll give the tester the benefit of the doubt because it would be impossible to know some of this without actually testing the output of each light and spending an adequate amount of time with each light which would take months with 15 lights. So owning one of these lights I wouldn’t recommend it unless very long runtimes were your first priority. Lots of other brand name lights available with equal or better performance for less money!
I gather that this test was geared towards the most die hard off roaders, and not the other 99% of us.
Here’s the best back light i’ve found: https://www.vehicle-spares.com/products/xlite-100-smart-led-bike-rear-light
I’ve been using night lights on mtb and road bikes for decades, I find the way the light mounts is critical. Vibrations often move lights on handlebars, the mounts for exposure and nite Ryder are crap as they are on many lights. Do your research.
Narrator with the heavy accent was unintelligible most of the time. Prices weren’t shown on most of the products. In dark areas like unlit bike paths, 1000 lumens doesn’t cut it. A minimum of 3000 lumens (automotive/motorcycle) would be required.
I already got the frontier b4 this video but thanks.. i still need it for a spot helmet light on long distances!
Pity you did’nt review a CREE Bike light off Ebay, comparable brightness to all this overpriced Product placement at a fraction of the cost
Don’t believe the doubters who peddle the usual faults either such as Danger with charging, life expectancy etc
ive been using 3 different cree lights for well over 2 years and the are superb, insanity to pay £100 plus for this stuff but its up to you
I hate these 100500+ modes lights. I need just 2 modes ON and OFF
There was not Supernova M99 Pro in the review. Shame on you.
I think Gaciron is the best to be placed in Number 1. the 1800lumens model.
I’ve been using Night Rider lights since they put their batteries in water bottles and used regular light bulbs. Always a great product. I currently use a Lumina 950 mostly for riding on the roads at day time and just in case I get stuck out in the dark. I’ve had it for three years now and it performs flawlessly.
Nice, good job well done. Clamp security is most important for me, especially off road. Then its the actual beam colour, some colours are so hard to see with regardless of the power output. Next would be battery longevity and availability of a spare. I’ve used a third light before now for road sections to preserve my main lights. Cost is massive too, some insane priced there for lights. Access to on/off mode switches while riding? All in I think you’ve nailed that as a good test, thank you.
I think. I will stick to what i have on my trike. A small 12 v 6 ah battery 2 each 8 LED fog light strips mounted on each side of the trike. Last for 72 hours on one single charge. Other vehicles on the road will not pull out in front of me with those lights. (They are not sure what is coming down the road or trail. This is what I have been told.)
Thing here is: Night riding is always done with 2 lights. One on the bike that iluminates where you are going and one on the helmet that iluminates where you are looking. With this a lot of your points do not matter any more and you can have a really good setup with 2 lights for around 150 max.
Days are getting longer but I could use an additional light or two!!
Nice test. It would have helped if you showed the name of the lamp under test, maybe with lumen and price as well.
You fail to mention if there is a pilot light and that this light, as well as a wireless remote, will mean that the lamp is always on and will discharge in a day or two, when just sitting on the bike in the shed.
In most cases the off button does not turn the lamp off completely, because it’s an electronic button, that needs some circuit to be working, so you will have to pull the connecting cable to the battery, every time you get home and that can be a hassle as it’s very tight because it has to be watertight.
I have installed mechanical switches on both my lamps, that have this fault.
I also found that the capacity indicators dazzled me in the night, so I have installed some white tape over it. Did you check this?
And the Magicshine can only use proprietary battery. The Monteer 6500 is currently only compatible with Magicshine MJ-6106D 4 pin battery pack., which makes it expensive to replace although it’s a very good battery.
Far too many unnecessary modes on lights. Better to show lights on unlit dark roads/tracks.
this comparison has or more specifically the comments on this video have opened my eyes to…
fairly priced technology on ebay/amazon/aliexpress…: )
thanks to those for posting about cree and xhp70.2… just google those terms and…
far out we’re paying way too much for generic technology with a brand name sticker.
If you’re going to test expensive lights, the least you could do is measure the actual lumens and effects of thermal regulation (throttling).
Interesting. I have an ott system on my current bike and I would love to see how it stacks up against some of the better lights out there.. I graduated from a Lupine Betty and wanted something better.. I think that I have got there now, but what I have would not be to everyone’s taste.
Please check out the link below which will lead you to the most amazing bargain light ever! I have been using mine for almost two years now and its still going strong! It will set you back £14.38….yup, £14.38 for a full aluminium body, 2 X Cree LEDs and a built in battery. Its one of those uber simple 3 brightness levels and 2 flashing modes. It is splash resistant and is USB chargeable. It puts out a claimed 1000 lumens and the light has a slight yellowish hue rather than white or blueish. The only thing to be aware of is its weight which is fairly heavy but thats an irrelevance given its quality. I have used many FAR more expensive lights but after using this for a while, there is simply no point in spending hundreds. Check it out and see what you think! Oh I forgot to mention, the build quality is frikkin amazing, you can see that in the photos.

very cool bicycle light, comes very fast

Four4th “holy moses” at 4,600 lumens and 4hrs run time made in the UK from CNC alloy by craftsmen on the bar and a “OMG” on the helmet. They even have an MTB race team who test them:-). Quality UK made lights. http://www.four4th.co.uk

Good thorough review. Happy with an R8 on the bars and a Magicshine MJ880 on the lid. Have a Gloworm X2 which is disappointing…
Is it not better to have more lights which are all at lower lumens, than to have one single big light at a higher lumen? Charging time would also be less time with smaller lights compared to charging one big light.
How do you like an idiot with 1000lm on his helmet pointed right in your eye? Because if you don’t explain it to the people in review that is how you get one during your night commute along the cycling path or on the road.
Please, responsibility.
Is there really no way to measure lumen output? I don’t want to hear about “claimed” lumens!
These must be great commuter lights, but once you use a proper helmet mounted light for actual mountain biking, you won’t consider bar mount lights again! 2000 lumen helmet mount beats 6000 lumen bar mount, any day. Also does not blind any other trail user to death…
Like the Lumina Dual 1800 and the Magicshine Monteer, got myself a second light for cheap 400lm with 5 modes and light sensor only 8€, but can´t compete with none of those on the video. very nice video comparison and models.
What about the Vont bike light on amazon? It also doubles as a flash light
I bought a cheap light off Amazon which is also a Bluetooth speaker. It’s decent enough to use at night and I can load up 4,000 songs on an SD card too. It’s 2500 milli amps and can charge your phone too. I paid $13.
What if I need a light that lasts for 4-5 hours? Or maybe more?
This was a genuinely comprehensive review of all aspects of bike lights from cost, to lumens, to battery run time on max power. Well done.
No StVO type beam means blinding other oncoming cyclists in urban areas. I typically have to stop my bike and wait for these cyclists to pass because I cannot see anything at all while blinded.
Evolva lights? All in one nice spread 45€. Add a small tactical hand torch on the helmet and you can cover the blindspots.
Best part is if you trash them you don’t have to spend hundreds to replace them.
Do the all-in-one lights mounted on the handlebar change the bike handling? I suppose such a heavy weight there can be felt in the technical sections
I will have to watch this vid 30 °/. more times to figure out what the hell is going on.
I have just ordered a light around 1000 lumen (1800 claimed) from banggood. Costs 12 USD.
Comparing Lumens on bike lights that are measured in 1 square foot taped boxes is like comparing contrast ratio’s on TVs where they’re measured in just 50×50 pixels. I haven’t seen someone with a bike light that attached to a battery in at least 5 years. Maybe you guys in the UK are just lacking someone willing to ship to you, who knows. There are literally two dozen or more 800-1200 Lumen wireless bike lights that are measured at a 60 100 foot throw, NOT at 3 feet. I stopped clicking on your links after #7. Not a single one of them up to that point were measured the way Lumens are truly measured. They’re measuring them as candlepower, the number of Lumans seen at 3 feet.

Wow! That beam pattern on the last light is phenomenal! And half the price of my exposure six pack!
It’s a fantastic, comprehensive test, but the video sorely lacks on-screen manufacturer and model description.
Exposure 6 pack all day may not be the best spred pattern but well built solid reliable unit I run mine on program 3 lasts 12 hour’s on high plenty of power and I can see more than enough to shred the trail
Yeah….a reputable chinese/taiwanese flashlight brand with $1 mount, separate reputable charger, number of quality 18650 batteries that suits your ride lenght, will cost you sooo much less even when you put one on the bar and one on the helmet. And it will be all separate. Failure of one component will not be equal to failure of a complete integrated system. Or a repair labour cost after warranty period. And will give more use out of the light, as flishlight is more usefull for wider spread of uses, than a bar mounted head unit with a battery pack. Also I’m wondering, scratch that I’m very much doubting, that most battery packs have cell balancing in them and lack of that means trouble. That’s why a single flashlight for single task, with single 18650 cell is the best option. And if you decide you need more light, you can mount a second one on the bar. But really, if most recommend a thrower on the head with around 1k lumens, then why would you need more on the bar for close flood? Perfectly happy having 900 lumens flood on the bar and 900 lumens thrower on the helmet. And I’ve seen more light with my own eyes, so it’s not entirely: “you didn’t use more light, so you don’t know”
500 quid for a bike light? Someone avin a fakkin tin barf or sammink?
Great set of lights. I just got a new light for my bars, the Outbound Lighting Trail. New company that only makes a couple products, but they have the best beam pattern I’ve seen in person-and the almost 3 hour runtime on high is nice too. Not the best throw, but I use a spot light on my helmet (Lumina) and it works out perfectly.
great review and comparison. I would also like to compare some of the lights modes. How they compare and how long the lights last at lower brightness modes is a pretty important consideration for my needs. As I am often riding for quite a bit longer than the maximum brightness 1 or 2 hour run times. If I can get 5-6 hours of use at a lower brightness without sacrificing too much visibility that would be all I need. While still having the option to turn it up to max when needed.
I will stick to my 10,000 lumen £20 eBay lights with about 3 hours run time. Lasted over a year so far of heavy use.
That was very enlightening…
I use a older Sigma Lightster USB
For the city it’s ok, but for the forest..in the dark..not so much.
My current favorite setup, excellent overall and the lights with the best engineered optics on the market didn’t make the test. Outbound Lighting.
Who cares how many pounds a light costs? The question is: how many tons it costs.
Safe yourself and children on the road. Bicycle RUSSIA the BEST!!!
https://youtu.be/76I5P1ggYQI
were those shots really a 30 second exposure? or did you mean a 1/30th of a second exposure?
I wouldn’t count on more than 800 lumens max out of a Cree bulb. Any 2-bulb light stating over say 1600 lumens is bogus and needs to be actually certified.
Make sure your bike lights are charged up and ready for the darker morning commute after daylight saving time changes!
The depth of this review was awesome, cheers! I just can’t believe you just shrugged off Asia direct lights due to safety concerns and didn’t touch on dyno lights! Asia direct lights, with their extremely low price they make a great entry level light to get people outside in the winter. Yes, charging safety can be questionable, however its questionable for name brand lights too, especially when bike lights are use/abused as they are. Whatever the case, i’ve converted to dyno lights, if you have the money they’re worth it (see K-lite, Exposure, Supernova).
These are NOT the 10 best lights. (False Title) These are some good lights, but there are many others out there that are just as good if not better than these.
You forgot to measure el-mag radiation.. Its harmful for body and it disturbs some bike computers
Exposure been difficult to use unless you read the Manual is just nonsense.. a 747 is difficult to use unless you read the Manual.
“no no-name chinese lights allowed” and allowing the same chinese lights but under a worldwide unknown brand and double and triple the price!
Dont forget candela output (intensity) i dont see many bike lights giving it a rating.Kelvins and beam pattern a lot more important for a bike light too/
EVERY SINGLE LIGHT BLINDS THE SHIT OUT OF OPPOSITE DIRECTION PEOPLE/TRAFFIC this is a problem that no one wants to address. Under certain conditions, it can TOTALLY BLIND YOU which is extremely dangerous. The idiots that PUT A HUGE bright light on their rides with NO REGARD for other people especially on the road are the bane of other riders. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt badly or even killed.
Sorry, those are cheap low quality lights. In no way did you test the better lights on the market. Shame.
Already have plenty of flashlights that work its the mounts needed to mount them on bikes
Thanks for the awesome video. I really liked the LEZYNE LITE DRIVE 1000XL because you can swivel the light which is what I was looking for but a little expensive so I went with the Iligo bike light front and back instead. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081Z6MDWW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

very cool bicycle light, comes very fast
https://www.newegg.com/p/05R-01MR-00001
This is like deep-groove vinyl, BikeRadar, thanks for this across-the-board display of lights. And to answer your question of which light is right, I’d say, as a commuter, the perfect light makes me visible to motorists without making them mad and prompting them to flick on their stadium lights in retaliation. Unfortunately, too many of them do that no matter what, so I wear a visor on my helmet and look down until they roar past or turn off their brights on otherwise dark two-lane roads. Bike lights are a necessity for anyone riding at night or even during the day when it is stormy and gloomy. Thanks again, BikeRadar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV2uaA1Y86k&t=263s the Monteer has changed night riding for me, superb lamp.
What about the LUCIA | SMART TAILLIGHT from THE BEAM its the best looking rear light
I have the Light-in-Motion Taz 1500, it does a fantastic job of lighting the trail and is a one piece unit. Batt life at high power is about half of the Seca model you tested. It’s a great light for shorter night rides and costs about half as much.
Do a second test with the very best Ebay and Aliexpress lights, there are some true gems out there!
Seperate battery pack to mount to bike on the Victagen hell no! This is, again, not a good review. I will continue my search. I want 1. a usb rechargeable light that slides on/ snaps into place on a secure mount (no stupid rubber bands that wear out and are clumsy to reattach every time you charge it) 2. preferrably usb tail light that has good design not round and strobes. 3. Headlight must have good spread and focus but not too bright to be annoying to traffic. Am I asking too much? And under $30!
Shedding this many £££ on battery operated light, isn’t it better to go for bike dynamo like Son or in fact any one?
cool video but i wish one of these used solar and who disliked this video
Way too cheap; I am in the market for a ultra light, ultra bright, ultra shhpessall (it’s posh for special), solid gold £10000+ light that serves icecream while on a trail; any recommendations?
A cautionary example for the eBay bargain fans: https://www.glenmorelodge.org.uk/warnings-after-exploding-head-torch-battery-causes-fire/
The real test of any bike light is whether or not they shed enough light on an unlit road or bike path. If you’re moving along any faster than a good jog on an unlit road, you need a front light with at least 1,200 lumens. 3k lumens would be better. In other words, automotive grade illumination is what’s called for. You don’t want to outrun your headlights.
Also, there are too many modes. How about low, medium, high and flashing. Battery power should last a minimum of 2 hours at max power setting. And who rides through traffic with the light turned 90 degrees to your direction of travel? Silly. None of these lights were up to par. Showing us how bright a light is in daylight is pretty lame.
Big miss not including Outbound Lighting https://www.outboundlighting.com/ I have ridden with many different lights over the last 20 years and the beam and build quality on these lights blow me away!
Use a Bontrager Ion Pro RT light, sometimes on the bar and sometimes with the helmet mount. Really like it.
I need a headlight that uses 18650 battery, I don’t like the built in li ion
Fenix offers amazing value and build quality on all their lights. They are already highly respected in the flashlight industry but completely overlooked amongst cycling brands. And unlike most, they feature swappable batteries (rechargeable 18650’s). Easy choice for all-night outings and will never expire from worn out batteries (that can no longer hold a charge).
