I own the UD women’s vest which fits well and allows me to run w my nutrition bar and be handsfree. I keep the silicone bottles filled w water in the fridge overnight for my long run the next day. My girls freeze so bad. Lol.
I AM RUNNING 10 -15 PLUS MILES LATELY. THE ONLY THING I BRING WITH ME IS MY TRACKER WATCH, I DON’T EVEN NEED A T SHIRT, AFTER MY FIRST MILE, I TAKE IT OFF
Although you are talking about ultras, running in the Southern Nevada desert in the summertime just sucks the water out of you, even if not soaked with sweat because of the low (sometimes 1% humidity). I lose 2 1/2 quarts of water per hour of running here in the summer (measured by recording my weight before and after the run undressed). I leave insulated 20 oz bottles of ice cubes and water on the front porch and double back to the house every 3 miles to exchange bottles. Uninsulated bottles don’t work for me as the water gets really hot, like the 110 degree air temperature, no fun to drink. But in these conditions one could go through a lot of water even for a half marathon. Sometimes I splash the water on me, feels really good. I call it artificial sweat. Even if the water is warm it still feels freezing because of the low humidity.
I did an experiment last summer. Using an industrial infared remote reading thermometer I took the skin temperature on my tummy in the house sitting around in air conditioning at 72 degrees, it was 90F. Then I ran several miles at 110 degrees outside and took the skin temperature immediately after stopping running. It was about 72 degrees, almost 20 degrees cooler than before the run. That is the power of evaporating water in the desert. This would not work in Florida but is why I can run in what seems incredible temperatures in Nevada, my skin is actually cool to the touch….BUT I am evaporating 2 1/2 quarts per hour of water to stay cool.
I can only imagine how much water it would take to run an ultra marathon here in the summer. I am planning to run a half marathon next summer though. I will also bring bottles of salt water (or sometimes just pour a little salt in my hand and lick it up) so as not to die from hyponatremia. I am hoping for a 110 degree day so this 72 year old can compete with the young out-of-town people in the race.
I’m a huge UD fan before 2017 I used UD SJ3 for FM/short trail and UD AK3 for ultra trails. 2017 onwards I’m using UD TO3 for FM/short trail and UD PB3 for ultra trails. The soft flasks are made by HydraPak with lifetime warranty. Quality material and finishing great products!
Kalenji running packs are great! I have one and it has everything.
I’ve been using the Nathan VaporAir since September and have logged countless miles in training for my first ultra. I love it. It holds everything I have needed on my runs and it has ample space to pack away the extra layer I was wearing on a few longer runs.

I’m more of a bladder guy. I really like the convenience of having the bite valve right on my shoulder and and less times to stop and fill. I’ve never had my bladder leak, rip or get a hole punctured in it; perhaps I’ve been lucky. I do usually take two bottle of Gatorade with me on long hikes along with the bladder.
Thanks for the review,
Considering the amount of money I paid for my huge a..ss high quality hiking backpacks, price for running packs are bullsh.t expensive for what they are and the small amount of materials used to build them
Unfortunately we need them and the companies know it…
Is it possible to put a round cycling water bottle in the pockets / sleeves that are used to hold the flat water bottles that come with vests?
Thanks for sharing great review…
Is there a way to use a hydration pack for winter running, meaning sub zero temperatures? The water line always freeze…
Thanks for the comparison! I’m using the Salomon Adv Skin 12 and besides the broken toggles which I made a video on it’s by far the best pack I’ve used and for sure most comfortable! Using the bigger pack as I want to do longer distances too. Going to search your channel now and see if you’ve reviewed any headlamps I need to grab one for an upcoming race. Cheers
If anyone is interested in purchasing a Nathan Sports Hydration Vest/Pack Let me know. I have a few brand new vests that I am selling.
I got my water bladder and cleaning kit for free, the people from the Surplus store I buy from were nice enough to give me the stuff. I do buy a bunch of things from them all the time though. And cleaning the stuff it’s easy, fill it with water with bleach, let it sit for 30 minutes and then scrub everything. I keep my water bladder in my chest rig. Also, if you carry powder flavor packets for water bottles, you can get rid of that taste. I carry Propel. And well mine doesn’t have that taste though, I carry the propel for the electrolytes.
Surprised Yeti didnt make a hydration pack yet. You know that would win because Jeff loves Yeti
I’ve never done an ultra and don’t plan to but…as a Florida runner I rarely have access to water stations o training runs and in the summer I bring water with me on runs over 7 miles. Ive used Amphipod bottles from fleet feet and waist pack bottles. If I need a lot of water then I carry the bottle but if not then I use the waist pack bottle, finding that easier. If I did an ultra I’d probably use a pack with the two bottles in the chest pockets.
The main con is you don’t know how much water you actually have with out unpacking your pack.
He’s having way too much fun with the bottles up front, haha! Adorable
I love my Salomon packs even though I haven’t done an ultra yet, I wear it on 20 mile trail runs.
Old SW Reno makes a lovely backdrop to this video. Thanks for the comparison!
I run with a Marmot Kompressor Zest Hydration backpack and have used it on all my long runs and a couple of ultras! Thanks for the video just in case something happens to it in the future.
What’s this model in the video as looks perfect for what I’m looking for. Thanks.
Do you prefer a hydration bladder, or bottles to carry water on your hikes? Let me know below!
Thanks for watching!
Dang, Riz, those vests are at least two generations old there are modern Salomons and Natan vaporKrars which are most common and are actually used among many pros.
I route the nathan hydration tube on the same side of the magnet so you don’t have it flapping around when you take off the whole pack. You end up with an extra long tube but you can always cut it.
Nathan VaporAir is indeed an awesome running vest. Perfect fit for trail running and any distance. Plenty of storage plus bungees to carry trekking poles when needed. I also prefer the bladder in the back as well, so that is one more plus to this vest .
Salomon quality is garbage. I just threw mine away after 1 year after it developed several holes in the front storage areas. It was very comfortable but I don’t want to replace it every year.
Salomon adv 12 set. Def best pack on the market. Good job. And it’s not even an s-lab! You should check out Inov8 and montane packs too.
Yeah, the taste of plastic from my hydration bladder is soooo bad. Nothing (freezing, lemon juice or deep cleaning) has gotten it so I enjoy drinking from it. Discovering Sawyer filters and having a way to make water safe from available water sources makes bottles my choice too.
any tips on stopping the slushing noise as i run with hydration vest?
Any recommendation on a vest suitable for a runner healing from a broken clavicle? Race goal while healing is to get back to a 50 miler than 100. Thanx!
I prefer bottles. Not being a flexible guy I also had a problem getting them out of my pack pockets. Finding a way to attach a bottle to each shoulder strap solved that problem and I’ve found that I drink more this way and avoid dehydration. Lots of Youtube videos to explain how to do this. Thanks for all the great videos!
The Nathan vapor air pack is the one for me even though it is a little pricey
EVERY single one of those vests are insanely overpriced. Aonijie vest are a quarter the cost and just as feature filled. I’ve had three, and they’ve survived 80 running events in two years and over two thousand miles along with 8 OCRs.
in this video, what size are u using for the review? i hope u can give us the info. thank you. we need that especially for online purchase.
Depends on where aid stations are and how course is laid out. I love 12oz nathan handhelds, but vaporkrar belt is nice too and let’s me run fast and gives me use of both hands. I think if I was doing something real technical, long and variable weather, maybe my nathan vaporkrar vest.
I hike the same areas as you…the ADK playground! Back to Pharaoh Lake Wilderness this weekend! I have been using 2 big Smartwater bottles, but also a cheap 2l bladder from a day pack I fill at home before I leave. (I use a Sawyer Squeeze to filter into all three…so a giant pain in the ass, but worth it!) I HATE trying to clean that bladder…and just KNOW I’m not doing it properly. Sceeves me out. So…I am thinking about just using it to carry unfiltered water to a site/shorter distances. Otherwise, just leave it empty and in my pack. Anyone else do this? Do I have to worry AS much when cleaning a “dirty” water bag? (You’ll all say yes. I know better. Just trying to be lazy here.)
Water is not usually that hard to find where I like to go, but I have plans for other trips and having that bag (even if I’m carrying extra weight!) may be great if I know I’m about to stop being spoiled by streams and lakes.
Just subscribed…thanks so much for the videos. If I see you out there, I’ll say hello. I owe you a Snickers or something:)
Hi, can you make a video for people who do hiking? (packs for example), will be very nice. Thank you.
I like the Nathan, camelbak and the Salomon. Seem affordable and perfect for what I need.
I live in a cold climate so I just run on treadmills with a water bottle, but I’d consider the Nathan.
Can you please do a hydration vest review for women? Most of these companies offer men and women packs. You didn’t show any of these on women and vests fit different on women (for obvious reasons).
I’ve been running with the Salomon for the last 2 years and I like it a lot. I’ll admit that it is an expansive piece of equipment but it’s well worth it. What I like about it it’s its flexibility. You can use only the bottles 2×500 ml and you can also add the blader if need be. I have used it from not carrying water to the full assortment and it works well in any case. If for whatever reason you need to replace one of your bottles as it happened to me, I strongly suggest to buy it somewhere else and not from Salomon. They charge like 30$(CDN) for a replacement 500ml soft flask which is completely abusive. I got like 2 replacements (not Salomon) for the same price on Amazon. In closing, I would make another suggestion that would pretty much apply to any hydration vest. Try to find a replacement caps or bottles equipped with a straw that comes out fo the top of the cap, it makes for an easier usage by not having to bend your neck or pull up on the vest when drinking.
Yeah, well, 30$ does not make such a huge difference. So if I were using such things, I would go with Salomon. By the by, check your links. I clicked on both of them for the stated packs and they brought me to Amazon with no result.
I am from Brazil, and just went to the US on DC, spend 2 weeks there with my uncle, and I bought the Jaybirds X4 because of your channel, man those phones are really great, they are a really good fit, comfortable and with high quality and value. thank you for your great tips!! I will stay connected with this channel… I wish you put on test the ON running shoes to compares them with brooks glycerin…:)
Dose the front straps rubbing the running shirt and then damaged the shirt fiber?
You had a ton more info than UD did on their website. UD set the bar pretty low, but still.
Nathan. I’ve had mine for a year. Many trail miles. Awesome.
i own a UD vest, but the hard-sided bottles are poor. Poor water delivery. UD needs to go back to the testing phase and re-release different bottles.
I will be purchasing one pretty soon!!! Thanks for this video
Sry but if it is a complaint that the vest does not fit a smartphone… buy a cheap $30 mobile and if it is not mandatory by the rules of the race leave the phone at home…
How is cleaning the running packs with a bladder, plus thanks for the video
I like the ultimate direction ones except the bottle tops get destroyed in the OCRs I’ve run lol. I switched to a belt
Not a runner but I would say the nathan is the pack to have and I’ll show my daughter who is a runner
Really helpful ahead of my first ultra in April. I’m really not 100% comfortable with a pack and i’ve loved using handhelds in marathons (being self sufficient from start to finish). I have a naked band, but I also have a kit list which I need to account for and how to store / carry them throughout the distance (which the pro’s don’t seem to have to carry?!) so i’m still open to all options

After a lot of experiments, during my ultras I use both, handheld water bottles and a vest. But I wear the vest without any flasks or bladder inside because the bounce is annoying. I use the vest just for carrying all the other essentials and I feel free and much lighter.
like this… I’m one who needs water after a 1/2 mile… Loath being thirsty and don’t like anything in my hands. Struggle is real.
For these ridiculous prices, why not just use a Camelbak mule?
I really like my Camelback, the bladder is actually safer inside the special backpack that protects it better than just bungees. On your vest, a bladder would be more likely to get damaged then it would inside of a special pouch like what’s made by camelback
I am a biker and today picked my first running pack at the dollar store for 3lv or $ 1,5, if you believe that. I didn’t even know these existed.
It’s super basic one made in China and mostly meshes, but more than enough for some keys, spare tire and my phone as my bike is weird design and bags can’t be fitted. Can’t beat it at this price.
All that it lacks from these expensive ones are front pockets which I don’t need. It even has bladder.. hanger?
And a built-in whistle in the front buckle. LOL
What size was the Nathan vest? I am about the same build as you.
I would really like to see you review the orange mud hydration pax which are different than any other ones I’ve seen. I’ve run with Camelback and Nathan best and while they’re good the orange mud models work better for me in places like Okinawa where it’s hot and humid and you want to have your back free to sweat and release all that excess body heat.
I would like any of the bladder packs, but I wouldn’t use it enough to justify the kind of money these cost.
Putting the water bottle in a damp sleeve it will keep it cooler. We used this trick in the desert.
soooo, the 30.00 extra from the Nathan scared you away from the Salomon?
I’ve never worn a pack, but a 50 miler in the Everglades even in March is definitely making a pack a necessity. Florida heat and humidity can grab you quick!!! Do you ever use it for marathon training?
I prefer a vest for solo long runs and adventure runs, but for races or shorter runs in hot weather, I’ve actually come to love using a belt!! It’s lightweight and keeps my hand free, but I can still pack plenty of water, my phone, and some gels/food.
I like the CamelBak just because they are the most trusted brand.
Just use one of those hats you can keep drinks on and have a straw. Simple answer ♂️
I’m testing out some vests for a staged race I’ll be doing this summerhappened to test out the Ultra Vest 4.0, Salomon ADV Skin 5, and the Nathan VaporAiress 2.0. I mostly agree with your assessments here. As a small female distance runner the VaporAiress is my favorite of the three, followed by the Advanced Skin. The Ultra Vest didn’t work for me.
I prefer the hydration bladder most of the time, simply for the convenience. I think the three liter because I’d rather have to much water than not enough. Hiking Mount Marcy is literally an all day affair. The bladders to me at least allow your hands to be more free especially when hiking with trekking poles. The bottles you need two hands to unscrew the lids and well if your drop a bottle cap-yuk! But sometimes an extra Nalgene bottle for cooking water and coffee for an overnight night stay is nice to have.
I have been thinking of switching over to a bladder, but as you mentioned the taste is putting me off.
very good information, I use both, depending on which hiking locations I am in.
Just bought the Nathan VaporAir, after extensive research. Great fit, value, and storage.
I use a carabiner to clip my Nalgene bottle to my pack to keep it from falling out
I store my hydration bladder in the freezer to prevent mold… also the osprey exos has those sweet water bottle pockets… you could have also mentioned tucking the bladder hose into your jacket… ur the one that gave me that pro tip
$150 or $180. I’d just spend the extra $30 and get the Salomon.
If the price difference is only $30 get the Salomon one!:)
I’m not a long distance running but I’d think it would be hard to not go with the Solomon.
It would be SUPER NICE if you can find some girls to help you do a video for women of different chest sizes. Review running vest with hydration pack vs bottles on top or on the side. It would be greatly appreciated. This video was very helpful. Thanks!
Nice video once again, I guess it also depends on the event, as some that I did last year aid stations were every 20km, and depending on how fast you’re running that could mean you should carry more. Ohhhhh I easily see how this could go on for a very long time this video, but you got the points across well in a short time. I never use handheld, mainly pack, or naked belt. Naked belt is great.
Watching this just for fun i have never runned or done any sports. Now i am thinking of buying one for winter walks to work. I will have my hands free and the water will not freeze otherwise bottle in hand will just turn into ice
Super cool! There’s a few brands I’d never heard of on here, I’m used to camelbak mostly
I’ve been running in the Nathan for well over a year, I absolutely love it. No complaints.
Excellent review of some top packs. A year ago I made the move from hydration pack to the Naked Running Band. Wow, what a nice difference to not have something on my back and shoulders. I fully understand where the ultra packs have their place, but so far, the NRB is hands down, my go-to.
Thanks again rizknows!
I love marathons and hiking!
This was another great video I always wanted to know which running pack to use:)
(1st)! I like the Nathan vapour!
I’ve been using the camel pack circuit for 4 years now and it’s been through marathon, 50k, to OCRs. Only recently has the adjusting clips on the bungee cords for the 2 front pockets lost its ability to clip therefore leaving the pockets unsecured but amazingly nothing has ever bounced out while running. I just loop the bungee cord on my right pocket to one of the bladder straw clip on the sternum strap and voila! My phone is secure that way. But I am eyeing the Nathan for more pockets…
Fair presentation, but it doesn’t has to be either-or. I’ll use bladders, bottles, or both, depending on context. In dry areas, a big advantage of bladders is the ability to squirt water with the hose. I hike with a dog, and squirting water for him to drink wastes less water (& therefore requires me to carry less) than pouring water into a bowl. Another vessel you don’t really touch on is the collapsible water bottle (playpus with a cap, not a hose). You can freeze a couple, and that will keep a perishable meal safe all day if you tuck it between them. You’ll also have super cold drinking water as it melts (although condensation will dampen the inside of your pack).
do you find that hydration vests are better than running belts with multiple water bottles?
Im looking for really comfortable vest for long run. What do u suggest?
Saw and heard the best about this vest…BUT price is just too steep for regular runner like me
I sent the Nathan back. Main problems were open back pocket should have had a fastening, just velcro would do. Mobile phone pocket too small for today’s bigger phones. I felt my cheaper pack was better it just doesn’t have a pole carrying holder.
Hears “it’s pretty affordable” gets excited “around $130″ lol I’m so cheap
Mate, where is the Garmin Instinct review? This is the most exciting garmin (for me personally) that would finally sway me from a GShock. Def needs the Rizknows cover:)
In 2020 the Nathan Vapor makes you look like your scuba diving.
Huge fan of UD Gear. I featured their Fastpack 30 in my last article in American Survival Guide. Their equipment is very high quality and highly innovative.
