Is it safe to take over the counter prenatal vitamin from Wal-Mart when you are already pregnant???? Are there brands that are better than others or are they all the same in the end?
Thank you for sharing your supplements! I had to pass on the Blood builder tho as they contain folic acid.
I’d love to see a review of one of Brian Shaw’s full day of eating videos!
Somebody has been doing Dr. Greg and chill session 😉 Nice vid
Thank you for this video! Do you ever discuss blood work and reproductive health and how nutrition can improve these metrics of health?
I recently went to the doctor and she had advised me to lose 30 pounds (I did it), and yes, huge daily discrepancies with weighing myself every day! Thankfully I had great resources but I was shocked when I found this out!
Hey Abbey.
Have you ever done a video on pros/cons of tracking Macros?
If not, would you be willing to do one
I would love to hear your opinion.
Hey abby, I Think it depends on what kind of coach you have and how you view these competions. For me bikini competitions helped with my eating disorder bulimia to realise that I need food to build muscle and maintain a healthy weight. After 3 years of bulimia I got better because I did a competion and I was so damn proud that I quit throwing up Cold turkey. My coach doesn’t support me using supplements, and even said that if I would use anabolic steroids without him knowing I did, he would stop coaching me. Yes you have a lot of shitty coaches out there that have no clue what they are doing, but I Think you are very negative about this subject. I get that there are problems with bikini competitions, but I Think there are also a lot of beautiful sides of it, and there are a lot of coaches and people that do it the right way. Love watching your video’s, but wanted to get this off my chest!
Can you do a review on Glam & Gore’s video about how she lost 28 pounds and 6 in of her waist? She worked with a celebrity trainer and it has 5.2 million views. Gabbie Hanna has one with the same trainer that has 6.8 million views and I know you did a review on her What I Eat in a Day. A lot of the weird habits she had in that video were recommended by her trainer Steve Zim
I did Noom for about 6 months or so and lost 15 lbs but after I stopped the weight quickly came back. The “coaches” sucked and would only check in on me once a week regardless of how many times I reached out for support. I would not recommend this app to anyone who wants to eat intuitively. I would love to see an app from Abbey focusing on eating intuitively!
I’m not a body builder and I do get low body fat is dangerous and all but i think that wrestling, cage fighting, and other women fitness/ muscle sports is good because it represents bodies and normalizes them. It really makes me mad that other men and women need to comment about women’s bodies saying they look “masculine” or like “men” take Michelle McDaniel as an example.
Really enjoyed this video! Keep it up abbey!
Abbey, I would love to see a video of what to eat and if it changes when you are getting older. My mum and I have different opinions about it. She says that she grows on pounds and decided to eat lean. While I think that she maybe could focus on moving more than as your nutrients and vitamins your body needs needs to come from your diet. You stay your whole life a human and you will need an human diet your whole life. You might need some more or less of the vitamins and nutrients over the years. I am someone that wants to keep learning and she keeps it to her knowledge ” you move less when you are getting older, and so you need to eat less.”, while I think that when you are getting older you better can focus on moving more than eating less. Could you explain this in a video, please? Thank you Abbey.
They are athletes this is what they do, anything to extreme is not healthy, they are not clamming to be healthy no one looks at competitors and thinks ‘wow their healthy’ no… they look freaky that’s the point
This was great Abbey! As an athlete who does compete in bodybuilding, I wasn’t sure what I would hear here but you presented the facts and what to consider if someone chooses this sport. I love lifting and a still competing but my health physical and mental is always number one and searched long and hard for one that puts this first. It is definitely not for everyone but done in a healthy way can a really incredible experience. Thank you for this.
As much as I love bodybuilding, i regret prepping. Took over a year to get normal-ish hunger queues. I’m still struggling with a slowed metabolism and body image problems. Wish more people knew about the risks.
I feel like we have taken unnatural measures to look a certain way, and not only does that affect mental and physical health, but it also doesn’t seem to fit with what our ‘instincts’ find beautiful, in my opinion.
Could you talk a little bit about the “different types of metabolism”? I’ve been seeing a lot of youtubers go to nutritionists for weight loss purposes and they emphasize how it’s important to eat according to your personal metabolic type. I was just wondering if there’s any science behind this? For reference Remi Ashton and Alisha Marie are 2 youtubers that follow this type of program.
I think that in order for this to have better information, there should be a look at other sports that are weights oriented. Powerlifting, weight lifting, calisthenics. A lot of these people also go through bulking and cutting phases but the goals are different from bodybuilding.
I am a female bodybuilder myself and I love this sport through and through. However, I`d say i is extremely important to know about everything that comes with it and pay attention as well as spend most time not being in a deficit. Love love love that you are making this more popular!:)
Look if your goal isn’t weight loss don’t go on a weight loss app. And chill it with the damn air quotes.
I’ve been doing Noom since February and was on the verge of cancelling when I saw your review, which put me over the edge! I feel a little bit freer now, and I’m so excited to relearn how to have peanut butter without guilt! I will miss some of the psych tricks they offer, but I feel like I have read books with a larger impact and less stress.
Could you review Brittany dawn’s diet?:) I’d love to hear your opinion
Those that said they’re not preoccupied with food during prep are liars
LADY, YOU PROMOTED SUPPLEMENTS! And now you’re saying that most of them are dangerous
I’m sorry you lost me with the whole “ supplements is not necessary or work” right after you promoted your promo code for supplements? so you are promoting something that is dangerous and or unnecessary. You always shame women for wanting to do anything that isn’t body positive.. you promote intuitive eating then judge people for not eating a well balanced diet? At this point you need to pick a side. You are either a dietitian or health at every size… you either promote a well-balanced diet or you promote intuitive eating YOU CANT Be BOTH.. it’s so sad because you are confusing young women. I understand you don’t want to step on any toes but every video is contradicting each other.
Could you do a video on exercise recommendations and diet recommendations for females missing their periods?
Great video as per usual Could you make a video on ulcerative colitis and which diet is best? Thanks!
You need to review Jaclyn Hill’s problematic Pantry video on YouTube. It’s nuts literally.
Abbey, great videos! Could you review the recipes of Skinny Recipes. I love Indian cooking. I love to know if I get all the nutrients and vitamins if I would cook anything from Skinny Recipes.
Hello Abbey! I love your content! You have been helping me so much to be gentler on myself and my eating habits. I watched a video from The Try Guys ( I love how funny they are) called “I Got A Six Pack In Six Weeks” and I was sad to see the diet culture talk. Could you please react to their video?:)
Just because you graduated college doesn’t mean you understand how man-made, imported, unnatural, gov’t subsidized, GMO foods and their connection to the pharmaceutical industry works. You’ll never reveal your medical conditions that brought you to this profession. We’ll never see your supplements or medication or learn about your auto-immune deficiencies and skin issues caused from your calcified, inflammatory, toxic, anti-nutrient vegetable, fruit, seeds, nuts and grains diet. All You Tube is full of frauds. You are correct about one thing, this is for entertainment purposes only. Unfortunately, your followers will take your advice because they are looking for a cure. It will never occur to them that you will ruin their digestion and make them sicker. I guess we all have to make money somehow.
Do a video in the obese people doing mukbangs. They are intuitively eating all the junk they want
Hi Abbie,
I know you’ve spoken about intermittent fasting some time ago and throughout some reviews, but I’d love to know your opinion on the “warrior diet” or an IF without caloric deficit, with a smaller eating window. For ex, a 4-5h one, where people eat all or most of their calories for the day in that window, without being in a caloric deficit or even being at a surplus. To add here, that those calories would come from enough protein and fat, as well as carbs, without any eliminations.
There are loads of claims that this helps with both muscle building and fat mobilisation. But, most importantly, I would love to know if there is any impact on nutrient (macro and micro) absorption, as I can’t find any proper research on that. Can the body absorb everything in that window? A lot of people use this as lifestyle, rather than a short term diet for weight loss, so does the body adapt? What could be the implications in the long run?
I know how you feel about restriction and small eating windows, but I really think that, for some people, this way of eating works intuitively.
Thanks! All the love to you!
Seems like a lot to put your body through, but if you know the risks then it’s really your choice
Channel review suggestion: heyplain. She’s a Korean YouTube who mostly posts weightloss videos and it’s a tad bit disturbing tbh. I thought you might find it interesting
I have seen a lot of female fitness influencers who say that they got their body from years of bulking and then a period of cutting. I was wondering if this is the only way to get the “perfect” athletic/muscular yet lean body? I really want to look more athletic and lean, but I don’t know if it is worth years of bulking and constantly counting calories… Would love to hear your opinion on this:)
Completely besides the point Abbey, your shirt is so beautiful! Where did you get it (fellow Canadian shopper here)?
Ok, back to the actual video!
Your views, your channels facts and content has become incredibly biased.
I’ve been watching all of your videos and love your focus on eating intuitively with healthy habits in mind! You should review the new “DoFasting” app I keep seeing. I took their little quiz and it said loosing 25 lbs in a month and eating 966-1266 calories a day was healthy for me! Would love to hear your thoughts on this app now.
I just want a non-diet-y health app that helps keep me engaged because with adhd I do need that structure, but I have no interest in an app that is gonna ask me what my goal weight is. Lol like, I don’t even keep a scale, I just want to eat healthy and be strong.
My goodness you really have no idea about fitness nutrition, your either extremely naive or down right stupid, who has ever said that a prep diet is healthy apart from reading some books you really have zero experience as a sports nutritionist or a fitness coach.
THIS IS THE VIDEO I HAVE DREAMED OF! I remember commenting an an older video requesting something like this and I think you absolutely smashed it! Love your work gurl ❤️❤️❤️
We’re all excited for your
Family and can’t wait to meet little Miss Axe! Love and Prayers.
Abbey, have you talked about blogilates yet? I ended up having disordered eating and also overexercising while following her meal and workout plans years ago. I’m not blaming her of course but.. years later I look back at her video titles and they’re triggering. I heard she’s doing a 7 day ab challenge currently and I’m concerned.
Please, please review the try guys “I got a six pack in six weeks”.
One of the things that bothers me about NOOM is the price point even if you did get a personalized experience. If someone wants to be healthier and understand the reasons for unhealthy habits, I think that money would be better spent towards some kind of counseling. I decided to start focusing on body and mind HEALTH rather than have certain goals and what a difference! Weight loss has just been a byproduct of me sorting things out from within. It just seems like so much money that could go to something that encompasses more than just food.
Hi Abbey! I was wondering if you could make a video about safe intentional weight gain. Because wanting to gain weight is a lot less common, there’s not a whole lot of information I’ve been able to find besides “be in a calorie surplus”. I’ve tried, but I just am not hungry enough to meet those goals and I don’t want to develop a negative relationship with food by forcefeeding myself. I’ve always been super skinny and I’d love to gain some weight in a healthy way.
Thank you so much for doing a video on this. I tired Noom about a year ago and the daily weigh-ins and calorie counting triggered some disordered eating for me. I began obsessing over my weight and starving myself to meet goals. Thankfully, YouTube channels like yours made me realize how unhealthy this was and I got out. It could have been very bad though.
I was gifted a four month noom subscription and lost 24 lbs (YIKES). I consistently expressed my distress over “going over” on calories and red foods, and was sent back to quizzes to “reteach me”. However, nobody was willing to help me understand why I was having such a problem with assigning moral values to food. Anyway, my health went south (unrelated) and when i told my health coach I wouldn’t be renewing because of my illness, they pressured me to keep the subscription and told me if i lost more weight i might feel better. Soon as I left the app i gained all of it back with an extra bit.
My friend told me her trainer got infertility due to the supplements she took during Judo competitions. Sad.
hey abbey, can you review Jordan shrinks what i eat in a day videos please
As a bodybuilder, I can confidently say that weightlifting saved me from being anorexic. Not every bodybuilder is obsessed or unhealthy and not every bodybuilder is enhanced. Stop the health shaming culture.
Nice message abbey I love your vids all, I watch them from beginning until the end the longer the better, I love all of your real talk vids and reviews! ❤❤❤
I also have a dieting and (not professional) bodybuilding past and struggled a lot with binge eating habits for years… I think the fitness bubble and extreme restrictive eating was a big part on the path to disordered eating… today I watch all your videos and try to spread love and a body positive message… but love lifting for fun and strength and the good feeling more than ever before ❤❤❤
I considered applying for Noom before seeing this video. What caught my eye initially was their promotion of “sustainable weight loss.” After watching your video, I’m not applying there anymore. Thanks, Abbey.
Dear Dr. Chelsea Axe, thank you both so much for all your videos! I have different, but related question: Are there any dietary measures/supplements with which you can delay menopause and still get pregnant in your later years (I’m 40)? I was ill, underwent therapy with heavy medication (4 years have past since then, so I guess I’d be safe for conception now), lost my job now and I’m single (Christian). Any operative procedure is not an option for me. Any ideas would be deeply appreciated.
Abbey Sharp can you please make a video why people who eat animal products look so swollen and have trouble with weight loss? Thanks!
I used to do hobby Bodybuilding. I would’ve never been able to go on a stage. But at one point I chose my health over the Sport and the look I’ll never achieve. You’re never satisfied. I still enjoy weight lifting a lot.
Lots of women who have been anorexic turn to bodybuilding. So some of those behaviors have been there before.
I know you touched a little bit in this video, but can you do a video about hormone imbalances and food?
Hi Abbey. I love your channel. Thanks for this great video. I have a request…could you please review Romee Strijd what i eat in a day? i ask because in her latest video she said that she lost her period for six years because of her restrictive diet, and I’m curious on your thoughts on her What i eat in a day videos. Thank you and stay safe!!! <3
I feel like this app is treating people like a bunch of uneducated sheep. Just count your calories and stay in calorie deficit it’s 3rd grade math, you don’t need a paid app for this! Weight loss motivation comes from consistent commitment to better yourself!
Just great info!! Thank you!!
I love lifting because it helps my mental health so much as well as has gotten rid of my back pain. I eat intuitively and lifting makes me HUNGRY!! like 3 breakfasts hungry I cannot imagine cutting and restricting and diretics. I would feel awful! Scary stuff!
You talking about supplement that can do harm to individual bodybuilder and WHY are you promoting the SNACK SUPPLEMENTS? That supplement that you promoting had anabolic in it they just not put it in the label.
I have some friends that compete & I just don’t understand why fitness competitions claim this is the “peak fitness body” when it’s really unhealthy to be stage ready. Thank you for speaking on this!
Hey, doctor of metabolic medicine here! just FYI, Female athlete triad is actually being considered as an outdated concept now. Professionals are actually moving towards RED-S (relative energy deficiency in sport) as a broader syndrome more accurately encapsulating the problems associated with energy imbalances. BJSM have some interesting papers which I suggest you check out!
Can you do a video on intuitive eating nutrition when participating in high volume exercise athlete programmes, where you are training 2 to 5 hours a day, such as swimming, gymnastics, athletics etc.
What about post pregnancy and breastfeeding moms supplements?
Re: basically binge-eating after the show — yes, this can definitely happen. But you didn’t mention reverse dieting, which a good coach will always prescribe (unless in extreme circumstances, in which the athlete needs to eat much more IMMEDIATELY). Reverse dieting is the process of slowly ramping up calories immediately post-show, in order to minimize excessive fat gain, as well as to allow the athlete to mentally adjust to the weight gain, rather than subjecting them to gaining a lot of weight quickly, which can be taxing on one’s mental well-being. I also want to say that I don’t think any bodybuilder would suggest getting stage lean is optimal for long-term health or healthy, in general.
Why are you promoting the SNACK supplement we don’t know what’s in it as well if you opposed supplement your not supposed to promote any supplement product.
I am currently doing Noom, and frankly I have to disagree. I love that it gives me an easy guide to watch my portions and chill out on sweets and desserts. It also has encouraged me to be more active and watch my steps per day, and I am getting more veggies in but I don’t feel the need to completely eliminate red foods. I love your channel but not everyone is at risk for orthorexia.
It’s kind of a bummer that there are some BS nutrition “coaches” out there taking advantage of people who want to compete who don’t know what they are doing but honestly….there are also a huge handful of very well researched and respected (and professionally qualified/certified) nutrition coaches/trainers and even dietitians who are fantastic coaches who do this sport RIGHT. I myself am a body builder (NPC Bikini) and an RD and I have come a long way in my history of competing and I do think Abbey is right by bringing up all these things though because unfortunately, body building is so easy to just start because literally all you need is money to afford a coach and all the crap a long with it. Some coaches out there don’t give two shits about what your mental relationship is with food so long as theyre getting money (which yes, is TERRIBLE!!!). But I really feel like she should have an interview with like Paul Revalia (who isnt even a sports RD but might as well be because he is absolutely intelligent in regards to sports nutrition-wayyy smarter than me!) or something to talk about how it can done from an evidenced based and scientific approach. Also, I think something needs to be said about the fact that people are forgetting that body building, especially at a the PRO level, is a SPORT! And sorry but any competitive athlete is going to have to subject themselves to “unhealthy” amounts of training and dieting in order to perform well. People who work out like 3 times a week and have never tracked a macro should NOT decide to randomly do a bikini show just because they want abs because that is a drastic change from their current lifestyle was and that is just begging for disaster. But all said in done, I think everything Abbey said is true and it while it doesn’t shine the most positive light on body building, she’s not wrong in saying that all of these things happen to UN experienced newbie competitors who has shitty coaches.
First comment (ever!). I love your channel Abbey and never misses a video. I love bodybuilding but I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that I may never be a competitor although I would love to. I’m slowly recovering from deep-rooted disordered eating and I know that going into prep would likely put me back there. That being said, a lot of progress has been made in managing nutrition for bodybuilding athletes to try and limit the negative impact of prep on metabolism. Things like refeeds or diet breaks during prep, reverse dieting (slowly increasing calories and metabolism) after a show, flexible dieting instead of meal plans. There will always be a negative side to bodybuilding, whether you’re a competitor or just an enthusiast, but it’s good to see the sport evolve in a positive direction.
Great content as always! Would you review Alexia Clark? Wishing you health for you and your little one and thank you for the great work you do! Warm greetings from Italy!
I’ve also noticed that a lot of bodybuilding coaches promote “If It Fit Your Macros” as a valid tool to help their coaching. Doesn’t seem like there’s any evidence to suggest that it’s actually been tested in an RCT. Every macro calculator I’ve used promotes around 30% of intake from protein or 2.2g’/kg body weight per day, seems like too much of a one size fits all approach. As a vegetarian, I would have to have at least 3 scoops of protein powder a day to meet that with a balanced diet and minimal supplementation due to the lack of high quality protein sources in my diet! Anyway, enjoyed your video as a lot of bodybuilders don’t talk about the downsides of competing and it’s always refreshing to get a dietitian’s take on it!
As a female bodybuilding competitor and a health care professional I completely agree….yet disagree. I agree that bodybuilding if done for the wrong reasons ie as a way to lean down and stay lean or do short and very drastic preps you’re asking for trouble. People end up taking drastic measures which causes more harm to their bodies in the long term than they realise, plus is causes significant mental disruptions. However Bodybuilding if done right with an experienced coach will a) spend time to learn your body and nutrition b) ensure yours physically and mentally ready to prep c) do longer preps so that you can slowly lose the weight without cutting food to drastic levels I don’t see bodybuilding being negative towards health.
I get my bloods done regularly and I always go on a 16 week prep, I’m just about to do a virtual show next week as my actual show was cancelled, and I’m not hungry and I’m not doing nearly as much cardio as previous “coaches” were telling me to do.
People need to do significant research on the federations they compete in to see if that look is achievable and do a lot of research on coaches to ensure they know what they’re doing,
Supplement wise….that’s exactly what they are supplements. They aid you in your goal but people think it’s a magic pill that will do the work for you.
Post show binges…well we all enjoy one or two donuts post stage time however if you’ve prepped slowly and well you should find that you don’t crave junk food as hopefully you should have had plenty of refeed meals to lower cortisol boost mood and energy and initially limit those cravings. Then many competitors go back to their maintenance calories and cut all cardio straight after their show which also causes huge issues. Ideally they need to slowly reverse their diet so that their body can recover and not gain all the weight too quickly however if a competitor goes too hard with prep they’ll likely break loose post show…..it’s a huge yo-yo effect and nothing good comes from it
Bottom line any sport has problems but it’s how to tackle them and prevent those problems ensures the sport you do is healthy or not.
I love weight lifting. I resonate with everything in this video. You have helped me so much find peace and balance around food but it is an ongoing process to create new thought patterns about myself and my physique. Thank you for what you do.
Normally I like Abbey’s reviews, but I think this one is off based. I have used Noom and a large component of the system involves reading brief provided articles on nutrition and craving-control. Then they quiz you on the information. They make many qualifiers to their red-yell-green food system in the reading material. They explain that it’s just a shorthand, and that a food can still sometimes be healthy even if it’s classified as yellow or red. It’s a practical system based on caloric density. Yes, some people can take it too far, but I this app has been very helpful to lots of people. Pay attn to caloric density is a sensible way to lose weight and maintain that weight loss. Noom promotes eating mostly veggies and some healthy fats. If you don’t want to lose weight and only maintain weight, then eating more calories of still healthy food is not a bad or unhealthy strategy. I get that you are “pro-food” and “anti-food shaming” but this review seems like it has an ax to gring. Noom works and is safe, healthy, and even educational for large majorities of the population.
This video is informed consent. I hope anyone wanting to compete will listen.
I really recommend checking out Chikara Transformations here on You Tube. Not analysing or picking her apart, but just listening to her experiences as she is a current bodybuilder who is really vocal and honest about her journey.
i mean…they could do just find if they followed dr greg doucette
I was planning on doing a bodybuilding Competition this year, but with COVID I decided to postpone it to next year. Before post poning it I was see a registered Dietitian to create my meals, and before I agreed to go through her she shared that there is not a healthy way to do bodybuilding Competitions and be competitive. She said sure you can look great but getting to top 5 in the healthy way was not possible. Healthy as far as food, water, supplements and not taking drugs like HGH or steroids (what the top competitors are doing).
Could you do a video on nutrition related information for trans and non-binary peeps and whoever else who’s hormones are changed? I’ve heard of a fellow transman who broke his arm from a casual arm wrestling game. As a person who’s been on testosterone for 9 years, and have not had ovaries for 8, I want to know how it might effect nutritional requirements and what deficiencies I should be aware of
Why dont you do the same vid on HAES with all the scientific evidence, that obesity is unhealthy? lets face it, being 100 lb owerweight makes you unhealthy but your pandering to the bodyposi movement, will make that vid almost impossible to make…
The best medicine for arthritis is becoming a vegan. I know.
Thank you, I’m dealing with soreness and stiffiness. It hurt to get on my knees
In my mid forties I was the victim of crippling OA. The Dr told me there was no cure and was going to put me on cortisone ‘to buy me some time’. However, I met a person who convinced me to try a whole food plant based diet for just ninety days before filling the prescription. I turn seventy eight this year, have no OA nor any of the allergies I used to suffer with, am still following the lifestyle, never filled the prescription nor returned to the Dr(?). Peace
Oh my God you’re seriously telling ppl to eat this stuff! You’re going to be overweight and have diabetes but your brain will be good. Ha ha! Yeah right!
it is no mpre than 400 mcg of folic acid or methylfolate. you can eat more found naturally in foods. no, not fortified although it is okay to eat those sparingly if it has a lot of folic acid
Dr.. is it safe for pregnant women to use bone broth powder..and is there any interference with turmeric and cinammon..thank you
Please do morbid obesity. And address healthy in every size regarding morbidly obese people.
well I’m 15 weeks and 2 days, I’m afraid it’s to late,in taking baby and me 2 and it doesn’t have folate in it worried it’s to late
I just bought the prenatal today at Whole Foods. It was on sale!
Shouts out to the Megan Bowen’s vegan fitness model journey in Korea!!!
Also pleeeeease do an episode on Eddie Hall’s eating challenges lolol the one where he swaps with his wife is HILARIOUS, and she’s a total champ.
What would you suggest for low hemoglobin during pregnancy? Mine is 9.4
Thank you!
Abbey please do a video on how to fit in the recommended 8-10 servings of veggies/day and what a serving looks like. Also what to do when you don’t always feel like eating veggies for breakfast? I love vegetables, but don’t always feel like eating them in the morning.
Is it ok to take the Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen pulls instead?
Should I be taking a choline supplement as well? It was mentioned on the Dr. Axe website in an article about prenatal supplements but it wasn’t mentioned in the video. Also calcium. Most prenatals don’t have very much at all but it was also mentioned in the article as being crucial.
Your ancient nutrition prenatal doesn’t have any choline, why is that?
I was so happy to follow your pregnancy along with mines but with a few hiccups that did not happen. My due date was at the end of April. Due to an incompetent cervix and later a prolapsed umbilical cord my daughter was born 15 weeks early. What are your recommendations supplements on a vegan diet?
Girl I do not like salmon or fishy fish either and sometimes omegas will make me burp fish and I’m like…NOPE! Lol Everyone in my family loves salmon and I am a cod girl. Best wishes in your pregnancy. We did a holistic pregnancy and home birth too. It is AMAZING and SO empowering!!! ❤️
So I called MegaFood regarding their Blood Builder since I’ve been taking it as recommended from above for almost a month! . Please please please do NOT take this product as recommended. If you have MTHFR (like I do AND like 80% of the population) you will NOT be able to covert the folic acid that is in the NON-methylated product into folate so you will be creating a toxic environment for you and your growing baby that can put you at a higher risk for preeclampsia, miscarriages and birth defects!!!!
i noticed that it also overestimates the amount of calories in foods…..it put me on 1300 i think, and I do use a tracking app which i was measuring up nooms tracking against. In reality, when I had reached 1300kcal on noom, it was only about 1000 on cronometer. I was also surprised by this severe caloric deficit….my maintainence calories are 2150….so it was less than half of what i need.
If you don’t have a gallbladder is it safe to take ox bile during pregnancy??? I can’t find any Info on this. Thanks so much in advance!
This was wonderful! I would love to see a “what I eat in a day”
I’d love to see what u eat in a day video, that would be really helpful.
Thanks so much for sharing I ordered everything you are taking. We are in a process of an IUI and I want to be prepared for everything. It’s been eight years of infertility and this is very important to me. Thanks again and may God bless you and your family always
Yasss!! I’ve been patiently waiting for this video as I’m 11 weeks pregnant with baby number five ❤ Will be ordering some of these supplements as I love the Ancient Nutrition brand!!
Hey Abbey! I don’t usually comment on you videos but I enjoy every single one of them! I would like to make a video request. Due to my ED which I used to have for almost three years and now I finally feel I have overcome, my metabolism has significantly slowed down, I almost never feel hungry and if I eat more than twice a day I feel extremely bloated. Could you please make a video about ‘fixing’ your metabolism and getting it back to normal after having an ED? It would tremendously help me and many others that experience the same thing! Thank you again so much for all this beautiful content! Greetings from Greece!
Ancient nutrition’s prenatal is my ABSOLUTE favorite!!! I recommend it to everyone looking for one. I never felt better than when taking it! I also love that it has ginger in it and makes it much easier to take and decreases nausea!
Does your turmeric include black pepper extract and is it organic?
The ancient nutrition prenatals and the magnesium are a winner. We use both of those products. I am going to get the SBO probiotic as well
I didn’t know you had a prenatal! Buying that today, I’m 5 weeks:) thanks for all the info!!!
Thank you! I have definitely felt taking magnesium has really helped me this pregnancy!
YES!!!! I’ve been waiting for this video!! I take the Ancient Nutrition Prenatals and I can tell I absorb them well! Such an awesome product! Thanks for this info y’all!!!
Everytime I used prenatal vitamins they prescribed me, they made me sick
I tried to use noom as it claimed to be a “lifestyle” based diet change. Ended up just straight up triggering my ED. Completely tone deaf and clearly not well researched.
Good thing I watched this video before trying it out! WOW, their marketing message seems to be the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what they actually do.
As a new RD, I have to say: THANK YOU!! After spending most of my training learning disease-based MNT (which is what I signed up for, and I loved it!), it’s been really great to hear your thoughts about the more popular/trendy side of things that folks often ask about, and gives me ideas on topics to read up on while I job hunt:D
I tried Noom for a grand total of three days. I asked to lose weight slowly so I could incorporate the new habits the lauded “Noom advisors” were going to teach me. After filling everything out, I noticed they put me on 1,200 calories a day. Insane! My advisor was slow to get back to me, and when she did, her responses sounded canned. I was able to bump up my daily calorie count to 1,400, which was still too little. I was also surprised when an 8 oz. serving of Very Veggie and a sensible portion of almonds, came back as “red” foods. Sure, the colors are supposedly to act as guides, but who doesn’t feel discouraged by a red light for healthy foods? I discovered Noom works on Volumetrics, so filling up on watery veggies and fruits got you praise, and nutrient-dense foods like avocado got you the old stink eye.The quizzes were condescending. I’m glad I saw the light early, or I might have spent the $130 and stuck with it, only to feel like a failure when all by 7% of my weightloss came back. Just a sham.
Loved this video! I enjoyed listening to what you had to say and agree with a lot of it. I love body building and creating a fun way to exercise to not only look good but most importantly, to feel good. Competing in this sport would be unhealthy for me but I enjoy seeing others’ transformation photos and hearing individual stories. I would like to see a healthier approach without extreme measures to achieve a muscular build.
10ltrs of water a day. bull shit. get your info right lady before you run your ingorant mouth. and your finale comments said it all.. a sports dietitian you are not. nor an athlete for that matter
Keep in mind that some females (me included) are a lot more suseptible to losing their period. Some women say they lift 6 times a week and have their period while I lost my period when I trained 4 times a week. Also you dont lose your period only when you diet hard, studies show you can lose it with a 500 calorie deficit. Being at a healthy body fat range FOR YOU is really important(for me 25%+). Everyone has a different set point weight.
Boom ads are so damn annoying. I hate companies thst don’t bother to make ads specific for their target country. As an Australian I can’t stand ads with annoying American accents about being a ‘3rd generation candy maker’
That blouce/ dress looks wonderful on you! Thank you for reviewing apps like these. I cant express how helpful your videos are for someone like me whose trying to live a healthier life style.
What are your recommendations for someone with pancreatitis (currently taking prescribed enzymes)? What to eat and what to avoid? Doctors office is not well educated in nutrition and its very frustrating.
abbey it would be great if you could do a review on ‘lumen’ i keep seeing it come up on adverts on youtube!
Oh you can eat nuts, nubutter and avocados and whatnot, but in moderation. That’s the beauty of Noom, it teaches moderation.
I wish I had found your video before signing up for the “Free Trial” which they try to shame you into spending $18.37 for and then immediately try to get you to purchase “add Ons” before finally telling you that the program will cost $$ per month automatically collected on the last day of your trial. I will probably (no definitely) cancel before the deadline and this still leaves me searching. I am definitely not a millenial (my charecature actually looks alot like me) as I will be 69 in October. I have been managing my Type 2 diabetes quite well (last A1c was 6.5) and I also have a cancer and heart history. Prostate cancer 2017 and a triple bypass in 2018. Last week a biopsy on my spine which thankfully showed no metastatic bone disease although I did end up with a punctured lung in the process. I have access to two “Registered Dieticians” like yourself in my area. One associated with my Endocrinologist and the other at our local Cancer Center, so I will again try to get some assistance from those wonderful ladies. Trying to get help though it seems, is definitely not an easy task. Or at least not a task that anyone wants to undertake. All of my doctors tell me I need to loose weight (5’7″ 217 lbs) mostly belly fat. I tell them, great how do I do that and none of them are able to devise a plan for me. Anyway thanks for the great video, I already got the book recomendation on my Phone Kindle app. Best wishes to you keep up the good work of education all of us.
I never know whether to like or dislike your videos because I always agree with your main point but not many of the points you make in support of it LOL
Would you ever consider taking a look at Chronometer? I know it’s not as popular as MFP and NOOM, but it’s less moralizing and I’ve found it really helpful. You can tell it not to show you certain things and it also tracks micronutrients! I used to use it to make sure I was getting enough iron and B12 while I got the hang of vegan IE.
Take a drink every time she uses air quotes.
Just kidding. Love you Abbey!
For some reason both of the “dieting/fitness” apps I downloaded showed 1200 calories a day and both mentioned that your actual weight/goals didn’t impact the calorie count… my mother is trying something and it also quoted her 1200 calories… it seems like these apps just seem to think that women should only eat 1200.
I weigh myself every day and I’m happy about it because it motivates me. Because I’m actually losing weight, but I’m not hungry either. And so it’s nice to see the progress I don’t know why that is so wrong.
I was ready to invest some money into this app and one of the first requirements is to weigh yourself everyday. That’s when I immediately quit. Nothing worse than weighing yourself and obsessing over a number that really does not mean anything, especially having had an eating disorder.
I struggled with Noom because I have to cook from scratch because of allergies and it was pretty fast for me to lose all my “red” budget on healthy fats leaving no room for anything but cooking oil (mainly olive and avocado) and a bit of nuts.
You and Keltie O’Connor are changing the game when it comes to relationships with food.
She helped me so much to accept my weight and to accept that I will want “soul food” sometimes. I havent gone on a food binge in 3 months now and have consistently lost weight as a side effect of not stressing so hard about food.
You two are chef kisses fantastic!
I tried noom as an alternative to Myfitnesspal, hoping it wouldn’t be calorie centric. As someone who struggles with BED and a “recovering dieter” calorie counting, restricting, regular weigh-ins, labeling foods good/bad, are all things I’m trying to avoid. But right away, they encourage you to weigh in every day to “overcome fear of the scale” and even though they said “red foods aren’t bad foods” I could not get over the red/yellow/green associations. It’s just another diet app under disguise.
I like noom. So far I have learned a lot. It’s not a bad thing to weigh daily. I have tried a lot of diets. Noom helped to remind me of something’s I forgot. I see it as promoting increased activity with limiting your intake, And so far I have lost 7 lbs lbs in one month. So Abbey what do you suggest. To help people lose weight. The only thing wrong with noom is it cost to much.
Thank GOD, Abbey! I always get Noom ads before your videos and they are so grossly rooted in diet culture.
They gave me a full refund halfway through the program no questions asked which is nice.
Nuts/Seeds/Oils can be really healthy when you eat the right portion size for your weight/physical activity level and definitely shouldn’t be labeled bad foods. Our bodies need a certain amount of fat.
Abbey, why do you use air quotes that much? There are really worse apps than Noom in my opinion, but you seem really critical. It’s pretty hard to make solid nutrition advices without offending or annoying someone if you have such high standards
The traffic light system has been around for such a long time. Over a decade ago it was recommended to my SIL for her pre-diabetic daughter as an easy system to help guide the child to what foods she should be choosing. It didn’t help for them but I can’t say why or why not. I agree with you that this is just another way to implement diet rules.
You should review r/loseit (on Reddit) next! Lots of advice on there and I’d be curious to know your thoughts!
How did this not pop up on my recommended sooner? I was waiting for this video!
I never tried Noom, but I did Weight Watchers a few years back and it did work…until it didn’t. Basically as my weight went down my caloric intake (which was on a “points” system, but it’s pretty much the same concept) kept going down and down, until it was so restrictive it was basically like the 1200 calorie plan you detailed. My weight goal was set at 120, which being 5’0 isn’t I guess unrealistic, but I personally think my “set point” is higher. I started at about 170, I got down to about 130ish and then started slowly gaining it back. Got frustrated and quit and then gained it back shockingly fast. I’m now heavy beyond where I started, which is super frustrating. Now I’m just trying to eat more fruit and veggies and started walking with my husband most mornings. Not sure if I’ve lost much weight, but I physically feel better, so maybe that’s more important? I do wish I knew the secrets of those “effortlessly thin” people, but I’ve never been one of them.
Thanks for the helpful video. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Lumen. Please do a breakdown of whether Lumen could actually help tweak metabolism.
Great video! Love your channel! Would you review Alexandra’s Happy Body Plan?
I used this app back in high school when it first came out. It was awful. I ended up eating the lowest calorie possible meals which led to me binging at night. It made me feel so bad about myself so I would exercise hard. Now I’ll use Cronometer on ocassion to make sure my diet isn’t deficient in anything (because I’m vegan) and I exercise often but workouts I enjoy to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I tried Noom back in about 2017, and it was a DISASTER. I think the coach you showed was actually one of my coaches, and I only spoke to her the day she introduced herself and the day I cancelled. The program was a mess because they were in the middle of “updating” the program. Different users had different content, and the coaches had no way of knowing who had what even though everyone in the coaching groups supposedly started the program the same day. It’s a complete mess.
I tried Noom and it triggered my past of disordered eating within the first couple of weeks. I immediately stopped using it because I am not going down that route again. Just glad I recognized it and my boyfriend even knows how to recognize if I ever “fall back in” to old habits.
If something ever tells me to count individual pieces of broccoli, then count me out, man.
I wish I’d seen this video a few weeks ago before start the trip and struggling to get the unexpected £109 payment back!! Red foods and 1200 calories with daily weigh-ins? Not for me! The app says one thing and implements another in my opinion.
I wish you would review the Naturally Slim program. I found it really troubling for a number of reasons. My husband’s company offered it to him as a perk of his insurance, but it had almost a cult like feeling, and some suggestions (like guzzling super diluted orange juice, avoiding all sugar, using a meal timer) upsetting.
im an RD2B and I did the free trial on this app just to see what it was all about. I found it relied heavily on the psychology aspect of things, which was interesting. I was really turned off that it wanted daily weigh insNOT what I learned.
I’m on week 7 with Noom. Its the only “diet ” that has helped me mentally. Sure, 1200 calories is hard for me at times but I’m learning more about food/behavior. I’ve only lost 10lbs so far but I’m okay with slow progress because at least I’m losing and gaining more long term goals. I love the psychology of Noom. The Cons are price, lack of coaching and database of food varies. I’m sticking to Noom
Hi Abby! Love the video! I recently came across an app called Little Moochi targeted towards helping kids develop healthy eating habits. It claims to be safe by focusing on the benefits of food, not calories. Also, their little character is SOOO cute. I’d love to hear your thoughts
Their website is: http://www.littlemoochi.com
I am currently using it. Some of the early readings were helpful and helped me understand how to fuel myself better. I don’t really pay attention to the colored foods, so I just eat what I want. It holds me accountable in a way I have struggled to do on my own. I also understand the daily weigh ins because Noom talks about how your weight fluctuates in life, so it’s important to get comfortable with it. It’s definitely not worth the money bc I can do the food tracking by myself. I already paid for 3 months tho, so we’re gonna stick with it for the last month
I signed up for Noom and I was immediately triggered by it and cancelled.I CANNOT weigh myself daily.
Based on this video and people’s comments, it seems like noom works great for people who don’t know anything about nutrition and are likely eating lots of unhealthy foods and large portions. It seems like it helps people understand what a balanced diet is and how to eat healthier while still incorporating your favorites. Typical weight loss issues like eating better foods and eating appropriate portions will help some people, but a lot of people are struggling with weight loss for reasons other than that. Personally, I gained a lot of weight on a medication I was taking and I’m struggling to lose it. It doesn’t sound like noom would help someone like me, because my issue isn’t large portions or junk food and I already understand nutrition.
i used to starve myself and i couldnt finish the trial for noom because it reminded me of troubling times
I signed up for the trial period and only stayed on for like, 1 day. I didn’t have a scale at home (at the time) and the prompts to make sure I weighed myself were frustrating, plus the first time I entered a food and it turned read (I don’t even think it was something really “bad”, just high in good fats) I felt so bad that I had to delete it immediately. Following you helped me to know immediately that the app wasn’t for me honestly, and if it wasn’t for you I might have let myself feel guilty about that red food.
It is interesting to see how the desired body image changed, even during the last 10 years. In 2010-2011 I remember this thing, called thinspo was trending all over tumblr. Everybody wanted to be skinny. The skinnier, the better. This was also the time when my eating disorder started. I couldn’t stop comparing myself to models like VS angels. I’m a tall girl and I was obsessed with becoming the same weight as they are (with that desired weight my BMI would be around 17…) During the last couple years fit became the new skinny. Fit with a big butt. However it is just as dangerous as skinny used to be. Now I compare myself to fitness models and influencers and I always have to remind myself that some of these girls used to be athletes! How can I compare with that?! It is (or it used to be) their job to keep their body in shape. It is very hard to let this idea (the idea of the perfect body) go and instead of chasing the impossible accept the fact that you just can’t have a 6 pack and 12% body fat all year around.
An ad for Noom came on before this video lol. I signed up for Noom last year and hated it. The green, yellow, red food coding was such a joke
To be fair, I think everyone knows that competing in bodybuilding is an activity that people choose to engage with for other reasons than its health benefits. And I don’t think people think of professional bodybuilders as particularly healthy, in fact, they themselves recognize how extreme and challenging this lifestyle can be which doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be pursued. I have the biggest respect for bodybuilders and practice weight training myself, and I think it’s great that women get the message that it can be beneficial for them too. But competing is a whole different story (again nothing at all against it).
Would it be possible for you to do a review of the Fitbit app or Fitbit premium?
But couldn’t the discussion about long term results apply to any diet? I know the long term results of specific diets are poor. The medical weight management clinic I go to discusses behaviours that have been associated with better long term control such as regular journaling.
There was literally a Noom ad at the beginning of this video! Lol, thanks a lot YouTube!
You couldn’t make this a shorter video & get straight to the point?
I downloaded it, and it told me that I should eat 1300 calories per day. For reference, I am a 5’9″, large-framed woman with a fair amount of muscle. At the time (pre-quarantine), I was working out 3-4x per week.
Yeah, I’m never going to eat only 1300 calories per day. I immediately cancelled it and sent them a note because of it.
Edited to add: I should say that I do use My Fitness Pal, because I haven’t been able to successfully use IE. I do use macro/nutrient counting (and therefore calories, but less important to me), but MFP allows me to set it rather than go through a set program on something that doesn’t know my body like I do.
I’d love to hear your opinion on the Ate app! I’ve been using it for about a week and I really like it! It’s really just a mindfulness food journal which is way more my style and different than any other “health” app I’ve seen.
Review Whole Life Challange Diet? The vegetarian version of it wrecked my digestion.
I find my fitness pal is better. I find some people who have a knack for overeating unhealthier foods need something to keep them on track to eating healthier. I’ve been using it for years because I was taught to overeat being forced to finish my plate. Now I try to make sure I’m getting an adequate source of protein, fibre, healthy fats and nutrient dense fruits and vegetables. That does not mean I don’t eat any treats or deny myself. It’s just I’ve realized my body feels way more satisfied when I eat a nice healthy balanced meal. It’s more of an educational thing for me. I ended up losing 110 pounds and kept it off for about 5 years.
I wanted to do a competition about 7 years ago.. and yes, I was struggling with an eating disorder.. now, I look at women in competitions and I just don’t think it looks attractive or, more importantly, healthy. I am thankful that I didn’t compete, but I’m also thankful that the desire got me into weightlifting. I still lift weights to this day. I really enjoy lifting and feeling strong and proud of what my body can do!
Abby I thought you received basic biology classes to become a dietician? How come you don’t know that humans are animals?
I just started my Noom trial and have a few thoughts. 1. Anyone with a history of eating disorders should NOT use this app, or ANY weight loss app, in my opinion. It’s just common sense that these kinds of programs are very triggering to people with a history of EDs. That being said, 2. I actually really appreciate the Stoplight system for categorizing food. Although I agree it would have been a better idea to not label anything “red” based on the stigma it creates around eating these foods, the program does say that these red foods should be a part of your daily diet, just less than the other colors. I think you mention that the app tells you to eat mostly “green” foods, but actually it recommends a ratio where yellow foods make up the majority of your daily diet, followed by green and then red. For me, when I eat red foods, I don’t see it as “ugh I feel so guilty for eating this”. I feel more like “cool, I get to eat this kind of food every day, but need to be MINDFUL of how much of it I consume”. I definitely think the Stoplight system is meant to be about mindfulness, not restriction. 3. I think the daily weigh-ins are a good idea (again, not for people with history of EDs) because it normalizes weight fluctuations and makes weighing yourself way less of a stressful experience. For example, I weighed 2.2 pounds less on my second weigh in, which was obviously due to some sort of fluctuation relating to either bloating or digestion, not because I actually lost 2.2 pounds of fat in a day. Same thing if I were to gain weight in a day, I can acknowledge that it’s just my body fluctuating normally, NOT a failure on my part to weigh less. 4. I’m not sure at this moment if I will continue to pay if the monthly price seems to steep for me simply because I already know most of the info the app has so far taught me, and also because I don’t see myself using the coach system. There are other free apps out there that you can track your calorie deficits with, like Chronometer (which I highly recommend btw). The thing about Noom that other free programs don’t do though is it keeps me motivated and accountable by encouraging me to check in daily. Otherwise it’s super easy for me to fall off the wagon of food tracking within 2-4 weeks.
TLDR; don’t use weight loss programs if they are triggering for you, period; if you’re the kind of person who has a relatively healthy relationship with food but needs a gentle nudge to be consistent, I think this app will work for you.
I recognised the name Sophie Brewster, turns out she was a trainer at my old gym, changed a lot! Great video, thanks:)
I fell victim to all of the bro-diet tricks to get ready for my first competition. It’s what prompted me to go back to school for dietetics. Now, I’m into my 4th year of an accelerated master program and I’m a year out from my next show. A lot of competitors have very little knowledge of proper nutrition and they are only exchanging information on what worked best for this person who won or what so-and-so’s coach said will work. I’ve also found that a lot of coaches don’t have the proper credentials to offer nutrition advice, but they still do it.
I tried Noom and I actually prefer weight watchers over noom and they are cheaper too
Would love to see you review diets of influencers in larger bodies! I’ve followed your content for a long while now and I see quite a lack of diversity in your reviews. Almost all of them are of either very slim or athletic youtubers. Those content are all very informative, but they could benefit from some more inclusivity!
I’m 5’9” and I was SHOCKED when it gave me a calorie budget of 1300 calories. That is just ridiculous and not sustainable. It also made me feel shitty every time I entered olive oil and chia seeds and they weren’t considered green foods. I did value the education though. Did the 2 week trial and quit and went back to intuitive eating and feeling great.
Two principals really changed my life and they were the hardest concepts for me to understand and master. The fact that I can eat whatever I want and that I don’t have to eat anything I don’t truly want to eat. All or nonthing mentality is truly toxic and really challenging to overcome. Food is a source of joy and pleasure and we all deserve to take time everyday to remember that
Stop” “using” “inverted” “commas” “with” “your” “hands” “for” “EVERYTHING”…. Especially when talking about the”competition”… It’s really annoying… I couldn’t focus on what you actually saying because I was too busy counting the times you were using it (you used it 30 times from the beginning of the video right through to the end of answering just the first question) we get that you don’t believe any health programs… I mean obviously they are taking your actual job away. Just focus on your own career journey and promote yourself
I don’t use norm but I do use myfitnesspal and cronometer to count calories and all of my vitamins and minerals and to see what my diet is actually like. When I started using them I noticed I was not eating enough that I should have been, I wasn’t eating crazy low calories and I was never trying to but it’s helping me on my journey to gaining muscle And eating a lot healthier and getting all everything I need. These aren’t all bad and aren’t bad for everyone, noon and a few others are just horrible because they promote such garbage. But I’d love if you reviews MyFitnessPal.
I tried it and logged for a day, but when I saw that chicken and stuff like that were “yellow”, I immediately felt the urge to eat less of that to try and eat more green food. It just put a mental block against things I knew were good to eat just because they weren’t deemed “green” food… so I cancelled
You and these commenters didn’t stick to the app long enough. Many of your criticism of the app would actually be addressed had you sticked around > 3-4 months….
LOL Noom labelled my peanut butter/avocado as a red food and my venti Starbucks Latte as a green food because I used skim milk in it. smh.
For the first time in my life, I am heavier than I’d like to be by about 15 lbs. I tried Noom based on the “anti diet” marketing and discovered that calorie counting and food tracking are great ways to screw up my previously good relationship with food. The only value I found in the app was the encouragement to be mindful about snacking and other treats like dessert and alcohol.
Very informative Video! A former friend of mine is competing in Body Building here in Germany. We went to nursing school together and it was horrible to see her struggling. She went exactly through the problems you were explaining and as a former sufferer of Anorexia it was screaming disorderd eating and body dysmorphia to me. She started abusing medication like diuretics and medication to increase her Heart rate to burn more calories. She went down to a really concerning weight. I tried to reach out to her, but she didnt listen to me. She said she feels like her Body is dying and this gives her a real Kick. Worst of it all: her journey was followed and instructed by a „professional Coach“
I am very concerned for her health and i dont understand how a „sport“ can put its contestants in such a negative mind set and danger.
I know several people that swear by Weight watchers’ point system.
can you do a review of the alkaline diet? and kind of explain what foods are acidic and what they do to ur body? (i get rly nauseous when drinking coffee so i’ve been reading up on it)
I have struggled with under eating then binge eating. And Noom seems to be what works with me the best for finding balance and feeling full consistently. Also my digestion has vastly improved by just including more of the “green foods”. It’s been 4 months…so we will see long term!
I have been on Noom for over a year now. My first subscription was for four months. At renewal, I decided to renew for a year at $199.00/year. I’ve lost 15 pounds on Noom when every other diet/effort I had tried didn’t work. After the two week trial, you get a group coach and other group members. My relationship with these group members is what has kept me going. We support each other in ways I do not get from my family or friends. The group coach is actually more active and in tune to our needs and emotions than my one-on-one goal specialist. Noom helps with your “relationship “ with food. No other program has addressed this for me. Noom is cheaper than hiring a personal RD. The one time I did see an RD for help, she put me on a much more difficult program that I could not follow. Abbey, your daily meal selection was not fair in my opinion. I learned to optimize my calorie allotment. I typically would eat a three egg white omelette for breakfast with mushrooms, spinach, tomato, avocado and green onion with salsa. So good and filling! I would then eat a sandwich on lower calorie bread with lean ham, lettuce, tomato, hummus and fruit on the side and I would count out a few chips. My afternoon snack was low fat cheese stick and an apple. Dinner would be either grilled fish and salad or grilled chicken breast. This would allow me a nice dessert of low fat Greek yogurt with berries or a chocolate rice cake with Nutella and sliced strawberries. All delicious! I then try to move my body every day which would increase my calorie allotment on the app. Documenting everything I ate in a day really opened my eyes to how much I was actually consuming. I then realized why I was never able to lose weight. I love my support group! They have really helped with the struggle of trying to stay focused during this pandemic. I have had the pleasure to meet people from all over the world that I would not have otherwise met. Trying to lose weight is a life-long struggle for some. I have loved Noom and will keep it indefinitely!
I don’t think this app would be worth the money it costs. Even if they had coaches. I would prefer something that helped me make sure I was getting enough nutrients and fiber etc to make sure I’m healthy and therefore satiated. If you’re getting enough of everything you should feel full, and probably eat less calories.
I tried Noom for less than 48 hours and HATED it. I’ve currently been on Weight Watchers and freaking love it so far! Btw, WW does have a “healthy habits” options you can use that isn’t focusing on weight loss, which I find helpful!
It is so awful! They set me at 1200 calories for a day and as a nursing mom it was just impossible. It was also not user friendly to log meals. My FitnessPal is free and much more intuitive. I expected the psychology part to be really amazing based on the way it’s marketed, but it was super basic concepts. It is awful (and expensive).
I compete in powerlifting and strongman but because of how the sports are structured, we have a lot of overlap with bodybuilding and I see the behind the scenes. It isn’t all bad in bodybuilding, however you really do need to go in with eyes wide open. Even in powerlifting, there has been times where I’ve slide in to the grey area myself, purely to make sure I make weight and come in strong enough. My reproductive and general health have always reminded me of my stupidity, but I’m aware of what I’m doing and the consequences. All too many jump in with blinders to the long term health outcomes to the decisions that they make in competition.
That is what I take from this video, not blacklisting the sport, rather enter with full understanding of the pros and cons.
When I was in early recovery from my ED I worked with a former fitness competitor. She had gained some weight since her days as a competitor (and looked absolutely amazing), and I’ll never forget how obsessive she was about food, to the point where she would comment on the food choices of everyone else in the office. I was weight restoring and the constant comments about how she was so jealous that I could eat “so much” and look how I looked was extremely triggering at the time. Now looking back it makes me so sad. She was beautiful and looked to be at such a healthy weight. I hope she’s okay now.
I think the concept of calorie density can help many people with weight loss or weight maintenance. But you shouldnt categorize them as green or red. Just use the knowledge for your own gain
They put EVERYONE on 1200 calories. I was over 200 pounds and that was the amount recommended to me. Ugh.
I tried it and the coaches were no where to be found. You would message them and they get back to you like a week later. Never had a weekly check in like I paid for. It was awful!
Abby, It is really difficult to follow you with such an imbalance of your judgments. Obesity is death and illness on a time clock, for a dietitian you are largely deflating that science and severity. People should be watching you with a keen eye asking themselves, “is it because abby excuses my lack of health and overweight body that i believe her?” Not one of my school books in personal training and dietetics supports your voice abby.
Why dont you stop with the healthy folks for two weeks and actually cover the HAES community that doesnt show much progresss on lifestyle and critique them. They need you. The obese community that also is failing with goals, why not work with that in your videos.
Abby, you never seem to be choosing the people that actually need your eye on YouTube and that makes you look extremely bias.
So… I’m not at all saying it’s magic or anything. It’s an app. There are others out there that are probably just as good that cost less. However, I’m finding it helpful. I like the simplified food system it’s not overwhelming me with information. I’m mostly using it to count calories and to encourage myself to eat more fruits and veggies. I’m a 5’4″ female and I put my weight loss setting on the turtle, and my calorie budget is around 1800, and it goes up with exercise. Sometimes I eat under, sometimes over. I don’t have any history of restrictive eating disorders, but I do have a history of mindlessly eating junk and fast food, so tracking is helping me get closer to my goals. I can see where things could cause problems for people with a history of disordered eating, but for someone like me who just needs something easy to use, something that helps remind me of my goals, I think it’s pretty useful.
You mentioned a tracking app….do you have one you recommend? I’m new to your plan, but very interested in learning all the helpful aspects to make it successful.
