Those are too baggy to be running shorts in my opinion. 2inch inseam is all you need.
Just ordered the Patagonia Strider Pro shorts based on your review Ethan. Had to do it online as no local stockists here in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hoping they fit
My favorite shorts are some that are, I think, no longer manufactured; the Brooks Sherpa 2-in-1 5” shorts. The material is soft, light and breathable really complimenting the 5” inseam helping you to stay cool on longer, warmer runs. The 2-in-1 refers to the inner lining being more of a boxer brief as opposed to just a brief or bikini cut lining. The best part of that is the secret phone pocket on the right leg of this lining; paired with the snug fit around around the quad gives a stable place for your phone to prevent flopping and movement but still plenty of space in the crotch. In addition to the wonderful designated phone pocket, they have a zippered center pocket in back that is deep enough to provide plenty of storage for keys, cards, whatever lager stuff plus a stretchy mesh pocket on either side of the hip perfect for gels, snacks or whatever you want. The elastic waistband is very comfortable also featuring a drawstring to adjust the fit as needed.
Please tell Kim to make a women’s top 10 shorts! I’m always looking for recommendations. Great review thanks!
Pearl Izumi made so many legendary running products. I miss the N0 so much! Please come back to making running shoes Pearl Izumi!
Very funny! Good video thanks for the tips. I’ve used nike 5″ shorts for years but they changed the style and I don’t like them as much. I have used a flip belt for a couple years to hold my phone and love it. I use a bluetooth headset to stream pandora, cord free! Thanks again.
i still have my goto tnf better than naked from 4 years ago when they had more actual stitching in the lining than glue… the newer ones just aren’t as durable and don’t come close to how good those are. wish some of these brands would stick with the good thing and just make small color change improvements. hate the idea of shelling out 50-60$ for the new line which is a worse product
yo love your content! Keep up the great work. Canada winters are harsh but once summer comes, running is life.
Bought the Salomon shorts in my usual size Medium. I don’t know how people wear them. The liner brief sits like a g-String after 5 Minutes
These are amazing shorts, but Satisfy makes the greatest running shorts ever. Yes, they cost $150-200+, but these are maybe second or in line with Tracksmith or Craft’s Euro exclusive lineup.
i hate wasting over $20 for a pair of shorts and these links helped a lot, especially since summer is starting already and i don’t want to be wearing joggers
Picked up 4 of the TNF Better Than Naked 5″ on sale at outlet store last year. And I agree, nice and lightweight but the non-stretchy drawstring is kind of a drag. I do like ’em for the hotter weather though but I tend to also prefer my Salomon Park 2in1’s. Surprised there was no mention of Salomon’s new “modular” short system. Great video thought and keep it up!
Jogger shorts are essential for those 6 days a year we get the good weather in the UK Tommy’s are a personal fav of mine. Like the stripe down the side. Not sure how I feel about the 47 Nike logos on their new line though Great video again dude, straight fire
Right now i swtich around between Nike Flex “Oregon Project” 5′ and Fusion S50 (Sadly the S50 model is discontinued, as for now) I run mainly full marathon and half marathon both on road and on trail. But the 2 above just nail it for me
I’m 5’10” 155 lbs, wear a medium in the Strider pro, do you think I’d be a small in the Salomon Sense? (generally 31″ wasit)
Almost 10 minutes, and not once did you use the word «shortlist» as a pun. I’m equally impressed and disappointed.
Rabbit fkt 5″ by far #1 on my list. I like Patagonia strider pro but the fkt more comfortable and breathe like no others.
why don’t you for this review shorts you can store stuff in. some people Want performance and not GQ shorts with pockets.
Loved your videos for a long time… the fact that you used the clip from the “Office,” that you did…Even more loyal to your channel than I ever imagined I would be
I just picked up a pair of the North Face Better Than Naked shorts on sale at REI this weekend. Ran in them yesterday and again today. Just fantastic. There’s so much room for activities (and by that I mean food)!
Does anybody actually keep the liner on the shorts? I bought some adidas running shorts recently and I am not a fan of the liner, I usually wear compression shorts/tights when running.
Thanks for the revue, you helped me decide on the Patagonias but ordered online so I’m hoping the liner works for me. I really like Brooks Cascadias, nice liner but I need more pockets.
Love the Ultimate Direction Hydro shorts. Use them to run up Pikes Peak. I like the water bottles in the waste band, usually up Pikes Peak so my hands are free.
If you think the Patagonia Strider Pro is thight then never ever ever try the Arc’teryx Soleus short. I find the patagonia very accomodating and spacious, the arcteryx on the other hand are really thight:)
Them strider pros are great but the hem on the new ones isn’t as weighty as the previous versions and can ride up
Yes, take a look a Path Project shorts, along with their baseline short.
Thanks for video
I guess you need make another one, for not too.cheap and not too expensive. All shorts look very shinning on video. All my shorts are between 20-25dls. Almost all Reebok and always pick on sale or discount. Bike always the more expensive shorts, Neve bought one
God damnit! I orderd new shorts least week! I have been running in the same strider pro’s for four years. Haven’t seen them on your list for a while so I went for the gear of the year Rabbit shorts.
I hope I won’t regret:)
Thanks for great reviews!
Have loved the first Nike Shorts so much the last year for me the innen tights material is key to not getting chafing.
My favorites are the “pace shorts” from Saysky check them out
I love my Path Projects shorts and liners. Tons of storage and super comfortable.
It’s that time of year again! Here are my 5 favorite shorts for the Summer of 2019. While most of the shorts on this list are at the higher price points, they have held up incredibly well all year and I recommend them for your rotation. What are YOUR go-to shorts this year? What did I miss?
Great video! And I could not agree more on the Pearl Izumi shorts. Best I ever had. I bought 2 pair based on your last review and now only wish I stockpiled for the next 30 years:( We should start a petition 😉
Great reviews, as always! June would have been better for shorts, just sayin’, LOL. I’ve given up on inner-liners, just got tired of too tight or too loose and have gone to wearing running tight shorts or combo shorts full time now.
I’m shocked the Pro Striders made the list! I loved the previous release and found the new ones in Size M were really tight around the quads. You were 100% right on the liner too! I found the Brooks Sherpa 5″ shorts were pretty solid!
Still have my precious pearl izumi shorts saved for special ocasions. Best shorts ever
Personally I generally like to go for 2-in1 shorts (especially for Ultras no chaffing!) but I appreciate they may run a little hot in warmer climes. Not sure if these are readily available in the US but my favourites are: Ronhill Infinity Fuel Twin Short awesome storage, including a big zipper pocket, get loops, and inner pockets that can carry soft flasks making it a Hydration option for certain length runs. Oh, and comfy too! The ‘Stride Cargo Short’ offers similar features but aren’t 2-in1 if that’s your preference. Also a fan of 2XU 2-in1 shorts (not sure of model, but they’re shorter than most, overly long 2-in-1’s so feel more an a racer as far as 2-in-1’s go!) and also Inov8 AT/C Twin Shorts are quality and worth the purchase despite not being cheap.
On my “try” list are Under Armour Transport 2-in-1, and the La Sportiva Rapid, which are supposed to be great but are come at a significant cost!
Any 2-1 shorts for summer? I just don’t like the liners in typical running shorts…… they just don’t work for me.
Was totally waiting for a Spinal Tap moment in there…thanks for keeping it under wraps Ethan!
Seems like a great brand I’ve got to try! I’m always looking for cheaper alternatives to Nike/addidas.
I got a pair of the path projects graves da shorts and haven’t worn any of my other running shorts since, they are essentially linerless since they are sold separately and aren’t attached but I’m glad they took that approach since I prefer wearing the saxx kinetic as my liner for everything anyway. They have pretty great storage and feel great so I’d def recommend giving path projects a shot if you haven’t yet
I’m returning my Patagonia Strider Pros due to the problem that you highlighted. Not going to get a larger pair though I’m struggling to imagine a slightly larger pair being comfortable. The liner seems too heavy and to hold moisture.
Not on the list but I got a few pairs of the Path Projects shorts. Real nice.
I like those Janji ones may have to give them a shot. I have not enjoyed the latest strider pros as much love my older ones but the new ones not as much would probably be close to the list but maybe more like #5 love the FKT ones though was thinking of grabbing some more! My faves lately have been the NB ones I think I have a pair of Accelerates and Impacts that are just great the inner liner just works really well and is soft without those pinching elastic. One I would be interested in your take on is the Arc’Teryx Cormacs I think they would be improved with some more storage but super comfortable
I actually just bought a pair of the Pearl Izumi split shorts at the outlet store in Gilroy, CA! Maybe you can stop there on your way back up to the Seattle area. I was running in Big Sur over the weekend and stopped on my way to the airport. They are actually a great pair of shorts. I just went on an 8 miler today in them.
Patagonia Baggies! Best shorts ever. Use them for running, swimming, biking, lounging, any sport really. Most versatile shorts.
No top 5 list is complete without NFs Better Than Naked. Especially when one of your entrants is 90USD and still prone to chafing
Love this video, but damn man, I can’t wear shorts this small. Stopped doing that in gym class circa 1984.:)
Prices mentioned in video don’t even match what’s posted on website.
Thank goodness the Pearl Izumi Ultra Shorts still made an appearance. I still have three more pairs, new in the bag… Also had to turn the brightness down on my screen from those Rabbit shorts. My retinas are still burning.
just tried the SAXX Pilot’s… wow. Good bye chaffing!! The skivies are great too!
Would love something about women’s running gear! Can we get Coach Holly to review some running shorts please?
I’m keen on my Rhone Mako 7″ short. Originally bought them for the gym, but the fit and storage they provide got me to wearing them for just about everything. I even forgot I had my wallet in the back pocket when on a 13 mile training run and didn’t realize it until I took them off when I got home. They are pricey, but I usually wait and pick them up when they are on sale or clearance.
Sauciny endorphin split shorts and the brooks Sherpa 5” shorts
GingerRunner wasn’t lying about the Better Than Naked shorts. Best damn thing I’ve ever put on my body. Add the BTN singlet and you’re set for summer
Have been running through several pairs of strider pro and tnf better than naked, but now I am a big fan boy of Lululemon Surge shorts. They are simply amazing and a joy to run in.
Was just commenting a few days ago about how much I miss the PI Ultra short
Seems like Ginger Runner hasn’t tried Satisfy shorts which are the god tier of all shorts. They cost plenty, but not more than most shoes. Also, @Ginger Runner $60 is not a lot for a pair of shorts. Don’t be so spend-thrifty. Most runners have disposable income.
I’m keen to try Rabbit, but they don’t sell in Europe. Could you recommend a good store in Seattle? I’m passing through on route to Bigfoot 200 next week.
Thanks for the great content
Dang it’s been a whole year since your last one. Time goes quick
Serious question: Do you wear underwear with running shorts?
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks for this video!
You may as well just wrap your legs in duct tape if you are going run in those shorts
They all Look Comfy but if i am going to chose I would like Sulfit and Nike, Great Comparison Vlog Thanks Josh Cheers man
I actually like the 2018 Strider Pro much better than this year’s. Ended up getting the Salomon Sense instead than a second pair of Striders.
have a pair of the acer 3″ splits that are connected at the side which I am a huge fan of! I don’t like the ones where the sides are disconnected and flap around out in the wind! Do you know if all asics so-called splits are this same config? I sure hope so. I like the connected sides better than the flappy disconnecting floppy sides. I hope to get more asics ones as they are cheap and very high quality and I hope they keep this same config design. Do you know if all asic’s shorts are made the same? I am talking about the split ones. Look at the sides, how am I supposed to know if the channeling is splilt disconnected or if it is connected spilt?please help!thanks!
I bought the Russell shorts in a pinch at Walmart for camp this summer, when I returned from camp, I went and bought all the other colors……
Agree 100%, the cost of shorts due play a big role in overall, comfort and usefulness on the trails and race day…. “Great picks” I’m still a Patagonia S. Pro fan go 2 shorts…
I use the Nike 5 inch flex stride shorts. 2 pockets on the sides and one zipper on the back. Phone nice and tight on my side right pocket(never fell out), nutrition on the left. Keep keys, chapstick, whistle and extra gels in zipper pocket on back. Nike outlet had them for 13 bucks. Have one in every color. Lol can’t beat them. I do rip out the liners, can’t stand them.
I am owning a pair of Patagonia strider 5”, and I agreed w/u about sizing, mostly all my compression short, running short are size Medium, however, on this particular Patagonia (I love this pair) I have to size Large.
Quality review, as always! Pleeeeeaaaasssseeeee have Kim do a ladies review!
Im looking for strecthable shorts with belt loops, where can i find one?
Also a Patagonia Strider Pro fan I also had major problems with the liner, and cut it out in the end. Best decision ever 😉
Wrangler has a line of shorts called Comfort Flex, I got them for tech work at my local amusement park…they are fantastically stretchy and lightweight! I stopped using them because they felt too fragile for my line of work, but this video made me think they could become a great pair of hiking shorts. A slight drawback is the requirement of a belt instead of having drawstrings…but it’s a slight thing. Anyway! Look into them, they are an odd brand to consider for running or hiking, but they are CHEAP! maybe a hidden gem?
By far the most comfortable shorts I’ve worn are in the Tracksmith Session shorts. The liner is super soft, and I like the understated look. I know the brand has a bit of a “reputation”, but they’re excellent and nice looking shorts, and at $62 they’re not crazy.
I am also a fan of past Strider Pro’s, but also found these new ones to have too tight of a liner. Sizing up for me meant the liner felt good, but the short itself didn’t fit.
Interesting recommendations, I’ll have to look into the Janjis. Thanks!
Agree with Strider Pro until they ditched the boxer brief liner and went to the mesh brief. I miss the old version.
This video should just be a Patagonia Strider Pro update every year because they’re the best.
Great video,
I Only wear skinny jeans, all day every day Of my life
The more pockets the better. Also someone should make a tank top with a small zipper pocket that fits a music player.
How to buy this shorts….sir..I am an Indian…your videos are very helpful for running…plz reply
I started to see shorts from Nike and Adidas with zipper pockets at the sides in 2018! Woohoo.
Now I can run using short shorts and still carry my large phone!
Fu those belts things to carry phones and keys for me. Only for water now.
Finally.
Since there are quite a few comments regarding underwear or not, I’ll add this: I do not wear underwear of any kind under my running shorts. I’ve been running 21 years and have tons of shorts from various manufacturers and all of them have liners. I will say that 99% of my running shorts are 2.5” inseam or less. Freedom of movement is what it’s all about for me. However, I do see guys who wear compression shorts under their running shorts. But that may be a topic for another day.
better than naked 5″ and 3.5″ have been my go tos… the older lines of those models were more durable imho. they used glue instead of stitching along some of the liner and it frays over time
Thanks a lots sir your collection is wonderful
Be with you every time
The Boa 1 inch split shorts available at Running Warehouse and Amazon are pretty amazing and they cost around $30. They also come in a wider variety of colors, not the standard blacks and greys that you are limited to with most shorts. I’ve never been able to bring myself to spend $50 or $60 on a pair of running shorts. Boa also has a 3 inch inseam version for those guys who don’t like showing as much skin. LOL
I’m surprised you haven’t gone for more of the twin layer options especially the ones that have a single layer between the legs / crotch area. Or are they more Euro? Salomon / Montane / Inov8 all do shorts like that and they’re pretty great IMO
Great review. Can you review liner-less running shorts? I know there are not many. They can be difficult to find. I find liners very uncomfortable in shorts. I prefer to wear my own boxer briefs or running tights under liner-less shorts.
Check out Path Projects under shorts and shorts. Simply the best.
Quality video mate, loving the hair also just in time for Grealish signing for United ❤️
These are my favorite pants and amazon is always the best way to get them. Here is a link https://amzn.to/2WMkhOI
Under Armour has these new shorts called “speed pocket” specifically for storing your phone. They do an amazing job at it
I’m certain the award winning Aussie Grit Apparel Icon run shorts will appear on this list next year… When given the chance
When reviewing running clothing can you make a quick mention if there are areas that are reflective? This feature is nice to know for night runs.
Will we be seeing any women’s running clothes being reviewed?
Jamie thanks for always bringing us great gear reviews!. But 65$ for a part of running shorts!. OUCH!. that being said!. I still want some
I have always ran in Nike Running shorts but I recently switched to Under Armour Running shorts. They’re amazing! You should try them.
Any chance you’ve tried the Baleaf brand running shorts found on Amazon?
BALEAF Men’s 5 Inches Running Athletic Shorts Zipper Pocket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GQ8W92C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_b.tHEbA654XWP
Willy B = Williamsburg Bridge! It’s a NYC thing. Good looks on covering this brand!
Nike 7″ Distance shorts is the best for me, I’ve been using it as my go to shorts for the last 2 years, if you can see my pics on every marathon I have ran you would say I don’t own another pair of shorts. lmao
I don’t have any coupons. But if I did you would be the first to get one.
Just recently got the Montane fang shorts. 5” shorts with phone and stash pockets, spot on
Hey jami. For an all round running shoe (uptempo, long runs etc.) would you recommend the ASICS dynaflyte 2 or Saucony Kinvara 9. Or something else?
Jami please could you do a best speed interval or tempo training shoe video?
The Graves shorts by Path are my #1 summer shorts. Everything they make is very well thought out.
I completely agree with your number 1!!! I have 3 pairs of the Pearl Izumi and I’m a medium. It’s virtually impossible to find these shorts today in my size, even with checking Amazon or Ebay. Too bad Pearl Izumi stopped making running gear:(
Great video brodie…where did you purchase your black t-shirt though?
Great review as always, Ethan. I too have a pair of Salomon sense shorts for races and also have the same reservations but they are so comfy. The other trail shorts I would suggest a look are the 2in1 shorts from zone3 with secure phone pocket on the inner. Also, my go to trail shorts from Kalenji. They have a heap of secure pockets and very very cheap but also super comfy.
I dont know why some companies don’t put zip pocket in their running shorts. I some times have to put my car key in my pocket.
Darn, all of those shorts actually SUCK in the storage department. How unreasonable is it to reach around and wrestle with a vertical backpocket? Likely to accidentally touch the screen while trying to squeeze them in those super tight pockets. How about a pair of shorts that has a pocket that isn’t going to lead to “pocket texting” and allows for infrequent phone use on a run? I need to occasionally look at my pace and adjust media on my phone, and to be honest, none of these shorts will allow me to do that reasonably well.
why are you bringing an iPhone 7 on every run? seems a bit much
simple question my friend what is your top trail shoe pick for the average runner well kept paths nothing extreme regardless of price cheers
I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE liners in running shorts…. I run in training shorts. My thighs rub and those panties don’t help….. wish companies would make em without the liner. ♂️
Hey just wanted to say thank you for all of your insight!! I recently just got back into running and entered A 10 mile race. You have answered so many questions in such a short time for me. Literally hitting so many buttons. I trust you info and I feel like it’s all going to really help me. Thanks.
Needed a pair of shorts to hold my phone so I could record runs on strava, to my surprise couldn’t find a pair anywhere. Then I found tca and both their shorts and t shirts I wear for running now. Cheap and great quality
Here’s my short list:
1. Lululemon 4” surge short
2. Saucony Endorphin splits
3. New Balance 3” impact short
4. Rabbit Daisy Dukes 2
5. I don’t have a fifth.
Thank you Ethan. You guys rock
It would be awesome if kim would do a vesion of short showdown for lafies
Can’t the Russel Russel atheltics on the amazon uk store. Theres a market for someone like yourself or a channel like yours to open up to a UK market.
If I wasnt so lazy and had some form of camera presence I’d give it a go.
But I digress.
Very good video. After doing alot of high knees and kicks. Long shorts aint cutting it.
I found out recently that I like darker shorts too. I got the Nike light grey at outlet store and my sweat marks are all around the crotch.
I may have to make them my 5k shorts.
Baleaf shorts on Amazon. Only 17 bucks and it has the same type of pockets.
I love the brooks sherpa 5″! Now I have to check out those others!
Walmart brands. They get stained or ruined… get another one less than $10. It’s for a true trooper not for posers.
Brooks Sherpa shorts anyone? I’m still looking for a great 2 in 1 after the last brand i loved stopped making theirs.
For the Solomon shorts, is the back pocket deep enough to hold an iPhone?
GET REAL…??? SHORT SHORTS WEIGHT LESS, AND YOU CAN GET BETTER TIMES… B.O.A. U.S.A. FLAG IS THE BEST I HAVE SEEN AFTER 50 YEARS OF RUNNING IN THE U.S.A.
Chubbies ultimate training short! Plenty of color, storage space, and fit. Bit expensive but can last years of use.
Ginger Runner Nice review as always! I agree that pockets are great in running shorts.. You didn’t really mention liners and internal support/comfort too much in your review, and for me that is a deal maker or breaker when it comes to quality running shorts since I hate chafing and road rash. I just found Saxx Kinetic Run Shorts with a unique “Ball Park Pouch” (cradles your “bits”) most comfortable pair of running shorts I have every tried. A bit pricey but worth it for a slice of heaven on earth!
Rabbit FKT is probably the best from this list and many runners prefer the lower length of 2-3 inch and it has that. Patagonia only has 5-6 inch so its not really an option to me. I still do not understand why people prefer to run in such a long shorts ( should be called Medium not shorts:) )
Nice video boss perfect for these sunny days. I personally don’t like the Tommy ones just because it looks like you’ve literally cut the joggers in half and I can’t unsee them lol. p.s you should do another one on formal shorts like jean n chino shorts. boohooman have some amazing and cheap ones.
Nice guide! I just ordered a couple from your list from Running Warehouse to try.
can you fit a iPhone into the zippered pockets of the reebok one series epic shorts?
Not to be confused with the less popular but equally as important; Winter Shorts Showdown
The aeroswifts are my favorite shorts right now, found 1 single pair in my size at a marshals
I have the same issue with Nike 7″ Kiger. Can’t find any now, but they’re great shorts. Every run I have in the pairs I have is one less to when they’ll retire
Would Kim ever consider testing women’s clothes/gear?? Please!! Or if she isn’t comfortable doing it, maybe there’s someone else who could review it for you? It would be so great to have women’s clothing reviewed.
For my last few races the Dynafit Alpine Pro 2in1 has been my go-to pair. The drawstring is the only downside in my use (too short) but it was easy to replace.
I finally managed to get myself a pair of the Strider pros and they indeed are fantastic.
Where do you find $5 shorts? I have a hard time even coming close to $30
I know it’s been a little time.. but do you have a link to the Walmart shorts? Was hoping to pick some up.
One pair of shorts I have really enjoyed to wear, that have been used for a variety of events and conditions, such as long distance road racing, mud racing, cross country racing and anything inbetween including temperatures above 30°C (86°F), are ThermaTech Training Shorts (TT02M). This brand may be a bit obscure in the American market but are very popular here in New Zealand. So if you have the opportunity to get some I would highly recommend them.
PS they last a long time as well… Had mine for over three years and the only sign of their age is the fading of the colour to grey from black as a result of sun bleaching
alleson athletics track short, nike tiempo2s, badger track short, asics splilt track shorts/swintrunks, boa ellite black, xt-3200s
Never seen your ass so often:-D Another great video, thanx dude.
I’m currently running in a pair of shorts from the boys section of old navy I bought three years ago, so I definitely need a new pair! Thank you so much for your list. Subscribed!
RUN SHOT PANTS HIGH CUT VERY GOOD FOR RUN SPEED VERY FAST HIGH CUT SHOT PANTS VERY GOOD FOR SPORTS
Highly recommend the TNF Better than Naked Long Haul 7″ shorts. The entire wasteband are mini compartments for storage, plus additional zipper back pocket for an XL phone and spandex pockets on thighs. Storage is amazing for marathon training and should be very helpful for race day. Great fabric, too!
The Pearl Izumi shorts are the all time greatest shorts ever made. You can run any distance in with no need to worry about chaffing. The 2 hip pockets are perfectly placed and the back zip pocket is large enough to hold phone keys or anything you might need. I think what is genius about these shorts are they are not really shorts, they are briefs with shorts sewn into them. The hip pockets and back pack is part of the brief and the short material is sewn into the front and around of the base of the pockets. The materials are light and soft. I am happy to own a pair. Unfortunately they don’t make them anymore. Sad day.
Can you PLEASE have your wife make a women’s version of this video?!:)
OMG I agree % on running shorts with pockets. And having a zipper pocket is a MUST!
Do any of these shorts have pockets that could fit the iPhone 7 plus? I’ve been searching everywhere for some
Shorts have got more expensive over the last 2 years or so. You still have the cheap 20-30$ shorts from the big brands. But they also have the better shorts priced at about 70$. Patagonia makes the best shorts if you ask me. But they are expensive too. Salomon and Scott have shorts over 100$. That’s just crazy.
Strider Pro are hands down the best shorts out there with one major flaw in my opinion. The internal liner is a trunk design rather than a boxer short design. I agree with Ethan, the internal liner is super tight and chafes which has relegated the shorts to the drawer. Such a shame as the storage, build quality etc are great, even considering the higher price.
If you like storage check out the north face better than naked long haul. It’s a 2 in 1 short that you can fit almost as much in as you can fit in a pack minus the water bottles.
Patagonia Strider Pro are AMAZING. Looking forward to the new model before my old ones explode into pieces. So hard to find in Sweden, sadly…
Ethan, great video! Yes, on the Pearl Izumi Ultra shorts!!! I hope they heard you.
i can recommand “Palace Crink Runners” very comfortable, as light as air and enough legspace!!!
Myles Apparel momentum shorts are definitely my favorite. I prefer a liner-less short which these are and they have 2 rear slanting zippered pockets that work great even while running. I use them for road and trail.
Very informative video, but I would have liked additional comments on certain brands’ true-to-fit sizes. Some brands I can wear a size “S” whereas other brands I have to wear a size ‘M” due to the liner being too restrictive. But great video nonetheless.:-)
3:13 correct sock on the correct foot, so i just gotta find the right foot
Great video!!
I’m looking for some shorts 2-in-1 for marathon distance (good storage). Do you know any other good ones other than the nike?
Thanks for your time!!
Only gripe about this list is that you need to learn how to fold shorts better HAHAHA:)
The lululemon’s may be expensive, but they actually did a Strava distance challenge back in January and gave away a pair too everyone who ran 40k, and an additional shirt for those who ran 80k. (Snagged both for myself, and I agree, the shorts are great) So keep an eye out for stuff like that!
If you lived on the gulf coast, we live in the Panhandle of FL, even for trail runs, you’d appreciate the lightest, shortest short you could find, with a pocket for a car key avoiding a pouch around your waist, such as the Saucony. Long, heavy and no pockets are no goes here, not when like today it was 80 degrees with a 76 degree dew point. That said, excellent presentation.
I am really curious about the adizero primeknit shoes, I know they are pricey but if you could test them that would be amazing
I have the Patagonia but they have shrunk over time significantly to the point I no longer use them
I’m not sure why the Patagonia shorts were number 3 when you mostly talked about the cons.
Just go to Walmart Ross’s Marshall’s tj max and you’ll find some target lol
Awesome Video. It would be cool if you made a video of your favorite less expensive shorts (less than $40). I’m not a fan of spending $60 on running shorts.
Awesome video! Managed to track down TNF Better than Naked 5″ in London yesterday, took them for a quick 8 miler and really great recommendation, thanks!
Also picked up TNF Better than Naked Long Haul 7″ to give a try too, how did you find them?
Hey Ethan, really loving when you do these videos (I enjoyed the nutrition one a lot as well) as I don’t really care for that many shoe reviews anyway, keep ’em coming:)
Could you do one solely on compression shorts / other compression gear and your thoughts on their benefits? or perhaps something as simple as headwear/buffs or sunglasses? Would give good insight into what to look for when shopping for myself ^_^
Sounds like you should try doing cold water wash. Never had running shorts shrink, interesting to hear that problem.
recently found TCA myself and bought a load of stuff from them, the quality is surprisingly good for the price
really don’t see the point in spending money on brands like nike, adidas and under armour just to hit the gym and sweat
You would only know if they’re the best fitting shorts if you have tried them ALL. You’re a phony. Guys he’s a PHONY!
My recommendation: any pair of comfortable shorts plus a Naked running band.
Awesome review! I just picked up the Brooks Sherpa because of you and am loving them.
what is your height and weight so ican know that what is my size
I still have two pair of the Pearl Izumi ultra shorts. I will cry the most mournful cry when they finally wear out. SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE THESE!!!!!
Great vid m8. I will definitely be purchasing the grey sulfit jog shorts on the 7th of June. Are you releasing any other colours m8?
Good video. I have bought the “Better Than Naked” on Dean Karnazes’s recommendation. They are the best I’ve worn. I have only gone 20 miles in one run so far, but there was no abrasion to the man parts. Of course I am probably that old guy that everyone that sees me run and wonders why I’m not in more age appropriate attire showing less leg.
Are the Strider Pros going back to boxer briefs? I cant stand the new briefs and it seems like the pockets got smaller. =(
Love the Russell shorts. Have 2 pairs of two different styles . Have a pr of Flexion gear shorts year or two ago and still are
Finally! Here’s my list of my 10 current favorite pairs of shorts for Summer. Obviously, there might be more options out there (I also trimmed a lot from my list) so let me know YOUR favorites here! Don’t forget, links in the description to find out more on each pair as well as a discount coupon to enjoy:)
I’m not into ultra but in training I like the UnderArmour split short. I’m using those also to put over tights that are too reveling. These do not have much pockets, I can only store keys or two gels. I have also two pair of Salomon with compression inside and I love those as the outside does not twist as I run.
Im using the ON Hybrid shorts. It’s a 2in 1 with detachable Compression pant. Have used them up to 50k distances so far and no trouble at all. Compression pant also has 2 pockets. Handy for the phone.
Bought The North Face Better Than Naked shorts yesterday and ran a 8min PB at the Edinburgh Marathon today. Great pockets for storage as you mentioned. They are my new favourite shorts
Can really see your junk on the brooks and north face entries.
I found a brand I really like called second skin. They make more of a “training” style, but they are lightweight and built well. I prefer them over some of my Nike running shorts, but they don’t come with a liner.
Was hoping to see Stealth reviewed. Bare Bottoms seem the best here.
T8 Sherpa Shorts are in this moment the very best on the market.
Jamie, have you ever tried tracksmith gear? Its pretty pricey but very good quality. Their flagship singlet goes for $65,but with a promo,if u spend $100,u get a navy flagship singlet (the vancortandt) for free
Don’t like how stuff a phone bounces around in the pockets of shorts like this.
oh, THAT kind of storage. Thought you were going somewhere else with that at first
What about the new La sportiva tempo shorts. I must say I love them. I only run in my Pearl izumi on special days the greatest EVER
GO with Patagonia Strider Pro 7″ 2-N-1…..solves all the issues the 5″ has….
I just got my Austin II shorts. These are amazing… as long as they hold up. Thanks for the review!!!
I dont even run but i bought the nike 2 in 1 challenger shorts
Have you tried Lululemon’s surge shorts? I find them perfect for running and storage. They also have a very high quality inner lined. I own a couple myself and they do the job great!
Hylete did not make the cut this year in either premium or budget shorts?
Shorts have become so pricy. A couple of episodes back Patagonia shorts were one of the more expensive ones. Now they are one of the cheaper items on your list.
Great review as always, though. Love this series!
great revues though! I need some new tank top recommendations for distance running, can you make a video on some recommendations?thanks!
Those rabbit FKT shorts are so legit. Comfortable, durable, and made in California if that matters to you. Even thought they’re “trail” shorts I find the storage options invaluable on long training runs. I have some 2 inch Nike shorts that I prefer to race in, but I find myself grabbing the rabbits more and more for training runs. Some notes on fit: I had to size down in those, from a Medium to a Small, and I find the “accommodation” to be less that secure for the old Ones and Twos if you know what I mean. Hiking them up a little higher around the waist took care of most of that, but I was doing some warmup lunges in the park the other day and I’ll be damned if one of the old boys didn’t bust loose from the rabbit liner. Fortunately no one was around to witness this, but still. It’s a hazard!
Yesss! Strider Pros ftw! Love these shorts and buy a pair every year. I want to try the rabbit fkt but I think the liner might be too baggy.
I’ve been happy with the SAXX Kinetic Sport shorts because of the Ballpark liner. Great performance over the summer.
They’re not available outside Canada as far as I know, but the MEC BPM shorts are a thing of beauty. A bit overbuilt, but super comfy and a really good value.
What’s your waistline? So that we’ll have an idea what size to get. Thanks!
This video also answers the age old question: how’s it hangin’? Nabbed a pair of Izumis in eBay. Thanks.
Ronhill is the best shirt offered in the UK! For both bob graham round and Ramsey round I wore Ronhill shorts and loved them! Love from the UK
Would you use these same shorts for road races? Or only trail
Cant fault the new look ones for price and comfort. Then for sportier outings i find the gymshark sports shorts are the one, zip pockets, good fit, strechy etc.
FKT for the win! Also have the Patagonia strider pro’s. Taking the FKT’s down to La Sal this weekend. Those colors get me every time.
Massive pockets are the one for joggers and shorts, looks like you’ve nailed it with the sulfit ones mate
Is the drawstring on the outside of the waistband, or inside? Outside is a must for marathons and longer.
Probably going to give those shorts a try. I could really use the water resistant pockets as I’m pouring sweat in the Carolina summer. Should have known you’d sneak Mary Beth in there, too. Well played.
I run in the Salomon Trail Runner Short. Don’t let the name fool you though, I’ve used them for road races and even a casual swim, and they worked great. Lightweight, breathable, and super comfortable. There is one zippered pocket, and two mesh stash pockets on the back hip. Though I don’t normally use them to carry gear, they are there for me if the need arises. Another plus some might like, they come in a series of colors, from basic black or blue to red or bright yellow. There’s no need to look like you’re wearing the same shorts every day.
I actually love your brand. Looks great unfortunately I’m only a month late and everything is sold out
What about Superdry shorts? Fitting is mint, like the top man ones, only issue is the price -£40.
