After successfully practicing intermittent fasting for two weeks, this morning during my fasting window I ate a few kernels of popcorn (PlainLeft out from the evening before). Since I had started eating at that point I thought a piece of chocolate couldn’t hurt. Fast forward 6 hours to my eating window and I felt so sick, I could barely eat 1/3 of a chicken breast and a few pieces of broccoli before my stomach started cramping so bad and I got so nauseous I had to go lay down. Duh. Don’t eat chocolate to break your fasteven a little bit. Now I’m worried tomorrow I have to start those first 4 difficult days again. That’s what I’m on a mission to find out…

Hi Dorian, you also mentioned amino acid. Im wondering if we should take in amino acids together with electrolytes during fasting. Some products such as AminoVital claims that taking BCAA does not break fasting while some said they do. Im confused.
I asked becoz i tried juice fasting before and the lack of amino acids did cause me problems, most obvious of which is more hair turning silver than it would. Could you please help explain the situation with amino acids?

Simple solution After multiple extended fasts (up to 7 days), making a number of mistakes, and investigating this topic extensivelyI have found for me and a number of my friends, the easiest solution for everyday people is to consume home-made bone broth 2-3 times every 4-6 hours after an EF. Then, add in some lean protein. Works well for the majority of people. If you can’t make the broth at home, buy one from the refrigerated section of the supermarket, not the shelves.

As someone who fasts for health benefits, I would recommend not fasting to the point where you may seriously damage your health. Rather than a 5 day continuous fast with the associated issues of electrolyte depletion and subsequent possibility of refeed syndrome; why not enjoy 5 x 24 hour fasts spread over a couple of weeks.
Dorian I request you to make a series on Breath. Like Nose and Mouth breathing, athletes breathing, how we can practice diff breathing exercises to improve our lung capacity etc.

Both my Rheumatologist and Orthopedist both told me to use collagen powder and one said to avoid marine collagen, because unless they specify which type of fish all their collagen is made of, you run the risk of too much mercury in your system, which is detrimental to your health.

Should I still follow the safety guidelines after a 40-48 hour fast?
I took NativePath Collagen and it was great for my hair, it grew so much in one month that my hair colorist asked me if I was under a lot stress because I had so much grown out grays. lol It was because it grew so much. Anyway I had very good muscle tone and I was very happy, but it did change my digestive system, I got constipated and have never been constipated before. I also started to get acne like pimples on my right side of my cheek. After about a year I switched to Physicians Choice collagen peptides, well that helped so much with my digestive system, I was regular again, but only about two months into it, my right elbow joint started hurting and within a month I could no longer lift things, it hurt like it was dislocated. I stopped using it and within a week after my elbow no longer hurt. I no longer use Collagen supplements.

My uneducated opinion is that you should not take collagen supplements unless you have plenty of money and just want to do it for fun. The science isn’t there yet to support most claims as to collagens usefulness. Plus, most supplements in the US are awful. Every time any third party does testing of supplements they always find issues whether it’s not the right amount of active ingredient, non listed active ingredients, products containing lead, bacteria, or any other number of issues. Furthermore, every year more research is coming out questioning the benefits that supplements provide. Some even indicating potential harm supplements are causing.
Does my statement make you curious or does it make you defensive/argumentative? If it’s the latter then no amount of anyone explaining is going to change your mind since you mind is already made.
But his does this apply to 24-72h fasts, which are nowhere near the refeeding syndrome danger zone of 5 days? I’m a little confused. Sure, don’t overload carbs, but after say 48 hours, how likely are you to get RS?

I did a 5 day fast and then re-fed with anything and everything. Had no idea why 8 hours later I had INTENSE abdominal pain. I thought maybe I caused a GI blockage, but I had no idea about FODMAP foods. That makes total sense!
My 21 day fast ends around 8pm in a couple weeks which I plan to just eat a few pieces of watermelon, then the next day a simple portion of eggs and spinach. Worked for me last time on a 14 days fast and had zero complications/issues

I’m new to IF but have worked up to 40 hrs fast once a week. I take a vitamin tablet before and after as I haven’t had a recommendation for an electrolyte balance sold in Europe so if you have one I would be highly appreciative as it would allow me to maybe work up to 60hrs. Next I would like to ask more about what bone broth recipe you use. In one of the TDL videos on breaking fasts he recommended to use a bone broth too… this worked for me but recently I have had loose behaviors when breaking my fast. I was wondering after watching your video if it was because I used onions and garlic in it (which I know because I have a FODMAP family member is a no no). In which case what do you recommend?
I really appreciate any help and recommendations as I am all alone in this and have no one really else to ask. I don’t really have any support at home on this and I am very health conscious (the reason I’m doing this is I had a lot of health issues and well I’m trying to correct that). I don’t feel happy with extending my fast without being sure I’m doing it safely. Watching before I start a collagen powder to hopefully help my hair from falling pro as much but nervous because I don’t want an adverse reaction like acne since I’m prone to breakouts. Anyone have experience with hair growth and impact on acne?

The cost per serving is really good if you buy from supplementhunt their website sells protein powder about to expire but it last far beyond the best buy date and if you’re using a scoop daily you’ll be cutting the serving cost about in half.
Dr. Dray, how is it that you dive deep into the research of the benefits of collagen supplements, but you don’t recognize that Accutane and Finasteride can absolutely destroy the body (and the skin, as well)? Are you selective about the topics you research? I don’t understand why you can’t go into such depth for mechanistic research on isotretinoin you would find that it is absolutely devastating and can cause downregulation of collagen, elastin, hyalnuronic acid, telomerase, and induces extreme pro-aging effects.

I’ve been interested in taking collagen for hair and skin benefits (vs B7 biotin supplements that will just end up in my urine). Have you been able to find any good articles comparing plant-based collagen vs animal/peptide collagen? I haven’t been able to find a reliable, unbiased answer. Most articles are provided by vegan supplement companies, and they seem to just promote their own product.

If I were going to go for any it would be the fish. Pig DNA is far too close to human DNA. It’s almost like cannibalism. I am not overly fond of monkeys either.
Anyone who wonders what the answer is YES oral supplementation of collagen actually works for skin elasticity by inhibiting Trans Epidermal Water Loss based on all studies that dr. Dray had already provided in desc box. And adding vitamin C to collagen supplementation has no difference, by that means only consuming oral collagen supplements is enough for getting supple skin and decreasing crow’s feet earlier in your outer eyes.
But dr. Dray herself didn’t reccommend collagen supplementation for two reasons. The first one is personal matter that she being a vegan so animal consumption in any form will not be her cup of tea. And second reason is due to arbitrary regulation on dose of each products that is not standard. By that means, one product could contain different grams that is not in reccomendation of daily intake. Besides, there is no study yet that observes daily intake a person should consume to show maximal effects.

I have been having terrible hair and nail problems recently and ironically I saw this study posted probably on Instagram and FB about the best brands of these collagen peptides, so of course I ordered the number one brand (probably the goal of the advertisement). I haven’t quite finished the first canister and the 2nd one is already here. I haven’t noticed anything yet, but wondered if this whole thing is a scam that I have fallen for. I created my own gym at home with a combination of dvds, weights, mats, and all kinds of things from Walmart, Goodwill and Amazon. I’d wasted so much money on gym memberships because I never went. I used that money I was wasting to create my own personal workout room in my home. Now I can exercise whenever I want without leaving my home.
Isn’t shakeology a total nutrition powder and not just protein much like Spirutein or the Nature’s bounty products? Those are meal replacement shakes not pure protein powders.
Whatever whey you choose to use do not bother with all these elaborate shake recipes with fruit or peanut butter. Just put it in a cup of hot coffee or tea. It dissolves completely and whey is like a creamer. The flavor is a plus and then you add your cream or sugar as desired and pour it over ice if desired. It is a way to get your protein without a big heavy complicated shake.
I use MetRx because a huge container was for sale at a discount store for $20 when it normally costs $37 retail. MetRx at least was not one of the ones she dumped on.

I’ve used the Phase 8 by Muscletech and I think it’s a decent product. Not the best but definitely not the worse. I only use it as my last meal of the day before bedtime or on my super low calorie fasting days. On my super low calorie(800 Calories) fasting days it allows me 26 grams of fast, medium and slow release proteins per 26 gr scoop, with water that’s 150 calories and with 1 cup of chocolate almond milk it 250 calories, throw in a tablespoon of ground flaxseed +70 Calories. That allows me to eat a grilled chicken salad with 4 ounces of grilled chicken and low fat dressing (250 Calories), and maybe some oatmeal with scrambled egg whites as my other meal.

I P90X classic mode, then up a notch P90X doubles, then another notch P90X & P90X3 classic mode,then another notch P90X2 & P90X3 classic all back to back. Sundays & Saturdays saved for stretch/yoga/pilates/Dynamix with weights. Monday, Wednesday Friday’s are over 2hrs almost 3hrs with 30 min of abs. Tues & Thursday are almost 2hrs.
Now I’m P90X3 vest with weights 30min+30min abs. About to start mass section.
Now I’m 125lbs 16-18 inch waist, 12% body fat & 44yrs old.

Yes, “protein” is an essential muscle building food, however plant based proteins are not only better for you and the environment, but they don’t come as a by-product of a dairy cow that will have been forcibly raped multiple times in her short life, had her calfs taken from her after each birth, likely to have spent her life stuck in a shed and have illnesses such as mastitus. whichever way you look at it, dairy is cruel
