Hey Billy thanks for sharing! Any recommendations for shirts? The links you provided work as affiliate links or would it be the same to buy it directly through the page?
Chase looks like the guy from the Polar Express after drinking the Hot Chocolate
It would be nice to get links to all of the products that you review or at least a list of the names in the description.
Yes! Got into the Spring Energy products late last year and love them. Ditto the Naked run band. Cool info, thanks Billy.
Billy i love your vids! Pay attention however, you’re running with the Suunto!!
Great discussion point is do we size up on jackets for Ultra Runs? As you might be able to wear it over your pack, allows an easier way to put on and take off as the weather changes. Some thoughts to consider…..To be honest I haven’t’ found the right way to go about it as being new to the Ultra Trail distance
What shirt do you usually wear during your runs? The white shirt you wore during “THE WHY” video
I ordered the Apex after this review, and doing a lot of research of course, and I love the watch! Now my wife and 4 other friends have purchased it too and all love it!!
Protip: If you’re going to Google Naked Running Band have your safe-search on first.
Is there ever a chance of your phone jumping out on the run since there is no zipper?
Thanks for the tips! We share a lot of faves esp the naked band. you can put a soft flask in the back. i have even run slowly with 2 flasks in it.
Really thought you were going to burn your hand on that candle
I also run with a NAKED band and love it! On sizing they say “measure your waist and order that size ignore you trouser waist size” for example, I am about. 30 inch waist “trouser waist” but measure about a 34 inch. I wear a 34 inch NAKED band (after a couple of go’s…..) and it fits great. Save yourself some trouble and listen to their advice!
Very solid list of recommendations, Billy. I haven’t tried the Path Project gear yet. Have heard nothing but great things about it though.
Spring nutrition, as a whole, is amazing. But yes, Canaberry is my favorite flavor in their lineup
I’ve been tossing around the idea of trying Spring Energy; apparently all I needed was hearing Billy Yang recommend it.
Just ordered and excited to try it!
Damn Coros giving the big brands a run for their money. For half the money. Great vid as always!
Yes! I love Spring Energy gels. It did take me some time to transition after using other gels for years. My favorites are Canaberry and Speednut. I ran my first 50k using them and didn’t have any issues.
I looked for the $100 Houdini. Only saw them in the $169 range.
Mr. Yang I agree with you on COROS Apex watch the battery last a very long time I was surprised how long it did last and if you ever drain the batteries or down to 10% it only takes a couple of hours to fully charge. I think the face is to dim. But other then that I wear it all the time. Thanks for your input. I’m going to try the belt I’ve been looking for something like that.
Do you think the Houdini is very breathable for running even under warm weather? How do you take care of it? Do you hand wash/machine wash every time you wear it?
THANKS FOR WATCHING! Download our FREE checklist to help you get a great night’s rest so you can hit those early runs: https://www.chaskis.us/pages/chaskis-checklists
Every runners channel should have a video like this. And I agree about the shoes. The shoes should be a video by itself if anything.
Hola Billy question for you …. what kind of socks do you use for run and what socks recommend for run..? and gracias for sharing these tips!
Bundaberg, that’s where is was born. More famous for there rum
Extra thoughts:
1. gel: CLIF gels get that trick pretty well that you won’t end up with two items after opening it. Try the razz flavor.
2. When you rinse the inliner, a neat trick: spray a whiff of Lysol onto the buttock and the jock area. Better safe than sorry.
The path shorts combo looks legit! Thinking I might give these a go. I think the problem I have had with other shorts is that I have bigger thighs but a slimmer waist. So the shorts end up either being too baggy in the waist or too tight in thighs. Thanks for the recommend!
I’m glad you mentioned the UD ultra jacket. Unfortunately, that was the v2. I have the original and it does all of what the v2 does plus packs down smaller too. Def part of my mandatory gear in any long run.
I have another brand of that style belt and it’s my favorite, my phone is also gigantic.
Glad I watched this, I’m a girl but I was on the fence about the Houdini. Just ordered it. Thanks! And gotta love the Canaberry, gels, Sage is a good guy, too
Excellent tips!
I use FlipBelt and it’s more forgiving on the size because it’s pretty elastic. So double cheaper if I remember correctly
The naked belt runs small. Measure the waist where u want it to hang. And order one size up. Should fit.
Path project looks worth a try! Salomons layered shorts system isnt that durable. But works perfectly.
Great recommendations.
Billy Any recommendations for a hydration pack that can also work as a day pack for out hiking?
Have you ever tried ruhn base compression shorts? You can fit all of the essentials in their two pockets. I’ve ditched my naked running brand since I found these.
All in all a great review session….. question for you, Billy…. what about more hydration?? I sweat a lot, so need to carry more water than the average runner…. I use a Nathan 2 liter vest now, and am looking at a Salamon or UD to upgrade, but I think I need moderate to high water carrying capacity…. what do you do for longer/hotter runs?
Does anyone have a working Coros code? looking for a new watch. Also, does anyone know where I can get Spring Energy in Canada and not have to pay insane amounts for shipping?
thanks for the gear list! how do you think the naked running band compares to the vaporkrar waistpak? re: your sonoma nipple chafing, i found nipstrips to be a great solution.
As a native Queenslander can confirm that Bundaberg ginger beer is both delicious and useful for settling a queasy stomach
I’m hoping that you can answer the question we’re all dying to know… what are your thoughts on yang gang?
I love my Houdini and Canaberry. Have you tried the rain jacket from CampUSA? It packs down to the size between the Houdini and your UD. I used it on my JMT through hike and it was storm proof.
Cool and very informative video with chill jazz playing in the background! Loved it!!
If you start to do gear reviews, I’m probably going to purchase every item you recommend.
Running with the Coros CEO, na no influence there at all:D
+1 for the Naked Running band though. Love that freaking thing!
Great info Billy! I’ve been searching for the perfect shorts/baseliners. Looking forward to trying out PATH.
Thanks Billy. Lots of great info there! Quick Q… What do you carry your water/tailwind in?
As soon as I saw the heading, I was thinking, “Naked Running Band.” I laughed when I saw it shown in that first panning shot. Just picked one up about a month ago after seeing a YT video of a gal racing an ultra with one. I’d been looking for something other than my Nathan 020 (which I really like), and wasn’t sure if I wanted to go with a UD style ultra pack and bottles up front, or some sort of hip/holster rig. The NRB is fantastic, and like you, I’m wearing it on almost all runs. The Camelbak 500ml/17oz soft flask fits great in the back, and has a nice twist lock, so it doesn’t leak at all. I recently tried the UD 20oz handheld “bottle” (oval shaped) and like that too. The NRB is flat-out, a must have.
Thanks for the head’s up on the Houdini and the UD rain jacket. I wonder if you could use some waterproof spray on the Houdini and give it a little more functionality in the rain?
I appreciate you making such a detailed vid! Thanks!
https://youtu.be/-A8f9Lufikc?t=636 happens to me also with my running vest’s pockets after 4-5 hours of trail…
Nice vid Billy. I’m more and more intrigued with the Coros all the time. The Houdini is also on my must list.
Hi Billy what sun glasses you are wearing. It look really cool. I dont think i can get it in Malaysia I
You wear your phone in the front of the belt? I’d worry about falling, tripping, and breaking it! Does the belt stretch out to the point where you can’t wear it anymore? Love Patagonia jackets. They rock! Lastly, you’ve got huge hands. I suppose many are envious of this.
If you can’t imagine getting tired of a specific taste of a gel, you haven’t run far enough
You’ll eventually get tired of gel, you’ll get tired of any sugar, you’ll get tired of water, you’ll get tired of anything that isn’t a real warm cooked chewy meal with fat, salt and variety
I do not recommend goretex brand, very low quality zippers that will not cover your warranty and I say this from my own experience. after spending more than 300 euros on a jacket with GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY ™ technology for a cycling expedition through Africa. From the beginning they began to get clogged, cleaned and greased almost daily, but they ended up blocking without being able to open nicerrar, acquiring a greenish color. Do not be fooled by their tremendous marketing campaigns, if the brand itself does not guarantee its zippers, there is the answer for its quality…..
I like the laundry tips for the liners and shorts and will look into the Naked Belt. Thanks Billy
Billy, thank you for the info! Although I use different items, the reason is very simple my optimization strategy is different. Once again, thank you, especially for info about Coros Apex. My Garmin ForeRunner 235, which I like, didn’t lasted even R2R2R (taking into account how slow I am). Will think about this watch as a replacement when time will come.
always have separated base layer, and short…, heck, if I like the design of the short, I will cut out the base layer, if it comes with it
Good videos on your channel I’m happy a came across it well done.
I’d love to know about the coros watch vs other gps watches, I’ll be looking for a new one soon. The Garmin I use now is over 10 years old…I’m excited for an upgrade
Thank you. So much great info in this video. I’m definitely going to take a closer look at all these products.
Love your videos! I’m going to be looking for one of those Patagonia Jackets, thanks!
Spring gels seem to be a bit more than GU Gel. Are they that much better? GU gel seems to get along with my stomach and I noticed they offer bulk bags. Seems to be the better option price wise. Has anyone compared the 2?
Great review on your running gear. What recording gear and editing software do you utilize to produce such great videos? Cheers.
I have used the UD Ultra V2 jacket as an outside third layer when the wind-chill has been below 0. Beautiful product. I just wish it had a see through window on the sleeve so you can see your watch like the Raidlight jacket.
Great Billy. I just order band from naked
Your blue jacket with red pocket?? What brand??
Just getting into ultraswell haven’t run one yet, but done 25Ks and 2 marathons (1 on trail). Thanks for the inspiration Billy!
I have two Houdinis and a Brook’s LSD. Both r great!
Great video Billy! Really helpful! Are the Graves shorts baggy / flexible enough that they don’t restrict you on the uphills? I’ve always run in the shorter running shorts (albeit not the 1980s skimpy ones any more!). They have the decent cut on the side legs to allow for freedom of movement. Thanks.
keep it simple, gear can be over-complicated. Really appreciate this approach! Thank you!
Currently have a Fenix 5. I’ve seen a ton of info on Coros and was curious about it. Thanks Billy for sharing your experience! Definitely going to look into one.
You’re making me want to get into ultra running! Love all you videos, getting inspired! Doing my first marathon next Saturday!
Great stuff Billy, totally agree about the Naked belt and about getting the size right, its awesome but get the right size. I used it at Bandera100k and mine was 1 size to small. it was awesome but ill size up. I also agree about getting tired and missing the pocket on the belt. Spring energy rocks! Its really changed my nutrition game. Thanks for all your great videos!
The Coros Apex is awesome! Recently switched from Garmin Fenix 5 and I love the light weight and ease of use. Accuracy has been just as good if not better. I also love how responsive the company is to feedback.
We are on the same page, Billy. Really appreciate the natural ingredients of Spring Energy (if you get an opportunity, try Speednut), as well as each product’s specificity & ease on the GI system. Recently purchased a Patagonia Houdini (came in use for the very early morning recent start, at Grand Canyon R2R2R)… as you mentioned, packs down to almost nothing, lightweight, and extremely effective outer layer. I use a Compressport Free Belt (which is much like a Naked Belt)… extra storage, is always welcome… I’ll definitely be using it, along with my Orange Mud HydraQuiver VP2, during my 100 Mile debut, this June (San Diego 100 Mile Endurance Run). I have been running with various models of Suunto (currently Spartan Ultra), for years… your GPS watch interests me (less bulky + better battery life + lower cost). I hear ya, regarding have the compression short separate from the trail short… I race in a Salomon Trail Short (two pieces attached… potential for chafing… DZ Nuts or Squirrel Butter? for sure #prophylactic). Keep up the great work, training, and racing. Cheers!
Spring energy gels are the bomb. It’s hard to have anything else now that I’m using those. The Houdini has saved my butt on more than than a few occasions in the back country
Very informative and helpful. I can’t wait to order some PATH products
I have hoka cliftons and rincons as trainers. And Next Percent for races and workouts
I wanted to like the Apex, but it just wasn’t reliable. When their app was taken off Google Play that was a warning for me that I couldn’t trust it. Went back to Garmin. The Path shorts look intriguing though. May check em out.
Hi Chase, I’ve been a huge fan of the channel since last year. There is something called affiliate marketing which allows you to get a percentage of a sale when you advertise it on your channel. You should sign up for amazon’s affiliate program and when you do videos like these link the products from amazon in the description so if someone buys them your link you get part of the profits.
Awesome video Billy, I love BUNDABERG ginger beer, tastes so good:))))
hey BIlly in those Path shorts, do you wear a small or medium in the liner/outer short?
Hi Billy… Could you share with us the exactly model of Ultimate Direction Jacket?
Hi, do you use Houdini in races where they require waterproof jacket? What do you use if not Houdini since it is water repellent?
I like that tape. My vest of choice is the Tracer360 https://www.amazon.com/Tracer360-Visibility-Vest-Medium-Large/dp/B00GI993YG/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=running+light+vest&qid=1593708930&sr=8-5
