Bike riding is a thing many people love doing. It is of importance to keep a record of the miles covered, and the speed achieved to be able to plan and set goals for the next cycle. That is why it is important to.
Do you need a dedicated GPS or a bike computer? If you want the most reliable speed and cadence records, you would definitely want a bike computer. GPS units can be inconsistent, expensive and battery-intensive.
The best bike computer will record every second of your adventures, no matter where they take you. Some riders prefer a simple bike computer for ease of use.Best road bike under £500: the best cheap road bike for beginners in 2020 The best road bikes to punish the climbs and explore the open road on a budget By Leon Poultney • 2020-05-14T15:35:08Z.

So glad I didn’t jump at the Karoo. I Looked good on face value but yeah absolute show stopper with no alerts.
The Sigma looked good when it came out but want easy to get your hands on (hate shopping online) however now I have a Radar strong pass.
Garmins are reliable, not much to discuss there that hasn’t been discussed other than turn off the nutrition crap.
Wahoo just works but you lose some analytic capabilities. I run WKO5 to get around that.
Pioneer no idea but seems to be basically a Luzern(sic).
Garmin 130 that’s just adorable.
Garmin 1030 that daddy. Dat Weight though. Saw a dude doing loops of the road nats KOM course with one and the battery pack. Good for weight training.
Bryton is your go to for ultra endurance stuff. Sick battery life off memory.
Hope Hunger Games over here has his hair sorted and a proper fitting shirt by now.
Interesting review thanks…. I currently have a Garmin 1000 very poor battery life and overall just a sh!t unit just can’t trust it on long rides and using it for navigation, previously had a 800, failed twice warranty, the 1000 has failed once, warranty.
Won’t be buying Garmin again and really don’t see much that I’d buy as yet. Something I’ve noticed and would have been interesting in your test, elevation inconsistencies between units (and iphone, Android), as well as inconsistencies with segment times on Strava. Then you have the most dismal mapping on the Garmin units, and the hopeless navigation even on the 1000. And don’t get me started on Heart Rate and the drop outs even with different units and new batteries. Just not good enough!
So basically a 5-minute Garmin endorsement.
And sorry, I can’t take anything serious from a guy with terribly unkept hair and an old stretched out t-shirt. SMH
Just bought a stealth 10. Only need speed and distance, {and I don’t really need speed]
Which cycling computer will let you customize the race a segment page. So when your on a segment you can customize whats on the screen. REALLY WANT TO KNOW PLEASE HELP
Check out the hammerhead Karoo. Just got one and the screen is amazing. Here is a video on how to import rides from Strava to Karoo https://youtu.be/Rq_hcVLNYLw
Hi Cycling Weekly. I’m doing high rpm interval sessions & I’m regularly maxing out the 180rpm cadence limit of my Garmin 810. Is there another computer I can upload data to Training Peaks or Strava that has a much higher maximum achievable cadence?
Many thanks
Phil
I’m sorry I can’t stop staring at his hair. It flops around when he ends sentences.
Or just get the BikeComputer from RoProducts on the play store. Even has cycling specific gps routing. Compatible for all of your sensors. Been using it for years.
I move my browser window up so his hair is out of the frame. Ahh… much more enjoyable.
is the 530 like the 520+? 520plus is a pos. plug it in to recharge and it turns on? why? why on earth would this be a thing? then you have to fiddle about to turn off or leave it to overheat and suck the total life out of the battery (and increase the charge time if hurry is a thing you’re looking for). no option to not have this happen btw.
don’t worry, if you remembered to turn it off when you plugged it in, sorry after you plugged it in, when you unplug it…it turns on again (though, admittedly, it will eventually auto off after lots of irritating beeping assuming you made that an option). more fkn about.
Sunding SD-563A £5.79 on eBay, with backlight and temp display. Happy days
thats a nice blouse..looks like the dog got a hold of it and stretch it out though:/
Had trouble sleeping last night, played this for 3 minutes and was dropped right off. Unfortunately I awoke after I had a nightmare about that hair. Ya win some ya loose some.
This guy needs a new shirt.. should we all pitch in? and maybe get him a cup of coffee so he can be a little more upbeat. I could not sit through it.. I’ll try again next spring when I need the info more. I do like the channel and the other speakers though. This one just need to step up the pace a little and dress more proffessionally like the others do.
Was a dog hanging on your t-shirt collar to stretch it like that?
Thanks Shane! My 820’s battery is only good for 2 and a bit hours these days so I’m looking for a cheap replacement to cover those longer rides. Bryton 420 is ‘looking’ like a good option.
Very bad video. No hands on demonstrations. This did nothing for me at all.
6:50 yeah, but most modern smartphones have hotspot functionality with it, so you can connect the Hammerhead using wifi. I’ve grown to use this very often as I have a Bryton 530, and I sync my rides using hotspot because it’s SO MUCH faster than syncing with bluetooth.
Great video nonetheless. Thanks GP.
I’ve got a 520 and it has incident detection too and it works because I was hit by car before
Presenter’s hair was more dynamic than his delivery.
Video cherry picked the available options. Hardly a “guide”.
It looks like Hammerhead heard you. https://youtu.be/lb5m81BN0ew
Thanks for the nice comparison! Really good, because I’m looking for a GPS Cycling Computer with Navigation. My personal focus is the navigation. That’s why I was considering the Garmin Edge 1030 and Sigma Rox unit… but you called it HUGH! So I did a quick research on google and found out, that the unit dimensions are almost the same like the Garmin Edge 1030! My question…. is it really that hugh? Can I trust the numbers I found? This is the Garmin 1030: 58 x 114 x 19. And this is the Sigma: 59 x 115 x 18.
Thanks for your help!
Why would you include the Garmin 520, when it was replaced 6 months ago by the 520+? Most of the features you talk about in the 820 are in the 520+. Sorry, but you dropped the ball in this video…you missed lots of cycling computer options, and you included obsolete computers that are off the market.
Who stretched out your shirt and messed up your hair?? I’ll kick his ass for you!!
An intern looking for a permanent spot? Looks more like an audition video
Video idea could you test the thinkrider x7 3 its a really cheap smart trainer found on aliexpress and i was wondering if its worth the price or is it a scam i cant seem to find munch information any where so it should attract viewers
Bit limited…. wahoo range? Sigma range? Plus many more.
Think Garmin may have sponsored this link
About the Hammerhead: side load (for example) Droid Watch for the BT connectivity with the phone for data/messages. And use a BT headset (bone conduction) for the alerts.
I can’t get over how ridiculously scruffy the guy looks in this video? His hair is ludicrous and his shirt doesn’t even fit? I’m sorry but this is really distracting me from the video.
Which K-edge mount is that? Looks super sleek with the Garmin130.
If your already bringing a phone why would I want to have one of these? Aren’t there apps that will do the same thing?
Dude that hair lol. I can’t stop laughing lol! I did know you could be worse than a man bund but you’ve done it…
I still havent found a real reason for not just using my phone. Battery life is decent enough for regular 1-3h rides, and for long(multi day) rides i carry a powerbank either way. The phone can do anything those headunits do, and most of the stuff (touch screen, route planing, ease of use, conectivity, etc) even much better. and nowadays, you can buy one that will comfortably work in the rain, too. and if you want/have to bring the phone anyways on top of the cycling computer, its even the lightest option, too. plus i dont have to stuff it anywhere.
I didn’t understand why there was the need for 2 baphomet hand signals at the beginning, so assuming this is a requirement I did not watch the rest of the video.
He’s not very good, but have you seen his weekly vlogs? He’s terrible in those. He will probably get better though.
Cycling weekly is a professional outfit, but this is terrible. Firstly the others are right, has he just got out of bed?, and the delivery, it’s terrible too. Just tweak these two things and it will be a hit, dress and look smart, and have some perzaz in your presentation. I hope this is taken in a constructive way, as you are probs the best bloke for the job but just need some tweaking like bikes sometimes do time to time.
Disappointed not to see any Lezyne Units in there.. Would expect at least a MegaXL or the new Super Ehanced Pro…
I’m a big fan of this channel but felt this video was poor. After 30 seconds I was bored unfortunately. I’m not a hater on YouTube and rarely pass negative comments/feedback, however a bit of enthusiasm wouldn’t go a miss in this video and perhaps ones in the future.
Shopping for a unit and was thinking about the Garmin 130. Was happy you enjoyed the unit.
Awesome video, thank you! I have recently purchased the Garmin Edge 830 which I really like.
As side from the hair and poor delivery. Here is a shout out for my SIGAM ROX 11.0. It has been a great cycling computer, downloadable info, programmable route selection, work-outs, and links to Strava as well! It is small, but still has a feature rich 6 data page screen which I can read. It is about half the price of the Garmin and Wahoo units, and still gives power, cadence, heart rate, speed,……. all the metrics one could want.
Love my Karoo, incredible unit that is so user friendly and stable. Navigation is stellar. Can’t beat the screen. Could not recommend enough. FYI, there is a Karoo 2 coming out soon, that will probably correct the downsides Shane mentioned. Worth the wait if you can, as the Karoo will be hard to beat if it corrects a number of those things.
How far we’ve come from the days of wrapping a computer sensor wire around your front brake cable and measuring your tire’s circumference…
Another flat video. Videos are not cycling weekly’s strong point.
This video is not correct in many of the features on the Garmin units. You don’t need to go up to the 8xx series to get collision detection.
I went bike touring this summer and brought my Wahoo Roam, and a Wahoo Elemnt. I learned the hard way that it was a BAD IDEA. There is hardly any point in having a backup unit if it’s from the same brand as the main unit. During the tour, Wahoo sent out updates that wiped out the maps, and updates that made them crash a lot. None of which is fun when you’re in a foreign country and the head unit is your map, and of course, when they sent out the bad updates to the Roam, they sent the same update to the Elemnt, which left me somewhere in the German countryside with two useless units. I’m pretty sure this wouldn’t have happened if I had brought units from different brands…
Anyway, thanks for the test, it sounds like I’ll take a close look at the successor to the 1030, whenever that shows up!
Wow, awesome comprehensive review of so many contemporary units! Nice!
My Garmin edge 130 can not save any activity over 2 hrs long. Am I missing something on the settings? Please help
it’s not a guide but advert of all the bike computers, I was thinking that I will see done opinions, pros and cons, etc…. disappointed
Hi can you test the Mio cycle 605 head unit as no one has a proper test, thanks Alex
Great comparison of all those units. Would have loved to see a summary matrix of features compared:) Cheers
I got to be honest we all love cycling videos this is just what I need to get it going the blood I love it. I always watch these before I go out and get my body moving. I love when I always watch one of these, and then put up my heavy playlist I love like Delta Parole and then I just go haaaaard!!!! Tactic hasnt let me down yet.
I have made a small video of my own on how to import routes from Strava to the Karoo just using the URL which is a great option I think https://youtu.be/Rq_hcVLNYLw
hi there, great video!! btw, im considering between edge 1030 and 830,can u tell me more bout these two cycling computer?what r d main difference between them?and which one u will recommand?which modal have a faster processor? thanks in advance:)
Touchscreen only units are a show stopper for anyone in cold climates. Full gloves require buttons. I also feel full colour backlit screens are overkill, that’s what makes some of these units heavy fitting in a battery that can run a huge screen for 8 hours+
I’m so jealous about the weather you could enjoy on your Festive500:D
Due to injury (running,I am not a legend )I have started cycling, spent £500 Sterling last year on bike and never used, but have done now and absolutely love it,it so cool, have got undulating country roads next to me /can just about do 12 mile hour for two hours, there are no issues ie no sore back or neck,I think I will start x training,I am trying to run marathon under 4 hours when 60 yrs,8 yrs training to go any tips especially relating to endurance woukd be aporeciated
I just dont see why anyone would deviate from the Garmin product line, it seems competitive across the board.
I would love to be on a ride and see Shane or dc pull up on a bike with 8 head units
Bike Computers Buyer’s Guide??? This was just a Garmin ad. SAD.
Regarding Karoo, I believe the navigation/ routing is average at most. It does ok when you plan ahead on Dashboard (which is also average), but rerouting is just appalling, it is I believe mostly due to poor map updates. Also “point and ride” navigation on the device was the tipping point form me. No ride profile means you can’t pick the type of surface to ride on, which means that it is all a lottery.
Yes, I know they release updates frequently, but for 400 Euro I want a complete device, not a beta version with a bunch of promises…
You know phones can be mounted and have far better GPS, displays and interfaces right?
what’s wrong with using a smartphone and a fitness watch for heartbeat monitoring.
Thank you for the great reviews. In 2018, I upgraded my Edge 25 for a Edge 130. Rode all last year (2019) and just loved the little unit. I upgraded, because I needed a head unit for a power meter. The bread crumb navigation is no issue for me. It was a toss up, whether I’d get the Edge 520 or 130, but I found the Edge 130 on sale at Christmas (2018), 40% off, and grabbed it. I really like the way I can customize the screens, too. KB
In Strava: Shane Miller GPLama rode with Shane Miller GPLama, Shane Miller GPLama, Shane Miller GPLama, Shane Miller GPLama, Shane Miller GPLama, Shane Miller GPLama and Shane Miller GPLama.
Give the guy a chance man, he’s new. I’d like to see your lot bumbling on about something. b b b b i love garmins cause they is good cause I’m Experts. Pmsl
I bought the Hammerhead Karoo for it’s iPhone fast screen and processor. I love the device and the after sales support you get from the Hammerhead team. I don’t miss the beeps myself but I know there’s a feature to connect your tethered phone over WiFi for turn by turn audio prompts. I would agree that this is second best to an integrated speaker for those who need it. It remains a stunning device in my book.
For American viewers…took me a second or two to realize what Shane meant, but “Show Stopper” is equivalent to our expression, “Deal Breaker.” Ironically, the expression “show stopper” in America has a positive connotation. As in something/someone did something so amazingly great that it “stopped the show” for prolonged applause.
A much as my failing eyesight likes the look of the 1030 I just don’t think I could go back to Garmin after having zero problems with my Bolt. Like the look of the Roam just not sure the screen is sufficiently any bigger than the Bolt. If Wahoo made something similar to the 1030 in size they could take my money.
I currently have a garmin edge 1000,, would you recommend the 830 garmin or Bryton unit? Happy New Year from Colombia
Karoo, being android would be samsung fast,… not iphone fast.
Previously had Edge 820 and now the Karoo. It does everything better then the Garmin and the navigation is superior to any other unit. And that why I use such a device. Loving it.
Got a Hammerhead Karoo over Christmas and absolutely love it. Features are still a little limited and lacking behind Garmins and Wahoos, but operationally wise it’s miles and miles ahead. Love it and navigation is super cool and easy to use!
Hammerhead big screen is a good thing not bad…….does not need a speaker. Who needs the awful sqreech like a Garmin I had a Garmin and it’s something I don’t miss. Plus you can buy a very cheap clip on Bluetooth speaker if it’s that important
the other con with the hammerhead karoo is that it doesn’t support structured training plans.
I use “Urban Biker” app. Very customizable on what you see on the screen. I use a cheap prepay (no service) android. Put airplane mode on, but have gps on.
Hi Shane, which Go Pro do you use to record your riding video? Thanks, nice videos, keep up the good work! 😉
Karoo full review soon? Asking for a friend. Curious your overall thoughts. I burned through two units before I sold the third on Ebay, Water ingress on their screens, it as real issue. TEARS! Converted to Wahoo and I haven’t looked back. Thanks for the content as always.
Why is it people want to know where the are going? Just look around while on your bicycle. Old school still is the best. You don’t need any of it. If you’re tired stop, rested and go again.
Lezyne computers are better then Bryton computers imo in terms of features. The only thing missing is the radar support but excellent value for money regardless.
Great Vid as always Shane.
I have edge 830 and cannot get text messages for the life of me!! Tried everything and still no good. So tempted to go back to a wahoo as they just work (I have Vectors and Varia hence the Garmin head unit). Have you had the same issues with text alerts on the 830? Any tips?
I have a wahoo element roam. I like it a lot. But recently I bought a cicliq fly12 camera and it interfere with wahoo gps precision. Pretty annoying.
had to watch this a second time, was too distracted the first time
I’m a wahoo user now but one thing that I miss from using a Garmin unit is that it registers actual laps rather than counting laps in pre set time. Do you know if there is a way to se Wahoo to count laps when you arrive to your original start point of your ride?
If it’s a little chilly out you can cut those Garmin 130 battery life hours in half. Seriously. You can’t ride a full century in the cold (with HR and cadence) and have a hope in heck of the Garmin 130 battery holding out for the entire ride (without battery backup)
Which cycling computer will let you customize the race a segment page. So when your on a segment you can customize whats on the screen. REALLY WANT TO KNOW PLEASE HELP
You should look into the Mio cycle computers as well. They are an overlooked bunch. https://www.mio.com/en_gb/products/navigation/cycling-navigation#!/paneltype=&order=name&no_cache=true&p=1
Is the GPS performance/accuracy of the Roam better than the Bolt? I’ve the Bolt and it really sucks in that aspect.
Jeez, this guy needs some training and I’m not suggesting 4x10mins at 105% of FTP
Not much mentioned about battery life. This is a area where computers such as the Garmin 1030 excel. Yes, they did have to make the screen less brilliant to achieve the long battery life but I don’t find that a issue.
Interesting currently have an Edge 520 and it’s never let me down; however I’ve wondered about a budget unit for a back up. The 130 looks tempting, as does the Wahoo Elemnt Mini unit.
As for the Casio watches they’re still making them……..
Great video, perfect for those of us shopping for a new head unit!
I was hoping you used all 8 on the same ride to address any discrepancies in the data recording.
It is probably the best “fast comparison of major bike units” thanks for this video.
Conclusion?
1-Garmin/Wahoo
2..
3..
10..
nothing then at all. All other are simply useless from money/usability point of view waste of money.
No lezyne gps in there very surprising as for £180 the mega xl does all what the garmin 520 does.
nope…Hammerhead Karoo cant be beat…and it gets better and better…you wont have to get a new device every year and a half either….just sayin
Thanks for a great video, very informative,my thoughts are with you for what is happening to your beautiful country
One thing i would like to know is the orientation of the screen polarizer. My Wahoo Bolt got a 45 degree screen polarizer and so it darkens with polarized sunglasses. How are the others?
Sigma apps are the worst. Absolute dealbreaker. They should just stick to making lights, they work without software.
buying the 130 tomorrow since my 3 years old 520’s battery only lasting around 7 hours with only GPS and power sensor connected
Lame. It’s a Garmin ad, not a review of what’s really out there. The fact that IGSport, Garmin’s main competitor isn’t mentioned is proof. Cycling Weekly has lost all credibility for me by not labeling this as a paid promo.
Being about the same age as your dad (or so I would guess), I would say the biggest thing the head units need is a “Geezer Mode”. This is where the fonts are big enough to be read with out reading glasses. It is bade enough getting slower and weaker, but when you have to get readers in your sunglasses so you can read the head units just hurts.
Wahoo eco system of Garmin? I ride as a hobby, but like numbers and stats. I have wahoo cadance and speed sensors.
Just sold my edge 1030 and bought the Hammerhead karoo and what a difference. Very sharp, very colourful, and very responsive screen, and with all the regular updates it’s the best out there. Having no speaker is not an issue as I always turn the bleeps off anyway, but if you like them just wear a Bluetooth earpiece and problem solve. I found the Garmin screen was terrible with lagging and washed out colours also found pairing the lights was over complicated with the light network and really just too many cycling metrics that apart from only the extreme technically minded, number crunching cyclists would ever use. The Karoo is adding new features all the time and today they have released an update adding Live Tracking.
I just bought a 2020 Trek SL6… I don’t even have it yet (Still in the mail). I really want to get the best computer. I waited and waited all the way through the video to see maybe what your favorite pick was but no luck . I’ve never had a bicycle with computer lol I just ride. What would your top pick be if you had no computer?
Have you tested Ride With GPS app on a phone?
Used it on my iPhone for years and it’s great. Secured with a Quad Lock.
Over 11 hours on my iPhone 11. Phone has a far better screen than any bike specific unit. Connects to wahoo HRM and Stages power meter. It’s waterproof. Get turn by turn directions. Etc
Rides sync with Strava (new feature from Dec).
And I always carry my phone so I’m saving weight from not carry a bike specific unit too.
No idea if it supports Di2 though.
Hi Shane, would the Garmin 530 be a good upgrade to my old 800, My 800 battery lasts about 3 hrs if I’m lucky, very slow to re charge etc, I don’t currently have a power meter so only need HR, cadence, Maps all the other basic stuff etc, your thoughts would be very much appreciated, many thanks
i miss seeing the country vic roads.. now im stuck in texas:/
Shane, how many Km’s does that farm field road go? Looks like a decent stretch of road and nice pavement! Happy New Year! Thanks for the video wahoo all the way!
How’s the young man’s hair anyone’s business? It’s not.
Now, as for the topic in question, I beg to differ: there isn’t a single bike computer to satisfy the basic expectations of most of us, especially long-distance riders & bike tourists. Garmins are overpriced and mediocre at best. The Wahoo devices are very handsome, but are a total rubbish for navigation. The Mio Cyclo -series, the Teasi are probably as good as or better than mid-range to top-tier Garmins and cost somewhat less, too (as they all should!), but even these (as well as everything else out there, in varying degree!) have a poor battery life and a rather simplistic interface and cheap low resolution screens. Idem, the Explova X5 (its interface is somewhat better, but battery life is just as unimpressive). The Lezyne Mega C is more affordable and has a colour screen (also low resolution), but at least vastly superior battery life (still so-so, but much, much better than most competition). However, it’s not as good for navigation as, say, the Mio Cyclo series. Also, the physical design leaves much to be desired. The iGPSport IGS618 looks slightly better, but is fairly useless for navigation; at least, at ca. €70 at GearBest, it smokes, on paper, the competition.
The device I like most is the HammerHead Karoo: it has a beautiful (albeit a little bulky and, like every single one of these devices large-bezelled) body, large buttons, a more agreeable (though far from properly hi-resolution) screen than most of the competitors. It also has a truly beautiful navigation / mapping interface second to none in that respect. Unfortunately, its battery life is even shorter than most competitors; it also isn’t cheap: a shame, because if not for its intolerably poor battery performance (and its price), it would be the bike computer of choice for any serious cycle tourist, commuter and a weekend rider.
I don’t know why Wahoo just doesn’t make their units Garming mount compatible. The Garmin mount is like the GoPro mount. The stand…
This guy shouldn’t be allowed near a camera lens ever again.
Hello. I’m doing high rpm interval sessions & I’m regularly maxing out the 180rpm cadence limit of my Garmin 810. Is the Garmin 1030 capable of higher maximum achievable cadence, or was there another smart computer that had higher maximum cadence?
Many thanks
Phil
The rattle snake sound happens to be present on my garmin 1000 as well. It’s from the lap button. Very annoying.
I’m new to,cycling but there appear to be so many experts (clever clogs!) who take the piss out of people trying to help newbies. This was a good review so leave the lad alone.
Running both the Wahoo Elemnt Roam and the Garmin Edge 830.
Love some of the training metrics on the Garmin however it tries to do too much and is a chore to set up but does seem to allow for better post ride analysis. Some reason don’t hate the Connect ststem. The Wahoo Elemnt Roam solid easy to set up just seems to work. The rerouting is the best I’ve seen this far too.i just wish for the day wahoo are able to upload to Garmin Connect. Hate file management.
New bike with the SRAM Force AXS eTap DZero is gonna be running the wahoo for sure.
Old bike with the Fav Assiomas can roll with the Garmin for those cycling dynamics which wahoo support is not ideal.
All I know when the new bike arrives the kickr, the Assiomas and the quarq dzero are going through a llama lab test.
