What the HECK is TVP & WHY It’s the BEST Plant Based Meat!

Textured vegetable protein first was created as a byproduct of soybean oil, which is commonly used for cooking and in many processed foods. To make soybean oil, manufacturers separate the oil from heated soybeans using a high-pressure press, chemicals such as hexane, or a combination of both. While it may sound more like a science experiment than a pantry staple, textured vegetable protein (TVP) can help you create hearty meals with no meat in sight. Also sometimes labeled as “textured soy protein,” this legume-based food is vegan-friendly and helps bulk up pastas, soups, sandwiches, and more.Textured or texturized vegetable protein (TVP), also known as textured soy protein (TSP), soy meat, or soya chunks is a defatted soy flour product, a by-product of extracting soybean oil.
It is often used as a meat analogue or meat extender. It is quick to cook, with a protein content comparable to certain meats. How TVP is Made. TVP is a factory-made food that originates from a soy protein isolate.
The process involves separating the protein from the whole soybean. During this process, a slurry of soybeans is mixed with an alkaline solution that removes the fiber, which is separated from the protein in a large aluminum tank through an acid wash.Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) is a concentrated protein product that is generally made from soybeans.
It’s a versatile substance that can be used as a meat substitute when seasoning, spices, or herbs are added. It’s especially valuable for people who don’t eat meat, since plant-based foods generally contain less protein than foods from animals.TVP is made from soy protein isolates.
The process includes an alkaline solution to remove fiber and an acid wash. Yeah, like I said it’s really not possible (or a good idea) to try that at home. As far as nutrition goes, TVP is not the most nutritious food but I don’t feel like it’s the worst.
Textured vegetable proteins can be defined as ‘food products made from edible protein sources and characterised by having structural integrity and identifiable texture such that each unit will withstand hydration in cooking and other procedures used in preparing the food for consumption’.TVP is a high-fiber, high-protein meat substitute made from soy flour. It has no fat or cholesterol. TVP is available in a variety of flavored and unflavored varieties, as well as different sizes—from large chunks to small flakes.
Because it is cheap and widely available, it is popular among people cooking on a budget. To use textured vegetable protein, cooks need to rehydrate it, typically by soaking it in warm or boiling water. Just like tofu, textured vegetable protein has a very mild flavor, and it absorbs flavors readily, making it an excellent addition to a wide variety of dishes.Textured Vegetable Protein – an unsung hero of your food production Ben Furney Flour Mill is Australia’s leading manufacturer and marketer of TVP (textured vegetable protein) offering advanced soy products to best satisfy customer needs.
Textured Vegetable Protein is a highly nutritious soy product. It is incredibly wealthy in complete protein and contains no fat, so it is an excellent alternative to meat. It is also a good source of dietary fiber, iron, magnesium and phosphorus.
Textured vegetable protein is made out of defatted soybean flour, which is a bi-product of the process of making soybean oil. The defatted soybean flour is mixed with water and formed into a dough, and then pushed through an “extruder” where it is.Yum! Anyway some benefits of TVP it is really freaking cheap. I’ve scoured Amazon and found some of the basics: – Dixie Diners’ Club – Chicken (Not!)Strips, 1 lb bag (these are similar to the ones I used for this recipe) – Harmony House Foods Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) Chickenish Chunks (12 oz, Quart Size Jar). (cutlet style).
TVP, or Textured Vegetable Protein, is a registered trademark for a shelf-stable, protein-rich soy product made by Archer Daniels Midland. It is used as a meat substitute or a long-lived emergency provision. TVP is reconstituted by adding specific amounts of water, which are.
Textured vegetable protein is produced by extrusion of defatted soy flour and contains approximately 51% crude protein, 1% fat, and 31% carbohydrates (Hill et al., 2001). Textured vegetable protein from soybeans is commonly included in canned pet foods because it retains the appearance of meat during the canning process.

I’ve added a bunch of TVP’s to my Amazon store!! https://www.amazon.com/shop/saucestache?listId=3HLX2AISJVUN4 <<< This is an affiliate link! So if you buy something I make a bit of money!
I love getting those at the Oriental markets…. They have them in slices, chunks and grounds and super affordable.
You know it’s healthier, cheaper, and easier to get locally, real meat.
I’ve been eating these the whole time and never realised you could make fake meat with them.
1:40 Oh no! The worms. My mom uses them in soups and I call it worm soup. I hate them. I realize if they were a different shape they’d be fine, but who thought of making TVP worms??
I’m a three month vegetarian inspiring to move to completely plant-based. Thank you for this video! It was personable and informative. Very helpful.
Could you make a tvp from a pinto beans instead of a soy bean?
What part of ohio. Never heard anyone say Steak Hoagie outside of Cincinnati
Am alwys hungry when i go to youre channel i love all youre recipe nice sharing video healthy food
Most people don’t realize McCormick Bac’n Bits contain no meat. Totally TSP.
Where can you actually buy TPP or any soy-free textured protein for that matter? I’m having a hard time finding resources and there doesn’t appear to be any in your amazon store.
Love the grinder shot! So pretty how it swirled! I have never heard of TVP before! Very interesting! Thank you for this great share!
I love soy TVP but I’ve never tried anything else. I’m not a burger fan but to be honest, those bread buns used for burgers look and taste very unhealthy and poor. Can you please make a video on a healthier and tastier version of the bread buns? Thanks! ❤️
Im not new to this but I am to the Chia seed pudding game, do you think it will taste good if I mixed the two?
@ 3:55 That’s the pro and con of TVP that food manufacturers put it in EVERYTHING for a cheap source of added fiber and protein and shows how much people could live on plant protein if it weren’t for cultural bull crap. However if a person happens to have an allergy to soy products this makes life a LIVING H E L L L L L L L!!! having to every damn label to keep from getting sick or breaking out.
Why aren’t plant based meatballs called plantballs? Or veggieballs?
Wow when I saw the chucks I remembered you are Canadian yaaahhss!!!!
My son is in 6th grade and with the virus we had to go to his middle school to pick up food for the week. He told me that I could not have the bean and beef burrito because it was not vegetarian. To his surprise the meat was TVP not ground beef.
I’ m 70 and a bit late joining these new ideas… but… I’v recently been diagnosed celiac and plus allergic to soy, nuts, dairy… loved the video until I learned the ‘veggie’ in TVP is soy… looked for TPP… but can’t find any available to general public, or it just might be that I can’t find it… the two venders i did find are only into mass marketing to institutions not individuals… and I’m not wanting nasty regular pea protein… and cant ‘texturize’ peas at home… can anyone help?
So is TVP the same Morning Star Crumbles and Gardein chicken I’ve been eating for years? I’ve used the crumbles in chili for years. People don’t know it’s not ground beef!
If so, it’s good to know if I can get the same for cheaper and not have to refrigerate it.
cheap hotdogs are like 20% meat, the rest is soy, I keep telling my partner that if he’s going to go for the cheap hotdogs he may as well just have the vegan ones, they’re not especially expensive and the cheap dogs smell exactly like soy dogs when they are cooking
made in CHINA?! POISON! Even though TVP is likely a safe food product, some argue it is unhealthy as it is not a natural product and is made through excessive processing. The number of chemicals used, high pressure and heat involved in the process of creation makes TVP a thermoplastic substance.
Thanks for the video and yes I know what TVP is oh my god,I was trying to buy some the other day and Harris teeter,And asking one of the employees they didn’t know what it was,So anyway I told him it was made by bobs red mill because that’s the one they carry normally,So they use their phone and it was on ille 4,Normally I order that my chunks Online at Amazon,Due to the coronavirus,And shipping is delayed by 14 days or more.Well sorry for writing a book but I love your videos,Im a new subscriber and you’re amazing,Thank you.
I went vegan because of TVP. Its Versatility and ease-of-use it’s what convinced me to go vegan.
Is there really pea protein TVP? That would solve the soy sensitivity my husband has, I’ll look it up and see if I can find any, cool, fingers crossed!!!!
I’ve been eating TVP or what we Indians call soya chunks since I was a kid in the 90s. Chunks are more common here than the flakes. I love it. Delicious and protein packed.
I really enjoy your videos. I `m just wondering, are you a chef/food scientist or is this all a more advanced hobby for you? Anyway, thanks for all your great content. Greetings from Berlin
Hi, I’m super new to this, but I’m allergic to mushrooms, any other flavour suggestions I could try in the broth please?
Any suggestions for sloppy joes with tvp? Since the sauce is fairly wet, would we still want to soak the tvp in broth before?
Where can I find all those different bags of TVP? Asian stores online????? OK I just saw the above link to your Amazon store. THANKS!
I actually really like most TVP, I know a lot of people that claim to hate the texture but they unknowingly eat it without complaint. I’m not vegan or vegetarian but I eat very little meat. If I crave it I’ll have it or a substitute but I generally eat a lot of nuts, grains, dried fruits, vegetarian Indian food, beans, rice, etc.. I love veggie burgers, and powerhouse veggie sandwiches. OMG so good. I recently got my 87 yo mom addicted to veggie powerhouse sandwiches. Before she had one she was bummed there was no lunch meat on it but once she ate one she thought it was perfect. She was cute calling me up after I left her town to ask me for a shopping list of what to buy to make them for herself. Veggie burgers have been a favorite of mine since the 1970s, good ones are generally so much better and more tasty than hamburgers are. I’ve always loved the chicken soy patties. I use those or soy chicken nuggets to make quick and easy faux chicken parmesan, it’s the bomb with lentil linguine and so pretty too! Love your channel. Thank you for your recipes and ideas!
I have tvp and I wasn’t sure what to do maybe I’ll try the nuggets
i wish to know is it healthy what kind of nutritious value is it and what short cuts the companies use in to make tit etc gmo after all we are what we eat
You’ve literally just explained my elementary, junior high and high schools “mystery meat” HAHA! I always wondered what type of meat we were eating…
I used to buy dehydrated soy in the Mexican markets (I’m Mexican) and would always use it to make chili and let it rehydrates with just the spices alone, then add beans and give it a quick mix. I used to do this when only Tofutti had commercially available ricotta cheese which I would season with turmeric and paprika for a more cheddar flavor
dunno if you also know the TVP Soy Big Steaks, those are very welcome in the BBQ season 😉 https://www.veganer-shop.ch/steaks-schnitzel/150-soja-big-steak-5stuck-ca-180g.html
TVP was the staple for us English vegetarians (I’m not now) in the 80s. It was also in pot noodles, any kind of ready meal. It took them a while to cover its cardboard like flavour. There were a lot of varieties of texture, including this stuff you soaked overnight and had a fibrous meat texture, but tasted like liver
I knew the school meat was different! For one, it was not greasy or fatty. Also it had a firmer texture. I liked the school burgers! I also liked their baked burritos. I think they used soy/beef and refried beans. then they baked it. Also my brother who is allergic to soy always got sick from eating at school. My mom just thought the school wasn’t clean enough and we were getting sick from this. But I told her the meat was different. LOL
I cannot go completely vegan because I lack enzymes to break down beans properly. Even peanut butter can give me indigestion if I have no other proteins or fats like butter. *sigh But a friend from the middle east said you only need a small amount of meat to be able to digest beans. So I was looking for a recipe to add TVP to ground beef. LIke 3 to 1. I will try the chicken nuggets with chicken bone broth to see if I can eat them. It would be great if I could!
Where can I buy those TVP bags you have in this video? Can you post the link?
All these vegans and vegetarians, craving for a meat substitute anyone see the irony here?
Is this stuff actually good? I want to try but I’m scared lol
I’m guessing you are not vegan by the fish sauce on your amazon page? so thank you for helping out vegans even tho you are not
The common flakes we find around here are much darker, it looks a lot like ground beef rather than chicken.
Some low-ass quality protein GO VEGAN AND DIE LMFAOOO bunch of brianwashed idiots
who else is here looking for TheWolfPit in the comment section:)
How to make TVP texture vegetable protein, all recipe really very good and health, very good for everyones, thankz for the great recipe my dear
Terran vs Protoss. As a terran player, I really hate these matchups.
WHY? If people don’t want to eat meat,., Why would they attempt to make a product that resembles meat in taste and texture,., Just eat meat… Also soy being a plant based estrogen mimicker, WHY would a man want to put that in his body, unless he wants to be a girl….
I’ve only ever seen the small pieces, never the flakes, nor larger sizes. I love it, tho. So versatile. I don’t add fats to the marinade or broth, but I do oil fry or roast after they soak it all up. The Telema consome is amazing in TVP.
TVP is typically made from one of the most pesticide/herbicide-laden products in agriculture: soybeans. No thanks!
TVP also causes mild to major gastric upset in many people. I am one of those people who cannot consume TVP because it causes major gastric upset. I can consume fresh soybeans, but not manufactured products made from soybeans. I occasionally consume organic steamed soybeans.
I get my soy chunks from a West Indian market and make mock chicken salad out of it.
TVP has been the main ingredients for making fake meat in Taiwan since more than 25 years ago, at the time I was just turning to a vegetarian. At the time I also tasted the best “beef” for vegan beef noodle soup I’ve ever had which was also made by TVP. Sadly it’s gone after few years when the restaurant closed (the restaurant didn’t operate for money purpose). I was surprised to see that TVP became so popular in west countries now, and looking forward how different cooking ways by using the same ingredients would change the food world.
A friend once made a lasagne with TVP. I was so confused because I knew she was a vegetarian but it tasted just like meat in her recipe. I had had TVP before but nothing as authentic.
Would these work as a hiking/backpacking ingredient? Would it mix well with dehydrated beans, potatoes or couscous, with some seasonings?
When did chicken become the gold standard for vegan flavors?
Thanks, I think I just commented on one of your videos if you had heard of soya chunks, that’s used in india! Coincidence that this video popped up 4 days later. I like it. Thanks
I bought some yesterday to play with my first batch was horrible I over seasoned and it still had a processed taste. The second batch was better, I used less seasoning and I added a cap full of apple cider vinegar in the water to remove the processed taste.
Is there any nutritional value to this? We know this is how they make dog food and all nutritional value is “extruded” out. I am a vegan but I want to keep eating healthy.
nice video, thank you,

Yum! Thanks for sharing How To make Textured Vegetable Protein from scratch:D
Recently started to use TVP. I eat meat but not alot. I make a chili with TVP and I cannot tell it’s not meat. And the chili is even better the next day!

Great work, Buhler thanks for pioneering the way with plant-based meats!
wow..this recipe of yours is so cool..and this is very healthy because it is made from veggie
This looks good my friend stay connected have a great weekend my friend
Never tried this before, I might one of thee days ❤❤❤❤ love the vid
I also have another request for a video. Can you make vegan fish as well? I was once in a vegan restaurant in Malaysia and the fish they served me was unbelievably similar to a real slice of a big fish (e. g. sword fish) and tasted a lot like the sea I recognized some seaweed used to make the skin but still have no clue about how they made the actual fish meat!
Not off topic, has anyone seen the story done on the company that made the impossible burger, when they were testing the meat they fed it to rats and it killed them, yes they died, their organs shut down and they died, and for some reason the people doing the testing said OK good to go here! Ready for people! just a thought, if your eating fake meat products because you think it’s healthier, it’s not, it’s actually really bad for you, if your eating this garbage because you don’t want to eat an animal then I can get by your argument, just understand what your eating and don’t assume it’s better for you because it’s plant based.
@saucestache es vegano ahora o solo son pruebas de alimentos veganos?
Good food for health. Have a nice day, my friend. I have fail of YT review, now i will modify my channel and re apply again.
Are we meant to be impressed by that appalling video? No explanation, just steam and “inspirational” music and then it went all over the floor! Gross! And why did we have to watch a boring worm of soy protein come out for at least a full minute before the chunky bits started getting produced? Was that bit wasted? Or is it turned into soy spaghetti? Is that always what happens when they get the machine going?
Floor? Touching bare hands? No hygenic protective equipment and clothes? No shoes plastic covers? Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes. Plus, super random filming and music…
Ok I’m learning you know I’m still on this weight loss journey lol so this is good that paste texture almost look like cornbread mix lol looks delicious
Super recipe and awesome idea, will copy this. thank you for sharing

HELP!!! NEW VEGETARIAN HERE…..HOW DO YOU MAKE THE TVP STICK TO MAKE A BURGER OR PATTY? MINE IS KINDA SOGGY AND VERY SAD LOOKING
Wow, I’ve always wanted to know what exactly TVP was used for. I never thought you could use it for picadillo:D
best use for tvp is roll it out cut in squares and use as kitchen sponge
There is no plant-based meat. Meat comes from dead, butchered animals, you know, the kind you all think you are saving…
Subscribingsuch a helpful video, great sense of humor, and just an Amazing personality
Even tho I’m not a vegan Why do I find your vegan videos look so damn good
thank you so much for making this video… I have watched videos on chicken nuggets, but have no idea there were different versions of TVP. I went and bought a bag of Bobs Red Mill or something like that. Now I have to search more on this stuff.. I am excited to see what you come up with.. hurry up and post that video… oh, and I am now in contract with the house and will be heading west to find our forever home… so excited.
Is it soy based? Sorry if I missed it if you already mentioned it
I’ve only done a few things with TVP so I’m looking forward to what you post using it!!
I would recommend that if you are using the smaller forms of TVP like the flakes that you either sift them lightly before rehydration or you rinse them like you would rice (although you don’t need to change the water three times.)
This is because you will get an amount of soy flour in your bag, especially with larger bags from manufacturing and the pieces rubbing against one another in shipping, and this will cause a soy aftertaste to your dishes.
If you rinse your TVP before rehydrating, remember to reduce the amount of water in your broth somewhat to account for the water the TVP will absorb from rinsing.
I like to toast it before re-hydrating, like what you do with the rice in paella. Otherwise the “ground meat” comes out kind of pale.
Great source of protein. I have not tried this, but looks like a good protein source with lots of fiber.
I can’t seem to find the answer to the question of how exactly one ends up with dehydrated soy protein from the soybean. Is it first turned into flour, then mixed with water into a dough and treated to pressure and heat? Is that it? Is there anything else added? Does the chemical composition change at any point? Could the soy TVP have adverse health effects that the soybean doesn’t?
How long is the storage life of tvp if just kept on bag for trekking purposes?
I will surely try this! Thanks for sharing this vid. Thanks for the help the other day! ❤️
Sis l need this for my meat thanks for sharing God richly bless you
This is really a healthy food..thank you for sharing this recipe. New friend and subscriber here..keep sharing.
