Easy to fit on and great traction. These were very easy to fit to my boots (10.5D), and fast to get set up. I really appreciate crampons that are a breeze to put on and take off. It’s not often I have an easy place to put them on when I get to ice, snow, etc.

Bad news on the Timp 1.5’s. When you get some kms/miles up, about 800k’s maybe, they collapse under the center of the ball of your foot once that center lug is worn down. This gives you VERY sore feet, start you limping. Up until then they were great, best ever, then all of a sudden about as useful as high heels. The Timp 2 is about 1/4″ narrower and getting back to arrow toe. Too narrow for me. I wish they’d put the Timp 1.5 top on the lone peak 3.5 bottom. THAT would work.
Thankyou So much it’s like I don’t even have to go to REI there is way more stuff out there and probably less expensive too.
I’ve been waiting for this episode. Good choices. Thanks.
Awesome vid. From experience just be warned the altras don’t handle for long. Went through my pair in less than 6 months of trail joggin 3xs a week. Read the reviews, I got the same outside tear (side blow out) as many get. I prefer adidas terrex, but the are slippery on wet stone which makes them bad for bping. Any hoot, love the upload, just be wary of the altras unless you want to purchase a new pair couple times a year.

Z Packs must just SHOWER this guy in money…and if they dont they should…making me want buy some of their shit…Even though I think its shit…It seems like for every OZ you save by switching to their stuff, is one less year that you get to use the item before it breaks…and it costs the same as other more durable gear…
Eco wax is solid idea. Never really considered petroleum wax getting into the water ways
What’s been some of your Favorite Backpacking Gear of 2019???
Let Me Know Down Below
Ha quite funny seeing you on the TGO apart from the stove and cup did you change your pack list.
I’ve done it four times using different routes as well as a bunch of stuff in the US. Also how did you come up with a route?
You probably know that Henry Shire’s of tarp tent did it in 2010.
Stay safe all of my American trail buddies.
Prescott: “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes”
Me seeing Darwin from 500 yards away:……….BANG!!!
Easton doesn’t make those stakes anymore. Guard them with your life!:)
I bought a Snow Peak 900 just for the extra utility of the little pan. It’s going to be interesting to try it out when I have my vacation.
Does the BeeFree require the bottle that comes with it? Or can I use it like the sawyer with a Lifewater bottle instead?
You should team up with Gabriel traveler and me, well, with naked traveler….if she wasn t so stupid most of the time!!
Hey! New fan just subscribed. I’m planning on going on a 6 month backpacking trip called Backcountry with Americore. This will be my first time backpacking, so I want to bring the right gear, I really appreciate your list. My question, does the minimalist tent set up you described, is it one you would choose for rainy weather or for such a long trip as mine? Would you have a recommendation that could help me remain light weight and comfortable?
You always comment about how tall you are and the length of your jackets. Is it only in the torso that your long? How londlg are your arms? That’s my issue so that’s why I was asking
I did a section hike of the Condor Trail in May and it rained on me almost every day. I had an Equinox 8×10 silnylon tarp, a really affordable and simple thing. I was amazed it kept me perfectly dry. I could throw my pack down, lay the tarp over it. set it up, then unpack everything and set up my bed under the tarp. In the morning if the tarp was wet from rain or dew, which was most of the time, I just saved the tarp for last and shoved it in the back pocket of my pack to dry out later, or not. It kinda never really mattered if it was wet or dry. My favorite thing though was I brought a stove and made hot coffee in the morning. I usually do cold-soaking. The hot coffee was the best with all that rain.
Darwin, I’m looking for a new rain jacket. Do you ever find that your Zpacks Vertice leaks at the seams? That was my problem with the jacket I used on the A. T.
Like that Greeny aqua blue Oakley jacket, will that get early release in NZ Australia season?
Shock surprise the rain jacket was useful when visiting Scotland! 😉 (Just joshing as a Scot we don’t like to think of it so much as rain as God’s tears of joy!) Very useful list I’m tall so the jacket caught my eye (coincidentally). Thank you hope you enjoyed Scotland.
you should try a TheraCane for improved recovery.. Yes its a bit large. But after trying one a few times. The ball seems so inadequate! The leverage you gain from the length is what really made it for me.
Gotta cool it with those hands. Way overdoing it. Feels really forced
I’m glad you finally see what I’ve been saying about the Katadyn BeFree…by far my favorite water filter with the 1 Litre bag so I can chemically treat as well if I get to more populated areas…best kit item of mine for sure… I especially like your videos Darwin because like you I’m tall so I always appreciate your clothing concerns…. For rain I use frog togs…but that hoodie looks like an excellent choice so I’m considering it…Titanium mugs are great..but I wish one of the companies would make one in a Stanley 2 person cook set form with the same sized fold out handle with measurements and an inserted ultralight cup for severe cold weather…because nobody loves mugs stuck to their mouth…
I’m not surprised you chose that shelter..but it makes me curious as to why you didn’t stick with the Six Moons Designs Lunar Solo you were stoked about….I keep looking on you tube at Dan Durstons X mid and want to see a side by side comparison with the lunar solo in a severe rain storm…..lol
Anyway hats off for the gear review…always love light weight gear! The shoes I’ve been wearing are from Columbia and I love them…far better for non slip on wet rocks then the Merrels I was using…very breathable for summer too…far less weight…and completely waterproof..so I love them…only down side was the price tag of $230 of course….
The Easton products are always great.. btw… The U.S. military specified it wanted Easton poles with its E.C.W.T. extreme cold weather tent…for good reason.
Always a pleasure Darwin and keep up the good work..I appreciate you brother…
Sawyer water filters have failed on you? Could you give us more information on that? I’m currently using a Sawyer.
I’m going to buy all these gear so I can have I better hiking!
I’m not too stoked about that Nemo moki. That’s a 1,500 tent ⛺️. You can take that 1,500 dollars and buy a hilleberg, sleeping bag and a pad. Or even better…. a Tigris hot tent for 150.00 bucks, with a Winnerwell Fastfold Titanium Tent Stove.
In case anyone is wondering, the All-Paca hoodie is $145 and the Zpacks Verice rain jacket is $260. Also, in case anyone is wondering, my birthday is coming up.
Hey there. Just recently discovered your channel and love it. My favorite gear is WWII Kbar knife that my Grampa gave me. Also live my USMC canteen cup and plastic canteen. I don’t mind the weight. Question: does that rain jacket (also hoodie) also have longer sleeves? I’m 6’5″ with arms like a gorilla (can practically walk on my knuckles ) Thanks .
Two questions…How tall are you? What size is the App gear hoodie? New to the channel love your positive energy and the amazingly clear and informative videos, keep up the great work!
What size do you wear in the Zpacks rain jacket? I’m about your same size.
Darwin what do you think of these tent pegs? They seem to to be the same construction as the Tarptent ones, but with added strength at the top as the hole is drilled through the cap and shaft: http://bigskyproducts.com/big-sky-tube-steak-stake-peg.aspx
Thanks to your video I ordered the Altra 1.5 shoes. Hopefully they will be great!
Man I really want that App Gear Hoodie, looks absolutely amazing, but it’s way out of my price range:(
I don’t do through hiking. I started watching your video’s for research for motorbike camping gear. I need to pack small and light on the bike. The only hiking I do is day hiking for gold fossicking. Things I can’t live without when I’m out and about are 1. Tiny propane stove and gas. 2. Metal Billy. 3. Travel Berkey Water Filter. 4.Face Sock. 5.Home made Fire starting kit. 6. Home made insect repellent kit (I’m highly allergic dang it all). And if I’m not packing light but just packing the truck for camping I can’t live with out my cast iron frypan!
Just came here randomly… I’m a very occasional hiker (50km 2-3 times a year). I’ve always worn hiking boots, why do you prefer hiking shoes?
I’ve never considered those
How did the sawyer filter fail you? Just asking because I’m using one right now and want to know what to lookout for.
My favorite piece of gear from 2019 is my Keith 450ml, titanium double walled mug. I found my coffee always getting cold before I got to the bottom of the cup outside. So, I wanted something double walled with a lid and this mug ticked both boxes. I don’t actually like the lid so I don’t use it, but that’s OK because the difference a double walled mug makes in keeping your drink hot is remarkable. I highly recommend getting this or any other double walled mug if you like your drinks to stay hot.
+1 for the Katadyn BeFree. It’s my go-to for water filtration as well.
If anyone’s interested, I just did a review of it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSiJ1GdjOeE
I would recomment the Vargo Ti Nail Peg over The Easton Nano. If the nano gets ANY side pressure on it while you are putting it in it will snap right in half.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Are you sure you are in the right profession? You have an amazing camera presence. Please go to Hollywood. I’m sure you will get casted for all religious, historic and military movies..:D I subscribed!
Hi Darwin!
My wife and i recently hiked the overland track in Tasmania, Australia and our favorite piece of gear was the brand new Optimus Crux stove that we recently purchased. Having never used a lightweight stove before, we were blow away with the quick cooking times, light weight and easy folding away of this little guy. here is a link if you are interested ever! https://www.optimusstoves.com/us/us/6-8019260-optimus-crux
Love the videos. keep up the great work and keep living the dream!
Hayden
Darwin, if you want to see how ridiculous and distracting your hand movements are… watch your vid at 2x speed…
“cooking on the trail” = adding hot water to dehydrated food.
Favourite gear of 2019:
Osprey Stratos 36
Kathmandu Lansan Ultralight Tent
MSR PocketRocket 2
Kathmandu Pathfinder Water Repellant Goose Down Sleeping bag
Can you share what you mean when you say your Sawyer failed? I’m curious as I own one and have used it on several trips.
That hot pocket looks dumb . Everything will be all good, until you get caught in a rain or snow situation, then get electricuted☇☇☇☇☈⛈⛈⛈⛈.
gotta wonder how people like this guy afford to basically never work and spend 10 months out of the year hiking.
Great choices,,, sounds like you have all the right gear, but here we are Darwin,it’s a new year, what’s the New Gear!?!!?
I stole my metal canteen when I checked out from the marine corps… my most dependable piece of equipment… ❤️
The Alpaca Hodie is way to expensive.. Darwin is this and the tarp truly worth the money?
And please best light weight underquilt at a budget. Bought, modified or borrowed:)
My guy is all about ultralight gear and then upgrades to a dslr
Does the Katadyne filter work with the CNOC or do we have to buy their bottle too?
Suggestions,
You could substitute the fanny pack with a chestpack and have gear more accessible and out of your main pack.
For tent stakes, pick up a Victorinox Hiker and watch a few videos on how to make tent stakes and you never have to carry stakes again! Lol
Hiya. Do you have a video (or can you make one) talking about the first-aid gear you carry?
I see ya wear features socks. They’re the best. But where do ya carry a pistol?
Easton used to be THE go to brand when you needed an unbreakable drumstick.
For sure the Appalachian Gear’s hoodie rocks: Alpaca wool!!!
Is this Ti mug from the same SnowPeak that has become the world leader for air-guns (as an OEM company: they don’t sell their air guns on their own brand, e.g. all Diana and Artemis gear are from ’em, and many others)
It’s funny how different outdoor gear is for guys mostly hiking in the US compared to guys hiking in Europe. My stuff for Europe (mostly Norway, cold, windy, rainy, swampy areas) is much heavier but withstands storms, holds me warm sub zero (in summer that is…) and so far nothing broke. But I carry around about 12kg base weight + food and gas. Usually I get to 20kg for a 2 week hike.
But this includes a 4 season tent (hilleberg akto), a -5°C comfort zone sleeping bag (western mountaineering) and a thick self-inflating mat… plus a set of warm underwear ( merino wool) and complete hardshell rainproof outer layer.
delete the word ¨pack¨ from this and the fanny has to go to number 1.
it goes up and down, he’s tried multiple different fannys, it rides smooth, and he’s uses it when his in town.
Lol.. antimicrobial doesn’t mean anti filth. It just means that it won’t mold or rot. IDK how hipsters got the idea that it means you stink less if you wear Merino. It still gets covered in your funk and wafts it out into the world like any other clothing.
Looks more like a belly pack. Your alpaca hoodie is way better, but I bought 2 Eddie Bauer Firstacent half merino wool quarter zip turtlenecks. Wear all the time. Bought Norwegian Eagle 1.4 liter kettle and Heavy Cover titanium canteen and cup/cover. Depending on how light I am traveling. Both are popular in bushcraft.
Those are excellent gear suggestions. My wife loves the idea of the camera clip to help with recording for our channel, and she loves to shoot all of the time, so we will order one of them. Thank you for sharing.
ayeee. I know that desk. Sick desk for a hundred bucks at big lots.
@darwin onthetrail hi Darwrin! i was wondering about the reliability of the peak design capture, i’ve heard some horror stories from people using mirrorless cameras having their unit fail on them, but i plan on mounting a heavier camera on it but with expensive glass i get a bit paranoid
My favorite piece of gear is my Exped SynMat HL Sleeping Pad. It’s perhaps a bit heavier than the torso sit pads that many people use, but for the importance of sleep on my body’s recovery after miles and miles of hiking with a pack on (and I’m still working on lightening my load to a more Ultralight set up), this piece of gear has made my list since I started using it about 5 years ago. I’ve never popped a hole in it, and it blows up super fast for me and it really helps keep me warm at night, especially when I made the switch from a standard sleeping bag to a quilt.
I’ve been camping my whole life and I’ve been broken a stake. Are you using a jackhammer to put them in the ground??
Absolute rubbish. This is a product endorsement video. If you can’t go camping wild without the cheapest stuff. Don’t do it. Or. Like this Joker. Go out buy buy bye bye…
Ive enjoyed all your videos…its too bad you did the AT before you became so involved in your videos. It would have been great to watch videros from an AT complete thruhike like the ones you put out for the PCT and others. It would be nice to see you do the AT again and video it in the same manner as the rest of your thruhikes…maybe some day?!? I can tell you that the 2nd time I thruhiked the AT it was SO much more enjoyable for reasons that I am sure you can understand. My second time around was more fulfilling than the first primarily because I already knew the logistics of doing it. It did make a huge difference. Im anxious to see what my third thruhike of the AT will be like….then its on to the PCT and, Im thinking, the AZT. I lived in Tucson for a couple of years and seriously considered the AZT but decided to do the 2nd hike of the AT instead. After watching your vids of the AZT its on my list directly after the PCT. Happy trails…
What was your favourite 5 individual days hiking last year.
love your videos. I haven’t found a decent tent stake either. Been tying down to rocks or gear. Dude, get a lighter camera. Gotta try that alpaca hoodie. Would like to see a zip up though. A mug, lol. My neck gaiter is the best gear I have which I got the idea from Darwin when he liked shoe gaiters. It cover your head at night, bugs, warms the neck & face, back up towel, sling, use one as a seat cover (another idea I got from Darwin), etc. Thanks, Darwin. I’m thinking of doing videos on gear and all things camping/hiking for disabled people like myself. Any tips?
My MSR Elixer 2 as I can’t afford a lighter tent. Comes with foot print full fly I have use it from 30 degrees celcius to -25 degrees celcius.
Question: have you ever thought of backpacking any Canadian trails?
My Silverfire Scout stove has been great for short Kayak camp trips. It packs in the MSR Alpine pot.
Man, can’t wait for the warmer weather so I can start backpacking
Got all the gear now it’s just a waiting game. You guys make backpacking sound so much fun.

Hi there! My favorite gear is my compression pantyhose with a class 2 compression! It gives me the warmth and compression I need to keep up with my husband on long distance hiking!
I found if you pound the stakes with a rock they will bend. Haven’t tried the aluminum Easton stakes. But I have all the other ones you showed. Only bent the groundhog and v stake from Dutch wear. I got Shepard’s book but never even bothered trying to bring those with as I’ll bend them guaranteed. They are janky.
