I almost drowned on Oklahoma while slipping on a rock. My uncle luckily saved me. Im more scared of water now…
Example of a main set for a speed work day I did recently.
5 rounds of 6x25m on 30 at 200 pace… after each set of 6, 50 easy on 1:30. I tracked it with my Phlex and averaged 15.2 on the 25s.
Oh and that was butterfly .
I like how you explains things. It is clear and easy to understand. Nice job.
How to get better with fins??? 1000m swim time needs to be below 18 minutes, but straight flutter kick no freestyle
Great. Is there something I can watch that’s between getting to know what water is and competitive freestyle swimming…?
I love that catch up drill. If you don’t have a PVC pipe on-hand, you can also cut up a foam pool noodle and use that:)
Hey there, i have a question. In speed session 16x25m with 4th fast and 15 sec recovery means: swim 100m(last 25m fast) and then wait 15 sec and do 4 it for four times? Am i wrong?
What’s an “easy pull”?! Sorry if I missed that…..all this Tri swimmer jargon is a bit lost on me.
Here I haven’t been exercising for years and just looking for a “Beginner workout” and I get a triathlon workout. Thanks Youtube.
Any advice for a struggling beginner? I try, but I panic so much in the water that I keep almost drowning in 3ft of water. 3ft!! It’s ridiculous and my friend makes so much fun of me…. I really want to get better at swimming.
this was in my recommendation and i think it’s a sign to start swimming
Awesome
@Globaltriathlonnetwork Any tips on remembering how many lengths I’ve completed as I swim??
GTN sets an even higher standard! My eyes usually glaze over when someone suggests swim sets, but now I understand what and why, except I need to go back for screenshots. Thanks!
I know swim but I have panic attacks if I swim I feel like I’m sinking any tips please thank you
When you have to learn how to swim by urself bc ur school is making you swim and they won’t teach you
The only drill here that is worth anything is the “Fist Drill”. It is beneficial for the reasons stated. ALL the other drills are worthless or even harmful to an efficient stroke because they promote over gliding. As stated, water is 800 times more dense than air. So if there is ANY pause in your stroke, you will come to an abrupt stop. Distance per stroke is ONLY important when coupled with an appropriate stroke rate and should never be isolated.
Thanks for remembering us. Other topics: breathing, stroke mechanics, good cross training for swimmers to make them better, proper kick, how to avoid burnout, etc. My biggest hurdle as a novice has been breathing properly and relaxing, as having endurance. I’m good for about 4-6 laps and have to stop. Goal is to swim not necessarily fast, but for a longer duration.
why I’m watching this at 1 AM on a cold December night ♀️
Who else is watching this because your going into highschool next year
Why am I even here? Because of Covid, the pool where I live is closed, and it’s god damn 2:32 in the morning.
Hey I really like this overview! This a great starter for all.
I’m here after almost drowning in a reservoir 26m deep Horrific first experience with water.
I’d usually have a session planned but some days I get extremely demoralized when I can’t complete the sets/keep up with the time.
What would you recommend?
Also, I think it’d be nice to talk about training fatigue, how to recognize them and how to deal with them:)
Thanks and keep up the amazing work!!
Hi I’m learning to swim for the first time, since I’d like to join the navy. I’d just like to ask, is opening your eyes in chlorinated water bad?
Thanks for the high quality videos from you guys, I have learned a lot and you are a great team:)
I have been swimming freestyle frequently for a couple of years, and get compliments about my technique. Until now, my sets have always been very technique-focused always with some balance and rotation drills. However, my endurance is really, really, really bad. I mostly able to only swim 50s with breaks. I usually breathe every two to the right, but lately have been trying to use every three more, also trying to learn tumble turns. Learning this seems not very compatible with swimming more lengths though, especially since breathing to my left is more complicated due to less exhaling and rotation and the tumble turn attempts right now easily make me lack oxygen.
I got a recommendation to try swimming 100s at around 2:00 pace, with 30s breaks inbetween. Right now this seems totally impossibly, although I can swim a 25 at 30s without trouble. I also believe that I should really focus on the endurance part, and possibly put the tumble turns and bilateral breathing aside, or maybe making it its own part of a set. Not sure on how to incorporate this.
I feel a bit lost on how to structure a set, to be honest. Would you recommend using fins to string together more lengths, or would this be doing myself more bad?
I was gonna join planet fitness since its cheap but i think ill choose the gym that has a Olympic swimming pool

you have great skill of giving 2 mins worth of information in 10 mins…
This guy explains it better than the other videos i’ve watched about learning how to swim. Keep it up!
I’m sure these are good reps but as someone new to the sport these are hardly beginner sets. This type of expectation just puts people off who are new to Tri so please include something more realistic for real beginners.
I love one hand drill Wich is almost like catch-up drill but we have to continue with one hand till the end and to switch hand for the next lap
Mmh not a lot of butterfly/backstroke/breaststroke in there, I like mixing things with those other swim styles, during the warmup or between sets
Is it OK to add a speed set to the end of any of the other workouts?
Great video as always. Looking forward to changing my usual training with these.
It’s better to learn it during childhood? Well there goes my enthusiasm ♂️
I’m gonna start taking swimming lessons at my school tomorrow! I’m watching to prepare, I want to become a competitive swimmer cause i think it’s one of the coolest sports!
Great swim sets. You can also find more workouts on places like SwimSwam.com or I’ve actually found swim sets on Pinterest.com
Isn’t that a rehash of an earlier video? Hmm! Drunk on too much eggnog and pushed the repeat button?
How long should the PVC pipe be for age group kids? Thank you:)

Great workout ideas! Just to clarify: for the speed session, are you taking the 30/25/20/15s recovery after every 25m, or at the end of each block of 25ms that you prescribe? E.g. for the first set, do I take 30 seconds rest after each 25 meters, or at the end of the 16 x 25m?
How do I breath? Not just swimming or even in training, but in general day to day life.
So for each swimming sesh how many minutes to roughly calculate?
Another Aerobic main set example500-400-300-200-100 for a 1500m set. Or 400-300-200-100 for 1000m.
diving into the pool with my phone and occasionaly checking the video if I am doing it right.. lol
I learnt swimming on my own (my style)and swim few times by removing water from center towards sides by both hands with no leg movement. Still I moved. I know it’s not the correct way but I did move. But I feel scared getting my head inside water as I fear water will enter my nose and ears. Also I don’t know how to breath during swimming.
Guys give me your suggestions
For a beginner how many aerobic sessions per week, and is the idea to start with the shorter sets then move up to the 500m sets? Great vid as always Thanks.
Now admittedly I don’t watch every GTN eps but have you ever addressed the long trunk vs speedo issue? I’ve noticed Mark uses both….why? What exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
i cant even see clearly without my glasses and u expect me to not wear goggles in water?! hahahaha i cant see shitt
Mark please make a list of essential swimming paraphernalia for beginners.
Hi All, can anybody let me know as beginner upto what depth should I be in the pool?? As I am 5 ft heighted..Also I became frightened when water crosses above my shoulder in standing position.
I’ll be doing my first sprint distance in may and my first Olympic triathlon in June. I’m fairly confident in my running and cycling capabilities, but I’ve only learned how to swim freestyle this summer. I can almost swim the distance, but my pace really is lacking. I’m currently doing 3min/100m. Keep in mind, I’ve never done a speed session in my life. Should is start doing these now? Or should I wait a bit longer, focus on my technique and start doing these speed sessions closer to the race.
Also, happy New Year everyone!
Thanks for this video! Besides knowing what to do? How about knowing how to plan interval swims and how to train with a pace clock? I’ve encountered workouts with send-off times with the fastest, mid, and slowest times like 1:15/ 1:20/ 2:00. How are those determined and which to use?
I’d like to add a recovery session into the mix. Really helpful post a long bike/run session.
When I open my eyes underwater It starts to burn and it’s so painful
The incorrect technique still looks good compared to mine trying to do the correct way. ♀️
How come the speed workout is the highest in terms of volume, at 3000m in total?
Thanks for these tips. What do you mean by pulls? Is that isolated arm work?
The only pool I have access to is the YMCA pool but I don’t wanna hog the lanes when I don’t know how to swim. When they remove the lanes for open pool there is usually 10 people there but i might look weird going alone:/
Always wondered what are those yellow and blue things on your right? Are those kayaks? Why are there kayaks in a pool?
Swimming is amazing for the mind, body, and soul! Happy Swimming!
Are those Magic5 goggles? Are they dark enough for swimming outside?
It’s literally winter and my brain be like why don’t we watch videos on how to swim
I’m kinda stressing cuz when the school year starts, I’ll have pool class in 13 ft water and I don’t want to drown. It’s also July, and I am trying to watch as much videos as ever to help me swim. Rip me
hi, what do you mean when you say 2 times 3, 3 times 3, and 4 times 3?
Who else is watching this 10 minute before you swim jamming it into your brain
I don’t know how to swim very well and I wasnt planning on learning. But when you said “imagine you are floating in space”… now that changed my mind!
I feel like while I’m sprinting freestyle my kick is useless and not helping me move. Like I’m just pulling. Any tips
Taking a look at these comments makes me not feel bad that I don’t know how to swim
Thank you GTN for covering a topic which every coach will have their own view on.
In all sports the ethos: ‘first move well. then move often’ is as good an ethos as any such an ethos if undertaken and overseen under the tutelage of a triathlon/open water swim specific coach would be the best way for a newbie to not only start their swim improvement journey, but for them to stay on the right tracks.
Too many athletes (and especially triathletes) simply progress to too much distance too quickly.
Keep up the good content GTN
All the best to you ALL for 2020
Tip #1: Search the world over for a competition pool as beautiful as this one.
How are we supposed to learn swimming when the coronavirus pandemic is forcing us to stay in our homes…….
Amazing work and drills!! Really good how you explain your work. Also, how could I get the t shirt of swim pro?
I swim exactly like the tense incorrect guy. Room for improvement, I guess
Happy new year to the GTN team great vids as ever loving being part of the growing tri Youtube community!
Please tell me handstroke & breath ratio.how to exhale while swimming
4:42 What’s up with the guy in the other lane?
Also thanks for tips, it’s always good to have a refresher, in my pool we swim clockwise.
I want to try to sink but im afraid that i cant get up, any tip plZ?
This was really nicely put together! I wish there were 30 videos like this for me to reference! Great job!
First of all, happy new year for the GTN team! Mark thanks for your swim session! this video is the one I’ve been looking forward from GTN!
Hi GTN, I have been enjoying your channel and have been trying to improve my freestyle.
I do not have a swimming back ground, however this year I have decided to set myself the challenge of being able to swim 50M butterfly.
I would appreciate any tips that you have on how to butterfly correctly.
A video to watch would naturally be helpful.
What do I train in the aerobics session? BTW: Thanks to GTN for all the great content!
Thanks for all the videos and effort you put in MSP team! Looking forward for more
PS Love the positive vibe Paige always give off
PSS Unfortunately if you have any sort of back pain pull buoy is no go. Can make it worse big time. I am really really hope MSP will add more plans focused on those who have back pain and has to avoid pull buoy drills
Is there any pro forma timing targets for the 25/50/100/400/1000 m for the beginners for each type of session above? I can do 2-3km in a slow pace, but whats the point…Thanks a lot! Happy 2020!
Lol honestly when i was teaching myself i just went straight into swimming. On the way i taught myself how to breath and float by just jumping into it and not doing all these exercises. Im 27 by the way, so its never too late to learn
I had a strange dream in which i was dying in water cuz i can’t swim so here I am!
Hey @Global Triathlon Network any ides how to “translate” your speed session proposal into 50 m pool (you are proposing only for 25 m runs)?
Had my first Triathlon today olympic distance, 2:45, thanks for all the great Tips on this channel
Very good advice, this is indeed the first step, to feel the water, get comfortable in it.
For the younger kids (and how I learned it) the zipper drill can also be called the ‘Tickle Drill’. haha.
Who’s also here bc their dad wont teach them saying they learned by themselves and you should do the same
I am 24 now. Can i learn swimming now. I was so afraid in early teens to learn it. I lack motor skills. Can i do it
I’m sooo happy I got into swimming and stayed on long enough to get to the third lane!!! Then I quit cause the water was too cold but-
I’m 13, and I just get out out of breath to fast, I’m not a noob either, I probably just need to loose some weight, but any tips?
I taught myself how to swim and it was harddddd. The breakthrough came when l learned to float. That’s the key. Learn to float first on back then face down. Then swimming is easy!
swimming is easy. you gotta learn to tread first. tie a heavy rope to diving board and put rope in the water over the edge. practice treading water near the rope so if you sink you can pull yourself up. after 15 minutes I was treading water. now I swim like a fish
If I went under water and stayed down for longer than 2 seconds they think I am drowning
Damn, I first try swimming age 24, I thought wasn’t hard. Enter in the water chest deep the felling of the water maked me hyperventilate and almost panic attack. Get to a smaller water waist deep. Bent down try to swim and a big wave come over me and it knocked me down, I fucking swallowed sea water and panicked a bit. That was my first experience, now I am more confortabile in water, but still can’t swim.
” There is nothing dangerous with it ”
Water literally entering in my nose and starts to drown
I was trying to learn how to swim today, but i got one problem. My legs sink to the bottom all the time.
Don’t fight with the water I don’t but is hard not to lol they should use me as example of everything wrong
I enjoy your videos. I learn a bit each time and it gives me suggestions to my swim coach.
why don’t GTN provide training paid sessions to the public you have the obvious training coaches to do so!!!!
Nice timing before my friday swim workout.
I always start with a 100m sprint and try to beat my personal best.
Than a 1-2 or 3k also try to beat my pb
As last i do 10 interval sprints with 1min rest between.
Great video, both for Run and Swim weekly workouts. Just missing the 3 cycling workouts now! Looking forward for that one!
Best,
Hi guys I’m 58 never really been a swimmer but determined to do the London tri in august this year with my son, just started swimming ♂️ at my local pool in Hornchurch which at present is 33 metres long I managed 1 length before my lungs were going to make there own way out of the pool and back to the changing room ♂️ I’m going for the sprint distance which is 750 metres long, judging by today’s attempt would I progress quick enough over the 8 months to achieve 750 metres, I would like to do all front crawl, do you think this would be achievable I know I could drop down to breastroke but would prefer all front crawl, got myself some floaty pants to help me, any suggestions or tips would be very welcoming, love your Chanel, all the best you guys for 2020 xxx
I just swim 3k free and maybe 250 m of breast and back I think I’ll use your tips
one thing which is important is you must not forget to try to breathe in through your mouth and breathe out through your nostrils when you are in water.
Great video, thanks very much! I was wondering, if my freestyle swimming is week, but my breaststroke is pretty strong, should I focus on learning freestyle? or improving my breaststroke further? Hamburg Olympic in July
Evgeny Thank you so much for being so kind and start from true beginnings as getting comfortable in a water and not showing off so I will feel intimidated. Just getting back to proper swimming and happy to watch it now in bed:) after 500m of swimming. Thank you! ❤️ Cant wait to learn free style from you!
Can we have swimming lessons for kids because Because I’m a kid and I want to learn how to swim ♀️
Having signed up for my first two Olympic triathlons this year, this video was just what I needed. It’s saved, and will definitely come back to it in the future. Thanks for helping me start my training, and new year off right!
