A description of many of the most commonly used Yin Yoga postures, or asanas, will be provided, along with some suggested ways to build these postures into flows, and into a complete yoga practice. Around the final bend will be an exploration of how to move energy. The purpose of yin yoga is to activate the flow of energy in the body. It stimulates the joints, muscle groups to increase the range of motion of the body. Our health and our fitness condition are defined by our range of motion, not our age.

Yin Yoga is a slower-paced style of yoga that still utilizes asanas to promote exercise. The difference is that the Yin asanas are held for longer than typical yoga poses: usually between 2 seconds and 3 minutes but sometimes as long as 5 minutes or more.Yin Poses. Yin poses are derived from traditional yoga poses, though they have been renamed to distinguish them. Thus, cobbler’s pose becomes butterfly, plow pose becomes snail, and pigeon pose becomes sleeping swan.

Introduction to Meridian Theory and Yin Yoga We take a look at the 12 main meridians according to the Daoist Meridian Theory, what happens when they’re out of balance, and how you can implement them in your yoga practice for emotional wellbeing.Yin yoga is the perfect balance to those intense exercises, providing a slower, more meditative counterpart to help you round out your workouts. Yin yoga is also for anyone who is dealing with injuries or a chronic condition like arthritis or osteoporosis as this style in particular is a more restorative practice than other forms of exercise.Yin Yoga is a fairly new form of yoga that is quite popular among practitioners around the world for being an immensely meditative and therapeutic practice.
Yin yoga combines two great eastern philosophies of Yoga and Taoism to provide the perfect balance to a vigorous (Vinyasa/Power) – ‘yang’ yoga practice. Two offerings are available: a short 8-hour Yin Yoga session and a full 50-hour online Yin Yoga Teacher Training program. Both of these trainings are eligible for continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance.
The 50-hour online Yin Yoga Teacher Training course is very similar to the in-person offering.Inspired by philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine, modern-day Yin Yoga primarily focuses on your body’s meridians. Meridians are invisible pathways in your body that carry energy, or Qi. The deep postures of Yin Yoga work with your meridians to boost your overall health and wellbeing.

Yin Yoga. The part of your day that you set aside to draw your attention and focus inwards, to be still and to give yourself a rest from the outside world. In this style of Yoga, which is very similar to restorative, we will focus on longer holds, stillness, and an exploration of internal sensations, thoughts and emotions to become clearer, happier individuals.

Loved this one. It was a perfect way to start up my day. I will definitely do this again… many times.
My therapist recommend Yin yoga to help me slow down and be mindful.
This was wonderful! I am surprised that I enjoyed yin so much. As someone who is constantly trying to lose weight, I don’t usually “waste my time” on any kind of exercise that doesn’t burn calories. I always focus on vinyasa when I do yoga. But now that I’m moving deeper into a yoga practice for more reasons than just physical health and approaching different styles with an open mind, I have found that so far vinyasa has been my least favorite! This series is a great idea for anyone starting out. Thanks Brett!
I have yet to try yin yoga but it was recommended to me by my Doctor. I’m gonna give it a go! Thank you. Informative.
.What a lovely class, you really helped me surrender into my discomfort:) thank you so much..
Hi Brett! I just took your class and it seems that I like Yin the most thus far. I have been attracted to Yin because I have mainly done cardio and weights most of my life but I also want to be able to touch my toes one day without bending my knees, lay down and have my forehead touch my legs, and even be able to do the splits. It seems Yin would offer that. Yes? One thing you said in the class I have a question about. You said Yin is more about the connective tissue stretching as well as the joints but not so much the muscles. Given my ambitions is Yin best for me or is a stretching class or different style of Yoga better. Thank you in advance for your feedback. I am looking forward to my next class.
You are a delightful teacher. Supa encouraging!! I do this class every so often and love it every-time!! Thanks for your good energy and for taking the time to make these clips which help us all so much. Blessings Brett.
How many times a week should one practice yoga to really get the benefits? Thank you for sharing!
Short and sweet…a few poses targeting the body areas most likely to get stiff. Thanks Chris.
I loved every minute. So relaxing, calm and peaceful! Thank you!
I am so grateful to have found you! This is a much needed practice in my world of chronic pain and Lyme disease. Over the years I have attempted other forms of yoga, but felt that was moving beyond the foundation of where you helped me to go today. Sacro illiac -whew! This will be a mainstay for me in my healing processes and learning how to walk again. Thankyou for leading me in your compassionate, understanding tone. One day, little by little, I will have some form of a life instead of merely trying to survive. Thankyou, with heart felt gratitude, prayers for you, my new friend!
I really enjoyed this video. I feel GREAT!! It’s amazing to feel myself going deeper into the stretch with each breath♀️
I used to enjoy this regular night time it was good to go back to it and forget, remember it was basically a root yin thanks
Love the outcome, I’m working on an injured hip and its helping relieve pain and increase flexibility. But totally challenged by the stillness, especially when feeling some pain and discomfort.
Who can bend their hand completely backwards like that? And I have a bad knee so this is’t for me.
Thank you very much for this class. It was exactly what I needed after doing your 10 minute morning practice.I really liked the music you used and the fact that you keep quite during the poses . Your quality of the lessons is really high and I’m happy I discovered your channel!
How can I do these poses when I have degenerative changes shortening and stiffening my spine and with painful knees and painful shoulder on which I had surgery to repair a tear and I will never have full range of motion? And the pain is more than I can bear.
I found this practice very helpful to relax my mind and improve my flexibility at the same time. This goes hand in hand with the practice of yoga nidra. From my heart to yours, thank you and namaste
I just came across this, miss going to my Yin Yoga Classes in Quarantine♀️ this was just perfect thank you so much Namaste
I am new to yoga but interested in learning more. I wanted to try yin yoga as I am pretty out of shape and I wanted something more relaxing and calming than some of the other yoga styles I have seen. Thank you for this video. I tried it for the first time today and it was just what I needed. Some of the poses were very difficult but I will keep trying until I get them.
me: crippling in agony trying to sit on toes
Kassandra: and this pose is especially challenging if you often wear restrictive shoes
me, a waitress: (⊙_⊙’)
That was wonderful. First time today that my anxiety has calmed down. Thank you.
What is the best way to enjoy your own time when kids & in-laws + a husband in a same roof? Do this yoga. I felt so calm & relax. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video Kassandra!! I loved your easy to follow instructions and stretches. I could not sit back on my heels with the toe stretches which were very difficult for me, any other suggestions regarding this pose?
I really like your explanations, for example coming to the mat cold for Yin. New sub! Thanks!
Wow very impressed how much I enjoyed it! I have done yin yoga before and was not too keen on it however I loved the way you guided us and the asanas were perfect for my needs. Thank you very much ⚘ namaste
I never really realised how stiff my muscles are. Having trouble with allmost every excersise.
Honestly this one was painfully slow and boring but I guess that is yin yoga
Just found you. I didn’t think I would make it through the full time but it went fast. THank you. Adding it to my routine for a bit.
I feel great after. First pose is the most difficult for me, however most rewarding after getting through, both physically and mentally. This is the most important series I’ve found on the internet. It has allowed me to find my style and get more comfotable and excited about doing yoga. Best teacher on the internet. In my opinion. I hope this review helps.
Today was my first time trying Yin Yoga. This style was recommended in a book I’m reading about energy clearing. I definitely enjoyed this video and style of yoga and would like to continue practicing it.
I had a pinched nerve back problem last year and I was told to check out yin yoga. I have always practiced since. Trying some vinyasa to help me grow back my strength after not being on a regular gym for almost a year now. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to us. I subscribe❣
I’m new to yin yoga but I really enjoy it and I love a feeling during and after practice <3 it's amazing how fast time goes during ying yoga classes and how relaxed it makes one feel:) thanks a lot! greetings from Sweden <3
All I can say is WOW! This not only made me want to go to sleep after I finished this it also strangely opened my sinuses. Weird but great. It was a challenge for me but I really love it. I had done some other yin practices with you but this one seemed much more intense. I guess Dragon is more challenging for me than pigeon. Thank you Brett for all of your awesome classes! Namaste!
was curious about this Yin Yoga. glad i was able to try it for 25 minutes. but i think i prefer the yoga when you move more. happy you are offering scholarships for those love this practice.
This is so great for me! I am very active and am very tight. No matter how much I stretch, I’m still tight, which makes me think I need to work the fascia more. Thanks!
Thank you! I am recuperating from a groin/adductor strain and this was wonderful for it!
well done!! Easy and clearly guided Yin class so hard to find and so needed!!
Great practice, I appreciate the sequence without the props. Namaste.
wow, just finished my first Yin yoga class,I feel incredible,it really helped loosen my tight hips and shoulders.I Will continue to do this always,in addition to my hatha yoga. thank you soooo much:)
Absolutely loved this and the flow of sequences. Feeling so nourished now thank you.
Thank you for your class Kassandra. Although taught in 2018, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience in 2020. Your teaching legacy remains perpetual.
lovely and relaxing great wrist work as I am a masseuse felt great.
Just what I needed. Yin is my new path, with you. Thank you, kind teacher.
That was wonderful!! Thank you so much. I love that I didn’t need props.
This was a wonderful evening practice during this COVID isolation…de-stress, feel good and feel gratitude. I especially like that you stayed through the shavasana. (It’s my one pet peeve about the videos..) Even though we aren’t together physically, I like to come out of shavasana and show gratitude to my instructor. Hard to do that when the instructor has “left the building!” Lol. Namaste!
Amazing class!!! Apart from not able to do toes squats ☺️
This was such a sweet sequence. I’m 37 years old and just getting back into yoga. One question I have osteoarthritis in my big toe joint, so the toe squat was super intense. I had to brace myself. But towards the end, I was sort of enjoying the pain. Still I’m wondering, is toe squat going to aggravate or ameliorate my osteoarthritis over time?
I am truly a beginner, daily I begin my day with one of your beginner workouts, this was amazing, such deep stretching.
I enjoyed Yin Yoga but wouldn´t be my daily pick.
BUT you would be certainly my pick for any practice:-)
Took a class of yin yoga for the first time yesterday and loved it so much!
Hi Kassandra, I love your Yin Yoga classes. The music during this class is amazing. What is it please?
Finally, staying in poses long enough to really relax! Perhaps I have found my yoga, some of the other forms feel too rushed for me. Although I do like the energy boost I get from Ashtanga, my carpal tunnel wrists are not happy if I practice it too often.:( Really nice video and instruction, thank you!
I love Yin yoga, it almost feels like a massage to my own body. Thank you for this amazing class!!
amazing thank you so much! I’m so tight from being at home during the coronavirus and miss my yoga classes so I am so glad to find you and feel motivated to continue at home now. thanks!
Omg I loved this! I have chronic fatigue syndrome and tried to practice for my health but really didn’t love yoga or get excited to practice because it always felt too fast for me & didn’t really feel as calming. I found Yin Yoga but the poses in other videos were still too hard. I am so proud I managed all of this today (modified but still amazing) & I love yoga now. Thank you so much Kassandra
I think this class is great, I have now practiced this twice and really feel the deep stretching relaxing, more like this Brett
Hi brett.i have done lots of yin yoga but yours was different in a good way.you are my favorite yoga instructor and you have the cutest baby bump ever. -From iran with love
I just completed this class. I thought I was not going to make it. Loved it will do it again.
Hey that was really great, I feel a lot betterthank you so much! I found all of it challenging enoughI’m not as flexible as I thought I was but my body feels much better now
I am physically unable to do the 2nd pose! My toes dont bend that way as my left foot has damaged metitarsals, is there a substitute for this pose? Pls and thank u x
Really enjoyed that Kassandra. Was feeling very tight from over training, that felt so good for body and mind. Toe stand good but
Woa, my body felt so tense! I was ignoring that for the last couple of weeks, but so glad I did this yoga practise to start up again. In the head to knee pose, the only thing I managed to do was to bend my head, the rest of my body was nog cooperating at all. Even after two years of regularly practising yoga, I’m still not able to bend over… Is this a physical thing, that my body is just not build for this, or do I need much more patience and practise? Thanks, namasté, Sara
That was amazing. I’ve avoided yin yoga because it’s always seemed prop heavy and I haven’t been practicing so long that I’ve invested in props. So I really appreciated this flow. I feel so open, this was wonderful, thank you.
Great yin class. You are a great teacher, really talented and so natural. Thanks, I practise almost every day Yin Yoga because you inspired me.
I love this. I used to prefer the more energetic forms of yoga but now my preference is definitely Yin Yoga
This practice was so wonderful-and went by way too fast! I’m going to have to try one of your 90-min ones:) Thank you!
Thank you Kassandra for this yin yoga class. I really appreciate the silence during the asanas, just perfect to feel the connection body-mind-soul and work on awareness. I feel grateful <3.
Thank you so much!!!! I’m chronically and terminally ill and have finally found a style that calms the anxiety of my situation while regaining my dancers body. It feels so good to move again. I’m combining this with my pulmonary rehab (aggressive cardio monitored by nurses) and my own cardio/stretch routine. Thank you thank thank you for helping to restore my hope. Here’s to being one Asana closer to being able to take a ballet class again. ♀️♥️
this is one of my favorite easy to follow very clear instruction, thanks for all your classes I like them a lot!
I am a beginner. I started Yoga 43 days ago, you’re one of my favorite instructors. Yin yoga is my preferred style when I wake up with racing thoughts or having an anxiety attack because I can be present with the stretch and tune in the non physical part of yoga while in a time lengthened pose
Thank you! It was very relaxing up until my cat started meowing and purring for attention
I loved it. it’s great if you don’t have too much time. I hope I can find more of you yin and maybe an hour long yin. Thanks so much. It was super and thanks for the explanation for why we would not warm up first. beneficial to know that.
I loved this class, I tried one of your yin class a week ago and have been doing them every evening for the last 7 days. I love it. This is another amazing video thank you so much for sharing the content. I am so grateful, your teaching is helping me transform inside and out is the most beautiful way! You are changing the world one video at a time. Namaste
Is it normal to always get a really bad throbbing headache after trying any yoga? Because I do:( Every single time. My posture however feels even more straight than it already is.
Someone told me that Yin Yoga is good for pain relief, is that true? Because of PTSD, I have chronic neck and back pain so I was recommended to try this out.
Enjoyed this and needed the gentle stretch…. helped calm n still my mind! Namaste
Thank you so much for this wonderful, relaxing class! I was stiff and sore from hiking and this helped gently stretch out my whole body. I also have tight outer hips and tight low back and the head to knee really helped relase my tight lower back muscles. I love your soft, soothing voice, and great specific instructions, as well as the calming background music! Excellent class! Thank you
My first Yin yoga class. Very, very nice class. Your voice, the music, just perfect. Also for me as others have said the toe squats were painful after a minute or two, but I will work on this. Namaste. Thank you.
Thank you! this was my first time trying Yin Yoga. It was very relaxing. I actually did it right after a 20 min HIIT workout and it was just perfect. I also liked that the poses chosen were not strenuous and were especially gentle on the arms!
Wow. First time trying Yin yoga. amazing. I feel so full of energy and so relaxed and calm at the same time. Some emotions came up. wow. amazing. I feel great. I’ll def try more yin yoga. thanks!
Thank you Kassandra. I can always rely upon one of your classes to stretch or just a quick 10 minute session. It is always a pleasure.
Eventually a yoga for me awesome teacher thank you so so so much
Trying yin for the first time today! The gentle vinyasa was not gentle for me at all I felt like I was working out lol. Thank you so much for explaining this I was so nervous to try yoga again but now I feel inspired
Your Yin Yoga tutorial has been the only thing to ease my lower back pain. Thank you
Thank you that was beautiful! Do you have any advice on how to modify dragon for the knee? I felt a lot of discomfort in my right knee despite a cushion.
Thanks Kassandra. I’ve missed my in person class and found your class. This was great. Like others, the toes squats more or less impossible but I just kept toes in position but was up on my knees rather than sitting on my feet. Just what I needed.
Thank you Kassandra! Grateful for your generous gifts to us.
I do yin yoga everyday. can i get by once a week or how many would be the minimum per week. thank you and I do enjoy the exercise
I love this! I can do all things with Yen Yoga…thank you for the long silences during pose. so peaceful
My wife and I did this class together. We both feel so ready for the day. This class is great for hips, both of us feel so open. The poses were held long enough to really get to a deep stretch. I also enjoyed how minimal the talking was, her voice is very soothing. This class was great!!!
I’m a 15 this year. Maybe because I’m new, I only feel a bit but I can tell my body is relax enough. This is my first time doing yoga because of quarantine. And I very like it. Can someone give me yoga recommend? I’m so thankful.
I have instant vertigo when i lay flat on the floor. Can i use a pillow? Thank you.
The music on this is just I can’t tell you how relaxing it is
Hi thanks for putting together this video it is really great because I don’t have props so it meant I could start straight away without needing anything. Also, I like yin yoga because it is easy to follow although holding poses certainly tests my patience!

I found the Yin style of yoga really challenging. It was a much needed stretch, and I did enjoy it, but it was not easy. However, it was truly beneficial and I will continue to keep it as a part of my practice. I do feel better mentally, emotionally and physically. Thank you, Brett, your classes never disappoint!
My fave! Thank you! This combined with Kundalini wow! Thank you Namaste
Most difficult for me, but great to slow down. Thanks for the practice. Namaste!
I started with yin yoga about 6 years ago when I saw that you had a beginners
course in it i was stoked as i have a bunch of equilibrium issues i need to address right now thx
A good video if you just want to stretch out sore or tight muscles but its not the right one if you are trying to break a sweat amd get your cardio up…
Thank you! I am going to my first Yin yoga class today! Your video explained and eased my hesitation about what the style is. I am new to yoga everything is new to me. Thank you, again!
Thank you this was a awesome class, My daughter loves your classes and sent me this one to start❤️
This hurt a lot but that’s expected after years of not stretching or exercising. You are the best and I will continue hoping it becomes easier. Thank you.
I’m trying to get my dad into yoga to support his joints as he gets older (he’s 54 years old now). So I searched out yin yoga as its perfect for older people who have no background in yoga and need to increase/maintain flexibility and joint function. Funnily enough, his name is Brett! Must be meant to be
Thank you for the great video; love it! I like to spend some more time in each pose and then extend the set with a Half Dragonfly, some neck stretches and end with a 10 minute-or-so Savasna.
I love this yoga! I have been trying to like yoga for the past 10 years, but failed. I’ve tried hatha, vinyasa, practiced bikram for almost a year. I have felt the need to wind down and stretch, especially from cardio and weights 3-4x a week. I started meditating recently and this style of yoga fits so perfectly with it:) I’m so happy I found it!!! THANK YOU.
The WholeHealth team did this practice to complement our daily Vinyasa sessions which we have been doing on Zoom (and to celebrate the full moon!) Lovely stretch, and still challenging in a different way.
Thank you so much, that was one of the most enjoyable at-home yoga experiences I have had. I am new to this channel and to Yin yoga, but I will definitely be back to try another of your videos.
Thanks so much, really enjoyed this practice. Loving my yin these days! Only constructive feedback is that the same music repeating over and over for 30 min is hard not to get annoyed by. I’m definitely going to do more of your yoga. Thanks again!
I loved thisit felt like exactly what I needed. I want to try more yin yoga! Thank you so much.
I just have one word to describe this: AMAZING!!! Thank you so much, Kassandra!
Usually when I do yoga because of aches it feels good for a bit but the pain comes back. Today I did this and I was ache free all day!
I am healing from three surgeries this summer. Yoga is helping me regain mobility in my leg hip and knee. This was great! I will definitely come back to it. Thank you.
This is the yoga I have been looking for! i have done some of these stretches before. I hope to see some more videos like this.
Um, just gorgeous. Love this practice. I’m a meditation teacher and currently working on a 200-hr YTT in Ashtanga. Will DEFINITELY be doing your 30-hr Yin training after I finish up.:-) <3 By the way, what is this piece of music, please? It's so mesmerising.
Love it. Thanks many for putting this intro together. Namaste
My first time with yin yoga. My body and my mind is still wondering what just happened ♀️
my Fave!! we need an hour long session!!!!! Thanks.. namaste!
I loved this video thank you for making and posting it. It is exactly what I needed this morning. Yoga is life!
This is the first Yin Yoga I’ve ever tried and it was great. It was also a bit surprising to me that during the first minute I seemed to be more flexible than during the minutes following it. It’s like the muscles are ok with the stretching for a while, but then they gradually change their mind and get a little bit stiffer. In order to keep the pose comfortable enough, I had to adjust each pose a bit.
Thank you for the opportunity to follow this. Loved it and will be adding this to my routine.
I like the video but Yin Yoga is not restorative, it is more intense and would not be suitable for people with injuries
this was just what my body needed! Never been to a yoga-class, but this is what I want from one! As an office-worker with busy days, a good stretch did me well! Thankyou!
Sounds like traditional Hatha yoga as taught in India where i was a student of Hatha during the 20 yrs i lived and worked there
That first twist blew my mind. Fantastic class, thank you so much!
That was my first time doing Yin. I’m definitely more of a vinyasa person. I love HIIT, lifting weights, and running, so this was a challenge. But I think in a really good way. And I love the way you guide us. This is my first time doing one of your videos and I just subscribed so I can do more. Thank you!
