Strength and Muscle Training for Equestrian and Jockeys Weight Training and Horse Riding. Horse riding, whether competitive equestrian, racing, recreational or competitive, can General Preparation for Weight Training. Weight training or resistance training.Riders who engage in a comprehensive, and consistent, strength training routine will quickly see improvements in their balance, seat, and coordination. Strong muscles result in better control over the horse, both from the ground, and in the saddle, and communication through seat, leg and hand aids.
Strength training for horses isn’t just limited to heavy draft breeds competing in pulling contests. Any horse in any discipline can benefit from a strength-building regimen, and any rider can put together a systematic, safe program to muscle up her mount. Try these simple tips to increase the muscle power of any horse. When doing strength training, I like to start with the larger muscles first, working toward the smaller muscles and finishing with the core muscles. The order you could use would be legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms and then core muscles.
Your core muscles are always working to stabilize your body while you are doing other exercises.Riding in general, requires a specific form of stamina, stability and suppleness to do it well. Your body requires good core muscle strength to help you stabilize well in the saddle. Using specific strength training that targets your core stability will not only help with posture but also improve your confidence in the saddle.
Any professional equestrian will tell you that core training exercises for horse riders are one of most essential element of any rider’s fitness goals. Having a strong and stable core supports good posture, balance/stability in the saddle, a fluid and following seat, and overall body alignment. It may seem simple to improve our core strength.Equestrians have lagged behind somewhat in the realization that strength training is as essential for peak performance in our sport as in any other. We give so much attention to our equine counterparts: conditioning, recovery, training.
Strength Training for the Equestrian Strength training is an essential component of fitness for all equestrians. Whether competing in dressage, jumping, cross country, reining, or perhaps even racing, a strong musculoskeletal system is.Requiring zero equipment, the circuit consists of five stations, each targeting one of the key physical areas jockeys use in horse racing, through exercises such as jumping lunges, flutter kicks, burpees and single‐leg deadlifts.During competition days, jockeys must be fresh for riding. Jockeys are advised to stay away from any activity that may limit their ability to perform the technical skills during the race.
Strength and Muscle Program. This weight training program puts equal importance on upper and lower body and core muscles. Perform 3 sets of 12 exercises. If you are a rider who leans to one side while in the saddle, you can stretch your piriformis muscles those muscles deep in your hips that allow your legs to drop down and reach around your horse’s sides. Sit in a chair with your chest up and shoulders relaxed.
Physically horse riding is a mix of isometric leg strength, upper body pushing and trunk strength. The nature of their sitting position on the horse is showing us that jockeys have a lot of tightness in the hip area and limited movement in the upper thoracic areas.Strength training involves weight and weight-lifting machines, and a jockey needs to train all their muscles in moderating so that their entire body can handle the stress of riding.

Where or who is your go-to source of information for “rider fitness”? I’ve tried to improve my riding through physical fitness because I have limited time in the saddle and I work on things that make sense to me but a professional source would be so much better.
Hi! Can you guys make an equestrian workout/diet channel please? That would be really cool!
Great exercises, Amelia.
Is that a mini Bosu ball you were standing on? I’ve only seen the large ones.

Hi total beautiful and amazing and inspireing pilates video please please do more pilates videos please do a pilates video with inverted bicycle and scissors in the air and feet and thanks for sharing awsome pilates teacher and pilates friend and you rock
I can really recommend working on your internal and external hip rotation. It has helped me a lot in a short amount of time doing stretches and exercises to gain more rotation and activation in the muscles in my hips and the deep muscles in the thighs. Been struggling for a while with not being able to keep the horse straight when riding in the arena, but only on the left. The horse just falls inwards, to the center of the arena and the more I’ve tried stop that from happening the worse it become. Never had that issue in the opposite direction. Every horse I rode did this, so the problem was clearly somewhere with me. Took me a couple of months to figure out it was my hips/pelvis. I can rotate externally really well in my left hip joint but the internal rotation is weak, I hade the opposite going on in my right hip joint.
I also got issues with a tilted pelvis which means I go hollow back really easily and that leads to an incorrect support of my spine, the core doesn’t activate properly when you are hollow backed. Which results in an easily tired lower back and a feeling of being disjointed where the pelvis and spine connects in the waist area. Doing these internal and external hip rotation exercises has helped me more easily find a better tilt on my pelvis, so it has been an positive influence not only for my hip rotation but also with correcting my pelvis tilt.
In the beginning I was only able to keep a correct pelvis tilt for short amounts of time when standing before getting tired, then when walking, but now I can do it when riding as well. I can’t manage keeping a correct tilt all the time however! I lack the muscles for it, but it is slowly getting better.
Thank you for this video! I love you and your vids so much!!
This killed me inside while actually doing it but it really improved my eq and ability to complete no stirrup November in May
All great but do you have an equivalent since not everyone has access to equipment used for the last exercise?
This is a great routine… can you please do a Cleck training plan or tell us about how he is being worked at the moment, how hard etc.?
The important second part to all strengthening is stretching. I fell on my butt on concrete stairs 30 years ago and have had nerve issues in my lower back ever since. After several trips to the physiotherapist I have my regimen of strengthening and stretching, (and my Schleese saddle, which is truly a godsend for me) and that keeps me going. I supplement with a small had held massager from Amazon that helps break up the potential knots that still want to form from time to time. Posture is also important and I find reinforcing it in everyday situations (e.g., at work) has benefits for my riding as well.
you guys are so cool and inspirational to me hank you for doing what you do ❤️

Life changing! I started this and personally, no stirrup work has gotten easier from my core and legs being stronger but a little more flowing too. ❤️
Exercises are great, these are great (love that saddle on a ball). BUT,,, IMO, the FIRST thing you should “learn”,, is HOW to fall properly. Yes, FALL OFF. No one wants to, and I’ve known a lot of people uptight n nervous cause they had a fall n it scared them. Go on line, (YouTube) and look up “Judo Fall practice”. You will find many. It’s taught in all martial arts practice. Practice falls every day. As we age, it can also prevent broken bones from simple slip and falls. I’ve never had any fear of falls, and have also been hit by a car while on a bike, (motorcycles are LESS dangerous than horses) my fall memory kicked in and truly saved me. This should be taught in conjunction with anyone that intends to take riding seriously. And I DO NOT understand why it isn’t…I do wish more instructors would do this, teach risk mitigation. Risk mitigation is so important. It means we can do the things we love, but learn the safest routes.
Thank you very important thanks for the knowledge my friend
Thank you so much! I’m going to start doing these everyday before I ride!
