if it’s above 70 degrees…. LOL where I live its permanently 86 degrees.
Hi! Do you have a video with information on a Heeler as a puppy? Like the timeframe of the vaccines and the deworming and vet checks?
I haven’t seen all your videos so not sure if you’ve also done one of her visits and cost.
I just got a heeler. She’s 9 weeks and 4 days old and would love to know more in advance. Trying to raise her the best way possible.
Noooooooooo. Retractable leashes are the devil. Don’t do it.
My dog is very powerful so if it sees this video he is going to drag me
It’s hilarious how dog owners have these big natural grins. Life’s just better with Scooby
i recently got a blue heeler 5 months old. also my first time having a dog!! and im so in love with him, his the most loving dog ever. But seen your videos really help me understand many things about my pup that i didnt know!
any suggestion on how to get my pup to be ready of the leash??? thanks much love
Nice video. I run with my cairn terrier. Only one question: Why don’t you use a harnass? It’s way better for their throat. My previous dog got trachea collapse because he used to pull on a collar before he was my dog. It was horrible. Vet recommended using a harnass when running. Again, no hate, just wondering.
Honestly it’s funny that you invest money into fancy equipment like the Trekz Aftershokz earphones for yourself, and at the same time your dog does not have an appropriate sports harness? I cannot un-see how much her neck gets yanked at while you run, especially around 5:40 when you pull her closer to you ouch. Why would you want to encourage people to do it like that when there are so many sports harnesses on the market? Your dog tolerates it because she is excited and happy to do things with you, but it is not comfortable or even healthy for her neck in the long run. Why go through the effort of even making a video on the topic without suitable and safe equipment for both running partners…
How could a harness give you more control over your dog?
I think what he meant was..harnesses are more profitable for us to sell
OK, my dog doesn’t walk on a loos leash heel… he ‘s an 11 month old black labrador… i just came home from my first start-to-canicross session and he did great!
3km of running, we did run in group and he had some quick dogs in front of him…
Could you continue the running with animals series by doing a video about running with children?
I feel like those headphones would be good for women who jog by themselves so they can be safer and more aware of their surroundings
I want to run with my dog but if I see another dog he’s gonna bark
We have a little dog and she allways attampts to trip me so i cant run with her
Liz, this is off topic but I wondered how Lou handled stairs. I was just reading a dog should not even try going down stairs until they are a year old. My Raylan is 10 weeks old right now I have had him 4 days. I have two stair cases one inside and one that goes down from a deck in the yard. The inside stairs are pretty steep and outside is a pretty long stair case. I just wondered how Lou did with stairs? Thanks for all your tips I am trying my best to do this right.
My Dog is at his happiest when he walks with me and I’m happy too.
My blue heeler does the same thing! he would sip water out of puddles lol
I have a Texas Heeler that does the same. If we run he’s right with me. If I walk he pulls.
Thanks for bringing up the fact that dogs cannot sweat. They pant to release heat and can only do this when they are at rest so if using a leash please monitor them and allow stops/water as needed as heat and the sun can be much worse for them than us. For some breeds an endurance run is quite difficult even if they appear eager initially as breeding may have been geared to quick sprints only. Our dogs are not not of the variety of this video (non-sporting types) so while I do run on leash with them at times it is only for fun/play and treat it as their outing, not mine so a lot of start-stop-sniff-repeat sessions:).
Hi there i liked your video on running with the dog. I have embeded your video into my article.
https://pinoyathletics.info/running-partner-dog/
I love Lou he’s so adorable. We have a red heeler but now I want a blue one too.
Just wondering why you have to wait til they’re a year old. I came here for some more tips but my Malamute pup is only 8 months and he did 2 half marathons with me in the last month
I’ve just got a hands free leash. I was on the hunt for a holster phone holder to attach to it as I’ve got a belt for my bits but it’s all a bit bulky. Maybe I’ll just stick to the belt if U recommend it
Lou is hillarious!!! Everyone is going to think cattle dogs are easy going lap dogs. I am watching this at work at 0650 and you running with Lou made me smile and feel better. Thx. Music was very good. This could be a great meditation video.
what mascara are you wearing here? your lashes are sooo long
Gonna try this with my dog but definitely on a harness so there’s no choking or tugging on the trachea:)
What Breed is Nora? I wanna get a dog that can run with me, but I’m soooo confused!!!!
Sorry but I had to dislike this, I run with my dog and would never use the neck style coller. In the video it shows the dog putting strain on the lead and pulling her back, therefore you are putting pressure on the dogs neck restricting breathing and possibly causing damaged to the neck.
Please, if you do run with your dog use a proper dog running harness, it’s much more humane to your dog than a collar.
The leash makes it look like Nora is taking you for a walk! Haha
I was wondering, did Lou ever have a problem with trying to heard you? My dog does this and will nip at my heels and I was wondering if you have any tips to help stop this? Love your channel!❤️
What about canicross, I use an X harness instead of a collar. I think is better.
Been following your videos for a while now, basically since i started taking running more seriously. However, i do a sport called canicross which is running with your dog. You should look into the kit they recommend for running with your dog. I have a trail dog, she is often with me on runs and goes on and off lead, i use a harness on the dog that doesn’t apply pressure around the throat or restrict shoulder movement, so she enjoys the run as much as i do. Keep the videos coming as they’ve helped me get down from 35 minute 5K to 20 in 18 months, plus shed 22KG.
Great topicIiving in town there not much room for exercise a dog but going national park or friends/family farm is where I take my dogs. I usually pack water, maybe ice cubes n first aid kit for dogs before going out. I let them run off leash but keep them insight. Great exercise tip is making them run back n forwards along sheep race (race holds sheep in narrow line before drafting sheep) and after exercise been outdoors I check dog over, looking for ticks. Check feet for broken claws or bleed feet. Don’t run dogs in summer heat or on hot pavement
what’s the name or brand of the headphones?A link would be helpful too!
My dog got attacked by a German shep mix last night while we were jogging together. Teeth didn’t break his skin. Rather than carrying my buck knife, is there an effective less lethal way to protect yourself. i was really angry last night.
Hi, you would do good to consider getting a harness for your dog when running and otherwise:)
Hands free dog leads are not alaways suitable, dogs have triggers and could pull you into danger like a road or water, my 9kg small dog can really pull when he wants to. Although well trained, it’s not to guide dog standards
Hi! Love your channel! Could you do a review on gps pet trackers that work for hiking with our dogs and also in the city? Thank youu!! Keep doing lovely videos!
I jog with my husky
and he is too active
every time I jog
he rans quickly
I am a 100 pound girl with a 60 pound lean pitbull who runs faster than I could ever run. Getting a leash attach on to me would be extremely dangerous because my pit does not do well even walking on a leash because the squirrels are a huge distraction. Any help or tips?
Awesome video! I would suggest getting her a harness as it supports her more instead of pulling and hurting her neck:)
For Nora … hehe
I have a dog almost 9 months old… border collie named Yuki. on 9.2. We started to run…i have never traind before….we did together 100k of trail run since we started… he loves to go and he is a super motivation for me also….. but i am asking myself now… should i leave my dog at home till he is a year old…or…?!?!?
we do 10k trail run (more or less) 4 times a week.
All dog owners trespass on the property of others, leave it covered in dog manure, and then sneak away.
How can anybody dislike this video. Your dog is awesome man. I’m in the process of training mine for runs, good video.
Thanks for this, I have wanted to take my dogs running but haven’t yet.
Your videos are already a lifesaver in understanding my cattle dog! Great job! Keep it up!
Yeah tried running with my dog. She just kept sitting and wouldn’t follow
Are you related to Quinn from impractical jokers in any way? You both look so similar
Maggie and I run 3-4 miles in the foothills every day. I wish I could have her off leash, but we have so much wildlife around coyotes, mostly that it isn’t safe for her to be loose. We see turkeys, bunnies, squirrels, and bobcats, too. I’m sure Lou loves it when you take him out to run with you; it’s such a bonding experience! Good for you!:D
Omg look at Lou being a baby in the beginning of the video. ❤️
You from California I am Indian I have visit California I think I have seen your dog
Hey Nate, any tips on a dog that has to stop and smell everything? Im constantly pulling her along or stopping for her to sniff/mark. She can run with me, its just she stops too often to make it enjoyable.
I run with my pal too. Great hints. How did you find her as my dog was a rescue and it was totally by accident that we started running together. I trained her to run on my left as we run toward traffic for safety. She has gone as far as 8-9 miles.
Did you know that humans could outrun horses on a marathon? Humans are running machines! So be careful with your dogs!
Check out Iron Doggy™ (irondoggy.com) since they created the original hands-free leash for running, hiking, or walking your dog. They really do have an awesome, quality product!:)
Great video! My dog is a golden retriever and border collie mix and he loves to run. I started him out on short runs when he was 6 mos old, now we do 3 or 4 runs per week, always the same 5 mile loop. He’s 2 years old now and it’s not uncommon for him to get 80 miles a month in, most of which is off leash. He was trained early so he sticks with me. If I want to run 10, I do two 5 mile loops and drop him at the house after the first loop. Great training partner. Like you, I make sure he’s hydrated and make smart decisions about heat, time of day, etc.; I checked with the Vet, she said he’s a total beast and that he is healthy as a horse. I check his paws daily, no issues. I take his safety as a top priority!
I can’t keep up with my red heeler! Louie is such a baby he is ready to go!
This such a great video. It made me smile just watching Nora have fun! Making sure our dogs get enough exercise is a great reason to teach them to run with us! I know of a few dog advocacy sites that would love to see this, so I’m going to share this!
the problem is that my dog sniffs every fucking corner, so you have to stop every 20 seconds
For off leash running i would always recommend an e collar because at some point while running your dog off leash he/she will run after whatever and if she/he doesn’t listen it may cause serious harm just a alittle recommendation for you
Thanks Coach Nate and Coach Nora for the vid:D I’ve been running a few years with my dog and the furthest I went with him is 12km. At the moment we are running together three times a week, twice on leash and once off leash on the trails. Think we can try to go for a 16km and slowly build up from there… Just have a question, if you run with Nora where there is not a lot of puddles or a stream how often do you give her water on you longer runs?
I like taking my dog mountain biking and running, but she tends to jump on me when we go running
My dog is a German Sheppard and runs great only problem is the dogs in the street always fight and causing problems for me how can I stop this I love running with her
What if I have a dog with tiny legs? I have a mini dachshund pug mix. Is he too small to run with?
My 8 year male dalmatian Denzil likes to hump blonde dogs male or female he’s not bothered, he’s a great partner but both of mine like to stay within sight in our country parks but are on lead on roads, great channel btw
era mostaza lo que estaba a la orilla del trail o es solomi imaginacion?
I’m getting a blue heeler soon, She is 8 do u still think she will be active!????
here’s another option that is more controlled and practicaland a sport of its ownits dog mushing for everyone, anywhere, anytime http://www.dogpoweredscooter.com
Can’t wait to teach my Siberian Husky, he’s probably gonna pull me like a sled tho
I love how my dog looks at my side while running. She knows she can run faster than me, but gives me her respect by not outrunning me by keeping pace with me.
I wouldn’t recommend a harness for a working dog they just want to pull you. Start with A Gentle Leader if you don’t want to use a pinch collar.
What age should I start running with my cattle dog? Also when I walk with my pup she is constantly nipping ankles which I feel I could trip over her. Do they stop nipping at some point?
I run canicross with my Pointers..similar but different aha
If you run into a bear, Louis will give his life to save yours. Best breed ever.
Nice Vid:D Do dogs get any problems by drinking water in the middle (like making a pause) of a running?:)
Where in upstate was this?? I’m just south of Rochester in the Finger Lakes. So gorgeous here!
“Bulldogs cant run”? LOL. That is the type of shit that cracks me up, my Old English bulldogge can run 30 miles without breaking a sweat.
Loving this series of videos:D liking the humour & content. Kudos to the director & editor.
I have a three year old ACD blue heeler female Jolene! We do a lot of hiking and we are in Northern New Jersey.
Know your dog.YES! If he does anything out of the ordinary I stop to check him out.
Coach Nora i run with my springer spaniel so this was great to watch, thank you
Liz, my blue heeler is named Juneybug. She is 12 years old now and doesn’t run much anymore but in her younger years I use to run about 25 miles a week with her..Seems like it took the miles to keep her calm. She has and is a great dog.. I also enjoy your videos with you, Lou and hubby…keep up the good work..
Try to do a search on: Ben Robinson dog. Ben is a fast runner, he can do a 5 km parkrun in just under 15 minutes. But with the help of his dog he is able to do it in 12:30 minutes! Now that is fast if you ask me!
Don’t like that waist leash. Just use a midsize leash with a loop handle. When at a decent pace, place your arm inside the loop around your elbow area and run without any tension. Your dog and you will love the feeling of running without any tension.
This video is absurdly well directed. holy shit, i’m impressed. AWESOME from start to finish…
I know this is an older video, but I love this. We just got a puppy (5 months old), and he’s definitely a running dog! I want to make sure we aren’t blowing him out. Luckily for him, I average about a 12 minute training pace, so it’s a nice easy trot for Mikko the Wonder Dog! Thanks again!
“I recommend this guide:
pime.best/btfd-guide/HIJ
So grateful it exists in 2020.”
I’m glad I checked this video, I was planning to take my dog on my 30 minute 3 Mile runs straight out of the blue without that walking training.
Liz my dog is named Sandy and she’s a red healer cross and I am teaching her to be a cattle dog and I personally have never had a cattle before and I AM training her my self so this is going to be interesting hahahaha but I am learning a lot from you
When I try running next to my puppy he starts biting me and will not stop…
Awesome vid! I just started running a few weeks ago, and I’m excited to start bringing my pooches. Right now it’s too cold in ND to do much outside. Thanks for the tips!
My son has a Red Heeler 7 mo. Girl. These videos have helped me allot. He visits with her occasionally week ends, I’m a small Home Pet groomer. He has a nice one. Wow doesn’t run away out side, like my bigMaltese, and Rat Terrier!
Some breeds are designed to be sprinters while others are distance runners. My Dachshunds and Bassets are surprisingly fast over short distances but my Labrador can run for miles and miles.
We have a spaniel who likes running. But what distances are good and what is too much? Thx for any input
My English springer spaniel pulls like a train. He either stops or he’s flat out no in between. I’ll give this a try
Run with my Boxwe Rottweilers. Trained up to 4 miles then she was pooped. She is limping now so we need to get surgery. Miss her on runs now…such a beautiful location
What i missed is adjusting the pace to your dogs pace. Although my dog also does the snif & sprint thing, i adjust the pace so he’s trotting if he follows my pace.
The other point that’s imporant, you also mentioned, pay close attention to your dogs steps during the run. If there is any sign of limping or discomfort, the run is over.
Buck lays in the mud as well and when we are fishing, he puts his front paws in the water and butt on bank lol, usually in the mud… does Lou blow bubbles? Buck does, Zoe doesn’t….yet lol.
You should get Louie a backpack to carry his own water and food and a GoPro to see his view of the world.
Liz, i been enjoying your videos since the day I came home with my new cattle dog (blue healer) He is a splitin image of Lou. I have the same leash and everything you say I did or tried and it all is good. I do no go hiking but I have 6 acres and he loves to run. Harley is fully potty trained and I have him doing some tricks already. He’s about 5 months old. He’s turning into more like a service dog for me because I am a diabetic. He knows when something is wrong and the best of all he is very loyle. Keep up the good work.
I took my blue pup out to see my buddy for his bday at the graveyard. He was running around taking the flowers out of the graves lmao. So disrespectful
piglet. my cow dog literally looked like a pig when she was a baby
Awesome. Dogs are great to run with. When the temp is cool my lab mix can run as far and fast as I can, but in the heat I just take him for a warmup or cool down.
Dogs are also excellent for taking on hikes up steep places. The good Lord designed them for things like that
I don’t understand why you would put a harness with a collar
Me and my dog have been running for a while now, we’re both losing weight and improving ourselfs!
Why you allowed your dog to use water fountain that is used by human specially by kids also?
My dog wants to stop and sniff every 30 ft, what can I do,??
Louie barking lets go stop with the video! ACD can run for hours in the heat or cold if they are conditioned to much more than humans…that’s what they were bred for
my dog starts throwing tantrums when i try to run with him he lays down and doesnt want to go
Awesome vid. I am a dog trainer and behaviourist and get a smile on my face when people use common sence around their dog. One tip: maybe a harnass will give her a less uncomfortable feeling when you have to shorten your leash. It’s also less straining on her neck and it gives you more control in situations where you might need it. Other than that: happy tails on happy trails!
Heck yeah I love taking my dog on trail runs like this she has so much fun!
Wicked video! But just a doggy safety tip! The front clip harness you’re using in the video restricts the dogs shoulder movements! It can actually wind up doing a lot of damage with continued use
Nora and you make a great team! Please consider a Canicross harness for Nora to go with the bungee line. It means that when she pulls her windpipe isn’t crushed and she can breath easy. It also puts her at less risk of injury if one of you have to stop suddenly, or trip. Happy trails!
I’m going to get a majority wolf and hopes to run a lot with him.
We use the same hydration pack! I actually managed to squish a second two liter bladder inside so I’m able to carry 4L. Also if you’re interested I taught my dog to drink from the boarded tube without putting his mouth on it but squeezing the mouth piece and hanging it over his head. Definitely leads to quicker waters breaks!
My dog and I love to hike but recently were getting into mountain biking. He likes to run of leash besides me!
Please put your dog on your Leash. you don’t know if there are other dogs who not friendly and you might get into trouble with your dog or that other dog. not all dogs reacte to other dogs well and it’s people like you having your dogs off leashes causing problems
I use a cooling vest for my Heeler Fozzie when the temps are above 60*F and we trail running and hiking. If he doesn’t wear it he overheats on a 3 mile run, with it on we have done runs of 10 miles and he does great
I run with a 4yo Border Collie. The only thing that stops him is heat. We ran 21km of trails today. Running on road has proven more problematic over the years but we have reached a point where the only thing that phases him is trucks. We live rurally though and the roads we run are very quiet.
Far better to have the dog in a harness, so if they do pull they don’t do themselves a neck injury.
I have a Jack Russell Terrier and he is so crazy and playful:)) He has a very strong personality and it’s so hard for my to train him…But we will definitely try this types of running
Invest in dog training off leash by a dog trainer. Well worth the investment. No regrets.
This is great! As a running coach, you have tremendous insight on dogs and your advice is golden. Nora is so lucky to have you as her human companion.!
I have four Queensland dogs the oldest looks exactly like your dog:) good vibes!
Just started running and have been bringing my dobe along. He loves it!
Sucks because in Fl theres rarely a time when the weather isn’t above 70 unless its in the wee morning hours and still dark:(
Just love Lou…. how can you know love a Heeler? Gus is my best bud and the light of my life… Gus is a “Trail Dog” we hike and backpack. This year we will be hiking the “K” section of the PCT from Rainy Pass to Stevens Pass 10 day 127 miles… We also hike many day hikes.
Parks and boulevards are closed at this time. Dogs don’t understand this and they need to run out. So we decided to go jogging in a beautiful forest on a sunny day.
hey liz! im about to be a heeler mom, and i was wondering, what are some tips for bringing your puppy home?
Just looking for tips with running with my husky. he totally gave up on me today on this heated day after 2 miles ( We been running 6 miles). He just stop and just turn to the way to our home. At first i always took water so he can run, but he was always so exited that didn’t wanted any water so i stopped taking the water. I definitely taking water tomorrow and having a break
