I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and tips and tricks. Anything to help the average person help themselves at home. Fantastic! Thanks!
Hello! Does the amount of salt have to do with the ice pack staying cold for a longer time? Mine doesn’t seem to stay cold for more than 2 hours.
WARNING!! The rubbing alcohol and water ice packs get VERY cold! Always use a towel as you can give yourself frostbite from it being so cold.
Sounds like a good way to get a freezer burn. Salt ice can get way below freezing which can be dangerous for people that don’t have accurate nerve sensation. Like myself. A proper jell pack should melt and heat up before causing skin damage.
No, it’s her posture. She is sitting with her face closer to the camera to the phone than her body. Some people just naturally sit in a slumped position. She is still taking time to share her time and experience with us. Which I appreciate a lot. I am a person who uses ice packs a LOT!
Something I would recommend is that you practice sitting straighter in front of the mirroepr and speaking clearer because your words are just a little a bit mumbled at times. Just watch your videos back, Sis. But all around, I would have to say, GREAT JOB!
With the salt water solution, do you need to heat it together to get it to dissolve first, or do you just put it together cold?
my ice pack came out clumpy. the corn starch wouldn’t break up what did i do wrong?
Thank you so much. Knowing that I can make these with salt that I already have in my kitchen has been very helpful when I needed more ice packs to help with an injury..
Do it again. But I wanna see which one last the longest and is coldest
On all of your videos, there are voices in the background that I, the viewer, can hear. Distracting….
Thank you so much, trying to prepare for knee replacement surgery.
The ice cup and packs are also good for folks with chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). During an outbreak the skin becomes hot and itchy. Icing the hives dissipates that heat and relieves the itch.
What will adding alcohol do in combination to the corn starch?
My dad says that ice packs that are marked as non reusable actually are reusable and the manufacturers are trying to get you to buy more.
Thanks for the video! Would this formula be good to make in those wrap around the neck bandannas that are worn outside to cool you off in the summer?
Did this. Got some clumps, so probably put in too much starch but now I now. Still came out pretty good.
I’ve been wondering how to make those summer time neck coolers! I think this would do the trick nicely!
Perfect for cheap people like me to buy real ice packs for my lunch
I used this video to make one 3 yrs ago. Still use and appreciate the same ice pack for my knee. Amazing. Back here watching Im ready to make some new colors and give it to family members. THANKS FOR UPLOADING THIS!
How many times have to use?
How to make for face my face is fat
I had knee surgery (lateral meniscus tear and 2cm floating body) this past Friday, and have been using both the alcohol/water and salt water ice packs. They’re perfect! The only issue I have had is the weight of either of them on my knee since removing the bandages.
i know this video is from 4 years ago, but is there any chance that you know how to make a heat pad? I’ve tried the ones where you make a fabric case and put lentils or rice in it but it’s just not the right fit for me
I have made these in the past. My PT told me about them. I did PT in December and my insurance paid everything. Now it’s January and I need one more round of PT. Then I’m on my own. My doctor did say before I found out about the insurance I could do my PT at home. I have everything I need here. Even a hand pedal bike and the balls I need. The only machine I used at PT was peddling with my hands. I have back problems so almost everything is sitting up, laying down or standing. I have my rubber cord for my pull exercises. I’m set up for home and will save about a thousand dollars. I priced the ice packs for the back. Not cheap at all. Glad I found these guys.
what’s with your facial expressions? No hate!!! love your video!
This works so goodI tried it and it was so good, I appreciate it.
Can we have specific scale.. maybe mL or L. And not just “cup”
You didn’t mention “how long slush mixture will stay cold…..and how long do they normally last on storage or constant usage.
I am definitely gonna try this. I’ve had a pain in my knee that’s traveling up my leg for a few week. Doctor just said apply a cold pack to it.
Awesome, I wanted to make these but I wasn’t sure about the ratios. This is great, where I was doing therapy they wanted $20 for a medium pack. I bought one elsewhere for $8 and now making my own for pennies! You rock docs!
Why i’m seeing this? I’m in latino america we’re freezing right now ;-;
Hard corn works better than rice. Rice deteriorates into crumbles that don’t hold the heat or cold as long.
This is the only way to make a homemade ice pack! The pack stays cold for a long time! I use mine for back pain/inflammation. The gel consistency allows for all surface areas to be touched, and provides comfort. Thanks for the recipe!
Corn syrup probably best if it’s expired gives you something to do with expired corn syrup other than throwing it away
Per doctor’s instructions, I’ll be using ice after hand surgery. Thanks for the ideas and ratios for making ice bags at home!
Yay i thought this method was the worst because it’s the simplest XD but it’s super awesome
Can i get a shoutout I’ve been watching every one of your videos
How do you turn off the annoying music so you can be heard and understood better.
This is so handy cuz I sprained my ankle and I couldn’t walk on it for he past two days
I still went to school though hahahahaha
Holy crap! I need this so bad!! I get headaches constantly. Thanks for the info. Wish I could make one now. I’m heading straight for the store in the morning!! Get me some rubbing alcohol.
Good morning! Great tips guys! Whenever I use the frozen ice in a styrofoam cup, I always rub a bit of coconut oil on the area I’ll be icing, first. Then I get a plastic bag of any type (I recycle the plastic grocery bags ) and put the cup inside with the bag tight against the bare ice.
This way, it will collect the resulting melted water and will slide easily over the area your treating! If I have a microfiber cloth handy, I’ll wrap that around the cup BEFORE I put it in the bag. These absorb water REALLY well and are not too bulky.
I have been using this recipe for years and can tell you that it is the BEST!
I tried this yesterday not bad better than the water alcohol idea brought the swelling down since I didn’t freeze it long it didn’t last longer than about two hours I would suggest dissolving the corn starch first before adding the salt and keep the water boiling
Good to know when you need a large ice pack in the middle of the night when all the stores are closed or too far away! Thanks for the vid (:
Try soaking a large microfiber towel with water, put into a large gallon plastic ziplock bag, zip it shut and lay it flat in freezer, you can even fold it if you don’t have room to lay it flat. Then you can refreeze it over and over again
Hello LesFam, Lately Gel Pillows are popping up in the Department Stores. I’ve searched, but haven’t been able to find out what the Gel is made of? Do you think that your receipt would remain stable if it wasn’t refrigerated? As far as bacteria possibly growing due to cornstarch/food stuff, I thought that I would add Colloidal Silver to the water. Colloidal Silver stops bacteria.
I made my own C.S. Generator years ago and never regretted it.
I thought that I could try to make a pillow with 20 mil vinyl. That is what the good quality waterbeds are made from. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so very much!!!!
Just tried this and was very happy with the results, felt wonderful on my lower back soft and relaxing experience with this recipe tried all the others and this one worked better for me.
Great video. What are other good substitutes for rubbing alcohol?
I just made it with 4 cups water.. Still has a nice consistency… just waiting for it to cool down to freeze in the bag.. Need it for my daughter who has been seeing a therapist for lower back problems… He suggested to put an ice pack twice a day in that area… THANK YOU for this idea!
I wouldn’t think the PVC pipe would conduct the cold outwardly very well
Hey I have a question! My meniscus failed I think and my knee was stuck bent, and I was in the hospital for over 7 hours, then they pulled my leg then there was a pop what does that means please help me I’m very scared to move my knee now!
I got excited for the gel pack but where the hell do you buy rubbing alcohol?
If you use less dish soap, it will stay liquidy, like the corn syrup.
I just made one for my daughter who is sick today at home with a fever. This ice pack is amazing! Thank you for sharing the recipe with us.
You, gentlemen, are awesome! Thank you for all the helpful tips and tricks. You have made my life much less painful. Many, many thanks!
I just recently had surgery on my shoulder and I made 4 ice packs with this recipe ahead of time (I multiplied the recipe by 5 and it made 4-gallon size baggie ice packs) and omg they are GREAT!!!!! I’m so glad I came across your video! Thank you so much for sharing!:) Hehe, I used purple food coloring because it’s my favorite color.
Bob & Brad,…. the 2 most famous physical therapists I know! Love your channel! ;-))
Hi guys, I have been using a variety your suggestions (exercises) and am happy to report that my shoulder is much better. There is one exercise that I really have gotten a lot out of is the one you use a band and put a small pillow under your armpit… Thank you!
Hi I m Yasmin age 48 I have lower back pain plz recommend some advice to relieve back pain
Can you heat these also? I’m looking to make some hot and cold packs for inside my knee brace, neo g make hot and cold discs but are so expensive, I will make a huge batch of this for my horses and cooling dog beds for the summer
I just had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday and yes I need this
Is it colder than ice? If so how long does it stay that way? Need it for Migraine
why wouldnt you mention that corn starch needs to be added to cold water……………………………… what a waste
thank you so much! I’m making a couple of these to put in my daughters stroller to keep her cool while out running errands. I’m gonna make the pouch with insulation to help keep it cooler longer. plus with making my own gel, I can customize the size and shape of the pack to fit the stroller so it won’t be too bulky or bunch up!
Thank you very much i really need it right now.great video.
great video! keep up the good work! i know you’ll be successful.
Question: You said it stays cold for 8-12 hours. Can i put it in the Fridge and REUSE days after?
I got a better idea get a plastic bag the little ones then get some ice cubes not that much and then put the ice cubes in the bag and zip it up then grab a paper towel wrap the paper towel around the bag
Why do they remind me of Sam and Dean from Supernatural. Lmfao.
great video store packs are always to small and poor quality
Thank you for this great share! What’s the longest it stays cold for?
Very useful and easy to make. Thank you so much for sharing. Its so amazing.
There is no need for waterproof PVC glue! You glue it and let it dry. Unless the glue will be exposed to water during the drying process it is unnecessary. I have eight years piping in pool pumps and I have never used waterproof PVC glue.
If you want to use a more durable bag then checkout the rezip bags
Ok, so I actually made this recipe and the one using isopropyl alcohol. the one w/ alcohol gets much much colder almost too cold and lasts longer, but is not conforming like a gel. And will be better for sprains and so forth. while this is a gel and is nice bc it doesn’t get to cold. but unfortunately it doesn’t last for too long either. about 1/2 hr 45 min. in fact these are going to be perfect for this summer when I’m out working in my shop and I just need to cool off by putting something on my neck. They have been perfect for what I needed now for relief from a skin irritation caused by an allergic reaction. Thanks for the help.
What about just putting ice cubes in one of those bags, why don’t they mention that?
Option 1) 4:1water to rubbing alcohol; Option 2) 12:1water to salt (both double freezer bagged)….watch the video for the bonus info
i made it for my sprained ankle but i used different ingredients on march 24
Did anyone else notice that she only cleaned one burner the one she was using I love that. That is something my mom would do
OK> Loved your ide. but as a man I got totally put off by your poorly maintained nails.
InnerTube is brutal..but that wasn’t quite right.
Caro syrup double bagged and frozen is an awesome cold pack too.
I want to make it without using fire and rubbing alcohol…… ANY IDEAS GUYS???????
I know this is a silly question but does the corn starch degrade in any way? Turn moldy? Or something?
Which pack is best for knee swelling
Hot pack or cold pack??
I like the rice bags, because I can sleep on them and not worry about over iced/freezing skin.
What temperature does the salt and water get as an estimate? I was wondering if this could work for like fat freezing. Hope someone can reply XD
Before this channel gets “popular” I was here before 40 comment, wait is this supposed to be a special moment,ah whatever
I do have a question, I have forward neck and a little bit rounded shoulders, also I have tingling in hands and pain radiation through my arm, while doing corrective exercises for my poor posture is it normal that it recreate the symtomes? Does it reduce overtime?
Are you using 70% rubbing alcohol? I have 91% rubbing alcohol. Do I need to change the water to alcohol ratio? Thanks!
Heat water 3 cupsbring to boil Half cup of salt -stir until it desloves3 quarters of a cup of 100% pure corn starch. Corn starch is a thickening Agent to make mixture jelly2 drops of coloring (You can skip this )
Comes to a boil as it thickens looking like blancmague/ pudding.
Let it cool…Apply into sandwich bag (double bag for safety & seal.
I made it this morning and now my husband is using it on his arm. He is veeeery happy and me too! Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless you and give you health, and love forever
Urgh! Styrofoam is terrible stuff. Please don’t recommend using it in such a wasteful way. You have lots of great tips in your videos but let’s be a little kinder to the only planet we’ve got.
wow..awesome tips!!! thank you for the motivational quotes in your videos..they help so much!
Thank you so much for this! My daughter struggles with chronic, continual back pain and I needed a cold pack solution for her. So I made the cover from fleece (really comfy) and tripled the ingredients you used here for a 12″ x 18″ pad. I had a huge pot of goo but it worked perfectly! I ended up using an entire box of cornstarch, and although I knew to mix it with water for a slurry, it would have been better to do that a little at a time rather than dumping the whole box into a bowl and then dumping in the water. You have the same problem you get when you add cornstarch directly to your mixture making the slurry in smaller increments would have worked far better.
I also used one of those large zipper-top bags you can get at Dollar Tree. I sealed up the edges with duct tape to reinforce them and prevent leaks, and bam I have a wonderful cold pack. I couldn’t be more thankful!
p.s. I made the gel purple because it’s her favorite color
Going to make a few of these and test them out in my cooler ca gallon bags of ice. Thinking one bag of ice to one or two of these
Double seal both ends of the food saver bags works too. And forever without leaks.
Who here watches Buzzfeed Nifty but never actually does to DIYs???
You’re amazing!! Thank you so much for this, you’re a blessing to me from above ❤️
Bob’s totally cracking out on the ‘blue’ homemade ice bags lol!
If it explodes, I will be getting that alcohol in my eyes, skin, or mouth. So I prefer water+salt method. Because I don’t want to risk it.
Bob is funny:D Love the Breaking Bad references haha. #blueisthegoodstuff #ricinispoison
Let’s talk about the alcohol to water ratio you gave… if that was based on using 50% alcohol as you used, then the ration will have to be recalculated if using 70% or 90% alcohol, correct?
“This is a sock and I poured rice in it.” “Ricin?!” Haha you guys are the best. Thank you for the info.
I love this I dont just use it for an ice pack I use it for a sensory toy for me because I love the feel of it when frozen
Hey Bob and Brad! First off I’m a first time watcher and I love you guys. A new subscriber for sure!
In Australia a factory made gel ice pack, W:12 H:430 L:250, costs $4.00 cheaper than the double zips bags and the rubbing alcohol.
My Physical therapist uses these, it’s the Perfect Ice pack cuz it shapes itself to your knee or whereever… Love it
Why do some people use alcohol instead of salt and what is the difference if any???
Some people do not even use cornstarch, what does that mean???
I watched your video on sleep positions and wanted to ask your opinion on mattress types. What’s your opinion on memory foam. There’s more variety out now that have quicker response times. They feel good on hip and shoulder pressure points but are they good in the long run?
Heads up! Your music is in front of your speech & is competing & winning, the filler music should be behind & lower, we should not have to strain to hear you, video 101, editing is key…Shalom!
Bag of peas from freezer is good too. Bang it on counter to separate lumps. But I like the two recipes and will use them.
I wonder if you could use a vacuum sealer to pull out the air and seal it instead of using ziplocs:D
Even though the video shows the ice pack being put directly on the arm and the demonstrator says can be directly applied to neck, do Not put it directly on skin! I got a very nasty 2nd degree blistering ice burn. Dangerously misleading!
I just finished a batch of this it looks like it will turn out better then the alcohol water mixture we’ll see
Crest white strips……you will looove the difference on your teeth..best investment I made. Plz try
Made four of these with cozies before hip replacement. Bought a freezer pack that you use in your cooler for picnics at dollar store. Froze all items and then at night took towel and sandwiched freezer pack between 2 gel packs.
Used the other two gel packs on hip. When gels got warm just switched them out with the two in the towel.Gel packs lasted about 4 hours. Had ice packs all night without needing to get out of bed. Best gel packs ever.
this is great. I can use it for my mom’s back and knee pains, thanks for this.
I just saw this video. I want to know if we keep it in the Freezer before we use this. And I have a another Question. There was a ice pack which becomes cold when we crush or shake it, I want to know if this is the same as that.? If not Do you know how to prepare it…? Please give your answer. Thanks
Please shut your door or tell the ppl in the background to HUSH
L❤VE THE COLD PACK RECIPE!
how about using some cognac or any other drinking alcoholic beverage?
Too much work and labor extensive. All you need is a Baby Diaper and Zip Lock Bag…. Best of all, under 2 minutes! I have a Video in my Channel showing you how! Check it out!
Thank you buzz-feed do doing all the work so I don’t have to.
I like this better than another video I just watched. I have jaw issues and I’m supposed to use ice on it, but the thought of using regular ice (which is hard) doesn’t sound comfortable so I’ve opted out of not icing my jaw. The recipe in this video looks so comfortable that I can’t wait to try it!
Thank you.
I’m getting my wisdom teeth removed in 2 hours and just started panicking because I realized that I went to the store, and I forgot the ice packs .
Hi there, why is the salt optional? what is its actual role in the recipe?
You guys treat us like 2 year olds and ramble way to much. Get to the freaking point.
Bob and Brad, thanks men! I am about to have a TKR it is set for Nov 8 2018. So I am researching and you are helping. Guys, can you combine chemicals? Like, flood rice with water and alcohol blend? Or mix water and alcohol and salt? What do you think?
Can this be put inside emptied water or Gatoraid bottles, frozen and added to coolers?
Frozen peas for me! Wonderful!!!! Water never freezes the ocean hahaha
Thank you for making this video! I had a biopsy a few days ago and the swelling is awful
It’s been over a month since I tried this recipe and have cycled the bag through freezing and room temperature at least ten times. The gel seems to have lost some of its viscosity although there doesn’t seem to be bacterial or mold growth.
I’ve played with the recipe and translated the volume measurements into baker’s percentage (with water as reference) and this is what I’ve come up with thus far:
water 100%
salt 15 to 20%
starch 10 to 15%
Starch at 15% makes an extremely stiff, viscous gel that’s difficult to stir when cooking (although various kinds of starches may give differing results). Increasing the salt content will proportionally lower the freezing temperature. With salt at 18% the icepack remained pliable at minus 10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) and wasn’t at all rock solid at minus 20 C (minus 4 F).
Great tips! I knew about the rubbing alcohol mixture and plain rice, but being able to use salt, is AWESOME!!!
This would work since it would bend where my body bends and curves. I would appreciate it if the music was softer than the human’s voice, since the loudness makes it hard to hear the details without straining.
I’ve been doing this for years, need to change the bag every few times as the plastic weakens = leakage.
Just to add… I use heavy duty plastic freezer bags (usually Ziplock), in the gallon size and the smaller (pint?) size and I also double bag them. Make one, let out the air, zip it tight, put the zipped end into the bottom of a second bag (you’ll probably have to bend the zipped part over) and then freeze. I also use a light kitchen towel or thin cloth (pillowcase?) over the bag so it’s not directly in contact with the skin. It also helps absorb condensation.
Just when I needed this! I have to deliver some greek cheese home. Can these last for about 8 hours?
Don’t you just hate when regular ice packs make your raw produce in your cooler soggy?
Rubbing alcohol and water are flexible ice Pac. I use this one because I’m kind sorta a little bit lit clumsy.
sees video
Me: or you could just put ice in a bag.
dabs then realizes that dabs aren’t a thing anymore
Excellent! Thank guys! Now I must look up Breaking Bad so I can learn about more great stuff to make!!
Find the difference (If you hate these types of comments then scroll down)

You can find food coloring in the cake mix section of your grocery store. That is what is used to add color to cake frosting. It comes in tiny little plastic squeeze bottles. And while you are there buy some frosting mix and make some cake frosting and eat it straight from the bowl! It is SO decadent! Don’t forget to add color first though!
I want to eat it!!is that weird…(also great method I love it.works very well)
For coloring can you use some color kool-aide powder added? Also how about adding in some Jello?
Does this work in coolers to keep your liquids cold, ie water or sodas???
Where the f was my brain 10 years ago when i needed this after my knee surgery? Sad part is that i knew all this components but didn’t connect them at all. And i studied this kind of stuff.
this is one of the more useful videos I’ve seen in a month on this channel
I put mine in a food saver bag for more durability and easier sealing. Thank you so much for the recipe.
I have a few that l made from vodka and water. Works really well.
I believe that your getting the down thumbs due to the small space that you have and this puts you right in my face.
I actually really liked the comparisons but I had to wrestle with my hand to keep it away from clicking the exit. Very good work, but the presentation………..
Thank you for pointing out to put Ziploc bag in a bowl.I wouldn’t have thought of that and I’m sure I would have made a big. Thank you for your video.
We usually freeze a reused water bottle full of water and put it in our bunnys’ cages for them to lay against or lick.
Thanks guys. I just stopped the arthritis pain in my hand with your cup idea and the pain was gone in less than 2 minutes. Ice is awesome!
I am literally going camping today and wished this video came out yesterday when I needed it.
Is this ice pack useful for mobile
Because my mobile gets very heat up
Does anybody know if I can make it with sea salt? And if I do, how much sea salt do I need?
Hi if you see this message I hope all of you are happy today
In my house anything incased in plastic and in the freezer for more than 24 hours counts as a diy ice pack
I just made this a couple of hours ago to use inside my pillow, since it’s too hot in the summer, and the heat bothers my sleep.
I just put it in the freezer, will leave overnight for the first time and see what happens, when you guys are making mix the corn startch very well in the beginning leave it unstirred for a couple minutes until it thickens and then resume stirring on a strong flame. but start with a mild flame when putting in the salt and the cornstartch.
Thanks!i needed these to keep my lunch cool it was helpful!;)
Can this be put in the microwave to use as a hot pack or it’s just good for cool pack use only? Thank you.
I made the thermocol cup one today, but as soon as I held it ice face down, all ice came crashing down on me I think it needed to be freezed more? I kept for like 3 hours
Just want to say thank you for this ice pack recipe I had surgery on a rotator cuff December 10th that just passed and the ice packs that the hospital gave me sucks but the recipe I made four or five and we interchange those they are awesome completely awesome so again thank you you are awesome
Informative and fun! On my next ice pack I plan to try salt water. Thanks for the ratio one half cup salt with six cups of water.
darlin, before making a video like this, OMG do a little research Please!!!! For the price of the the dish soap and corn syrup ones I could have bought minally 2 each if not 3 of the same size. the reason your salt & water and the rubbing alcohol & water ones didn’t meet expectations were bc you didn’t use the right ratios in either case. the salt one is a 12:1 ratio (12 cups water to 1 cup salt) the alcohol ratio is 4:1 4 cups water to 1 cup alcohol ). Btw these last 2 are meant to be a pliable ice pack. the ice/alcohol keeps the water from freezing completely giving it the slushiness. however they do get colder and last longer than most helpful packs which is perfect for injuries. I personally like them for my cooler for those exact same reasons. they confirm sand are colder and last longer, I don’t like large blocks of ice, taking up room
LOL, “the blue is the good stuff” Breaking Bad was so good. Let’s Cook… love you guys. I’m gonna try this recipe.
Awesome guys….great ideas…and love your humor and how you bounce off of each other
Love your videos!!!! Thank You!!
Nana from Nova Scotia
Vince!! Can you do an error tutorial on windmills? I can easily do one windmill but i can’t seem to get into a second one without my feet hitting the ground for the ilfe of me.
thank you so much for the useful information, i’m your big fan:x
Mitchell what’s the name of the music that you used from when you were showing us the wax going into the apples from the video you may not ever eat an apple again?
the second one is really worth trying. it was a really good idea…..
Didnt get it. With alcohol ice less hard it seems but good maybe for bumps on head or tooth surgery.
