The Moon Salute, which can be done at any time of day, at the end of your yoga practice or when you simply want to quiet your mind.Chandra Namaskara (moon salutation) is similar to that of Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) in the sense it is a great way to begin a yoga practice with gentle movement.

The sequence of asanas is the same as Surya Namaskar except that Ardha Chandrasana, the half moon pose is performed after Ashwa Sanchalanasana. Whereas the twelve positions of Suya Namaskar relate to the 12 zodiac or solar phases of the year, the fourteen positions of Chandra Namaskar relate to the fourteen.
But on days when you’re feeling depleted, overstimulated, or overheated, it’s good to know that Surya Namaskar has a soothing sister sequence known as Chandra Namaskar, or Moon Salutation. As the name suggests, Chandra Namaskar is a quieting sequence that invites you to bow to and cultivate the moon’s soothing lunar energy. We can invoke and pay homage to the lunar energy in nature and within by practicing chandra namaskara, or moon salutation. The 15 steps in the sequence below represent 15 tithis, or lunar days; a 16th step honors the tantric goddess Shodashi, who presides over all the phases of the moon, as well as all that is perfect, complete, and beautiful.

Dear Esther. I follow your meditation sessions for the past week thanks to Jerome Bel councils. I would like to thank you deeply for the deep moments you offer and the great feeling to share those emotions with many people around the world. thank you so much
Fantastic, I love this!! I can’t do the low side lunges so I stay in goddess position during those.
Wow.. so soothing.. thanks for the step by step slow guidance♥️♥️ I follow this everyday.. by the end, I feel so calm..♥️♥️
me fascina esta mina,es super femenina, suave y sutil con los ejercicios, ademasde muy bella, excelente trabajo.
Dear Erin,
I hope you are well in these troubling times. My request for the day is to have a seven or eleven rounds ( that’s 22 I get it:)) of moon salutations for a longer flow.
Take care and God bless
Awesome… I was depressed when I began with workout, but now it´s much better. Thanks a lot Esther:)
I did this after a day which made me feel like not leaving my bed. And now I am in a transcendental state. This class was magical. I also did the low back stress release after this one, and the breathing exercise in that is something else. Thank you, Erin. You are a Goddess.
Hi asther.u r my first yoga teacher.i m following u since 2009.thanx for ur excellent yoga videos,I ve learnt from u a lot over the years
I am decomposing Moon Salutation and I find this version quite suitable for beginners. Thank you for sharing, the explanations are precise and simple. Is one of the bests I’ve seen on You Tube.
Thank you so much for this. It is easy to follow for a beginner, but not to slow or simple
I didnt knew moon salutation can be so cooling compere to sun salutation i do them both now, this video best i found thank you
The most wonderful yoga sequence! Thank you very much for this beautiful video!
I don’t know how I hadn’t found this beautiful evening class before. It was just what I needed on the first night of the new semester, after a long day. Thank you, as always, Erin! Reminds me of evening class in Nosara.:)
what purpose does it have to stretch with the front leg slightly bend? maybe ego does not allow bending less rather than being truthfull and finding the right starting point to stretch. Asanas are not meant to be visually nice, but inwardly truthfull if yamas and niyamas are followed and if self realization is desired
This is the end of my first week of sun salutations in the morning and moon salutations (this video) in the evening. It’s been a very grounding experience and its helping me to be more accountable each day as I’m setting intentions in the morning and reviewing in the evening. Tonight though, something just clicked during the moon salutation. Everything just flowed. I am so grateful to you for sharing this. Loving the absolute contentment I’m feeling right now. Namaste
Hope you can do a longer moon salutation flow! It’s so good when you have your period❤️
Learning this for stress and to loosen my hamstrings and hipflexors from running. Lovely and helpful for a beginner like me!
Thank you, for your beautiful explanation. What an amazing room!
I’ve been watching several Moon videos, this is the nicest, most complete, perfectly paced of the bunch, Thank you for Posting it.
I like your class.your voice, yoyr teach, the landscape.thank you very much.y will learn from you this chandra Namaskar!
Love from Buenos Aires!
I’m so glad i found this. I learned the moon salutation a month ago at my yoga class but was foggy about some of the poses. This is the only version of the moon salutation that is the same as what my class taught. I like the way she teaches, she doesn’t go so fast that you can’t follow the moves.
Hi can you practice Sun salutation and moon salutation together?
Thanks a great evening practise to stretch and relax before sleep x
Yoga was originally created by men for men. But in the West for some reason it has morphed into a women’s only practice. Both is bad, because men and women equally do benefit from practicing Yoga.
Knee extending over your ankle will result in knee injuries when you are in chandra namaskar
Hello, have you heard about Lean Body Maximizer? (look it up on google) You will discover the serious crimes we commit against our bodies. With “Lean Body Maximizer”, you will discover how to lose weight fast.
My moon salutations is slightly differ (except Malasana is not there) rest of postures are similar
Yoga was created by men:) It is suitable for men, women, and children of all ages.
i love all of your videos! thank you for sharing your experience with us!
good explanation, thank you so much…and nice tempo as well.
Beautiful sequence. Are you a Kripalu Yoga teacher? How did you find this?
hello esther. I am from the Philippines and how I greatly admire you. namaste beautiful soul.
Thank you, the best on youtube, especially for beginners, not too fast, not too taxing for stiffer or achier joints, clearly explains breath with each movement (so important and almost all others skip it half the time during the sequence), you can hear the voice well, & your diction is good too thumbs up! ❤️
Hi, can anyone tell me what is the name of that pose in 4:00? Are the palms supposed to face the head (ears) or towards the front? Thanks.:)
Hi.
I have (had) the same problems. To make your learning curve more humane, you can always stay in each pose for a number of breaths. This allows you time to remember what to comes. With practise, you should be able to ‘dance’ the salution.
Bye
Thank you for that beautiful moment of peace and inner calm. It is a powerful sequence that is worth knowing just as much as its solar counterpart imho… Namaste
very very good very clear explanation and teaching! Thank you for this professional video!
I love this sequence!! Wonder why i havent seen this until now. You are such a genius i love the music and background, your tone and overall. Moody and beautiful and real ‘moony’ to describe (just made up the word, i’m not a native speaker and from Korea hehe) Even if i totally master this sequence myself later, I’d still like to yoga after this one because of the atmosphere of this clip.Different from suriyanamaskara, this chandra one is very relaxing yet effective, and purifying, like all my mental toxins are detoxified. Thanks for a wonderful sequence!
wow..this leaves me feeling so different from the sun salutation sequence. Thanx 4 sharing this. It’s a great way to end the day!
Hello Erin,it is one of my favorite practices. Thank you from Spain
Hi Aditya….really liked the way you explained….specially the breathing part…when to inhale when to exhale…..
Please upload some zumba and aerobics vdo too for practice…will be really grateful.
Thanks
What a beautiful, peaceful full moon flow, on this last fall moon of the year. Namaste
The balance and symmetry of this sequence is beautiful. Thank you.
thank you you are a really good teacher, you are smart and pretty;
I’ve been studying up on my moon salutations, this was great, many thanks!
So after searching & searching through many YouTube video’s. I must say yours is the absolute BEST! The length, your not to fast nor slow just perfect. Thank you!
H ilonai, that was nice flow of sun salutation, I was viewing your video for moon salutation.
When doing anjani asan the knee should be 90 degree aligned with shoulder straight but I can see twice the knee was at 100 degree
Is this variation expected for chandra namaskara
This is the best routine on youtube. Short and quick. Helps to keep the breathing in coordination with the poses easily.
This left me feeling very relaxed, thank you so much for sharing:)
Namaskara! Thank you for this excellent instruction in CHANDRA Namaskar!
Will have to try this sequence at sunset….
perhaps at our next candlelight practise…
Ive seen many moon salutations and by far this is the best. You don’t speak much which makes me focus more. Also, your paste is perfect. Thanks a lot, i’ll be doing it every night before going to bed.
Love it! Saves me every time I feel stressed, angry and out of balance (which is almost every day after work!) Beautiful moving meditation, that gives a sense of balance and harmony! Thank you very very much! This is by far my favourite practice!
this is sun salutation, not moon, as I’ve learnt as a yoga teacher. pls correct the description, though explained very well.
Amazing:) i love this short but energetic sequence of full moon salutations:)
I am doing the 30 Day Tour after almost 3 years of following you and being guided by your online yoga sessions. It is interesting how different each video feels as I experience them in the different phases of my yoga journey. As my skills, understanding, and appreciation of the practice progresses, I noticed that my perspective and attitude towards each video (and my practice) changes. I do follow other yoga teachers but I always come back to Five Parks. I remain grateful to you, Erin. I still hope I can join one of your yoga retreats someday.
I have to agree with Rasmuzzen, I was surprised just how complicated the sequence actually is… That said I didn’t even know there was a moon salutation, never occured to me.
It’s funny how yoga shows how unbalanced your body is when you start. I can do almost any stretch with my upper body and the muscles in the front of my legs but my calf muscles are so tight I cant plant my feet in Down Dog, that said I’m working on it.
A vid on planing your own sequence would be great!
This is my absolute favorite of all your classes. I do it before bed, but like you said one could do it any time of day. Thanks for this unusual flow!
Beautiful to watch… Thank you… I love the slower sequences.
Perfect, Erin!!! The pace/flow, music and not much chatter! Perfect!
Did practice in the morning
And one I’ll practice often!
Fabulous sequence. Thank you. My students and I have been practicing various sequences of Moon Salutation, and I agree with my students. This particular sequence is the most enjoyable. Again, thank you!!!
enjoyed this one!:) can you create a sequence for a person with an apple figure like me?im diabetic too…
Love this beautiful moon salutation practice in Chinese Midautumn day, when you eat moon cake and appreciate the moon!
I look forward to teaching this in my classes. Seems like the best time in a class for this would be before going to sitting/reclinning poses.
Hi
Madam
I love which why you presented.will try and its very clean and perfect. Lovely class
Love you
thank you for this beutiful practice, I am a yogi beginner and I have started with sun salutation in the am as soon as I wake up and this just before I go to bed. it helps me relax and my sleeping has improved so much. it’s like melting your days stress away. love how you make it easy and not so quick that this beginner can follow
Nice clear explanation and lovely to experience another version of Chandra Namaskara. Thank you for taking the time to place on YouTube!
Erin, you are fantastic. I’ve loved every one of your videos that I’ve watched and followed. Thanks for the great yoga!
This is sun salutation ie Surya namaskar not moon salutation ie Chandra namaskar
Just finished this moon salutation and loved it. Really like the music playing in the background, its very soothing. You should have music on all your videos as it makes a difference. I’m ready to greet the day now. Thanks Erin:)
Sir this not a chandra namaskara. This is just sun namaskara with an added asana
PS: Pardon sir. Yes this is correct chandra namaskara i didnt know it was done like this.
My apologies
What a beautiful accent she has! is she from Russia? I can’t place it
I keep coming back to this video since I discovered it a few years back. Thank you for sharing this powerful, wind down sequence
If you need relaxation or meditation music please visit my channel!
Namaste:)
Great, I missed Moon Salutation so much, last time I did it was long years ago, now just Sun! Guess I’ll start my days with Sun Salutation and ending it with Moon, thanks Ester XD
It is the bestest chandra namaskar that i’ve seen. Peace and love.
I just love this video! If you ever want to film a longer moon practice, I know I’ll follow along!
This was calming but I was also sweating at the end of this, lol. This takes a bit of strength to hold goddess pose squat and the lunges.
Thanks ever so much for sharing. I am planning to lead moon salutations at class this week. Thank you!! Beautiful!

This was simply beautiful! Everything thing about it from lighting, movement and music!! Wow!! ♀️
Lovely sequence.. What is the music playing in the background? Its so soothing
This is not moon salutation (Chandra namaskar). This is Surya namaskar (sun salutation).
This my 22nd time practicing this moon salutations with you. Each time is a unique learning Journey. Thank you so much!
@mogroovee Hi, is it ok to have the palms facing the front instead? I briefly learned that, but done facing front. What is the right/recommended way actually? thank u.:)
From this video I’ve learned to do Moon salutation it was understandable and I liked the repeating on the right side part. Helped to strenghten the skills.
I like this sequence…only thing I wish was more guidance on inhales and exhales. Vital for me to enjoy a vinyasa practice of breath is a part of it.
This was amazing. My feet are killing me though..have to practice more on where they should be. Thank you for your time.
r lyy loved this practice, i hope i can do it every night! but i have a question my knee keeps on popping, do you happen to know why? I think with continuous yoga the muscle around the knee should be stronger..
I love this! Thank you so much. Your instruction is wonderful and inspiring. I am a Yoga teacher and want to instruct Chandra Namaskara tomorrow in my class as it’s a full moon. With your help I think it’ll go well xxoo
I love this class so much, this was my moon class on this beautiful new moon day:)
Very nice. I have learned a lot from you. I like your voice and very simple..I don’t like too much noise or talking. Your is perfect. Thank you. I def do this often and also next full .
I never do yoga. But this is look nice. Its yoga only for women and girl? Or ok for man?
Erin, this flow is so calm and peaceful! I did it in the morning and it was great! Namaste
Just beautiful! When I get over my head cold, I will definitely be doing this! I have always felt a connection to the moon and I can’t wait to do this!
Thank you Esther. I have been doing this sequence before I go to bed and look forward to it as a way to ease into sleep.
Finally a Moon Salutation similar to what dr. Vasant Lad recommends! Thank you!
Did this one together with some other folks in my FP yogagroup on May 25th, which is a new super moon! Absolutely wonderful flow.
This is just what I was looking for. Love this. Thank you for sharing.
I want to do this every night!!!! love that we go in an “orbit “around our mat.
D
Wow! Thank you for this beautiful lesson. I shall endeavor to learn it.
I love all your clases are super creatives, great secuencies you describe short and sweet the Asanas wich is excellent no tu much talk tx for share NAMASTE
I LOVE these 14 minutesthe poses, and the time to practice them more carefully and gracefully. Thank you very much!
Excellent, excellent! This is the Chandra Namaskar taught by Swami Satyananda Saraswati! Namaskara! Jai Jai!
Hello, why are there so many vastly different sequences of asanas being shown for ‘Chandra Namaskar’? For instance, the Yoga Journal version is completely different to this version (apart from the high lunge). For a beginner, it is confusing since it is unclear which and how to choose. Thanks for clarification.
Finally got to do this one outside, under a full moon! Thank you so much!
This is really great! I have a question about breathing. Sometimes I lose track and I’m inhaling when you’re saying exhale. Is that really really wrong? For example, when reaching up, you MUST inhale and when going to downward facing dog you MUST exhale? Thanks so much for all the videos. I prefer doing yoga at home instead of in a class and you’ve been a great help for a beginner like me.
Thank you for making this video easy to follow for those of us who aren’t as limber or coordinated.
Wow first time I got to know that there is Chandra Namaskar also
This is just amazing my son and myself love your videos we do this and Surya namaskar thank you Aditya well done
