Hey doctors – reading about stemetil has me wondering what your thoughts about the severity/incidence of akathisia as a side effect of stemetil use. I've attached some sources and the incidence of akathisia seems quite high for this particular drug.
- Randomised control trial (n=96) patients over 18 were given 10mg prochlorperazine via 15 minute infusion or 2 minute bolus.
"In the bolus group, 26.0% (13/50) had akathisia compared with 32.7% (16/49) in the infusion group"
- "Two hundred-twenty nine patients (> or =18 years old) were enrolled and contacted within 2 weeks of ED discharge to access the incidence of these adverse reactions. After the use of PCZ in the ED, 16% of patients developed akathisia and 4% developed dystonia"
- "Prochlorperazine and ondansetron appear to be equally effective to treat vomiting in the ED. Prochlorperazine may be more effective in controlling nausea. Although this was a prospective, randomized, active controlled, double-blinded study, it had a small sample size and the results should be confirmed in a larger, powered study." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3088366/
