These influences include self-defeating behaviors such as inadequate or excessive warm-ups, poor pacing, and inattentiveness to running form (insert your sport’s equivalents here). These.Performance anxiety and sports psychology As an amateur athlete, you may typically experience anxiety when you are playing against the elite players that will interfere with your ability to perform. When the individual feels as though they possess a degree of self-mastery in relation to psycho-somatic function, this serves to motivate continued efforts in attempting to increase performance.
Stress and performance anxiety is a part of everyday life for athletes. The good news is that not all stress is bad stress. In the right amount, stress helps you focus better and achieve what you want.
Stress can help athletes be more alert, motivated, and gain a competitive edge.Anxiety is a concept that is widely discussed within sport psychology. Practitioners involved in sport performance need to be aware of anxiety-related symptoms. Once awareness is built it would be prudent to deal with anxiety-related issues.
There are two distinct aspects of anxiety.Performance anxiety in sports, sometimes referred to as ‘choking,’is described as a decrease in athletic performance due to too much perceived stress. Perceived stress often increases in athletes on game day because (1) they have an audience and (2) they have extremely high expectations of their success.
Performance anxiety wears on athletes, which can create a host of negative physical and mental issues that can hurt your performance. Do you or your athletes experience physical changes, such as racing heart beats, difficulty breathing, tight muscles, upset stomach, jumpiness and an inability to produce smooth or fluid mechanics?Psychological intervention, performed by sport psychologists, can have a positive effect on performance enhancement and the personal growth of athletes.
If done successfully, it can reduce competition anxiety so the athlete isn’t so nervous before they compete.A lack of consensus makes it difficult to clearly define anxiety and stress in sport, but one definition, proposed by sport psychology consultant Dr. Graham Jones in the book “Sport Psychology: A Self-Help Guide,” is that it’s “the result of an interaction between the individual and the environment an emotional response to the demands placed upon the individual by the environment.”.Sport psychology is a division of psychology aimed at better preparing the mind of an athlete for competition.
Most sport psychologists work with athletes to help them overcome anxiety about performance during competitions. Been struggling with this for a while, I always lose the race before it has even started. Thank you so much!
Ok this is how I’m feeling,I’m a 6th grader going into 7th grade.im planning on doing volleyball, basketball, track.I have been Thinking ab scenarios in my head if I mess up or just humiliate myself in a game.My friends and family will be there and I get extremely nervous.like just the thoughts of being embarrassed infront of everyone.is there anything I can do?
I really wanna play volleyball but my anxiety in general is so so bad, I shake so bad and I almost fainted once. I’m trying to get over it because I actually wannna have fun and don’t wanna regret anything
Thanks man I wanna do a basketball I team I I’m good at 1v1 but when it comes to real games I am scared to get the ball/ I’m a freshman I’m 5”11 half I’m pretty tall but I’m very shy and nervous to miss shots or wide open layups
Thank you for this video. I was searching for a video that could possibly put my mind at ease to sleep tonight. I play at a professional snooker/pool standard and lost a match tonight miles and miles below my standard. Everyone watching telling me I was the favourite to win the tournament out then I get beaten. I have gotten into a very dirty habit of drinking before I play to try block out my surroundings and it is a shame because of the natural ability i have. It’s really hurting me because I know I can be a great way beyond what I even believe myself.
Thank You So Much that was a great insightful topic that you have touched. This can help many sporstman to perform at peak.
I have been trying to find a video like this for a really long time and this was extremely helpful. Thanks a lot.
I’m about to have my first two lacrosse games and I’ll try this and then reply to this comment to tell you how it went
Good stuff, Doc. Have you ever seen athletes with performance anxiety have a physical breakdown in a peak performance moment. I am little older and when I was young I don’t recall anyone calling these fears anxieties. I just thought I was FU in the head. It took me a long time to figure this shit out and many years of drug and alcohol abuse. I remember a football game where I was running with the ball, gaining yards, and the crowd began to cheer and while no one touched me, my knee gave out. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong, it just gave out, like I stepped into a hole (there was no hole) and I was sidelined and walked away fine at the end of the game. Would a fear of being the center of attention be the same as performance anxiety? I’ve experienced that quite a bit. In fact, in retrospect, I’ve sabotaged myself in situations of growth because of it. I also would have never exposed this in an open discussion years ago. I also see this in my son. I know that my sound strange…. Also, off the subject: why the light change in the video around 12:50?
I play Table Tennis at the National Level… I play really well while practicing and playing in practice matches with 0 or very few viewers…. but, when I play the important ones, I really get freaked out… my hands literally shake out of nervousness….. I miss very much and my feet feel too heavy in the important tournaments…. I’ll definitely try this and will surely approach to you after the results…. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!:)
Bro im getting better at public speaking no problems there and getting better in boxing. but i have this big nervousness that i somehow built up in a video game that i play (which i want to go pro on) and even when i do a normal match i have this big nervousness i try to tell myself it will just make it worse if im nervous! or it will be fking ok if i die! and when i die i m like look. its ok. why nervous to myself. its a hard time for me i have experienced this for 2 years on that game. it hurts me that i want to go pro at the game but im nervous even when doing a small match that does not even mean so much i dont understand why aswell. but i will try ur lessons from here but to be honest this voice deep down tells me eh. do u expect this to work out? like didnt u try smthin maybe similar and it didnt work? it is hurting me mentally. i havent shared this with anyone or they would be laughing about it cuz it sounds dumb
and also when i play against like some people who are not that good and they kill me it just hurts me aswell. maybe i have had bad experiences in life that cause this idk man its a hard thing
thank you so much for these tips i’ve always been great in matches but all of a sudden when i moved higher up in levels i’d get nervous and breakdown and forget my whole strategy. now ill be able to win again:)
Please add substile in this type of video..i dont understand english well…but i can read and understood it…so su substitle please
after all these years of constant fear i finally find this video to help me be consistent, thank you
Im gonna try out for track for the first time and Im nervous…. any motivation?
What could you say to someone like me, I like games a lot and I don’t like playing sports. My dad is forcing me to play sports and is forcing me to play baseball and no matter how many times I have tried to talk to him about it he just gets mad at me and threatens me and yells at me. And I’m bi-sexual while I’m pretty sure most of the team is straight. So every practice I always feel left out and separated from my team and I’m scared that if they find out they won’t accept me and might accidentally tell my dad. I’m really scared especially because my dad said that if I were ever to turn out gay then he would kill me and I don’t know if he was being literal or not, please help me and I’m this close to just giving up and ending it, please help me. And also sometimes I think to myself “I wish I wasn’t a guy” but I know that girls have hard lives too, so please help me…
bro you are so right you have inspired me to be better. now i will pump myself up before each game and tell my self i can do it thanks so much
Thank you so much, this really helps me with basketball, I do so much better because of you. I will highly recommended you to my friends. You are amazing, thank you
Hey I have confidence issues.
Firstly I believe everyone is better then me, I don’t perform well and I don’t believe in myself. I need to believe in myself and be confident but my mentality is holding me back. I get anxious, shiver and get the urge to use the washroom and I become cold. What i want is to remain confident, cool, calm and play at my peak but I can’t due to my hideous mentality. I’m inconsistent and scared of playing cause what if I play bad? Would you be able to help me.
Would you have a solution to this sir? I want to go In feeling confident and believing myself.
Thank you I’m in Found of Ex/Sport Psych
it helped me understand the theories better.
This video really related to me I am currently struggling in softball I am a pitcher and I not throwing well at all during games but i do usually good at practice. I will definitely try things from this video as I have been researching nonstop trying to understand why I am performing the way I am. This video was literally word for word how I am struggling right now and these ideas will help me I believe!
This video is soooo good to all the athletes Ik it’s very hard especially if ur in middle school ur just about to go to high school and all these people r depending on you to make varsity and get a scholarship and y’all that just destructs you for why ur really playing the sport.
When im playing pickup or anything like that i am a Lightout shooter in basketball and very good ball control, in a game i just get shook up pretty quickly and loose my confidence and get upset with myself and hold on to the previous play how i should have made that shot
My coach likes to scream… I have had panic attacks because of it. And I have been benched multiple times. Any tips on controlling it?
I love that you used soccer as your main focus because that is exactly why i came here. When you said “Performance anxiety is approval anxiety,” I really felt that and it made me realize my problem. Thank you!
It doesn’t help that I have a teammate that every single little mistake you make he has something to say about it. It makes me not want to go out to the field to play. It’s for soccer as well.
It got so bad I asked my coach to sit out in games. I know I’m good because I’m good in practice. I’m going to try these tips out and I’ll give an update.
My son a professional boxer was 5 and 0 with 4 knockouts…then choked at his biggest fight, and quit soon after the loss…sad
Im so happy i found this, i have a rugby tournament today and there will be scouts for big teams and I’ve been freaking out all morning until i found this so, thank you.
Performance anxiety on life in general. Yep, I am not really hype worthy for the reasons I’m meant to.
Hi, thank you for the video, it was really eye opening. I suffer a lot of performance anxiety in basketball, even if I didn’t yet make a mistake during the game, I already feel really scared, I do things really fast and without thinking to much (like if the ball is really hot). This unfortunately happens also during team practices, when coaches are looking (afraid of being cut/not have playing time), and result is also like not trying to do some moves or shots I normally don’t have any particular problems in doing it. The only moment I feel great and play great is when I play pickup, or situations where there’s no one really judging (because in team practices the coaches are obviously always judging in their heads), and in these situations I feel really like another player even if my opponents are stronger than the ones I play against during practices/games.
I always knew that this is related with social approval, I even asked my self why I play? What do I love so much about basketball? Probably I should focus more about the things that makes me happy / fun about basketball and less about what other thinks (even if I always had the capacity to understand feelings and thoughts of the people around me by their body language, since I was young. Probably this thing is also playing against me in social approval anxiety in sport)
My questions are: Do you have any suggestions for me other than what you talked in the video?
And, is there any psicology book, even if it is hard to understand, that talks deeply about this topic and that could help me?
Thank you in advance
You seriously had to pick my country losing against handball suarez:/
I stopped playing on league basketball games because I get anxious about getting anxious and I know I can’t be saved of something happens on the game because it is officiated and I can’t just walk off. Now I only play at my local gym since it’s easy to just walk off and gets sub to take my spot. When I get anxious on games it triggered crazy panick attacks and I get numb and I feel like I can’t control my body. Feeling like I’m ready to collapse. Sometimes my teammates have to manually Fred me because I can’t feel my hands. Is there anything you reccomend for these panick attacks? I perform well during games regardless if I’m anxious or not but the moment I think about something else everything goes downhill.
Whenever i play real games of basketball. I get scared to drive to the hoop because i think that someone might steal the ball from me or they might hurt me. Havent tried these tips yet but ill try them tomorrow before my basketball game.Thank you
Thanks man, I used to get so nervous during games because I was afraid of letting the team down and being judged, this helps a lot
I have basketball tryouts in 30 mins, ill let you guys know how they go!
Edit: they went pretty good, the first drill we did I messed up pretty bad in the layup because I was nervous but after that I took the feeling that I got when I failed and channeled it into focus to crush the next one and I did! The layup went picture perfect then the nerves were gone.
I have a problem with getting too confident . Basicly I get all pumped up and confident and when the game starts it’s like my brain thinks this will be easy and than I lose to way “worse” or lower ranked players. Do you have any tips about that? By the way this video is very helpful, been looking for something like this for ages.
I’m running in my first 5K on Saturday and I am freaking out about it. This video is helping me to drill down to why — the expectations I’ve put on myself— and not achieving them. I just really want to have fun. Thank you for this video.
is there a way to contact you maybe though email or something? thanks man
When I play soccer whether on my own or local pickup games: I’m bold, I can take people, I can create opportunities and I’m overall dangerous willing to take shots n etc. but whenever I’m around my TRAVEL TEAM even if it’s just practice I tense up and become a 1/12th version of myself, I take too long on the ball, I’ll miss shots in front of goal, I’ll be afraid to speak up. I care way too much what these kids think of me but I’m not even cool with them like that so why does their opinion matter? I’ve been dealing with this for the past two seasons and this is my final season on this team I want to finally showcase all the work I’ve been putting in but my lack of confidence gets in my way
I can play in a basketball game fine. But I’ve been playing for years and I still get scared and stressed when I learn a new drill. My brain over stresses and overthinks everything terribly and I lose my sense of direction and what I’m going. I can’t even do a 3 man weave properly because of my terrible sense of direction and anxiety
Like every part of this video I was feeling like ya this is me this is what I feel…that reverse visualisation I did that it felt soo good..thank u
I guess my problem is that i hate that nervousness feeling befor going to a game, and all the pressure of wanting to be good enough,to showcase what i practiced on for months, and hating that feeling really gets me that i am even thinking about quiting the game.i do try to focus on the game itself and on my role but that feeling of been nervous really gets me to my core! what should i do? should i just quit the game?
Thanks doc! Great stuff!Your words are medicine. They are a cure.
i play alot of tennis and i really struggle with the self-approval aspect, so much so that i can throw a game away because im so scared of losing
I have a basketball game tonight at 7:00pm for my school and I have soooo much anxiety because I’m not the best at basketball
I know this is a super late comment but I actually watched this vid a long time ago when it came out… Now, I play basketball with friends but idk y I get so nervous… Before and during, my teammates like to pick on me… Even if I miss a shot they still are like, “Kade, your a m****f***** b*tch and they are constantly tearing me down but this video helped thank you so much @GetMoreConfidence you helped me so much! Now I’m not nervous anymore and I play better than I always have because I’m not so tight… Thank you so much again! That’s y I subscribed!
Thank you so much for these tips. Hopefully I can become for confident on the soccer field now.
I will win that match. If I fail it will be okey. But… I know I can win that
Even in less athletic sports like golf….I have performance anxiety….even when I’m at the driving range with my friends and cousins, I cant hit the ball straight…..yet when im by myself that thing goes really straight
Thank you for the content it was very good. I want to encourage you to take control of the interview a little bit more to keep your guest from just talking forever and possibly losing listeners in just a chunk of talk. otherwise, I loved it keep it up!
I was nervous before a baseball tryout I had and then I watched this and I made the 14AAA Team. (The best) it really helped me overcome fear. Thank You!!!
Is it weird that I almost cried watching this?! I suffer from horrible performance anxiety and it’s pretty much across-the-board with everything-public speaking, playing and singing my guitar in front of others, and sports competition! I’ve been mountain biking for a really long time and I’m pretty damn fast, but I went into race For the first Time a few years ago and I practically had a panic attack before the race started; I was new to the town and I was so worried about what other people we’re going to think for some reason. I wound up going way too hard up the first stretch and I totally blew it. I am also a singer and I play guitar-I don’t play guitar as well as I sing but I love to do it-unless people are around and then suddenly I can’t play. I’ve been struggling with it for years. It’s weird, because I’m an extrovert-but I do suffer from horrible performance and sometimes social anxiety… So I’m going to keep watching your stuff, to you see if I can get over this crap-sadly I think it’s been holding me back for my entire life:(
It is same between sports counselling and sports psychology?
If you enjoyed this video, consider subscribing to my new Sports Psychology Channel in which I will be uploading more of these types of videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcB_th7KiE6A1igi0TgAw7g/
I don’t ever comment on videos, but you my sir just have this convincing and well… Confidence that makes me believe in you. I hope this can work for me since I always sprint faster in my practices, and then get so intimidated in my meets that I run slower…much slower
When I’m playing basketball I have good defense and OK shooting but when I Play in front of Alot of people I feel like I lose it all
I have a question:
How do you visualize the worst case scenario daily, and simultaneously not attract the worst case scenario to you?
Thanks for the vid btw.
I am watching this before my final sports day proggramme and i am really nervous…this helped me a little
Hi mate I’m a goalkeeper who just finished football (soccer) pre season it hasn’t gone to plan as last year I was player of the season this had made me think into giving up but I don’t wanna what do I need to do with my mindset as I keep getting dry mouth every game
hey! the superbowl is important to keep our minds off of the futility and repetitiveness of striving in life (i jest)
How has this video only had 2k views? This is superb and has helped me understand.
The most important thing is you have to also have a passion for the sport.
I now watch this video every day before a big football game/scrimmage. Thank you so much, my life is easier to handle because of your words of wisdom!
This really helped a lot man. I’m a sophomore playing on varsity football because of my size. I was really freaking out about games to the point where I couldn’t breathe before them. I only have 2 more months until it’s done. Thank god
YO I WAS DIEING!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!! It was so bad, my head and stomach started hurting. It’s not at all the first time…. Sport is bringing so much stress into my life, this is SOOO HELPFULL!!!!
man often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it. Omg. Thats a real Gem. Thank you.
thank you for this. it’s saved me from multiple anxiety attacks before tournaments and games.:)
Watching this right before my football game…I’m a kicker and we have a lot of pressure, I’m really scared of shanking a kick and missing a field goal.
I play at a very competitive league in soccer and I would always play really good in practices and when I’d play with friends but when it would come to a game I can’t concentrate and my confidence would go down slowly when I’d start messing up, but after watching this video I’m going to try out your techniques and hopefully they’ll work, thank you! I know this video will help me out in my future games
I’m mostly afraid of teammates judging me and yelling at me for messing up. Or making fun of me because of my size and strength. But this video really helped me! Like you said, it is all just the game and not the complete end of the world.
I have a football game today and this video really helped
ik this is very late but this helped me alot i haven’t been playing the sport i loved for over a year because of a injury and im starting it tomorrow

hey man, i was looking for videos to help me with my nervousness on darts, when i am training, i know i am one of the best, but in the importand matches……… i get very nervous, and i lose from people that are not as good as me.. i am constantly thinking that it is embarrassing if i loose from that person, and then shit hits the van… i really need someone helping me with that problem

Gonna share this with my kids great perspective on overcoming fear thank you!
thanks for the information, I’m in the process of doing my research on perfectionism and competitive anxiety.
Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried Rozardner Big Signals Reality (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one off product for learning how to last longer in bed without the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my best friend Jordan got amazing success with it.
Lovely video content! Forgive me for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about Rozardner Big Signals Reality (search on google)? It is an awesome one off product for learning how to last longer in bed minus the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my GF at very last got amazing success with it.
This really describes my life now always thinking about failure before trying, fearful and anxious to try anything when I see other people being excellent at it! I hope I’ll make it out of here
I’ve always been a “talented” hockey player, but my inconsistency, mood, feeling always made me an inconstant performer. I came back to hockey starting my second season after 9 years off, but I’m shit
3 years ago, i developped performance anxiety at work. it transformed into depression. I got back on my feet… but this year, performance anxiety came back in another context: coaching a boys soccer team. I fear not being good enough for them, for the parents, for the “directeur technique”….. i really got to practise this reverse-visualisation thing. thanks!
This is quality. A in depth view on psychology in sports and why it affects performance
Did you ever feel performance anxiety? I hope this helps you understand the underlying forces at play and definitely look out for next video in the series which will talk about a cool technique to reset and clear the caches in your programming.
