talks about Aristotle, shows a picture of Plato and Socrates.
That explains why my duolingo gathered dust. I don’t feel guilty for the owl crying anymore!!!!
Wow, where were you a few years ago? Creating new temporal landmarks helped me get out of slumps in the past, but I would only notice the uh-oh effect when I was in university or had a backlog of reports for work. Yes, setting a single implementation intention is most effective.
I like the honesty & the swearing actually helps to motivate me been looking around for a plan doing exactly what he said I was doing so fuckit I’m picking him I relate to his attitude compared to the rest of these nice guys. I’m going to do the 90 day challenge. I’ve been wanting to do this but the biggest problem was lack of knowledge of food & working out plans. How can I go wrong if he does all the planning for me like he said I just need to show up. So let’s get SHIT DONE
My goal is to get a full scholarship for Harvard University with 4 years, coz I am a second year student at my BS
I usually don’t comment on YouTube videos, but this video just hits you so well. Very easy to follow, simple tips and such inspiration to do better yourself! Keep going Matt and hopefully I can adopt 1% of your lifestyle to become more efficient.
You should make a collgeinfogeek podcast highlights channel or a playlist
Omg Thomas I thought I was following but wasn’t! So glad to be back. Thanks for your content
moving house recently has been my new fresh start effect and its been helping my goals
I want to read lots of books about several topics, but when I go to read I get bored, and ended up reading just a few pages. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
Pairing habits has always worked well for me, as long as I make the plan and decision to do so. Like, I made a rule that before I eat I need to do a quick workout, which worked two-fold because I then started using the downtime of preparing food to get a workout in, rather than snacking/grazing. Thanks for this video.
My new year will start on November 1st. I want to hit January with something accomplished.
If i take up a particular task i don”t tend to think much about it. While i do this i don’t think about why I’m doing it or how I’m doing it. I just tend to block off such thoughts. It makes doing tasks much simpler. Same with routine work.
Technically a 2018 goal (but I guess that goes along with your statement that these can be made anytime?) but i’ll be completing my 5k to 26.2m in 365d challenge at the disney marathon: )
Jan of 2018 was my first 5k in over a decade. I might have ran a total of 50 miles in 2017. In 2018 I ran 1100+ building up to the 2019 Disney marathon! It just goes to show that if you can run a 5k you can train to do a marathon within a year.
Assuming my marathon goes well, I’d like to tackle a 50km trail run and possibly hit 1500 miles. Nothing “smart” yet until after Jan 13th though: ) I had wanted to do DOPEY but honestly it’s just not worth it to me. Not relevant I guess. While I could more than likely do dopey in 2020 Id much rather do goofey and save the money from hotels and the other two races lol. Stephanie and I are doing the StarWars Kessel and Rival challenge this year too so thats fun.
Love your videos, Heather. Thanks for being such a great encouragement to the running community!
I respect the hell out of the fact that he wants people to reach their goals so much that he told them to drop his advice if they want to.
I have been working out for the past 3 months. When i started it was really hard for me to follow through. Day by day i started to discover the joy after working out and moving my body. Its very true that when you build a habit there will a point when its difficult for you to not to do the habit. Now working out has become a part of my life and its hard for me to not do it!
Wow, your Tips are really great! One can see how thoughtful and practical your video is! I really can work with your tipps
Nothing is better than watching Thomas frank and Matt’s videos
Hey Matt, been watching many of your videos and podcasts, great stuff. What is your everyday tech bag that you use when your out and about for the day?
Hi Matt, I love your channel and your content! I found you recently, and your challenges of 2019 inspired me to do something similar for 2020. Some are inspired by yours, some maybe you’ll want to explore as well!
This year I am doing:
-dry January (currently)
-flossing every day for a month (should already be a habit, right? But come on, everyone slips on this one!)
-meditating every day for a month
-practicing/studying a different language every day for a month
-no social media for a month
-write every day (journal or blog post) for a month
-get 8 hours of sleep every night for a month
-practice my instrument every day for a month
-draw/sketch something every day for a month
-read 10 pages every day for a month
-listen to a new song/piece of music every day for a month
-work out every day for a month
This video is fantastic, I am literally facing the same problems, both with the difficulty of Japanese and being bored to death trying to learn guitar music theory
Consistency is key, When we have a clear goal with a clear why and make a COMMITTED DECISION, the habit will stick
I discovered your channel about 3 days ago and I can’t stop watching your videos. I already took your free course and I’m reading your book. I love all the pop culture references and the nerd/geek comments you make! Keep it up man! Greetings from Argentina!
You are an inspiration Muchelleb. I have watched your every video but I am just curious why do you always use white, grey, black colors only. I have never seen you in colorful outfits.
I need help to force myself to go to the gym.
I’m to lazy to go so any tips for pushing myself
Would love for you to do a video on alternatives to SMART goals. I found SMART goals to be boring and task specific or disconnected from my overall goals. I only “got” goal setting when I realised there are alternatives to SMART goals.
Already achieved this level? Still want to massively level-up your self-discipline? Easy, just have kids and play again. I dare you.
tip from a person who likes to listen to interviews: Do not talk while the other person is talking. All the “mhm”s and “yeah”s are disturbing. Also sometimes you talk at the same time. Listening to them at speed 2x makes it hard to listen:D But great input. I love it.
I honestly love your videos and the aesthetic of your channel! The backgrounds in your videos are always so pretty, you can tell the amount of work you put into your videos. Keep up the amazing work!:)
Nah I’ll just watcha video like this every day then wanna do it
I have a rule to not work out three days in a row…to ensure I get enough recovery time.
6:42 looks at that person’s head at first I thought it was screen tearing but no
You can learn more about the if-then logic & The importance of Environmental change in Benjamin hardy’s book: Willpower Doesn’t Work. (A good read imo)
This does not just motivate my workout but also motivate my life whole. Thank you Jeff
Shut up show up and get SHIT. DONE. NO EMOTIONS.no. Feelings. THIS IS. SPARTA ⚔️️️⚔️️️
I’m a little confused. by a 30 day habit. Does that mean you quit dong these things after 30 days? I thought it takes longer than 30 days to develop a habit,
Oh folks, this is master piece, I’ve been following his Six pack promise during this evil Pandemic. It’s killing my abs, within a month I got some packs believe or not!
I’m so happy that I found the “tamed course” by Improvment Pill one and a half years ago. It was my first introduction into how to change habits and I had so much benefits from this since then.
The rules, just forget them and be free to do whatever you want in every moment
I vow that I will treat my workout the same way I treat my face first thing in the morning.JUST DO IT!!
This is called habit stacking (nice approach combining it with programming concepts!) Habit stacking is SUPER effective fantastic tips!
I’m a mid twenties woman with a naturally curvy body at a healthy weight, turned overweight, now spilling into obesity. I started watching Every Damn Day Fitness, and that’s how Ive heard of Athlean X. SUBSCRIBED!
I am on the second week of working out after a very very long hiatus. I am 50 years old. I have to forget about what I used to be able to do. I also have to not dwell on future results. Excercise should have you living in the moment. I do that I will succeed. I have to change this mindset. Also a problem is we see everyone else killing it and think why are we not them. Never compare yourself to others. Also in a world were everything is at our fingertips in a moment’s notice we are not used to having to be patient.
You really are a blessing for all of us (fitness freaks, athletes)
I thought I was tough but I’m new to his program doing the ax1 zero and it’s extremely challenging not bored found new ideas and ways to workout, Jeff has a great approach and a no bs trying to sell you his plan I bought the plan cause his free videos are awesome thanks Jeff
I can clearly understand what you are talking about. Exercise training is not easy even I committed to months and even 2 years of regular jogging I eventually lost motivation and consistency and now after months of atscuses I said enough is enough I want to be more consistent then I ever have been. So I am back into it looking for a routine where I would keep on training. Thank you for your advice. Yes! Goals seems to me like a limited thing and is irrelevant to consistency. You really determined from within to keep going that’s why I see your point! You are correct!
“Do you have any dreams or goals that you’re currently working on?”
Since last month I’ve been learning a programming using JavaScript language on a website called khan academy.
My goal is to create personal or public games.
And honestly it’s going good.
I still have many things to say, but I don’t want to explain too much.
What if the habit I want to pick up is picking up after myself. (shelvers open, drawers, toilet seat, stove, dirty dishes, clothes, locking doors).
One day rule: realizes that yesterday he/she didn’t go to the gym
Welp I broke my chain. Time to not do this ever again.
Two day rule: same thing occurs
I can go tomorrow therefore I will go tomorrow. Today is a treat.
I personally think you need a reason that truly matters to you to get to bed early and wake up early.
As a uni student I wanted to turn the day right where I was most awake during the day not the night. It was fun at first to live out my night owl free of parents nagging you to go to bed…
Then I wanted to be in line with friends and ”the rest of the world”.
Years later I was unemployed jobhunting and wanted to be able to eat breakfast and get ”stuck” a hour, two sometimes three without feeling it was timewise lunchtime and half the day gone without having ”done” anything. Especially living with a parent that got home at 4/5 pm and wanting to end my ”work day” then.
This habit then helped me when I got a job without fixed schedule but being ”called in” I was ready to go with quick notice. And as my work schedule have become more fixed my morning routine/sleep routine made it fairly smooth for those day I start work around 8 in the morning.
But it all started with a reason that was important for me rather than Needing to for External reasons.
Thank you for the video! I’m doing my goalsetting at a good way ✔️… the why is so important! Happy New Year to you and yours Heather…
One minute I’m casually watching this in the background the next I realise you’re referencing magic and now have my full attention
Excellent description of SMART goals.
My main event though secondary in terms of my usual running events is the Last Man(sic) Standing: that will be a test of my mental and physical fitness: my goal? 24hours, 24 × 4(and a little) mile laps = 100miles.
Achievable? Yes. Need to practice my walking techniques/walking speed.
Second goal: do the 24hr event again and stagger an extra lap…or 2?
I finished 2018 on a good note. Winter Star Ultra. 45miles. 7hrs 8mins… Over 55 mins faster than last year. 1st in age category and 8th overall….. perfect weather, cool and sunny with no rain….and my new Garmin 35 is working well!
Have a 12 hr fairly local event in 3ish weeks: will practice a bit of speed-walking during it.
Happy running to you.
I really do enjoy your vids as your enthusiasm…. intensity….shines through.
I inadvertently made out a habit to go to daily aa meetings for an entire year. I stayed sober but doubted the effectiveness of the meetings. Then corona happened. I was truly distraught without them. I’m still sober, and truly shocked at what a difference these meetings have made in my life
wow… ive never been so disappointment in life than i have after watching this garbage of what you call a video.
Like your videos alot, and I think you are very handsome too
I researched habits/forming habits last year & discovered Gretchen Rubin’s The Four Tendencies quiz, I completed the quiz & went on to buy her book (same title).
As a rebel tendency, habit forming doesn’t work for me, however challenging myself to do/be better, learning & change really are. The 2-day rule really resonated with me as a way to build on doing something I belive in, ensuring momentum at all times, without it feeling like an obligation. Thank you, I’m glad I’ve found this channel.
On another note what lip color are you wearing it’s stunning on you!
Viewers: “Jeff, easy with the cursing. You shouldn’t curse, it’s not proffesional.”
Jeff: That’s bullshit

May I pls know which software/apps did you use in this video??
Setting short term (seasonal) goals and narrowing it down to when and where definitely helps. Start little by little and you’ll find yourself working on it more than you had originally anticipated.
From a self love content creator to anotherAwesome video, love the book mentioned! ❤️
What I’ve been doing since August is setting my intentions for the new month. A new month is definitely a great fresh start that I personally recommend people to capitalize on more often ☺️
So that is what Martin looks like. I have always been listening to the podcast. I imagined that Martin would be buffer. I guess he just has a buff ass voice then.
it’s definitely true about changing the environment. You see, as long as i have sweets at home, it would be so difficult to resist the temptation. But if sweets don’t flash before my eyes, i could even forget about them.
I actually think that, when you really want something for yourself (lose fat, get fit, start a business) you should do it quietly, because, at the end of the day, you are the only one who cares about it. Talking from experience, i used to brag about how i was getting results from some new habit i was trying, but in reality, by doing this i was trying to justify my laziness looking for external validation from people that do not give a shit about it. I learned that the best way to do it, is to do it quietly and letting results speak for yourself, and also, not comparing with others.
1. If then. Make the if easier so that you automatically do your habits
2.Change environment
E.g freedom
Honestly the most useful video, I felt like crap for missing two workouts, but I have to stop attaching emotion to it
Your accent is really really annoying. Couldn’t you find someone who speaks English fluently?
Hi, random scroller
Does this lockdown have you in a funk?
Let’s be honest… These past 3-4 weeks have been pure hell for all of us. And being locked down in our homes certainly makes matters worse. For the first time in forever, peoples’ true colors are showing. With so much chaos going on you need to remember
Here’s something to remember…
It’s important, especially in times like these, to not let bad circumstances demotivate you from learning and growing as a person. You can either utilize this free time by taking aim at your goals that will improve you as a person and make your life more joyful or use this free time to:
❌ Kick back and take it easy
❌ Eat junk food and get fat…
❌ Waste your time binge-watching Netflix…
We have a rare opportunity to step back, reset, and take aim at our goals from a whole new starting line. We have more “free time” than ever, now. What will you do with yours?
‘Live Intentionally’, a 90-Day Self-Project is the solution to your problems. With it, you will be able to take control of your thought patterns, increase your focus, attention span, and emotional control.
It includes:

2) A workbook to track your progress (PDF / Digital download)

Another great video. Matt, you are my favorite youtuber, your videos have been contributing a lot in my life. I’m really happy about my routine and I keep watching you because I know there is always room for improvement. I’m even helping out a friend that wants to be more productive showing him your videos and he’s really enjoying them. Also, he is into recording and told me that admire the quality of your videos.
Again, thanks a million for everything, wish you guys the best. Stay safe.
You’re honestly the only lifestyle advice channel I can watch and not get bored thank you for keeping these videos succinct, entertaining, and to the point. The visuals are really aestheticly pleasing, and informative.
Great habit building app:) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.habbittracker&hl=en
These Ideas are from the book „atomic habits“ Gotchaaa great video man, just read the book and you helped me reflect on the knowledge!
I have one exam left before I finally finish my Honours year of uni studying psychology, and I’m so excited to move into the real world and set some new goals that don’t revolve around grades! Can’t wait to apply some of your tips especially with this fresh start!
oh my, you’re a genius. I’m having bad laziness/procrastination problems all my life and I haven’t taken action on it until just recently. I’ll try your strategy. If it works, I’ll subscribe.
I already make things easy for me, turn off facebook through apps (but then re-activate it as soon as I can come up with an excuse), I have a set routine (which I then break) and I am just generally stubborn, lazy and unwilling to do set work. Any more tips?
This year’s goals include 1) 2 marathons, Pittsburgh in the spring and hopefully Marine Corps in the fall, and 2) 1000 miles for the year.
I have problems from an overdose of drugs 2 years ago terrible memory problems and getting bloodwork what can I do I feel so lazy sometime
The fire in Australia is reported widely at Japan. I’m just a fun of your channel but I wanted to help Australia and did donation from your link. I hope the fire will go out soon.
Sorry for poor English…
Where did you put that bag of cookies and sweets. Haha just asking
Hey, Jeff. I’m wondering if you can make a video that will answer this question: in order to burn fat in certain body parts (e.g., your arms), do you have to center your workout(s) on those body parts, or could you burn fat by doing common fat-burning exercises (like long-distance running)?
After 3:05 I spent the rest of the video checking your hand to see if it was real!
Thanks a lot my dear. It’s clear. Easy to understand. My current goal: learning how to set smart goals. I want to use it first to find ways to put value on myself, develop positive thoughts about me
Remove options and stick with one. Unless that one is vshred.
who else is watching this for school in lockdown thanks to COVID-19 for a credit
This is all covered in Atomic Habits. Amazing book literally on the exact topic Matt makes videos on.
I want that wallpaper! 5:35
Does anyone have the link to donwload it?
My goal is to qualify as a counsellor, I’m studying for that now
You are very motivating for me
Your life style is impressive
Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.
Warren Buffett
I think changing your environment is good for training but ultimately in order to stay on course, you need to change You. The ultimate goal if you don’t want to eat those cookies, is to retrain your brain to NOT WANT those cookies. If you want to be a peaceful person for example, you might train in a peaceful environment at first, but the ultimate test is being able to remain peaceful in any situation. And of course remember to “Be the change you want to see in the world”
what is the name of your shotgun mic? your video sound is crystal clear
Is this part of a longer podcast it seemed to cut of quite quickly?
You should look up “Effective Altruism”. You already make a difference to many people’s lives with your excellent YouTube channel and I think if we all embraced some of the principles of effective altruism then the world would be a much better place for everyone.
Hey Matt! Sharing this video with my family, I guess everyone can pick up on habits they’ve always wanted to.. especially while social distancing. Take care folks! Stay safe!
I really want to get down some goals. Thanks for the inspo!
i know this probably impossible… but my goal is to use science to create life so i can create my own friends…
But then if you choose something easy and you miss a day then you can’t even do something simple
Its june
My goal is to learn Android development in next 6 months.
Yay!! Happy New Year!! This year, I would like to acheive a sub 2:10 half marathon in April, PR Chicago Marathon in October, and complete the Dopey Challenge in 2020. Have a great time at Marathon Weekend! I so wish I could be there…
How does one decide what is relevant when they believe that most everything outside of eating, sleeping, and being living is irrelevant?
I would like to learn a language, but at no point in the future do I ever see myself in a situation where I would need to know another language, except maybe Spanish but highschool has ruined that.
What’s wrong with wanting to learn French because it sounds nice?
the biggest thing that’s preventing me from doing habits rn is i just can’t stop looking at social media. youtube, instagram, twitter, tumblr, etc. i feel like i’m missing out on so many things by not looking at it for a few minutes. does anyone have helpful tips???
i have to watch this a type a hole paper on it that spells smart
When you saved 101 videos in the different library playlist eg chest, butt, legs, dumbells, hiit, abs, cardio, etc etc in YouTube but get none done.
Lol, I kinda just figured out this work when I left my dumbbells in the kitchen, that’s also where I go to study and work on my videos. So what I do, when I’m stuck, I procrastinate, this way, I just pick up my dumbbells and work out. I also have this fitbit which always reminds me to go jogging, but the lack of bordem stops me, so I intergeated Pokémon go, into my jog, making it more fun.
Happy New Year to you and your family Heather, I’m currently thinking about goals but I have a half (March) and full (October) booked to keep me training and still hoping to do Dopey 2020. Have fun doing the Disney half next week looking forward to the recap.
Been following you since you were under 40k and you still blow me away every time with your original, actionable and informative tips! It’s been a joy to see you grow x thank you for being such an inspiration!
hey.. Thomas..my question is that I want to read many books on various topics like productivity, sci fi, novels, etc. I have those books but I am not able to finish any of them properly bcoz I get confused on which book read. And also I get very attracted on buying another book you suggest or I like..I just can’t stop myself.. please help.
How bout for households with many people other than yourself such as large families with children who eats those sugary snacks? Or going to the gym if you’re the primary caretaker of the kids and can’t afford a babysitter?
Now see, I just want to run all the races, so my goal is to show some restraint. Some. Boy is that going to be hard. But my other goals are to… run 1,000 miles this year, PR my full marathon and my 10K, possibly PR my half or 10 miler time for a better corral placement for a future WDW full/dopey. And to have lots of fun running and maintain the joy that running brings me.
I’m about this quote:”you need to control your environment”. What if I live with my family? What should I do?:-)
This was amazing, such a good story teller. Aspiring to be like you when it comes to that!
“Goals are the ‘what’,without a ‘why’ they don’t mean shit”
JEFF ‘AthleanX’ CAVALIERE
Man I love your videos, even your podcast but i don’t know why I cannot pay attention on them. They don’t catch me like matt ones
I am trying to find a way to self motivate myself to build my strength again and get in shape after being out of the gym for months from the shutdown, it was where I felt consistent and motivated
I’ve been binge watching all your videos! Great content! Also, I’ll be getting married at the little white chapel too! Haha
What if people and their decision on your life becomes a obstacle in building habits. Like mom and dad(They try to make your life better, but sometimes makes seriously damaging descisions)
Wow! I am finally a happy and consistent person! i love your videos!❤️
I’m using this video to procrastinate studying Maths. I’mma go do that now.
Taking control of your life is the KEY to happiness and success. We all start
somewhere, whether that be at the bottom or with a little help. Ultimately your
potential is determined by your habits, which will DEFINE Who you are and
what mark you leave on earth.
The biggest thing for me was definitely laziness. Once we get in a consistent flow, our habits come naturally to us, and even if were feeling lazy. Definintely going to use these tips!
Oil your cybernetic augmentations? Elevensies? You are so adorkable.
Focus on one thing and put all your heart and energy into it ♡ what you focus on GROWS! Set your intentions and yes! Schedule it! Discipline and consistency will always take us further
These snippets from the podcasts are cool:) ive already watched the full version but these snippets help me digest the learnings more:)
Am I the only one who hit like after he talked about the algorithm?:))))
Whenever I try to do something like learning a new skill I usually last 4 days and then give up so nowadays I don’t even bother trying no matter how motivated I am to doing it cause I know in a few days I’m going to give up. I pretty much don’t try anything anymore cause of this. Tbh if there’s some long term fix in this video I probably won’t do it cause I know I’ll give up and it’ll have been waste of time. I really do want to try though
1:09 shit I’ve been called out
My goals are to do my 1st half Marathon in April ( Star Wars weekend ), A stepping stone to dopey challenge fallowing year
I love watching all the videos of yours and van damme sly all them but I never want to do it my self I don’t understand why as I’m drawn to all this I guess as I’m dyslexic and 40 and still don’t no my purpose or talents any tips please
This guy has love affair with von strangle….2nd time he mentioned him in his vids…
Love your videos! Thanks for the inspirational and no BS content!
Main goal for 2019 is to be debt free minus our car and house by 12/31. Running goals 2 more half marathons a 5k pr and a 10k pr. First Half and 10k are on the calendar. I’ve already bought my training plan for those 2; however, I will be in touch once that plan ends:-) hopefully you’ll still be taking clients in May!!
The 2-day rule is really a great way to relieve that pressure of feeling like we have to be perfect. Your videos are always so AMAZING.
wow how do you make sure that every new video you have is SO SO valuable and different from the others?
You are a phenomenal creator. The rest of YouTube’s repeatable formats is QUAKING sis! LOVE YOU!
this video come to my youtube home after I watched and subscribe “I’m an ordinary mom, jin” about how she changes habit to workout and learn English” and I changed my habit in 2 days in row *so proud
I subscribed you
I dont know if many men follow your channel, but they should. I’ve been wanting to launch a photography business, but with family obligations and work.. This helped me stay on track to get things going!
Thanks a ton!
As of currently me, my elder sister, my mom and dad are suffering from diabetes, and I’m scared something is going to happen to one of use, especially since my sis and I are so young, and it’s really hard to control. My goal for watching this is so that we can at least gain the strength to control it and live a long healthy life style.
i do the pull-up thing too!! i live in a small room so mine is over my bathroom. My rule is 5 pull-ups for every time I come home
I love how you’ve illustrated this. SMART goals are ‘de rigueur’ in coaching and business and I find them very useful. I have often found it useful to make a distinction between ‘big dreams’ and ‘attainable goals’, as I’ve seen some people try to ‘SMART’ the big dream. I find it’s also work exploring impact bias. Thanks for this video!
I I live a comfortable life sometimes I will live a comfortable life always….
I would even say to start fresh every week or every day. Of course, I got to this point by starting fresh like you said, on the new year and then every season, every month and now I’m at the every week. I want to get to the everyday stage soon =) Because if I have a lousy day yesterday I will not wait for the next week to work on that habit/goal and do it tomorrow =)
Anyone else fed up of being in school/ uni and just want to get the damn grades so they can be a real person with goals outside of ‘study and get an A’?!
I have a Goal to build my body like Stanley “Tookie” Williams before I turned 30..and I’m 26 now
If you still want to learn japanese, duolingo realesed the Japanese course a while ago.
No, don’t say that you can’t stick to getting your daily xp goals. I once failed to reach 20 exp a day, but sinse you showed me habitica I do it almost every single day and now I’m on a 50 exp a day streak. So you defenatly should try it out:)
Putting your phone under your bed is genius! I will definitely be trying that tomorrow!
What if I work 3 months on something and make it my priority and succeed, but it’s a goal with a long term, like learning a language. Would work if for the next quarter I put something else in the first spot of priority while I still work on the first goal, just that at that moment that goal would be the number 2 on my list, and so on?
As you already know, I love your videos and I will try to learn as much as I can from it <3
A fact about me: I only disliked one video since I started watching YouTube and that is about 8-9 years ago
Matt I procrastinated in watching this video leaving it in my watch later list. Personally as someone with ADD I need hacks and processes to trick my brain into being productive.
Thankyou for the help your videos give me and thank you for your donation. Tom, Canberra Australia.
Thank you for such great & RESEARCHED content! I know your videos will be good because you reference so many studies & books. I love that about your channel!
The “u-oh” effect is like when your at work and it’s almost time to go home, I always work harder!
I like the idea of setting up reminders because it really is hard to remember something new sometimes.
I like doing hard or long task for 15min at a time. I break things up and choose what to do during a extremely focused 15min intervals. That way when the villain (Ms. Suella) part of my brain try’s to keep me from getting things done, I say it’s just 15min. You can do 15min, no problem. If 15 is too much try 5 minutes. 15 minutes is my magic number and it’s amazing how much you can do if you’re completely focused.
This video has actually helped me a lot. I feel really releived actually c,: I’ve been setting goals for myself for years, and I never followed these steps. I always tried and then failed, and I thought it was that I didn’t have enough motivation. But this really showed me that I was completely going about this all wrong. I’m going to go make some goals for myself! Tysm!!
Well if you ever have a hard time not procrastinating with your cardio just try to remember, if you’re trying to gain muscle mass: Cardio has plenty of benefits to increase your muscle mass gain rate. Do cardio and you’ll get better gains.
The greatest Harry Potter fanfiction is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.
Came for some good advice, subscribed for Magic: the Gathering.
Thank you for this nice and informative video! I have a lot of takeaways from it!
rewatched the video without adblock one more time with all ads to help out the australia situation. thank you for the chance to become a tiny part of it! love your videos!
I will start an MSW program in August this is my three year goal.
Ok but I have NO positive habits. No I don’t even shower or brush my teeth regularly. Or eat properly. SEND HELP
Re: we’re no automotons the most important survival stuff you dok all day, like breathing, and keeping your heart beating and such is all automatic (until you start worrying about it and mess it up,of course.) I tell the kids to go to the bathroom every time I put my shoes on to leave the house. It’s automatic now, and I don’t have to make a stop five minutes down the road.
Something that has help me to stick to my goals is the two day rule.
Seriously reminds me of many of my old baseball coaches I had growing up. And you dont really get these pep talks after you grown up into adulthood. And I feel like even as an adult it’s what you need to hear sometimes. I’m so glad I found this channel. Its exactly what I needed. Thanks jeff
No specific goals for me yet. I have Dopey #3 coming up very soon. With that I just want to have fun and enjoy the races. Beyond that I am not signed up for any races yet. I want to find and run more local races. I haven’t done much in terms of local races and want to run at least 2 through this year. Happy New Year!
It looks like you’re sitting on the toilet in the thumbnail
The change of environment is because novelty triggers dopamine! I learned this from your other video hahah
I really want to know how these youtube algorithm works… Why were there videos with vegetarian dogs and tutorials for boiling water in my recommendation.
My secret for my body is consistency, just that. Thrue 100%, i like that people like you exist, big respect
You need to make a video on how you edit your videos, please!!!!!
Thank you SO much, Muchelle! There’s so much here I’m starting with Implementation Intention of prepping my porridge by 10.45pm before heading for bed to get my sleep routine and morning routine off to a good start. This is going to have a HUGE impact on my goals and life. You Rock!! (Big hugs from the UK) xx
I’m holding off on making any new running goals until after Marathon weekend when I meet my goal of running my first half marathon but I definitely want to do more races in 2019 than in 2018. I’ve already learned that I’m super motivated by bling so I want to find some races to do with really cool medals.
why did i think 2:22 was a clip of kendall roy from succession…?
it was Gold.
Dammm. It could be use in many area of life.
The first advice was make sure you are listening to good advice.because bad advice gives bad result.
The bad one is not consistent with your reasoning.
have more whys more than goals. And stick with acheving it.
Definitely going to try and incorporate the uh oh effect, always great advice:)
The turning point of the video 1:39 “find a way to make it more fun”
Routines are not allways fun, neither is wiping your ass but you still do it
Get shit done, bitch
Thank you for your motivational video and for offering to help Australia.
Honestly, I wanted to take a break today. But after watching this, im doing it
Thank you guys this video really gave me some inspiration I started a new workout plan (I’ve started one before but gave up on it because I got bored of it and just gave up) thanks for the inspiration guys let’s hope this workout pays off ^-^ ✓
Nice video! I love how you are consciously looking for habits to build and chasing after them. So many people don’t put enough thought into this!
was it just me or does the thumbnail look like Matt is in the toilet? that’s a good “habit”:P
Me: Finishes video
Also Me: Continues to eat chips and binge productivity videos
hahah SMART goals i have learned about this on my bussinnes school, im studying administration-marketing in university
Hehe I read the comments instead of watching this for school
I was thinking about this problem and I actually just wrote it on a sheet of paper and figure out how to commit the goal that I need to acheive, ’cause I have the same struggle of starting a new habit so exited then it’s less motivated like Learning Korean language for me and Memorizing but at the same time i don’t want it to be boring and less fun.. I tried “Don’t break the Chain” method and I’m just sometimes in the mood of Not feeling like doing it.. but luckly i notice it quickly and put a plan, brain storming to organize my thoughts, get rid of the barriers and keep it up.. it’s just another thing that i would like to point is when we pet on our shoulders in situations like this and deny our failure most of times and that’s what actually stop us if we were not aware of it..
Anyway Thank you Thomas for the video, all of your videos and podcasts are seriously amazing it helped me a lot, Good Luck!
I LOVE the idea of the seasonal review. Historically, I’ve been a “Birthday” reset person rather than New Years, but checking in seasonally will really take that to the next level. And being that my birthday happens to be the first day of Spring, it should really work for me!
What challenges will you have this year?
Some of the past chalanges as cold showers and make more exercises/go to gym more often and be mininalist i did it too, and i must say, taking you as an example for self-improvement really was a good ideea
This is an excellent video. Practical, easy to understand. Very useful, thanks
I love how you started with changing your environment! It seems so simple, but when you stop seeing all these cookies and sweets around you, you are less tempted to eat them! Thank you for going through this journey of trying out 12 habits for all of us to learn from.
This video was awesome!! Thank you for explaining everything so well
here’s a new habit for you: get to the point! really, I wanna know about some card game or youtube codes, I’d watch a video about that.
Thank you for this video. Very educational. Now I goal to write better goals by tomorrow!

Stick notes, remainders on prominent place, where you cannot ignore them.
Use 2 day rule.
I started so many good habits during quarantine (so 90 days) and as soon as I went back to my “normal” life the habits immediately fell apart:(
extremely useful video:) Thank you so much. This is helpful for me at so many levels
I’m trying to learn Japanese and I’m really trying to devote myself. It’s hard to find motivation.

The unique thing that you suggested in this video is inversion planning. I never knew it. please try to elaborate it in another video. Your content is powerful and I have became super productive since September. Love your life admin days too. Will try out for myself soon. You rock, girl!
Too bad none of that money went anywhere, billions of dollars from all over the world in limbostill
Thank you for always being there and helping us Been following your videos for 2 years and I honestly don’t know what I would do without you.
Thanks Jeff for being like an elder brother, father figure, honest trainer, caring coach… All rolled into one.
Wow is your partner an Aussie?… If so, how cool. I live in Australia and am inspired by your vids, thankyou! #Onelove
My Goals:
1. Improve my problem solving skills (within 6 months).
2. Become a full stack web developer (within 2 years).
3. Become a freelancer (within 4 years).
These are my top 3 goals
I need to make being lazy a non-habit. So I will disregard your advice and power through.
If you’re watching this, you have all the full potential to reach your goals!✨ I believe in you, & you will be successful in 2020!
Love that you have so many practical tips for everything in life!! I have no idea how you come up with it all
woohoo i am soooooo happy grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Excellent advice… “Man ever aspires to greater heights and loftier goals. He ever seeks to attain a world surpassing that which he inhabits, and to ascend to a degree above that which he occupies.” Baha’i Faith
I just watched this video for the first time. Very inspiring, thank you. @Better Than Yesterday did you run your marathon?
Hey! Another great episode as usual, but I think you could turn down the brightness of the screens in the back a little! The background is fairly crowded already and that plus the screens is a little distracting, making viewers focus on the words less.
The Brilliant discount still works! Thank you so much for the 20% off!! I’ve been looking into sharpening my math skills as well as learn quantitative finance and never got around to it. This is great motivation to really start learning (and having the accountability of buying a whole year)
I’m watching this for myself. It’s god information. Simple and doable. Thanks for sharing…
What if I’m still a child and my parents always buy sugary foods
Advice from a qualified guy who walks the talk!
Few strength coaches etc are in shape Jeff is.
There’s no quick fix to getting in shape, strong etc.
Consistency absolutely is the #1 criteria using good methods
Well Said!!!
Dude your video quality is incredible…love how they are fully produced videos, great cinematography, etc.. great job!!
Just a note. That quote at the beginning is not from Aristotle, but form Will Durant. When he tried to summarize Aristotle’s thoughts on morality, he created that phrase. Not to say, that Aristotle didn’t think that, just that the wording comes from someone else.
love smart goals! Every year we, as a family, write our goals/bucket list on a large piece of paper and hang it on the wall. We are reminded daily of what we set out to do and we get the satisfaction of checking things off the list! One of my goals is to get my running coach cirt., I know you are a running coach and was wondering how or where you received yours. Any help is greatly appreciated!
yesssssss I so needed to hear this and I can relate! I have so much potential but often find myself getting bored and quitting or not producing as much. Thanks for the motivation!
I like this channel because it so very informative about productivity & success
Wow great tips Muchelle! I am going to do a vid about goals on Dec 7th. Thanks for making my research easier! 😉
Finish my PhD in 4 years and work for or create my own retreat center to help people heal in body, mind and soul
It hurt when he only had one equals sign in that if statement
Is your workout plan good for a woman too? I’ve noticed that I see more men and I really want to get I to shape the right way.
I did the same thing when I was a kid. I made a rule that I’d practice piano for 5 minutes every time I walked by the piano.
The piano was next to the bathroom.
(and today all of my income comes from music)
Thanks for the option comment, I need to be more focused on that, just assessing what’s best for me.
My 2019 Running Goal is to run my first marathon the race I chose is the Marine Corps Marathon. Even if I don’t get in via the lottery, I’ve got a couple charities that I know will have bibs for it in mind, or I might save up like crazy and do the Four Star Package (it costs between $1600-2450 depending on how many runners you have and how many days you want to stay).
I have so much work to do. So far, I have been able to get through races no matter what my training looked like thanks to generous time limits or just a ton of willpower, but that’s not gonna cut it with this one. I want to finish, and not just finish, but finish strong. So my focus needs to be on getting stronger, improving my running technique, and building up my overall fitness level. I also need to work on my discipline so that I don’t skip workouts just because I don’t feel like doing them. I know that traditional training plans don’t really work for me (I hate long runs with a passion and will find any excuse to avoid them), so one of my tasks in the next couple months will be working on figuring out a training method that does work.
So, did you reach your marathon goal and when?
I am binge-watching your videos awesome content!
Do not donate to the Red Cross do other places, the Red Cross never uses the money properly some goes missing or someone gets payed more then they should.
Haven’t been this grateful or appreciative of a coach since p90x
I’ve been consistent for 5 years but I’m still not even close to your size it’s 5% consistency 10% diet and 105% genetics
My goal is to sneak up behind Nancy Palosi and give her a swift kick in the pants.
Wow, Thomas… this video spoke to me on SO many levels. You hit all my nerd buttons and even mentioned pretty much every habit I’m trying to form, including taking care of my plants and writing the next Harry Potter level novel. And now, time for elevensies while I watch this again.
This guy(Jeff) is going at next level inspiration. Hats off to you Jeff for your sincerity
Has anyone successfully followed all or some of Matt’s habits
Hello sir very well explained. Kindly share on which software which software you created this video. I will appreciate. Many thanks.
Bro, You should get paid for being alive. How many people do you motivate a day?
What do I do when i get lazy to stick to my habits?
I just save it to Watch Later
I am really curious if you are familiar with Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies Framework. I guess you know about him because if I am remembering it correctly you mentioned her at one of your videos. This accountability strategy was mentioned by her as the habit of obligers, one of the tendencies. I am not one of them (and even though it is a nice framework one needs to be critical of it) but I found this “having a friend to hold you accountable for) really useful. Thank you for all of your tips!
Some times it is difficult when you’re parents say you cant workout today or when they say you cant for a week cuz your room isnt tidy
Been watching your videos for a while. But after this video i had to drop a sub
I have a goal to pass the two classes I’m taking in the next 13to 14 weeks. I then brake it down to my daily goals to achieve.
I love smart goals and this is so helpful in thinking about them in an effective way. Thanks.
I really need to stay dedicated to working out im 14 any i am really small and weak so hope this helps me out
long story short…. brilliant.org.… lol I did not see that coming, I never seen an ad slide in so smooth on a youtube video

Just found this channel and subbed! Thanks for the great content.
My goal is to have healthy perception while the world is corrupted. So I now am first off from social media and six months later will only go back for necessary purposes.

Just did the implementation intention I’m a music student and need to practice ear training (what) every morning when waking up (when) at my piano with a cup of tea (where, but make it fancy).
(which could fail if I get lazy, or don’t have enough time, or get bored of it. All of my reasons to fail are lined up and ready to be slayed!)
Something that I think really sets Jeff apart is that he’s not about his programs or methods alone his focus is on helping people become the best they can be. He even says at the end where most people pitch, whatever program you go with, “do it.” This guy is for real.
Happy New Year Heather! Castle to Chateau and 36k challenge and not to get injured are my goals for 2019.Have a great time at WDW next weekend! ♀️
1. You need to control your environment. Do not bring junk food to your house to begin with if you want to eat healthy.
2. Hold yourself accountable. Make promise and stick through it.
3. Use the 2 day rule. Don’t let yourself take 2 days off in a row, it can easily develop into 3, 4, 5 days off.
Happy new year, Heather! So my running goal I’m looking at is a full marathon…I’m on the edge of upping the half I’m signed up for in October to the full… I’ll know for sure after Princess in February to make 100% sure it’s on (and spoiler: I am leaning towards the full!).
Every time I watch Jeff’s videos i get the urge to go to the gym. He’s simply the best and we are lucky to have him.
I swear that I want to follow the atlean x programs but I feel like a pussy if I can’t do it on my own
Jeff please advise me on a good plan. I need to rejuvenate my body and start it again with basics but with proper form. I am about 100kg and need to bring out more muscle mass to hit 88kg to 90kgs. Kindly recommend me something on this. Thank you
Ok, your wish of learning French reminded me something.
So…..I also wanna learn Korean, because I like kpop, k-dramas and Korean music. The problem is I alway have to rely on subtitles that’s why I started to learn the language. So is it also useless??? Plz answer.
I love the feel of really hurting the next day or after two days and it’s easy to recognize the impact. However it totally does kill the consistency when you can’t workout in two weeks. Even increasingly when you really want to workout because you enjoyed it, but then you spend two weeks just laying down and after that you’re not feeling it anymore, you’ve grown flegmatic and perhaps even mildly depressed about having to just relax.
Point in case, did the perfect home workout routine for beginners from athlean a while ago and it was an amazing feel. To be able to push the muscles beyond the burn and fatigue, because of the smart workout structure. It was supposed to be every two days and I was excited to have some solid base, something straight-forward to follow and dynamic to personal level. Except I could barely stand after the first workout and it was just a single cycle with breaks in every gap, not 2-3 cycles and continuous as recommended (given that the pauses were recommended to adjust to personal level). Couldn’t do anything for two weeks. But oh god how good it felt to hurt everywhere in a healthy way.
Verdict: too out of shape to be a beginner. Rank: Jesse.
Lesson: don’t follow athlean-x beginner plans, you’re too weak for the time being, do individual groups at time or individual exercises and combine them to desired level and you can repeat them. My body can’t even handle exercising all groups with proper intensity throughout the week on repetitive days continuously or it falls behind in recovering and starts to get negative gains, just exhausting and making the muscles ache. It’s rough to want to address all imbalances and weaknesses, but having to choose what to do which day. Leaves you feel like it was way too little, just a short burst. Can’t even do those “22 days” workouts at the same time with correcting exercises for all lacks without break days. Attributing this partially to inadequate calorie intake level. Just sleeping enough is also not enough, sleep at night to have proper meal rhythm and to get enough food in, time to eat all the snack fruits between meals etc!
James over at Shredded Sports Science has a great phrase, and describes a trap that I’ve fallen into many times:
“Paralysis through analysis.”
I.e. Too busy looking at unique programmes or complex training styles etc to just get on and be consistent.
Goals don’t have to be realistic! Dare to dream. Be bold. Dream
with current circumstances, the uk is on lockdown and gyms and bars don’t have the choice to not close
Hi there, i struggle to keep a workout routine as i work day and night shift in the working week. My hours are up and down as is my body so im a bit lost with what to do! Thanks for the info btw!:)

People be goin to the gym for all the wrong reasons…tell’em coach.
I loved your 2 day rule. Used it for my workout and was able to make it stick.
U r my favourite YouTuber! Tips not only helpful but explained in a way that I can relate to and apply it to my life
He’s hot smart clearly kind and pisitive… and a little nerdy. Mancandy.
Your content is so high quality. Easily my favorite youtuber.
In a world of Birds of Paradise and Man-o-War, be a Tarmogoyf.
Write your goals down daily, helps you stayed focused on days you don’t feel like showing up.
I only struggle bcs of school and work, sometimes it drains u and you can’t find the time between those two
It is not correct to say that if your aim is to have better body your specifics should be going to gym because going to gym is not a guarantee that your body will be better. Other than that keep producing new videos how to be better than yesterday.
Hi there. I have been searching youtube and other sources for help with consistency and came to the conclusion that nobody really had the answer. I stumbled upon your video by chance. I am a 55 yo woman and regardless of what you said about your language, (BTW, it’s not.very bad lol. IMHO), this video was the.only one that actually hit home to my way of thinking. Sub’d and liked
THANKS!
Why did I think he was sitting on a toilet seat in the thumbnail
I ALWAYS give up after a few weeks because I don’t have sense of direction on what to eat what to do. I’m 164 lbs 5’10. I have a jiggly stomach and thighs no abs. Or chest pumped. My why is that I want to be fit! I want to be able to be confident in the summer with my shirt off rather then a bird chest and jiggly stomach. Please coach any advice on what to eat like consume for the best protein intake and nutrition!!!? I loved this video by the way.
Please don’t leave me hanging I really want this.!!
Thank youu.
Sometimes i think that your videos should not be free to watch.
How else is watching this for school in lockdown thanks to COVID-19
I have never seen a video from him before until now, and I would just like to comment that this guy has some really intensely beautiful eyes.
3:22 possibly first time I’ve heard an uncensored F bomb from Jeff Cavaliere, athleanX.com. It was very effective in getting his point across.
it’s nearly 2020 and i”m ready to reset my life and start achieving my goals! i’ve been rewatching your old series and this is the perfect addition. (i’m obsessed with the colouring, every time i see your new uploads it’s like a warm hug)
Matt: new video
Me: changes resolution to 4k
