You can’t beat sardines. I gently heat canned sardines in brine (with bones & skin) in a little unsalted organic butter or ghee with organic whole black pepper corns. The gentle heat transforms the sardines; they then taste like fresh fish just out of the oven or pan.
YOUTUBER: Yup.. thats what the data says.. DR BERG: sends it to a lab wtf? Geezus.. I like to know that he uses the same ambitions in his fact, as he does as a doctor. How brilliant.
My question is.. Sardines are the lowest in mercury fish so would it harm you to eat 1-3 cans daily for a short period of time like 1 month? Or is it generally safe?
Do you have to eat ALL the fish? I dont want to chew a fish brain…
Thanx, I’ve been curious about this topic for a while…..great video!!!
Healthy or not healthy who cares. Coronavirus killed 80k ppl they weren’t expecting
You are the best. I’m happy that there are people who don’t have an ego so big that they aren’t willing to correct themselves. You have always been my go to online health Dr.
Too many fussy people. Complaining and nore complaining. If you live in the poor countries, see humble the people are. Thanks for the video. Awesome.
Thank you so much as i was looking for exactly for this info
Im from south west coast india.
We eat lots of sardines here. Its yummy and tasty.
I eat Chicken of the Sea canned Oysters too……but I prioritize fresh oysters over canned oysters. Trust me, fresh oysters taste much better and they’re much bigger!!!! More expensive of course. Kroger’s sell a 4oz container of it for $11.99.
Just ate them today out of a can for the first time. I had it with diced tomatoes, hummus olives and pita bread. It taste awesome.
sardines cooked in oil topped with bay leaf, chilli a little bit of salt and peppercorns
fresh bread, in the middle of the day with an iced coke
NICE
love the sardines…wild salmon and kippers…thanks Dr. Weil!
It’s sad that this doesn’t have more views. you’re doing a great thing!
For someone who eats a can of sardines (in olive oil) every day, this was very helpful. Thanks for this info, Dr. Berg!
My grandfather used to put canned sardines into egg salad, and it was very tasty!
Little fish with a lot to offer, I drain and mash mine, mix with onion, parmesan and rocket. Plenty of calcium, protein and healthy fats.
I ❤ sardines!!! Used sardine with tomatoe sauce with bread.. Good for eyes and brain..
Insane music so bad couldn’t watch video… The world is deaf
My doctor turned me on to sardines a while back. Best medical advice I’ve ever had
Do yourself a favor familiarise yourself with Moses law of clean and unclean animals do what is right eat what you are suppose to eatobey the word of the Almighty and you won’t come short of your needs and even your wanting desires will be met at an appointed time of rest on the last day the day of judgnent
@t8official..how do u eat sardines? Oh yeah……on a bed of organic sustainably harvested bean sprouts grown in a fair trade zone.
Thomas DeLauer, You Forgot to Consider an important factor which is if the Canned Fish has any Chemical Preservative or Not?!
What is the benefit of a Low Carb Canned Fish which is filled with Nitrites, Sulfites, or other Chemicals Preservatives?!
I’ve been eating mackerel like crazy (a few times per week) Didn’t realize that about the carbs. No wonder they hold me over for so long. I feel great after adding them to my diet. Definitely good after a workout.
Great video. I love a good guitar but the volume is a bit much. It’s over powering your message.
nice. im eating sardines and roti right now. it is amazing for your body
sardines rule! delicious and nutritious. best to get fresh and grill as the wise man says.
I think it’s better to get them in water… you can add olive oil back in to the level you want..
Salmon Patty’s are good and good for you I use crackers 1 egg some onion put in patty and cook yummy
Thanks, Dr.
Muslims scholars, like Alshafey, used to correct themselves when they found out they said wrong information.
Yes but does heat treating render the fat as toxic/oxidized and therefore not wise to consume?
I had gastric bypass and one can a day is plenty for me. Cholesterol is perfect!! Plus, I’m a flight attendant, so the B12 helps so much. I heat it up with some quinoa/brown rice and spinach. Ugh. So good. I make a dip of Vinegar and Soy Sauce (it’s a Filipino thing). It’s so good!!
Yes but are all the brands that good??? You just tested one it sounded like
Is it okay to break a prolonged water fast with canned sardines?
Wow, that’s swell! Proving Doc you’re no fooland is quite factual in your approach to thingsgood job!
I love sardines too…I’m a rawfoodist usually, but I still love sardines. I can eat the sardines right out of the can. They’re best in olive oil. Wild Salmon is good too, being in the NW, I love it, but…Salmon aren’t the best fish to eat speaking environmentally.
Wild planets products are amazing! I love their tuna and sardines! They’re high quality and taste great. Thanks to costco for carrying wild planets items.
I eat the wild caught now in tomatoe sauce or water. I make a salad and throw them in. It’s great and filling with balsamic vinegar and olive oil ❤️❤️❤️
Smoked oysters on pizza are fantastic. Thanks for sharing, lots of valuable information in this video.
Not sure what you are claiming is accurate. I did some research on vitamin B12 in canned sardines and found conflicting information. Some research papers show very little amount of B12, because the canned sardines are double cooked at high temperatures. High temperature destroys B12. However, some other papers have shown high levels of B12. It is possible that not all sardines are processed the exact same way. High temperature is need to prevent botulism, but perhaps some cook them more than others?
Some manufactures puts B12 claims on the products, others don’t. I wonder why? Perhaps we need to eat those that have nutrient claims? I also wonder how valid are these claims? Companies lie all the time!
There is also the problem of endocrine disruptions found in the plastic lining of the cans…
Some mercury, not as much as in tuna, but if you eat them everyday you might run into issues?
I like the spicy sardines and the mustard ones too. Are those ingredients bad? I eat oysters in water so I’m good there. What about Herring Kippers? I like them on crackers, are they okay?
wow on a boat makeral i not a good fish to even keep is what we were told
Thanks everyone for your support on this journey. Please share your thoughts on sardines in the comments below I would love to hear!
I always hated sardines in oils. Once I found sardine in water never turned back
If it swims or crawls on the bottom of the ocean streams or lakes it welcome to dinner.
In Italy we have them in extra vergin olive oil. Sounds OK for me…
body builder here and im a big fan of sardines when i get tired of chicken and tuna i always go after sardines 1 can makes two burritos. i put alvacado, lettuce, slaso and hot sauce. SOOOO GOOD. if you can’t get passed the smell or the way they look you will be a beta forever. happy eating everyone
Hello Thomas, i know you said to avoid canned fish in oil. Does that include olive oil. im on a keto diet btw.
is it safe to eat canned fish so? there are no other harms?
Great to know! Thanks for double checking and having the samples tested.
My local Costco had a sale on Season brand in olive oil. I purchased the 4 case limit of them (144 cans)! I also like them with hot sauce and homemade sauerkraut. My wife thinks I’m disgusting…lol.
Mackerel is a less fishy than Sardines in case you are considering this as an option AND Roe can usually be found at your Asian grocery such as the Japanese grocery
I can count on 1 hand and have fingers left over, how many times I’ve heard somebody say they were wrong.
I like sardines cause I’m kinda lazy. A can of sardines and some crackers or bread and you’re set. Saves time.
I left right away when you start talking about likes and bell icons! Just start taking about the title subject please!
There are good reasons to limit meat consumption. 1. Fibre 2. Deoxycholic acid 3. Ammonia products. 2&3 are poisonous the body seeks to rapidly get rid of through kidneys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPxwULA5Kg4
Beware canned oysters-most are from China. All the coastal waters off China are contaminated with bacteria and heavy metals. One worrying trend-many canned fish suppliers do not supply COI.
Nice work Dr. Berg, my next question is are those Omega 3 fatty acids oxidised? Because I imagine a percentage will be from heating.
I had the most delicious way to eat sardines, mashed on a ryvita with sriracha and spicy brown mustard,, shredded cheese melted in the micro with a dollop of sour creams…..sooooooooooo good.. if you are not a fan of sardines you hardly notice.
This is excellent information. Thank you for the re-evaluation and further research into this.
Before vid stats, sardines best by far. Most omega 3 and lowest mercury. Edit yay hes not sleeping on sardines.
I have never ever heard of Roe in my life. Otherwise good mention on all the main hitters it canned seafood ✊
Don’t understand why you can’t get sardines in olive oil, isn’t that your fat intake on keto?
taking zinc can enlarge penis but has diminishing return to nonexistent effect in your 20s, so younger you are the better.
So yeah oyster…..
For some reason I am allergic to all finned fish except sardines. I can also eat shellfish. This is the only finned fish I can eat that I dont taste pure seawater and overly fishy flavor followed by an immediate allergic reaction.
With sardines, I can actually enjoy the flavor and I love them.
You have just earned a new sub. You set an example for other doctors to follow sir.
Thanx, I’ve been curious about this topic for a while…..great video!!!
Does anybody know whether it matters where canned seafood is distributed/packed? I keep hearing to avoid seafood from parts of Asia like Thailand, Vietnam, or China because of lax regulations, and I often see countries outside of the US labeled on a lot of cans, but I can’t find any information on this.
Just ate 2 cans. I’m good now. I like how they come with the spine and all the internals in tact. I used to avoid eating the skin, now I seek it.
Chunk Light tuna is very low in mercury; albacore tuna is very high.
Is it absolutely awful to eat canned fish in oil? I’m trying to understand how it takes away from the benefit of the omegas in the fish? Isn’t it just adding calories and extra oil, but not taking away from what the tuna, salmon or Sardines naturally have?
Extra virgin olive oil would be a healthy oil. You should eat it every day.

This is tremendous, thank you! I’m looking into eating way more fish. My Russian roomate works as a mover, all he eats is fish, potatoes, tea, vegetables and pasta. And he’s built like a brick outhouse! I dont even think he lifts as all! Just diet and manual labour.
King Oscar in extra virgin olive oil is top of the charts. In water it’s bland.
On keto I don’t imagine you’d have to worry so much about the ‘high calories’ in mackerel, since it’s hormones [such as insulin] that cause bodyfat accumulation… basically the more fructose-loaded, i.e. the more ‘sugary’ something is, or the more refined starch it has, the more it’s going to spike insulin and cause weight gain.
i sprinkle my sardines with a little hot sauce, mayo or avocado, and lemon. i also mash em all up because the look of the scales and bones freak me out. the i make some sushi rice… i place a few nori sheets on the bottom, then mix the rice with the sardines and FIREEEE oh and a little coconi=ut liquid aminos too
Years ago I read that with canned fish in water, much of the nutrient leaches out into the water and is squeezed out when the water is drained. Not so with fish packed in oil. If true, might it not be best to buy fish packed in extra virgin olive oil, and pick out the fish from the can, then discarding most of the oil? Does this make sense? With salmon packed without extra water or oil, so much the better. Would love other’s opinions, particularly Thomas’s, if he is still monitoring this video, for which I thank him. Oh, and yeah for anchovies. They add depth of flavor to soups, stews and other dishes.
I have read that farm raised oysters are raised in the same waters that wild oysters are, farm raised are kept in cages, the diet is the same as wild, do you know anything different
I consume a lot of tinned salmon is boneless & skinless really that bad? or just not as good as it would be if it had bones/skin? Asking because I really don’t care for seeing or feeling the bones even though they are soft.
Good advice, great video. I love my sardines but… don’t forget to eat herring as well (also relatively low in mercury)
It’s much more rich in a substance called phosphatidylserine. A very important yet rare phospholipid which is important for brain function. Strongly correlated with a healthy cheerful mood.
One serving of oysters has 6 mg of carbohydrates, I would say that’s low compared to most fruits or starchy vegetables
Sardines, can actually be about 60 different varieties of small, oily fish that are canned and commercialized as sardines, herring is sometimes canned and commercialized as sardines. I like my tuna, or sardine, on French or bolillo, with 1 egg white omelette, I eat this around 4:00 am daily, and this will hold me (No hungry) until around 5:00pm. I prefer tuna on water, sardines on water, but just sometimes on olive oil with peppercorn.
Great info! Great energy! Please stop moving back and forth, it’s distracting. Keep making great videos!
I love this guy.He giggles a lot. LOL I just ate a can of King Oscar Tiny Tots sardines BTW.
So you’re saying extra virgin olive oil in canned fish is bad? Then why do others say olive oil is one of the world’s best and healthy oil?
Why did you play the LOUD, STUPID music in competition with the otherwise excellent information? Instructional video should have NO Music. It is always distracting.
Dr Berg. I am confused about something. I had bad kidney stones after eating too many veggies. So I went low oxalate and started eating lots of sardines. Now I see people listing sardines in the moderate oxalates lists. Can you explain or comment if this accurate to avoid them if you suffer from calcium oxalate kidney stones or is this for people with other kinds of stones?
I prefer the oil version, the water cans smell awful. I just get rid of the oil… Problem solved..
Hey Doc north atlantic or pacific sardines, which wild caught are more healthier?
Buyer Beware: Any fish from farming in especially ASIAN countries……no thank you. So Dangerously Poluted. Raised in a tolet of sick fish, ponds full of carsingenes, antibioteics., and you name it. Plus the origin of the toxic feed source. Google it. I wish the author had noted this and origin of where the fish come from as well as the process locations. Saying this, it’s hard to find fish, from other countries. We need a list. Much is tied to China, yuk
I raise my own and process myself. Our family loves fish.
Hey Thomas which one you recommend King Oscar or wild planet sardines?
Beware of added salt. If you eat in moderation you should be fine. 1-2 cans is about 6-8 hundred milligrams of sodium. That’s about 1/3 of your daily recommended sodium intake.
In German super markets I cannot find any canned oysters. I can find cockles but they have a different nutritional profile. Could anybody list a few shellfish types that have similar benefits to oysters? Thanks in advance.
Sardines from Italy? Are you kidding us?
Sardines are Morocco Mauritian
Sardines are suppose to be eaten grilled.
It sure is healthier than your steroids, chemical prots and mass gainers.
Great video! Funny thing about sardines is you love them or absolutely hate them (nobody thinks they are “OK”). You’re either in out out. I’m in so deep, if I was fishing for sardines, I would have to cast my nets towards the surface of the water. What I like best about watching these videos is knowing there are others like me who also love sardines. Great video! Well done.
Thanks for the video! I definitely eat some sardines. Why do you prefer spring water over olive oil?
Geez some of these recipes in the comments are typical fat American recipes. Would you like any sardines with your sodium injected fat?
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals are another source of chemical contamination (plastic pollution)
The label on the can wouldn’t lie, or they’re in big trouble!
Question. Can we eat the bone in the sardines without removing them when fried fresh (not off the can)? I mean is the bone soft enough?
Thank you. How about the mercury levels, some say that it’s high
4 cans a day, I had to give up red meat, and sardines is a great source of protein
And loaded with vitamin D, which many people don’t get enough of.
Is sardines in oil good? Cant find any brand of sardines in water in my place.
Yum just had the best sardine sandwich hot with onions organic black pepper thyme and jerk sauce oh how I could eat another but I do t bc it’s 2am
Mussels not mentioned? high in iron, zinc and B12. Great for protein but low in fat (that’s why you add the butter to fresh but canned mussels are also yum).
Sardines are my shxxt!!
Add tomato sauce, chopped onions, chopped serrano peppers, lime juice and salt bomb
I also eat sardines in spring water, every day for lunch. I have them straight from the tin with a salad and hot jacket potato. I eat evey day at 1.30pm.
Dinner is at 7 to 8 pm. I have 1 slice toast wuth mushrooms and sliced bell peppers, fried and put on top of 1 toast. For breakfast, i have a smoothie with diet protein powder, 1 small banana 1 advocado. Blend altogether with water, not milk or milk substitute and voila.
Thats what i eat in a day. Ev ery single day.
i love the fishiness taste, thats how i can eat pussy every night!
Tom, I don’t follow you on your mackerel ranking, it is the most nutritionally dense and lowest mercury with only 260 calories in a tub. Could you please elaborate why you ranked it 5th.
Hello Justin, I wrote in the search engine ‘eating pilchards often’ and you came up. I wanted to ask, are sardines and pilchards the same family?
Hello Dr. Eric Berg
There is a small error in your calculations. For the sardines you have some amount of DHA and EPA per 85 gram and for the tuna you have some amount of DHA and EPA per 56 gram.
You have to normalize it before you can compare them relatively.
Sardines:
DHA 788 mg/85 g = 9.27 mg/g
EPA 742 mg/85 g = 8.73 mg/g
Tuna:
DHA 57 mg/56 g = 1.02 mg/g
EPA 41 mg/56 g = 0.73 mg/g
Canned sardines have 9 times higher DHA and 12 times higher EPA content than canned tuna.
I’m assuming it cost a fair bit to ask the lab’ to do that so fair play to you for doing it and admitting you were wrong a rare thing these days, it seems.
Love them, with lemon and pepper on a whole wheat crackers…. but have too have low sodium.. lol..
He literally said zero about the health benefits of sardines.
Avoid the smoked oysters from China. I will not do any fish in water.
I love them all, and just bought some. YuM. Thanks Dr, you are amazing.
Sardines on hand! And Sardines on Deck! You won me with that line
I notice I great difference in my moods when I eat canned sardines.
So, don’t even bother going to some expensive seafood restaurant. Just get a can of sardines and some potato chips. Besides, think of how much money you’ll have left over for scratch-off tickets.
Sardine sandwich with provolone and mayonnaise is all i need
People make fun of me for eating sardines. Oh well. They’re rich in Omega 3’s. Good for my heart and brain. 😉
Hello doc
Thank you very much for what u give
I need to know if sardeen was with soya oil should i wash it pefor eat?
Dr. Berg and Trump are the only 2 people I’ve ever heard admit they were wrong about something.
I mainly try to get them in water, or at least in mustard or hot sauce. Then I later add organic olive oil to them, add a bit of salt and cayenne. I almost never eat them from the tin, and instead dump them into a bowl. I mainly do this because I find the sharp edges of the opened tin, low-key distracting, like I’m going to scrape my [metal] fork on the edge, or that I’m going to do the same when using a plastic fork, and whittle of plastic shavings into the ‘dines…
I eat mine on a Subway Veggie Sub. With alittle Olive Garden italian dressing on it. Toasted. U dont even taste the fish. Usually a can per footlong!!
Oh wow I didn’t realize how LOADED sardines are with Omega 3s
Wow good to know this info. I love sardines but I never really ate the wild caught ones. I usually get them in tomatoe sauce. But I’ll try them on a bed of greens. Yessss!! Thanks Justin ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Respect for that correction, thank you. Will keep watching your fantastic channel.
Napoleon conquered most of Europe feeding his army primarily on canned Sardines caught off the coast of Portugal. They’re a superfood in a can.
Y’all go for it! I will throw up if I try it… I do omega 3 supplement gel caps and chia seeds but very informative. Happy for those who can eat them. Awesome job highlighting about heavy metals so true to be so careful even with Omegas about what fish are in them…I love Nordic Naturals.
That’s really good news, omega 3 helps for better lungs, thus the fight against the current corona virus, thanks for this video
How can i tell if the sardines are good or bad. Is there a certin quality. Or just buy any sardines
I am amazed by your videos and your honesty!!! Good work doctor!!!!!!
Does it matter if the canned tuna is light chunk or solid white?
Excellent attention to detail and follow up!!! Sardines rock….I eat three or four cans a week. And usually inexpensive compared to Salmon. People that sit around me at work dont appreciate the smell….they tell go eat in the cafeteria!!
I like sardines.I dint know there good for you nervous system.Good idea with spinish.
I love eating sardines I’m eating them now while I’m at Hong this video thanks dude
Great information love sardines I guess I’m on the right track. Awesome ‼️‼️
Can you send them back out to check for level of mercury? Which brand is the safest?
Thanks so much for verifying the information for yourself then updating us on your findings That’s good integrity
What about white crab meat? I ate some eatlier and was curious about it
You mention not to eat sardines in oil but do not explain why? Whats wrong with sardines in olive oil?
Sardine flavor is very sharp, but what ive found is fruits and anything with sugar and/or vinegar neutralizes the sharp flavor. This is why they are awesome with roasted baby tomatoes or sriracha.
Canned fish is such an underrated source of healthy protein and fat
Awesome info, but don’t get them in water. Omega-3s need to be in oil to preserve properly. You don’t have to eat them, you can even rinse before eating if you want, but preserving in water is not as effective.
I tried some anchovies and they were super salty. I had two cans but after that I gave the other one to my coworker because I thought that there’s no way this can be good for you.
I am almost return to Costco 150 tuna thanks for your honesty
i subscribed because i saw the comments and then heard what u said at the end about deleting and then updating info. that is really noble and u have a lot of integrity.
Pacific stock has collapsed. This guy is ignorant. Not only that, vitamin D is fat soluble, so if you drain out the oil you lose the vitamin. Double ignorant!!!
Thanks, I’ve been curious about this topic for a while…..great video!!!
This is the type of person you want to listen to. Willing to question and more importantly willing to have an open mind and change their opinion if new evidence shows otherwise.
in morocco we eat a lot of sardines and we call it “fish of the poor” because it’s the cheapest
The sardines and tuna you tested, were they in water or oil?
Yes, but did Dr. Berg absolutely make sure that the can of tuna had the same amount of fat in it as the amount in the sardines? Most brands of canned tuna are bereft of the fat. The fat is drained out or whatever, before canning, whereas canned sardines always — or almost always — keep the fat. I have a can of American Tuna in my hand, a brand that keeps the fat. This NET WT. 6OZ can of American Tuna has 4000–7000 mg’s of omega 3 per can. I’m not sure that Dr. Berg is comparing like with like.
9:20.
I wont forget that acronym
I always SMASH whenever I can.
Enjoy, 20-40 years all of the fish will have been fished. Then it’ll be farmed or nothing. There’s next to zero enforcement out there in the deep deep. What I saw turned me vegan. Get ready for soy tuna.
Im getting my sardines in olive oil though. Figured it was better…
Wow.. Those guys are packed with alot health benefits. Definitely learned a few things especially the selenium. I am not familiar with it but this would be my nugget of the day. Thanks JDS NOTE: Please know that they may not be workplace friendly to eat. Too funny…
I so appreciate that Dr. Berg continues to keep researching and testing things out for himself and keeps an open mind even if results turn out to be not what he expected. And of course passing on that information of his findings without bias.
Humorously speaking this black girl loves you for this information oh so much valuable information
Thank you for investing into testing this idea and sharing your results with us. It’s really helpful.
I just bought 5 canned Beach Cliff sardines in water. I eat it w squeezed lemon over Rice, an easy quick meal.
Happy to hear that, I eat canned sardines regularly. I try to get my nutrients from food.
Wow, I love Louisiana Hot Sauce Sardines. Mustard too. Never thought to grill them. Mmmm Glad to know they are good for you.
That’s a tun of omega 3s in 85 grams. Great ratio too! Nearly 1:1. That’s a single can of sardines and double the daily recommendation! (more is better)
I’ve started eating them regularly and have already felt quite a difference. More pep and energy.
