Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX Review (The Best Hiking Boots)
Video taken from the channel: Firearms of America
The Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX, winner of our coveted Editors’ Choice Award, can do it all. Saloman has crafted a midweight hiking model that builds upon the successes of their popular trail runners but remains exceptionally comfortable and supportive, providing the ankle stability that backpackers and hikers. The 4D 3 GTX is a nice blend of classic hiking boot styles and more modern techy trail running touches.
Compared to clunkier hikers, the 4Ds have a fitted, athletic look to them despite being high-top—a carry-over from Salomon’s trail. The Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX hiking boots will take your mind off your feet and onto the trail, and that’s what really good backpacking boots are supposed to do. Sure, these boots are supremely comfortable, but that alone doesn’t do them justice – these rugged Salomons are an absolute dream for serious backpackers.
When putting on the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX, it’s immediately apparent that this is a serious boot. The high collar and solid lacing system hold your foot and ankle snugly in place, but generous padding around the ankle and along the boot’s tongue make it very comfortable. The Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX’s are burly, big, and built to take you far under a heavy load. Yet these boots feel comfortable right out of the box and required a zero break-in period.
They’re also waterproof and feature a thoughtful lacing system that works well on steep incline and under stormy skies.Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX Women’s Review These boots are the ultimate in terms of durable, burly hiking boots; ankle support, water resistance, and durability are where these boots really shine Price: $230 List | $229.95 at Backcountry.Check great and honest reviews!

QUEST 4D 3 GTX QUEST 4D 3 GTX is all about walking comfort, with technologies to reduce fatigue over the duration of your treks. Light and cushioned with running shoe adapted technology, yet supportive enough for backpacking, this boot helps you get to the next camp site with happier feet. The Salomon Quest 4d 3 GTX Hiking Boots look like more of a high-performance walking boot than some of the more traditional looking options. There is a sporty feel with the snug shape of the upper, the high-rise padding and the style of the sole. There are also a few different colour combinations to choose from to add to that visual appeal.
This is basically an improved version of the Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX. The Quest 4D 3’s have a better, more aggressive tread with better grip. Hiking 10 mile stretches in the old boot would cause aching feet.
No aches in the version 3’s so far, possibly due to the redesigned tread. At the top of our list for men’s hiking boots are the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX.We found the Quest 4D 3 GTX successfully combined the versatility and functionality of trail running shoes that Salomon have become so well known for with the stability, comfort and support of a more traditional hiking shoe.. With high ankle collars, an easy-to-use lacing system and a 4D boot chassis, the Quest boots.
Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX Reviews Good-quality hiking boots don’t come at a cheap price, especially when you’re a hardcore trail runner. They will make a world of difference as you begin to take on tougher routes. Therefore, having a good pair of boots is always a priority for hikers.Published on Aug 6, 2018 This is a gear review of my Salomon Quest 4D GTX3 hiking boots.
I have owned several pairs of these boots and find.

Salomon Quest 4D vs Salomon Quest Prime comparison video: https://youtu.be/zEEfSbiaGQE
Great review. This is a really good boot. I’m on my third pair unfortunately due to warranty issues but Salomon has a good 2 year warranty so hold on to your receipt in case you need to take them back. Call Salomon if you have a problem. I did a 10 month, 500 mile YouTube review for those interested in long term information.
Excuse my ignorance. I’ve had these boots for a year and the tread is already worn down to nothing. What gives?
For well-researched reviews upon which to make an informed purchase decision, see “Top 5 Best Hiking Boots 2019” by Revisione or “Salomon Quest 4D GTX3” by Kevin Outdoors. The former uses substantive comparative analysis of other models and the latter is built upon years of first-hand hiking experience with earlier versions of this boot. This review is a perfect example of a useless review, all emotion and nothing objective, only the relentless use of “very”, “really”, “absolutely”, “extremely”, “fantastic”, “cool”, “nice”, “I like”, “a little bit” and best of all “sort of”. “They are only 640 grams, which is…..pretty good”. “The top part is what gives you the flexibility in the bottom part” yes, for any piece of footwear known to mankind. The functional test was 5 miles walking, 3 miles running, “and to just wear them” (?).
Way too long. One can have a full and complete review with 1/4 the time. What does it take? A script. So as far as reviews go, this one is not great.
Is it normal they get a kind of wrinkles on nubuck after a couple of uses? Mine got some at the external side after first outing (about 3h)…
If you had to pick only one, Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX or Salomon Quest 4D?
Hey, great video. I had a 2018 pair that leaked and had it replaced straight away, good service!
I noticed that the boots run quite small so maybe that’s worth mentioning?
but yes, these are great boots! I wish they still had the Forces Burro version, unfortunately that was discontinued…
ps: sharpen your knife for the next vid!
greetings from Belgium.
This is the best review of this boots that I’ve seen! Very detailed, very upclose. Answered all my questions. Well done sir!

Holly cow finally someone made this!!! FINALLLYYYYY!!! Thanks a lot for this!
Finally I’ve got my Quests! Thanks for review which helped me to choose the right boots
Sir plz reply are these boots are better then military Gormant tactical boots etc?? For mountain train
Hello. for waterproofing care should be used? Proof of fabrics and leather or Nubuck & Suede Proof
I bought these boots and they are the best I have ever had. 10/10
Though, I love Salomon’s & own a couple of them including this one I feel both Keen & Danner offer more bang for buck. Having trekked/hiked in different climatic conditions from Himalayan plains to Alpine slopes & Rockies with an average of 3500 miles a year over the last 20 + years (2200 of those miles per year actually out surveying the wilderness) I think for the price USD $230+ these boots are way too overpriced. Had a leading outdoor retailer not offered it to me for free try-out, no way could have I justified paying this price and get so little in return. There is nothing these boots can do that my Keen Summit County, Keen Targhee High Lace or even Danner Mountain 600 (200G) won’t. And the last mentioned also offers versatility of blending flawlessly in urban settings which surely these Salomon’s don’t. That said all three Keen Targhee High Lace, Danner Mountain 600 & Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX will serve well through three seasons (FallSpring) while Keen Summit County is strictly a Winter hiking boot.
These boots would have been an absolute steal in $125-$170 range that said, they are fabulously crafted. Form, Finish & Function is top notch but fit is where it gets a little finicky & leaves a lot to be desired. They seriously run narrow & I had to go one size up from 10.5 to 11.5 US.
For day hikes this boot is definitely an over kill. You don’t need these boots if you won’t be carrying 35+ pound of load on your back. It is sufficiently waterproofed, around 6.5 out of 10, but again for $230++ I was expecting much better waterproofing. They are well insulated but again not as well as Keen Summit County 400G or even Danner Mountain 600 (200G). So don’t even bother taking them or your winter trekking expedition to Alaska or Nunavut province of Canada. I had almost made that mistake luckily, my wife had my Keen Summit County securely tucked away in our van & that saved the day for me. Given Salomon’s narrow fit, let alone two, I can barely manage to slip into them with one pair thick merino wool sock. That makes tolerating sub-zero weather even more brutal. These boots will offer their absolute best between 13°F to 57°F anything under or over that temperature range & you are courting for misery. While Gor-tex surely does make this boot sufficiently waterproofed (65%) it does so at the cost of breathability. Once the temperature soars over 57°F, with every 4° rise in temperature your discomfort will rise 2X times for every 3.5 miles you traverse. I learnt that from the experiences shared by several of my patrons who have accompanied me on over four dozen trekking/hiking trips that I have guided & or, lead.
Finally, what makes paying $230++ even more ridiculous is, these boots are made in Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand) and their Customer Service Center in Barcelona, Spain is completely incompetent in resolving issues in a jiffy. You have to either call several times or your phones will go through many hands before your issue is addressed.
I’ve got to say it, hearing you talk about boots for “the ultimate survival situation”, with your accent, makes me think you belong in the game, “Escape from Tarkov”. Hahaha. No offense intended, it’s an awesome game. Great review by the way, I just ordered my first pair of these.
Great boots and nice V-ROD! I had a 2006 V-ROD and regret selling it for a FatBob
Great video
When will they offer them in Wide? They are just a bit narrow or I would have bought them already.
These boots are almost identical, I went with the Solomon quest. Very happy feet
Hello! Which hiking boots are actually waterproof? I work in hot humid weather and walk in wet grass most of the year. I can’t find any boots that are actually waterproof and comfortable for hot summer days. Any suggestions?
They look too narrow for my type of feet. I much prefer a more open toe area.
hope you didnt toss old boots, but donated to some who can still make use ; snapping fingers, first couple times, ok after a while = = =
BTW testing boots for water resistance, when theres no mention of what sort of regimen you follow (none?), isnt useful really
i love salomon and i have countless pairs, mostly in the “forces” coloring. be aware that salomon, at least for me, needs to be sized up one size. i usually wear 10.5, with salomon i have to go 11.5. i accidentally ordered just these quest in 10.5 and they were just to small to be comfortable. i’m out and about 4 season in montana.
$220+ for boots is steep for me! But I found these are on sale at Moosejaw.com right now for 174 US. Never bought from that site before, but I was able to pay with PayPal so that made me feel better lol thanks for the review!
I’m actually surprised that Salomon hasn’t changed their logo, considering it looks so much like sketchers.
Good review KO! I will be looking at a try-on of those to see if they fit. My Zamberlans are great for comfort and support, except the soles are way too slippery on wet rocks. I am hoping the Salomons are a better grip on the wet rocks.
These are also different versions. 1,2,3. Just bought 3. Awesome right out of the box. No break in needed.
Thanks for the review! Based on this review, I went and bought these boots (reluctantly moving away from HiTec). They are great, but a little stiff, i really need to wear them in, and flex them out a bit. They are also nice and warm… hopefull not too hot in summer. Thanks:) Ian
What is your experience in sizing? I wear a US10 in Nike and Saucony, usually a US9.5 in Clark’s. I ordered a 10 in these, had to buy online because everything is currently closed.
Have you been living in a shoe store lately to have so many boots/shoes available for all these reviews?
…just kidding.:-)
BR
If an old boot starts to leek because of damage around the area the sole connects to the leather. Apply some clear silicone from home depot and it will fix the leaking. Simple, cheap, effective
Dave Page, Cobbler will resole your boots for $100. I’ve had two of my ‘retired’ boots resoled, and he does a great job. One pair was an Asolo mid that is no longer offered, and the other a pair of Salomon Quest boots, the originals. I just thought I’d throw that out there in case you were interested in saving a little coin and ‘reviving’ those older boots.
Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX?
How are they for breathability and summer? I’m trying to find a replacement boot for the Columbia’s I got that are absolutely terrible for breathability. These have great reviews but no mention to breathability and some say its not good in the hotter months?
I just ordered my first pair of these. I wanted the Forces version, not only for the color, but for a few design improvements as well. Unfortunately, I had to go with the civilian model since I get an incredible LE/ Mil discount on the civilian models, but not on the Forces. Seems a bit backwards, but hey. Hahaha
Yes, it came to in my choice from no.6L size. How and where can I get it?i
Do you usually buy one size bigger to accommodate the thicker socks or sometimes multiple socks and the fact that feet swell a bit on long treks? Appreciate your feedback.
Just breaking mine in.
I’ve purchased them the other day and bought a size up (uk12)because iam a broad fitting size11. They’re great boots I’ve walked a couple of miles in them at the minute (iam still out).
I feel no fitigue; feet, ankles etc.
The most comfortable boot I have ever owned. My waterproof membrane only lasted 2 years and after 3 years the sole separated from the boot. But I will purchase again.
What an excellent review, thank you for fuelling my outdoor equipment geek requirements. Take it easy
Thanks, Kevin. How does your new pair differ from the previous model?
Salomon boots are as waterproof as sandals. Thats all that needs to be said about this brand
I owned this boots, for me they are a little on the heavy side and the insole does not provide much comfort. I ended up replacing the insole to get it to work. It does provide excellent grip and ankle support. It requires some break in period.
I just ordered the Quest in Black arrive between Sat and Tue very excited and order 0.5 higher hope thats enough!! thanks great reviews subbed
Cheers Kevin, got these today I love the way your just fucked your box off made me laugh. Good review
The review is spectacular, and you had me when you did the flick. Gosh darn that’s spectacular.
Best boots ever!!! Buy them as long as they are available!!! I just ordered my second pair
Jeez, You really murdered that plastic bag. What kind of knife have You’ve been using?
Just had to leave a comment. I like the snapping. It made the video fun and enjoyable. Welldone with the video as well.
Hi Kelvin,
You know that you might be outside the limited warranty offered by Salomon, however Gore-Tex themselves offer a lifetime warranty on the membrane. I would send the 2013 pair back to Gore-Tex and then you will have a new pair for if it happens again.
All the best champ
I’m in my second year of rocking these and I think they’re fantastic. A little rough out of the box but not much required to break them in. I live in Canada and i put them through the ringer this winter just to see what they can do. Pretty warm (as long as you keep moving) and pretty waterproof. I got them for humping heavy loads on long trails and they’re worth every penny. Grip well on ice and we have lots of that here.
Are they still rubbish for grip in slightly wet conditions? Click
Salomons are great, if you want a boot that has technology that sucks water INTO the boots. Id rather go barefoot than wear Salomons
Mine leaked from the side of the toe box on both boots had to return them. Btw this happened after 1 month of casual use.
You definitely do great reviews, Kevin, although my taste is towards the full gain military leather style. thanks for sharing
Need a new knife first seeing how long it took you to slice that bag open….
I’ve had a pair of Timberlands for 11 years, worn every day doing irrigation work 7 months out of the year. Mud, water, punching shovels into the red clay. The only thing wearing out are the soles. They’re still in good shape. Oiled once yearly
Useless waterproof test. What about when it’s raining and the water is coming from above?
Just bought a pair and they are more slippy on wet rocks / stones than my Merrel Moabs. I like them though, really comfy and waterproof. I stood in a river to test them.
I have two pairs of the 4D and I love them so much. But I find them more suitable for backpacking or rough terrain/technical hiking and too heavy & bulky for light/day hiking. Do you have a recommendation on which hiking shoe/boot is best for groomed trails?
anyone in here know if they run “true to size” or a bit narrow shorter or longer? Appreciate any feedback looking for a good pair of wknd hikers.
Hi Kevin, first of all thank you so much for making videos,,,,,your reviews are both awesome and helpful…sorry to be random but just a suggestion would love to see you doing travel and food videos.. thank you
Great review, Kevin. Solomon boots are always my choice, too! Did you ever use some insoles for your hiking boots? I started using recently Solestar Hiking insoles (some German brand) and they are completley new thing: stiff insoles that give fantastic stability. They are not like other soft cheap insoles.
What is your experience with insoles?
I need a pair of boot that doesn’t hurt the sole of my feet. I hunt and I hike around 3 miles per day. After a while my sole starts to hurt. In this case should I need stiff sole boots
They’re not good for harder hikes and trails. I managed to break two pairs already, hiking on Iceland and Svalbard. The Goretex is not really working for me either, feet are drenched after heavy rain.
HOWEVER, these are the only boots that fit me perfectly and are extremely comfortable.
Heyy kevin i have a big doubt about the durability of the sole of this shoe, i want to purchase the same but can you tell me as per you experience hows this shoes are performing specially the sole?????? Waiting for your reply
I like them but…wear them constantly but soles came unglued after 1.5 yrs.
Excellent job and I couldnt agree more. I’ve been wearing the same boots for almost 2.5 yrs now! I was planning a review on mine it seems you stole my thunder lol! Oh well always room on YT for 1 more review!?
Take care buddy, Wade
great review as always but i still don’t know if i want one of these or the X ultra 3 mid gtx and you like all of them!!!! I do more normal and rough day trails and probably need a slightly wider toe box
Great review, Kevin. Although I recently transitioned to trail runners, these are the best hiking boots I have ever owned. I bought my last pair about two years ago and have been very pleased with them, for all of the same reasons that you identified. Thanks for sharing your very-accurate assessment.
Just bought a pair of these and they ROCK. I need good ankle support and these boots are best for that. They almost feel like a ski boot. They mostly take ankles out of the equation, They are strong, extremely light, and they are a dream to hike in. Then I was reading “No Easy Day” about Seal Team 6 and UBL. The author, one of the seals on that mission, used these boots because he needed ankle support!!! so there’s that and I think that’s high praise, indeed, because those guys are exposed to the ultimate and they have their pick of any equipment on the planet. This is the toughest, lightest best supportive boot I’ve ever had on and I’ve been wearing boots like this for decades. My arthritic ankles never had it so good.
I do hope you may have chance to review on Crispi Boots, it will be good, for completing your review on gears, especially hunting, hiking, survival boots. Thanks.
I finally got my Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX, no wonder people can’t stop talking about them, they are so comfortable immediately out of the box…they actually feel like wearing your favourite slippers. I know a bit about boots because I’ve got quite a few of them, Merrell (3 pairs), Keen(3 pairs), Vasque (2 pairs), Diemme Roccia Vet Boot (1 pair, those were extremely expansive but oh so worthed), and now I’ve got Salomon and they do merrit the reputation they have indeed! Very comfortable, well made good quality, rugged but also classy, what more do you want from a pair of boot!
Think it’s too over rated in my book. The Ultra 3 GTX is good enough. The Merrell MOAB 2 mid gtx and Obos Sawtooth ii mid’s are also formidable, so does Columbia Redmond’s. Dry conditions are similar to all but the Obos in my book is a touch better in wet tocky traction. I may be wrong but my feet does the talking. The Quest 4’s is supremely comfortable no doubt. Lot’s of manufacturers are claiming the Goretex keeps your toes dry….well, if only you have your SealSkinz waterproof socks on, then it’s truly possible. Very obvious when you’re around Everest base camp 4
What a great review! How did you find the sizing works? I’m in a UK size 11 and some makes like merrell,I need a size 12.I’ve decided that these are the boots for me and would prefer to buy online.
Had mine 3 months needed no breaking in at all. As for waterproof no way. Waking in wet long grass today not water, and my feet got wet as. Gotta say I love them, but forget the waterproof story.
Here’s hoping that I get 3 years out of them as hike 10 mile most days of the week
Really like those boots. Gotta get a pair. My Columbia and Merrells always disappoint. You should sharpen the Spyderco though.
Why not Resoling them? or is it impossible if it’s not Vibram soles?
How often do you wear these boots? Do they last for a long time?
voice well not heard a few shots. would be useful for post-synchronization.
I’ve read too many reviews about these leaking after a very short time for me to consider buying these. I would say leakers are about 10% of reviewers comments. What’s the point of GTX boots if they leak that readily.
Damn, I love the boots… but I don’t think I can afford them… not anytime soon at least.
I was originally looking at Altra”s but I hike a lot of rocky terrain. Is the toe box on the Salomon very wide?
Great review. How are the sizes compared to other Salomons? I have the Salomon Alphacrosses for example. Should I just get the Quests in the same sizes? I know you reviewed the Alphacross as well. To bad you weight theme in ounces however. With your heavy accent I expected grams. You know. Like normal people…:)
Hi from Malaysia.. Awesome video, the 4D sole would be better in the mud.. i haven’t tried the X Ultra 3 Mid, love the sole.. it’s like a mid trail runner.
Nice and thorough. Was skeptical when I saw just the new boots in the beginning then you shut me up with bringing out all the older ones you’ve used.
Is it good for a long distance trail walk with a big backpack on my back?
would you recommend these boots for winter camping? Can you fit thick socks with them? I’m from Edmonton Alberta so its gotta be good against the cold.
Just what I’ve been looking for, have been trying to decide between the two for a while and this has helped me make my decision
What is your experience in sizing? I wear a US10 in Nike and Saucony, usually a US9.5 in Clark’s. I ordered a 10 in these, had to buy online because everything is currently closed.
Another excellent review my friend!
The 4d 2 has the same sole as the quest prime ones. I got the older version and the newer version as in this review 4d 3
Have you tried the Salomon XA forces?
Keep up the great videos
Was excited to see a review of these boots..::reads firearms of america and conservative outsider:: yeah, I’ll try somewhere else lol
