I can look under water without gollgels but I don’t know if I’ll be ok when I move under water without gollgels
Nice. Still the whole paddling in, while looking down the line thing is not so easy. Is it just practise, practise, practise?
been surfing 3 weeks and I can longboard pretty decent…But i want to short board but im struggling with nose diving before i popped up.I would love a vid on pop up on short boards
surfing since I was two this is very useful I am twelve right now and this video helped a lot in my last competition.
Could you show the transition from 1 to 2? Surf contest footage is great for this, but usually not realistic because the waves are perfect or overhead.
Your vid shows someone paddling towards something and then cuts to a steep angled takeoff.
Hey guys. I’ve been an anxious surfer for about 3 years. I add two extra paddles but then get stuck at the top and go over the falls so I get more and more anxious. I’d love any tips on how to get over my fear of bigger/steeper green waves!
This looks SO COOL! Def want to try. AlsoAnna looks BEAUTIFUL!
hey Ryan, great vid mate! keep them coming. Q: for the waves in around Adelaide (South and Mid Coast) the JR Wraptor seemed like a favourite of you both for a while. Did you guys had them in PU or EPS? Cheers!
this is the best instructional video I have ever seen. thank you.
Sorry, the title raises expectations („pro“) not being met in the video. It is rather beginner tips. And in my opinion, the steeper the wave, the easier you get into it/ the less strokes you need (on the same board).
my first time surfing was today, i caught 3 whitewaters. i cant wait to go back
Thanks 1 suggestion maybe get a drill instructor hat for when you things like
disgusting pushup and NO EXCUSES
You only used longboards and your waves are perfect, where is this
Hey how to rip, please can you teach me how to turn on a wave on a softop, I am struggling with this bit
As a 62-yr-old surfer, the hardest thing for me, and I hear from many other older surfers, is standing up! It’s like someone is pulling down on you when you start to stand, to the point where it takes a couple seconds after actually catching the wave to standup, which means you are then fighting against the speed and its effects on the motion of the board. Perhaps this is why SUPs appeal to older surfers; you’re already standing:)
Useful video thanks mate, what board are you on?
I’m trying to decide whether to get a 6’2 helium Spitfire 38l.
I’m on a 6’0 lib tech Shortround at the moment 34l but I want something that paddles a bit easier, can be pushed down the face better and I can surf from waist to overhead reef and points.
I wondered if this was the spitfire and if so how it holds in sizeable conditions?
Worth mentioning I get in once a fortnight and wear 6mm suit with boots and gloves much of the year (Northern England). I’m 5’9 72kg.
Key is paddling power and speed when needed, swimming a mile in a lap pool a couple times a week when your not surfing will help you do that.
And here I thought you two were two competing channels now it all makes sense
this is so useful it was my birthday and i got my fist hardboard
Very enjoyable video. We could probably see the upper body positions better if you…um…maybe lose the shirt?
would be great some advice on hand shape for more efficient paddling… thank you!!!
Thanks Kale I appreciate all your surf videos very good stuff! The biggest problem I have isn’t so much trying to repeat your great tips as it is competing with with anywhere from 10 to 20 people in Southern California for a wave, its hard to find decent uncrowded waves to work on these points. Thx again though for the vids, they have helped improve my surfing
Can you make a video on how to backside air? I surf on a left point and most videos that I have watched on how to air are all forehand. Also, the wave that I surf doesn’t have a lot of sections, so is it possible for me to do a cutback into an air?
I thought this was going to be a lot more technical advice, not beginner stuff
me: does duck diving every day in pool to get better
me: thinks it looks awesome an flawless
also me: watches this video and realizes how stupid i am
:l
so I know a lot about workouts. just by using Unflexal guide:)
So a small electric mounted board motor, is not out the question?
I started teaching an exercise in the early 90s called Clive’s Clock… almost identical to what Chris has added. If it wasn’t mis-pronounced a lot, it might have caught on earlier! lol
Woah this video helped alot. It’s my third day surfing and no joke already riding waves effortlessly now because I’m doing the extra strokes.
Hey big fan of the channel. Love the vids, thanks Would be cool to understand more about what to do with each part of the body and the thought process while doing each turn. Example I seen on another channel they mentioned while doing a cut back focus on glueing your chin to you shoulder while doing a cut back.
Really appreciate the work and effort put into the video!
I would very much like you to cover back footed surfing and front footed surfing
Anyone else never even been in the water in years but just looking for something to look forward to trying once quarantine is over?
Why am I watching this I’ve been surfing for 6 years and I can duck dive lmao
God damn. Where u surfing and how is there no one there cali beaches are soo crowded.
Love what you guys are doing! Wanted to reach out and see about a collaboration with our brand Ebb + Flo Balance. Let me know if you are interested and we can chat further.
learn to be a kook like you no thanks.your a total kooooook
Отлично показано.

Мне очень нравится как вы показываете.
Really stoked to see this Chris x MSW! Yeeeww!
Looking forward to more videos.
The blonde has a foundation mask. This is a makeup channel -shouldn’t makeup be on point?
I live in Hawaii and there is lots of coral… any tips on how to easily maneuver around them??
sound advice but the music tracks are too frequent and suck.
I loved this series, the way they were designed. I felt from here! Thanks!
This is without a doubt the most comprehensive and informative surfing video I have ever watched. Thank you
onya fella’s solid tips, will do my best to put it into practice..!
I love this I know how to surf but this is awesome for beginners also they r great waves
I live in Indiana, so no opportunity for this. AND I’ve never seen a beach/ocean. But maybe one day I can do this! It’s been a dream my whole life. Maybe one day..
This video completely explains why I was getting wiped out this morning. I even became a little frustrated, but I know my paddling is getting better. I even had a surfer yell at me for missing a good wave.
Good explanations backed up with specific technique applications.
thx for intro to Love Beans!!! as always, great vids shaka!
I surf for a long time but still make mistakes, 2 more strokes makes a huge difference!!
Which fins do you use on the JR Wraptor? And have you tried on quad? What would you recommend? I have a wraptor 5’10 fiberglass love the board but never rode on a quad
Cheers
best exercise for surf, surf. this dudes a goose, and a kook. stop trying to make money off the sport and please go teach this shit to tryhards else where. and learn to do a push up before you criticize u arse sticking out shit talker.
I think that the problem for beginner is more the placement too far from the peak. This is a problem every surfer has when getting out of his confort zone because of fear. So fear not and go to the peak.
Awesome! Please, go a step further e.g. fs and bs revs/air revs, ideal hand and body positioning to maximize torque during bottom turns…
What do you think the max volume is? I have a 6,3 with 45litre volume. Is this possible to duck dive?
I’m a big dude that misses short board surfing. Best board I ever had was a 6’6” pin tail thruster with near no rocker and wide tail middle and nose especially. Thinking of getting those specs. It was 85-89. What build of board would be best to float my heavy (but shrinking) butt? Epoxies, poly, hollow, etc.
thanks for the tips. the song is fire tho.. anyone know the title?
This video made even more sense after I tried surfing a few times. Now I see what I have been doing wrong and I was I was eating it so many times (I was catching the wave at stage C and wiping out from Huntington Beach’s big waves )
Great video. But the whole thing is in slow mo. Be good if they had a few at live speed. So you can see just how fast you need to pop up, paddle etc
Thanks guys! My sons are guaranteed to take the 2 extra strokes now that you’ve told them instead of me. Hahaha!
The first lesson before trying catch a wave is correct positioning on board. Not too forward not too back. To get the correct position on most boards from small to funboards, is using the length of your arm to tip of board. Extend your arm laying on board to the nose of board. You should be able to grab or touch nose tip of board. On small boards you should be able to grab the nose. On larger funboard or longboards you should touch the tip of nose..so play try this position. The paddling also becomes easier when you follow this advice on positioning on the board.
any tips on how to bring my body to my board (and not vice versa)?
I want to catch a blue wave like the ones in the video! Nice video!
I would love to see Cailey catching a wave using that poop pop
thanks however about ducking at about 6 feet… i need to within 3 feet and does it vary depending on where you are and how big waves are? thanks
Don’t grab the rail if you want to catch a real wave 😉 great workout:)
The video is simple and has a good sense, and the explanation is easy to understand, which will be helpful❣️
Thanks I make surfing videos I didn’t know anything about this video I learned a lot from this video
I appreciated this tutorials, see the possibilities! Thank’s!!!! xxxx
You’re only as young as the condition of your knees, and shoulders.
You’re only as young as your core, and glutes are strong.
Thank you thank you thank you very helpful very helpful very awesome very informative very thorough very clear very understandable very everything awesome thank you for sharing thank you for teaching much appreciated forever
This is the best duck dive video i’ve ever seen! Good job guys!
Love your videos! Pls make a video of how to read the waves and where to position ourselves in the wave accordingly.
This was very helpful! I just started my youtube channel about my journey from a beginner to an intermediate level surfer and I’m trying to learn how to duck dive. Thanks for the great tips:)
What’s the natural progression of choosing more advanced boards as one gets better especially after you’ve mastered the soft top? From start to finish, starting at a soft top and working all the way down to shortboard what is the natural progression and knowing when to go down to the next board and what the next board should be to go down to? If a person is willing to travel to better surfing locations and willing to put in the time and effort to become a short border are there any hacks to becoming a shortboard surfer sooner or faster? How do you find better waves that aren’t too advanced but are more challenging Kenmore Progressive then typical small shorebreak? Is having a surfboard shape for once local surf break a good idea or wasting money especially if you live somewhere where the waves are never open face never really left or right breaking waves? What kind of boards should a person have in there quiver so that they can surf around when the waves are small and bigger for their local surf break?
Curious how tall you are and what you weigh with the 5’2 Seaside. Looks super fun
my first time surfing was today, i caught 3 whitewaters. i cant wait to go back
I noticed that the main surfer is also lifting his lower legs when catching the wave. The video doesn’t mention it. This seems to be another way to shift your center of gravity forward. Thanks for making these videos.
Could you make hydrofoil surfing videos, my ability to catch waves is fairly limited to the conditions.
First to comment!:P I’ll watch this video with lot of attention cause sometimes I have people that ask me to teach them how to go from intermediate to advanced, and isn’t easy cause lots of time I don’t know how to teach the others about making new steps.
Barefoot Surf or any interested swimmer I have a couple questions about swimming.
One, I’m only a decent swimmer; I can swim in my own way, which works for me (so not technically the “correct” ways to swim), but only from a shore or shallow water area. I’m not ready to jump into deep water (so like from a cliff or boat) and depend on my only potential ability to swim back up to the surface. I always use lifejackets. Do you have any advice for me. Am I capable to swim back up if I can already swim straight in deep water? Jump down and come back up in seconds before I lose my air? If I shouldn’t, how about facial swimming gear to protect me as I try (or hopefully manage) to swim back up in time for air?
And two, there’s a harbor in my town, with a playground nearby, a big grass field, and a long cement port you can walk or bike on or jump into the water from. People are nearby, so if I wore a lifejacket to jump into the water, would that make me look silly to the witnesses? I wish I could say I was a kid or teenager, but I’m not. I’ve always been afraid of deep water.
Well done again KB, it’s such a feel process too, those little looks over the shoulder, positioning, feeling the energy of the wave, and knowing your abilities.
A really good video. I struggled for years trying to surf and this video would have been SO helpful. The other things that would have made a huge difference were a bigger board, as mentioned here, and being water fit, in other words a strong swimmer. I was talking to Peter Jones of PJ’s Surf Shop in South Wales about board size. He said “All my surfing life I’ve seen people trying to ride boards that were too small for them”. Wise words. I did eventually get water fit, training four times a week for masters swimming, but that was after my surfing years. How I wish it had been before those years.
Is it possible to open your eyes underwater in the ocean? It doesn’t hurt with the salt?
I got very comfortable at pumping on my front side and generating speed but most of the time I spend my wave pumping too much as I don’t feel like I can hit the lip or do carve easily without heaps of speed, but looking at you surfing makes me realise that you actually don’t go that fast on a wave and pump 1 or do in between manoeuvres haha I’ll have to try to commit to turns more!
I have helped several friends improve their wave catching by giving slightly contradictory advice to what was demonstrated here. I have told them that once they pick their wave, DO NOT look back over their shoulder. If you are new to surfing and struggling a bit to catch waves, then looking back screws up the mechanics, balance and power of your paddle. Sometimes just keeping your gaze and focus straight ahead can really help you. Besides, you will FEEL the swell rise up underneath you when it finally reaches you. This advice may help some people.
That do you get when you put Kales in a blender?
A real good green smoothie
Hey Ryan and Kale. What a blast these videos. Thanks for not only sharing the skills to learn, but also the passion of surfing. I am really progression on backside surfing, but am usually limited to tiny waves, where you have to pump (like on a smoothstar) to get enough speed to stay in the pocket. However, this is tricky to do backside. I feel like im not doing the motion as extended. Would you have any tips on this? Anyways thanks and rock on.
Anyone recommend the rob machado quad fins? Thinking of buying them but would like to gather some opinions
A good duck dive can feel so rewarding, like a successful maneuver, especially when you manage to join that downward and seaward energy under the wave.
should drop his butt more when doing pushups. hes not fully engaging the core
What you said about not being afraid to nose-dive blew my mind.
When you think about it, it’s one of the safest ways to bail: you will penetrate the water whilst keeping your head as far as possible from your surfboard (which is the most dangerous thing around unless you are surfing on a reef).
One thing I’d like to know: which side of the wave should the surfer observe before popping up?
The peak or the lower side (is it called ‘shoulder’?)?
I saw the professionals always look to the lower end just before they pop up.
Excuse me, can I use your illustration in my article? I’m writing a article to introduction surfing, and it’s not for profit.
is there anything you need to be aware of when duck diving on shallow reef?
BIGGEST RIP OFF FOR MORONS >>>>>I’m sure inventor made millions off all the MORONS
the big secret to catching waves that haven’t broken is a LONGBOARD wow thank you so much… I’m going to burn my short boards… as I didn’t think before!
this was a both information-wise and aesthetically satisfying video:)
Hey how do you turn into waves and shred on them while having a fun board 6’8 with a width of 8’11 and 41 liters. can you still shred on 3-6 foot waves in Florida that barely barrels? And what can I do to make the most out of it?
Thanks for this Awesome video..
I have a quick question, who does your video editing?
Where was this filmed??? This looks like actual paradise for rookie surfers and is just in general so beautiful!!!
In am a kitesurfer, not a surfer… Why am I watching this? Interesting tho.
I remember being totally unable to take off on a slab in the med. The wave was small but very very steep. As I am lazy, I’m always on late take off, thus popping up very fast is really much needed. Which is hard to do when you get older and don’t practice so much.
Also I need a fish for powerless waves.
So some very strong advices if you want to rip:
1) live close to the beach, or get a helicopter
2) train to pop up on the ground.
3) get a descent quiver.
4) make muscle, train your heart.
5) be young
6) imagine yourself surfing when you’re not.
I ‘m pretty sure all those conditions happen only once in a lifetime, i.e. when you’re a teenager. After that, we desperately try to get those conditions done again.
pretty great to see a surf video where the lessons are being demonstrated on regular, crumbly waves, wish more surf videos were like this!
Great Stuff! I had plateaued in my surfing for the past few years and I have been in PTA school for about a year now with the personal goal of finding techniques to improve my mobility and strength to be a better surfer. So when MSW sent out this email I was quick to put some of your dynamic strengthening and balance exercises into effect (just excluded the slack line). Within three weeks I have made noticeable gains in the water! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us and I’m looking forward to seeing more…Especially workouts designed for the legs with stability and balance as the focal point. Thanks again!
Is it weird I already do most of these and haven’t seen this
I can’t get my tail under water I don’t know if my board is to big for me or I’m doing something wrong im 4’10 90 pounds my board is like 6’1 34L
is that why?
Which board are you using in the video which brand and model of board
Hi, nice video, congrats! Could you pls share the dimensions of the board used in this video? Thanks in advance
Ein mega Spaß ♂️ Wenn du das Surfen liebst dann schau bei uns vorbei off.beach.com
I just realized ive never seen a surfer wearing goggles……rip eyeballs
I’ve a 8’ surfboard. Is it posible to ride steeper waves with it?
My dad tried to teach me to surf when I was a kid, but he wasn’t this good at explaining how to duck dive.
Wow thanks guys found this video very helpful. Subscribed keep up the great videos
Great video! Do you have a video on how to avoid other people? I’m half joking, but actually I am trying to learn right now, and I find other people the biggest barrier like if I see a wave coming I am excited to get ready and paddle into it, but there are 3 people surfing it and I don’t want to get in their way (Southern California, Malibu in particular)
New subscriber here. Lets share the love for our ocean giving us good waves. Come visit my channel.:) stay safe.
my god….. why people…..WHY…..may as well hire some children to throw salt water in your face while your at it
One thing I REALLY like from aussies is that they use metric system
Hey there, I got a question: What if I find myself as a beginner with a 7’4” board accidentally in the impact zone of 4-6 foot waves because I did a mistake for example, being on the wrong place at the wrong time. No time for paddling away anymore. What’s the right strategy for that kind of situation with a longer board? Do I get off the board asap? Thanks and greetings
Going to Costa Rica next week, will give it’ my best shot…thanks for tips, hopefully I’ll be hanging…Detroit
I’m starting surfing camp in two days. I don’t know if I’m goofy footed or not!
is it possible on a foam topped board? i thi k it was 8 or possibly 7 feet long and i have serious issues with just getting battered back time and time again
Don’t forget, most important thing about surfing is having fun. Not having fun, then why surf?
Watched a bunch of your guys videos for two weeks and finally bought a board and wetsuit to try to surf for the first time and could not land one wave on a 2-4 ft day. Gonna keep working on learning though cause it’s still fun.
im 6’3 and 168 lbs
my board is 6’6ft long
Do you think i can dive with it
2 meters before the wave? I guess were social distancing with waves too
When you really want to surf but you get seasick on the board
Thanks for this great vid. I’d like to see how to perform more advanced manoeuvres like floaters etc, body mechanics, back foot placement. Smooth start drills. More advanced tutorials
hello! So i am all new to this whole comunity, and i have some questions. i hope someone can help!
1. is it possible for me to learn surfing without a trainer and just videos?
2. i am 5’7, what board would be good for me?
3. if i try and catch my first wave on the beach, will the others laugh if i fail or laugh at the fact that i am a beginner?
4. is skateboarding similar to surfing?
thank you!
On a totally unrelated note, the tracks accompanying this video were golden too:D
Duck dive smaller waves: Difficulty Easy.
Duck dive big wave white water: Difficulty Boss mode
is there anything you need to be aware of when duck diving on shallow reef?
Good video, keep em comin. Heading out later today. I’m just learning and finally some smaller waves in store. Seems weird to say that, but, at my level, I need smaller waves. I go to a deserted beach that has been too big lately.
These videos are getting better and better! Okay, question about the wetsuits. When do people wear them and when do you not? I’m guessing you wear them when the sun is too intense in order protect your skin, or when the water is too cold, right? Do you ever feel like they affect or inhibit your ability to surf at all? Do you prefer surfing with or without the suit? (Sorry for all of the random and small questions!)
Hi guys!
I just purchased my first 5’10” surfboard and am having difficulties pooping up compared to on my 7’2″ could you guys do a short board pop up video?
Anyone know the name of the song that starts playing at 0:30?
When I’m trying to find a duck dive video this awesome video from the best surf channel comes up! Thanks!
I’ve been surfing for about a month in November and I don’t know DocDive, but I want to surf again after watching this video.
Thank you for a good video.
This effin rules, thank you for sharing. Implementing asap into my practice
Ive also noticed that beginners lay on their board too far back… they need to add that extra wait to the front of board before take off, not too much cause then you’ll nose dive
Been trying to get these down forever! This is much more in depth than most of the other videos I’ve seen. Thank you guys!
