This is exactly what I do, 14 weeks of dieting, at say 2000 cals avg per day, lost 35lbs, been adding 50 cals to my diet weekly, kept losing but getting to eat more. I will continue to do this until I gain a small amount of weight for 2 weeks. Ill thwn decrease cals by around 250 from my new maintenance and start losing again.

yes your metabolism goes down primarily NOT because of your eating style but because you aren’t carrying 100 pounds of extra blubber any more…..you need less calories because you way less. and you need less muscle because you weigh less….and I agree with about the “reverse dieting” gradual reintroduction…..good stuff, thanks!

I used to weight 330lbs., I was 230 as of 2.5 months ago. Stopped losing weight. I was eating 1100-1200. But the fat wouldn’t drop. So I kept rescuing calories. Nothing was working. I saw a nutritionist, and she told me I had my been eating enough. That the calories I need for weight loss are about 1850-2000 calories. I have been trying to eat that much. I’m scared to go on the scale. I just want to be 160ish pounds.

You brought the idea of metabolic adaptation just as I had lost 100lbs in 10 months. I have about 10lb of body fat I’d like to lose but I’ve spent the past couple months reverse dieting / breaking from the cut and I’m so happy I did. Staying at a constant 170 at around 2700 calories per day and I’m seeing some strength gains which is awesome. But I’m wondering how long until I could push again to get that last 10 off. Maybe I should focus on muscle growth for a few months? Like, how long does the repair take is what I’m wondering.

You don’t lose muscle from eating “bad quality” food. You lose it from restricting carbs and/or calories while working out at a high intensity. this often happens when people who are within a healthy weight range go all out at the gym in a fasted state. No hate, just wanted to point this out since I’ve learned about this in several of my college courses.
Thanks to your videos I am having a super successful cut. Last cut I ended up with my maintenance at around 2100 calories. Well now I’m cutting on 2250 calories and losing over 1% of my bodyweight a week. Plus I was already lean before I began. Just started week 6 and I’m upping my calories to get closer to the 1% mark. Doing almost no cardio and working out less but still maintaining strength. Feel great and I am starting a cycle of Core Nutritionals Hard, Load, and Alpha today. Your videos are gold.

I do the low carb trick! I’ve tried everything possible, and I used to count calories, but it became exhausting. I also became obsessed with the numbers, and definitely ate foods that were bad simply bc I could. Now I practice the low carb. The trick with low carb is replacing high carb foods (pasta, bread, pizza) with vegetables, nuts, or lean meats, just healthier foods. I also noticed that with this I eat less processed food. I simply try to avoid Frozen, Processed, and Packaged foods (I ask myself before I eat, does it avoid FPP?) I find that this has helped me amazingly! I feel better and I look better for sure. You’re tips are certainly helpful, and I hope people take your advice.

Hey Greg, what do you think of the 5:2 diet where you eat 600kcal for two non consecutive days out of the week and eat normal for the other 5 days.
How much of a deficit do you have to be in and for how long before you risk metabolic adaptation? Wondering if that might explain my fat loss being stalled. I am extremely careful tracking macros & calories and getting plenty of exercise.

I’ve had issues with controlling my appetite for a while. I know each product may have different results and effects, however for me nothing has worked as good. I have found Intermittent Fasting works wonderfully for me (I naturally am never hungry in the mornings, and I don’t like to stop to eat til the important work for the day is done usually first meal 4pm or later). My problem now is that actually, I am never hungry. Even after exercising…I just dont get hungry and I cant shovel the food down. I should actually be counting macros though.

Explain this to me real quick. I was 6’1 250, in a month I’m down to 225. I work out everyday. I eat a kinogenic diet. Ussually under 1500 calories a day.. Your video didn’t really make sense because calorie counting has nothing to do with food, it’s just counting so there’s no restrictions.. you’re just in a deficit & you stated in the beginning that you were still eating sweets… it’s science, calories in & calories out, that’s all. It’s not a diet, you’re just consuming less calories then you burn. The other comment abt nutrients again doesn’t make sense bc it’s not a diet, you can choose what you eat, it just needs to fit into your calories. If you feel you weren’t getting enough nutrients then that’s because you chose food that wasn’t filled with nutrition lol…
Very good points about being in a continuous ongoing calorie restriction of 800 calories a day. While ongoing continuous restriction like this can detrimental, short term is a different story. Valter Longo has published studies showing that a Fasting Mimicking Diet (highlighted in his book The Longevity Diet) of 800 calories for 5 days a month results in multiple heath benefits and upon re-feeding with regular calories again there ends up being no muscle loss according to what Valter Longo says has been demonstrated in the studies. The benefits Longo has achieved with his trials mimic many of the benefits of water fasting with no food but without some of the negatives that come with long water fasts, some health benefits that are not replicated with ongoing continuous calorie restriction. On the other hand Michael Mosley highlighted studies in the Blood Sugar Diet that were done in England of people who did 800 calories a day for 2 months and reversed their Type 2 diabetes which is good but don’t know if this negatively impacted their metabolism long term like it did with the Biggest Loser participants that was shown in that one study that was published. Plus studies have shown health benefits of doing 2 days a week of 500 to 800 calories and eating normal calories the rest of the week that Michael Mosley has cited in his 5 2 Diet book The Fast Diet and The Fast 800. Dorian Wilson covers a study in his YouTube video on “Fasting and Muscle” showing that short fasts with zero calories showed that of the weight lost, muscle loss was only 10% of this weight vs ongoing continuous moderate calorie restriction showed muscle loss amounted to 25% of the weight lost. Other studies have shown that some of this muscle loss can be mitigated with weight lifting & adequate protein.

Thanks for sharing your videos. I always enjoy watching them…super informative! I’m trying alternate day fasting and just finished my first week and have lost 3.5 lbs. I’m sure some is water but I’m super happy with this way of eating so far. I’m super clear headed and have more energy on the days I fast. On the days I eat I watch my calories but I don’t worry about it as I just fasted the day before. It’s getting easier each day.
i stopped watching when you said you were trying each diet for only 3 weeks. kudos to you for trying to be healthier and lose weight, definitely keep that up, but 3 weeks is not enough time to determine how effective a diet is just based on the fact that your water weight is going to fluctuate over that time. you could lose 3 lbs of fat and gain 5lbs of water weight and think that the diet wasnt effective despite the fact that your body composition has improved dramatically. not only that, but counting calories has a learning curve that takes most people more than 3 weeks to learn how to do well. it takes atleast 2 months to even figure out whether the tdee calculator gave you a number that is true to your actual tdee or not

I think counting calories can be a very powerful tool for not only losing weight but also eating healthy. I have learned so much about what foods are healthy by counting calories because I look at what those calories are made up of; am I getting protein, vitamins, will it keep me full? I love counting calories! It gives me the ability to make room for treats if I choose. I find it to be very nonrestrictive for that reason, I don’t have to cut anything out of my diet.

yeaa like on the 3 days i work out at home, i fast for 20-23 hours, on mondays i go into my home workout fasted and break it at 24 hours fasted, wednesdays and fridays i fast for 23 and a half hours max, i was skeptical that the muscle i gained and, the trap imbalance that i fixed was gona go away but your right i havent experienced an muscle loss, if anything for me it can help me gain size and strength

Good job you can do it! I would stick with calories since it’s working. I do calories too and eat a really big salad or two really big portions of veggies along (like 5-10 servings of veggies)with whatever other food I want. I lost 30 lbs over a really long time. I also think there is a lot to be said for liking your body no matter what. You’re beautiful and there are ton of beautiful body shapes. I can tell you what worked for me. I like calories because for me it seems less restrictive. I can pick whatever food within the calories if I randomly have a donut for breakfast it’s not the end of the world. I like to round to the hundreds, and then count and aim for 15 at the end of the day for 1500 to lose or 20/2000 to maintain. I just do it if I gain weight or start to lose weight. I can skip food if I get really stressed/anxiety so for me it also prevented under-eating in addition to overeating. I got a ten pound window where I am comfortable. I think you can do it with adding in meal planning too now that you got the calories thing down. I think there is an emotional aspect to eating so yoga may help. I found it helpful. I enjoy yoga videos from Yoga with Adriene. She’s awesome and has a ton of free content online.
Why do this 10 diet thing?? You already had success with calories. Just keep going with it! You can do it!! Changing your diet all the time will add to emotional troubles with eating. You don’t need a magic diet you need a long term change in how you think about food. Food is fuel. The amount of fuel you need for your body is however many calories…the best fuel is healthy food like whole grains, fruits and veggies…but if you need a donut or cookie here or there please do! Okay I am sorry but I hope your day is going fine. Good luck with everything! You can do it! I used to be a personal trainer and I had eating super disordered eating (binging, purging etc) so I understand, but I never feel like that anymore and I am not tempted to eat my feelings because I have good friends who listen to me and let me vent to them if I need. Guys, losing weight does not need to be hard (I used to feel it did). I’ll give you some advice right now. Look for a diet plan known as Fenoboci Diet Plan. Seriously, that course has changed my life. I probably should not even be talking about it cause I don’t want a bunch of other guys out there running the same “game” but whatever, I am just in a good mood today so I’ll share the wealth haha.
Low calorie diets, yes, even down to 1000 or so can be effective for people who are obese and those who will fall off any plan if they lose weight too slowly for their liking. There have been studies that show that patients whom are very overweight are actually able to sustain a low calorie diet to lose weight fast and then go on maintenance for their new body weight to keep it off.
I’ve lose 20 pounds in 2 and a half months eating 1000-1100 a day
I have 90+ to lose.
I did NOT lose anything on 1400-1500 calories I just shifted a pound or two for a month. it was insanely frustrating, specially since I’ve spent 10 years doing everything I can to lose weight and nothing but Keto worked, lost 20 in 6 months, which is still pretty low. Then immediately gained it back and more because I never changed my diet permanently as well as such slow loss is just disheartening when my male partner lost double that. Estrogen sucks. However i had my gall bladder removed (Thanks to the SAD diet years previous) and high fat is something my body no longer process.
Then I went to 1000 out of frustration and finally have consistent loss.
After this, I will go on a maintenance around 1500-1600 pretty much for the rest of my life, minus random days like holidays where I hopefully won’t have to care very much as well as exercise often.
I eat veggies, meat, potatoes and some fruit and sugar free ice cream because it’s decently low calorie.
I count all my food and log daily. I also take a multivitamin and iron supplement to make sure I get what I need, because yes, it is very hard to get everything you need, but health wise, losing weight is more important for me in particular.
I’m in a small group of people who mentally feel motivated by losing in a fast amount of time enough to sustain this for over a month. Nearly 3 months in, not stopping till I hit 130 or so, then I will shift my diet to a maintenance phase as well as serious muscle building. I will likely be doing this sometime in May of next year. It still will take me probably a year to lose the 1000 even on a low calorie diet. My body seems very resistant in general.
You should NOT do super low calorie if you just have 20 vanity pounds or heck, even 30. But if you are like me, in obese category, have tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked well or at all, talk to your doctor and see if it might be an option for you. You will lose some muscle and you will feel out of it for a while. Also, if you can lose at a higher calorie intake and the loss motivates you at the rate it goes DO THAT INSTEAD. My body seems to be a pain in the ass with this. It just would not lose at 1400 and even at 1100 I stall every once in a while because the body is not perfect and it does not care about calories per day, but overall.
EVERYTHING in MODERATION…that old adage goes a long way! It’s difficult for people living in the “NOW GENERATION” to put the breaks on.
That’s not to be confused with Tolle’s living in he NOW lifestyle/theory, btw.:)
How do you suggest we take action when trying to restore our metabolism from low caloric intake? Should I stop exercise and continue to increase my calories over a few weeks? When can I resume exercise?

I find counting calories helps me make much better food choices. I waste very few calories on junk food. I’d rather use my calories for something filling and satisfying. I’d rather use my calories for a boiled egg than a cookie.

Im an underwater. Reverse dieting slowly. Eat low numbers and train for hours. I cant lower my measurements in some places just yet. I train very hard as well. I am not gaining weight like I used to, I have lost 2 pounds. Liked my extra few calories too. I have hip 34.5 and hoping to cut that number, its small but its not as small as Id like. I cant wear certain styles. I am trying to prove to myself that I can go down a dress size as for 3 years I have been unable to lose body fat and keep it off. However I am a terrible sleeper and that is also relevant.
Hello. This is sort of related, but if someone does decide to do a reverse diet, reaches goal physical and metabolic, how do you maintain if the body adapts? If you just stick to the set calories won’t the body adapt?

I’ve been calorie counting for a month and it’s been working really well. Mainly the problem is I haven’t been sticking to it as well as I would like. I lost 14 pounds, but then I gained 4 pounds this weekend after going way over my calorie limit on Saturday. (But the food was amazing lol.) I think part of my problem was that I set my limit too low, basically a 700-800 deficit. I wasn’t super hungry all the time, but I got that way several times. This week I’m going to try a 500 calorie deficit and see if that helps.
Also, as for this diet being restrictive, I would say it is to an extent but not nearly as much as others I’ve tried. I did the south beach died for a couple of months in high school (14 years ago) and lost maybe 20 lbs or so, but I couldn’t stand that way of eating for long. I tried a few other things off and on over the years. But then the biggest thing was at the beginning of this year. I tried the Blood Type Diet for type A blood. I stuck to it maybe 85% for about three months before I quit. I lost 30 lbs total with very little yo-yoing. However, it was WAY too restrictive to be sustainable for me. Basically it was dairy and gluten free, semi-vegetarian, but with some meats like turkey, chicken and certain kinds of fish. However it had some weird restrictions, like no cabbage or bananas or tomatoes or potatoes, for a start. It was like I couldn’t follow vegetarian or vegan diets with the weird restrictions so it was really hard to find pre-made foods or eat at restaurants. I’m definitely liking counting calories.

I did the whole30 and learned a lot about food and what my body thrives on and doesn’t need, I lost some weight but i am now going to try calorie counting in order to lose more weight keeping in mind that whole foods are the the kinds of things I should focus on eating. So, this can’t be right, but can you explain the science/math to me? If fat can account for 75-90% of the body’s function, could an individual safely lean out for a week or two at 25% of their maintenance calories, if the calories came mostly from carbs?

Hey, not to try and sound stupid, but would in theory just making a full on protein diet, with as few fats and carbs would be good? I mean when your body needs protein, along with fats for energy, cant it just take the protein that you have ate instead of your muscle?

if you are taking in excess protein and zero carbs, the excess will be utilized as glucose and you will still “have enough” to preserve all (close to all) muscle tissue.
This is the problem with keto. they stress high fat, but need to increase protein as well to account for the functions that can not be carried out with fat energy

He was 6’0 tall and weighed 315lbs and I told he had to diet and lose weight. This is what he literally said, “Its not about losing weight, its about turning fat into muscle.” (PALM TO FACE) I wouldn’t even dare walk into my recruiter’s office in the shape in I was in. I busted my ass and went from 278lbs to 219lbs.

Crash diets only give overweight people a negative mental image of weight loss & a healthy lifestyle. I’ve seen it happen with my brother and mother every couple of years they go on gimmicky diets like veg-only, Atkins, juicing etc and end up fatter after 3 months.
Intermittent fasting worked for me. In early 2013 I had a 34″ waist, huge love handles and belly. Long-term healthy lifestyle changes have allowed me to have a 28″ waist with slight ab definition.
I’m now focussing on bulking up gradually, realistically and maintainably three words crash dieters love to ignore.

Would this apply if one is doing a Keto/Carnivore Diet, is in ketosis and still have a bunch of fat to lose? Doesn’t your body start feeding off the body fat to make up the difference in your caloric deficit? Get your protein for the day and keep fat low seems like it would allow your body to tap into the stored fat.

This is my 2nd video of yours so forgive me if you covered this but with you be trying keto? Recently I heard that insulin resistant people can’t possible lose stored body fat unless they significantly reduce their ‘bad’ carb intake such as grains and all processed carbs, and of course sugar. Their carbs should come from primarily veggies with some fruit. Is this true? Check out the many lectures that claim that 70% of our daily calorie intake should be coming from fat and 60% of those fats should be saturated fat. And the remainder 20% should come from carbs and protein. Apparently this way of eating fixes the satiation mechanics of the body. You should make a video on this topic since this philosophy of eating is getting increasingly popular.

my problem is my job.. i start work at 6am.. up at 5;30 usually take in some oats and 4-5 egg whites 1 whole egg.. i do alot of walking and lifting at work for about 4-6 hours.. i work for sanitation.. i eat about 3-4 meals a day.. usually chicken veggies salads… steak.. some fish.. along with multi vitamin fishoil… my calories are fairly low.. my weight hasnt changed in about 2 months.. ive experimented with lowering and increasing certain macros and still no change.. please help!

Why do u drink Coffee while fasting/ empty stomach. I’ve heard it’s unhealthy. What’s your opinion?
Anyone tried the Proladox Diet Plan (google it)? I have heard some unbelivable things about it and my work buddy lost crazy amounts of weight with it.
This mirrors my experience exactly. I went on a cutting diet of 1200 kcal per day for about 10 weeks. When I hit my target weight, I went straight into a bulking diet and just started piling bodyfat back on. So I spent a couple of weeks cutting back down to my target weight, then started upping my daily intake by 100 kcal each week. I’m now back up to 1600 kcal per day, and despite that extra energy and less cardio, I’ve pretty much maintained my weight.
Would you say a guy whos 5’5 170 should wear a small? 170 at 10% bf

You are absolutely correct, in an effort to keep this vid concise I actually failed to mention that the 12+ hour period while glycogen is BEING emptied (not fully emptied yet) gluconeogenesis is occurring. I think this small error and poor wording (glycogen is BEING empited not glycogen`s emptied) have caused people to assume that this means IF doesn`t work…I never said this! IF is a viable dieting method. Thank YOU for keeping the discussion focused brother.
