Thanks for this helpful information. Your video helped me ensure I was in top form for my first event! I placed 13 out of 39 in a field sprint to the finish! Just about the most fun you can have on two wheels!
If you can do it along with friends, it would be funnier than alone.
Your videos are so well done! Thanks! How do you setup a cam on your bike?
tаke a loоk at this, a lot ooof Cаaаash & Sсrоorееe here https://twitter.com/1808c09d3dcfdfed5/status/843728318495039488

gcn peeps, how can I start or join a race just for fun I love riding and I’ll love to see how I perform in a race I know there be faster people than.me but I’ll like to join one
Here’s a new video on the Hoka One One Clifton 3s that are some of my favourite long distance runners for triathletes because they’ve got one of the smoothest rides of any runner I’ve tried https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euf1pIcfWO8
I’m trying to measure my dick on Tuesdays / Thursdays with the boys!
I’d love to know where this video was filmed. Looks like southern California, but i’m sure it isn’t.
Ok. I just registered for my first race. The LSP Grand Prix on the 26th in Baton Rouge, LA.
Want to do my first race which would be an a4, 20 mins +3 laps. I have no idea in general what the average speed would be around at this level and I’m really curious to know to gauge if I’m fit enough, would 35kph sound right any ideas?
I entered my first ironman70.3 and I’ve never done a tri hahah oh god
great video, thank you, I want to get signed up now for race 1 (even though its December and winter’s coming in Scotland)
Racing is fun especially with friends because it makes it that much more competitive even in a completion, really wish my dh bike didn’t get stolen because I was looking forward to racing at farmer johns soon.
What does GCN think about racing once a week/ 2 weeks for about 2-3 months?
Hi GCN, I really enjoy your video’s, it really helpt me to get better but, do you guys can make a video about how you can train the best for just getting bettter. I am on a moment that i don’t really get better, i don’t really know what to do, and I thought maybe you guys can give me some tips! Oh and keep the good work up! you’re guys are amazing!
Is Simon riding lastys bike still or did he get his own. It’s a thing of beauty.
If you can do a chainy then you’ve good legs to ride a race competitively!
Dude, awesome video. You covered so many important points with ease. Sharing it with the nubs now. ✌️
My first triathlon is in 2 days and i’ve enjoyed all of your videos i’ve seen. Very informative. Thanks! 500 yards/12 miles/3 miles
I stopped 3 mins to make this suggestion Research endurance athletes on Keto there are plenty to read about. Zach Bitter for example holds ultra running world records on a Keto based diet. Training your body to burn fat instead of carbs for energy makes a HUGE difference in how you feel on long ride days. Zach has done a few podcasts with Joe Rogan you can check out as well.
Just know there will be a transition period where you WILL feel like you have less energy research it and maybe give it a shot for at least 3-6 months to really know how you feel about it.
The need for excess “snacks” disappears on a low carb diet you’ll find you simply dont need it. I went from goos and waffles and post ride shakes to nothing in 3 months on Keto. My rides were places like Dupont in NC for up to 3-4 hours no snacks and no crashing post ride like I used to. The energy just seemed to never go away. It was steady but subtle. It was weird but a very positive experience compared to the typical carb snacks that have a tendency to upset stomachs etc.
Hey guys I love the tips. But I defiantly think that you should stick with giving tips on cycling and never on spelling ( you spelt endurance as indurance)
Oh yes really needed this, with my first race coming up and already having a couple companies i know sponsoring me I’ve been feeling the pressure, nothing better than a guide to clear the fog
Fairly big update for anyone new to seeing this YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci5DrmUXEFo
Hi GCN, I would love to see an episode on managing fatigue during hard training for an event; like are those HRV apps any good, how do professionals manage they’re fatigue? Love the videos btw.
Is that Neil’s kid? Good looking little man. Hope to see him grow riding world cups!
lol where are the GYM sessions…?You get better in the road for sure..but doing a proper gym routine would help A LOT!
simon is by way the coolest gcn presenter, with matt and dan wearing the ugly kask protone and simon choosing the cool kask infinity
Unfortunately; I feel 65 is too frickin old but my mind says do it. So; for now I’m watching every video I see on the subject.
After all; when I started rodeo I was already 34. I quit at age 43.
I’m still an active commercial diver and this biking thing is haunting me.
I gotta practice falling and crashing a few times and see how I end up. I figure if I get over the fear of crashing I should do fairly well.
I can’t burn out in over training so; any advice? I already bought a used hardtail bike.
Do you ever practice crashing in specific spots or terrain to get through that aspect of down hill?
Because I know it’s coming so why not be good at it?
I’ve been riding road bikes since November 2014, I did my first sportive 2 weeks ago and finished 12 overall out of 476:)
Chuffed to bits yippee
Again good video… just humble and motivating to “Just do it” attitude… Need more people in the world like this… You may fail, but at least you put yourself out there to do!!!!!!!
go to motorsportsreg.com start with car control clinic, there you will have instructor who will be happy to answer your questions, and give you the basics of high performance driving, before you ever set tire to racetrack.
I did my first road race yesterday I had a lot of fun but I wish I made good on my promise to come in top 10 I made it in top 30 I need more training and less back pain I had back pain when the attacks started any advice on what could’ve made my back hurt so much
I want to start racing but i have one major issue. How do I know if i’m ready to race at 40-45 km/h for 120km? I don’t want to be dropped halfway because I can’t keep up the pace. So is there some sort of test I can do to see if I’m ready?
I just released a new video called “24 Hour Triathlon Nutrition Plan for Beginners” peep it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrLsMf7WuCQ
you guys ever heard of alley cat racing anyone in Melbourne or Geelong know of any
Man, the footage of the Hubaplooza race brought back the whole..”Hey where is the stage timer..guess I can take a nap” fiasco. Was my first full year of racing too, great tips here!
Awesome content. When u speak of places to ride in tho, i think u should be a aware of something what few americans seem to be; not everyone on the internet is from us. Just a thought if you’d like to expand your audience (and mb even use some metric system along side of ur miles).
nice video. i would like to see a video like this for first race on MTB
I thought this was a video for beginner triat….. er… wait, it is!!! Thanks for the wonderful information!! Im running my first Olympic tomorrow!:)
Definitely did 3 or 4 of these in my first tri… Definitely agree with you!
Thanks for posting this VC, I’ve signed up to my first season of racing, first race in six weeks. I’ll keep your good advice in mind. Was hoping to hang at the back but having 2nd thoughts about this strategy now! Basically expecting to go “out the back-door” early enough. But like you say I’ll build on that and keep coming back. You post some great informative content on all aspects of cycling, loved your sprint & olympic Tri vids in particular!
we want to know how to increase our ftp and how to increase our indurance
The one bag comment as simple as it seems, is key. I got about 10 miles in the car on the way to the race before I realized I forgot my helmet.
Thing is…How to decide if you are actually are ready for a race????
Gcn, chould you please make a video about EDDY MERCKX because, as you might know, his 70.birthday is at 17. June? Plaese give me an answer.
Say like a train on a cyclocross bike I have a robot but it’s not put together but I’ve been riding my cyclocross bike please give me some information thank you
Since I don’t hear any motorbike coming from the video, I’m gona assume you guys have a tandem filming you, after all it’s Global CYCLING Network!
did my first community race the other weekend, met some cool people had fun and realized i need to step my game up in every aspect. ur vids help a lot cheers from a fellow vegan.
Just raced my first crit last week but only watched this video today, some great home truths but very motivating!
Love your videos!
First crit sucked. 5 laps in good position and someone’s race number got stuck in my front fork. Tried using my and fingers and feet but didn’t work. The i lost so much power and couldn’t keep up with the pace which resulted me falling back behind and getting lapped.
Signed up for first enduro
Ate shit on the part everyone was watching
I like fig newtons. They come in 2 packs at 7-11 and they have some power in them. Oh yeah, and they’re cheap.
I committed the cardinal sin at VLM on Sunday by wearing brand new, out of the box trainers.
My old trainers had done a ridiculous amount of miles so I weighed up the pros & cons and just chanced it.
Don’t try this at home, kids.
Dude if i use chainring 52t can i survive in my 1st crit? Thx
Excited and nervous for my first comp. Hoping to really start next year so trying to up my ride times this year. I always find eating before i go riding the worst. I’m not much of a breakfast eater and hate having to get something down before going a monster ride
@ 8:20 yeah but my local races are Downieville and Northstar EWS. FML lol
I just came here since I got bated by a friend to race in a crit
Did my first race on gravel. Rode out with the second group feeling strong as hell, then I got a flat. Haven’t changed one in over 5 years and needed a hand to patch it up hah. They were sure to give me a hard time but it was all in good fun and I finished! He’s right just do it, it’s fun as hell
Got my first race in a couple of weeks. This has been extremely helpful! Thanks!
THANKS for the advise! It was scary racing forward but because I took your advise I was able to get shelter and stick to the pack and not get dropped!
Been putting and putting it off. Watching YouTube videos and blogs and I thought I’d dig back into your videos. First 30 seconds, just do it, book it. That’s it I did it and I have no idea what I was worried about. Had a great time and smashed it to be fair. Looking forward to more
If you are training with full on racers at their race pace training rides, and not being dropped, you can race. If you are being dropped, you will also be dropped at a race. You might have a personality and fitness level just on the margins where the excitement of race day is just enough that you somehow muster the effort for a pack finish…but that is rare. Really you know in training if you are ready or not. If you are training with a local touring group at 18 to 19moh over a route where the steep hills were avoided and doing 49 to 60 miles…that’s a regular bog standard hobbyist ride that is insufficient. If you are hitting 3 minute 6 percent hills and doing 22-24 mph pace avg anyway, then you are mire in the racer range, if you can handle that, go race. Racer rides are every bit as fun as a race you pay for….and they are way more common too. I wish I had found racer rides years ago. It is all I do now, love them.
I sign up for races early because otherwise the price increases if you sign up later
My friend is now a pro. He said that in his first ever race he finished “dead butt naked last.” He said that when he finished, the organizers were packing things up. Lol
This would have been great if this video came out 1 month ago because 2 weeks ago, I had my first race. I crashed on the first lap and lost 20 places but in the end. I came 33rd out of 70, so I’m pretty happy with that. Thanks to all you guys at GMBN for making this possible for me. Mountain biking has changed my life and I want to thank you all
You didn’t really explain anything about warming up on the day of the race. Is that something you could talk about in another video?
@vegancyclist started to truly train for races until I got hit by a car. Bike was cracked and I need wrist surgery. Thinking about getting a caad12 in fear of crashing and losing another bike. Any thoughts?
VC, i weigh 100kg, i know that puts me at a disadvantage already, but i can spin fast, got strong legs and I’m wondering if i would just look silly at a crit race when I’m much bigger than everyone else? I would love to race but dont want to embarrass myself
Dude…im wacthing all of your Videos
Hey man im just 15 years old and in our city there is always weekly crit race i want to race too but there paced is too high like 30mph/50kmph. How can i sustained that speed
Someone should do a count of what happens more: Matt mentioning his national road race championship or Dan mentioning his riding for the Cervelo test team.
Im about to do my first 95km ride in a race bro!! Im so excited
Love it!!! Now really looking forward to my first race (fixed gear crit) ever!
Did my first race in a while last weekend and came 2nd I’m my age category
Great channel and really useful info man:) First track day in my Z4 Coupe back in March and loved it, will be better informed next time after watching this!
I don’t comment a lot on YouTube… but tomorrow is my first crit in 10 years… got dropped and never raced again…. this inspired me
I was thinking of trying a new pair of shoes on race day. Do you think that’s a good idea…?
I did my first race, got dropped. 10 races, all dropped. A year of races, all dropped. 2 years, 3 years, all dropped.
Just do it. Sure. Problem was I was with a former racing development team that had devolved into a social club. They were very misleading in that their group rides were simply not really race training.
Here is my advice, o point in guessing how you will do on race day, go to racer rides 2 to 3 times a week. 22 to 24 mph pace with hills. Ifs like a free race.
Well i’ve never done a race but I would like to in order to improve my riding and fitness
Bruh, I’ve been eyeballing Thursday nite crits here in Dallas and I get the bubbleguts just from the thought…but I’ve done road races and typically don’t get dropped but never finished on the podium. I want to do a crit just for the fun.
Was interesting until he said I’m gonna get dropped. Maybe you are chucky but I’ve been training to win.
Awesome vid! it is the 4th time I watch it.
How much will Zwift races help prepair you for a real race?
Regards from the guy whos first race is in 1 month.
I haven’t raced in 2 years….this is inspiring a comeback! Great vid.
I enjoyed your vid, easy to listen to & had me watching to the end I’m a eBiker & it has me thinking?? This is perfect for eBikes. I hate riding uphill ( old 54 & broken lol ) but with my new Levo I now don’t even think about the uphills, & just love the downs.
Do they have a category for eEnduro?
Thank you so much for this video dude!
It is so encouraging!
I’m fit, but in my first 2 races I did all I could do wrong and my spirits were low…then I watched this!
On to the next race!
with tiagra its not that expensive. Do u have a vidoe on how expensive is cycling?
Durning this video you mentioned the word or term drop or dropped can you explain really what you’re referring to.
Frozen smuckers uncrustables. Pbj thaw out through the stages amd are pretty welcomed tasty treat when tired. And I freeze a mixed electrolyte drink in a water bottle to let thaw out in a hot day.
Great tips as usual, Taren. Gearing up for my first Tri on 5/21. I’ve been slowly getting ready for this over the past 6 months or so, and I started at 320lbs, now down to 270 and finally in a Tri Suit that fits. Your tips have been great for my training and motivation. Thank you, and keep them coming!
Help…is an understatement… Especially the hulk calf muscle…and bike
New sub here. Love the channel. Been riding for a few years now. But recently purchased a new bike and have been taking this hobby more seriously with longer and harder rides. Haven’t participated in a race yet. But definitely a goal of mine. Anyways keep up the great content and take it easy
do you think im still able to race if im always working weekend mornings?
Im only been riding for 3 weeks. Am i ready for a race for my 4th week. 179lbs 5’5”?
Got my first race 3rd April. Its 40mins long and a circuit race
Training on a local circuit to prepare for it:)
Wow just came across this old school T-man trainiac video! AmAzing back then but you’ve come along way! Congrats
Was great to meet Anna on Sunday at the Coventry half, thanks for featuring on my video
Got my first race this Thursday in the UK…nervous as hell
Doing a practice race in the build up helps. A half marathon a few weeks before a full one, for example. Try out the pre-race/ post-race routine
he vegan, I’ve entered myself for my first race recently but I wish I’d come across this (amazing) video last year as I didn’t have much confidence in racing last year, so thanks so much. also what’s the music for your intro/ outro?
Does anybody do a warm up for their first race? Or will you just look like a tool…?
This was great! I’m a Cat 3 and am coming back after 3 year hiatus. I think you touched on a lot of very valuable points, even for somebody that’s been through it before. If I can be so bold, I’d suggest a repost for 2017 to highlight it again for newbies. Great work!
Great Video! Just don’t try to sign up for a race just 7 days before the race if you live in Europe, almost all are full at that time
a vegan cyclist what’s going on man I was wondering is that fruit covered kit going to be available again or is it available now I’d appreciate any help man thanks Ride Hard pedal fast
Precise and informative as always…
Can anyone tell me what’s the background music called?
I’m 13 and sorta hoping to enter a race, is there any races for my age group or would I have to wait till I’m at least 16?
how is racing expensive again. is it because of entree fees and stuff?
Bro ryan oakes and his crew are the slowest racers get out. Maybe these peeps in chico are just savage because it doesn’t snow?
Hi guys could someone please tell me what model Scott Dan is riding in this video,
Your videos have been very helpful preparing me technically, physically and mentally for my first triathalon in four days.:) Thank You.
Really nice video mate! My first race… arrived late, started on the back of the pack… lost the peloton and had to climb my way up facing the wind… of course, didn’t do much on the race…:-) But it was a great experience, and now I learned to put the alarm clock to beep 1h earlier…:-)
Great video guys. Got my second ever HM tomorrow and I totally sucked at my first. I started in my 10k pace and I crashed after 7 km. I have learned my lesson!
My first race is coming up soon and now i know what i need to do and bring
Everytime I used the toilet Tupperware I’ve always smelled and seen an absolute massive creamy curry. I always complain about cold but I get used to it and yes I have to smile naturally because nothing’s new on race day.
I will definitely use these tips as I would like to start doing some enduro races.
I really like CLIF bloks because there are many flavors to try and there are quite a few in each pack. Life hack: lick the bottom of one and stick it to your stem to eat later
Great stuff brother. 1 extra I would add would be to show up the day early to pre-ride the stages. Sometimes this is tough if travelling, but way worth the extra night or time.
Great video got my 1st track day in my own car next month and some of this stuff was really helpful
Funny how I’m watching this 5 hours after my first race…. it went great tho, finished in 16th place, I don’t really know how many people competed in the same race as me, but there’s 4 different races throughout the day and a total of 18000 people, so I’m pretty proud of myself tbh
Thank you for this. I’m training for my first race in April, this helps loads.
Always great videos although, after running a very good marathon in a new shoe out of the box ( brand and style ) last spring, I might not fully agree with the nothing new mantra:) Still valuable advice that should generally be followed ( I did have the benefit of being advised on the shoe and assessed by a very good team of running experts for several hours before they let me walk out of the store ). One point worth a mention is that it can be equally bad to run a long distance event on old shoes particularly if the cushioning/support is going. Good practice to start working in a new pair some time before and mixing them up a bit on training runs. It would be a shame to do several hundred miles of training only to find the cushioning/support starts to fade during the main event. Wishing everyone all the best in the busy spring fest ahead.
Really enjoyed the video. Thank you. I’ve just signed up for my first race. Nervous!
I have a race coming up next month…I’ll keep this in mind
You should have added pre race nutrition, about that you need to have carbohydrates the night before the race and drink 2-3 bottles of water also the night before and one before the race
Shoul’ve watched this video before… Did my first actual enduro race in Val d’Isere, and got a lot of problems with the bike and also the mind set. Ill take it in count next time
£30 to enter a race? I wish it was still that cheap. £70 for some PMBA entries now
Enduro racing sure is tough. During I’m always asking myself “why are you doing this??“, but when you push through and reach the finish line, it’s just such a rewarding feeling and the pain is forgotten pretty quickly 😉 I usually bring gels and Clif bars to eat. I eat something after every stage, even if I don’t feel hungry. I also bring some magnesium to help with cramps. I’ve seen some people start without ANY food or very little water, even on hot days, and relying only on feed zones, only to get there and find out that they might have nothing left. Bad idea! Another tip for the stages, don’t overdo it. I tend to push too much. A crash will make you lose more time than a paced, consistent run. And, I would definitely bring a spare tube, you never know. I strap it to my frame, good to go. I also always have a chain link fixed to one of the hoses with some tape, that way you’ll never forget it. Let’s hope we’ll see some racing at least later in the season…
Mistake of the week: Indurance ( 3:56) If that’s still a thing
Interesting video! I am a nutrition expert and every biker could improve their riding by changing the way they eat. You should focus on unprocessed food, high in protein, healthy fats for your hormones and carbohydrates for recovery. Talking about recovery: sleeping should be one of the most important thing for every mountainbiker. Aim for 8hrs per night. Supplement with vitamin d3, zinc, magnesium and fish oil.
Most amazing MTB experience I have ever had was an Enduro with two friends at Karkloof (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa)… We ended up starting late due to technical issues with one of the guys bikes, endured a gruelling 25km climb to stage 1 and had fun all the way up and all the way down! Came in stone last as the sun dipped below the horizon….next day.. Cascades. Broke my chainring on the up climb. Broke my ego on the down run.
I just want to say thanks for this video. As a relative beginner who is trying to get fit and start doing events of any kind on a regular basis there is a lot in this video to understand and think about that would have otherwise taken months if not years to be exposed to. Thanks!
Tacos, the key is taco’s. Not the easiest to transport just eat like 20 the night before with like 5 beers!
I’ve come full circle. Been watching your videos for a while training for my 1st tri, and here I am watching this older video getting pumped for my race tomorrow! Thanks for all the help!
nice video mate, maybe sometime this yeat i will race Enduro, great advices
heyy!! do u ever take a look on the one up edc tool?? a compact essecial pack thats packt away nicly and savet my…… on a view races last year
I really wanna like this vid but can’t take away that 699 likes from you
Think I’ve broken my fibula again, but, at least I can still watch you guys.:)
For me, the best thing is just…community! Whether with friends or strangers on those transitions, we are all there because we love riding and being out in nature. The MTB community is so welcoming and (mostly) non-judgemental, that’s what makes race day so rewarding for us non-podiumers!
first downhill race i did snapped my quick link on my first run not fun sliding down a soggy mud patch
What about if the trail is not marked so good, sometimes I’m trying to figure out how you knew what way to take, looks unmarked sometimes…
Getting ready for tomorrow my second race! Love tip 4 especially if the owner leaves T1 before you do. (With my first race spots where assigned anyway) but love your videos!!
Lol..i could cycle prettig fast before my first race. I could cycle 70 km and could keep my speed average between 37 and 40 continously. Did my first Easy level entry amateur race..and got dropped..
what are the average miles and vertical feet climbed in a race?
Yo GCN, ya link at the end for how to race in a bunch is wrong, it goes to ‘how to ride in a group’.
Going to be in my first Time Trial in a few years. Been training, eatin right, goin to the gym, working my abs (don’t need a basket ball hanging down….right?). What has been working for me is to take a few days off after some “intense” race practicing and then coming back focused, relaxed and doing surprisingly well on my next effort. Any insight you can share with me if different from what I’ve shared? My race is this coming Sunday. 20K. Feel good about it. Legs are in good shape. I know my bike and I know when to choose what gear and all that. Looking for a 30 -35 minute finish. Perhaps better when I get there…my focus is on my time verses winning or podium placement.
Appreciate your insights. Thanks!!
Dates, Skratch Labs Hydration, sugar water and H2o, is my go to race day nutrition.
#NothingNewOnRaceDay
Outstanding advice, thank you. I have entered #londonmarathon so fingers crossed it may be third time lucky if 2020 is a yes then I will definitely take these on-board #beinspired #spiritoflondon #thanksabillion #everybodysrace
3:56 Lasty spelt endurance indurance… Good thing you became a pro cyclist eh?
I put peanut butter and nutella sandwiches in my pockets. Best food Ive found for races for me.
That was awesome, thank you! Racing is fun and all, but…. I live very close to WV, and WV literally eats bikes!
I race extreme endurance (24h+ 100km+ ) and have been riding for 12 years. I find Christmas cake amazing fuel. Especially with icing. It provides fast and slow burn fuel that will fuel you for a good while. I go through around 5 Christmas cakes a year aha definitely give it a shot. Also active root, it’s a natural ginger based sports drink from Scotland, best drink I’ve ever tried. MUST HAVE! Bananas are great fuel too, generally I would try to avoid gels as they are super acidic, try Christmas cake instead:) also hummus and pitta is super tasty and kep your stomach just full enough. And peanut butter and jam sandwiches is a personal favourite. Hope that helps:D
Awesome tips! I was planning on doing some ESC enduros this year for the first time, but who knows now with everything that is going on… Hopefully I’ll still be able to do a couple. How necessary is it to have a hydration pack? Do most enduros have refuel stations to fill your water bottle between stages?
nice vid!
at the start of a stage do you just line up as you come or do you get in a specific order? because, at enduro races you have a specific starting time at every stage, right?
Hi
I’m worried about my triathlon
Cause I am 10 but I’m being put in the 11 12 category
FTP, Functional Threshold Power or the speed you can ride at 40 km’s, hmm I wonder what that meant?
@ 9:04 did someone say gushing blood? https://imgur.com/9ENVmEy thats from last weekend when I slipped a pedal at the start of my ride. At the end of the day my sock was filled with blood and I noticed the gash on my shin was about 1cm deep. The worst pedal slip I had was back in 92 when racing BMX. I got 13 stitches right below my kneecap. Goodtimes.
Fabulous video as always. The one piece of advice I have heard hundreds of times is the “nothing new on race day”. That is such excellent advice. I have tried different food and gels during my runs and thank goodness I heeded the advice because it would have ruined my races had I done it on that day. Rock on ladies and gents.
At bigger races, BME in the rockies and EWS races all have start times you need to make each stage. Training for the miles and elevation for the entire day or days is important. Again on big races you should be ready to pre-ride all stages in the day(s) before. So double the length of the race day(s) is what you need to prep for.
Great tips, I would like to try this one day, lots of training required yet though
Jesus christ I thought he’s laid down a bubbler/bong for the video intro. Quite a good info video from a small channel. Looking forward to 10 more tips n tricks for enduro a year from now.
How about comparison riding results between high profile wheelset and low profile wheelset. Advantageous and disadvantages of variouse profile wheelset.
In Italy in Enduro the lifts have set times, are you free to go down whenever you want?
A sexy lass ahead of me will keep me going, going and going..
Great and useful video for me.Thank you! I hope you can make more video like this. And I think the subtiles is very useful for me.
Improving my fat metabolism was a game-changer for me, it allows for more high octane carbs left for the stage. Burn fat mostly on the way up, burn carbs mostly on the stage.
Thanks entered my first enduro in September, was great fun. I found despite having good fitness and the ability to do long rides the stop start nature of enduro totally killed the tops of my legs, going cold not good especially when you’re 45 ♂️
hey taren, thanks for all the training motivation! kind of off question, but do you know what jacket youre wearing in this video? ive seen it in a few of your vids and it just looks too comfortable. keep up the awesome stuff!
All great tips. I would also add, HAVE FUN.
We all like to be competitive, but the likelyhood of you making top 3 let alone top 20 in your first couple of years or so of Enduro or any racing is slim to none. Always competing against solid veterans.
So just take your time to learn, take it all in. Make it fun, pace yourself. Progress, and before you know it you will be climbing those leader boards eventually.
For me when I did DH races a long time ago, late 90s it started out because my love of it. The traveling around eastern and central Canada ( local bike shop sponsored). Learning the craft. Making friends and contacts. Eventually, progressed where I was a threat to crack the top 5 regularly my last two seasons.
Unfortunately a crazy wipe out my last season, ended my compition days, but I never stopped riding my bike. Did some crosscountry and mild enduros in the last 10 years as well as multi day events. Just to spice things up. But I always keep it fun. Now more then ever since my 10 year old is heavily getting into riding.
What advice would you give to someone getting into racing? Leave your thoughts in the comments below
YouTube on top of recommendations since my 1st race is in 2 days
Commitment and that great things don’t come from your comfort zone
Great tips. I’d really like to do a race this year, but unfortunately southern Idaho apparently doesnt give a shit about having an Enduro series . I may do the NW cup downhill race at tamarack on my new Commencal Clash . Maybe I’ll need to find a used downhill fork to slap on it? Who knows, either way I’m doing my first race this year!
Still doing these? Here’s one mistake caught on a GCN vid: “Endurance” not “Indurance”. Cheers mate!
I have to say that these are some of the best videos I have seen. Super simple. Great advice. Not a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo.
What’s a good website to look for races? I can only ever find road races…. north east uk
Awesome video, question where did you get that coffee cup??
In x country racing, how do you go about getting around slower riders, or passing someone who might not want you to pass, on such narrow trails?
indurance, deliberate mistake, now send me my gcn shizzle. Gracias
Might be a stupid question, but you can enter on your own don’t need to be part of a club race team or something?
1st and I want to start downhill so this will help a lot so thank u
Join a club or at least get a bunch of like minded people together and prepare and train together. It’s always nice to start your first race with some people you know.
Neil. Why would you take tubeless sealant as well as inner tubes, surely you only need sealant if you already have a tubeless setup?
I think a great way to put some pressure on yourself is taking on the mindset that you only have one shot at everything you do. If you’re in the car park practicing manuals make every one count, if you’re on the trails and you’re gonna hit a section, do it like its your last shot at it. This helps the mental part so much and also the physical because you are focusing on every movement that you make. Then race day you just preform and react!!
This is my first time riding and wear cycle clothe. My question is where do i place my junk when wearing those tights tuck, left right?
Wow I think I have made all those mistakes, except missing bag drop, I wish I had not tried new things in race day as it destroyed my last marathon, however I am back stronger than last time & there will be nothing new in race day
Man I needed this video like a month ago for my first race. I was under prepared and bonked about 1/4 mile from the finish, but didn’t know I was so close. Had to sit down for a few minutes and could have finished it in that time. Not enough food! Thanks for posting this though.
If you want to push your skills like when timing a run you can also try filming yourself. I find this working especially well when I wanted to make an edit for social media. When the camera is on I find myself going way outside my comfortzone. Just note that with pushing your limits comes a lot of crashing:D

I am a Junior Triathlete on the WeTri Triathlon team. My first race of this season and first race training seriously with this team will be Wildflower next weekend as I was unable to race Half Moon Bay. Just wanted to say great tips as they were a good reminder of things to think about leading up to this race. Keep the videos coming cause they’re awesome and really informational. Thank you!
Thanks for advice. Not there yet but helps me for the future.
How do u sine up for enduro I race cross contry and wana switch
For XC racing, don’t go all out and blow all your energy in the first third of the race.
So if I’ve never raced before, but know I should be competing in Cat 2/3, should I start off in a lower category like Cat 5 to get more comfortable with racing before moving up? I also realize that racing in Cat 5 will give me a better chance of reaching the podium. 😉
I currently ride a giant escape 3, which is a hybrid commuter bike. It was just under 400 dollars and I was wondering (if the fitness and nutrition are there), how much of a disadvantage will i be racing against those with much more expensive road bikes? I ride a lot and really want to get into racing.
I am entering a super d race for the first time ever and do not no which category to join. I am decideing between junior beginner and junior expert. Anyone have advice for choosing the right category??
This guy won his first ever crit!
https://youtu.be/YZ7zYh24IAE
So…. nothing new on race day, right! As ever, great video, and really useful, thank-you.
Riding my first DH race pretty soon, so this is awesome timing!
Hi, Neil. Is it me or I´m mistaken, but I just watched your video and at 4:57 you were running with your back tire flat. Great video, by the way.
im just gonna pick my calculator and translate all these miles
Just enjoy it! I’ve been racing Jr xc for 2 seasons now and I’ve just gone in with the goal to improve. Biggest thing I learned is to get up from your crash and finish! In fact my first time on a trail ever was at my first race, I went otb on the practice lap and returned to our pit bloody and smiling. I have only gotten one podium at a smaller independent race. Just remember to have fun because that’s why we do this in the firs t place
Myself and my 11yr old daughter have entered the 4th round of the Scott mtb marathon series in September, we’re doing the mini (25k) route to see how it all goes, really looking forward to it and this video has just helped no end, thanks
GCN does great work and I love the entertainment!
This video about training for your first race seems to me that it would be exactly the same as if you were a Cat 1/2 or 3 training for your 100th race. No difference and it’s great advise. Newbies should know this is how the pros do it as well!
Let me add a tip for new racers. Know your max heart rate and train hard enough to hit it! If your not willing to go deep and to your limit you stand no chance in racing.
“Indurance” becomes “indurace” by the end of the video. Durr…
What’s the maximum tire size you recommend for a 30km race? I did my first race with 27.5+ tires 3.0 and i really felt like i was spending too much energy trying to keep up with people with 2.3 tires. Thanks!
Are you thinking of doing a video on racing in the time of corona? It might be more than helpful: a well thought-out argument could affect policy. You know, what is, what isn’t, what could be possible with a little tweaking. Not to put it on you, I’d just get a kick out of a neighbor influencing how events reopen. Think of all the times lately you’ve read or watched something and said,” that’s stupid, all you’d have to do is…”
You sure seem to have the chops. Maybe even the support.
Thanks for making joining a race seem less intimidating, either way. Petcho dog!
I have a question about the Air Fuel separator. I was told to put in a Porsche Motorsport one before doing a track day?
Raced my first bike race last week it was an xc race and i finished first in my category. Number one advice is do not panic stay calm throughout the entire race dont think your going to fast or to slow keep a level head and you will get results
Your videos are awesome. I believe your spare tire is a part of your front crumple zone. Thanks for all of your great videos.
Awesome tips. I’ll be doing my first Enduro this year and I’m super pumped but your tips are definitely gonna help
Good evening taren, just registered for austin Texas ironman this coming October. I noticed you mentioned if this is ” your first race you shouldn’t register for an ironman” sigh it’s half ironman. I have about 6 months and 15 days. So, I don’t know if I will be ready before then. But I’ll follow your videos as much as I can to be prepared. Thank you so much for your videos. Ps if you have any tips for me I would appreciate them. Thank you again
i really want to do a race around the whitby/scarborough area of yorkshire. Do you know any events in this area?
Your so under prepared Neil! I mean who can go to a race without an extra fork, wheel set, frame (in case you do a greg minnar), handlebar, cranks and also pedals. Honestly
You guys continue to add value to my running schedule, clip after clip…priceless advice as always.
Great video. I see rmm2424 stated to but track day insurance. I did a great deal of shopping around and found the best guys were Locktons or MORIS. I went with moris since they were friendly and the most competitive
:08 I literally clinched my jaw watching you fall right at that rock.
I really liked this video! So informative and inspiring…it almost got me motivated to ride an enduro race. If I had the right spouse/ boyfriend to encourage me (widowed)…then maybe, I would be down. And at pushing 53…I still have time nutrition and riding definitely is more challenging with the hellish cold and windLol
Oi! A bit more love for Matt, please! He is a Nationals Champion, and will always be. After all, Eddy Merckx will ALWAYS BE Eddy Merckx. And Matt Stevens is OUR Matt Stevens. Cheers!
If you’re new to triathlon and under if your training is set up properly you might dig this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM46lIoXehQ
I was dropped within 15 mins of my first race, but it’s ok, as I won my second and came third on my third race. Confidence is just as important as fitness.
Meanwhile, 1 year later.,..
Good advice as usual from both of you.
My routine; well, before Covid19 anyway.
Race day: Up and out of house ASAP no coffee…no breakfast…no thinking… no doubts. Google directions studied and downloaded
Arrive ridiculously early knowing where to park and when Costa….or Starbucks in an emergency (!)… opens. I’m not yet thinking about the run. I’ve already looked at course profile 1000 times since booking race 6 months previously.
Americano, glass of water and sticky bun for breakfast. People watch and browse internet.
Let the coffee and water perform their magic…..use coffee shop facilities (sic)!
Leave coffee shop. Think about run choose from 1 of the many plans for the race I have considered.
Try and look as though I know what I’m doing.
Vaguely warm up
Start line….Garmin ready?
Run!!!!
What happens when you have four races in one week? I raced the Tour of Cambridgeshire last Sunday, am doing a 1hr crit tonight, have a track pursuit and TT on Saturday and another 1hr crit on Sunday!
My First Race is on Sunday and I am really excited to start it off Well!!!! Thanks for the tips!!!
That’s great. I was so nervous my first race! Had a blast though!
Dude, I know this video is really old but where can I get this sweatshirt?:P
Sooo motivating. After watching this video, I can now see myself on the start line. Thanks.
I would say for your first race, don’t be to concerned with what others are doing around you. Don’t be constantly looking over your shoulder to see if someone is going to pass you if they are going too, they will vocalize it with you. Also remember, not everyone is out to get you! Races are fun and people are most of the time courteous to others, so don’t overload yourself worrying about the people around you. Just have fun and most importantly race at a good pace and tempo for you. Yes, its a race but, really work on improving skills that will truly help you in the long run. Be mindful of working on your corners, intervals, and sprints before you worry about time. Overall, have a great time! Races are not as intense and crazy as you think they are, go out and do one!
Thanks that was tiptastic! Any advice on TRAINING for the big day?
I just put out this video about the nuances of the triathlon distances, could be helpful to newbie triathletes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALLmBJrlMew
Thanks Taren! These tips helped me make my first triathlon a relatively smooth experience.
Would a more race oriented brake pad have any disadvantage on the road when compared to a standart one? Squeals? Maybe works it works better at higher temperatures?..
Anyway, great video, helped a lot!
New sub here….raced out of Visalia in the 90’s then moved to Oregon in 2000….GREAT video dude ✌️
I shudder every time I see indurance written! Does no-one at GCN know how to spell???
As much as group rides and fun rides are great, racing is definitely an awesome way to spot any areas of your riding that need work. Also can’t help but notice the flat rear tyre in the last clip
Awesome video guy’s
Don’t know if you guys did this already, but would be great to see your video on when, why and how to ride out of the saddle….
Thanks!!
Thanks for the important advice. I’ll be able to drive in 3.5 years and I’m already saving up for a 2020 Mustang GT Premium for probably $40,000. I’ve already started saving up, and I have capital since I’m about to invest in the stock market. Definitely going to put these words into mind.
The Olympics is coming up and you better believe that I created a video preview of who I think will win and who I think will be on the podium in Rio. Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbP1mFesMP0
I enjoyed the video. I didn’t notice any mention of what type of warm-up, if any, you do before a race. Could you share any ideas on that? Thanks.
Entering a race? Hmmm not sure at this stage. GCN inspired me to purchase a Cycling Victoria (Australia) Recreational licence in January. I’ve increased my riding (riding base miles 1 day per week) to almost 500km so far in 5 months. But at my age (almost 41) broken collarbones, etc is something I don’t need. I already carry the scars from my cricket career (3 missing teeth). With more training & bunch rides under my belt, I may upgrade to a Race licence in January next year. If they have a crusty old (middle-age) bastard category……..
At the end of this video, Matt is constantly looking back at Simon and Daniel to see if they are catching up. Obviously they’re not going. He’s Matt Stephens!
i just raced my second XC! I live in Durango, Colorado and some locals named Todd Wells and Ned Overend were there… I pretended to be fast but within 45 seconds or so they were out of my sight. But I saw them again when they lapped me on my second lap around, so it was awesome! Racing is really fun and everyone there is super supportive and excited just like you. I was dead last in my category but I don’t care, I would do it again in a heart beat!
This is something I need to check out, i’m trying to start racing next year
Can someone please make a song of Nothing New On Race Day!!!
2 weeks ago i lost my first ever race on a few centimeter’s, here’s a foto of that
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hsktrias/18123700919/in/album-72157651451684093/
but that was because my acceleration wasn’t good at all, how can I improve that?
( I am the one in the green jersey on the right, there were 2 guy’s ahead but they were dubbeled ). If my english is bad, I am from the Netherlands and only 13 so sorry for that 😉
And is there going to be a tour de suisse vid coming up as well
@globalcyclingnetwork Can you make a video of how to base a weekly training schedule to prepare for stage races, enter in top shape, etc. i know it is really complex theme, but i would really be thankful if you do something…
Ard Rock this year was my first race and I loved it, could’ve done more training but I’ve learnt for next time
I’m going through my first triathlon this year and man… I’m fucking nervous, haha. Thanks for the tips, keep going the good work. Cheers from Brazil.
