Hey, I’m trying to make up my mind about residency and I just wanted to know if any PGY / Med students /attendings or otherwise from large academic centers (Emory, Duke, Vandy, Penn, UPMC etc) could speak to what the residency is like there?
The main reason I ask is that my school‘s program is a smaller, less desirable one. I knew the hours would be bad, but the way the residents treat each other, the way the attendings treat the residents, and the way everyone treats the students is horrendous.
Students who’ve wanted their whole life to do surgery end up discouraged and don’t, residents have quit and been fired since I’ve been in med school, and everyone is completely miserable.
I don’t mind that the hours aren’t great for surgery, most residency hours are pretty bad regardless. But I’m curious if people at academic centers that the applicants actually wanted to go to, or are at least proud to be a part of, treat each other differently? Since our program is small and undesirable, I get the feeling most of them didn’t want to be here (save the ones with family/SOs/ties to this specific area) and everyone has a chip on their shoulder.
Sincerely, a confused rising M4. (I loved the OR more than any other part of the hospital, but the interactions outside of it were unbelievable)
