Pre-Ride Safety Inspection Before each ride, perform a safety check of your bicycle. This only needs to take a minute or two but will help prevent avoidable accidents. Check the tires for proper inflation (marked on the side of the tire).Follow these steps as part of your pre-ride preparation: Open and close the quick-release levers on your wheels to confirm that they’re tight. Move each wheel side to side to check for looseness.
Give each wheel a spin to see that it doesn’t wobble and that the rim doesn’t contact the brake pads at.DŌST Bikes highly recommends performing a pre-ride safety check upon assembly of a new bike and periodically during regular use of the bike. (Note: If you are unsure or unfamiliar with bike assembly or performing the checklist we recommend having a professional mechanic at a Local Bike Shop do the work for you.).Pre-Ride Bicycle Safety Inspection Checklist: Tires: Front and Rear. Inflate tires until firm.
Patch punctured tubes if flat. Beaks: Front and Rear. Align brake pads with wheel rims. Test brakes for stopping power.
Pedals: Left and Right. Spin pedals and crank arms to.If you would like some help with how its done go to goRide Essential Pre-ride Bike Safety Check and run through our simple instructions and don’t worry if you’re not a master mechanic the whole point of these routine checks is to catch things before they get too “big”. Low, level, snug & stable.Pre-Ride Electric Bike Inspection.
Even the most experienced cyclists need a period of adjustment as they transition to electric bikes for the first time. Not only does the electric motor change your acceleration curve, there are also new steps to take to ensure your bike is ready to hit the road.Ensure tires are inflated appropriately. They must be firm. Test brakes for stopping.
Ensure brake pads are not worn out (front and rear). Spin pedals and crank arms to ensure smooth rotation. Set angle and height of saddle, and ensure it is secure. While you may not ABSOLUTELY need to do the maintenance portion of the pre-ride checklist for cyclists with every ride you should always do the nutrition portion.
Your nutrition checklist should include: A breakfast sized correctly for your bike ride Pack a powerbar, energy bar, or other good mid-ride snack, one for each hour you’re riding.Comfort and Convenience. Padded shorts or tights. Wicking jersey or top.
Gloves. Saddle (underseat) bag. Patch kit (and/or spare tube or tubes) Lock. Watch or cycling computer.
Cell phone.Get into the routine of looking for the following things during a bike inspection: Do the lights and turn signals operate properly? Are the tires properly inflated and the tread good?
Are the wheel rims damaged? Are spokes loose or bent? If either is the case, don’t ride. Not only does this include the obvious such as tyres, but also items such as footrest rubbers and handlebar grips. Checking the tyres is not just about making sure that they are set at the correct pressure, but ensuring there is a Also check for signs of cracking or any foreign bodies, which.

Some of these checks can be done at home but a few require waiting until you arrive at your riding destination. Print it out or open on your smartphone or tablet as.
Give your bike some love. A good once over before every ride will not only make each journey better, but also make your components last longer! A quick two-minute once over of your bike pre-ride can protect you from no end of mischief, a miserable ride ending break down or even a serious tumble.
A pre-ride check every time we take the bike out, although undoubtedly the safest approach, might be a bit overkill, however, a simple – and fast – weekly inspection will go a long way into making sure you will always be riding your bike in its best form, but also into making sure you are riding the safest bike.

Thank you guys for your efforts. I was wondering whether you guys are planning to do “How to video” on DA 9000 front & rear hub adjustment. I watched Shimano Hub adjustment video but DA hub seems different. It is hard to find good videos to do this. Thank you again.
Great vid, 2 greasy thumbs, check them checks and remember to take off that lock! Scene a few of those mistakes!
hi I just subscribed, I admire the presentation method you have,
I just wanted to ask is a benzine product dosed into the fuel tank a good idea?
cheers Warren England
How old can you safely ride on a tire? What’s the recommendation on replacing tires that have 3k miles on them but over 6 years on the bike?
What oil temp gauge do you have installed on the Sportster? been looking for one.
Full-time development resolve rear significance demand ring aim drinking plot law.
Can you please just make all the videos I want to see on YouTube. In fact make your own YouTube, you can call it ForTube or something…. Awesome helpful vid as usual
Another great video. Extremely informative. Keep them coming!!
I wonder who does all these every time…until it breaks down….
What is the bike youre sitting on in the beginning of the video?
can you please do a video about chain guides or chain tensioners please!
Thanks
I am addicted to this channel i have watched all the the how tos in 2 days
Dan one thing about tire pressure; always check the bikes data tag or owners manual for that info. Sidewall tire pressure markings may differ from those recommended by the manufacturer. This especially true if Non OEM tires are fitted to the bike.
Topics: Bleeding the brakes.
Bulding a budget Trackbike.
Harley ran chains for a long time I just love it when these younger people haven’t experienced these things have had a chain lock up on me that was fun it’s a shame that they probably will never experience some of this stuff working on one along side the road at night just got rid of a hot rod wide glide that I was constantly working on and yes I bought a 15 deluxe with 500 miles on it yes getting tired of working on them but I have paid my dues been doing this for over 30 years now
Is the recommendation to check your bike before your ride before you get on the road from home? I don’t picture doing a quick check when I get back on the road from the gym, grocery store, or work.
My typical checkup:
Tire pressure
Lights
Did someone mess with my bike (refer to the very first mad max movie for an example)
90% of the bikes we get in, the rider complains about handling, check tires….. 15lbs or lower. What’s up with people? I like a comment you made one time about charging people for airing tires. Guess we might do that.
.55 that’s a caliper Dan not a cantilever, they where on MTB’s when you 1st started, on them 😉
Can u put a video on top 10 tips for begginer road cyclist? Pls xD
my bike tires recommend 80 psi n I put a little over 100 will this slow me down or make me faster?
Awesome video, love the acronym usage too. Used to be a medic so I don’t think I could forget DCAPBTLSTIC if I tried. So I’ll try my best to add this to better habits before my rides.

You guys have made the best youtube channel ever! Really, great job! I have lots of fun watching your videos. Congrats.
Get a slow rim leak. Then you’ll have a full 10-minute pre-ride check before every ride while you inflate your tyre!
Como puedo conseguir para mi bidón de global cycling network..porfavor…desde ya muchas gracias..excelentes los videos…
I have been watching your videos all day (mostly because I just got my new Street Glide and stuck at work and cant ride), but anyway, I run a safety and mentorship program where I am. I would love to talk to you via email and get your permission to use your videos as training aids. Anyway we can do this?
Off topic but what kind of helmet is it that you are you wearing in this video?
Useful tips cheers! What’s that rear rim all about by the valve? Looks like a chunk of metal missing?
I recently bought 98 Fatboy the gaskets are leaking on the rear cylinder rocker box.
Other than following the manual for taking a rocker box Off and replacing the gasket is there any special trick to it thank you much.
I’ve spent a whole evening watching as many videos as possible on this Channel. I’ve yet to find one that is not informative. Great job.
I’m torn between another ZX10R since I loved my 2014 and a 1299 base Panigale. Would be an every day driver in stop n go traffic on 405. Can you cover a video with the 1299?
In Japan, we use the “buta tou nenryou, tchi!” (the pig’s gazoline, f%&@!):
Bu (break)
Ta (taya: Wheel)
Tou (tomoshibi: lights, winker, break)
Nenryou (gazoline/oil: break liquid, gazoline level)
Tchi (chain)
Stay safe!:]
Mista John, great as always. How’s about a cleaning vid? Do’s and don’ts, best for your paint and chrome cleaners and cloth. Maybe huh?
Hi GCN, can you tell me, what kind of saddle you use in this Video? -> your videos are the best
You guys are excelent riders, how about a video on something we all take for granted but very few actually know how to do it…taking a corner PROPER on a motorcycle:) cheers J.
New rider here. Can I get some gear recommendations? I’m looking to spend up to about $400 on a jacket, up to about $200 on boots, & <$100 on gloves (already have a helmet, but I'll be replacing that when I can afford it). My bike's a 650 cruiser (if anyone's familiar with a Hyosung GV650, would that qualify as a "sport cruiser"?). I live in New Mexico, USA, so I don't necessarily need complete waterproofing, but I can also only afford one set of gear, so it all needs to be pretty all-around. I regularly spend anywhere from half an hour to a full hour on the highway each way, & I'm otherwise riding in the city.
this is great advice, I do all this but nothing works on my bike. HD are picking it up today I hope, indicators flash on their own turn themselves on & off so I took the bulbs out, neutral light doesn’t come on, throttle does not snap back, the bike starts up from just turning the ignition on? really bad noise when pulling clutch in, oil leak on the front jug, what else oh yea the rear brake disc needs replacing. Now can you see why I want you to come to the UK & work on my bike!!
Well done, I have gotten lazy and need to tighten up my routine. You’re a smart cookie thanks for sharing
1:05 “if you get a boner then your bike is not currently safe for the streets”
Everytime a pilot goes to fly a small plane there’s a checklist. It takes time. Same thing here. Thanks a lot! You rock!!!
Sir, I am indean bike mechanic.your country bike mechanic jobe
Maybe have a video of some motorcycle lingos and group rides. Always love watching y’all’s videos!
Would you do a video on being prepared for flat tires and tire repair kits?
Sir a pre-ride safety check for automatic scooter would be a great Idea, Im from the Philippines and theres a huge crowd who’s gonna appreciate it.
More power! Mc garage is the best!
Grand check list. Gotta say I don’t do even more than a quick walk around… will work this in, thanks.
And what a fantastic bass riff at the end, that tone kills.
sir do video on tips to long rides and primary modifation to bike d
Cage drivers saying ” I didn’t see you ” is an admission of guilt in my country (careless driving is the charge)…
Pre-ride checks are super important. I used to skip them all the time and I never noticed that my chain had popped off of my rear derailleur cog. Somehow I managed to ride it for 100+ miles like that and ruined the cogs, but somehow saved the RD and chain (though the chain could probably stand to be replaced soon now).
I’d like to add to check your mirrors. Not sure how it happened but I had a mirror come loose while riding. While it didn’t effect the bike mechanically, it was distracting and could have caused an accident.
Very helpful advice on the TCLOCKS check list John. Great job as usual. Your Brother of the road, Robert L Kerns-Columbus GA
Thanks. Great reminder to check your stuff. It gets overlooked all the time.
Help me please!!! I recently bought a 1982 Yamaha maxim 400xs dohc. Every time I try to start the motorcycle I have to connect the jumper cables and it usually starts but the motorcycle turns off as soon as I take the cables off or sometimes it stays running and after some time it dies. Do you think I need a new battery? Please help!!!
I think the last check should be the first.
Do the remaining ones as the bike warms up
My girl’s bike blows condensation out the cat until it’s warmed up.
you’ve done helmets so how about getting the right fit in one piece leathers?
Thanks a bunch!!! How about a video on progressive suspension, measuring and adjusting height, aswell picking the size for the bike,. Do you recommend adjusting height or just buy equal lenght shocks. Thanks Again Fantastic Videos!!
I HATE acronyms! Really hate them. They use them a lot in my profession, and really just can’t stand it. Every month it seems some bonehead is coming out with another one. And TCLOCKS and FINEC suck just as much imho. With that said, even a part time dumbass like me can remember ABCDEFG… at least some of the time. Now if I can just remember what the A stands for……
I was kinda hoping you would cover hot vs cold tire pressure check. Is it ok to fill tire to target psi while tires are completely cold? thx
My bike need to recharge the battery every time what is the problem
Any chance you guys could do a video telling us what to look for when buying a used mountain bike?
once when i riding my two stroke late at night i came back home and saw i lost my muffler XD
+1 for checking lights police pulled me over when my tail light was out, and somebody nearly took me out when my headlight had blown. if you ride at night it’s not worth the risk skipping these checks
Its actually DOES MATTER what type of bike you ride..Where its ridden and actually a shit ton other variables…If ANYONE NEEDS nfo m not watching and after 43 years old im not waisting an honest 41 years of experience I have on Every bike from Urals in St Petersburg,a Hawk in Beijing on to bikes my. phne wont let me keep posting more..i mde my point..a bike in China and the Ural took points and condeser!!
Amazing videos. Living and riding in Asia for three years there are only three checks that matter; horn, tire pressure, and check horn again.
Ive got an 05 xl1200c. I want to put those same apes and speedometer that you have but cant seem to find the speedometer. It looks like the same ones the 2018 iron 1200s have but not sure. Could you tell me where you got yours or shoot me a link. Thanks brother
And meanwhile, in real life, you HONESTLY do that every time?
Really?
I’m jealous John..I just noticed your Sportster has SILVER DIAMOND GRIPS AND PEGS!!!!..MY Sportster s got Willie g-s on it cause. Harley only makes the black diamond…so that’s what’s on my switchback..I don’t understand why Harley quit making the silver diamonds.I’m not a fan of the black diamond grips… that’s what they had..oh well yellow Sportsters ROCK!!!!
Hey John, just came across your channel a few days ago and binge-watched about 20 videos, great stuff. What turn signal relocation clamps are you rockin’ on your Sportster fork? I’m looking to do the same on my FXDC pretty soon and like the look you have. Thatnks for all the Harley goodness.
Never thought I’d like a yellow bike but that one is sweet. Love your content.
btwin triban 3 my first road bike, can recommend to anyone:) nice video as usual guys:D
Neil I thought you where all for flat pedals but I can’t help from notice that they are spd pedals on your bike has Mark managed you join the dark side:)
Really loving these garage videos, super handy information. I’m thinking a video about diagnosing problems would be nice. Right now I’m dealing with an electrical one, so maybe a video on diagnosing electrical problems?
Hi, great video as always. What is that white paint you used on the fasteners? Is it some kind of weatherproof automotive stuff?
You got my dream job. Im going into the Army as a wheeled vehical mechanic july 2nd to fund the MMI school. Going to take harley and honda classes, maybe even yamaha if i can. Wanted to be a motorcycle technician since i first sat on a bike. Definitely subscribing!
Expensive bike but nice bike. Renthal handlebars that you got there: 140euros:}
One on checking brake disc wear and pads and bleeding brakes.
There’s so many people riding around with decades old brake fluid and spongy brakes when it can be simply fixed for $10.
Ryan, which fasteners do you recommend checking and marking?
im glad i checked my tire last time there was a balloon coming out the side wall lol
Please make a video on how to check tire health as that is required by a lot of people.
You need to make more videos. I have already gone through all of your other ones. More, More, More!!!
Hey Ari I really love this MC garage series. We all knew you really know how to ride but you’re pretty damned mechanically inclined. Enough brown nosing… The more I research proper chain maintenance the more conflicting info I read. For example:
“no need to lube your chain because it is internally lubricated”
“never use WD40 to clean your chain because of fling and o-ring damage”
“only use WD40 to clean and lube”
“Only use kerosine to clean and product X lube”
And the list keeps going. So tell us, what’s your take on all of this?
Doe’s the BMW indicate a video review on the way, because I really want one.
I like to do a few of those post-ride. Frame, chain/driveline, steering gear, brakes, bolts…. I want to know after a ride so I can fix it before the next. Nothing sucks worse than a mechanical ride cancelation…. and isn’t it so tempting then to ignore a small issue, go anyway, and make the problem worse, and or get hurt in the process? Post-ride checks help prevent the temptation.
Great video! I would like to see a top ten garage essentials for motorcyclists.
Hi dan! Finaly i sell my Royal Enfield & Try a Sportster Roadster Friday:D! EXITED!!!!!!!!!!
I’m a new subscriber and I’ve been thinking hard on getting a bike for next year, wanted to thank you for these wonderful vids you’ve provided, they’ve helped educate me in things I didn;t know I didn’t know…great channel and excellent presentation:)
Good vids and good tips there! Good for any kind of pre ride check (commuting, road, off road…)
On a completely different subject though. I was wondering what kind of accent Neil has. Where does it come from?:)
I forgot my preride check and weekly check and my crank arm came off the spindle, a loose bolt fell out over a cobble area..
what’s the best upside down forks or normal forks can u tell me
You have a Harley. That’s not leaking oil. Your bike is just marking its territory.
Ari, how about break parts maintenance/replacement/check? I think that would be really useful.
I always enjoy your vidjas brother! I wish you continued success for you and yours. Keep up the good work!
yes on a bmw i would definitely do a check-not necessary on a suzuki. lol
Slightly missing my Triban 3. Sold mine after I inherited an ’06 Specialized Roubaix Comp. Would have made a perfect winter bike but the Specialized TriCross I put the money towards is more versatile.
I remember parking my bike in North Sydney Australia once and there was a bike and the chain was totally rusty. I was blown away, so deadly. chain and sprockets have got to be ruined. I’ve been riding a well maintained beemer for the last 4 years so I can be a bit smug about it. Same with a Harley. I’m a fan of belt drive.
I think you should do a video about after ride maintenance too ie after a wet ride cleaning and using something like wd40 on the chain. Saves getting a rusty chain.
You forgot that there should be movement in the front with the brake on as the pads move inside the calliper
I would be interested in a checklist for a 4000miles trip I’m about to start (across europe). On a Sport touring chain driven… I did this a wile ago but then I just bought the bike, this time around I have a 33000km 2005 old gal… I just put on new rubber but other than that nothing… stay safe
Hey man love the channel. The equipment reviews, **safety checks, things all riders should know…. All very insightful entertaining… well for bike geeks. Riding a well worn and often dropped 2007 klx these are rather important…..TY for it all….oh and we won’t hold being form Canada against you…. Could be worst….. there is barely any where to ride off road around here with out ridding half the day to get there.
hi can u explain the alloy wheel whether they are with different composition such as called aluminium and magnesium
4:37 FortNine you did it correctly the first time(center stand) yet at this timestamp you did not. You do not measure slack on the side stand. Otherwise, a good way of remembering what to check ABC… I learnt POWDERSS: Petrol, Oil, Water, Drive, Electrics, Rubber, Suspension and Stearing.
why do Fuel Injected bikes need atleast 2 litres of fuel in the tank?
Do correct me if I am wrong.
Kinda related to this..check your registration date..lol Don’t ask…
also good rule: Change the batt at least every 3yrs….
And if ya have it: the tool kit…Good Vid..Lots to work with..Oooh for got one: Give the spokes a looking over..might be loose or broken….cheers…
@*****, how about lubing your chain, measuring rotor thickness to make sure they are still good.
This is a great channel. Very well-presented, informative videos with an emphasis on safety. Great stuff, thank you.
How could anyone dislike a safety video? Someone is trying to help you and you don’t like it?
Thanks, John for your info and time. Trying to make the hwy a better and safer place to ride is awesome of you.
So I give you two big ole dirty thumbs up.
Could you do a video that explains all the reasons the red light on the speedometer comes on for
Tires gain pressure with heat. If they look low ride as fast and aggressively as possible to gain heat and therefore pressure. Also if you have a blow out you immediately crank the throttle all the way open so the centrifugal force of the tire spinning and the rubber being pushed outward keeps the bike up and you can ride on this new found cushion of gravity until you find a gas station where you can take a fist full of singles out and throw em at the fuckin disgusting animal behind the counter and demand it does its job before you put it down. Hope this helps any new riders out there. Be safe.
Ryan is definitely not Aussie. We do SBRM (she’ll be right mate) takes 2 seconds
A complete how-to waxing and lubing your bike’s chain……and how often it should be done, would really be nice
I love your sportster! I have a 2004 1200 XL. I love the style of that line of sporty.
@ 0:01
There are no engines…
What are you ready to ride with? Hopes & dreams?
(Fast & Furious 1 reference.)
No way!
Ignition On, Go!
The rest gives itself the first few min during warm up drive… never found my bike broke during the night. keep the thing maintained and you’ll have no problems.
I came here to watch motorcycle videos although I don’t have one but I also got what sounds like poetry and i’m certainly not complaining
Thanks for the video. I’m a motorcycle instructor and I teach something very similar.
I see you are using the KS LEV Integra, How did you overcome the cable housing issue? Was it hard with the nomad? I am buying a Nomad soon and I want that as my dropper but I heard to many horror stories saying to not use it.
i Really Like the kill Switch/Starter Botton on This Bike,That is Smart and Solve the problem of Try to Start your Bike while the Kill Switch pushed…that will fload your Carburator and make So Hard to Start even after you switch it…. Thank BMW
sir can u please make a video on repair of engine noise coming during lower rpm and even things needed during touring for motorcycle
Question on the battery. I have a 2015 Road King that I keep on a battery tender as well, but, every once in a while I notice it very weak to start, I hit the start switch and it seems to struggle but the bike starts. Its only 3 years old so what’s the basic Harley battery lifespan if there is such a thing.
The process for klr 650s is a bit different. First you start it up, then you push it over. After you pick it up you push it over on its other side. If it’s still running you’re good to go.
My pre check consists on kicking the tires (you will feel it if pressure is really low)…. anything else, I’ll find out as I ride. I trust my KLR mule. Too simple to fail in a way that’ll kill you… maybe.
Good advice but it’s time you get yourself a Japanese bike! The check-up takes 2″:-)
Awesome a Triban 3 with R500s and GP 4 seasons that’s my winter ride spec too! (Although I’m guessing it’s not your bike).
Great video. You could do an entire video on battery tender usage and it’s importance alone.
What if one spoke is a bit looser than the other spokes but the wheel is straight on my road bike?Do you need to service it then?
But when you see something wrong, you’ll still ride anyways and do with it.
Whats the name of that Tire gauge he is using. Im looking for a good one
Another great video-THANKS!!!
I noticed the oil level on my 2017 Ultra Limited was a quart low after sitting for the winter. No oil on the floor, so like you said, it had to go somewhere. I didn’t check it before I put it away, so I was a little worried that maybe I was burning oil or something.
Based on what you mentioned, is it better to check the oil when it’s hot? I usually checked it cold because it is thicker and easier to see. Also, is it OK to to mix synthetic with non-synthetic oil? In other words, if my dealership used regular oil, can I top off with synthetic?
This guy gives some really good info, i do not own a Harley as of yet I just retired and in shopping mode Street Glide Or Low rider, I subscribed to John’s channel
Thank’s John
I love that yellow sportster! I would love to know the year and name of it?
Pre-Ride Safety Check that makes you look like an idiot: horn check.:D
Seriously, if you don’t want to look like an idiot don’t do that one.:P
Video idea: loading and unloading a motorcycle on a pickup with standard ramps
Been off bikes for a while and now looking at getting one or two. Really appreciate the quick and no nonsense approach to bringing riders up to snuff on the ins and outs of keeping bikes happy. Watching topics I know well is a plus because it just confirms info from another perspective and tends to lend confidence in my own experience, plus I’m not having doubts about being up to date. Just watched the tire plugging video (I always liked ‘watching’ someone plug a tire) and the tool kit advice…..just wondering, could you do a video on how to stash your tools on bikes that aren’t really set up for that? I’m looking at a GSX S1000F and a DR 650.
Cool channel, about to check out some more of your videos! You could use smzeus. c o m to promote your channel.
I lost my shit when he made the lines with the white out! That’s awesome
Lol i did a 40 or so km trip non stop. Went to start the bike10 mins later and the engine siezes like snap
Mine goes like this. Check chest (jacket), butt(wallet), chest again(backpack), helmet for gloves and key. See that bike is still standing and chain is attached. Start bike. Rev bomb neighbors because they were fighting at 2am again, leave.
Can you make a about how hydraulic driven clutch system works?
please!! for daily rider to work for examble how to do that check Daily!!!?
Another good reason to clean the bike regularly. Gives a chance to get up nice and close and maybe notice anything out of place.
Another great vid by Ryan……common sense thoughts….such a rarity today
The other week I was riding and my saddle came so loose it rocked back and forth so I couldn’t sit on it, and my handle bars came so loose the brakes faced up to the sky so I couldn’t use them, they were all wonky and stuff. That was a k nightmare riding home
what do you do if you’ve got play in your front wheel? Is there a video for servicing your wheel hubs?
Old good red triban… I have had white for few weeks but it was downgrade from red specs so I returned it to Decathlon. Red was very good bike though.
Check tires, check brakes.
Good to go. I lube/clean chain every 500kms so that gets inspected anyway.
To start, I really enjoy your videos. I have an xsr900 and would like to be able to ride it off-road 20% of the time.
Loose dirt, hard dirt some mud.
What changes should I make to the bike?
GCN, could you please tell more about Btwin bikes? I live in Russia and it isa new brand for our bike market.
I watch your videos literally everyday! Always inspire me to bike, keep up the good work guys! C:
any advice on air pressure checker to buy online worldwide and not expensive?
Bro, I love your videos! Stumbled across them by accident while looking for Sport Glide videos. Yours was one of the decision making ones for BUY BUY BUY! Ever since, and I’m still waiting for my FLSB, I’ve been watching your stuff regardless of what I’m looking for. Keep the good work going! Greets from beautiful Croatia!
Loving the fact Dan is sporting an affordable Triban. Seriously folks don’t need an expensive bike to have fun… especially these days
But my bmx bike has no brakes and doesn’t have a quick release,
I really should do all that… it’s a great routine. Instead, I bought a TPMS, blue loctite’d everything that could be, and carry chain stuff with me. So my routine goes like this (and I admit Ryan’s is way better). Walk up to the bike, check the chain slack with a foot, walkaround looking for anything out of place, get on the bike and start going, during initial slow speed operation check air pressure and look for ‘normal’ suspension operation, listen for chain noise indicating I need to lube or adjust (do that next stop if needed). Once every 500-1000 miles add a sightglass check to see if I need to top off oil and a tire tread check to see how that’s going. This has kept the bike in oil and prevented me from doing anything TOO disastrous… but I’ve missed a lot of stuff over 100k miles: multiple loosening bolts (including the loss of a centerstand bolt before I started the loctite protocol), low tire pressure before the addition of the TPMS, loose chain that was quiet but still needed adjustment, pannier that was left on the ground next to the bike because I was in a hurry (yea that’s bad I know), front wheel mud flap that had somehow got caught up above the crossover part of the crash bars and I rode for 2 days before noticing it, headlight out, and lots of other things I probably would have caught with a more thoughtful pre-flight check.
Be harsh.. Stay alive… PS. don’t put tiny little tinted lights on your bike….. Love your vids man!!!
Hey John don’t know if you did a video on this or not but how about an inspection video of the primary chain case and what to look for and possible chain adjustment video curious about the plastic self adjuster
Bestcops. breaks, electrics, steering, tyres, chain, oil, petrol and suspension.
I have a quick release tire and it came loose and I went over the handle bars, I was only riding around though, not mountain biking
Me: Wow, that’s so simple! I’m going to do that from now on…. Me a week later: What’s an oil?
Dude! I LOVE those tires!!! What are those tires? One thing I can’t understand is why are so many tires almost bald (very little actual tread) when you buy them? Seems to me that the better the tread, the better the traction. If I’m wrong, please let me know. I am a fairly new rider.
The mix between your technicity and the mescaline graphics and humour amazes me! Bravo!
Nice work John. Sweet mobile garage too. What made you choose one and where did you get it from?
Nice job DanDan! We live, and ride in Phoenix, and it’s nice to have a “local” take on riding in the desert, especially from someone with a medical background. Keep ’em coming.
The pressure listed on a tire’s sidewall is the “maximum” pressure recommended, NOT the running pressure! For the correct running pressure, refer to the bike’s manual or the sticker located on/around your swingarm. Usually two pressures will be given, a light load and heavy load, choose accordingly. Remember, riding two-up/fully loaded with gear will require an adjustment too. Also, minor changes for comfort, handling, terrain and weather are perfectly acceptable.

great tips here’s one that is a must before any of theses. “check yourself”! if not up to par (feeling sick) can render all other tips useless. nice & useful video brother, be safe now!✌
How about checking the front suspension?
Make sure pressure (psi) corresponds to riders weight.
Check the rebound as well.
Feel the tires check the cables and brakes. Everything else you’ll feel when riding out the driveway and your chain when you line it at 600mi
just a quick question, why do you use a btwin bike with a triple??
The musical alphabet ABCDEFG, brilliant way to do a thorough enough pre-check while also not taking an hour and a half to do a full TCLOCKS check either, i’d of course do a TCLOCKS every month or even every other week to make sure my machine isn’t going to limp and wheeze its way into a position that it refuses to move any further
I have that same bike Yellow and all. Black tinns going on soon though & 1275….
Ah, some common sense haven’t used T-clocks since I got my license, but this seems actually useful. Cheers!
my uncle has a twin cam fat boy. his final drive belt went out, and when he went to get a new one, he found that a chain, and sprocket set was cheaper than a new belt….so he put a chain on, he said properly maintained it will last longer…..lol…he’s old school so it fit him better anyway. I always find that story funny. not that I’m against belts or anything…..I have a belt drive bike, two shaft driven and a chain bike…but I always chuckle when he starts talking about it
If you have a particularly lightweight saddle it is worth checking the saddle rails once in a while. I’ve had one break up in a speed bump, and oh boy, it hurt.
Always check tire pressure. Tires are expensive and the correct pressure makes em last…no doubt. Are those V&H Short Shots on that sportster? Look like it. Nice ride!
Used the checklist and saw that my rear brake switch needed way too much travel to actuate the light. A little adjustment and I was good to go. Thanks!
Love the videos, really good practical advice. Just had my local dealer do the 1k on my 2018 Fatbob, so I have 1100 miles on the tires and I noticed a nail in the back tire, it’s holding pressure so I just happened to see the nail. Can I safely repair the tire with one of those vulcanized tire plugs?
Nice, well used and beaten bar tape. Even Danny Lloyd takes a spill now and then.
funny you mention the mirror spinning around. just last week….. stay, mirror, stay!!!
These help videos are the absolute most fantastic I’ve found for motorcycles. They’re short, to the point, and work for the large majority of motorbikes. Thank you so much!
I have a good tire gauge and do check my tires but it’s kind of a pain on my ultra (FLHTK) rear tire. Are there any 90 degree valve extenders that you recommend to make it easier to check the pressure? I was thinking of the kind that screw onto my existing valve stems.
hey Ari, I would love to see a video on pre-delivery inspection on motorcycles. thanks and love the videos
I’ve been riding street bikes for 41+ years and with all that time I don’t claim to know everything having said this “videos” like you put out is as good as gold for bikers, remember, different opinions are valuable so thanks for your videos bro
How to respond to a vehicle pulling out in front of you on your right, while they are going left essentially crossing over your lane…while you have been maintaining highway speed 45mph or greater…
He thinks he is a jet pilot doing a preflight checks, not even 747 pilots are this thourgh.
To check lights, when stopped behind a vehicle with a shiny rear end, cycle through your front facing lights. When stopped with a vehicle behind you with a shiny front end, cycle though your rear facing lights
That last part about looking at in the mirror is probably one of the most important. Uber exists for a reason
I have 2 Harley’s, and I didn’t know I have 4 way hazard flashers
How about a video on adjusting a chain slack on a sport bike
You only have 2 wheels not 4, man that was obvious as hell. lol
How about eyeballing the brake pads? I suppose you would feel through the lever if they were quite worn
Hi Dan
Excellent video and superb advice as always. I was wondering, the tool roll you have in this video, who makes them and where can I get one from?
Most important Fat Bike check. Tire pressure! 9 time of 10. You’re running too much. Stop! Drop! And Roll better on top of the snow!
Is there a way to check visually if my tire alignment is ok?
new subscriber just wanted to know what kind of grips do you have on the sporter
Great channel. I took about 10 years off from riding. Recently found out I have leukemia so decided to have an end of life crisis and buy a Harley. Love it! I enjoy your videos. Great review for someone who hasn’t ridden in a while (or a new rider).
“replace the inner tube”. Doesn’t anyone at GCN know how to seal a puncture?
2:00 DON’T just release the throttle, some bikes, most commonly BMW, have problem with doing so gets the valves stuck fully open!
INSTEAD: Roll it gently hand make sure by feel that it’s smooth tention that’s pulling it back and it doesn’t get stuck somewhere.
I was wondering if you could do a quick video on post long term storage services on your sporty. I am coming home from deployment in a weeks and would like to know some of the basic things to run through and check before riding. Also you have a great channel i hope you keep it up. Thank you for all the info and advice you have already given. Also any advice on MMI you can give would be greatly appreciated. I am starting MMI at fort bliss next semester.
I’m glad you mentioned that the oil leaks into the crank case after sitting for a while, one of my riding buddies had just gotten his license (lack of experience) thought he was low after his pre ride check added almost 2 quarts. He pulled into the meetup with his 883 puking oil out of carb and tank. He said he heard a loud bang(presumably the oil cap blowing off) but he didn’t know what it was so he kept riding.
One on basic damping and preload adjustment would be cool. Aswell as setting your sag height.
lol.. went to change my tire one time and the rear sprocket was coming undone from the hub. all bolts loose. doing 75-80 mph on highway daily. I check things more often now.
right on about the tire pressure…I constantly see people riding bikes with low tire pressure and I always tell them to air up. Usually people are glad I stopped to tell them and they say something like ” I thought something felt weird about the way the bike is handling”….very important…nice job John!
Great video man, I’m a pretty experienced rider and mechanically inclined but I still enjoy watching all of your videos, back when I was a nub you almost had to be embarrassed to ask questions about something basic cause alot of the experienced riders would get pissy or treat you like a dumb ass so I learned everything the hard way or just taught myself. keep up the good work brother, the videos are awesome.
Started having random electrical power failure everything goes off (lights Speedo etc) on the bike even the engine dies can’t seem to pin it down to one specific reason sometimes first thing when cold another when cornering or more annoyingly when overtaking, and now dying on tick over, strangely after it has happened indicators won’t cancel for a while and tick over goes up to about 2 1/2 thousand revs, any thoughts or ideas as to what it could be please. On my 2012 fatbob thanks
Really liking the look of that rear mudguard. whats the make, if you don’t mind me asking?
Love the channel man. The content and the info are great but honestly my favorite part is the editing. Keep up the good work.
Good as ever, John Maxwell! Always good to get back to basics for sure. Thanks for the heads up and keep doing the do.
Just had a buddy who knew his tire pressure was low and rode anyway. He was going 55 when it caused him to lose control of his bike. He is lucky to be alive today. He is an old school biker and he knew better. (Even admitted that it was totally his fault.)
enjoy what your doing John, learn something every time, yep!
Love your vids. Didn’t ride for 15 years…I bought a new to me/used 2015 FLSTFB not happy the rear brake is way to forward to my liking… Any suggestions? Help please. Peace
Hey MC Garage guys! I have a suggestion for a video: please make one approaching what to check when buying an used bike. (cheers from Brazil and congrats for the channel)
Thanks for the video John. I’ve been riding for years, but have always gone off the tires for air pressure. Never knew I was doing it wrong. Excellent tip.
Hey Matt, how does it feel riding your bike with your 90 degree angle air cleaner? I’m think about getting one but reviews keep saying that they are constantly aware of it since it’s in the way. Ps. I have forward controls…. thoughts anyone???
What motorcycle is he using in the video can sombody pliz tell me
I really need to thank you for this guys. I was lazy on inspections and now do it every day and twice on Sunday .
Also sounds like a good list to go through when buying a second hand bike!
Good videos man. Watching what you’re putting out there makes me feel better about going to MMI in Arizona as soon as I figure out how to make it work with life.
Need a big change in life!
If you have any input about the school, I’d love to hear more or maybe in another video for you
John
Hey Ari, thank you for making our lives easier, the mini bleeder from Motion Pro just arrived. Keep up the great videos!
you forgot to check the rider if he/she in good condition =)
Even in the Rain we check for Rainbows! I love these videos!
I was in a motorcycle accident with my little girl on the back and dude said he didn’t see me… Then shortly later admits that HE NEVER EVEN LOOKED… Now because he NEVER LOOKED I’m out big money… I sold my 99 fxdx to buy a 07 road king and had it all of 3 and a half months before it was totalled… Now my summer is screwed… Sucks.. However highway bars saved my legs and watching tires saved me from the worse day of my life…
I just made this video required viewing for every member of my club. Keep-em coming.
I want to remove the muffler for better sound and i keep the DB killer. Does it harm the engine?
make a video on maintaining a drum brake. or conversion from drum brake to front disc brake.
I have a 2005 1100 and a oil fiter change is a pain in the ass to say the least how offer do I need to change it can I go every other or do I have to do it every time
Did a M-check out on the trail yesterday the cage for the waterbottle was all loose without me knowing it…
i guess i’ll get made fun of for this question; I have the original tires on my Harley when i bought new in 2016, i currently have 7500 mi. on it. I have really good tread depth on the tires but i havn’t rode in 5 months, should i have my front and rear tire changed or keep goin until they are at minimum tread depth?
Did anyone else catch the “thanks Chuck Beaubuck”?
as in… chuck chuck bo buck, banana-fanna….
clever and childishlove it!
I have the same bike.. Not the same cranks, chainring n wheels..
That is my walk through on my 2004 xl1200c I also check the petcock and choke function and about once every 3 months I pop the air cleaner and tank and check the status of the carb stupid ethanol in our gas gumbs that carb up so quick
When I apply my back brake it just gives out a wired noise please help
Good video, been liking these new MC garage ones… I am surprised you did not include checking brake liquid levels.
Cheers John my bike/ I am of the road for a while ask no questions al tell you know lies but when you say you keep yours on a battery tender? how long how often cheers mate Oh and turning it over the other day thought I would go through the gears ooops U know that clunk 1st gear Well much louder and cut the engine of so let it warm up and tightened my ass up and tried again not so loud but still concerning whats happening bro not back on the road till Oct need to be doing the right things till then cheers man
