It seems it's almost daily we discuss the suicide rate in physicians or the torture that is the prior authorization process while nothing happens. We don't have representation and there is no reason to expect a politician or an insurance company to help us out. Hell, my primary care association is ran by the largest insurance company in the state. They certainly aren't going to do it.
So I called my state representative's office and will be meeting with them in June to hopefully get them to sponsor some bills for the next state legislature. The process seems much easier than I expected and they were anxious to hear my ideas.
I'm going to be submitting a bill about limiting the pain of prior authorizations. It should not be too hard since my state is one of only 2 that do not have any laws regarding prior authorizations.
I'm going to submit a bill that will do much better to protect physicians who need to get mental health treatment. No to risking your job because you are depressed or anxious and need to get treatment. Not in a state that needs 1500 more primary care docs.
I'm going to submit a bill to make this state more attractive to primary care providers. Not exactly sure what I'm going to ask for but I sure know what makes primary care a pain in the ass so it should be easy.
You dont need to know how to write a bill. The legislators all have staff that are paid with our tax dollars to do that. You just need a good reason and ideas and the more detail the better on what you want the law to accomplish.
If my legislator does not want to sponsor the bill, I will try another. It's not required that your own rep do it. There was a bill submitted this year by high school students. Hell, if they did it so can I.
I know that the insurance lobby will probably pay off all the legislators and get my bills killed. I dont care, I'll try again next year and the year after. At least they will be spending their profit on bribes instead of yachts next year.
I'd encourage any other fed up, demoralized and beaten down docs like me to set up appointments with your reps in June in your own state. Come with good ideas on bills that will make our lives better. Even if a small percentage of us succeed in getting something passed, that is miles ahead of what is happening now.
