See no I’m 6’6 1/2 290 and the chart says I’m morbidly obese
BMI is a good indicator, but people with lots of muscles can be overweight obese and be normal body fat while people can also be normal and be overweight (eg skinny fat).
That one guys bf% was definetly not 28, i don’t even think the other guy was 20%, they were both so thin!
Bmi doesn’t count for your muscle the calculator treats the muscle as fat therefore increasing the number
People are mad because the interviewer is overweight. I don’t think she’s trying to say she’s not obese. She legitimately pointing out the issue of exclusively using BMI. Nothing she said was wrong. She is saying if you want to have a more accurate measure of health, go get it. Don’t just use BMI. This is a great example of fatphobia to the extreme where you can’t even listen to what a woman is saying unless she’s skinny.

Guys I am a doctor and believe me BMI is just used to see if your weight is normal with your height, mostly useful in accessing underweight patients, very helpful in children and developing countries, if you have great muscles, doctors wouldn’t even ask you to do a BMI anyways:p but even you get obese BMI, doctor can tell that it’s okay because you have normal muscle mass which is healthy. It seems to me, the real issue is not with BMI, it’s formula, nor it’s professional usage, but the public’s use of the number. I get what they’re going for but just about all of their alternative methods are more invasive and expensive. I think that part of the prevalence of BMI testing is its a quick easy check for most people and if you dip into unhealthy weights then switch to a different method for testing to get down into what you need to do personally to be a healthier weight if that’s something that could benefit you.

To all those under 18, bmi calculators are not for you.
As an adult I have ran a BMI of 20 as a training athlete and 24.5 at a normal. Then I hit a 30. I was definitely hitting overweight as my waist became 8 inches larger. I spent a year and lost 50 or so pounds back to 23.8.
Thing is that it is a guideline to estimate where you stand. No one says it is the complete picture.
At 6 feet, and at 175 pounds I am feeling a little light but… can I ever run and jump and play. Couldn’t do that at 227.
Using other calculations I am at 11.5 to 17 % fat, but bmi says I am 20 to 22 %.
I know my fitness and my natural weight. and to finish I would say easily that if you are 6 feet tall and weigh over 225 you are either as fat as I was OR if you are not fat and have a lot of muscle your heart is being o reworked BECAUSE your heart is always the same size and does not grow while you put on fat or muscle. You will overwork its capacity and end life early.

Nobody is using the bmi for bodybuilder or other elite athletes. Jesus christ. It’s simply used to get a rough estimation of your classification. Of course different methods like mri are a lot more accurate. But can you do an mri at home? With no real equipment? Nobody is saying its the only way but it’s an easy solution to get a rough estimate

40 inches, really! I’m 6’4″ with a 40″ waste. I have a friend who is 5’4″ with a 38″ waste. So he’s ok and I’m not, really!?!? What if we just took our height in inches and divided by two. My 76 inches would be 38″ waste making me overweight and my friend at 64″ would mean a 32″ waste making him really overweight. Now doesn’t this make more sense than one fixed number for everyone?
As usual completely useless. Even with healthy bmi people can have copious amount of subcutaneous fat which is even more dangerous than the visible. This excessive focus on weight is not healthy. Best way to measure body fat for non professional is to use the navy body fat measurement, it only has an error margin of 3 to 5%. That will be a good indicator if you are healthy or not.

BMI is an index, indices are usually a generalisation and they don’t reflect individual/special details. That doesn’t diminish their value or make them wrong. BMI is used in conjunction with other measures, not on its own to determine health of an individual.

I seen a video that made much sense about the BMI. Two men both 5’7 43 yrs old, one has a bmi 35% body fat and the other has bmi 10% body fat. The one with less body fat would eat more vs the one with 35% cause the body muscle mass is different. 222-10% be 199.8 body mass vs 222-35%=144.3 body mass. If we ate the same he wouldn’t get gains and the one with 35 wouldn’t lose weight.. So your better of to just find your bmi and minus that from your weight to get your bmr.. Cause the only thing in your body that is using calories is muscle body mass not fat.

Keep in mind the BMI isn’t just “inaccurate” it it just punished those who have a large amount of muscle and those aren’t the people complaining abt the BMI’s inaccuracies. The people complaining are those that are 5’2” 230lbs and have only ever seen dumbbells in pictures

ive been working out for 3 years ive gone from overweight to healthy and gained alot of mass from muscle, im 5’10 and weigh 170 and dont trust your weight its just a number look in a mirror and if you look like your healthy than you are.
the examples of people that they use in this video ridiculous it is not normal to have as much muscle as athletes leaving out key information like this is why I find vox very shady they always have an agenda or some kind of audience to please with these videos rather than straight facts, I’m very disappointed
I play basketball, do parkour, gymnastics and even bboying. The Doctor told me I am overweight and need to see a dietitan. Looking forward to see her, taking off my shirt and showing her my pecs and big biceps. I will also ask her which new sport I need to take up
Yeah, but even too much muscle can be too much weight, and decrease your lifespan….the lighter the better, even with muscle, it is not a guarantee of good health…..too much muscle, not good…waist for men should be, generally, 32″
