r/medicine, I'm new to this subreddit and I wasn't sure if this is the place for me to post this inquiry, but hear me out and if necessary, kindly guide me to the proper subreddit or website for me to repost my question, thank you so much!
I am currently a high schooler science research student (future med school student, fingers crossed) interested in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and machine learning (ML), and wish to combine the two in seeking a better treatment regimen rooted in precision medicine for all patients individually; the current treatment methodology can be described as a one-size-fits-all approach without utmost regard to the patient's specific symptoms and condition, which doesn't work optimally for the vast majority of patients, and can be very expensive in the long run. The rationale for this project is novel as well as extremely beneficial, and this algorithm could be applied to many other diseases as well, especially heterogeneous ones where treatment can be less than optimal.
For my project, I seek to create a ML algorithm and a model that can identify the biomarkers for COPD as a whole. COPD is a very heterogeneous disease that encompasses many diseases such as emphysema, bronchitis, and more. Identifying the biomarkers for COPD can lead to heightened efficiency for diagnosis and treatment. This form of treatment that targets the specific biomarkers in a patient is known as precision medicine, and when combined with ML, is a relatively new concept in the field of translational medicine.
Now, to the crux of the matter: creating this algorithm is impossible without the use of patient data to serve as training for the AI within the ML. For this reason, it is necessary that I have some source of open source data or data I can gain access to of anonymous patient vitals, generalized family history regarding COPD and any daughter diseases/conditions, and/or genetic analysis of patients that I can then implement to find these biomarkers.
I ask that if you know any sources or contacts I can reach out to for the databases and/or other matters regarding the project (possible ML models, types of machine learning necessary, more biological background regarding COPD), please let me know down in the comments and/or via DM.
If anyone on this subreddit who could kindly lend a hand in the success of this project, I would be eternally grateful for the help. Thank you for your time in reading this post, and I hope you have a stellar rest of your day!
