I just learned today that my Samsung S10+ has a built in oximeter hidden inside the stock Samsung Health app. It asks you to hold your finger over the camera for 15-20 seconds and reads your pulse and SpO2. Obviously this isn't an FDA approved device but my google searches looking for users who compared it to real medical devices only find positive responses. It's buried inside the "measure your stress" part of the app that I would ordinarily never go to.
Since my goal in the ED is finding ways to safely discharge as many of the COVID-19 positive patients as possible, and to reassure the worried well, I am going to start informally letting people know that along with keeping track of their exercise tolerance / SOB symptoms, they can likely track their home oximetry to help them know when or if they need to come back. Ideally this will help more of the anxious worried well stay away.
(crazy times, I can't imagine doing this normally).
