What to Eat Before Running A Half Marathon To Run Your Fastest Race Ever
Video taken from the channel: Triathlon Taren
Once you’ve established a good, solid running base, it’s definitely a smart idea to complete a half marathon (13.1 miles) before a full marathon. The short answer is no—it depends on your fitness level and marathon goals. But unlike a lot of bad marathon training advice that will give you one cookie-cutter way of preparing, let’s see if you should race a half before your marathon. 3 Vital Reasons to Skip a Half Marathon.”[If] you do it a few weeks before the race, [then you] know your body can take the distance,” he says, adding that running the full distance in training helps him recover much more quickly after the race itself.
A useful half-marathon strategy is to run it as a dress rehearsal for the marathon, including the middle to late miles at your planned marathon pace (MP.If you run a marathon, its pretty much a given you will run a half before finishing a full. As for back to back runs.
It will depend on your level of fitness and training. Since you are asking the question it can be assumed you are not at the place for either level to do back to back.Although it’s the twice as long as a half marathon, the strategy is not too different—you’ll want to give yourself enough time to prepare and choose an appropriate training plan.
You don’t have to run any as long as you follow a full marathon training program. One of my old college roommates went from not running at all to running the Boston Marathon. I ran 2 half marathons before my first full but it was a whole other level.
Training for a half marathon requires consistency in your training. You can’t just run once or twice and then take a full week off. By running 3-5 times per week as called for by your training plan, you will build the consistent habit of running on a regular basis.
I’m sure it would be good to do a full half practice in these first. How many miles is “broken in”? If you are buying the same model of shoe, you should be fine with just rotating them in to your training runs immediately.Depending on your fitness level, you should run the half marathon at or a little below your lactate (anaerobic) threshold.
If you start out too fast, you will go above your lactate threshold. This means your body will be producing too much lactate (lactic acid) right from the beginning of the race.Aim to run a half-marathon (or even 30K) at least four weeks before the race.
While some experts advise no running the day or two before the big race, Fieseler says an easy run, even the day before, is OK. If you do run, keep it short, ”one to three miles at most,” says Mark Courtney, a retired physicians’ assistant and veteran of 150 marathons and at least that many half.A half marathon (13.1 miles) and full marathon (26.2 miles) both require long runs as an essential part of your training. These are endurance events, so you need to build your endurance in order to successfully cross the finish line. The best way to build endurance is through long runs—runs that last 90 minutes or longer.
While you should be fired up for your first half marathon, a bit of realism (not fear) makes this moment something you can move through. Get focused on all of the reasons why you want to cross that finish line and how it will feel to say “I freaking ran 13.1 miles”.A half marathon at half Ironman® pace is a solid long run so you’re good there as long as you are smart the week after the race and get in your regularly scheduled long run.
Do. Not. Miss.

First time I’ve heard an American say crighky ( not sure of spelling), thought it was a British thing.
Great advice, working up the courage to apply for a half marathon next year
Hi thanks for the awesome helpful motivation video, I just subscribed to you any chance you could subscribe to me, I’m trying to get past 20 subscribers haha
Duuuude. 4 hours before a half marathon… 4 hours? I always eat an hour before my start. No problems at all…
Too much food, to run an 1/2 you dont need that food. I have PR 1/2 in 59 minutes and my nutricion is based on legumes.
I just watched Taren and Ginger Runner back to back and I swear they’re the same person.
6 am race start this weekend. Hard to eat 4 hrs beforehand….thanks for this vid.
Hi, so in the week building up to the half marathon. (I have one on Sunday), would you just keep stocking up on the carbs and take it a bit lighter the day before the race? Thanks.
Wow! I ended up using this video on my most recent 5k and lost 47 seconds( 24:18)than my previous record. These races were 1 week apart! Thank you!
Oh yeah, that was from an old website that doesn’t exist anymore. Sorry about that.
Great video! Will intermittent fasting help control cortisol levels? How many calories should u have each day that you are training for a half marathon? Thanks!
I’m running 5k about three times a week, max distance so far it’s 8k. Do you think I can get up to half marathon in 3 months?
so, what should i eat before my first HAlf IronMan? Thats what im really scared about, that i wont have enough energy. Thanks
Half Marathon… “They usually only last an hour to two hours….” WHAT… this is NOT a beginners guide then… hahaha.
I haven’t been ignoring you, I’m back in business with another video on What to Eat Before Running a Half Marathon http://buff.ly/1HL491H
Hope to do a 1:20 in my first half marathon in June! Wish me luck.
For runners, tip #1. DO NOT TRY VIRTUAL HALF OR FULL MARATHON VIRTUAL Human Failure could happen at anytime meaning no guarantee having a medal. It is what is is, so I suggested to do it on the main event Start Line by person, if you can’t make it then do it next time, save money, time, and energy, injury-free. Updated: 02/06/2020
A half marathon is not far AT ALL! It’s like not even a third of a marathon…
My biggest improvement came when I found a good physiologist / Chiropractor. Transformed my strength training + mechanics.
Hi Sage, I’m training for a half marathon that goes through mainly hill-y trails. I have my trail runners that I hike and run trails in, but my training is not always on trails. Additionally, I will be doing three weeks on training on a treadmill in December. Thoughts on training on pavement in trail runners?
I’ve done a full marathon in 2013 and I’m about to do my 4th half marathon however it’s been just about 5 years since my last one. I watch your content to refresh my memory since I ran cross country and track from 7th-12th(2014) I feel back in love with the sport
My first half marathon was 7 months ago when i was 14 and now i m 15 with another half marathon…..wish me luck!
I’m training for my first full marathon in end of May after running two HM last year. First one I choked completely because of bad hydration and crazy hot weather. The second one I crushed with a 1:42. I want to finish the marathon in < 4:00. My only concerns is if my knees will hold up. I got ITBS
from time to time.
20 minutes…or 3 miles…you have REALLY high hopes for me lol
But how do you find the time to run 40 miles a week? Seriously guys I have a job and a family
ive got a half on sunday with no real training plan. ive ran every week since march 2017 starting out with the couch to 5k. i mostly do weekly 5k jogs(faster if i do parkrun) and maybe a 10k or longer on a sunday. im not particularly fast but and would like to get under 2 hours for my first one. i believe i can stick to a 5:40 per km pace which is quite a comfortable pace for me but its just the unknown of running that far!! it could easily turn jelly legged after 15k lol
i just ran my first time half marathon few hours ago..and my time was 2 hours 33 minutes….hehehe not bad for first timmer
Hello, thanks for the video. It was informative.
I have a question for anyone who can answer how long after a half marathon is it advisable to have sexual relations? I plan to run my third half marathon in a different city and my SO will be with me. Both of us will be happy after I complete my race I just wanted to know how long I should wait, before I celebrate my happiness with her. Thank you.
I’m 11 years old and doing a half marathon soon, wish me luck!
Great Video, What do you think about cycling? One of my workouts is a 7k ride to the place i like to run (and back of course, so 15k on the bike, usually at 80% workout, cause traffic)… From there i can run 6k or 10k or more. How should i think about how that ride fits into my weekly milage?
I’m training for my first marathon in New York City.
How many days off. Am I rest my sore ankle without wrecking the training plan. Thanks!! Lynore
Sorry, but without a plan you will get hurt!!! I ran half and full marathons with a plan and NEVER had any problems. Now, at almost age 70, running in Cuenca, Ecuador..at a much higher altitude..no problems, it was never about who was faster or better than I. The beauty of a runner is all about how we run…enjoying the run. Those who never run will never understand that.
Currently training for my first marathon in Copenhagen in May. Finding the training hard but hope I can be ok for race day!
Your age if very hard to find. Coincidence? You look at least 38. So if you’re 55 and giving health advice.. Keep it going! But if you look much older, maybe you should reevaluate your lifestyle before promoting it. Thank you!
I used this marathon training program “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it) to train for my full marathon. I decided to begin again with a improved plan. I am experienced in 5K’s and 10K’s and half marathons. Thanks to this guide, I`m now going to take the full marathon. This wonderful training program is a must-try..
My experience in running short distances is Twenty years. Within the last two years, I finished five half marathons. Right after deciding to aim for a full marathon, I used this marathon training courses “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). and plenty of excellent ideas. Finished my first marathon AND qualified for Boston..
I made use of this marathon training “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it) in my half marathon training, and only used Six weeks of the schedule provided, and ran a PR! I`m presently utilizing it for my marathon training courses, and am running much better training runs as compared to previous marathon training courses. I ran another half during my marathon training courses, and set another PR..
Thank you Sage! Im listening to you Im going to add tempo runs
My first Half Marathon Race was December 6,2016. I got sprained on my left and right calves on my 14th km. I finished the race at 02:20:35…
Last December of 2018, i did a time trial for 21km and got 01:47:25…
My upcoming half Marathon is on August 04,2019 in Siem Reap,Cambodia.(KHMER EMPIRE MARATHON 2019)
I just ran 10km race last June 16,2019…
Do you think Training for half marathon till August is enough for me?
Thanks Coach..
Would love to know if there are any specific tips for longer trail runs. Have a 26k coming up in May.
Nuts to running…I ran in my youth and had my knees and ankles crackle and I was thin. I would run as a young adult and the same thing happened and I was a mover and very strong and well conditioned. Now that I am in my mid 30s, I just walk. My knees and ankles can’t take the pounding on the roads even with running shoes. It’s my joints that give way before muscles and endurance do.
Thanks for upload! @ 57 years young hoping to do a half in Liverpool in May and a full one same place following year. Best of all I’m 4 stone lighter than I was and now a Plantface eater! to beat diabetes!!
Hi Sage..a fan of yours. Can u update the links quoted in the video? Cheers
Being a sprinter I am quite surprised that I just ran a half marathon.
interesting points,if anyone else wants to discover how to run a marathon try Sarparder Running Expert Starter (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my neighbor got excellent success with it.
I\’m not sure but,if anyone else is searching for how to run a marathon try Niposcu Complete Running Adviser (do a google search )? Ive heard some great things about it and my brother in law got amazing success with it.
I ran a 5k a couple years ago. I just signed up for a half marathon and it starts in 14 days! I know I will finish, but I know I may be last lol
One thing leads to another
Look at how young Bullwinkle looks in this video! Okay, I’m trying to do a high mileage week this week. So far so good, mostly. But today, I woke up late. Tough to wake up in the morning. I have noted that on my new Hoka Clifton 4 shoes that I have been using for road miles, that there is wear on the outside edge of the heel, which would be good for me to find out what part(s) of my runs were causing that. Maybe Rocky could ride her bike and film me with my action camera particularly my lower legs so that I can figure out what part of my run that is happening. Though I am fairly certain that it is from the downhills that are steeper. Would appreciate Rocky helping me to confirm that though. As I suspect that on some downhills I am putting on the brakes with the heel a bit. Thus scraping the outside edge of the heel. Most of the other parts of my run I think that I am not rubbing the outside edge of the heel. Confirmation would be good.
Okay, I have not been doing any track workouts because of not really having a good track to run on or access to a track. But that is of course a good thing to consider.
I have trained 2 months now for half-marathon 9.9.2018 about 40km/week. Now I do most km maybe 60km/week. Longest run so far was 21.1km that was 2:10 at conversation pace.
I have usually weak point after 17km so that’s why longer long runs. Short runs faster than long runs like 5-8km little faster than marathon pace. My best now 1:53 and age 52. but now I try 5:00/km or faster so under 1:45 like previous race but the route was too hard hills and gravel etc.
And so tempo runs faster than race goal? 20-40min is about time for those? Maybe 4:50/km?
Do you recommend adding in the race specific workout like tempo runs and sprints only after you’ve built up to a certain goal weekly mileage or can they be performed simultaneously?
I like your channel! I have just started the 12-weeks-training-session for my 10th Marathon with a target of sub 3:20.
the part about running form intrigues me. I have been running for many years (but never as a full blooded runner). I am around 87 kg and 187 cm. One of my achievements is running 3k in 10 min 30 sec @93 kg. I also finished top 10 in a half marathon with 1500m climb. My legs (bicycle fitting style) is a bit over 90 cm. I used several years to adjust to a 180 step per minute stride by running with a metronome ticking in my ear. After the last 6 months of bringing this metronome mp3 player with me to the gym every time I warm up for weightlifting on a treadmill, I figured I could go without it when the season for running outside was coming and I was injury free. So, I did some weeks with a long run in the woods every week. Guess what happened, my stride went back to what it used to be all those years back. I am a muscular guy, so I run kinda fast on the treadmill on the warmups for my weightlifting (usually 10-20 minutes in 15+ kph). This means that my steplength is adjusted for that speed and when I go out for 1-2 hour runs I am not able to maintain that 180 stride per minute because I am used to a certain steplength. I guess my question is, can you be an allround fitness person and still strive for 180 steps per second, or is this just for you ultralight-only-long-distance runners? Even my soccer coach from 20 years ago told me I had a huge steplength.
I love bodyweight exercises because it matches well with how running keeps your weight down… should I get into triathlons because I have all this free muscleweight in my back and on quads, or should I restrict myself to running quick 3k competitions, or maybe specialize in hill running? I am not that into specializing, but it seems you cant really stand out in any way unless you do and crossfit just seems like another religion. Sorry for the long rant. Any thoughts or comments would be cool.
edit: here’s a soccer analogy (if anyone is watching the world cup): zlatan/ronaldinho vs messi/maradona -> notice how their running form is different. can we really say that one is better than the other? even this forefoot running-fad has been debunked.
I have a question Iam 15 years is it healthy for me to run half a marathon?
Pro tip: train every day and shuffle your training, by that I mean you have to swim 2 times a week run 3 times a week and go to the gym 2 times a week, and one free day.
After 2 weeks you will see a big improvement
Hi Sage, followed your half marathon plan and run 84:43 which was over a 3minute PR! Thank you.
I just want to say that I absolutely hate the opening theme to your channel.
This marathon training courses “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it) got me through my first marathon without injury and I met my sub 4hr target. The book gives plenty of great info about training courses, diet plan, technique, and so on. but the very useful page in the whole book is the training schedule which informs you how far to run on what day..
Thank you sir, great advice. This is gonna b my second half marathon and I want to get a sub 2hours first one got 2.33mins but didn’t train well enough. Hopefully will be ready this time!!
hi im doing full marathon this year when say doing my easy pace want would an easy mile be im doing 7 minutes 30 i do 50 miles a week love your videos
I am not understanding ur language please tel me hindi india
Thank you Coach Sage. I’ll have my 3rd mini-marathon race this coming Sunday. For the past 6 weeks, I Ve been running 5-6km 5 days a week together with Yoga aiming for my first half-marathon by the end of the year. Been watching your clips everyday before my practice. They are very helpful and inspiring.
I plan to run a full marathon in September. I did 27 km today. I could have done more but my feet got too sore because my shoes are crap. I find that past 10 km it’s less about physical fitness and more about mental strength and pain tolerance.
Maybe a quick video idea:When living in a place with race seasons going from April-Oct, what is a good plan for off season training? Things to work on when you don’t have a race coming up or for people that transition into a different sport for part of the year. I play basketball and officiate high school basketball in the winter, so running gets put on a back burner for time commitment during the off season. Need some ideas for things I can work on that won’t take up as much time as in season training that will help me when basketball is over and I start revving up for that first April half marathon.
Sage your videos are single handily the BEST source of information about running that caters to all ages, and all experiences. I find your content to be the main source to my running improvement. Which is the best workout for a half marathon? two mile repeats, Yasso 800’s or the classic long or tempo run? Love it brotha cheers to more miles.
Attempting my first half marathon soon. Thanks for this video, I know it’s a few years old now but still really helpful
great vid! yet again! weird thing for me, a full mara does not sound good for me, but i would to run an ultra…race to the stones or something like that, dont know why?! keep up the good work!
Thanks for the good tips, i did my first half in 1 hour and 43 mins. Next goal is 1:38 in 2 months!
Speed workouts and tempo runs are the key. When I posted my HM PR of 1:25:21, it felt really easy for the most part. First 10K I had a big smile on my face even though I averaged close to 4:00 min/km. The reason it felt easy is because I was doing lots of intervals, uphill sprints and tempo runs at a faster pace. So on race day, even this fast pace (for me) felt comfortable. But do start doing these workouts gradually and fairly slow, or you might get an injury. Ideally you want to have about 12 weeks of training before a big race, this will give you enough time to slowly build intensity.
what pros don’t get is their easy miles is intense training by anyone’s standards. my easy pace would be pretty pointless, I may as well walk
Love distance running, and had done 3 official marathons or more and five for fun. I’m looking at a summer mountain marathon, and a flat and fast trail 50k at the end of the year
I need a video of the most rediculol songs you sing when you are hurting. lets do.
Running Boston 2020 for Dana-Farber Cancer Research. 2nd year in a row, so Boston 2019 was my first and only marathon so far….crashed and burned in a 5 hour performance in first one…but raised over $17,250.00 for Dana-Farber so it was a great success. This year still raising money and would like to run closer to 4 hour 15 minutes. Just did a half marathon in 1:56:11.
Not sure if you or any experienced runners still frequent this video. I have signed up for my first half Marathon. it is 6 months away and I’ve started training. I’ve already been training for 3 weeks and seen big changes. Before I used to look at the clock every 30 seconds to see if I am almost done as I slowly die on the inside and want the agony to end. Now (3 weeks later) I am up to 4 miles per run and 5 miles on the weekend and the training is significantly easier. I am only running every other day so 3-4 times a week but don’t do any other training (aside from soccer once a week). I am slowly increasing my distances and my pace (started at around 3 miles now at 4 per run, started at around 6 miles per hour now up to 7 miles per hour pace). That being said I do have a few questions 1) did i start training too early? 2) Is it a reasonable plan if most of my training involves just running and resting (i.e. one day on/one day off), or is strength training just as important as running? 3) My plan is to increase my running to 5 miles every other day, with the weekend run being longer, specifically increase by 1 mile every month until I reach the 10/11 mile mark preferably at 7.5 pace per mile in May. I am doing all of this on a treadmill but plan on doing outdoors training when it warms up in April/May Is this a reasonable plan or is it too slow in terms of growth?
Hope to see you in Houston Sage! You’re an inspiration brother! Good luck!!!
Half Marathon at the end of February, followed by my first ultra at the end of April
Super useful! this gets me so stoked for the spring season here in Norway speed workout once the snow clears:)
Just ran my fastest half marathon today 1:42:50 so proud of myself!!!
Thanks a lot for, Sage, for this interesting video! May I add a very simple, often overlooked tip. Try to follow the ideal racing line by all means. According to my very accurate Garmin GPS I was running 21.42 k at my last half marathon and even 21.48 k at my second last half marathon (instead of 21.1 k), only because I did not follow the ideal race line (mainly because of the crowd of other runners). So this tip can save you minutes!
I was training to try and get a sub hour 10k then went out for my long run today and ended up running my first half marathon, 2 hours and 32 minutes. Felt amazing just to run but would love to do a race after covid!
Fell way short of other similar length videos. Could have been done in 2 mins. There are guides but listen to your body and adjust as needed. Cue the music, done.
The strength training bit is key. I’ve been doing a 10K training programme, I neglected my strength training for 2 weeks and my hips started to really hurt.
I’ve started my strength training again. Especially some kettlebell squats and banded good mornings. Hips haven’t bothered me since.
Thank you for your useful advice. I just have one question: is the selection of the surface on which we train on a critical factor? Running 5K or 8-10K regularely on cement surfaces is tiring.
Please Autumn i need some few help with the intermittent fasting, due to working and sch,if i break the fast by 5pm what time is best for the eating window and can i go just 1 meal or reduce calroies to 1600-1800 during this fasting??
First marathon in October! Ran two half marathons and am ready to make the jump! I’m both excited and terrified
This video had some really good tips. Do you have any guides on nutrition. What to eat before a long run, during and maybe after please?
I will run my first 21k tonight. 711 run 2019. Godbless us all, runners.
Awesome information thank you sir and everyone that make this channel possible for us.
I’ve had two ACL surgeries on the same leg, I can easily run 5 miles in under 45min. I’d say I’m more of a weight lifter than a runner. I want to do a half marathon by the end of summer if not sooner. How should I train? I currently have 3 gym day, 2 run, 1 ruck, 1 cycle, and 1 rest day as my program
Request: I’m trainning for a half coming at they end of March, but I feel the shin splints, and even if I’m stand or walking, shins are mad, like getting mad mad, and I do strength and everything, my long runs are of 10mi currently and I feel I’m running out of time but my shins do not allow me more, I’m afraid I’ll get a fracture. Also, I can’t rest at work, my job requires me to stand and walk 80%, and go up and down the other 20% out of 6 hrs I get to sit 20 min. Please make a video that can help me he through this
Hi Nate.
How do i get information on running a half marathon. Thanks.
I have 46 days!
Im thinking of doing a half marathon by the end of February, im hoping i’ll be okay for it! I try do 5k everyday or 10k everyday & i keep switching!
I ran a my first half marathon last year and done it in 2:09. Im doing the same one again in 11 weeks and I haven’t even started training for it! I would love to get under 2 hours this year but even that is not enough to motivate me! I’m really struggling to motivate myself and get my arse into gear!
It seems the nutrition calendar link is broken. Is there another link? I’m running my first marathon next year and trying to calculate how much I need to eat before, during, after the race. It’s going to take me well over 2 hours to finish. I’m a slow runner/jogger!
Why do people try so hard to talk with their hands and move their hands a ton in youtube videos
Was able to run 3.40 miles today! Such a milestone for me. Doing 5ks and then 1/2 marathon. But always listening to your tips and my body. Thanks guys!
Hi if you are a fit person who runs 5km 3 days a week and visit the gym 3 days a week is 6 weeks enough time to prepare for a half marathon
Hey I really enjoy and learn from your videos and will love to have the free training guide.. I’m 42 years old and that half marathon is on my bucket list. Lol.. Please send to [email protected] gmail.com and thank you for your support
Great advice, just training for a half now; full next year maybe.
Is it a bad idea to train for a half marathon if I can’t even run a mile without stopping? I’m doing a 5k and am 4 weeks away from the race but struggle hitting the paces a lot of times because I have to stop and walk. What can I do to improve my long distance endurance? Also what can I do to keep my legs from hurting as much?
See you’re in the Bay Area what are some good running trails!?
Can i still run for half marathon for the first time if i only have 1 week to prepare? I believe i’m fit enough i do work out 3 times a week but not running. But i wanna try my first ever half marathon so im planning to do running in 1 week straight. Any thoughts on this?
Started with 5k, then 4 miler, then 10k, then trail race, then OCRs, now half marathon, the challenge keeps getting bigger thanks to you!!
Your videos are so motivating. I’m running 10K in a few days yet I’m motivated to get fitter and run further. Thanks for talking to us like normal people, and not like we’re Olympic athletes!
My tip to aid you on your way to your first marathon, pick a reasonably popular one with large crowd support and big race field. I completed my first marathon last year and it wasn’t a big one, the race field must have only been 30 athletes and therefore the crowds were non existent…..holy crap I struggled like hell having nobody to instil confidence in me and racing alone.
The crowds and other athletes are your greatest asset, use them and that finish line will become infinitely more easy to cross.
I think it was the NYC marathon that Anna ran where she was in tears because of the thousands of total strangers yelling words of support. That’s what I’m attempting to illustrate, choose a big event and smash it. Good luck all ♂️
Great advice, thank you! The half marathon I’m thinking about is in 10 months, so hopefully that will be enough time!
Hi sage, thanks for the video. Just wonder if is there any difference between this tips between half and the full marathon? It seems that it applies to both
Do you have any tips on how to dress for a half marathon?? I’ll be doing my fist half marathon in November at Las Vegas, NV. I enjoyed this video. Thanks
Hello, thanks for the video. It was really informative.
I have a question for anyone who can answer how long after a half marathon is it advisable to have physical relations with a partner? I plan to run my third half marathon in a different city and my SO will be with me. Both of us will be happy after I complete my race I just wanted to know how long I should wait, before I celebrate my happiness with her. Thank you.
How to prevent injuries during running….
Is knee supporter advisable for running……
What’s a good recommended mile Bass for people to start off if they’ve never really exercise before
Sir i am begginer and i want to complete half marathon in 1 hours please guide me
Thanks doing exactly this at the moment, so it’s really helpful!
Meeting my sub 4hr target and achieving my first marathon without injury were achievable due to this marathon training program “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). You will find a lot of details about diet, strategy, training courses and so on with this guide. The best part concerning this guide is the training courses schedule which guides you in the preferred distance you need to run on a certain day..
Yeah you don’t know how you’re body is going to respond to training so setting a plan is a bad idea, unless you add recovery time and disobeying the plan to the plan…
I’m a total newbie to running. I quit drinking alcohol 9 months ago due to the fact that I was way too dependant on it. I’m 45 and had been drinking heavily for about 28 years (drunk every night more or less drinking about three quarters of a litre bottle of gin a night and a few ciders to go with it. I wasn’t very well for the first two weeks or so, and I struggled badly to keep occupied so that I didn’t think so much about drinking. I found some hobbies to pass the time like learning French and Spanish and playing keyboards. The last few months I’ve found that going for long walks has helped clear my head and I’ve started to eat much better (I never used to eat when I was drinking) and after quitting smoking as well I’ve got BAGS and BAGS of energy. Tonight, I decided to break into a run during a walk. I actually ran non stop for two miles. I have NEVER done that in my adult life. I felt SOOOO GOOOD afterwards and that’s why I’m here. I want to learn more about running and training for half marathons. Despite basically being an unfit, sluggish alcoholic I always wanted to run a half marathon. One of my dreams when I was much younger was to run the Great North Run here in the UK. I’m now thinking about that again/ My ultimate goal at the moment though is to run the Kilimanjaro Half Marathon. I’m aiming to run it in 2021. I think next February/March will be too early for me. I’m going to do this!
Wanting to run a half marathon by January 2020! Starting running on July 1st!
I agree. Listen to your body and you end up climbing 35 floors Broadgate like me in 25 minutes. Stairclimbing helps running.
Listen to this expert! Eat a bunch of highly processed junk before and after pushing your body to the absolute limit. Lol. This dude knows next to nothing about nutrition. Eat fruit before the race. Want a great recovery smoothie? Check out Simnett Nutrition’s smoothie video.
Awesome tips. I’ve been running for 20 years, in the beginning I used to follow my body more, and It’s true it’s a best indicator than a training plan.
Also agree with the tip to strength core to help a better running.
Thank you and keep the good job please
Any recommendations for IT Band Syndrome and Glute Medius issues? Got up to 7 miles, but then started having severe issues as prefaced. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for tips bruh, deff need to plan out my long run, cause I just went for a blind run and got lost haha plus it started to pour raining. Good thing I brought my gopro with me so I can share my experience haha
I just completed my first ever race today which was a half marathon. I couldn’t even run one mile last year. Over this past year I’ve watched your videos over and over again for tips and inspiration. Thank you so much for everything!
Great video!! Doing my first half marathon in June and it’s my first race…. I’ve been running for years and though why not….
Thank you for your video. I will start training for a half marathon in May. I am a natural sprinter who has put a lot of weight on. What should I do for pre-training, nutrition etc?
Love your videos. You’re a great communicator with a wonderful personality, and so knowledgeable. Thanks so much! I’m going to crush my first 25k!
Well, thanks to The Run Experience for all advices and quick tips. I did it, 1h52’46’’ in the Half marathon of Paris.
This is a bucket list thing for me. I have no cartilage in my left knee. I want to do this for the Great Smoky Mountain (National Park) 1/2 Marathon and 5K. I know I won’t be able to run it but am planning on walking (speed) it. Any suggestions for preparation or precautions, knee wraps, etc that can help with impact or knee pressure? (I’m not a medical doctor btw…)
I lift 5-6 days a week. Will it be impossible to train for a half marathon? My plan is to run after lifting as an extended cadio session.
This is my first half marathon,i am 47,I’ve been at the gym on and off for around 10 years. I have always wanted to run a half marathon but thought I was two old, through the support of my family, i have been training, running 4 to 6 miles 5 to 6 days a week for 2 MONTHS. I’ve lost 10 pounds and feel amazing while training, does it get easier and what advise can u give me for my first half marathon which is only 4 weeks away
Hey, I pulled my hamstring back in October and now only upto 7miles of running, I’m running Brighton marathon in April! Any extra tips on training to get the mileage up and then tapering? This is my 1st marathon
I am running a half marathon Sept 30th of this year. I would really like some help on getting started. This was a great video!
I’ve decided that I want to run a half marathon and have 10 months to prepare for it. I’m currently out of shape and started running recently but it’s been very difficult. I’ve been running / walking 2 miles a day and averaging 28 minutes. Would love to get some tips. I’ve also started doing some CrossFitworkouts in my garage gym.
I enjoy rock climbing and I still want to do it occasionally even as I am training. Can I incorporate rock climbing as part of my strength training?
i actually ran my first marathron before i did any half marathron haha got a time of 4hrs and 22minutes which isnt bad i think since i never ran a half marathron before and was my first time running full marathron
Question? How are you able to figure this out? Do you guys run marathons? Because you don’t look like runners. Just wondering? No pun intended.
You’re amazing…just signed up for a half marathon yesterday and I’m excited!!
nice video! I just signed up for a Half Marathon, 3/3/2019! I have never ran in my life, I am 6,2 and about 185lb. 30yo. I was able to run 2miles @21 minutes today (today is the day1!), lets see how it goes!! I am open to all the ideas, from the youtuber or the followers…!
Love the video, just training for my first Brighton marathon, then off to Chicago!!
Got to put the time into it….leg time is important…even walking for 2 hours here and there
Can you address what to do when a runner is quad dominant? Thank you!
Absolutely agree with you … we have to listen to our body than a fix training plan schedule. I started running 3 months ago, 3 times a week 5 to 10 km, on 21th August 2018 I got an Half Marathon slot from a friend who could not attend already closed registration of Maybank Bali Marathon on 9th September 2018. It was my virgin Half Marathon and I finished it for 2 hours 24 minutes (BIB 50973), at my 55 years old.
I plan to run Full Marathon next year, but the nearest event I enrolled an 16 relay of 170K Ultra Marathon,
my route will run a 10 K continue uphill road with elevation gain 500 m, is there any tips for running it? Thanks a lot.
As a preparation for my first marathon, I read as well as followed this particular marathon training “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). My goal was a sub-4 hour marathon and I got it. Used this training plan to the last detail and had the confidence I needed on race morning to have thru 26.2 miles. It`s a great feeling in order to reach that goal. Committed runners should try it too..
Hey, I dont understand one thing with my legs that if I start running or jogging from the start of the workout itself, my calf becomes hard and I have sore ankles within a km, but if I start the running after 4kms of briskwalking, legs are fine. For your info I am training from last 2 months.
interesting points,if anyone else wants to learn about how to improve your running endurance try Sarparder Running Expert Starter (do a search on google )? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
I’ve signed up for Beachy Head Marathon in October 2020. My first trails marathon having ran Brighton Marathon in 2018 I believe it’s going to be a very different challenge. Any tips welcome x
I watch this video for 0:28 seconds and i see “half marathon time 1h04m”. That’s how far i run 10K!!??!!! holy smokes…
The best thing in marathon training is a flexible training partner. I personally noticed that last year because whenever one of us felt bad, it was the job of the other to motivate again. And in addition to that you will have the same running stories as your partner and can also talk, laugh and remember everything you went through together. In the end you even become good friends.
In the last weeks of your half marathon training, what do you do before your race day?
These guys are great! I started running 5k 12 months ago. I am now 58 years old and just ran in my first half marathon in Bali Indonesia in 2hours and 45 minutes.
Please don’t think I’m blowing a trumpet here or anything guys, but as a 2:42 marathon-er, and only having ran 2 in my life, the running channel has hit the nail on the head with this video! All useful and meaningful tips that I definitely did use during my training. Only thing i would include is… if you guys are worried and/or find it a mental battle rather than a physical battle… is to find a friend who maybe running one soon or maybe even a stranger who you find on social media thats close by and training for the same race. Or heck! maybe even join a club that host long based runs on ‘x’ day of the week. Clubs are SO SO cheap to join and its worth while as the Long runs mean EVERYTHING during training for a marathon! Happy running every one!
Hi Nate, just had a quick look on Youtube for a video about going from 10k to a Half Marathon distance. I couldn’t really find anything specifically relating to it. Any tips or video recommendations?
Hello there. Just discovered your channel.
I’ve been on the keto diet for the past 2 months, and into my 4th week in the gym.
I’m pleased to say that I have lost over around 17lbs in weight.
I was a fairly strong distance runner up until my early thirties, I’m 45 now and have been mainly inactive up until now.
I have signed up for a half marathon that takes place in just over 2 months time.
I’m doing mainly conditioning training in the gym.
Anyway to the point. At what stage should I be running over 10 miles in my training (currently doing one 5 mile run a week)?
And what do you recommend as a pre comp meal?
Great video, and I notice you’ve posted one about plantar fascitis, can’t wait to watch that I regret to say.
My first ever half marathon after an 8-year race hiatus. The half is in August 4 and I spur of the moment decided to do one.
Hey dudes and dudettes I just released a new video called “24 Hour Triathlon Nutrition Plan for Beginners” peep it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrLsMf7WuCQ
I had had been told how carbs were connected with weight gain and also generally to steer clear of carbohydrates, but yet had never thought as using them to lose fat. The number one idea behind the four cycle weight-loss solution is to really train your system to reduce fat for energy instead of just carbohydrates. It’s based on research into the higher than average carb eating habits of the Japanese and also their impressive long life expectancy. The investigation indicate that it’s their substantial carb-cycling dieting strategy that can help to go on remaining healthy into old age with a reasonable body mass index (reduced incidence of obesity).Read much more here https://truehealthreport.com/4-cycle-fat-loss-fat-burning-diet/
Without fail, each and every client of mine who followed the simple ritual I am about to show you lost belly fat EVERY-SINGLE-DAY.
[email protected] gmail.com I’m beginning my first half marathon training! If you’re still providing the free guide, I’d love one
Can you please do a video about protein powders for beginners??? If it’s worth it or not, whey or soy, when to take it etc. Also, meal prep ideas for students who are intermittent fasting would be so helpful!!! thank you so much❤️
Just ran my first half marathon and it was absolutely an absolutely terrible experience. Not because of the marathon but because of my stupid self. I was cocky as fuck, trained about a 1-2 weeks and thought it was gonna wasn’t gonna be that hard but boy I possibly couldn’t be more wrong!! My gameplan was to go slow and warm up the first 2k, then rush for 7k, slow down for 5k and rush the last 7k on pure willpower. So basically that plan went right out of of the window as I though I was going slow enough when I was suppose to go slow but in reality I was only going a few second slower. So I basically just blasted through the first 12k still feeling “okay” and going faster than I thought. But man..the sun was shining hard and somewhere in km 13-14 I was like: “Okay this not good, I have to slow a lot or otherwise I won’t be able to make this thing without stopping”.
So I went slower and in the next km, I had slow down tremendously and slow down even more and more, that’s when I knew I fucked myself in the ass. Then fucking grandpa’s and woman started passing me left and right, which absolutely sucked since I told myself beforehand I wouldn’t be that guy that slow down the second half and gets bypassed by everyone, and exactly that happened. So finally I thought I collected enough energy retain a normal runs speed again for the last 4k. Those last 3-4k was the worst fucking run experience I’ve ever had, it was like I was in fucking hell, the only things on my mind were that I wanted to get this fucking shit over with as quickly as possible and all the things I was going to eat and drink after this whole mess.
Anyway my main tip fir first timers is: Don’t be fucking cocky*, actually do the fucking training if you’re gonna try to run it fast. Otherwise you *WILL find yourself in a world of hurt and regret, and it’s not fucking fun.
I’ve done 9 marathons, and while I don’t think this video is bad, I just am so highly disappointed when you encourage people not to run if they can’t get rest or because it might cause them to have belly fat. Who cares about how your body looks!!! Care about being strong! Care about improving! Care about encouraging healthy competition!
I’ve also found that bloating in the stomach during training can be caused by an imbalance in electrolytes if you don’t fuel properly. And not getting enough fiber or not timing fiber properly.
Stacy sims also pointed out that marathon training for women has a significantly different impact on the body as compared to men. You can’t really blanket this subject with three tips.
TL;DR I really wish your videos on sports nutrition were more about being strong, and less about looking good.
Me, just learning to run at all lmao, here learning about marathons .
How much weight a week should I be losing while intermittent fasting? Bear down!
Been running now for 5 years. Im ready. I think. 58 years old. run 15 to 20 miles a week and strength train a lot. I’m a little nervous about my joints and back. Not a lot of pain just when I hit that 8 mile mark. I recover ok, but still, if I cant finish 13 miles, it will be a bummer. Im doing it regardless. Anyday before the run tips? Should I take any over the counter pain meds before my run? Leg me Know…………..
Good one, most people have no idea what overtraining is and the effect of cortisol.
“Don’t follow a plan. Let a plan follow you.” I am using TrainAsOne AI running app to have a plan that follows me. Since I am using it I am steadily improving my running abilities, and have prevented any running injuries.
My night cramps stopped when I took potassium citrate and Himalayan salt prior and during my long runs.
Hi I am trying to do intermittent fasting. I really need your help. Is my 3 day I accident ate I bite. Will my intermittent fast is a fail. Ok know is silly to ask I just hope to understand what will happen inside my body react when I had a bite.Waiting your reply I only had a bite of chicken.
I enjoy my fasting so far. Just some time I want to stick with what I want. I am not stress. Just want to know what will happen inside my body
Are you getting ready to run a marathon? Which one? Or maybe you have a question about training for a marathon that we didn’t cover? Let us know in the comments below ↓↓
I am training for my full marathon through the help of this marathon training “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). I now have a much improved plan to start again. I`m experienced in 5K’s and 10K’s and half marathons. Because of this particular guide, I`m now going to take the full marathon. I strongly recommend this fantastic training..
Great advice.
May I give my 10 pennyworth?
(All IMHO) gels nasty, sticky, expensive rip off as much of running stuff is (branded clothing, KT Tape…..) Instead of gels anything that tastes ok > won’t give you stitch/heartburn/won’t melt on a run not too sweet!
If you take your own hydration have a ‘suck’ type not a ‘pour’ type eg straw…tube…. cos pouring liquid down my throat whilst running is (hopefully) the closest I’ll ever get to being waterboarded.
Running jackets my best buy? A £6 Lidl ripstop one that I can shove into the pocket of my shorts! Most often a jacket is required for hanging about pre race or in case walking becomes a necessity during…. whatever… a packable jacket rather than anything else!
I went from 10k to 1/2 marathon to 25k to marathon to 50k to now training for a 100 miler. I do got one 50k, two 50 milers before my 100 miler. Thanks for all the advice.
Just did my first 15km Monday, hoping to try a half marathon in another month.
I would love to have a free training guide. I want to do a half in November in Victoria, BC. I am at [email protected] a
Great channel! Really well produced and presented. I`d enjoy watching even if I was a non runner. Keep up with the good work and most of all, Thanks! This channel is my go to source of all things running related.
when I am training for my Half Marathon and I push myself to run 11:30m/m instead of 12:15 to 12:30m/m I tend to get pain in my plantar fascia area. any info on how to fix this issue?
Going for my second Half as part of my trainning for my first Marathon, first Half in 2Hours 3 minutes.
I will be running my first marathon in April: London Marathon! I am following a training program but I’m worried I am not doing enough long runs at the moment… Any tips on how to know if we’re running “enough”?
I have 2 races 6 weeks apart so it’s starting to get to me now
Ok I’m doing my first half marathon in 2019 and iv set my self a time of 3 hrs. I know I can do 10 miles in just over 2 hrs and can run 5 k in 30 mins. Is this a good time to set for myself
ive done a half, i would do them every year, but a full……………….** off XD
Manchester Marathon 5th April. I’m aiming for sub 3.30…3.20 would be lovely!
Hi Anna you legend.
I watched your NYC Marathon video and wrote in the comments that I was going to do my first marathon; you were that inspiring.
I signed up for one where I live (Australia) and have been following a training plan ever since. Aiming for four hours, but will see how we go.
Been listening to Hall and Oates on repeat, thanks pal!
I`m training for my full marathon with the aid of this marathon training program “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). I now have a much improved plan to start again. I conducted 5K`s and 10K`s and half marathons and decided to take the next huge step towards the full marathon, and I also discovered a good deal from this book. I strongly recommend this fantastic training..
I am training to run a Sub 3:30 marathon in July at the Gold Coast Marathon on the Gold Coast, Australia or at Melbourne Marathon in Melbourne, Australia in October. I have signed up for both marathons and I live in Sydney, Australia so the Gold Coast one is technically in winter but Sydney is cold and Gold Coast is warm and humid. The past 2 years it has been 100% humidity at the start of the race so it is a challenge. I have two half marathon in April and May as training runs leading into the Gold Coast Marathon to get an idea of how the training is progressing
No matter how I train i can’t seem to get my v02max to improve. Until then I’m just gonna stick to half marathon
Training for Newport Marathon in April, 1st one after racking off 6 half’s. So true about the bad runs, hit the dumps after doing 16 miles for the first time, took a while to recover from that mindset.
I have signed up for 4 this year and they are Milton Keynes, Round Reading ultra, Berlin and Amsterdam (hopefully do the new parkrun the day before):-)
Thank you this was just the video I needed. I’m training for my first marathon, the Cybi Coastal Marathon.
I don’t care what they’re serving up at aid stations, I ALWAYS wear my hydration pack with my own stuff. I hate trying to slow my running to grab hydration, as it messes up my pace and breathing, and I love always knowing I can have a quick sip or gel when my body wants it, instead of when I come to a station, when it might be too little too late. P.S. I run in FL where it’s hot as hades, so a half mile to an aid station is the difference between hydration and heat exhaustion. Lol.
OMG a bichon at 7:47 Sorry, I have one and I’m obsessed with him!! I’m training for my first marathon in Pittsburgh in May. I keep wondering what in the hell am I getting myself into?
On my second marathon training cycle. My first marathon I dod the slow build plans and only did 2 20 mile runs towards the end before tapering and the thing I learned is that I hit my wall at mile 22 and the last 4 felt impossible. So my plan this time is to do longer runs early on to get comfortable with these distances. My race is in April and I’ve already done a couple 15&16 milers and already I feel my fitness increasing and my confidence building. Marathons are so much mental strength and that’s ultimately what will get you through what feels impossible.
Drink a lots of water before run…. Attend bathroom to light up…. And just before run take a half tea spoon of turmeric, pinch of black pepper, two table spoon of lemon juice and olive oil with warm water….
Timely video! I’m signed up for Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota in June to redeem my marathon attempt (failed due to undertraining) of 2012.
I’m about to do my first ever 50 miler (Beast of Burden, Lockport NY)….have really enjoyed all the advice and tips I’ve been able to get from your videos
I’m trying to beat my previous PB which 1.19.45.
I love to break 1.19 wall. But I am struggle when it come nutrition side. How foods are better for keep you going and strong, how to avoid over eating particular food or must have food after and before run. I am 182cm runner. So I an trying to my weight down, maybe 10st around 65kg.
If you could give some advice would be greatful.
Just finished my first month of training and did 14k in 1:20. Hope I can do the half marathon in April under 1:30
Good video but would really appreciate if there is a longer detailed information
Training for Brighton Marathon on April 2020. Had few setbacks with family commitments and a sore throat/cough last week which was annoying. Currently done 14 miles longest run in training. Its definitely tougher on the knees.
I am Currently Training for the Comrades 2020 Down Run it will be my First Comrades (Novice) (Ultra) (Nervous)
I’m going from 5km to 32 km oops. Pray 4 me. 3 months to prep
can you please do a video on speed workout for half marathon:)
Thanks so much, awesome vid, just whot I was looking for, I’m training for Manchester marathon
Thinking of running my first marathon this year in November/December, but I’m at 10k so far. Is it doable? Should I try running a Half first? Love your videos, thank you for the tips!
Thank you. I’ll be running my first marathon 1st August 2020:)
Training for the Napa Half Marathon on March 1st! I’m running a lot of trails and climb a lot on my training runs and have started seriously thinking about just keeping this up and going for a marathon maybe this summer or fall? I ran a marathon once before like 28 years ago now! So this will be like the first time again if I do it. Whole different me and different approach to running on a much older body. I feel great and know I can do it. Your channel is so much fun to watch. It’s very good inspiration!
I’m training for London 2020 which will be my 1st marathon…you’re videos are helping me big time
Step One: always walk/run/record down the middle of the pathway instead of staying toward one side. This allows you to maximize your usage of other people’s space.
Training for my first 100 at 40 yrs old. Podcast, music, and audio books keep my mind occupied.
Training for Brighton marathon in April, iv already had setbacks this year with getting ill, but I’m get back to it:)
Hey! I’ve been watching many of your videos on YouTube.
Quick question: Is it okay to run 2 marathons 2 weeks apart?
I’m running my 1st marathon ever on Jan 5th, 2020. Planning to run the other on Jan 20th. Is this recommended?
(Going to run 1st half Marathon this Saturday)
Hi Anna and Rick. Thank you for the tips as it’s greatly appreciated and I’m preparing for the Gold coast marathon in Australia. Can I ask once you’ve worked out your hopeful marathon running pace what do you do on race day? Do you try to maintain that piece the entire race or start slower and pick up the pace later? Just interested in your thoughts. Cheers guys.
A lot of grey area about calf sleves on long runs what is your opinion yay or nay?
I am training for the Southampton Marathon (having done the half-marathon in 2018 and 2019) and my training plans both advise me to work up to “long runs” of twenty miles before tapering. Question (bearing in mind I will be 68 in April) is that this leaves 6.2 miles or approximately 23% to make up on the race day. However, I am also advised to step up training (distance and/or time) by no more than 10%.
Further, I trained for the 10 mile Great South Run last year, and breezed it in 1:24:18, by training up to 12 miles.
I am wondering if it is advisable to get my long runs up to at least 25 miles before the big event?
such an awkward nerd, but ur face hole spits out some good knowledge at least.:/
As of tonight my race schedule for the 2020 circuit is popular Brooklyn half New York marathon, New York City half marathon, Marine Corps marathon, Philadelphia Liberty Bell challenge which is a half marathon on Saturday then full marathon on Sunday. New York City Marathon and 60 K
Hi running channel. Am in training for the Edinburgh marathon in May am really enjoying the training
Well timed video, stepping up to run my first marathon this year went for the Yorkshire marathon!
Someone once told me “No one ever runs Two marathons”…… Either you hate the first one & never run another one again-ORYou loved it & want to run many more. For me I’ll stick to 1/2 marathons thank you vary much.
I started training for my half marathon about 3 months ago. I run between 4 and 5 miles 3 times a week, with the occasional 8 miler. A couple of weeks ago I noticed this pain in my wrists on one side. The side facing the floor. I don’t clench my fists during a run and I do shake my arms out periodically. Why do you think this could be happening and what can I do about it? x
I’m running since the last 3 months and I did all the things you mentioned intuitively before I watched your video. Superb and accurate tips.
When I did my very first race, someone told me, “If you can run a mile, you can run a 5K. If you can run a 5K, you can run a 10K. If you can run a 10K, you can run a half. But a marathon is a whole different beast.” He was right, but I’ve been able to do it twice.
Thanks for the awesome content as always running channel. I did three half’s last year, 2 standalone and an IM 70.3. Currently training for my first full, Rock N Roll San Diego May 31st. Can’t wait.
Training for my first marathon, Paris, April 5th, it’s hard:) did plenty of 20 and 30 k’s
I’ve been training for my first full marathon: Los Angeles Marathon in March!
I am turning 42 this year guess what am I going to do 195 days into the year?
It would be a good idea to do 26.2 miles in one go, not racing anybody just a nice pace. That lets you know where the wall is so you see where you should take water
I’m running my first next Saturday in Calgary. Should be a nice -8C and I ran the course today (as a half marathon). Not the best tapering but had to finish breaking in my shoes. Hoping for 4 hours
Am training for Vancouver marathon, it’s my 6th marathon but this video is a good reminder on how to prepare
Thank you so much for your helpful video! What if my goal is just to finish a marathon in the allotted time? I’d like to see a video about people who have run a marathon who did NOT track their pace/time, but used creative cues to assure they could finish before the finish line “shut down”. Thank you!!
My partner and I are training for the Queenstown marathon (NZ) in November with our eyes set on the 2021 NYC marathon after that!
Thanks for the great videos! Can you do a video on the best clothing/gear choices for winter marathon running?
Doing my first full at Edinburgh in May and the training starts next week. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I know first and foremost is to enjoy the day itself, lap up the atmosphere and don’t go off too quick. Thanks for the tips, I’ll go and check your video on gels.
Garbage advice
Whatever the distance is that you plan on running you should double that for your weekly mileage total
My recommendation is 15 miles for the long run. It gives plenty of time to rest and recover. I agree that sleep is so very important.
Love meeting you guys last weekend, and looking forward to my half, fulls and 100km marathons this year. I reckon we were the two rare irish men at the event… loving the jackets and Tshirts will need to try and get some:)…
Not ready for a full yet, but I am signed up for my 2nd half in April and my goal is the same as it was for my first last year….don’t die!
Bugger. I just entered one five weeks away
On the plus side, I’m already running 13 mile runs every over week, and did ten miles this week with no problems. Hopefully I’ll be OK
Halfway through traininng for the Manchester marathon, my first ever! The longer recovery and even longer long runs took some getting used to but I’m getting strong and learning more and more every day about how my body responds to the training. Thanks for all the tips your channel gives!
Thank you. Very useful video.
My next and first marathon ever will be the TSC NYC Marathon in November. very excited … Hopefully I can stay healty until then…
Before that I will be running NYC United Half in 3/15/2020. Race course goes through Times Square. Looking forward to it
Thank you for this video! It showed me that I am on the right path. Training for my first marathon in April the Humana Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon.
So far I have run one half marathon, Maldon last year. I now have the Cambridge half before taking on the mighty London Marathon! Trouble is, I now have a knee injury but I’ve seen physio and I can run slowly and carefully (no more than 10m LSR at 10 mm). Luckily I have time to get back to where I should be!
Great vid. I’ve just started training proper for my first marathon in Windermere.
Thank you Sage for tips. Information shared by you is very helpful.:)
Running my fist half tomorrow… finished a 20k in just over 2hrs. Pray I am ready♂️♂️
I have signed up for my first full on the Gold Coast here in Queensland Australia in July 2020. I completed my first two halves last year but I know 1/2 + 1/2 =/= 1. Preparing my training plan as we speak!
Just one point that I would add is that the halfway mark in terms of effort is not at the halfway point but at about 32km. If you going to hit the wall this is where it will happen be mentally prepared to suffer a lot more in those final 10km.
I have my first half marathon in exactly 1 months time.
Could you please share your experiences running your first half marathon? What was your time? And what about your first full marathon? What was your time and experience?
Well shoot, I already run xc and I’m already doing most of this. Guess I should be set for a half marathon lol
I love how you’ve run a half marathon in the same time it took me to do a 10k!
In your training programs for the 1/2 and full marathon on your TRE app do you need any equipment and if so what are they?
This video is two years old but the advice is still great! I can barely run 5k atm, but wanted to know a realistic timeline to eventually run a half marathon (and maybe one day a marathon). This video helped! Thankfullly I already have a fait bit of strength training under my belt so that will be an advantage.
Try the opposite in Florida: Training for a winter marathon during the summer and fall where the temperature never drops below 26.5C and the humidity is always above 70%. Even on an easy run you are sloshing in your shoes and dehydrated by 17km.
As of now i’m halfway through training for my first 1/2 in March. So far so good a little knee pain is all. When I think of a Marathon it seems like its some mysterious monster out lurking in the mist. But then again this time last year I told my wife the same thing about a 1/2. Something to dream about though.
