We just released a NEW VID about getting your partner into *mountain biking*! Check it out: https://youtu.be/BdF7YEqbm7s
im literally 20k in debt with 10 useless hobbies…. why am i watching this
Now am going to look at my bag and be like, I’m so unprepared but I always plan for food, Quaker granola bars fill my pack, at least 2 for every hour I plan to ride plus at least 2 cliffs shots for every hour I plan to ride. Sometimes rainbow Rice crispies squares but I can’t have to many at the ready in my sports bra
Best way to get a bike if you have a lowish budget: BikesDirect.
Cheapest and greatest investment to become a mountain bike is Find your Local MTB group on Facebook and hit up some meetups! It’s how I improved and it keeps you motivated. I rarely had a bad experience with people on a meetup, everyone is helpful and patient
I like your jersey. Maybe I missed it but I didn’t see a link in the description for it. Found the website and ordered one though.
I’d actually never heard of Pole and really like the Stamina 180. At this point if you want a bike from them we’re looking at 10 weeks according to their site which as of today would put it in October. For me it’s now a tossup between the YT Jeffsy and the Pole 180. Thanks for the video.
I used to carry everything and the kitchen sink in my backpack. I rarely used any of it. And other people would just end up stuffing their crap in my bag. So, I tried to go bagless, but I do want to carry some items. I now use a Dakine hip pack. 1-2l of water, because I don’t like bottles on my frame. a basic first aid kit, because plasters are always useful plus it’s required at some races. bars I use Nature Vally protein & nut bars for the same reason Brian chose his bars I can get them anywhere, they’re cheap (compared to ‘sports’ bars) and they don’t give me heartburn:P. One tube with Pedro’s tyre levers and a co2 inflator strapped to, the bottom of my saddle. And one of many tools I’ve tried and the one I always come back to the Mineral Designs Mini Bar multi-tool. Magnetic so the bits don’t drop out. Standard sized bits, so I’ve swapped out the ones I don’t need on my bike for others put of my toolbox that I do use. Lightweight, unlike some multi-tools. Safe to carry in a pocket. And a nice long handle for leverage. I also use the Mineral Designs Barstow bar end chain breaker, but I’ve only ever had to use that once.
Thank You!! Just got first Mb and all the info is greatly appreciated
I only really came here to figure out a way to find trails to ride on, because I haven’t ridden on single track in my area. Trailforks is a great recommendation and I wouldn’t have heard of it if it weren’t for this video.
Just stumbled upon this as I just purchased my first mountain bike and pick it up this weekend! Appreciate your advice as it answered a lot of my questions! Subscribed!
I take offense when you say Edmonton is in the middle of the prairies…look at those trees! Come to Regina and see what true prairie blight is like.
Can be useful to carry stuff like plasters with you too. They can help keep you stay comfy with smaller cuts and grazes by preventing rubbing. They can also be used to help hold slightly larger slashes together if required in a pinch.
He said infinite bikes to choose from LOL this must’ve been pre COVID-19
Most of my local bike shops are full of D bags unfortunately so they were no help. Thanks for the video
This was sellout Video. Only about buying bikes. No skill advances
The Outfit step would be awesome. Like how to get a good helmet etc
I ended up buying the wrong bike, but I guess it was kinda intentional. I bought the best XC bike I could afford as a trail bike was WAY too expensive. I wasn’t even sure if I would like hitting trails, nor did I even know there were trails near me that was worth getting a trail bike.
I always carry my sawyer mini water purifier if I’m heading way out in the middle of nowhere.
I’m so happy about what you said about pedals. I ride at work and I’ve always had flat pedals with the slip in cage on my personal bike, other guys at work are hard-core about clip ins and I continue to resist. I have to break out the pedal wrench every time I ride at work, but its worth it.
Anybody know a good alternative to the stock tires on Specialized Rockhopper?! I just don’t hit the dirt that much, but always on the pavement..
1Prepare to crash
2Actually crash
3Fix your bike and carry on sending.
My friends told me im pretty good becauss starting off i learned to jump in 10 minute and i was good at it and now i compete and won 2 place worldwide all thx to my friend
Oh wow, my name is Taylor and ngl I got a bit spooked at 1:07 because it sounded like he said ‘Taylor, just for you’ xD
Great video! And I thought I carry a lot of things….:-) Gave me a couple of ideas of what I need to take with! What about your camera gear and battery banks, etc?
2Nd Hand, I’ve been riding a while now and, so far, have always gone 2nd hand, choose what you want ant wait for someone to be selling it online, if you know exactly what you want though, it might be better for brand new as it means you don’t have to be waiting for ages for what you want.
He just likes riding pole and now makes videos about which pole he likes the best..
i am actually a little bit in shock that linear actuator seatposts exist
When in life you have Santa Cruz dreams but only a Huffy budget
I once sat on a Orbea, i saw the fork travel and it looked like something for enduro, happiest seconds of my life
I carry a laminated copy of my Driver’s License with some emergency numbers on the back.
Starting MTB my first on trails, road bmx in the 80 freestyle also had a GT 91 or 94 MTB but never did a trail now I sold all my bike keeping my 85 mongoose frame lol and a 94 vertigo gt. Looking into MTB but got stopped on what bike to get between Specialized Rock Hopper or Trek 5 or 6 price wise
Hi
Can uput IMP info on as heading on video and point your finger at it? I heard the trailforks app as trailworks.
Thx for the advice on avoiding clipless pedals at the beginning. I am just starting out, and my rider friends have been recommending I get them.
A cleat bolt fell out on a ride I was on and i had no spares. Luckily a rotor bolt is the same thread pitch and I just took one off my rotor and was able to ride the rest of the day. Now I keep spares of both.
I’m pretty close to buying my first hardtail, I’m stoked. Got everything else and already know where to go test my skills, I’m stoked.
What’s wrong with a good old saddle bag for your essentials?
Great Video! And here I thought I carry a lot of things, but you gave me some ideas of things which I need to take with me. What about your camera gear, battery banks, etc.?
I have hard rock from 05, all I’ve ridden is cities and urban. Haven’t ridden for the last three years since I had my shoulder repaired. Thinking its time to move to a full suspension setup cause I live in Utah. I can do it all here. Thanks for a great vid!
Africa is not a country, where specifically did you get it in the continent of Africa. smh
Well I must say I didn’t see some of those items coming
I ride in the southern AZ desert. A good large tooth comb is an absolute necessity. If you know anything about Cholla cactus, you’ll understand what the comb is for.
Whats a good first Mountain bike within 400700 dollar price range.
I love the idea of the last thing, but honestly, I can’t pay 12 dollars a month
Personally I’m antisocial and there seems to be a lot of communication involved
Can carry a weight load of 400 lbs…. Shows 45 lbs instead…..
My local shop sells used, its the only one in the area that does so. He hooked me up and even fixed it for free when something came up a few days later. Great guy who stands by his used products
Step 1: buy a used bike that is a good deal for your price range.
Step 2: see cool 1000 dollar bikes and crazy trails.
Step 3: wish your bike was that cool but bike on anyway
If your just starting to ride I wouldn’t buy a bike over £500 (uk halfords but get someone who knows a out bikes to check it before you ride it halfords arnt the best at assembling bikes) because 90% of you will not be riding after a year and it will only sit in your garage. If you do keep riding after a year then trade in your old one for a beast of your choice.
I’m going into my bike shop I’m a make a choice come Monday it’s between the Specialized Pitch Comp 1X or Specialized Rockhopper Comp 1X. $700 $750 price tag which is good for me.
I started with a 200€ “Mountain” Bike. It had a shock and handle bars with horns.
Always dirtbiked, love snowboarding and idk why but bicycles never really caught my eye. I just recently picked up mountain biking and I love it. Live near Lake Tahoe in California and mtb out here is a dream! Great tips for a beginner like me:)
I feel ill the day after a really long ride, a cross between brain damage and a hangover.
I a nice hard tail, but I live in a place with a lot of roots and rocks and was wondering if I should get a full suspension
It has all I need nice vid though has good advice and can really help!
This is great advice.
I did exactly what you suggested here 4 months ago and I demoed a mid range Trek Fuel EX8, (Trek is all that was available locally ) and I loved it.
Coming from BMX, Motocross and then the early 2000s mtbs to now…
Anyway,
8 demos later and they applied the money spent on the demos toward the cost of buying one so I got the base Fuel Ex 5 (still not cheap 2k no dropper and after using one on demo EX8 have to have one asap).
Bottom line is I now have a capable trail tool and know what the frame is capable of, can upgrade the parts as I outgrow them.
Thanks for the advice!
Don’t ask newbies to consider their own fitness, skill level or budget in getting started. Those are irrelevant
If you are in shape but tired of the climbs and still have descending skills and want to enjoy all of the rides all of the time get an e-bike. I love my Specialized turbo-Levo. Same price as a regular higher-end bike.
When I bring my pack I usually have a shock pump in it. I like to tinker and try different setups.
Great advice. Visit your local bike store and talk to them. I work in the industry and it’s funny how many people buy a bike online that’s completely inappropriate for the local trails. Support local shops and they’ll make sure you’re looked after in return.
Where is the little rachet set from at 2.08? Please and thank you:)
Wintershoes that i bought are clipless. Not that big of a selection in wintershoes. DIdnt know you cant use them on flats that effectively xD
As far as pedals go I would say it is worth investing in some metal petals instead of keeping the plastic ones.
I stopped watching as soon as he went to the shop. I know how to find the shop.
What do you guys think of what Jeff caries in his bag? Is he missing anything? Let us know!
I think this might be fake. Who carries tire plugs in their bag?
Toilet paper is definitely an essential. I keep mine in a ziploc so that it stays dry even in wet conditions.
Great video, always best to be prepared for anything.
I like the tool management in the background, especially the wrenches and drivers where did you get those magnetic holders or did you build them yourself?
Not what I expected. Better than I expected. Mini hands part killed me.
In addition to what you carry you could have an spare tubeless valve, valve core, presta to shraeder adaptor just in case you have to use a gas station air pump, derailleur hanger
You should carry a pen/marker with the tourniquet so you can write the time on it that it was applied.
We all just gonna glaze over the fact Jeff said he likes to paint his fingernails?
So that CO2 head can close off the air after use so you don’t waste air?
How much are the kazoo’s? Been using free braaap sounds for years:)
All of my crankbrothers gear breaks. Two sets of pedals: broken bearings in less than a year. I had to carry another multitool to fix my crankbrothers multitool when it got loose. I had crankbrothers handlebars…. changed them before they they snapped and killed me..sorry. no more crankbrothers for me…
Nobody wants to hear about you using the bathroom, period!
I’m not good enough for any of these upgrades to make any difference.
6:07 “Let me know if you guys have any questions!”
WHERE DO I BEGIN#[email protected]#!?
Can you make a review of santa cruz hightower lt vs yeti sb150 need help guys
5:17 that is GOLD! I thought it was a pipe at first hahahaah
excellent video.. i’d like to ask though, if a carbon hardtail frame has a weight limit (95kg) and my weight is JUUUUUST below it, would it be better strapping everything on the downtube rather than in a packpack on my back or in a saddle bag? would going a bit (2-3kg) over the recommended weight (rider+gear) be bad for the frame?
or is the weght limit including ALL weight attached anywhere on the frame? cheers
Have you ever used that pack pliars to remove a tire? It destroyed the bead on my tire when I used it.
Haha i was just looking for some mtb gear and i just found your channel perfect timing.
Amateurs 😉
I don’t have a car and live in Nottingham, I set out at around 7/8 am to get to places. Depends on where I am going. I am to be at places before 12, spend about 6 hours there, then head back.
Journey usually consist of a few hour train and an hour cycle from the train station to the trail center, bike park or dig site. So I pack pretty much everything.
Derailluer Hanger
Shock Pump
Pump
Multi Tool Topeak Alien
Two chain links and speed link tool
Two inner tubes
Puncture repair kit
Two liters of water
Pack of protein bars
First aid kit
20,000 mah Powerbank
GoPro
Waterproofs
Coal Hand warmers
Spare Gloves and socks
Hiplok Gold
Rag / Towel
I only carry it there, I hide the bag in a bush or ask a trail center to look after it. Never thought about gear cable, one has snapped before but I got away with using the limiters and pushed it 2 gears in.
You probably don’t want to know what’s in the bag you guys sent to Bobo
Missing:
Turkey sandwich
Rod Stuart greatest hits CD
Emergency contact info for B.w. Bobo.
Just put the EDC frame back a little in the steerer tube…
Some considerations:
1) The best thing before going to a store is to look for people and groups already into MTB. Then you’ll get a clear idea about bikes/geometries/price points and where to put your money. It’s important to tell n00bies that highest price tag does not mean the best experience. Like: if the n00b is really a n00b he’ll won’t profit much spending money in a SRAM XX-1 or Shimano XTR (m8100), he’d do great with a NX or a SLX.
2) Emphasis in protective gear: good quality helmets, glasses, gloves, knee and elbow protection (sorry, English is not a native language for me but in Brazilian Portuguese it is ‘joelheiras/caneleiras’ and ‘cotoveleiras’).
3) Many people who want to get into MTB know how to ride a bike in urban areas. In civilized places biking inside the town does not involve jumping obstacles, ‘finding the best line’, avoiding ditches and gutters(??? again, in Brazilian ‘calhas’) so… better to start slow, asking for help of veterans and even looking for personal instructors in order to learn the basics. Where I live it’s quite common to bunny jump potholes, deal with speed bumps, choose lines to avoid gutters, etc… Not to mention the biker hunt season when we have to survive bus drivers, taxi drivers, etc…
4) Take care of equipment. Pay attention to the breaks, in case of air forks and shocks don’t forget to see if pressure is ok, if they’re not leaking oil… look for the right tires pressure… keep bike clean.
5) Keep bike revised… Chains wear, cassette cogs wear, fork and shock seals wear… periodic maintenance is necessary.
And… I personally don’t like clip pedals… I acknowledge that they allow energy conservation and enforce right movements but… the idea of being stuck to the bike during an incident does not attract me…
I’ve personally been using a camel back bum bag for the last 2 years and haven’t thought about using a backpack since so much easier on your shoulders and is perfect for upto a 4 hour ride
“The only part that touches the ground!”
Me looking at my shoes
Can you make a video to explain how the 26” inner tube works on 27,5 and 29 wheels
I carry zip ties also but I also carry Velcro strips. Because I broke my saddle and Velcro made it stay because the zip ties just snapped
No cell phone? Domino’s might have a hot spot on your trail!?!
For muddy wet leafy conditions what tyres. Decently fast rolling.
lol is used way to much. I actually laughed out loud when you played the kazoo!
Wrist rocket. Good ergonomics or bad for the environment; your opinion, go!
Love the 2-stroke sound! Can you add some smoke and castor oil smell too?
I don’t have a kazoo or tiny hands in my pack but I do have that Crank bros M19 multi tool and pair of glowing bike nuts for night rides:)
And the even funnier thing is he really does ride with a kazoo, the whiskey and a sling shot. The Winnie the Pooh TP is a must for sure.
Bet that whiskey bottle works great as a back protector as well. Protection and pain killer all in one. Great video as always.
I keep a couple of extra baseball cards to replace the one taped to the chain stay, slight touching the spokes for that moto sound.
Haha I’m glad I watched the whole video. Invaluable tips. Serious and some not… Or maybe…
Never thought of just using a 26″ tube for all the different wheel sizes. That is cool.
26 inch inner tubes will extand too much and get thinner on a 29er, it can easily cause pinch flats
I like that you made a complete joke out of what’s in my bag segment
One of the good things about our trails is that you don’t need a pack. Also with there being no rocks, I’ve yet to flat. And I doubt it will ever happen. Although next week I’m supposed to be riding in St. Louis which has rocks. So I’ll have to get my shit together for sure.
We need a whole video of Jeff just talking about how to make dirt bike kazoo noises
What’s wrong with the computer in the background, someone forgot to put a picture up lol
What’s the best rear option if I’m running an Ikon 2.35 in the front. I’ve currently paired it with a Crossmark 2.25 at the rear. I actually need a new tyre combo for my Cannondale Rush 29. Mostly ride dry, loose over hard trails. Thanks.
Hey liked the video thanks for posting them and if i can make one suggestion with the tourniquet would be place it above the elbow and or knee.
That tick key is amazing. It’s a must if you walk your dogs in the woods. Never had to use on myself but many times on my dogs.
The tick tool is a great idea. I just noticed a tick warning sign on one of my local trails.
So I’ve binge-watching all your videos. Awesome bro keep it up. Thank you
im gonna swap my fork because it was unlocked and the preload on none and didnt compress, sending me to the emergency room
You guys shall see that brand new Fully suspended bike, I think its amazing O.O https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N39uwTykTQk
you might want to add chew-able Pepcid, 800mg of vitamin I and claritin. weights nothing and the acid reflux can crush a day.
How’ve you been going with the Topeak Ratchet?? Been considering adding it to the kit, but haven’t found many reviews about it After some use…
What multi tool do you all like in 2020 if i dont have one at all? also what do you all carry for tubeless tires? some plugs? what do people have good luck with? this seems nice https://www.evo.com/mini-pumps/lezyne-tubeless-co2-blaster?image=179389/708308/lezyne-tubeless-co2-blasterjpg&gclid=CjwKCAjwqJ_1BRBZEiwAv73uwLKT_ofh7Z29WOhVhpAWaTZ01AoJgDQVGH70wBwEE9LPycwb0_4zOhoCGlYQAvD_BwE
what was that gel you use during your XC race? is it something to keep in a pack to replace the nature valley? i enjoy the chewy granola bars…..sorry for commenting about the gel on this video but i just found your channel and found my love for mtn biking again and have been watching your videos in random order, TIA
I’m liking my bbb multi tool, it is small and compact and has everything I need including a good sized chain tool, spoke wrenches and every hex wrench you can think of for a really light tool
Could you clarify on mountain bike helmets? Why do crosscountry pros always use road helmets with no visors (with a few exceptions)? Yet, manufacturers label helmets with visors for mountain biking. Thanks in advance.
Hey mate.. tourniquet goes as high as possible on the affected limb! Hopefully ya never need it! Good vid bud.
What about a gold/silver emergency blancet? Package is small and weight is low. And if isn’t for yourself, you vcan help always someone else with it.
Tyres are the only thing that touch the ground.
My head and left shoulder: are we a joke to you?
I have a hydration pack and inside theres a couple gel/chews, flat repair kit, swiss army knife, lighter, cell phone, disinfectant wipes, bandaids, bear spray, allen wrench set and a philips/flat head screwdriver.
Translation: Spend the money on a higher build to begin with… so you don’t have to waste money on upgrades.
I bought the Dynaplugs after I saw them work perfect for someone else. I loaned it to someone with a flat and it popped out. I have not tried it myself yet. I did get a flat on my gravel bike and tried to fix with the Stan’s plug. It was so hard to push into the hole, that I pushed it through the sidewall too.
I haven’t had any flats on my MTB since I went tubeless about 3 years ago.
I have an idea, you attach the kazoo to a mini fan and you put that just somewhere in the frame and boom, dirt bike
What I carry:
Inhaler
Patch kit
Tire levers
Multi tool
Extra master link
Im more of a don’t fix it if its not broke kinda guy. My wallet thanks me.
I’d like to see a response video (with Blake maybe?) where he says “…but I can’t afford that” to each of these upgrades and then comes up with a cheap/free (even if it’s awful) solution.
I carry an extra r
Shifter cable and carry a for nail clipped to cut the cables
Thanks for sharing Brian. I don’t think it’s a lot you carry in your bag. A tiny bottle of WD-40 can keep things quiet and smooth on rough rides:-)
Tourniquet is applied on the highest possible point on the arm/leg.
Should should have a tubolito spare tube. Much smaller / lighter.
I’m curious about how much I should be looking to spend I’ve been looking at some solid used bikes going for 2k but it’s also my first bike should I go for it or should I put my money into a cheaper bike? Riding in Massachusetts if that helps I’m also 6’1 if that matters I’m completely clueless on bikes.
Add a couple Magnum condoms to the pack just to be extra safe
Anyone have a bike under 330 dollars that will last me and get me started on some basic trails
for a ride shorter than 50k i take only water and like two snacks. On longer rides i take two bidons and more food. No tools, no locks, not a spare tube. I ride around 100k from home max, so its easier to call someone from family to pick me up, than carying all that kilos of equipment. And look of the bike is important for me as well. You wont buy 5k usd bike just to strap stoopid bags all around. And the last thing money. On every bike i have 20usd inside handlebar grip in case i would not find any family member to drive me home and thats pretty much everything i carry.
Backpack but since all my rides are 1+ hr or so I leave it in the car.
WOW now Feel what I carry is a little light compared to you. What about a whistle for signaling people to where you are located just in case?
Problem with most gps tracking device on bikes is that smart theives will locate it and dump it
Am I the only one who brings an extra bike with me just in case everything breaks?
So many of these items are crowdfunded items in this “Must Have” list have either failed to reach their goal or have horrible ratings in Amazon.
Stupid question: Why do you carry a spare tube? You are Running tubeless or not?
Hi, I’m really newish at mtbing and upgrading. so I’m sorry if I’m not using the proper ediquette (or however that’s spelled). but my question is. I have a iron horse quantum 2, it has a 3 gear cassette at the crank, am I able to take that off and put just one like and oval one, and just remove that gear set up entirely, would I just have to adjust the chain accordingly? I’ve been trying to research it but I cant find anything and I just want to know if I can before I do. Or is that just dumb jahah
What brand of shirts were you wearing at the beginning of the video?
Good stuff, I am also a ‘mtb prepper’ and carry way too much, but work as a mtb guide every summer so have seen murphy’s law play out. Couple things I do different though;
Derailleur hangar is zip tied and taped to my seat rail so it’s always with the bike instead of packed somewhere.
I carry pretty hefty first aid kit but that should be determined by what first aid training you have.
Shock pump; working as a guide it is very useful, personal riding not really.
Patch kit; the rubbers brand one that comes with their tubes take up pretty much zero space.
Small USB charger; when you’re riding with someone who’s phone dies it’s a pretty big relief when I pull out a charger! Although a little ‘hack’ for riding with a phone: airplane mode extends battery life a lot and you can still use trailforks (if you DL’d the region) and take pictures.
This has got to be the first criticisms I’ve read of the one up system, interesting!
Like any other sport, try it before you fully commit and spend a ton of money. Get a used hard-tail (cheaper & simpler than full suspension) and start riding your local trails. This will help you decide if you like the sport and also figure out what kind of bike you will want/need in the long run. Or you may decide the sport is not for you at all. Either way you can probably sell the used bike for close to what you spent on it. ****WARNING: DO NOT start with a cheap Walmart/Target “mountain” bike they look like the real thing but they are NOT actually made for rough terrain, and will pretty much guarantee you have a bad experience. Look for brands like Trek, Commencal, Canyon, Cannondale, GT, Giant, etc. plenty of good used options out there. Good advice in the video about using flat pedals to start. I’ve been riding for 20+ years and have no need for clip pedals.
Does age matter, I mean, will others judge me on when I start?
Can I start with a regular bike, or would that damage it?
Sorry about the questions.
Was that a downhill Kazoo or enduro? Too far away to see……so……..anyone? Asking for a friend.
Excellent tutorial of what’s important to carry when riding hard anywhere in the world. Much appreciate it!
How often do people get flats? I’ve been riding for 4 months now, still haven’t had one. I’m obviously not riding has hard as everyone else, but are flats so common?
I carry as little as possible! Hopefully I won’t regret that l
If my ride is under two hours I carry a water bottle. If my ride is over two hours I stay home and watch Youtube instead.
Yeah, was gonna ask if you use any spot gps. Definitely worth having… As you get older, you’re risk assessment kicks in and as they say in Ireland, it’s better to be looking at it than looking for it.
Duct tape wrapped around a credit card. I don’t carry a detailed first aid kit, but i carry a few oversize bandages and white sports tape wrapped over a credit card. Most scrapes and cuts can wait til you get back to the car, but a deeper gash might need attention. Duct tape can be used on blisters if you have to hike a bike for long with wet shoes it happens.
Just starting mtb this past summer so not a bunch of official stuff, but some crucial bits and bobs:
-roll of 1in wide Gorilla (rim) tape
-zip ties
-allen keys for every size on my bike
-tire levers
-27in tube
-disposable shop towels and gloves
-alcohol prep pad for brakes and whatnot
-standard camping multitool w/ pliers and knife
Crankbrothers HV hand pump and Topeak Digital pressure gauge
-water and snacks
Have fun riding boiz!
I’ve known several people that heavily weigh the paint job. Try happily admit they don’t like the bike as much but live the look so they happily own it
2/10
Video started out well but turned basically into a commercial for Pole. Keep your sponsored stuff. Not interested in that kinda stuff.
I carry a multi-tool, a swiss army knife, and sometimes water.
Look at buying a good used mountain bike! You can find some steals for the same price as a new bike. I bought a 2010 trek full carbon fuel 9.8 for $800 today which was a lucky find but if you’re patient you can always get an amazing deal.
Brian you should put together a MTB pack kit for sale. People would probably buy a pre-packed kit. Good video with honest reviews
One thing to consider I started carrying Parktool TB-2 tire patches. I’ve been saved with one on side of the trail, and I decided that it’s not a bad idea to have them in my kit.
I carry packets of BleedStop powder, you can get it at the supermarket, it’s smaller than a tourniquet. More for hometown trail rides closer to modern transportation and hospitals. I keep a tourniquet in my bikepacking gear though!
I mostly just ride our short tracks so don’t carry anything like you have as it’s not too far and downhill if something drastic happens to the Car parks. I have the onetool in the steerer tube. I do carry something you don’t and that is a snake bite kit with a spare elastic bandage and zip ties which incidentally you can link together for an emergency tourniquet
Just wanna share a story real quick:so today i said i wanted to upgrade my ‘drunk bike'(slang for that shit bike you use to go to the shops and don’t mind if it gets stolen). So i had parts laying around and i put gears and 2 proper brakes on.Now,i wanted to meet up with some buddies after taking something from the post office, but i didn’t have much time.I started pedalling harder and along with the annoying front wind i start hearing a ‘ting’ sound like something hitting my frame. It was a 2 inch screw,so i take it out, take the wheel out, check both the tire and rim and put a new inner tube in.After about 120 bumps with my mini pump:’PSSSSSSSSS’ air getting out, flat tire again.I take it out, find the hole, take a patch(the vulcanising kind, not the auto adhesive ones)fix the tube, check for leaks and put it back in.I manage to inflate it to around 1.7 bar and call it good enough to get me home and after giving directions to some tourists:”psssssssssss’ it lost air again. So i put the flat wheel in the bike and walked home.
You could almost fit all of that in a phanny pack? Have you tried any?
I run 1 bottle in my cage and 1 bottle in my phanny pack usually.
An emergency survival blanket. They are small, weigh nothing and work great.
In the age of tubeless tyres Schwalbe procore is dead on arrival
You for got one mager roll facter when it come mountain bikeing I have learned the hard way bring extera water on hand if it’s a short run are a long run i have one fresh water bottle and 3 extra water bottls on hand you never know
Regarding personal protection to start on day one….1a). Helmet (obvious reason). 1b). Protective eyewear a branch or leaf can scratch damage an eye (not to mention bugs) and can cause serious damage…then the other items as you advance gloves, knee, elbow shoulder pads, maybe a full face mask helmet if you plan on getting a lot of air.
Kitchen sink! Ahh don’t forget the fairy liquid!!!! Ahhh and a tea towel of shire horse breeds!! To throw over your shoulder when your putting the dishes away!!!
Great video! But honestly, good maintenance and the money put in quality hardware instead of the periferals will take you through the ride. If i went for a bike packing.. then ok.. just saying, love your channel <3
Tourniquets save lives! Glad to see someone with it ALL the time!
1:53 I reccomend not to cut it on the trail. You can just use electrical isolation tape and make a loop at the end and tide it / use zip ties. When you get back to your car, you can cut it wit propper cutters.
4:39 Tire lever i highly reccomend use only plastic one. Its light and doesnt damage the wheel.
6:22 Huge expensive pump. I reccomend to use some that ends up with the hose and has 2 type of ventiles. I have a pump that costs me like 25USD.
7:45 Place your backpack on the ground and put the small pieces on the bag. When you finish, they will be there… 😉
11:10 You have really too many tools with you. Just find yoursef one big multitool kit, plastic lever, repair kit with glue for fixing small holes in the tubes, good pump, spare tube and you are good to go. Leave the air pump in the car.
12:15 I reccomend to get just basic med kit. (Isothermic foil, some sterile cussions, hydrogen peroxide for cleaning the wounds, something for desinfection of deeper wounds, something to close the wound i prefer Omnistrip from Hartmann; very useful small cheap thing). You can stop arterial bleeding even using your spare tube. I reccomend to visit some good first aid course.
12:55 LEARN HOW TO TIDE SOME REAL KNOTS. Youtube is full of good advices. 😉
Solution for Acid Reflux: Preparation: Squeeze 1 Lime or Lemon in a 1 Gallon of Water. Pour 2 Table Spoons of Apple Cider Vinegar ( Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar) in your Bike Water Bottle. Fill the rest with the Lime or Lemon Water Mix. Shake it. Drink this Drink and love what happens. INSTANT ACID REFLUX GONE‼️.
Don’t take the Gallon of Lemon/Lime Water with you on your bike. Not wise.
I use an altoids tin. You can actually fit quite a bit in there if you mod it a little bit by like bending the corners and lid and stuff. But I’ve got everything I need in there. I don’t carry a tube, I know I should, but meh, I’m tubeless and I’ve got a tubeless repair kit
What rucksack is that? I see it is a camelbak but what model?
Plug a specific brand early in the video that is irrelevant and a distraction to new riders
who still carries a tube around when riding tubeless. i havent had a flat since i changed to it but i still carry a tube for unknown reasons
Theres 3 points of contact for me, my 2 wheels, and my dropper post cable it’s to long!!!
if you are popping tires so easy get thorn proof ones i got mine from giant and i use to pop 1 tube every 2 days and with this thorn proof tube i havnt popped a tube in over a month and i go up stairs alot
I had the weirdest commercial before this… A hefty commercial with a (old) mom talking like a teenager about drunk shit…
Should I get the standard super 2r or is the mips model worth the extra money?
Saw this video on gnbn where doddy put a cleet instead of one of his disk rotor bolts dunno if it wld work but it’s worth a try
Some good quality flats & a pair of five tens to keep you glued to the pedals are a must, also dropper post makes so much difference.
I think i will buy this helmet and the pro pack. So cool!:D
Would be grate if you could include at description all the items see on video.
What do you use to carry your spares and tools on a ride? Let us know!
Does anyone know where to buy the e*thirteen valves i can’t find them. thanks!
This 2 in 1 helmet is very nice but also very, very expansive….
Spoiler: Buy an expensive bike, then throw half of the parts away and buy expensive new and better parts.
This is the best stuff I’ve ever seen! I needed this before Christmas.
Pro pack is pretty cool idea! and the Helmet is slick, would be good for the big climb\descent rides!
started out in the early 90’s on a cheap 12 speed K-Mart bike with a cheap spring fork, then got an 18 speed Pacific with a better fork from target. now I have a 2014 Giant talon, yea I love hardtails.
I loved this video it’s great to know what essentials to carry thank you
Narrator:..this lock (Ziilock) is unbreakable…
LockPickingLawyer: This is the lock picking lawyer. I’m going to get the pick that Bosnian Bill and I made.
https://www.iptvsbox.com/ 72hours trial account watch live TV and movies free, what are you waiting for???
A lot of this sounded like a commercial. Too much crowdfunding and false language. “As crime and theft are on the rise”?!
How about two hidden needles in the seat that inject a deadly toxin if the wrong or no combination is entered into the keypad? Or what about hidden spring loaded razor blades in the grips? I’m looking for an anti-theft device that will fuck somebody up if not outright kill the piece of shit that tries to steal my bike.
Guys, I am gonna start mtbing and going to mainly ride whister. I have $400 to spend what should I buy? Dont tell me I need more money 400 is enough to get something decent
Also med kit has come handy for people i ran into on the trail. Guy broke his nose on McKenzie river trail
I can’t see why anyone would wish to buy a locking system that DEPENDS on an App to lock and unlock the bike. I have seen Apps spontaneously disappear from the store and my phone as companies remove them or go into bankruptcy. This happened to me with a device that lasted about 1 year in the real-world market. The device became non-functional because the App was removed and no longer available. Neither the company nor anyone else that I contacted could provide a copy of the App (like in an.apk file) that could be used since it was no longer officially available.
Similarly for Apps that REQUIRE joining some sort of group or affiliation that could be dissolved at any time by third parties totally out of the control of the customer.
The suction cups can degrade over time and suddenly lose their suction. Imagine your bike falling off the car while driving 70 mph down the highway. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.
I absolutely don’t need a bike computer, life is already complicated enough and making it worse won’t make it better. On the other hand, the minimalist bike wall mount would actually be useful.
Great and Thank you So Much and We get in to 5G internet now So we need videos in Real Best Full 4K 240fps Resolution quality and also The Sound system in Real Best Stereo Full HD Resolution quality clarity 3D surround, soon please.
I have been mountain biking and racing for years and I still loved this video
Can anyone vouch for the protective abilities of the Bell Super 2r?
If you are ever in New England you should ride the Kingdom trails in Vermont or Highland Mountain bike park
Someone tall me that the Bell 2r is not the best option. Because in crashes the accesorie go to shit
Bruh I’m looking for a full suspension frame so I can convert my hardtail, but I’ve got no clue how.
Neil, What watch and band do you have? It looks like a fenix 5. I have one as well and really like the look of your band. Thanks!
I have a few spots. My hydration pack, seat pack and top tube pack. They’re all sturdy and hold anything and everything I need
What’s a dropper post used for? Why do you need to drop the saddle quickly and then back up quickly?
If you close your eyes, it sounds like Russell Brand giving mtb upgrade advice
I went with Tubeless TIres and new Rims, then Stamp 7’s Large for my size 13 feet:)
Sorry to piggy back but do not buy anything from BikeDescent. They sell crap which is overpriced and are impossible to contact. The BikeDescent website is basically a device to rip us off.
Buy a first bike thats nice enough to enjoy but affordable enough to loan to a friend you want to get into the sport when you buy your next bike.
I’ve had the same continental tyres on my bike for nearly a year an they’re still looking new, I ride all terrain everyday. I shit you not I’m in love
I brought a second hand coyate hard tail and had nothing but problems lmao it was my way to work but back to the good old walking to work as ant got any more money to put into it the Joy’s of buying second hand
@BKXC @ 3:40 cleat bolts are the same thread as rotor bolts, so you can replace one rotor bolt on each wheel with a cleat bolt and you’re carrying two spares that you can’t lose.
“the only parts that touch the ground” well, my face after my first ride… I’m bad at it
so i live in Edmonton as well so i immediately followed you because i want to get into mountain biking and didn’t think Edmonton had decent trails
I had black nailpolish in ma bag to cover up frame/fork scratches. edit: got many weird looks for it xD
Is there a modification to keep my bum from hitting the ground??
Number #1 upgrade has to be… yourself. Loic Bruni or Sam Hill could make even the worst bag of bolts quite fast. Training costs next to nothing so on a cost to performance ratio it wins every time.
Buy a cheap bike, get rid of everything exept the frame, buy new parts.
FANTASTIC
Hi Martyn, it was good to meet you in Whistler last summer, but I doubt there will be a crank works this summer…
Take care!
I replaced my drop down seat post with suspension seat post and 740mm handlebar with 640mm. And I’m very happy with my choice.
Not only do I ride with an extra derailleur cable, but I also pack SRAM syringes and DOT fluid because you never know when the brakes need an on-trail bleed.
Me: “Dad my Maxxis Tyre is broken. Can I get a new one?”
Dad: “We have tyres at home”
Tyres at home: 26″ Worn out street tires
Great vid. I ride MX and Enduro motorcycles also and use a Kreiga R20 for every 2 wheel ride I have including bicycles. Harness system is way better than anything in the hiking/biking market. Rock solid.
Me getting a brand new bike 10 years ago: i love it I’m never gonna have to upgrade it:))
Me 10 years later with the same bike: i love it and desperately have to upgrade it, but i got no money:”’)
Great stuff, hope you ride near me! To counter acid reflux/GERD it’s partially the stress of exercise, and today’s energy choices are almost candy/cake like. Use that ziploc bag for apple pieces, banana dipped in honey, trail mix and ta da Doublemint gum! True story, one stick of gum will calm your stomach. Noted you’re big on sleep, sorry but you have to ‘pay for quiet’ today, as campers are idiots, they could care less about noise. Even in a hard shell, with BOSE headsets, you really have to scope out a decent nights sleep.
I just purchased a Fuji Nevada 3.0 for 175$ what do you guys think, it’s in pretty good condition, is anybody familiar with that bike and have any suggestions?
The comments have been EXCELLENT so far, thanks everyone for contributing their ideas!
Video Summary with some personal notes!
1.) Tyres: Affordable if you consider the extent of time used.
2.) Wheels: Costly but save weight!
3.) Dropper Post: “Simple but amazing”
4.) Handlebars and stem: Short stem and big bars increase control. I disagree with carbon absorbing vibrations; carbon’s higher stiffness than alloy bars makes it worse at vibration dampening. Sure it’s lighter, but your hands will take a beating.
5.) Contact Points: Grips, pedals, saddle. Change them to feel comfortable.
I have that one cannondale lefty carbon that has the fox terralogic intertia valve. WHAT A MOUTHFUL
Basically it can tell pumping ehile pedaling vs the ground bumps, is there any shock like this that does it in the back also??
You are the ride buddy we need, not the ride buddy with deserved.
This BUYBUYBUY attitude is really the worst in modern MTBing.
I have a motorcycle helmet and a full suit, could/should I use that?
I’d say bars stem, grips and saddle arnt even an upgrade. They are an absolute necessity. The problem is finding the correct saddle you end up buying many before you find the correct one. Charge spoon all the way for me. There great. Loving the vids.
Should I upgrade to a dropper post first or upgrade my seat first? I don’t have enough money to get both immediately.
Your parachord will do the same thing as your tourniquet, plus a 1000 other useful things, but at only a 10th of the weight and space
Where the hell are you riding? Nam? You’re prepared for a warzone lol.
FYI! I bought the Bell super 2r helmet recently and it was the most uncomfortable thing I have worn in my life, there is virtually no padding for the sides of you head due to the removable chin bar, I had to take it back
Only your tires it the ground? my handlebars hit the ground quite a bit.
Building your own bike is better than buying a new bike then upgrade it right away, much cheaper.
The presenter thinks that everybody who rides a bike is always in a mountain jumping from one rock to another!! This is far from the reality!! So with the exception of a few suggestions all the rest of the upgrades are a load of cr…!
Here’s what I did. I bought a well used Giant Yukon at a very low price.. Old school but working fine, So that got me into trail riding again. I loved it. and soon realized that this bike was lacking, when it came to trail rides, things like, seat, worn forks suntour crap, and single wall wheels, and junk tires etc.. So I cost out a new bike They are about 2000 3000 for good ones, and I also cost upgrading with new parts which was like almost as much for good parts. Very expensive both ways. for recreational riding. ( not the best stuff, but not crap )
So I kept my Giant going, still fun to get out and ride the safe trails, but I had my eyes out for an excellant top quality used bike selling cheap, and after a couple of months something did pop up, A Brodie, I ran out and checked it right away and bought it, So now I’m left with old Giant that I will use as a backup and winter bike. And ride the trails on my full comp. trail bike. btw the differance of riding the good long dual travel with air and adjustable suspension is night and day! Not only comfort but also Control and confidence.I was working way to hard with old cheapo, And crashing, One thing I like about the Giant hardtail is its much lighter.and feels more zippy. A better gravel bike.
Maybe if I could just buy a nice super light latest greatest full carbon. 15000 $ ah no. My cheap bikes got it covered. Total cost $500. If I was really more into it, my thinking might change. But for me A great bike did not make me a better rider. Just safer in the hard stuff.
I didn’t even get a chance to upgrade my bike before it got stolen
Why do the English leave letters out of words when they are speaking?
Tyres, floating disc rotors and replace the rotator cuff killing handlebars that have become the norm at stock.
Can confirm the part about the saddle. Two months ago I did a weekend tour with a new saddle and had a date on Sunday evening. My performance and responsiveness were greatly impaired that evening. Bought another new saddle on Monday morning.
All touch points (grips, saddle, pedals), and a longer dropper cuz I’m tall. And tires if the ones the bike come with are no good.
First mod I did on my bike was chop the bars down from 680mm to 650mm because they gave me shoulder and back pain. My previous bike had 620mm bars and was perfectly comfortable. I must be one of the very few who doesn’t like wide bars.
i need to repace my wheels anyway because i destroyed my back wheel
If it’s cheap & light, it won’t be strong, if it’s cheap & strong, it won’t be light, and if it’s strong & light, it won’t be cheap!
right away: saddle from my old bike
few weeks: tires that worked in mud
nine months: upgraded damaged rear brake for a better one
1 year: matching better brake on the front + dropper post
3,5 years: looking at wheels and rear hubs for a few months now…
Just got a new bike, and the moment i sat down to give it a test ride i knew that the saddle has to go. So when I have a bit of spare money again, that’ll be the first thing to change.
legit question here.. is putting on a gel patted seat cover on the saddle a no no in this awesome MTB world?
tires are the only thing that touch the ground, not when i go over them bars
you should have talked about the massive importance that is a proper set of shoes for flats. personally i really like shimanoe’s gr7 line. the michelin soles are not only excellent for bikes but also hiking rocky terrain. that and they last several thousand miles. probably even longer if you use short pins. i switched over to 10mm crankbros on my vp vice and whilst the grip is phenomenal its definitely eating into the soles far quicker. that could be a video in of itself, testing out the durability of shoes and performance ratios of the differing pin sizes/configurations.
awwwww wheels love 26wheels but wanna get my 27 inch frame 27inch wheels
I paid £350 for my whole bike, I was thinking more along the lines of mudguards and chain guides haha
Better start with secondhand hardtail, start use it in parks, light mountains trail and then with this exp upgrade\buy new\better bike.
16 years ago I got laughed at running a 70mm stem and 720 bars my how things change
Unluckily This week i recieved new Hellmet Bell Super2r and helmet has cracked chin guard in the middle. For me this is something inexcusable. The quality of plastic is like china shit…Im very dissapointed.:/ And the inside padding has not glued flitted properly.
#GMBN, I’d love to see a video on how to pack for a ride with kids. Different sized tubes, potentially more first aid supplies, snacks, etc
What was the ratchet set where did you get it and how much was it
You should put links to the products you use in the description, so we can purchase them if we want to
Shock pump, multi tool, water, tape, zip ties, tube, thin rain jacket.
Do a video on how to bring only the essentials on a short ride with just saddle bags and stashing your things on your bike
Backpack with back protector save my spine twice on easy, but rocky flow trails.
I’m not the only one who carries little hands. Trump complex?
For goodness sake don’t start carrying tournequets without appropriate training! If you must, then know these two things;
1. Once you put one on, do not take it off. That’s for the paramedic/EMT.
2. When you put one on, you are killing everything below the point of application.
First aid kit or emergency bandage should be with you allways, I’d rather carry the bike than bleed out in woods.
best way to wash your kit goggles and full face helmet and others video
Too much stuff and backpacks suck when wanting to shred hard. Specialized SWAT bib and call it a day.
These upgrades sound like one should just get a better bike lol
Ey folks, please don’t leave your first aid kit in your car!:)
Can you do a video of stashing your items in your mtb without bags
I one time forgot a most valuable piece of equipment……. my bicycle!!!! Got to the trail head, put on my gear, stretched out, opened my truck, nothing there! It was leaning up against a tree in my front yard.☹️
Just bought my first bike, trek fuel ex7. Love it but hear good and bad things about it. Any thought from experienced riders?? Thanks!
Holy smokes.. were you a boy scout in another life. Be prepared.. I somehow feel under prepared now.. time to go shopping.# gonna need a bigger bag.. thanks for always great content. Your video of Gooseberry was the first MTB vid I ever watched. Got me riding and now posting.. thanks for the inspiration ♀️
you can find here a lot of good stuff for sport and not only https://www.sportpursuit.com/join/Frazed
this is a message to Blake, please get your channel up and running again the most recent video was a year! I love all the vids please start it up again
Neil ‘ I always have a can of lube in the car ‘… Neil was last seen in a carpark, at night, close to a notorious dogging hotspot.
What Iv’e found is that, yes bum bags and back packs have a lot of pockets zips etc, you are very limited in what you can actually put in them. Unless it is the thickness of a sheet of paper you can’t actually close up outer zips because there is no stretch in the fabric to preserver it’s waterproof integrity or designer appeal lines.
I’m sure I’m not the first to say this but please for your own sake or any casualty you happen to be treating, DO NOT TOURNIQUET below elbow or knee. Not remotely as effective as above the joint and will mostly likely cause more damage to the casualty.
Hi i have a specialized sirrus x 5.0 what upgrade suggestions would you recommend? Thanks in advance
Always in my back pack: first aid kit, multi tool incl. tyre levers; a good headlight; cable ties, puncture repair kit (a small pump is on my bike all the time); gear hanger, missing link; some power bar or corn sugar; electrical tape; windcheater. (Adding wallet, phone, knee and elbow protection, helmet, gloves and a shirt before every ride.)
#GMBN would never tape stuff to my bike! It too beautiful to bodge stuff to it.
I always carry a Topeak saddle pack on my bikes.
Every bike has one permanently fitted containing a spare tube relevant for the wheel size of the bike, tubeless tyre plugs, a spare valve core, a KMC power link, tyre levers, a multi tool and latex gloves.
It’s a good habit to be in as I never have to remember to carry anything as it’s always on the bike. My pump is fixed to the bottle cage mounts along with the bottle cage.
Depending on the length of the ride I either take water bottles or a Camelbak with food/gels.
two tubes, pump, full size chain breaker, two quick link pairs, sometimes an allen key set, tire levers, SNACKS. im pretty minimalistic. ive even gone out with nothing before. worst case scenario at my local trails i get a few mile hike. everything around kinda loops back. plus if i flat and cant fix it and have to call off work i can fix it at the car and keep riding!
My first upgrade is not actually doing mountain biking because its so fucking expensive nowadays.
Back pack the integrated protection is the reason why I always use it.
…and most important: It offers plenty of space for cabel ties! Never go without them!
the leatherman squirt has saved my friends bike when a spoke broke on Mr toads…. thanks to you and the recommendation.
Im 6’7″ on an XL frame but my seat is higher thsn the bars, how can I get the bars higher loo
Sweet now I can look like a teenage mutant ninja turtle while shredding the trails
*Cable Ties*… otherwise Doddy will complain…
Greetings from the Galilee.
Spesh got it right with their SWAT down tube on the new Stumpy.
i dont even drive to th trails because its like 15 minutes from my home so…i have to take a lot of stuff with me
Brian. Try Kate’s Real Food bars. They taste great and don’t have any crazy ingredients. You could also make your own rice cakes. There are some awesome recipes for cyclists
Well produced and performed video, nicely done. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you so much for this video it really help me move closer and closer to what I want to do
Is there a way I can attach a hydration bladder to my frame? No space for a bottle, and don’t want it collecting all the dirt from my front wheel. #askGMBN
I actually carry my first aid kit with me all the time… There are some smaller one’s, which still contian all the necessary essentials, and who are pretty handy in case of an injury…
No tubeless repair kit?
Was kind of wondering where people leave this, since there might be sharp tools involved?
Love the filming in this video and the quality looks silky smooth, great job as always!
