Hello, I'm pianist from Poland and I'm making research for my bachelor's degree work about developing muscle memory and mechanical aspect of playing the piano, how to be more efficient with it, what to avoid to get sure with our skill etc.
But brief look through some scientific literature makes me wonder if musicians understand what they mean by saying "muscle memory", so I write this post to get sure I'm right and that I'll not write wrong information in my work. So muscle memory is rather colloquial term for observation, that muscles can regenerate faster, if in the past they were working in a particular way (most obvious example is getting back to form after leaving gym for a while), right? But what's musicians are referring to is rather developing neuron system that makes many precise actions happen automatically and it's called motor learning? Am I right?
Also, do you maybe know other useful therms that I need to search before getting sure I know what I'm talking about in that topic? Or can you recommend any scientific articles (or popular-scientific with strong scientific bibliography
I believe that dialogue between musicians and physiotherapists can be very important and lead to increasing efficiency during practice sessions and (what's outside of my work's topic) avoiding contusions and health problems of mechanical nature. Thank you
