Considering how excited you got me over some hiking boots I don’t doubt you’re an awesome motivational speaker!!
I use the regular hiking moab 2 mid for construction. Nine days in the rubber toe cap busted. Company would not replace or fix them. That it the weakest spot on the boot. The first gen moab mid lasted me longer, with the synthetic leather toe cap. Looking for new work boots. Love the merrell fit, but that rubber toe cap needs to be gone.
Killer in-depth review! I’m new to Merrells, but I have wide feet and these really look like the best option for me for several reasons.
What is in your opinion a good midsize hiking shoe? Thanx.
I was going to ask if they came in wide, but you answered that. I’ll have to look into trying this brand out, and whether it comes in a mid/hi top. I still have my Patagonia boots I bought in 2008 with the vibram outsole-10 yr warranty which is now up. I only use those for 20+ mile hikes, so still in great shape! Now in Billings Montana, tomorrow trying to hit either Grand Teton or Yellowstone. Hiked up to Avalanche lake yesterday in Glacier NP, was amazing! 4 mile round trip 500′ gain, with an awesome payoff! Unfortunately the Sun road was closed just after the trailhead due to an avalanche, so couldn’t drive through the rest. That’s ok though-Avalanche lake was well worth it!
I literally bought this exact model/color today. I had originally gotten the alverstone and returned them because the heel and arch were too hard. I also find the heel in these to be a bit hard, but overall is a much more comfortable shoe.
Can you tell me if they break in after awhile? Did you notice the harder heel? and would you recommend a work style insole instead of the stock?
These are such great shoes! I work in pediatric surgery & these are the shoes I wear in the operating room. I am on my feet for long hours & they are awesome. I guess i need to try them out on the trail! I use the Keen Targhee III on trail though! Great video Tony!
I just got them here in India, had out of the box to trails directly they are fine. Gave me little feet discomfort though but I don’t have very good arc in my feet.
Just bought a low cut 2.0 pair 89$ CND at Costco. I work on the ramp at an airport in eastern Canada so these are for the summer. Hoping to get two seasons out of these. I keep 5 pairs of work boots in my locker for different weather conditions and these are going to fill the role of warmer weather boots. I’ll update after my first summer with them.
Gortex shoes take forever to dry out once wet. Your feet sweat while hiking so get wet anyway. Non GTX are more breathable. Gortex shoes are good for wearing around town etc. Nice review
Hi; thanks for the great review! If you have a minute I would like to ask your opinion. I am traveling to Tokyo in December of this year. Looking for a boot offering comfort for loads of walking, somewhat waterproof and with a appealing look for both urban and nature. Your opinion would be greatly valued.
Old vid, but I just ordered a pair, and want to know how heavy they are?
I bought a pair of waterproof Merrels last year from BPS and the soles came unglued in 3 months on both shoes. I’ll never buy Merrel again
I picked up a pair of these about a month ago. Been on 2 hikes so far both around 8-10 miles and I’m happy so far. Very comfortable and breath well
Thx I just bought a pair of Mother of all boots 2 because I know Merell is outstanding. I had a pair of sneakers/skateshoes and although I never had Merells running shoes but I know it’s world class. I usually use zero drop shoes as everyday shoes but I hope these can be my everyday shoes from late summer and on, so that I can always run whenever I want. So I will not hike in them per se but use them as just everyday commuter shoes that can take me for a run whenever.
Frankenstein Loves & gives much praise for this Merrell Boot
Bro, for a foot wear to you go for Merrell…but for sure, for head gear you go for columbia
I will add this……………Just bought and have used the Moab WP and it is the most comfortable mid high boot I have ever worn. I have hiked and backpacked a lot over the last 25 years. I have I owned and backpacked in many top brands and this is the first ever boot that is comfortable on downhills and absolutely no hot spots or blisters on multi day pack trips. its to my understanding that they dont last as long as your more heavy duty boots. however, for the price i will purchase them as needed.
Merrel is known for the one size fits all shoe! Love my Moab vent 2 mids.
Nice… Just curious how they do on a long hike in our rocky conditions here in Southern California… Great first look at them though. Thanks for sharing, take care Jason.
Can these work boots still good to hiking or will it kill you on hiking?
I am thinking about getting these boots. I wear a 14 wide. I am helping my buddy deliver for ups over the holiday season and live in Minnesota. There is about 1 inch of snow right now and not cold. I am thinking these boots would work great. I have the Columbia omni heats now and they are to tall and big. I also have the danner pronghorns which feel better but, also to hot. what are your thoughts?
Hi. Can this shoe (moab 2 vent) be good for everyday wear to walk on asphalt to work, for 25-30 minutes a day and back?
Would it be comfortable enough, and everything else?
Edit: Not to mention staying in them for hours per day.
I have tons of Merrell shoes and boots. Have the moab 2 waterproof. I had a pair of boots that had a defect…cracking. sent a mail to Merrell and they sent me a free pair of boots..
NOT KIDDING
For me the moab 2 vent. No toe is what ive being wearing for 10 year straight, they just work for my legs (bad injury) saw the same in the work boot today bought them but im worried that they wont keep my feet dry in my workplace has there are to many vents!
I wish they would make these exact boot/hiking shoe with no vents for real waterproof protection.
Tomorrow is my 1st day trying them out.
I’ve been a Salomon guy for 20+ years so they’re still my choice for everyday wear and trail usage. However, I use the MOAB Vent’s as my Jeeping shoe. They offer plenty of grip when scrambling boulders and scouting lines.
BTW, thanks for the Photon review. After picking out my gear for my upcoming TMB hike I realized my Ohm 2.0 was just overkill for what I was carrying. My wife also picked up a new Spark from Nomad Ventures which is the perfect size for her small frame. All of her stuff fit into it with room to spare so that helped seal the deal on the Photon.
I have the Low vents in Merrell. just got them. Will be getting the mids. I sized up to a size bigger than my regular shoe. I width wider.. Does regugal width stretch out some. with out going a wider size.? I
Are these good for climbing over rock (and granite in particular)? I’m climbing Half Dome in a few months. I’m trying to find a good all-day hiking boot. I don’t have a particularly wide foot (average, I suppose, for a size 12). Do these shoes really “fit” or do I need to go a half-size up?
Great review really! Presently I am wearing water shoes for light hiking coz there are creek crossings in the hike too. I do have problems in rocky terrains coz the water shoes not sturdy enough.
How do you think if I use these moab 2 vent for my next trail with creek crossings? Will they drain fairly for one day trail? Thank you.
These have been my go to hiking boot for a while now. I’ve burned through roughly 800 miles of the app trail in these so far. I’m a high top guy. I highly recommend them.
Hey friend. I do a lot of offtrail Backcountry and also some mountain climbing in Oregon. It rains all winter here, and on the mountains snow climbs are rough. Do you think the Moab gortex 2 would be better? Also do you think either would hold up? There’s lots of rough volcanic rock I traverse in the mountains too.
Thanks!
I tired on four pairs of merrels at cabelas in January. did not like the arch support-where it ended under the foot and the ball of foot support. Also they were not flexible at at all. I ended up trying on one pair of keen koven mid hikers (not work boots) and fell in love. When I first tried them on it have me spring in my step that the merrel did not.
I where my keen koven for 10 hour days on an active robotics floor. And Ima be honest my feet are sore at the end of the day but not like where little runners.
I just found a pair online for $52 (not here yet) but if they fit and perform like their Moab Ventilator, I’ll be a happy camper. It’s been my main backpacking shoe for close to 10 years. I know this is silly, what type (brand) of pants are you wearing?

Welcome to the darkside… Love the Merrells. I have 4 different pairs of this shoe. Work, Play,Casual,Hiking
Great review! I am still using cheap trail runners but someday when I can expand my gear budget, Merrill’s are on the list!
Merrel boots you forget to mention they use cheap glue on the solo and they fall apart after few months and there customer service after 20 emails say ok we send you a new pair but you wait and wait and wait 18 months and still no replacement..
I just bought a pair of low ventilaters. I width wider than regular.. if I buy regular width and wear a liner sock with a Dran tough sock or smart wool. Both in liight cushion. Do you know if they would stretch out to help stop blisters.. I had blisters last year with a another shoe. Ended up going to a podiatrist affetr hiking. I also have an Oboz boot in regular and it doesn’t seem to stretch. I have hot spots with it. Even with 2 pairs of sock. Neat testing here.
Have you crossed creeks with these shoes? Just curious about their dranage ability.
Note: For water wadding I think drainage is very important. I myself don’t mind whether the shose still wet but all water drained out.

could you revire the addidas terrex skychaser mid gtx as well?
I have these shoes. I have used them for a while. Not a bad shoe, I put inserts in soles. Great review.
Great video brother… you helped me make the decision to get these. Subscribed.
Just bought a second pair a few day ago…
A wide front of the feet? I feel ya man! 😉
Sadly no true wide support and why do I keep seeing skeletons wearing these foot comforting apparels?
Goretex my friend, cost more but (for me have) clearly lasted longer than my standard water proof or ventilated Merrells.
I have all Merrells right now. Some mids for winter hiking, Merrell MQM Flex (a trail runner) which I just wear all the time. I have Merrell Earth shoes. Never really warmed to these. They do make kid’s shoes. You probably need a few more likes to get Merrell to send you some.:D Fun video. I can see why Harvey loves hiking-always an adventure with you two.
Wore these out over the winter, the soft toe. The mesh by the side of the toes gets mushy and let’s water in.
Really comfortable, not very durable.
Is there anything more like a tennis shoe but waterproof or resistant to rain and snow so kinda like a tennis shoe boot
Really nice overview, hiking shoes/boots/sandals are a really personal thing, finding the right fit can be a nightmare, I hope these work out for you.
I tried Merrill many years ago then I found La Sportiva. I don’t think I’ll ever switch!
