Is there any evidence for other MH illnesses like OCD and Bipolar?
It’s great that you talk about non-farmaceutical treatments. My doctors didn’t tell me anything about it. I follow recommendations in this video, i also found out, that omega-3 fatty acids, bone broth and eggs are VERY beneficial. Nutrition helped me more than medication. I talk about it extensively on my channel.
Talking about sports or books is not therapy…
What if the person was stuck in a rut, and to help them, they were engaged with, by talking about books?
But I know plenty of healthy eating people who have serious bouts with depression…?..
Totally agree about the connection! Cutting out gluten made me feel so much better mentally, much less brain fog. (This is coming from a highly skeptical person!) try it:-)
CORRECTION I omitted the fish recommendation on the MediMod Diet handout. I corrected it and if you are on my email list, I resent it it you already. If you downloaded it from my website I’ve uploaded the corrected version on Sept 26th and you can go and download it here: http://markspsychiatry.com/the-depression-diet/
Thanks a lot for your educating videos! Unfortunately I still didn’t find the clue to get control over my depression. I eat quite healthy, I supplement some things like Vit D, I move my body regularly (and sometimes do specific cardio), I do therapy since several years and analyze my problems, I confront myself with my fears and I train my ability to trust people. What I didn’t accomplish is finding a job with a supportig atmosphere, friends or even a partner. It’s exhausting… soon I am starting again with antidepressive medication…
I am new to the Med Diet and your salad prep looks great however I do not like making my own salad dressing. Any healthy suggestions on what to buy at the grocery store?
Food indeed cure not 30 percent but 100 percent, information is not complete, watch my video to know more
Hi Dr. Marks, I am a recent subscriber and want to thank you for taking the time to create your content. I have found it very informative. I especially like how you give examples to explain concepts that can be hard to understand.
I have battled depression since my early 20’s. I am now in my early 50’s. I am currently in a very low mood cycle and struggle with negative self talk. I know that exercise and eating right can help, my trouble is with motivation. I make lists in my mind and even keep a notebook of things I ‘should’ do to feel better. I am able to sustain a job because I can turn on a switch sort of speak, and mask my symptoms by pretending. But, the energy it takes to sustain this act exhausts me. I have no energy or desire to shop and prepare the right foods, or exercise. My interpersonal relationships suffer because I have no energy left to give. I just want to sleep, or I will research online all of the things that can help me recover, but never seem to follow through. I hope I am making sense? I am wondering if you can speak on the issue of motivation, or lack there of? Knowing what we should do, but finding it difficult to get there. Anything that can help. Thanks again.
Dr.tracey i have schizophrenia can you please tell that if i tolerate psychological abuse or torture what will haven in worst cases Please i will be very fortunate to knew the truth
Agreed about inflammation. I can go from being severely depressed to feeling good after taking ibuprofen. High EPA fish oil help also.
This look looks amazing on you Dr.., les clownish.,
Your professional look gives credibility and confidence to your information.
Could you do a video in depression and anemia after 50.menopause mental health etc.
Thank you
I know you take comments professional matter.
Depression is inevitable and prolonged if you are born on planet earth
My psychiatrist told me that organic food doesn’t help with mental health and that’s what I want to get on please tell what I need to do
PLEASE Answer me Dr.Marks,on my first 10 days of Ketogenic diet, I felt like different person, stable mood, no anxiety and clarity, I can focus and understand difficult tasks at work, I started to consider stopping my bi-polar meds. But suddenly my mood is back to normal(swings and anxiety) I am still following keto, taking B supplements and my Ketons level is 0.6, Please HELP..!!!
Just in case others are like me, I found diet and healthy lifestyle options to be wonderful!!! In fact, they helped so much that I didn’t even recognize my depression. In a way, they were a cover. I refused to recognize my traumatic childhood and how it was still affecting me or the toxic people from my childhood that were literally following me around the country as an adult. I continued to accept these things as normal and keep trying to “fix” myself with healthier choices. And the toxic people both celebrated this behavior because it confirmed that if anyone had a problem it was me and laughed at me for my obsession with perfect health and lifestyle. Now I am trying to find a balance. Eating healthy while realizing that it’s not the full issue here.
The diet that treats depression an an anti inflammatory diet, this means no grains, especially wheat and corn, in any form. It’s the inflammation and histamine reactions that are the problems. I’ve been rescearhing diet for the last four years because I got of anti depression and anxiety drugs after 15 years of being on them and never having them work and I needed to get better. Everyone is different, so some people can tolerate different foods than others, but it’s important to give your body breaks from whatever you are eating so you can be aware of any possible symptoms you may have. It can take about a month without some foods to start feeling better, so take your time and disipline yourself, it will be worth it
I’ve learned that studies are subjective & relative
from my perspective, the Mediterranean diet (when compared to Plant Based Diet, as recommended by Kaiser Permanente) doesn’t create the same degree of physical improvements as the PBD, and can actually be fatal to someone that is at a critical stage of CVD (cardio vascular disease). however, if adding Extra Virgin Olive Oil helps me eat healthy foods, where i would otherwise not eat them, it is recommened to eat it with EVOO rather than not
I got off gluten after reading “Wheat Belly” & have definitely noticed an improvement in my over all health & depression too. Gluten free foods are expensive though & many corn & oat products are loaded with glyphosate residue so choose organic when you can. Our regulatory agencies have been bought out by the corporations they SHOULD be watching more closely.
I am going to try this too. I been trying to shop only on the outside loop going around the grocery store and staying away from box and canned food.
Amazing how changing what you put in your body can make a big difference. Could try this too TOGETHER with pro biotics…you may feel like a brand new woman…❤
To me, this makes a lot of since. The Mediterranean diet is probably close to what humans ate at the beginning of our origins, since according to anthropologists, we originate from Africa. Africa interestingly enough boarders the Mediterranean sea. So even today, there are countries like Morocco and Egypt with cultures that basically eat this diet on a regular bases. When I think of the ideal healthy diet, I try to imagine what humans ate before all the added crap and processing they do to food today. I loved this informational video.
I was hoping it would have been carbs and ice cream to aid in depression. But yes, I definitely would say that mindful eating helps with depression. As does cutting out most processed foods. But damn, is bread so goooooooood.
Hey Doc, just got a hold of some Egyptian Chocolate, is that Mediterranean enough?
My mother understood about fish helping with clearer concentration. During finals week when I was in high school, mom would make a lot of baked fish. Dad would ask “Why are we having fish so much this week?” I would say “Dad…it’s finals week”
Many people today are trying to figure out the best way to lose weight. Then again, having the ability to find a diet plan that will work for you is hard to discover. A very important factor you need to understand is that a diet that works for one person might not work for another. And that means you have to understand what your getting into before you start one of those diets. Therefore we’ve decided to give you a fantastic look at the Xtreme Fat Loss Diet. This may give you enough info to learn whether this really is something which is suitable to your requirements. Read more here https://truehealthreport.com/xtreme-fat-loss-diet-review/
I have recently switched to a keto diet. Almost all my stomach related psychosomatic symptoms have gone away. When I told my PDoc about my diet changes she reduced my mood stabilizer by 50mg.
When you eat Mediterranean diet as you live in Spain, but still have depression:/
This doesn’t help those who suffer from certain IBS types and processed carbs cause less sick symptoms and are safer to eat. High grains, natural state foods, and beans are out of the question. What do you have to say for them?
I am Greek, i suffered from anxiety. I follow Greek/Med. diet rich in fatty fish, virgin olive oil and consume as many veggies, nuts and fruits i can eat with daily exercise. My symptoms vanished within 3 weeks and i start feeling even happier than i was before my anxiety period. Totally recommended! Taking complex B antistress multivitamins helped me too.
It’s still shock me just how a number of people have no idea about Custokebon Secrets (just search it on google) although lots of people lost a lot of weight using it. Thanks to my friend who told me about it. I’ve lost a lot of fat.
Thanks so much, Dr. Tracey. How to be on your email list? I have some questions sometimes but cannot email to ask you. could you please give me? If you have time, please answer. Thanks again.
I feel empty from my body… with my anxiety…..Pls Dr how can one know that he is recovering from anxiety
Hello there! Thank you for this helpful video. By the way, I notice a lot of people keep on talking about Custokebon Secrets (google search it), but I’m not sure if it’s good. Have you tried Custokebon Secrets? I have heard some extraordinary things about it and my work buddy lost a lot of weight with it, but she refuses to tell me:(
I was on Keto for a year and my ptsd, anxiety and everything was heightened. When I went back to eating carbs and sugar I felt better (mentally/emotionally). I self medicate with food. Can you explain this?
Could you make a review/commentary of Netflix’s Mindhunter series? Would be interesting to hear a real psychiatrists opinions!
Great video! I would just add that if you do eat whole grains, they should ALWAYS be NON-GMO, as GMO grains will cause further inflammation; and the ones that are sprayed with pesticides should also always be organic. Same goes for fruits and vegetables. You can find many lists online as to which grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides. Again, the ones that are need to always be organic (which means they are also NON-GMO), and the ones that are not sprayed still need to be at the very least NON-GMO, and organic whenever possible.
Thank you, but READ “No Grain No Pain” book by Dr Peter Osborne for valuable gut health information.
Hi, Dr. Marks. I am hoping you will talk about anxious depression and or PTSD. I am high functioning and do many positive things to recover, but never really feel relaxed and at peace, always on edge and a short fuse. I also struggle with suicidal thoughts. I would also be really interested in your take on how hormones affect mental health. Thank you!
I’ve been a vegetarian for 20 years (with moderate amounts of oily fish). This is my normal diet. However, I can’t say is truly reduces symptoms. Mine tend to be situational. However eating more sugar or appetite regulation changes are a signal for mood issues in my case. That’s not to say it’s not worth doing. Still think it’s the best thing I ever did.
There are other non gluten grains not mentioned in this video. When shopping for any of these grains, read and find where it was milled/processed and if it was in a gluten free environment.
Also there is a good website on these anti inflammatory diet.
Talking about sports and books might not be traditional therapy, but these activities help with socialization and ones with depression have tendencies to isolate. One could take your statement and feel vindicated when isolating oneself.

Thank you for this video Tracy. I’m posting this particular comment around a bit to find people who can relate. I definitely experience insomnia induced depression as a result of an unfortunately long list of foods from which I’m obviously highly intolerant (I’ve had Ige based intolerance tests to back this up). My theory is that the foods cause an inflammatory response, that in turn ‘send’ proteins/inflammatory cytokines over the blood brain barrier and wake me up at times in the night where I would not wake up naturally. I’m then awake for hours in the night, which in turn causes depression (now imagine the same process can take place without waking up into full consicousness, you wouldn’t even be aware that your body is trying to tell you something). I’d put money on this theory, it happens without fail whenever I eat a ‘bad’ food. I”m not sure it’s even possible to get extreme insomnia and not feel depressed is it? They go hand in hand it seems. Anything here in my theory that you agree with Tracy? Best Wishes, Aaron.
Eating well makes you feel better. People of the Mediterranean know how to eat. QED. Right now am on the carnivore diet, and feel fantastic.
I cleaned up my diet a while back and I definitely feel better mentally and physically. Once a month I’ll allow myself some junk food. I can feel the difference, too. I’ll feel lousy for a couple of days afterward from having a soda and potato chips.
I also added vitamin D3, magnesium, fish oil, and coq10. I was once on several meds for fibro and depression/anxiety. Like, for 25 years. For the last year I have only taken lyrica when nerve pain flares up, but its 1/4 the prescribed dose. I’ll take ibuprofen for Inflammation pain. At 64 I feel better than I have in decades simply by eating cleaner foods. Wow.
I find that my depression is much less when I am eating a ketogenic diet, which is an anti-inflammatory diet. When I fall off the keto diet and go back to eating grains and sugar, my mood plummets quickly, and I actually feel physically sick too. I don’t know why I keep falling off when I know the consequences for both my mental and physical health.
Does this way of eating have any effect on anxiety disorder and panic?
I feel this way: a healthy diet would improve my brain, but in a way that I have trained myself to avoid, because then I would have to mentally face my own mind and my society and I would rather numb my mind with these bad foods to subdue trauma. It’s self medication. It’s not “good” but it’s kept me alive. I ate a family size bag of M&M’s over two days and I feel great! But not like real great, great in the sense I can’t process what’s going on, which for me is great! Hahaha.
Thanks for your videos they always do a good job of giving me information and encouragement. Thanks.
ive been on a diet to lose some weight. side effect has been incredible mental energy and focus. i eat nearly no grains, but i do eat nearly all whole foods.
I am on the Mediterranean diet and I really love it. And it has improved my quality of life and my mood. It is tasty, filling, satisfying diet.
Is Custokebon Secrets useful to lost a ton of fat? We have read a lot of good things about this popular fat burn diet plan.
I love how so many parts of the body benefit from similar dietary recommendations. Maybe further studies will strengthen this recommendation for mental health or maybe not. But either way it’s good for cardiac health and maintaining a healthy weight. There’s no way that’s bad!
I have cut out dinner….um, half-fasting?..lost 50 pounds, bathroom problems, improved sleep…
Haven’t tried a full fast…
Not sure about the depression thing, though, but the other improvements make me happy…
Hoping to loose at least 15 more…
If one is depressed, can it last 5 minutes, possible drop in voice and rate of speech? While singing a favorite song, a sudden feeling of just not singing it? Tightening of the throat?
Does this sound like depression?
Anybody tested out the Custokebon Secrets (look on google search engine)? I’ve noticed numerous awesome things about this popular diet plan program.
Thank youuu for this video. I didn’t think of food at all. No wonder, though I’m on med, sometimes i would get sudden anxiety attack out of no where even if there were no threats, negative thoughts or constant thinking abt death.
Yes i knew that. That why i’m nuts about nuts or so. And about fish like trout
Also not that delicious but fecies Transplantation may help with mood and weight. Yes it’s gross but it may help because the gut and following parts are actually demanding for some nutrients (like fatty or sugary stuff or a certain type of fruits)
PS: Oh damn, messed up with cheese for longer than 5 days.. that’s probably why i have such serious problems the last days. But i also need kcal to keep me up cause of the adhd. Yeah it’s really crap right now and i expect an accountabily buddy to help me out, but i have to find one. Eww.
Has anyone tried Custokebon Secrets? (just google it) We’ve heard numerous awesome things about this popular fat burn methods.
Check out Moringa powder! Totally changes your mood as well as your health.
Thank you!
Yes the best I ever felt was when I meditated, are a whole food plant based diet and exercising at least 4 times a week.
The best! Way better then anti depressants and adhd meds. But, you just be consistent. It’s gotta be a lifestyle.
Most helpful, thank you! I’ve suffered from PMDD for about 3 decades now.
I really appreciate this information. It is to the point yet explains a few food related things about the brain that are not so well known. I think it’s the first place to start when any health problems arise. Whole foods, real food. It’s literally the way I have eaten 90% of the time. When I was very young I remember thinking Jello wasn’t really food with all its fake flavours and food colouring. Yet, the monster that is depression and anxiety still haunts me. I can only assume I’d be much worse off if my diet was poor.
Its still surprise me, just how many people don’t know about Custokebon Secrets, although lots of people get great results because of it. Thanks to my cooworker who told me about Custokebon Secrets, I have lost a ton of weight with it without starving myself.
Hey Tracy! great work I need your calendar but I can’t find links and I want it shipped to India
I watched this video when it was released and began to follow Dr Marks’ diet advice for depression. I also followed her advice for PMDD supplements(another video). I have had incredible positive results. I am following 100%, and will continue. Thank you so so so much for this information. I am much more balanced and depressive days are manageable and less intense. ❤️
Has anyone used the Custokebon Secrets to lost tons of fat? Just simply do a google search. On there you will discover that a great guidelines about how exactly you can lost a ton of weight. Why not give it a chance? maybe it is going to work for you too.
Good video to plan ahead, less chance of going off plan if everything is already prepped. Thanks
I was able to mask my depression with diet and exercise and sometimes drugs. Until recently!! 26 years old and my depression was getting the best of me. Had a huge low and Im now put on an ssri and benzo. Best thing i ever done in my life!!!
Hi Dr. Marks! Can you do an episode on BPD and anger and how to manage it? Also, how can one manage emotional numbness with BPD?
Hey doc can you please talk about the genetic test and let us know about it in your video and if it worked in your practice
so confused by these tests.. why only 2? why not have the 2 as you stated, but then 2 more with the combination of diet AND psychotherapy/ whatever therapy, AND a test with the social environment in combination with diet? it would show more nuances and save time, no? I know it would increase the cost to run the research, but I feel like those tests were flawed. what was the control? the existence of depression itself? ok.. but he variables of just social interaction is weak, why not have chosen therapy practices instead? there seem to be too many variables with just hanging out.. at least therapy has a supposed directive..?
All mental health problems are caused by severe calcium deficiency. This begins in the womb or in infancy. The human body can assimilate calcium only from fresh, natural, uncooked foods especially leafy greens and grasses, wheatgrass. Artificial supplements do not work. The best way to get the calcium from greens is through green smoothies.
Brain chemical imbalances have never been proved.
One of the reasons why mental health problems generally develop or manifest in late adolescence is because of the body’s need for tremendous amounts of calcium due to the sudden spurt in physical growth.
Calcium is needed for proper neurotransmitter function.
It is also important to minimise chronic cellular inflammation by avoiding white sugar, refined carbs and oils and fats that increase cellular inflammation.
Cellular inflammation prevents the absorption of nutrients vitamins and minerals.
Dr. Tracy Marks you are inspirational to good health. I just currently started working on my gut health by consuming lots of kefir and organic yogurt, its only been a week and i feel its helping my high blood pressure, alrhough i seem to have chronic fatigue with no motivation, do you think you could do a video on what to do to help overcome fatigue please?
Sugar is an ingredient added to processed foods. Its responsible for heart disease, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and possibly cancer. Cancer tumors use sugar as food. My cholesterol and triglycerides were sky high until I eliminated sugar from my diet. Now all my numbers dropped into the normal range and the doctor even took me off high blood pressure meds. Also many fats are heart healthy. Things like coconut oil and grass fed butter are healthy.
30 percent improvement…3 empty chambers in a Russian roulette game where you pull the trigger 10 times.
They laughed when I told them I was planning to lose fat with just using Custokebon Secrets, but after I showed them extraordinary results right after I used it they are begging me to tell them about it. Of course I won’t tell them the detail about this diet plan, haha
That you so much for the information Dr. Tracy, I’ll share this with my VA Dr and other veterans…
Cheers
What kind of diet would you recommend for someone with depression and psychosis. The diets for each seem almost polar opposite so I’m unsure what diet is best to help with my depressive psychosis Thanku x
Thanks Dr Marks! I will try this. . I tried the sleep deprivation and light therapy that you shared about once and it really helped.
Hi Dr. Marks. Thank you for another great video! Could you make a video about nutrion for people with ADHD. Thanks a lot!
Dr.Marks a friendly reminder of a great topic. How to convince someone you care about to seek professional mental health help when they refuse to consider the possibility that he or she is mentally ill.
I tried, but everytime I mention it she cusses and insults me and doesn’t answer my calls for weeks. When she does finally contact me is because somehow she ended up 3000 miles away and needs money.
